“This enables a high water table and therefore the carbon sink function at Kopuatai to be maintained year-round, even in dry periods.”

The latest recipient of the Roger Harris—Waihou Valley Scheme Scholarship, Keara Coster, was taught at school about the flash flood that tore through Te Aroha in 1985, sparking a state of emergency for six days.

The Water Sciences Prize was established in 1990 by Sir Ross Jansen with the University of Waikato Earth Sciences Department. The water sciences prize of book vouchers worth $500 is awarded annually to the top student enrolled in level three water science papers within the School of Science.

“I chose to study civil engineering for this reason and am interested in seeing to what extent flooding issues can be solved in a way that is beneficial to the community and the environment,” she says. “I decided to choose this path because I enjoy problem-solving, and I want to apply it to an area where I can make a difference. I do remember going on a school trip in year 9, where I learnt about the great flood and the landslide down Mt Te TheAroha.”Roger Harris—Waihou Valley Scheme Scholarship financially helps civil engineering or resource management students who reside in the Waihou Piako area and have an interest in river and catchment management. The scholarship is dedicated to the chief engineer, Roger Harris, of the Hauraki Catchment Board from 1959 to 1983, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Waihou Valley Scheme. The scholarship pays up to $6,000 towards university course fees and has been awarded by Waikato Regional Council each year since 1994.

“Kopuatai has been shown to be a globally unusual peatland ecosystem due to the abundance of the peat-forming plant Empodisma robustum, which is able to conserve water exceptionally well by minimising evaporation rates,” saysSheLeeza.worked as a policy intern at the Ministry for Primary Industries to help analyse New Zealand greenhouse gases inventory data.

Keara Coste is the most recipient of the Roger Harris — Waihou Valley Scheme Scholarship Leeza Speranskaya is interested in climate change, remediation and restoration

Waikato Regional Council has also recognised the University of Waikato’s top water sciences student, Leeza Speranskaya, who has a particular interest in climate change, remediation andLeeza,restoration.aRussian-born environmental sciences master’s student from Wellington, is researching the hydrology and carbon balances of the internationally recognised Kopuatai peat bog. The 21-year-old says her year-long research project will be useful for predicting the effects of climate change on peatland carbon sinks and for informing the restoration of drained peatlands.

The 19-year-old University of Waikato Bachelor of Engineering student has lived in the Waihou Valley area her whole life, including Te Aroha. Keara says that while she has never experienced such devastation in her lifetime due to the flood protection measures put in place, she has seen the Waihou River overflow into the surrounding flood plains many times, cleverly controlled by the flood schemes.

South Waikato Young Farmer Chloe Belfield and Mackenzie Young Farmer Nicola Blowey have also officially taken their seats as board members after being elected at the NZYF AGM in July. They were two of four NZYF members vying for the two positions, elected annually on a three-year term. Jessie, who was a board member for two years prior to the chair, said she was also excited to work with Chloe and Nicola, who have hit the ground running.

“I was super impressed with their ability to get into the board meeting and have a good grasp on the discussions. They both have different skill sets and are each bringing something different and diverse to the board table, which will benefit us hugely.

Chloe has been a member since the tender age of 17 and works for Fonterra as a Business Improvement Lead, and has also started her own business, Jones Agri“YoungFencing.Farmers has provided me with a lot at a young age and within an organisation that equally shares my passion for our rural communities and sector,” she said. She has held a number of roles at club, district and regional levels, most recently as the Otago Southland chairwoman, which she said have all helped to build her confidence, leadership, and governance capabilities.

Inglewood Young Farmer Jessie Waite has been elected as the New Zealand Young Farmers chair to replace Kent Weir, who ended his 12-month term in the position.

“We have seen them grow from members to national committee representatives and now board members, and I know they will flourish in those roles.”

Nicola is a former dairy farmer currently working as a Dairy New Zealand Extension Officer. Originally from the United Kingdom, she landed in Aotearoa in 2016 and brings membership experience from other Young Farmer organisations across the globe, including the UK, Canada and“MyEurope.experience is in on-farm, grassroots members, and my focus is on delivering for the membership to ensure the long-term success of our organisation,” she said. She has held executive positions at club and regional level and also sat on the national committee as the Aorangi delegate.

“The farm was pretty rough initially, and dad noticed the Ayrshire came out of the winter in the best condition. They are hardy and will forage and look for feed, not stand at the gate and moan. “Dad acquired his first pedigree in 1961. I now milk 190 cows as I have cut numbers back a bit. I keep the young stock home as replacements to ensure we don’t bring in any diseases and things back to our farm as has happened in the past.

“Dad’s passion for breeding and his interest in showing is what kept me the most interested in farming. He was a life member of New Zealand, Waikato and Thames Valley Ayrshire clubs, and he was a very good motivator and mentor. He taught young people in a way that they learned quickly. “I started judging at a very early age, and I love the challenge to breed the next best cow or bull. All of our children enjoy showing calves, and Jonty showed a cow

Zane Kite, the president of the Waikato Ayrshire Club, and owner of Kiteroa Ayrshires has been involved in the breed of cattle since he was born, thanks to his dad Wally.

The Ayrshire is a Scottish breed of dairy cattle that is named for the county of Ayrshire in South West“MyScotland.dadsadly passed last November, and I do miss him. He had a huge amount of knowledge, and taught me a lot about farming and the cattle. We worked together on the land and enjoyed breeding, showing and judging cattle.

“The original piece of the farm has been in our family for more than 100 years. My dad started with Ayrshire cattle after having crossbred and any other cow his dad could buy.

“My wife Marie and I have four children, and they are the fifth generation to be on our family farm,” says Zane.

“They are the only cattle I have known on the farm since I was born 52 years ago, and we are 100 per cent pedigree and pure now. They are definitely a minor breed, but those who have them love them.”

“With the amount of disease around these days, it is easier to be a closed shop. I don’t have staff, Marie helps out with calves and other jobs, and the children help out as well.

“The commercial side of farming doesn’t interest me — I don’t want to milk 1,000 cows. I like focussing on breeding, judging and classifying. This year is our 52nd annual sale, it is the longest-running Ayrshire sale in New Zealand, and I am proud of that.

“Our annual calf and yearling sale is very popular, and is the longestrunning annual Ayrshire annual sale in New Zealand.

“I believe milk production is all about the feed more than the breed, and you can’t compare apples with apples now. Guys up north have poor and hard land but can average 300kgMS.

HIGH COUNTRY JOURNEYS

The younger farmers who buy calves or bulls off me are finding they love them for milking, and we wouldn’t be still selling 52 years on if they were not good.”

Zane appreciates that Ayrshire are foragers that look for food and convert their feed well for milk production

“I encourage everyone to try Ayrshires.

Ayrshire originate from Ayrshire in Scotland and have become a well-rounded breed with a gentle nature

“They are great calvers and have longevity, outliving many other breeds, and they have good-sized calves, but it is important what bull you use. More than 20 per cent of our cows are more than 10 years old, and they are between Holsteins, Friesians and Jerseys for milk production, with ours averaging 500kgMS a cow.

“They had a reputation for having bad tempers many years ago, but that has been bred out of them, and they have great natures now. They are very pretty and come in a mix of colours. They can be browns, reds, blacks and whites and people really fall in love with them.

“Igot my first donkey three months after we first got married,” says Marion. “Peter came to New Zealand from Holland with his family by boat in 1958, and I came with my family, also from Holland, 10 years later, and we met through the Dutch Society at an annual ball.

“Peter’s family began a poultry farm in Pukekohe, which they had for 40 years. They were known for their hard work and won Best Farm in New Zealand many times.

At Clovercrest Miniature Donkey Stud, Peter and Marion van Dijk delight in their tiny animals that they became involved in nearly 50 years ago.involved years

“I always loved animals, but our family never had land, although I had a horse at Pony Club. Suddenly, I met Peter and was able to buy a donkey and a horse, and our interest grew from there. “Pinocchio was our jack, and then we looked for a jenny and found her in Invercargill. Then the two had babies every 18 months, and we would sell them.

“Our first donkeys were English, and they are the most sweet animals. Then a friend, Maisie Hurst, imported the first three American Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys into New Zealand. I thought they were beautiful and we could do that too. “It was very expensive, but we have never regretted it. What we enjoy the most about breeding AMMDs is that every year we get to witness the great miracle of birth and then enjoy the delightful bundles of joy for the next six months.

“We are really proud of the foals we breed, and they keep us busy in our retirement. We show off the special babies born and share other information on our Clovercrest Miniature Donkey Stud website.

Abundant Health

Pain is a great motivator, and people turn to joint supplements for relief — but do they help? There has been signi cant research into compounds found in joint supplements, especially glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. It comes as no surprise that studies come to differing conclusions ranging from poor to excellent results. While studies and research can be helpful, my criteria for assessing osteoarthritis supplements is simple. I evaluate the effectiveness of my supplements (and others) by whether they help. An important part of my discipline of nutritional medicine is regularly reviewing progress. When someone commences my joint supplements, I contact them after six weeks, then again at three months to see how they are doing. The measure of assessment is again simple; is it working? When someone purchases my joint products, I offer a joint health assessment, which the majority adopts. I ask questions about the problem, including its diagnosis and treatment, plus symptoms and a description of limitations in mobility. Ventilation and extraction tech — Installing bathroom and kitchen extractors and home ventilation units, heat transfer tubing and other ducted vents can be a real game of Twister when the roof is on tight. Small crawlspaces make it a stuffy and difficult job for installation techs. However, with a few roof panels off, it’s easy to run ducts and place fan units. Chimney clean sweep — Upgrading a fireplace often means putting in a new chimney stack, which must pass through the roof. Usually, your plumber and roofer are the same person, so getting both of these jobs done in one can be a bonus for both of you. An honourable mention goes to another rooftop plumbing-related fix, which is easier with scaffolds raised — your long-serving spouting and guttering. Add sunlight with skylights — The clever money these days is on using the sun instead of electricity, and the simplest way to do this is to let the sun into darker spaces in the home via tubular skylights. These have come a long way since the turn of the century and can brighten up dingy corners by harvesting the light without adding heat in the summertime.

Those who scale the scaffolds and repair holey house-tops say that patience is the keyword for 2022, as they have a lot to do when the sun shines. Getting on the books now means you can make plans to do it all in one swoop, however, and there’s a possibility that a well-planned roofing quest can save you money. Here are the top five things to do when the covers come off up top. Insulation top up — When there’s no crawlspace to navigate, and the roof is peeled aside, it’s a good time to make short and easy work of insulation top-ups. Some materials sag, degrade and crumble over time, and it’s easy to spot areas where coverage isn’t one hundred per cent when there’s plenty of room and light.

Roof off, scaffolds up — why not tackle several tasks at once, while access is easy?

Shade sail cover — Remember that last sunburn, when you dozed off on the deck reading the latest James Patterson opus? You said ‘never again’ — so let’s hoist the sails for summer. Easier to install than a fixed pergola, able to be taken down to clean and stowed during storm season, and provides a nesting spot up high so the cat can fulfil his dreams of being lord of all he surveys. Fish pond water feature — It’s meditative and relaxing, and if reports of exotic foreign day spas are correct, the fish will nibble at your toes in a pleasing manner. As an added bonus, should society collapse due to another round of petrol price hikes, you don’t have far to go with a rod and reel. Swimming pool — With climate change making every year hotter, eventually, we will need a pool, so why not beat the rush? Modern robot vacuums and filters make it easier than ever to avoid the pool becoming a green pit of primordial ooze, from which new life may one day arise. It’s possible to stretch the truth to insist that swimming, the ultimate low-impact sport, may even help turn a dad bod into the image of a heroic lifeguard. Sometimes, excuses are just what you need to persuade that significant other who pays half the bills to give up on their ideas for a holiday in Bali or a new jet ski and really get behind some backyard projects. Here are the top arguments to deploy to get things rolling. Spa pool — Did you know that a soak in a good hot spa can relax muscle tension, relieve aches and pains, and even reduce blood pressure and the chance of a heart attack? Basically, not buying a spa pool is a recipe for complete physical collapse. Gently simmering your cares away also promotes better sleep, and that means lessVegetablesnoring.

garden — Have you seen the price of broccoli and tomatoes? Yes, there will be digging and planting, weeding and slug removal, but think of the savings. As well as the delicious taste, home-grown veggies beat factory-farmed imported produce hands down and even contain more vitamins and other goodies. Barbecue area — Honestly, think of all the cooking you won’t have to do! With the grillmaster chief in charge, you’ll enjoy summertime meals without lifting a finger. Modern barbies can do all those slowcooked dishes you’ve seen on TV chef programmes. Don’t ask about the dishes; do ask about the optional rotisserie that can accommodate a whole pig. For a bonus argument, go out for pulled pork or brisket and casually mention that you can cook this with the right kettle and offsetWood-firedsmoker.

“The new 9500 is one of three models offering increased power and throughput in 2023, delivered through John Deere’s new JD18X engine, which reduces revolutions per minute while decreasing fuel and oil usage to drive further efficiency gains during operation.”

That slow and low RPM figure is the key to better fuel economy, but there’s another trick up the sleeve of this consummate harvesting machine. To further optimise engine performance and synchronise it with throughput of crops, John Deere’s developers have added what they call HarvestMorion Plus to the new 9000 series line-up, which includes the 9500 and the even bigger 9600 and 9700“HarvestMotionunits.

Plus delivers an additional 18, 27 and 48kW of power across the 9700, 9600 and 9500, respectively,” says Ms Gersekowski. “This provides farmers and contractors with 10% more productivity and 10% less fuel usage per tonne harvested.” The system works by precisely synchronising the engine speed with crop flow and power output needs to ensure consistent crop throughput at lower RPMs. That means less fuel used for a more efficient result, just what farmers need at a time of high fuel costs. by Andy Bryenton

The company is calling the new 9500 SPFH forage harvester a fitting milestone celebrating John Deere’s half-century commitment to supporting the nation’s agriculture“Farmerssector.and contractors demand durable high-capacity forage harvesters that consistently deliver maximum throughput to make the most of peak harvest windows,” said John Deere Australia and New Zealand production system manager Stephanie Gersekowski.

Added to this is a new spout design, which John Deere says will become standard across the entire 9000 series for the new model year. With a longer, optimised contour, the new spout offers more visibility and easier maintenance, making it easier to service. Maize as a feed for cattle has become a pillar of the rural sector, delivering reliable feed with a superior energy content when it’s needed. Advancements in maize genetics through careful, scientific breeding have developed cultivars which grow vigorously in Kiwi conditions, producing feed with a consistently highenergy content. Research also suggests that maize or wheat grain can deliver more valuable milk solids proteins a litre. The amazing thing about all of this is not that maize can deliver the goods as an agricultural feed or even that modern agricultural scientists can make leaps of progress through understanding the genetics of maize. What’s most astounding is that the majority of the work required to turn the ancient, hard-kernelled wild grass called teosinte into maize was done long ago, before European peoples even invented the plough. One of the clues, which trace this 9,000year history of selective planting and crossbreeding of strains, comes from a corn cob thrown away in a cave in Tehuacan, Mexico, at about the time the pyramids were being built.

as strange a

A statue of Xilonen, Aztec maize goddess — maize was developed over 9,000 years from wild grass in what is now Mexico, leading to both sweetcorn and the vital cattle feed of the modern era event still commemorated in the United States during Thanksgiving. Those pilgrim settlers owed their survival to the strain of maize cultivated by the Wampanoag nation. Still, it was one of hundreds of cultivars across North America, all stemming from moderndayTheMexico.changes made to maize to make it fit for agricultural feed purposes pale in comparison to the huge changes achieved during centuries by indigenous peoples to turn a marginally productive forage grass from the dry southwest into a staple foodstuff. Maize silage took off as a supplement in New Zealand from the 1990s onward, swiftly achieving harvests of more than 200,000 tonnes per annum. By 2010, maize covered more than 100,000 hectares each season, and that figure has only grown into the present day. As powerful harvesters cut a swathe through the maize fields this growing season, it’s interesting to reflect that, 9,000 years ago, this valuable resource began with a nomadic Central American tribesperson taking note of an unusually ripe-seeded sprig of grass.

“Based on archaeological evidence and modern DNA evidence, we already know that maize was domesticated in Mexico some time between about 10,000 and 6,000 years ago,” says Nathan Wales of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.“Whatwedid not know, using modern DNA or other information, is really how this process gets going and the timing of different events in the past.”

The little corn cob is only a couple of centimetres long and carries just eight rows of kernels. Someone harvested and ate this plant 5,300 years ago. However, even then, it was closer to modern maize, of the kind we have developed in recent times into both cattle feed and commercial sweetcorn, than it was to its wildByancestors.thispoint, more than 3,500 years of selective planting had already made the Tehuacan specimen develop unshelled, soft kernels and had increased the size and number on each cob. This process was to continue right up until the ‘discovery’ of maize by Europeans; an by Andy Bryenton

Cattle are hardy and stoical creatures, seemingly built to weather nature’s changing seasons without complaint. However, there’s a reason why shelter becomes a priority at calving time. by Andy Bryenton Ten thousand years ago, in the north of what is now India, one of the most important domestication events of the post-ice-age era happened.

A similar thing happened in northern Europe, where the aurochs sub-breed was even bigger. These were not today’s cattle, which any farmer can tell you are not always docile and tractable. They were bigger, meaner, and taller, with large horns. A bull aurochs was built to take on the apex predators of ancient Europe, like the wolf and the bear. Brave Attempts are being made to bring back the aurochs indeed were those early humans who domesticated them. However, the important factor in our current story is this; the aurochs was not a beast of the open plains. That role was taken by the steppe bison. Instead, the aurochs lived in the forests which spanned the continent. It meant that calving season saw them retreat into the shelter of the trees, allowing for easy defence against predators and respite from the elements. Fast-forward and the aurochs are long gone, replaced with several breeds of cattle shaped by the human need for more meat, more milk, and less homicidal rage. What remains is a necessity for good shelter for calves and calving cattle, harking back to thousands of years of evolution. Researchers have found (and farmers with on-the-ground experience can confirm) that cattle have a fairly narrow ‘thermo-neutral’ band, the temperature where they are happiest.

“Conditions outside the thermoneutral zone of certain cattle types, possibly leading to cold or heat stress and impairment of production if persistent, occasionally occur even in temperate climates,” says a research team led by Eva Van Laer in Belgium. “Such thermal stress is likely to become more common in the future, due to global warming and cattle’s decreased capacity for thermoregulation caused by selection for high productivity.”

Farmers will already know that warm, happy calves have better colostrum uptake and put on condition faster. Shelter technology now provides a variety of options, from durable portable shelters to custom-made barns with soft rubberised flooring. In all cases, however, whether the surface underneath is dirt, bark chip, artificial or natural, what is being replicated is the shelter of those old-growth deciduous forests where the aurochs used to roam. Just like such a natural environment, the shelter checklist contains the following: good ventilation, protection from harsh winter weather such as cold winds and driving rain, the ability of a calf to sit, lie and stand naturally without constriction, and cleanliness, including methods to keep out pests and birds whose droppings may carry bacteria and illness. Shelter options can be tailored to your own farm, your own circumstances and your future intent with regard to herd size and replacement management. Talk to the experts in the field to ensure good coverage and give nature a helping hand.

The aurochs, ancestor of all beef and dairy cattle, was domesticated after what scientists believe was a long period of co-existence next to nomadic human populations.

This scenario is no longer the stuff of science fiction. by Andy Bryenton Hydrogen fuel is now being created in New Zealand, breaking the need to import it for heavy transport applications.

“Seeing this vision come to life is particularly poignant for me as the thirdgeneration owner of Waitomo, given Waitomo celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. What a way to cement in the transition to a low-emissions fuel future for the fourth generation,” said Waitomo Group managing director Jimmy Ormsby at the opening of the Palmerston North site. This expansion of the supply and production network for hydrogen is important for rural contractors because hydrogen is being touted as the replacement for diesel, just as electricity is put forward as the future fuel for passenger cars. Hydrogen tractors have already been built overseas, with New Holland leading the charge. Hydrogen buses are already on Auckland routes. When production is ramped up, the fuel will provide a zero-emission alternative to diesel, not just in the ploughed field but on the road between jobs.

The first hydrogen-powered trucks have landed on Kiwi shores, in the form of Hyundai’s XCIENT range, already in operation with NZ Post. Heavy haulage is a big part of rural contracting, from lime and fertiliser to gravel and big agricultural machinery. Hydrogen power will undoubtedly be a game-changer, reducing emissions and fuel bills in years to come.“Heavy transport emissions are notoriously hard to offset, as electric battery vehicle alternatives can’t offer companies the same productivity,” says Hyundai New Zealand’s Andy Sinclair. “Larger trucks are driven all day, every day, over long distances. Taking multiple hours to recharge a battery regularly is time the truck can’t be on the road.”

A facility near Mōkai in the Taupō region is now online and manufactured for the privateKnownmarket.as Halcyon, the hydrogen venture is a joint one, split half and half between the Tūaropaki Trust and the Obayashi Corporation of Japan. It was opened in December last year and is now turning renewable electricity into transport-fuel grade hydrogen. Meanwhile, the option to fuel up with the most abundant element in the universe is on track in rural New Zealand, too. Waitomo Fuels has plans to expand its hydrogen network, racing ahead of other foreign-owned competitors and Hyundai’s XCIENT truck debut, Waitomo’s move to establish hydrogen stations, and Halcyon’s hydrogen production plant point the way to a diesel-free future in rural New Zealand breaking ground on a hydrogen fuelling station last May.

More chopping — no stopping Arborists working in rural areas need a saw that can adapt to different conditions and tackle a wide range of tasks without excessive downtime and hassles.

Indeed, beyond the trade of chopping problem trees and storm-damaged branches down to size, there’s a whole world of jobs for a versatile mid-sized chainsaw in the backcountry. The holy grail for these machines for several years has been a reliable, simple system to automatically tune the saw for variables such as elevation, temperature, humidity and wood density. Husqvarna has cracked the code with its AutoTune system, as deployed on the current 572XP chainsaws. The addition of this innovation means the saw itself is constantly adjusting tiny parameters to keep delivering smooth power output.

“The next generation AutoTune that optimises engine performance in any and all conditions is an improvement here on previous AutoTune models, 10 times faster,” says Husqvarna H-team ambassador and saw ‘test-driver’ Kiah Martin. The figures tell their own tale. The 572XP boasts 12% more cutting capacity than its predecessor, and a 60% larger usable RPM range, meaning that the deployment of longer bars is very much a possibility for those jobs which need them. Subsystems have also been improved. There’s an additional 20% cooling efficiency over the previous saw in this class. Cooling goes hand in hand with better particulate filtration, helping the 572XP keep dust and grit out of its moving parts. Add in steel anti-vibration mounts, a magnesium crankcase, and a redesigned clutch cover which actively resists clogging, and it’s plain to see that Husqvarna’s engineers have placed longevity and reliability high on their list of features. A soft cut-out feature to eliminate over-revving also helps keep the 572XP’s engine running smoother for much longer. The best part is that AutoTune technology makes it possible to rely on an easy start in the heat of summer during a big job and first thing on an icy morning in the frost. While similar ideas have been tried and honed on other saws, those who have tested the 572XP have been most insistent that here, it’s found its stride.

Paddocks of 501 Chicory are the ideal antidote. When you graze these, you’re not only looking after your cows, you’re also giving stressed ryegrass a break so it can bounce back faster after rain. What next? Contact your seed rep today.

Mineral miner That big tap root doesn’t just help 501 Chicory keep growing in dry weather — it also mines the soil for excess minerals like nitrogen and potassium. Sow it on your ef uent blocks, and after grazing, your cows will happily help redistribute those essential nutrients more evenly back around the rest of the farm.

At a payout of $9kgMS milksolids, that equates to a potential gain of $450ha, and unlike supplement you don’t need any machinery to feed it out or rely on suppliers to deliver it, either.

Wallabies are a significant pest and threat to our environment and native species’ habitat. They eat seedlings, grass and crops, causing costly losses to forestry and farming by competing for pasture with stock and damaging forestry“Waikatoseedlings.Regional Council is now working with a dog surveillance team to look for a further presence of wallabies in the Mōkau area. Scat was located by a dog on August 2, and a footprint from a wallaby was also found.”

“We have been talking to landowners, of course, but as wallabies are both shy and nocturnal, they are not seen very often, particularly when the numbers are low.”

“The wallaby find was incredibly disappointing as the council was working hard with Bay of Plenty Regional Council to stop wallabies from spreading from a defined containment area within the Bay.

Senior Biosecurity Officer Dave Byers, who leads the council’s progressive containment management programme for wallabies near the boundary with Bay of Plenty, said a landowner found the wallaby with a badly broken hind leg and a reasonably large joey in her pouch on July 25 “Being2022.onthe west coast, Mōkau is so far outside the containment area for dama wallaby in the North Island that we can only suspect it was assisted by a human to get there,” he said.

The scat is being DNA tested for gender, and the dog surveillance team will be widening their search area. Trail camera surveillance may also be undertaken on the pasture-bush margin.

“Wallabies are classified as an Unwanted Organism under the Biosecurity Act. It is illegal to have, hold, move or transport wallabies in New Zealand without a specific permit. Those who do can face significant penalties. As an individual, you can be fined up to $100,000 or sent to prison for up to five years.

“Wallabies have been pushing their way into the region from the Bay and left unchecked. It has been conservatively estimated that one-third of the North Island could be subjected to the impacts of wallabies in less than 50 years.”
