Agribusiness rolled out on school curriculum

A pilot scheme offering agribusiness courses at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton has been hailed a success, with seven more schools becoming involved in the project. Forty-eight students trialled the pilot curriculum at St Paul’s this year and another 85 have signed up for 2015. The programme aims to increase the number of students considering a career in the agricultural industry. St Paul’s headmaster Grant Lander said the new curriculum has been industry-driven. “A large part of the effort in developing the agribusiness curriculum has been partnering with agricultural industry organisations, universities and business. “All involved with this initiative believe we are helping create something of national significance and it is genuinely innovative and ground-breaking.” A $2 million partnership investment with principal support from DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand, and a number of other business partners has made the curriculum development possible. Although an estimated 11.4 percent of New Zealand’s workforce is employed in the agriculture industry, the number of university graduates in agriculture-related fields has dropped in recent years. Mr Lander said the development of the curriculum is due to a gap in the current educational system for agribusiness and the impact that gap has on our industries. DairyNZ strategy and investment leader for people and business Mark Paine said the agribusiness education partnership is crucial for the future of the industry. “We have forecast employment needs, and at graduate level alone we need 1,000 people a year coming into the industry. Currently we are nowhere near this figure,” he said. Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s project manager sector capability Doug Macredie believes it is important that

the best and brightest students have the opportunity to choose agribusiness as part of their studies, as they will have an important role to play in the sector going forward. As part of the new curriculum development, St Paul’s recently hosted the Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy to officially launch its Centre of Excellence for Agriculture Science and Business. The seven other schools formally involved trialling the new programme in 2016 are: Southland Boys (Southland); Southland Girls (Southland); John McGlashan College (Otago); Christchurch Boys (Christchurch); Feilding High School (Manawatu); Lindisfarne College (Hawke’s Bay), and Mt Albert Grammar School (Auckland). Following the pilot, and the Ministry of Education approval, it is hoped to offer Year 12 and 13 students at participating schools an NCEA qualification in agribusiness.

n just its second year, the event attracted several keen competitors from high schools and Young Farmer clubs. The competitors, aged between 15-25 years, were assessed in several sections judging sheep, beef, dairy and fleece. Waikato A and P Association vicepresident Doug Lineham said the competition has been rejuvenated in an attempt to encourage young people to participate in agricultural disciplines. “It’s time to recognise our biggest asset and that’s our young people.” Mr Lineham initially approached the Hamilton City Young Farmers Club to gauge interest for the competition. With their support, he organised a pilot event in 2013, followed by a training day this year in a lead-up to the Young Judges competition. “I’ve had a wonderful career in the agricultural industry and would like

to give something back.” Mr Lineham said with the wide-ranging age group of competitors eligible for the event, there was quite a cross-section of abilities. “Hence the training days to point them in the right direction.” As livestock were paraded in the showring, the competitors were given eight minutes to select their order of placings then explain the reasons behind their decisions. Competitors were judged equally on their ability to select the winning line-up (in keeping with the placings of the over-judge), and their public speaking skills when presenting their reasons. Hamilton Boys’ High School student Graham Johnson won the event, Hamilton City Young Farmers Club member Hannah Cameron was runnerup, and North King Country Young Farmers Club member Sophie Johnson placed third. Graham and Hannah will now progress to the 2015 Royal Show to be held in Hawke’s Bay, to compete in
the national Young Judges competition. The winner of that event will have the opportunity to represent New Zealand at an agricultural show in Australia during 2016. The Waikato A & P Show Young Judges’ competition was held over one day and well supported by organisers, competitors, and spectators. Local farmers and breeders supplied the livestock presented in the competition. Hannah was first introduced to the concept when she went along to the practice day. “I went along to help out,” she said. Although Hannah has a dairy farm background, she is now a qualified pilot and works as a flight instructor at the Hamilton Airport. “I still love the agricultural industry,” she said. She decided to join the Hamilton City Young Farmers Club two years ago. “It gets you back in the agricultural community.” Hannah said it was great to see the different types of animals

Mr Lineham has plans to extend the competition in the near future. “It’s part of a programme to help young people to be able to recognise, judge and select animals for their various attributes. “I want to grow this.” He would like smaller shows in the Waikato to host Young Judges competitions, with the winners progressing to a regional final. “Seventy percent of cattle in New Zealand are born on a dairy farm,” he said. “Therefore the beef industry relies on the dairy industry for its cattle.” Mr Lineham would like to see beef cattle raised from calves then exhibited by young people in prime heifer and steer classes. “We need to start getting young people involved again.” This year’s national Young Judges competition was hosted by the Manawatu A & P Association. When European settlers first came to the Waikato, the broad and fertile plains which now form the heartland of New Zealand’s dairy industry were of less interest to pioneering families than the vast river system which drains and nourishes them.

ising on the slopes of Ruapehu and winding across the country over four hundred kilometres to the sea, the Waikato river was a superhighway for shipping, and, as it was in pre-colonial times, a vital source of sustenance for Maori and Pakeha alike. But the untapped potential of the river to generate power was only realised later, when advances in science and engineering made the hydro-electric concept possible. Schemes such as the Coalgate powerhouse in Canterbury brought the foreign innovation of electric energy from huge turbines to our shores more than a century ago, and here in the North Island the impetus to explore the river’s potential came from the settler’s lust for gold. scheme, commissioned in 1910. It was established not by the government of the day, but by private interests keen to tap the river’s might and turn it to industry. Situated only 80 kilometres from the great stamping mills of Waihi and the Karangahake Gorge, Hora Hora was constructed by the Waihi gold mining company, who were compelled to harness the cutting-edge electrical machinery of the day to improve their output of precious metal. Before the ribbon was cut at Coalgate in Canterbury (a government scheme), power was already being generated by the Hora Hora development, but used exclusively to drive the immense mills which crushed and sorted ore at Waihi. In 1919 the Hora Hora dam and powerhouse were bought by the crown, with their capacity upgraded to become

the biggest hydro-electric power source in the country. Hamilton and Cambridge owe their first electric lights and amenities to Hora Hora’s engineers, and by 1926 over 10 megawatts capacity had been achieved. Hydro-electric power had arrived, and between this time and 1971 a total of eight power stations were erected, leading to the provision today of over 13 percent of the nation’s electric power. From Lake Taupo, water now takes up to eighteen hours to traverse the full system of dams, lakes, floodgates and

Beginning at the Aratiatia station — which controls the flow of the Aratiatia rapids debouching from Lake Taupo — the river flows on to Lake Ohakuri, the largest man-made lake in the Waikato. A controversial project, the Ohakuri Dam submerged sites sacred to local Maori Iwi, as well as an extensive geothermal field, including the largest geysers in New Zealand. Third in line is the Atiamuri power station, followed by the much larger Whakamaru project. These ‘big three’ — Ohakuri, Atiamuri and Whakamaru were all constructed from the ‘hydro town’ of Mangakino, a major centre
for engineering and labour during the 20th century as these ambitious projects were undertaken. The largest, and most complex — the two-stage Maraetai power station — comes next downstream, and is a testament to the innovation of those engineers tasked with building the Waikato dams. Situated in a narrow gorge and built on difficult volcanic rock, lessons learned here have been used by engineers worldwide in massive civic works. Finally, water flows through the Waipapa power station and on to the historically listed Arapuni powerhouse, built in 1947 and continually generating for over 80 years. At last, the river empties into Lake Karapiro, bringing history full circle. Because it is under the surface of this man made lake — made famous as a training ground for our top olympic rowers — that the drowned remains of the old Hora Hora powerhouse are submerged, swallowed up by the march of progress in 1947. As the lake filled, power shortages forced the engineers to keep the turbines spinning, and local people gathered to watch the massive iron behemoths thrashing the new lake to foam. Apocryphally, turbine number seven refused to shut down, jammed open

by a fault as the water rose, and this gave rise to the legend that the Hora hora powerhouse simply refused to die. Today, eight great power stations stand astride the Waikato River on its way to the sea, providing a source of energy which is both environmentally sound and eternally renewable. At the time of their construction there was much debate, consternation and even outrage at the inundation of farms, homes and villages, but it is arguable that without them we would be very much in the dark.
As for Hora Hora — just over a century after it was first pressed into service, the old power station now rests beneath the murky depths of Lake Karapiro, unable to be visited even by divers due to poor visibility. A tragic end, perhaps, for New Zealand’s first experiment in hydroelectric energy generation, but one which is almost fitting — swallowed up by the waters it used to tame, and overshadowed by the eighth and final great dam which replaced it.

By the time you get to read this, the year of 2104 will almost be done. What a year, what a roller coaster ride for everybody, talk about ups and downs and round and rounds, from a strong milk solid payout and then it’s vertical plunge into the ground with a shower of sparks, a dizzy head a big gulp of oxygen and hey, it’s back to keeping the farm pumping and the New Zealand economy going. We wish all the New Zealand food and beverage producers a very merry Christmas and thank them all for the effort they make on a daily basis to keep our economy growing; with special wishes to our loyal customers and the band of new customers who have joined our ranks. More and more producers are asking for information about our multi-mineral rich fertilisers and about the natural track we have been on for the past twenty years, working with Mother
Nature and all that natural capital she provides to make production possible. There is strong talk from Australia about a move away from the chemical age in pursuit of better quality produce. Every dog has its day, as the revolution spins towards more natural methods and sustainable and eco-friendly production. Over the past 10 years I have recognised an increasing demand for food produced in a safe certified nutritiously dense manner as people all
over the globe become more concerned about their health and what they are eating. Latest reports out of UK (one of New Zealand’s leading markets) say that 83% of people there are eating some types of organic food. Renewed call for illuminated school bus signs Rural Women New Zealand is deeply concerned about an incident this month in which a Canterbury teen was hit while crossing the road, after getting off a school bus. “The accident may well have been avoided if the bus had been fitted with illuminated 20km/h signs to remind drivers of the speed limit past a stopped school bus,” says Rural Women NZ’s national president, Wendy McGowan. Rural Women NZ took part in a trial of new LED signs in Ashburton last year, which included a public education
and police enforcement campaign. The trial proved very successful in slowing drivers and Rural Women NZ hopes that the signs will be approved for general use on school buses in 2015. “Rural Women NZ has been advocating for years for public awareness and driver education around school bus safety, especially the 20km/h speed limit in either direction. Using technology to get the message across to drivers has been a big part of our campaign.”

Either Way It’s 20K — Rural Women NZ has renewed its call for 20km/h signs to be approved for all school buses
The ‘Either Way It’s 20k’ Ashburton trial saw a marked drop in speeds when the flashing 20km/h signs were operating. “The flashing lights and illuminated signs are visible for a considerable distance, alerting drivers to slow down especially in a 100km/h zone,” says Mrs McGowan. The NZ Transport Agency agrees the results of the Ashburton trial are promising, provided they are widely and
consistently used on entire school bus fleets, and supported by active and widespread community engagement and publicity. The Transport Agency is in discussions with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Education and Police on the possibility of wider use of the signs from next year. Since 1987, 23 children have been killed in New Zealand when crossing the road to or from school buses. At least 47 more have been seriously injured.

Ask any of the top riders on the motocross circuit — or flip through the biographies in any magazine featuring the up-and-comers in the sport. All but the most forgetful will thank their parents for years of support — and those who don’t will likely have some explaining to do next time they visit mum and dad! ‘Start ‘em young’ is the philosophy for off-road riding, whether or not your little tykes plan to go competitive or if they just want to join their siblings and parents having some fun on the trails or on the track. With Christmas just around the corner, we gathered some wise words about getting your kids started in off-road riding, to make this experience as much fun — and as safe — as possible. First up, go with a tried and trusted brand. This year’s AA and New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild car of the year awards have provided some surprises and some clear victors, as members voted for their pick of 2014’s top auto across a variety of categories. The danger is high Working at a height on building sites has come under new scrutiny and regulation. The days of workers swanning about on roofs and high places are over. Building owners and contractors need to ensure the right safety steps are in place before work starts. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is running a programme to reduce the number of injuries and deaths that result from falls from height in New Zealand construction. More than half the falls reported to the Ministry’s Labour Group from the construction sector occur from less than three metres, and most of these falls are from ladders and roofs. The cost is estimated at $24 million each year. Everyone must ensure that they are safe when working at height. This includes selecting the right equipment for working safely at height, for example edge protection, scaffolding, using a mobile elevating work platform or a total restraint system. The Labour Group has made it clear to the construction sector that doing nothing is not an option. You should expect to see an explanation of how safety will be
achieved when engaging a contractor for work that will be carried out at height. This may include quotes and method statements which set out safe work procedures and details of safety equipment. Contractors who choose to work unsafely are at risk of seriously injuring themselves and their workers. Health and safety inspectors will stop any work at height until they are satisfied that it can be achieved safely. What is consent?
It has myriad meanings but in the case of construction it can be put simply as permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies with the rules. It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Some minor work is exempt under the Act, but consent is required for most work including: • swimming pools, spa pools and fencing • retaining walls over 1.5 metres (no surcharge) • retaining walls any height incurring a surcharge • decks over 1.5 metres high • pergolas attached to buildings • free-standing non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres
• plumbing and drainage work • demolition • relocation of buildings • additions, alterations to existing buildings • new buildings • change of use (may include an increase in occupant numbers) • heating including fireplaces • ventilation and air-conditioning systems (commercial) • small dams (more than 35,000 litres of water) You can apply online or you will need application forms that can be obtained from council’s websites, or council office, and consents are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

The real cost of lameness A few weeks ago, I had a discussion with a farmer about trimming cow’s feet. He was managing this farm and his contract stated that he was required to have a minimum number of staff members. Because of that he had plenty of labour power so one of the jobs that he got his staff to do was to trim the lame cows. That seems to make sense
especially with the milk price the way it is — you want to save as much money as you can, right? Let’s think about that for a bit. If money is a bit tight and you have toothache, would you get one of your staff to sort it out for you? Or likewise, do some of you, who know how to inseminate a cow, take on this responsibility yourself this year to save money? For most farmers the answer will be no to both of these questions and I would assume that the reason for that, in most cases, will be because of the quality of the job done, and in the case of your tooth ache, it may have a pain factor as well. Most people realise that the better your in-calf rate is, the better your bottom line profit will be. It pays to get an experienced AI technician to inseminate your cows, and so the same is true for trimming lame cows. It does pay to utilise the skills and experience of qualified hoof trimmers if

you want to save time and money. I hear you saying, ‘how can I save money by paying someone to do a job that one of my staff can probably do just as well?’ I guess the answer to that will be largely influenced by your understanding and acceptance of the skill involved in proper hoof trimming, which will minimise the recovery time of your cows ensuring they return to full productivity quicker, but also with the very real difficulty in quantifying the cost of lameness. Do you know how much lameness costs you? Can you work it out? It’s not that easy is it? A lot of the cost of lameness comes from reduced productivity, and that varies per cow. There are many factors at play like the time of the year when the cow is going lame, the severity of the lameness, etc. DairyNZ worked out that the average cost of a lame cow is

around $500 and that on average 35% of your herd will be lame in a season. So a farm milking 1,000 cows could have a $175,000 lameness bill in a season. That is not so much a bill that is being paid out, but more so a cheque that is not coming in. We worked out that if the cost of a lame cow is $500 (and I think that is conservative) then the industry is missing out on nearly a billion dollars a year. In a season where you need to think particularly carefully of each financial decision you make, it is important to be aware of false economy and ensure you are utilising your staff where they are going to be most productive in using their individual skill sets. This is a subject that I will seek to address in my next article in a little more detail.

Slash spreading costs
We all know what happens when the proverbial brown matter hits the fan! Bingo! However, before spreading that valuable by-product of milk production back onto the land, there is money to be saved by ensuring effluent collection and holding sumps are designed right. Presco Group’s Farm Dairy Effluent consultants have found that farmers who have installed Prosumps, New Zealand’s leading concrete effluent holding sump, have experienced large cost reductions. The initial benefit of a vertical walled holding pond is in meeting regional council requirements. A lined, earthen pond needs sloping side walls which results in a much larger ‘footprint’. Presco has had some farmers in higher rainfall areas being able to reduce their storage capacity requirements by 20% by installing the Prosump. The second benefit of the Prosump design is not seen in the paddock. Lower pumping costs are achieved due to not pumping the extra rainwater captured. Reduced energy costs come from more efficient stirring. The Prosump is a circular sump with a special inverted cone floor design which helps to stir up the effluent in a quarter of the time it takes to stir up a rectangle pond. This design reduces the amount of solids build up and the full nutrient benefit from the effluent can get back onto paddocks.
The Prosump is built tough from 150mm thick pre-cast concrete walls and features triple-sealed panel joints. Traditional pond failures such as corrosion, punctures or leaks are gone for good! A Prosump will just laugh at the odd knock from a stirrer blade or digger bucket and you can kiss goodbye to expensive liner repair bills! An independent warrant of fitness Getting a certified ‘WOF’ assessor can only be good practice, particularly when a farmer has upgraded his effluent systems but may may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. ‘Then you know what is needed to upgrade. For a sharemilker moving onto a farm being able to see a ‘WOF’ report means you know what kind of system you’re taking on’. There is no legislation or regulations around a dairy effluent ‘WOF’, it is a voluntary programme, sort of like a building inspection. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. For instance the assessor will insert a flow meter and pressure gauge into the mainline as that helps identify if there is a problem with the pump. They carry out a full irrigator inspection and test the application depth and average rate. They also calculate the amount of storage for the
type of effluent management system on the farm. After the assessor has completed the work a report is prepared for the farm owner/manager. All the certified ‘WOF’ assessors have several years of experience. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on-farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WOF’ assessors. All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on. It’s just a matter of calling up your local Certified ‘WOF’ assessor and making a time for them to come out. Flexi Tanks are in an enclosed strong bladder with tanks that can store from 100,000 litres up to 1,000,000 litres of dairy effluent or water. They are simple to install. Just roll out the bladder on a 100mm horizontal bed of sand, attach to your current effluent or water system and storage problems are solved, eliminating expensive engineering consent work. The advantages of Flexi Tanks over other storage forms include: • Enclosed tank so there is no need to calculate for rainwater falling into your open tank so your total effluent storage requirement will be less • Rapid easy installation • No smell as tanks are totally enclosed, with gas vents included • No air in tank or hard crust on top of effluent • Full 10-year manufacturer’s warranty for textile and manufacture, with a multi layered fabric with a tensile strength of 450kg per 5cm • Safe, as the tank is enclosed no security fencing is required • Depreciation at 25% per annum as they are a tangible asset which can be rolled up and sold if need be. • Manufactured in France by La Baronne Citaf and used around the world since 1959
