Dogs, sheep and shearing are not things you typically associate with Japan — but Piopio old boy Ross MacDonald is changing that Ross has been home only a couple of weeks and we took the chance to talk to him about his adventures in The Land of the Rising Sun. Ross manages a farming show in the vein most Kiwis are familiar with, but he stages it in Japan. “It’s a family entertainment-style show that gives Japanese people a taste of all the typical things you find on a New Zealand farm,” says Ross. “Dogs come in and muster the sheep. There’s shearing and all the typical things you find on a farm.” The show promotes the farming side of New Zealand and hopes to attract more visitors and tourists to our shores. “We’ve taken a little slice of New Zealand to Japan, and hopefully it will encourage people to visit us here,” Ross says. The scale is more than most Kiwis can imagine with an average of over 10,000 visitors at each performance. “We have a team of Japanesespeaking staff who’ve shaped the show, which includes dogs jumping onto the backs of sheep, shearing demonstrations, cows, and even horses. The Japanese facilities house every animal imaginable.
stringent than ours. If that quake had hit here not a building would be left standing,” Ross says. Ross is currently in NZ but still managing his Asian based team via remote. The demand for entertainment has reduced since the disasters. Ross flies to and from Japan at least five times a year. “The air-points are good, he says. Got to be some perks eh?”
Ross MacDonald takes a little slice of New Zealand to Japan
“We have been affected by the latest natural disasters, so we’re not functioning too well right now,” Ross says. Although cosmetically damaged by the earth-quake and the tsunami, the buildings are still standing strong. Ross says one of the towns where they put on the show had 120 people killed. “I was over there during the quake. There is nothing like it,” says Ross. “The Japanese building codes are much more

Septic Tank Owners How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and
bblockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Ron Simpson of Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™. For Septi-Cure™ – call 0800-109-202 www.ecoworld.co.nz Email: info@ecoworld.co.nz

Waikato Farming Lifestyles
An Organic Life
Getting up before the crack of dawn is all in a day’s work for farmers worldwide, but for farm unit manager John Leech, the early mornings now herald exciting new challenges. That’s because John works for Marphona Farms, the largest organic dairy farm in Australasia that holds AsureQuality full organic certification Raised on a conventional dairy farm in the Waikato and managing various dairy farms once he left home, organic farming was a completely new way of doing things for him. “Organic farming requires a whole new mind-set. You have to be so much more

cautious in your way of doing things,” he says. A working knowledge of homeopathic treatments is essential, because homeopathy is always the first line of defence when a cow needs treatment for anything from mastitis to pink eye, calving troubles and lameness.
Each weed has to be grubbed out by hand and the land area farmed covers 1,400 hectares Homeopathic treatments also require a lot more care and attention to start with, because they are only effective if the correct remedy is used. This sounds obvious, but with over twenty recommended remedies just for different types of mastitis, it requires a great deal of attention to detail. The farmers really have to pay attention to the cows and treat them individually depending on their unique symptoms.
John Leech and his family enjoying an organic life
Weed control requires a lot more backbreaking work, with staff not able to spray the weeds. Each weed has to be grubbed out by hand — quite an undertaking when the entire land area farmed by Marphona Farms covers 1,400 hectares. They raise all their own stock too, so the animals are organically raised from day one. Another major difference with organic farming is that fertilisers cannot be used and supplements fed to the cows all have to be produced organically.
Marphona Farms grows organic maize and cuts grass silage to supplement the available grass. It requires very careful management of the available grass to ensure that the cows have enough feed year round. For John, it has been quite a learning curve. “I’ve had to change my whole way of thinking about farming, but it’s really exciting. It’s a healthier lifestyle for me and my family.”
Waikato Farming Lifestyles June 2011 On-site on Marphona Farms is the Green Valley processing plant. Various products are on offer, including certified 100% organic milk and regular milk, cream and chocolate milk, produced for the most part with organic milk. This is where John buys milk and cream for his family. It has the benefit of having been processed for safety, but is treated gently and carefully to maintain all the goodness of natural, pure milk. “It’s great. We drink pure, healthy milk and there are orchards on the farm. In season, I take my wife and two little boys out to them and we pick bags of fruit. We’re also thinking of getting some chickens so we can collect free-range organic eggs. Despite the challenges, for this farmer, organic is the way to go.

Close Encounters
Rita van Vught at Onewhero near Port Waikato is an animal nut who has put her love of animals into a business proposition called Close Encounters Farm Experience “David, my husband, has been on this farm milking 130 cows since 1991. The farm is 230 acres so he let me have a few little paddocks to offer the farm experience to school children. The general community knew I was a bit of a soft touch and they’ve been bringing me unwanted animals for years. “Some kids have never been on a tractor or played in hay bales. It’s so enjoyable to watch them experiencing with firsttime eyes, the things we take for granted. We give them each a Milky Bar so they can link the animals back to the food they eat. “On the last school visit the cows were calving and one gave birth while the kids were around. There was absolute silence as the calf entered the world, and then murmurs of yukk, and uugh, and what’s that Mummy? Then they saw the calf licked clean. “In the last few months we’ve received many tourists, mostly Asian. People from Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, take photos of things we don’t even notice — a hay bale, a feather on the ground, drains, pine trees. “We start them in the paddocks with the Scottish Highland cattle, the Chilean llama, donkeys, emus, and pigs. They can

feed all the animals, and pet 90% of them. They can ride donkeys if they want, and the kunekune. We have light saddles for the donkeys so people can feel the movement of the animal. We control the bridle which we really put on so the donkeys know it’s working time. “Then we take the visitors in a trailer on the back of the quad into the middle of the dairy herd. That’s

the thing they really rave about. They feed out the hay and of course the cows mass around the trailer to get at the hay. Some visitors get scared and want to know if cows eat humans. “We take them into the cowshed and show them the process of milk from the cow to tanker to table. “We have exotic animals but they don’t have

IT’S A CLASS OF IT’S OWN.
“At the moment our Scottish Highland cow has a gorgeous calf and the miniature pony has a foal. We brought in another emu recently, hoping for some babies, but our girl wasn’t having the boy and tried to decapitate him, so the poor soul is down the bottom end of the paddock for now.
With no compromise on quality, along with outstanding performance the AB RANGE is an investment for every farmer.

Hugo’s Place
by Theresa Sjoquist
Hugo is a ten-year-old golden Labrador ex-guide dog. He’s the apple of Jude MacDonald’s eye and has lent his name to the dog homestay Jude runs at Makomako between Raglan and Kawhia Jude, a qualified vet nurse, was raised in Whangarei. “I’ve been here for six years. In the beginning I commuted to Hamilton for work every day. The road was awful in winter and was often an hour and a half trip each way. “Because we have 500 acres including several kilometres of Aotea Harbour shoreline, we often looked after other people’s pets. I decided to provide a service for people who wanted their animals to have a good time while they went on holiday. The result has been Hugo’s Place. “Now we’re fully booked 60% of the time. In fact, it’s difficult to think about taking holidays ourselves. We thought the winters would be quiet, but that’s when people travel to warmer climates

so we’re surprisingly busy then, as well as over the usual holiday periods. “I only take two dogs at a time unless they come from the same home. Our clients need to be honest in their assessment of their dog’s behaviour — for the dog’s safety. It’s a huge property with few fences, so we need to know if they don’t respond well to voice control. We wouldn’t put the dog in a situation where voice control is critical for its safety. They need to be well-socialised, non-aggressive animals because they live in the house with us, sleep inside, and have to be in Hugo’s company. They need to be stockfriendly too. “It doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t accept them, but we need to be aware so we can make adjustments for the dog. Most people will look on the website www.hugosplace.co.nz and can readily assess for themselves if their dog is suitable for this kind of homestay. Small dogs aren’t because they can’t be contained with the type of fencing we have. “The dogs are well exercised, and they have Hugo’s company. All our dogs come from loving homes but they can sulk when they get back to their parents because the parents don’t have the time or property to exercise them like we do, they don’t have companion animals, and they often go out to work so the dog spends a lot of time alone. “Cost-wise, Hugo’s Place compares favourably with kennels. We provide food and feed them separately, but owners are welcome to bring anything special or extra the dog needs.” Currently supplementing her income with relief teaching, Jude is also an amateur photographer with a special enough eye that her work readily sells out of galleries. “I recently visited Bukit Lawang village in Sumatra on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park to photograph orangutans.”

National Fieldays Event Highlights AG Art: Passion and fashion collide at the Ag Art Wear shows, held between 10am and 1pm daily at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays in the Ag Art Wear pavilion. Ag Art Wear is a competitive sub-event within NZ National Agricultural Fieldays. The challenge is for designers to create ‘wearable art’ using materials found or used on farms or the land. The show incorporates fashion, farming, drama and dance. Fieldays NZ Wire/Wiremark Fencing Championships: It’s almost as thrilling as crossing swords. Fencing is not for the faint-hearted. Competitors need endurance and fitness, as heats can take up to six hours, with contestants attempting to complete a 40-metre fence. Fencing has become a large part of the farming tradition, especially at field days. You can be sure that at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays, the latest fencing techniques are being used. No. 8 Wire National Art Award: Is there any other gauge? The New Zealand National Fieldays Society sponsors the No. 8 Wire National Art Award, organised by Waikato Museum and ArtsPost Galleries. The Exhibition Opening Evening and Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday June 9, 6pm at ArtsPost Galleries. Prizes: First Place $4,000, 2nd Place $1,500, 3rd Place $1,000.

A Temporary City Every year since 1968, about this time, a small city springs up south of Hamilton at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays. The event is a showcase of everything agricultural or of interest to people of the land. The National Fieldays is run by a notfor-profit society that relies heavily on volunteer input. The Society was set up over 40 years ago to provide a conduit between urban and rural business. Land at the Fieldays venue, Mystery Creek Events Centre, was purchased by the Society in 1971 and has been developed constantly since that time. More land has been purchased and the society now owns 95 hectares. The NZ National Agricultural Fieldays event remains the cornerstone of the Society, with more and more events now being hosted every year.

National Fieldays Bike Torque Brian Sheat, Heartland Yamaha Director, is hoping the weather will be fine for this year’s Fieldays. “It’s what we do. We’re right in the heart of the farming sector, based in Morrinsville, and that’s what the Fieldays are all about, says Brian. “You don’t get 30 to 40,000 people through Morrinsville — which you do on the site, he says. This will be Brian’s fifteenth year attending the Fieldays and he says that historically it is the biggest sales generator of the year.

Although some models may be limited due to shortages created by the Japan tsunami, the full range, or nearly the full range will be on display at the Yamaha exhibit on Road C. “If anyone is thinking about buying a new bike, this will be the time to do it. We’ll have some great specials posted on a board and Yamaha Finance is offering some good deals, says Brian. All the Yamaha products, including All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), AG bikes, offroad, motorcross bikes and trail bikes will be on offer. Yamaha NZ is sponsoring the stand and dealers from around the greater Waikato and further afield manage the exhibit. Brian has clocked up nearly 25 years in the motor trade industry. After leaving school he worked in a parts department providing parts for cars, bikes and even tractors. In 1995 he bought his own franchise and has tied his fortune to farming. “The pay-outs for the farmers haven’t been good. If there’s a drought we feel it as hard as the farmers. When farmers close their cheque books, so do we, says Brian.
“We’re all hoping this year will be a good year due to the higher milk-fat pay-outs, and that the farmers will come to our shop and walk away happy with the friendly service. “Our AG 100 and AG 200 are probably the best farm bikes around. “But all the top bike brands will be on display and they each have different features. It’s a horse for course situation, but we feel we have the field covered with the range of Yamahas on offer, Brian says.
NASTY cut to the hand Let’s face it...hoof trimming is part of good herd management. However, there are safe ways and unsafe ways to do it! Recently we heard of a situation where a farmer had a cow tied up to a gate for trimming. The cow kicked out and well... the rest is history as you can see above....

Event Highlights Standard Farming Tractors, right through to highly modified machines, with only a passing resemblance to their original form, are all present and horsepower is the only unit of measure that counts. Tractor preparation and modification is taken seriously by the competitors and many months are often spent working on the machines. Friendly rivalry and fierce competition go hand-in-hand with drivers enjoying the camaraderie of tractor pulling. Stihl Festival of Logging Skills: Can I borrow ya’ chainsaw? Every man, and some select women, love anything motorised or destructive. Watch these clever artisans carve out stellar creations using nothing more than a chainsaw and a vision. Visit the STIHL events arena at sites J14-16 behind the STIHL marquee to watch the best chainsaw operators compete at this year’s Fieldays. On Thursday and Friday, New Zealand’s best carvers compete for a share of the $3,000 prize pool in the Waikato Challenge Carving Event. The public then bids for their favourite piece of art in the auction
held on Friday at 3.30pm, with all proceeds going to St John. On Saturday the Castrol Logging Skills Competition takes place, with teams from around New Zealand competing for $3,000 in prizes. The six-man teams will compete in a variety of chainsaw skill events to decide the winning team. The Ladies Race will also be held on Saturday, as well as the impressive STIHL Hot Saw Race, where modified chainsaws send the wood chips flying. All in all the Stihl Festival of Logging Skills can be described as creative, fast and noisy fun! Cutting Horse Demonstrations: Wander along to the Agrisea Stock Handling Area to watch one of the most exhilarating events at the NZ Agricultural Fieldays; the Cutting Horse Demonstrations. The cutting horse originated from the Old West during cattle drives as a way to control the herd. The same techniques have been turned into a sport, inspiring cowboys from all over the world. The horse and rider must work together to carefully select a beast from the herd, then without disturbance, ‘cut it’ from the rest. It is then up to the horse to keep the beast from returning to the herd by matching the animal move for move, illustrating to the crowd the natural ‘cow instinct’ of the horse. Catch the cowboys working with the horses in the Agrisea Stock Handling Area during Fieldays. Innovation Centre The Fieldays Innovation Centre hosts finalist entrants from the Fieldays Innovation Centre Awards, vying for the prestigious Golden Standard Award. To qualify, the invention must not be advertised, marketed or sold to the public, either before or during Fieldays 2011. Located right in the heart of Fieldays, this well regarded competition provides a great opportunity to win prizes and gain exposure at Fieldays.

National Fieldays Wool on Centre Stage
“PWC believes we are witnessing the beginnings of a major renewal of this wonderful, sustainable fibre” “The entire value-chain for wool will be laid out in our exhibition, so that visitors will understand how the simple fibre we see ends up in some of the finest garments, textiles, homes and premises in the world. “The theme of the sponsorship is ‘Breaking barriers to productivity’. This is particularly relevant at the moment to wool farming,” says Mr de Lautour. “Over the past two years PWC has literally broken the barrier to productivity on the farm as far as strong wool goes. In partnership with Elders Primary Wool, we launched a new, wool brand — Just

A passionate statement about wool as a supreme natural fibre is the centrepiece of Mystery Creek this year. Primary Wool Co-operative, a farmer owned group which invests in adding value to wool, will create an exhibition in the Mystery Creek Pavilion showing how the best wool from New Zealand is farmed, right through to the way carpets made from wool are sold worldwide. The exhibition will also show other uses of wool. “We will pay homage to wool as a nation-builder and show it as a focus for a huge future for the farming sector in export markets,” says Chairman of Primary Wool Co-operative, Bay de Lautour. “PWC believes we are witnessing the beginnings of a major renewal of this wonderful, sustainable fibre. We want to salute that — for all New Zealanders who visit NZ National Agricultural Fieldays — and raise the awareness of wool for carpets and rugs. We also want to remind farmers that they have a high value product which they need to farm carefully, to conserve its supreme quality — in order to get top prices.

It is a strategy to get the customer to respond emotionally to the quality, beauty and sustainability of this natural fibre, and to choose wool carpets. “Just Shorn is also a major break away from the historic model of wool marketing. The Same Soup in a Different Bowl Despite promises to fix our economy and improve our struggling living standards the current National-led government is proving itself to be just another group of politicians micro managing themselves towards a second term in office Fifty years of poor political leadership has seen our country slip from the fourth wealthiest country in the world to borrowing $300 million per week. Spending is now higher than it was under the last Labour government. In the face of constant negative attacks on our farming sector and a continual lack of investment in rural communities, it is our farmers — and in particular our dairy cows — that have stopped us becoming just another basket case like Spain, Ireland, and Greece. And, without the Economic Community to shore us up! It seems no one in government is prepared to make hard decisions and
lead. We have become a nation of planners and report writers rather than doers. Local government are required to prepare annual plans and go through a consultation process that is so resource hungry and time consuming that by the time it is completed it’s time to start the next one. Then we have the Long Term Community Plans and district and regional plans on top of this. Hundreds of millions of dollars are invested in planning that delivers bugger all outcomes other than to fund the pet consultants’ next Mercedes. We spend millions on plans that few read, or are even interested in, while we
struggle to fund essential infrastructure. It’s madness! The agricultural sector is just as bad. How many sector strategies do we need to fund before we actually do something? Spending $500,000 on a red meat sector strategy has been great for Deloitte’s profitability but it reported nothing new or breathtaking. The message has been the same for decades and, if history tells us anything, now that we have a new strategy document, the industry will feel they have achieved something and all the players will go back to what they have always done, achieving what they have always achieved. I look forward to being proven wrong!

The term ‘strategy’ is the most abused word in New Zealand’s vocabulary. The NZ interpretation of a strategy is generally a large document that is difficult, or in most cases, impossible to implement. We have produced many of these over the years. Anything ‘strategic’ is usually something that loses money, or needs more money to be thrown at it, with little likelihood of a decent return. A real strategy is a detailed action plan for success. If the Red Meat Sector strategy is not, or cannot be, implemented then it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on and it’s not a strategy. It’s a $500,000 doorstop. The consultant will hide behind the sector participants’ inability to work together, or something similar, and gleefully look forward to writing another doorstop in a few years’ time. Local government plans and most central government’s strategies are of similar ilk. Behind the farm gate farmers are successful because they prepare business plans and budgets that have to work. There is no free lunch. We survive because we actually do it — not talk or write about it. As a country we need to adopt this same philosophy.

The planned conservation of the historic DC3 aircraft formerly owned and flown by agricultural aviation pioneer Ossie James is off to a flying start with the first sod turned on a project that will see the aircraft fully enclosed in a dedicated learning centre and returned back into it original James Aviation colours. The project is being undertaken by a registered charitable trust — The Ossie James DC3 Conservation Trust, which has Ossie’s daughter Lynette as its chairperson. The trust was formed late last year and an inaugural launch function saw VIPs flown into Hamilton airport. Former pilots, who flew the aircraft, registered ZK-AZL, were on hand to entertain the VIP audience with tall tales of aviation adventures. At the function, presentations towards the cost of the project were made from Lotto Heritage, The Fieldays Society and the James Family totalling $77,000. A further donation has been received from the John Gallagher Trust for an additional $50,000. Trust Chair Lynette James says the project is expected to take 24 months to complete the first three stages which include repairing and repainting the aircraft. The ‘Highland Duster’ is suffering from the ravages of 37 years of exposure to weather and is in desperate need of some TLC. The first stage of the project is underway with the commissioning of Crater Lake Developments to build a roof up and over the aircraft to protect it from any further weather degradation.

Ossie James DC3 Conservation Trust Chairperson Lynette James turns the first sod on the project to conserve the ‘Highland Duster’ alongside Crater Lake Developments principal Brian Hermann
It means work on some of the structural repairs that need to be undertaken under cover can then start. This is work which can be done in preparation for Stage Two — repainting the plane next summer. The last phase will be to complete the education and interactive learning centre, where visitors will be able to view and learn about the impact of agricultural aviation on farming and the contribution aviation pioneers like Ossie made to that development. Once restoration work is complete the plane will be a proud part of the Agricultural Heritage Museum at Mystery Creek.

Black Beetle, Grass Grub, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all
vi s R En nes si As my old tutor used to ram into my head Bu “Plant predators and disease are symptom ms of a failing crop, not the cause”. It is natural to bbe healthy, not natural to be sick. We are brainwasheed into believing that headaches are a lack of aspirinn. We apply chemicals to fight predatory and weeed problems bl which hi h iis as foolish f li h as applying l i makeup k to t cover up pimples. It is about as foolish as smacking yourself over the head with a sledge hammer so that you don’t feel your toothache any more. Don’t blame the black beetle. Like all predators, they are opportunists. They attack when the opportunity is right. If the predator was at fault the whole system would have imploded when the very first one raised its head. They were put there to weed out the weak so that only the fit will survive. You never see the wolves in North America take on the big Bull Moose, they seek out the weak. The Lions in Africa take out the stragglers from the herd of wildebeest they just feed on the injured or sick; this is natures check and balance, it is how nature evolved. The soil is the plants rumen, end of story. Feed the plant via soil fertility and you will have a plant that can defend itself. Here in this country most of what we grow evolved from another hemisphere and in another environment. Therefore, in our acidic soils they will always have difficulty manufacturing their
full set of defences in the form of complete proteins unless we duplicate as near as possible those conditions it evolved in. When we put a man on the moon, he had to take his environment with him. The plant can’t do the same, so we must do it for him. When the plant cannot produce complete proteins they accumulate amide nitrogen compounds, crude sugars and incomplete bio-chemical products. These trigger in the predator, be that black beetle or whatever, that this plant is dying and it is just the place to lay its eggs. This cycle of events is termed the Calvin Cycle and is the cycle that converts crude sugars into starches. From starches the plant produces lignin, from lignin cellulose from cellulose to proteins, from proteins to fats, from fats oils and from oils alcohol is produced; on and on up the food chain. The higher up the food chain the harder it is to break down, that’s why you get pinged for drinking too much alcohol and never for too much pop. The lynch pin in the whole process is the atom of manganese. This is the element that splits the water molecule and kick starts off the whole cycle. When manganese is in short supply the cycle slows down; when this occurs sugars accumulate and become an invitation for predation. In nature there is always a cause and effect, don’t fight the predator, take the stress out of the host.
