Getting serious about wool

The government’s Woolshed Roadshow, which visited Taranaki and King Country last month at the start of a nationwide tour, is not just a well-defined and meticulously planned initiative but a beacon of hope for our economy.

It represents our best chance to restore wool as a significant export earner and contributor to New Zealand’s Gross National Product, paving the way for a brighter future.

The government has invested heavily in the roadshow, a three-month-long tour that covers the entire country, including key wool production areas, both big and small, from Northland to Southland. The participation of all three senior agriculture ministers, Todd McClay, Andrew Hoggard and Mark Patterson, underscores the importance of this programme.

contributing over 80 per cent of our goods exports. A robust and thriving agricultural sector is vital to the New Zealand economy.”

As the minister responsible for wool, Mark Patterson is working with farmers to rebuild a more robust and resilient wool industry. “It has been a challenging period for farmers, so we will interact with people from Northland to Southland, meeting in woolsheds to discuss grassroots solutions.”

Minister Hoggard said addressing unworkable and overly prescriptive regulations will enable farmers to focus on being the most efficient food and fibre producers globally.

The ministers’ unwavering commitment to engaging with the grassroots, actively listening to their concerns, and discussing practical solutions, is a testament to the government’s dedication to addressing the issues of sheep farmers and the agricultural sector.

Todd McClay said the wool sector makes a critically important contribution to the fabric of our rural and regional communities.

“New Zealand’s food and fibre sector is the backbone of our economy,

The good news for these ministers and our country is that wool is an incredibly resilient and agile industry. Despite economic and market pressures and fragmentation, our farmers and manufacturers retain the core ability, critical mass and technical skill to take wool in new directions and open untapped markets. The Woolshed Roadshow is the first step on the road to making it happen.

Fieldays goes state-of-the art

Four days of showcasing the national economic backbone with a massive social bonus for visiting crowds, both rural and urban, get underway from Wednesday, June 12 to Saturday, June 15 in the 56th year for Fieldays.

With 1,000 exhibitors, visitors can expect to see state-of-the-art farm machinery, cutting-edge technology, artisan food,

vehicles, financial and insurance products and services, and everything in between. Sample your way around local producers in the Fieldays Pantry, and wander through the Rural Living Precinct to discover a treasure trove of must-have gadgets and great deals.

The new Fieldays Rural Advocacy Hub, a collaboration with Federated Farmers, has reached seven suites. They showcase the strategic pillars that revolve around Education, Innovation and Globalisation, reflecting the importance of these themes in driving the food and fibre sector forward. The Fieldays Digital Futures, Forestry, Sustainability, Careers and Education, Hauora Taiwhenua Health and Wellbeing, and Innovation Hubs are a must-visit during the event.

The Fieldays App to identify exhibitors throughout the event is a pocket guide with a full list of exhibitors making it easier to plan and get around. Visitors are in the running to win a new utility vehicle with their ticket purchase. There’s a contest for the children, too, with a colouring competition online that will win the best picture a number of showtime goodies. Of course, there’s all the fun of the fair to keep everyone entertained.

Visitors can see the raw power and tenacity of the Fieldays Tractor Pull from a prime vantage point in the grandstand on the bank towards the river at Mystery Creek, as well as the fencing competition, also in full view for the three-day contest. The participants for the Innovation Awards have been announced across three categories. Sixty-four have made it to the next stage closer to a share of a total prize package of cash, services and products worth more than $70,000 to help launch or accelerate their new product.

“This year, we had the most entries we’ve had in the last 10 years,” says Fieldays programme manager Steve Chappell. “I’m really impressed with the ideas coming through this year, and I’m sure the visitors and investors will be too.” Entries ranged from something as modest in size as a wool plaster to something as large as an autonomous grapevine pruner, coming from Hamilton to as far away as Ireland.

“This year, we’re adding a special twist, a People’s Choice Award,” says Chappell. “The innovator with the most votes will take home a $2,000 cash prize from Fieldays, while one lucky voter will win a voucher for $500.”

The gates open Wednesday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and Saturday, 8am to 4pm. An adult one-day ticket costs $30, children 5 to 14 years, $15. A four-day adult pass is $100, and the family oneday pass costs $90.

“ICAREER OF A LIFETIME

was born and raised in Whakatāne and spent my first 24 years there. Later, I began travelling around towns in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato where I got involved with farming. I milked with some of my farmer friends,” said Michael.

“When I was growing up, my grandparents had a dry stock farm based just outside of Awakeri. We spent most of our weekends there with the cattle on their land.”

Michael says spending time on his grandparents’ farm gave him a better understanding of fencing, fixing troughs and farm maintenance and stock management, a wisdom that would serve him well in his farming journey.

“I pursued a farming career when my eldest son Tyler was born. I worked

at the Kawerau Mill and then moved on to a different career journey when the company reduced staff.”

Farming created more spark for Michael. He said it is much more enjoyable and varied than a nine-to-five job where most tasks are similar each day.

“Every day is different when you work on a farm, and I enjoy that. Many people get up and do their nine-to-five job and it is like being a robot, whereas, I would milk 10 months out of the year, but it is never the same.

“There is calving and mating, and everything else mixed into those 10 months. It could be a challenge, but sometimes it was relaxed.

“In my youth, I went too big, too fast, beginning with working on a 1,500 cowfarm. I burnt out quickly. After that, I

Michael Sharp, from a young age, experienced the rural lifestyle, cementing his move into a dairy career.

Michael grew up in Whakatāne and would spend time on his grandparents’ Awakeri dry stock farm

The 2013 drought put a halt to Michael’s plans. He began working for Chorus doing fibre installation before continuing his farming career in Huntly and then moved on to his current position at Morrinsville.

“I’m 2IC and have been on this current farm for the past five seasons. At peak season, I milk a 400-cow herd in a 36-aside herringbone dairy shed.

“I am based just north of Morrinsville on 250 hectares. The land runs on two sides of the road — one side is hilly on clay soil and the other side is on flat peat.

“I ensure the best milk quality is maintained by keeping on top of mastitis, so there is no grading.

“I also ensure lameness is kept to a minimum by keeping the yard clear of stones to prevent decreased milk production. With the payout fluctuating for the past few years, you want to make sure as much milk as possible is produced.”

In his spare time, Michael loves playing video games, and, before having children, he appreciated going fishing.

“Many of my children found growing up rurally enjoyable. It was a different experience than them being in town. Tyler enjoys being on the farm sometimes. Now that he’s of driving age, I give him driving lessons on the quad bike or the sideby-side.

“My youngest daughter Lilly hasn’t shown an interest in farming. I’ve tried to introduce her to the cows and the calves, although her playgroup came to the farm last year and adored it.

“For me, farming is a matter of convenience. I enjoy the free milk and love making milkshakes. My favourite one is chocolate, but sometimes I mix the flavours.

“Farming has changed throughout my life and so has the lifestyle. It is a necessity, rather than an interest now, because if you want anything you have to work for it.”

eeves Farms has been in the family for more than 90 years, and we’re the fourth generation caring for it,” says Ann.

“It’s great being here, we feel like we are custodians for the next generation to come on the farm, whether it is our children or someone else. It’s our job to leave the property in the best condition that we can.

“The farm is 605ha, with 550ha effective, running 2,000 breeding ewes, 800 ewe hoggets and 400 two-year-old bulls. We also provide sheep genetics to the wider industry.”

Ann grew up in Christchurch and met Alastair through his sister at netball.

“It took a bit of adjusting for me, with the nearest shop being 45 minutes away, coming from living in central Christchurch, but I love it here. We enjoy all aspects of farming and love the fact that we’re outside and accomplishing the things we strive to do.

Alastair and Ann Reeves are the fourth generation caring for the property, which has been in the family for more than 90 years

“Alastair gets a lot of intellectual stimulation from all the things he is involved with, including improving the environment and biodiversity, as well as enhancing the genetics of our stock.

Now, we’ve fenced off the steeper areas in our headwaters that were hard to farm. Farm management is easier, and the rewards are something we really enjoy.”

Alastair and Ann were named the Regional Supreme Waikato Ballance Farm Environmental Awards winners. They also won the Bayleys People in Primary Sector Award, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Farm Award, NZFET Biodiversity Award and NZFET Climate Recognition Award.

The couple has developed a highly-resilient farming business that is profitable while enhancing the surrounding environment.

“I think there’s a lot of farmers doing the same and we’re just representing them,” says Alastair.

“We have a deep understanding of land and animal classes. Our farming practices and stocking policies are tailored to maximise livestock performance while maintaining the environment.

“We have a predominantly Romney ewe flock with a Hampshire and Charollais cross terminal ram called a Charoblack, which we have bred and worked on for about five years with an emphasis on growth and meat quality.

“We’re focussing on early maturing lambs straight off mum before Christmas, so we can cope when we get dry as we do here.

“With our meat, we’re focussing on taste quality, and invest a lot of time, effort and money looking at marbling. They have been in trials in Hawke’s Bay and the South Island with Charoblack genetics marbling very well.

“Marble scoring in beef has led the way in terms of consistency of product and taste experience. Once, you could have two of the same animals side by side, and they would taste differently. The question was why? Marble scoring has helped and proven if your animal has high marbling — you’re going to have a sensationaltasting product.

“A lower score means less marbling, and it won’t be as good. We now have probes in the freezing works, and if it’s marbled, the carcass goes one way, and if not, it goes another.

“Extensive fencing has taken place, and we’ve planted riparian corridors, while actively managing predators and collaborating with

the wider community to control possums across a total of 155,000ha, connecting strongly to those around us.

“With our plantings, we understand our property’s strengths and ensure the right tree is planted in the right place. There is a mix of native and exotic trees, including pines and poplars, with significant planting at the main catchment’s headwaters.

“We actively work alongside others in the sheep and beef industry and empower our peers through the sharing of knowledge. This includes helping to set up and chair the West Waikato Coastal Community Catchment Group.

“We’re focussing on improving the farm for future generations, and our

business is successfully providing an income for our family. We believe in showing leadership in response to climate change initiatives, and take risks, learning from our successes and failures.

“We stand by the mantra that every day could be an open day for clients, and we like to ensure that our property is presented as such. At our annual ram sale on the first Thursday in November we always auction a ram for the Rural Support Trust because we feel it’s important to support the work they do.

“Farmers being proud of what they do, and the amazing product they produce definitely helps our community wellness.”

“Working in your own business is fulfilling as we know there’s potential,” says Michaela.

Mamaku Blue recently received bronze awards for the 250ml Pure 100% Blueberry Juice and the 250ml Pure 100% Gooseberry Juice at the recent NZ Life & Leisure Outstanding Food Producers Awards — Label & Litho Drink Medal.

“Phillip grew up on the farm helping his folks and then travelled for a few years before returning home. He decided to carry on from Harry with the blueberries and try to change and shape the business,

so it can sustain the future. That takes a lot of courage.

“I came on board in 2012 as a working holiday worker, never left and never looked back. We just love what we do and, hopefully, one day our kids will see their future in it, too. It’s still a challenge to be in this part of the industry, but it’d be wonderful if the next generation carry on the business.

“With growing expenses, we’ve had to ensure our business has a future, if there will be any chance for our children to be interested in taking it over. The majority of our permanent staff at our Mamaku Blue

“We continually work on improvement, and create something new and beneficial. Recent trials and testing show our blueberry powder has a very high concentration of antioxidants.

“For our Mamaku Blue blueberry juice, we only use A-grade berries, so we have the top-quality pleasant-tasting product. We’ve received amazing customer feedback saying people with kidney problems have had positive results. A lot of reviews are mind-blowing.

“People say that our juice can help with many things, not just kidneys. Diabetics find it doesn’t spike their sugar levels. Others say it has helped them from going

to dialysis, and some drink it to avoid colds and coughs and for better illness recovery. That makes what we do worthwhile.

“Customers reported that after trailing different brands, from different countries, other juices didn’t work the same as Mamaku Blue. It definitely warms our hearts to receive such feedback. That’s our major factor to keep doing what we’re doing, even though we’ve had many challenges to overcome and battle.

Backing food charity

With more than 45,000 meal donations, New Zealand-owned and operated farming company Craigmore Sustainables is playing its part to fill food banks and community organisations nationwide.

For the last three years, through farmer-led charity Meat the Need and Feed Out, Craigmore has donated more than 45,000 mince and milk meals.

Meat the Need and Feed Out facilitate donations of meat and milk from farmers as well as donations of cash to turn into meals and supply more than 110 food banks and community organisations nationwide.

Managing more than 25,000 hectares of dairy, grazing, forestry and horticultural properties across New Zealand, Craigmore is passionate about giving back to its communities and working with support agencies to provide help where it’s needed most.

Engaging in rural communities is a key pillar of Craigmore’s strategy, with the business investing in local initiatives and encouraging its farmers to develop

programmes for their teams and get involved with their communities.

“One of the advantages of farming is the availability of and access to highquality meat and milk products,” says

Craigmore general manager — farming Stuart Taylor.

“For us, being able to donate to Meat the Need and offer support to a charity that is working with people who are struggling in our towns and cities, is just amazing.

“As the only charity in New Zealand that donates a consistent and regular supply of mince and milk to food banks, giving to Meat the Need is an effective and transparent way for farmers to connect with the rest of the country, give back and make a difference.

“Farmers who have the benefit of scale, such as Craigmore, have a responsibility to go the extra mile because we can share a little bit from lots of farms to make a real difference. We should be standing up and providing more — because we can.”

Stuart understands that farms help to look after communities, and he aspires to do all he can to support people on-farm and the communities around him.

“We’d love to see other larger farming entities jump on board with Meat the Need and support them into the future because it’s such a great charity to be part of, and they are making a real difference to food insecurity in New Zealand.”

Meat the Need and Feed Out general manager Zellara Holden said Craigmore’s generous contribution has given tens of thousands of people facing food insecurity a helping hand.

“To provide one meal to a community need makes a difference, but to be able to give 45,000 mince and milk meals is changing the face of food insecurity in New Zealand, and for that we are incredibly thankful,” she said.

Donations of milk, livestock and funds can be made online at meattheneed.org.

Sam Neill joins flock

A Hunt for the Woolderpeople has turned up trumps with New Zealand actor Sir Sam Neill joining the Campaign for Wool NZ as an ambassador.

Sam, a fourth-generation New Zealander, is one of the country’s most highly regarded actors. He has worked across the globe in film and television. He’s lending his name and considerable profile to educate and advocate for the super fibre that is New Zealand strong wool.

In his role with CFWNZ, a registered charity funded by wool growers through a voluntary per-kilogram contribution and several commercial partners, Sam will assist in creating visual content that drives home the message that New Zealandgrown strong wool is natural, comfortable, moisture-wicking and eco-friendly.

“I spent a lot of time working in woolsheds as a young fellow and they were some of the best days of my life,” says Sam. “There are very few experiences you can have that are more New Zealand by nature.”

Sam has won countless awards for his decades-long career, starred in more than 150 films, documentaries and television shows, and was knighted in 2022. Behind the scenes, he is an enthusiastic wool advocate and shares his farm in the Central Otago region with sheep, cattle, pigs, ducks, chickens and, of course, grapevines.

His wine brand, Two Paddocks, crafts premium organic Pinot Noir and he has long felt connected to strong wool and its benefits.

“Today, I’m a Suffolk sheep owner and my sheep produce strong wool. Every time we shear, I’m reminded about what a great product it is — durable, warm, sustainable and biodegradable, but somehow undervalued and it comes from happy sheep. There is nothing like it.”

CFWNZ’s general manager, Kara Biggs, says the alliance is perfect and the charity can’t wait to work more directly with the Jurassic Park star.

“Speaking with Sam, his passion and vision for New Zealand strong wool couldn’t be more clear. Sam understands wool. He’s already a huge advocate for wool, and genuine in his quest to share

its myriad beneficial qualities with his audience.

“We’re so grateful to Sam for making time for Campaign for Wool and helping us share the message that New Zealand strong wool is magic!”

The ambassadorship begins immediately with Sir Sam joining three other ambassadors; fashion and textile designer Liz Mitchell MNZM, architect Stephen McDougall and commercial interiors specialist Robert Macfarlane at CFWNZ.

“I am very happy to be associated with, and a grower of, one of the world’s best products,” says Sam.

Winter maintenance — stop rust with lanolin

Now, Prolan has just launched a new product called Prolan Extreme that it was due to promote at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek.

Prolan director Murray Shaw says this product is the Rolls Royce of the lanolin products. “Not only is it environmentallyfriendly, it leaves a clean waxy coating and provides longer rust protection.

“Prolan Extreme is attracting much interest for those with machinery and equipment exposed to harsh environments, such as salt, sand and mud,” says Murray.

“The results are excellent. We’ve trialled it within industries throughout NZ from mussel spat farmers to Great Barrier Island engineers.”

Prolan manufactures several different grades of Prolan to suit varying needs. A coating of Prolan Lanolin Enduro Heavy Grade on a vehicle chassis will provide a long-term, environmentally friendly protective coating that will help it pass WOF and COF checks.

“Many vehicle stations are now recommending a coating of Prolan to cover existing rust and seal it off from air and moisture. Prolan cannot be removed by cold-water blasting — this allows

Prolan manufactures several different grades of its products, which protect vehicle chassis and farm machinery from corrosion

vehicle chassis to be cleaned without removing the rust protection.”

Prolan Enduro Medium Grade is excellent as a general workshop lubricant and corrosion inhibitor for coating quadbikes and farm machinery.

“Many farmers find Prolan so versatile as a general workshop lubricant they use it to sort out seized

STOP RUST

locks, bolts, chains and squeaky door hinges.

“Also, as an environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor, you can spray it over existing rust on machinery or coat a quadbike or farm mule to prevent the chassis from rusting out.”

As a result, Prolan saves time on maintenance and component

replacement and long-term will increase machinery life and resale value.

“It is hard to believe it is off the sheep’s back — taken from nature to protect nature! With the added bonus, it is made in NZ by Kiwis,” Murray said.

Ag Leader delivers hands-free turning

Precision agriculture technology specialist, Ag Leader, has introduced a fully automated end-of-row turning

guidance and steering systems.

The aptly named TurnPath™ function provides precise and repeatable end-ofrow turning from either straight or curved guidance patterns. Passes can be easily skipped if desired.

Ag Leader sales manager — Asia Pacific, Douglas Amos, says the new function optimises turning accuracy and efficiency.

“Every farmer in Australia can relate to the frustration of turning machinery and large implements around at headlands,” he says.

“You have to disengage the autosteer system, take back the steering wheel, shut down and disengage the implement, make the turn, line up the next pass and then re-engage the implement.

“You just about need two sets of hands to manage everything. TurnPath makes the turn ‘hands-free’, so the operator can focus on other tasks.”

Douglas says the technology has been successfully tested on more than 60 different machines across four continents.

“Ag Leader’s goal has always been to make farming easier and TurnPath is a good example of that,” he says.

“It’s easy to set up, it’s easy to use, it performs consistently and it works seamlessly across your entire fleet.”

TurnPath is available as a one-time unlock option through the InCommand®

display. A free demonstration is available.

To take advantage of TurnPath, the machine must be equipped with a SteerCommand® Z2 or SteadySteer® system in combination with an InCommand® 1200 or 800 display.

Any correction source can be used, although the best results are achieved with TerraStar-C Pro or RTK.

“SteerCommand Z2 is a completely integrated guidance system that utilises CAN, integrated steering or external hydraulic valves, while SteadySteer is an assisted system

Dairy ef uent specialists

Building their business from the ground up, Paul and Brenda Smith started Waikato Dairy Effluent Services Ltd in Morrinsville in August 2019, riding on Paul’s expertise and reputation after working for HiTech Enviro Solutions.

“Paul was the workshop and production manager for HiTech Enviro Solutions and moved on to a consulting role for Waikato Milking Systems, helping the New Zealand dealer network with their effluent queries when they brought out HiTech Enviro Solutions,” says Brenda.

“We both come from farming backgrounds and when we started our business we wanted to use proven effl uent equipment, such as DODA pumps, and service what we sell.

“On November 1, we moved from our small workshop behind VTNZ to 11 Anderson Street, Morrinsville, into the old Auto Super Shoppe Morrinsville building. We became the new owners of the Waikato Milking Systems Effluent & Environmental business on November 15.”

The warehouse houses a host of parts, including hydrants, effluent parts, Doda pumps, stirrers and parts, complementing the servicing business.

“We work well with our dealer network across New Zealand and are

the only supplier/importer of Doda parts in New Zealand. Our servicing workshop services ALL make and models of effluent pumps, stirrers and irrigators, and includes on-farm accredited effluent systems and installations.”

Paul has more than 20 years of industry experience specialising in Doda and the Cobra Irrigator. Paul was part of the team that built the Cobra Irrigator, which has since been sold to Numedic.

“It has been very exciting for us, our farming community and our dealer network. Our farmers still have access to all of Paul’s excellent servicing work and experience, and we continue to provide quality service with our large range of Doda and effluent parts on hand for the servicing and installation jobs.

“Our New Zealand dealer network has direct access to Paul’s knowledge of the Doda brand, knowing that the brand will remain in New Zealand. It’s just as exciting to have it back in Morrinsville where it all began with HiTech Enviro Solutions.”

THE JOY OF COWS

Having spent his life around cattle, and with a deep concern for their welfare, author Angus St John Galloway is honouring his much-loved bovine friends through his book, Moo.

“I grew up on farms in rural Devon, in the United Kingdom, and in those days, before farming became corporatised, people had a few cows, but rural Devon didn’t have great fencing back then and we’d often see them out on the road.”

Angus loves animals. Moo adds to a series of published adult picture books celebrating them under the

REWIRING SPECIALISTS

Animal Happiness series with Exisle Publishing.

“With farmers having become more sensitive about animal welfare, we thought we’d produce Moo, celebrating how the world has got better with how they deal with animals.

“Exisle Publishing is an independent traditional publishing company, and, years ago, we produced our first adult animal picture books called Meow and Woof starting our series with simple pictures and quotes.

“The books are about the joys of animals, including Spirit, which is about horses, Cluck for chickens, Oink for pigs and Buzz for bees. They’re very good fun, and every critter has its own enthusiast.

“The vastly increasing intolerance for any maltreatment of cows and the thousands of rescue organisations inspired me to produce a joyful pictorial celebration of the world’s billion cows.

“New Zealand has been my home for around 30 years but the most interesting place I’ve seen cows was in New Delhi where they’re revered. You can’t harm

“One very urban girl asked me recently if all cows are girls. I smiled, and was very polite in my answer, but thought — she needs to spend a little more time in the country.

“Post-Covid we’ve noticed the small farm thing is coming back, with people setting up with a few cattle here and there. People love seeing cows in the countryside, the days of them only being a source of meat are long gone.

“Many people don’t realise that these gentle creatures are uniquely inquisitive and affectionate. They’re friendly and curious about humans as well — they want to know what’s going on. They’re terrific mothers, and if you watch them carefully, you notice their playfulness.

“The book is full of quotes that I’ve sourced from around the world. Some are jokes about human and bovine characteristics being the same. One picture is of a dangerous-looking bull and the Ronald Regan quote says ‘Trust, but verify’.

“From Thomas de Quincey to Mary Quant, cows have fascinated writers,

philosophers, fashion designers, film stars and musicians for centuries. They’re hugely sociable creatures, with several strange habits, such as spending up to eight hours a day chewing.

“Moo opens your eyes to their immense variety, joyfulness and surprising tenderness. With photos of around 50 of the world’s most popular cattle breeds, it’s the perfect gift for anyone from bovine experts to folks who find cows cute.”

The publication date for Moo is set for June 19. It is available from exislepublishing.com and wherever good books are sold.

“New Zealand farming techniques aren’t as bad as some would like people to believe. Kiwi farmers are frankly pretty on to it. Often when people are around their cows, they relax.

“We believe if you know your flock individually, which a good farmer will, you’re in touch with your animals. We celebrate animals and constantly explore the human-to-animal relationship.

“They have the ability to travel and walk a fair distance at a time. Fundamentally, we’re very urbanised, and think we should be aware of that. We wouldn’t exist without cows.

“In my childhood, there were particular friendly Highland cattle cows that were naughty little fellas. They always crossed over into our little garden and had a good time with the fruit trees. They would always look at each other as if saying ‘What’s he doing now?’

“They were a part of life and they are very much valued by the farmers who could make a living out of 20 to 30 cattle. It wasn’t a grand living, and they were nearly always named after flowers. To me, animals are born as they are, they accept it and live with a greater peace than people do.”

We have a copy of Moo to give to one lucky reader. To be in to win, email comp@integrity.nz and tell us if all cows are girls by Friday, June 14.

Too many farmers fixated on phosphate

That is the view of Avoca Director Bryce Manderson. He says applying phosphate on-farm is a waste if it remains unavailable due to low pH levels.

“I think phospate is being applied either because it has become traditional practice stemming from the early days of farming in New Zealand when P was deficient, or because farmers are being given poor soil fertility advice,” says Manderson.

The application of very expensive phosphate should be questioned, especially in a time of tough economic conditions, he says.

“The Olsen P test, which indicates plant available phosphate, may be low due to the unavailability of P at low soil pHs. This test should be combined with a total P and pH test to show whether there is enough P that can be released by liming at a much lower cost than applying more P unnecessarily.”

Manderson says if soils are too acidic, usually less than pH 6, phosphorus can lock up with iron and aluminium compounds, reducing its availability to plants.

“That is why liming is important to improve and maintain soils at pH 6.3–6.5, so lock-up mechanisms and elemental toxicities are minimal and plant availability of phosphorus is maximised.

“Applying lime to increase pH and subsequent phosphorous availability is known as a phosphate-sparing effect, which can happen in different ways. When pH increases the presence of aluminium and iron compounds lowers, which reduces lock up of new phosphorus additions like phosphate itself.

“What many people do not realise is that lime increases the mineralisation of

organic nitrogen in soil, which boosts plant growth. That allows their roots to utilise a bigger volume of aluminium and iron-bound phosphorus that is already there naturally or from previous phosphorus applications.”

Manderson notes that through an onfarm trial, a phosphate sparing effect has been observed in Northland, which was equivalent to 50–60kg of phosphorus a hectare (560–670kg of super phosphate a hectare) consistent over three years after five tonnes of lime a hectare was applied to a pH 5.8 soil.

“I would happily speak to any farmers who want to learn more about the benefits of lime, so they can better understand how lime can boost their soil health and release nutrients to increase productivity,” Manderson said.

“As I have said before, lime clearly increases the availability of really valuable plant nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium, along with trace elements like boron and molybdenum.”

Manderson’s father Jim established Avoca in Northland 75 years ago. Through significant growth, the company is now a leading provider of lime and fertiliser mixes throughout Northland, South Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

reasons to apply lime to your soils:

1

2

3

4

Increases nutrient availability; raising soil pH with lime to ~6.3-6.5 releases and balances soil nutrients for plant uptake, maximising return on your fertiliser spend.

Improves pasture yield. Trials have shown pasture production increases up to 68% and corresponding live weight gains.

Reduces need for N-fertiliser; lime stimulates N-fixation by legumes, and N-release from organic matter into plant available forms.

Improves P availability through a ‘phosphate sparing effect’ - trials in Northland showed 50-60kg more P available consistent over 3 years after applying 5t/ha of lime to a pH 5.8 soil. Optimal P availability occurs when soils are limes to pH 6.3-6.5.

Improves pasture palatability allowing for more even grazing of pasture and better pasture utilisation. 5

6

7

8

9

10

Increases soil biological activity and diversity; key to nutrient availability, good soil structure & porosity, and ultimately pasture/crop yield.

Increases resilience to droughts, floods, and runoff/erosion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and greater root penetration for pasture/crop growth by flocculating (loosening) your soil to improve soil structure and porosity.

Increases water holding capacity in the dry and water drainage in the wet. Lime drives down magnesium in ‘tight, high Mg’ soils such as estuarine soils found in the Hauraki Plains.

Reduces elemental toxicities evident at low pH levels, e.g. Al, preventing subsoil acidification and improving root growth, root development, and reduces P-fixation.

Provides calcium which is essential for both plant and animal growth and health.

Raising the bar

The Dairy Women’s Network is celebrating herd health veterinarian Katrina Roberts — this year’s Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year.

Based in Waikato, Katrina is a herd health veterinarian for Anexa Veterinary Services. Recognised for her outstanding passion and advocacy for the dairy industry, DWN trustee Donna Smit says Katrina has raised the bar for the industry and personifies enthusiasm and the values of the Dairy Women’s Network.

“We are thrilled to award Katrina the 2024 Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year,” says Donna.

“Her commitment and passion to helping farmers and advocate for her industry and her team is outstanding. Her research and development has changed the way many farmers operate their business for the betterment of the whole industry.

“She has already achieved so much in a short space of time and will continue to add huge value to the agriculture industry in governance, advocacy and leadership well into the future.”

For the past 20 years, Katrina has provided farm consultancy and has been involved in the redevelopment of many DairyNZ programmes, including InCalf, FeedRight and body condition score accreditation. Her expertise is often called upon by farmers and vets across the country in both a research

and project management role and keynote speaking.

“Katrina was one of four finalists, who were all exemplary in their own right. Our judges had their work cut for them this year as we had such a large number of high-calibre entries.

“The other finalists, Myfanwy Alexander, Amber Carpenter and Michelle Ruddell are amazing women who bring a huge amount of passion, knowledge and leadership to the sector and embody our conference theme: Enhance, Elevate, Evolve. We are fortunate to have women of their calibre working in the dairy industry.”

Fonterra CEO Miles Hurrell says the cooperative is proud to have sponsored the award since its inception.

“It’s important to shine a light on women who are making outstanding contributions to the dairy industry and helping pave the way for the next generation to succeed.

“Katrina achieved so much in a short space of time and will continue to add huge value to the industry.”

“We’re honoured to play a part in that by sponsoring this award and supporting the Dairy Women’s Network in the work they’re doing across the country.

“Katrina has worked closely with many of Fonterra’s On-Farm Excellence team who describe her as a tireless advocate for farmers, holding our industry to high, evidence-based standards and offering practical solutions that deliver real value on-farm.

“Through her impressive list of achievements, it’s clear to see how passionate she is about animal wellbeing and building a better future for farmers, her fellow vets and the dairy industry as a whole.”

The Regional Leader of the Year was Eastern Bay of Plenty dairy farmer Rebecca O’Brien.

Board builds depth

As part of the DairyNZ Strategy review process, the board has included its

practices, with the aim of strengthening the governance framework of

good organisation.

“The review process ensured governance best practice, depth of leadership and pathways to grow capability for directors,” said DairyNZ Chair Jim van der Poel.

As a first part of the process, the board has established a deputy chair position and chosen farmer-elected director Professor Jacqueline Rowarth for the role.

“Professor Rowarth will provide key additional support in the area of stakeholder engagement, which has evolved and expanded over recent times, says Mr van der Poel.

“We have seen the time demands on the chair role grow as we have been called on to work constructively across the sector. One of DairyNZ’s key roles is to put forward evidence-based solutions that work for our farmers and rural communities and help us move dairy farming into the future.

“This deputy role will help support our board’s work with our sector, industry and science partners, and with local and central governments to fulfil that commitment.”

Mr van der Poel says board leadership and effective governance are critical to ensure DairyNZ is fit for the long-term as an organisation.

“This deputy role will help support our board’s work with our sector, industry and science partners, and with local and central governments to fulfil that commitment.”

“We are setting the board up to deliver our new strategy. Sharing the load, building capability and depth is important for good governance.

“As a board, we felt it was important to have a nominated deputy chairperson to represent DairyNZ at a governance level on issues that matter to our levypaying dairy farmers. It’s a key role to support the effort we are putting into ensuring we have a thriving dairy sector for our farmers.”

Grower blooms with success

Innovation and diversification saw Peter Rensen of Utopia Nurseries Pukekohe take the

at this year’s Auckland Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

His 18ha (8ha effective) Pukekohe nursery produces orchids, chrysanthemums, ruscus greenery, and miscanthus, which is grown and processed for potentially heating greenhouses in the future.

“Extensive riparian planting has been carried out since the early 2000s, with the property now boasting more than four hectares of native bush,” says a BFEA spokesperson.

“This includes the Raupō wetlands, which are one of the few habitats of this type remaining in the region. As well as enhancing the natural environment, the native planting reduces soil run-off and ensures excess water from the glasshouses is filtered before entering streams.”

The focus on freshwater extends to future planning, with new irrigation ponds installed to ensure that any future expansion is not reliant on external water sources.

“Biodiversity is further boosted with comprehensive monitoring systems in place for pest control and actively managing predators. The team is reducing the use of chemical sprays, by using natural nematodes to control butterflies, thrips and other insects, and fungi.

“Lavender has been planted to attract bees on to the property and its glasshouses. Regular soil testing is completed with cropspecific recommendations implemented, resulting in healthy plants.

“Innovation is also a prominent theme. For example, a railing system has been installed to transport cut orchid stems from the glasshouses to the packhouse with minimal handling.”

The judges were impressed with Peter’s knowledge and passion to innovate and grow the business.

“There is a big focus on continuous improvement, automation and mechanisation to improve efficiency and health and safety outcomes in the operation. The judges identified innovation and diversification as key ingredients in the success of Utopia Orchids.

“They also noted that Peter has a real passion and commitment to improving the property and leaving the land in better shape than he found it, ready to hand on to sons Mich and Tim. Peter also won the Hill Labs AgriScience Award, Rabobank Agri-Business

Management Award and the NZFET Innovation Award.”

The Ballance Farm Environment Awards are run by the NZ Farm Environment Trust and champion sustainable farming and growing. They also showcase Kaipara Moana Remediation, a programme that aims to halve sediment flows into the environmentally, culturally and economically significant Kaipara Moana,

although its projects generate much wider benefits.

Since forming in 2020, Kaipara Moana Remediation has facilitated the planting of about 1.4 million native plants across more than 300ha, and the installation of almost 600km of fencing. They’ve engaged with half of the catchment’s pastoral landowners to create almost 550 sediment reduction plans covering a significant 100,000ha.

Rural security solutions with Smartway

“With the even higher prices of fuel now there has been a spike in the number of rural properties experiencing thefts from tanks,” says Smartway Security Services’ managing director Roger Bull.

“Luckily, there are also a growing number of technology applications that can help prevent it.”

Rural properties are fast becoming the main target for criminals, especially when the majority of farms have their own fuel tanks to service their onfarm vehicles.

Smartway Security has been operating for more than 22 years. Its clients and services range from large international corporations to farms and businesses; home alarms are also monitored, along with CCTV and other security products.

The company has also installed CCTV in a nationwide chain of tyre stores with more than 100 branches, mainly for health and safety purposes.

A major growth area has been identified for on-farm security. Smartway has developed several methods for protecting farms, such as:

• Security alarm and 24/7 monitoring

• Fuel tank alert systems that will notify the farmhouse when someone is in the vicinity of, or obtaining, at the fuel tanks. In addition, they can add a module that sends a text message to the farmer when the hose is activated as an additional alert

• Our wireless gate beams are solarpowered, so no local power is necessary; these report back to a base station in the farmhouse, which can be up to 800m away (line of sight), when connected with a CCTV system they can also send an email alert

• CCTV cameras that can read a number plate regardless of headlights or spotlights on a vehicle and cameras that ‘see in the dark’ and can revolve around the yard to cover implement sheds, etc

• On-farm wireless communication networks

“We have had a lot of success with these systems, which give the rural owners peace of mind that they will be alerted when there is a problem,” Roger said.

Whether for health and safety, security or staff training, a good CCTV system is cost-effective and will save money in the long term. If you are interested in having one installed at your premises, contact us today for a free demo of our state-ofthe-art systems.

Healthier water with ozonation

A Tankozone® system will continuously treat, condition and filter the entire contents of your tank water using ozone — an effective, economical and proven technology.

Ozonation has been used to treat drinking water in Europe, since the early 1900s and in North America for the past three decades. In New Zealand Timaru, Whanganui, Oamaru and Takapau are leading the way in ozone water treatment.

Whatever the source of the tank water, bore (groundwater), stream, spring, well or dam often contains contaminants. These come in the form of spray drift from agricultural activities, contaminants from birds, possums, rodents and tannins from decaying organic matter. Coliform bacteria will be eliminated, as well as fungus, mould and yeast spores. Contaminants, such as hydrogen sulphide, excess iron, manganese and other metals will also be successfully reduced and eliminated.

The washable Tankozone® filter acts as a pre-filter to any existing household filter, significantly reducing the frequency and cost of filter replacements.

Commercial growers use ozonated water to produce an elevated dissolved oxygen level in their irrigation water to improve a plant’s overall health. Dissolved oxygen leads to increased nutrient uptake and conversion efficiency,

enhancing the growth and development of roots, vegetative and flowering characteristics reducing fertiliser use. Fruit and vegetables rinsed with ozonated water are much healthier to consume, stay fresher and last longer.

system consists of two components: an ozone generator air pump and a diffuser within a washable filter. It treats 50,000 litres of water as it passes through the filter in a 24-hour period removing oxidised particulates, capturing

existing debris and preventing them from accumulating on the bottom of the tank. For more information, contact Pierre de Villiers at Holistic Farm Solutions on 021 169 3922 or email herd.feed@ gmail.com.

A story of success and royal visitors

Far from its extensive nationally recognised venue at Mystery Creek today, the first-ever Fieldays event was staged at the Te Rapa Racecourse in 1969, with a budget of just $10,500 after Waikato farmer, John Kneebone, suggested an annual outing.

His proposal gathered huge support, and 18,000 people attended the first Fieldays, held over two days. The first day attracted 12,000 visitors, far exceeding the 3,000 expected.

However, the inaugural gathering was marred when a pilot was injured — his plane crashed during a flying demonstration. Records describe that a brilliant last-ditch effort by the pilot prevented the plane from landing in the crowd.

Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne attended the second Fieldays in 1970. The event was rescheduled to March to accommodate the royal tour.

Then, in a red-letter year, Fieldays moved to its forever home at Mystery Creek in 1971. According to Fieldays lore, the only assets the organising group had to offer the ANZ bank to secure a loan were rolls of copper wire and power poles left over from the Te Rapa event.

Over the years, visitor numbers have grown to 50,000 (1979), 78,000 (1984), 131,000 (2008) and a record 133,588 in 2017. Exhibitor numbers have grown from roughly 80 in 1969 to 191 (1974), 300 (1978) and 1,059 across 1,400 sites in 2018.

A huge $492 million in sales revenue was generated for New Zealand firms off the back of the 2018 Fieldays, with an impressive $168 million generated for businesses in the Waikato region alone.

There is a notable flow-on into the local, regional and, indeed, national economy from an iconic rural showcase. A University of Waikato report has estimated the total revenue contribution of Fieldays for the New Zealand economy in its first 49 years at $18

1980, a Fieldays

billion in 2018’s economic value with the GDP contribution estimated at $8 billion.

In fact, Fieldays is responsible for providing more than 2,000 full-year jobs, both full and part-time.

More than $1 million in cash was withdrawn on the site during the four days in 2017, and, in Hamilton, hotel rooms are fully booked approximately six months in advance. Products that last

Gary and Glennis Wilson of Wilco Engineering are farmers who understand the importance of quality products that are practical and robust.

“We formed Wilco Engineering in 2003, and strive to build products that last a lifetime on the farm,” says Glennis.

“We centred our work around maintenance at the local pulp and paper mills where we had been involved for 20 years, as well as general engineering for the local farming community.

“Through working with the community and being farmers ourselves, we saw a need for quality products, practical, efficient and robust enough to stand up to daily rigours in all conditions.

“We continued developing and growing our range of products and, 20 years later, we can proudly say that we have a range that makes life easier on the farm.”

Located on the edge of the Rangitaiki Plains in the Whakatane District, Wilco’s speciality hay/meal feeders, static large bale feeders and trailers are now spread around New Zealand, from Ranfurly in the south, through to Kaitaia in the Far North.

“Wilco Engineering feeders and trailers are designed for everyday farm use or transporting and are the ideal solution due to their strength and durability. Our philosophy is: ‘We combine our good ideas with yours because you know what works for you’.

“Made in New Zealand our frames are highly robust and fully galvanised to ensure the best quality and performance. We 100 per cent stand by everything we manufacture, with our products being well-known for quality and longevity.

“Time and time again New Zealand farmers tell us that they’re frustrated with the amount of feed which goes to waste, so we designed our user-friendly hay and meal feeders to protect feed from the elements and ensure minimal feed

wastage. They’re easy to move to reduce pugging, saving our customers valuable time, and, therefore, money.

“Whether you have a dairy unit, lifestyle block, alpacas, goats, sheep, or horses, we have a feeder size that will make your life easier, so you can feed your stock without having to check on them as often.

“Our feeders come as hanging, skid, or two or three wheeled mobile hay racks with optional meal bins sized from one bale to four capacity. Contact us

to find out how we can help you save time and minimise waste with a fully galvanised New Zealand product that will last for years.

“If you’re in need of a trailer for everyday use on the farm or lifestyle block, check out our range of trailers. Made from steel with highly robust frames and galvanised to ensure strength and dependability.

“Visit us at Site F20 at the Fieldays. We have held our prices from last year to help our customers the best we can.”

Innovative Design Improves Efficiency

Recharge battery additive for maximum performance

“Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated. Sulphation reduces charge holding capacity and corrodes internal lead plates, resulting in premature battery failure,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive.

“It was very nice to get a call from Rick Ashley in Kati Kati who said, and I quote: ‘Having owned and operated garages for the last 40 years, I believe I know a good product when I use one. I have used Recharge in batteries on many occasions with impressive results. From bringing them back to life and as periodic cleansing every two years. My own vehicle has the original battery still going strong to this day at 19 years. This has been verified by two battery dealers. Recharge is an awesome product.’ Rick Ashley, RJ Automotive, Kati Kati, Bay of Plenty.

“Lead-acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up. A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi. “It is a simple formula. Treat batteries early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged. The earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer they will go.”

Gerard and Debbie will be at the National Field Days again this year at site D-122 as usual, or you can purchase the two-litre online for $360. It is far cheaper at the Fieldays, however, at $295 as there is no DG freight, so see us there. However, we are offering a Fieldays special on freight for the twolitre. We will deliver a two-litre to your nearest service centre for $330 — conditions apply.

The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so it’s about $7 to treat an N-70zz. Please visit our website recharge.net.nz for more information. Recharge is also available at some Farmlands stores but, unfortunately, not all — due to freight costs.

Yes, you can treat sealed batteries by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with polyurethane windscreen sealant, is best. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries.

A game changer in fencing

Since their introduction 20 years ago in

Engineered to be both bulletproof and weatherproof, these award-winning fence posts offer strength and long life. Key features of WoodShield fence posts

Bulletproof protection: WoodShield fence posts are made from chemicalfree timber fully encased in recycled plastic. The poly adds approximately 40% additional strength to the timber core, ensuring they can withstand highimpact forces and be rammed/knocked into the ground.

Weatherproof performance: Unlike traditional wooden posts that succumb to rot, warping and decay, WoodShield fence posts are sealed to the elements. They resist moisture, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations, maintaining their structural integrity in all weather conditions. NO BENDING.

Pest resistant: One of the significant advantages of WoodShield fence posts is resistance to pests. Traditional wood posts are vulnerable to termites and other wood-eating insects, but WoodShield’s outer casing ensures the fence posts remain intact and undamaged over time.

Circular economy contribution: WoodShield fence posts are not only built to last but are also environmentally friendly. They are made from recycled poly and sustainable timber, contributing to a circular economy — reducing and saving waste going to the landfill.

Benefits for consumers and the environment

Cost-effective: WoodShield fence posts’ long lifespan means fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs over time, offering excellent value for money.

Sustainable Choice: By using recycled materials and promoting durability, WoodShield fence posts help reduce the environmental footprint associated with fencing products. The production and lifecycle, support sustainable practices and resource conservation.

Aesthetic appeal: WoodShield fence posts maintain the abilities of wooden posts while offering advanced technological benefits. They blend seamlessly into various landscapes, providing both functionality and visual appeal. NO PAINTING REQUIRED.

A game changer in the fencing industry, providing a reliable, ecofriendly, and cost-effective solution. Bulletproof, weatherproof and pestresistant properties ensure they remain the best choice for those seeking longlasting fencing options. Rural Women business awards

Rural Women New Zealand and premier partner NZI have launched this year’s NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards.

“This year’s awards will reflect the increasing diversity in the enterprises that women own and operate in rural and regional Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Rural Women New Zealand national president Gill Naylor.

“Following a review, we have revised some of our award categories to embrace specific sectors that have seen phenomenal growth in recent years. In particular, our judges have noted a significant increase in businesses that provide unique experiences, accommodation and hospitality in amazing rural locations.

“Another key trend is the growth of businesses producing and selling incredible products from rural locations. Our NZI Supreme Award winner in 2023, Sophie Hurley of Honest Wolf in Hunterville, is a testament to the fact that living rurally needs no longer be an impediment to creating and building a hugely successful business.

“RWNZ is delighted that our premier partner, NZI, which shares RWNZ’s goals to strengthen, support and connect people and communities, will be joining us on the awards journey again this year.”

NZI’s executive manager Agencies and Schemes, Christina Chellew, says they are

delighted to support the NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards as a premier partner and to recognise and promote innovative rural women in business.

“Every year, judges are impressed by the quality of the entrants, and we have no doubt this year will be even better.

“It was a pleasure to meet so many incredible women doing amazing things at the awards last year. The evening also showcases the vital role rural women play in fostering resilient and prosperous communities, and we are proud to continue to be a part of it.

“These awards provide a fantastic opportunity for women who own and operate rural enterprises to showcase their creativity and innovation. We are looking forward to recognising and celebrating this year’s entrants.”

Entries close on Friday, July 26, at 5pm. For more information and details on how to enter visit NZI Rural Women NZ Business Awards 2024 — Rural Women New Zealand.

Recognising water science

Third-year student Cady Burns has won the Waikato Regional Council Prize in Water Science for 2024.

Council chair Pamela Storey presented the prize, which recognises a University of Waikato student who shows outstanding ability in water science papers taught in the university’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.

“Regional councillors hear community concerns about water quality frequently and share their aspirations for the Waikato region’s water quality,” says Cr Storey.

“Water is one of our six strategic priorities. We recognise that clean, healthy water is critical for the environment, our freshwater ecosystems and for community health and wellbeing. For us, part of that recognition is encouraging the next generation of water scientists to come forward.

“Waikato Regional Council encourages more students to take up the challenge of studying water and other environmental science.

“I wish it wasn’t such a well-kept secret, but this organisation has a phenomenal team of environmental scientists who are critical for the work we do. We need more in the future.”

Cady enrolled at the University of Waikato in 2022 to study freshwater ecosystems, looking at quantity and quality. She completes her undergraduate study in July and has set her sights on a master’s degree, investigating climate impacts around lake systems.

“Her research will focus closely on lakes that have affected communities during previous flood events, especially around

hydrology and water quality. She will apply modelling and projection methods to understand the lakes’ dynamics and, hopefully, shed light on future impacts of our changing climate.”

She says water is a lifelong passion of hers, from swimming in local lakes as a child to navigating rivers, studying outdoor

education and building a career in white water rafting and kayaking.

Cady has combined her study with work at The Wastewater Specialists. Last year, she presented her research findings on the toxicity of different portaloo products at the Water New Zealand Conference. Her study evaluated the impact these types

of products used in New Zealand have on the biological systems in wastewater treatment plants.

“The experience validated my dedication to water science and provided valuable insights for addressing environmental challenges in the field of wastewater management,” she said.

Containing wool costs

As one of the largest wool buyers and exporters in New Zealand, Segard Masurel (pronounced as you read it) is only too aware of escalating costs impacting their farming clients up and down the country.

The firm supports the auction system, keeps its selling costs to a minimum and also buys a significant amount of wool sold at auction by other brokers.

Over the past 20 years, as farmers have looked for alternative selling avenues, the team at Segard Masurel has developed a strong direct-buying option to fulfil their long-standing and substantial export contracts.

“We aim to give a very simple and direct path to market,” said wool manager, Scott McLeod.

“You deliver your wool to our Napier wool store and after testing (growers’ cost), we give you the market price — no deductions and no selling fees. Simple!

“Segard Masurel has been buying New Zealand wool for more than 100 years, and its financial position is second to none within the New Zealand wool industry. It additionally operates out of France, Belgium, South Africa and Australia, and sells into markets across 30 countries worldwide.

“Two of Segard Masurel’s New Zealand executives flew to the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) congress in Adelaide last month, taking advantage of the event being relatively close to home and putting them in touch with over 350 delegates from all around the world.”

The company’s French CEO, Olivier Segard, also attended and was delighted to be elected vice-president of the IWTO for the upcoming term.

“It is excellent to have someone with New Zealand interests appointed to this position. Another bonus for the Segard Masurel trio at the congress was to meet with New Zealand’s Minister for Rural Communities and Associate Minister of Agriculture, the Honourable Mark Patterson.

“Sharing insights into the wool sector with those in positions of influence is helpful to the promotion

of New Zealand wool locally and internationally.

“Some of the company’s predominant and long-established customers include carpet manufacturers in New Zealand, China and Northern Europe. Bremworth and Godfrey Hirst are two brands that are keen partners of Segard Masurel.

“More than 60 per cent of our wool is sold to well-recognised brands operating within the global fashion, knitting, bedding, blankets and interior textiles industries. Join us on our journey to market New Zealand wool to the world. Make a change — give us a try!”

Balanced partnership wins

Will Hinton and Kali Rangiawha from Manawatū were described as an incredibly driven couple who are both farmers in their own right, as they were named the 2024 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year.

“Will and Kali impressed the judges with the strength of their partnership and in the way they balance each other,” says Share Farmer category head judge Michele Cranefield from ANZ.

“They are a very good team, and one could pick up where the other left off. They are impressive with numbers, and are extremely passionate about the dairy industry, what they’re doing and how they’re doing it.

“Born in the UK, Will holds a BSc in Agricultural Business Management from Reading University and a National Diploma in Agriculture from Lackham College. He built a farming partnership with his dad comprising 500 sheep and 30 cows.

“After travelling the world as a shearer, he landed in New Zealand, where he worked as a farm consultant and data analyst for two and a half years. He met Kali, who had realised dairy farming was her future while relief milking to fund her university studies.

“Kali has worked her way through the industry from farm assistant to the couple’s current role as contract milkers for Tim and Victoria Gorton on their 350cow, 113ha Halcombe farm.”

The runners-up in the Share Farmer of the Year competition are Waikato farmers Logan and Sian Dawson, and Central Plateau couple Paul and

Sarah Koopal placed third in the Share Farmer category.

Northland’s Kieran McCahon became the 2024 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year.

“Kieran stood out as an intelligent, welleducated farmer who is passionate about adding value to the New Zealand dairy industry as a whole,” said the judges.

“Kieran is very well educated and has brought that technical skill to his home farm while identifying the differences between the technical detail to the practicality of farming.”

The Dairy Manager runner-up was Teagan Gray from Auckland/Hauraki, and Sarah Avery from Taranaki placed third.

The 2024 Dairy Trainee of the Year was awarded to Kirwyn Ellis from Waikato, who is described by the judges as a relaxed, thoughtful and mature young man, who ‘soaks up knowledge like a sponge’ from those around him.

The Dairy Trainee runner-up was Monique Radford from Canterbury/North Otago, and third placegetter was Isabella Panettiere from Manawatū. James and Debbie Stewart from Manawatū received the Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award, while Central Plateau’s Paul and Sarah Koopal won the Cow Manager cow monitoring system for three years.

Ahuwhenua Trophy winner

Wairarapa Moana ki Pouakani Incorporation (WMI), based at Mangakino in the central North Island, is this year’s winner of the coveted Ahuwhenua Trophy for the top Māori dairy farm.

The Minister for Māori Development, the Honourable Tama Potaka, made the announcement at an awards dinner in Hamilton on Friday, May 17.

WMI consists of 12 dairy units across 4,300ha, plus three dairy support units comprising 1,900ha and two forestry blocks totalling 6,100ha. They entered one of its 12 farms in the competition — Farm 4, and this was the winning farm. The property has a milking platform of 300ha, milking 980 cows and producing 416,000 kgMS.

WMI produce about five million kilograms of milk solids from their 12,000cow herd and is the largest supplier to milk processor Miraka Ltd. The farm operates within the top five per cent of the industry benchmarks and operates a high-care, high-efficiency model where its environmental footprint has been reduced by 30 per cent, and this work is supported by applying the Mauri Compass Model on improving water quality.

Hon Tama Potaka described the Ahuwhenua Trophy as the most prestigious award in Māori farming that acknowledges and celebrates business excellence in New Zealand’s important pastoral and horticultural sectors.

“For Māori, the award is a demonstration of success and pride, but also a demonstration of identity, which is inextricably linked into land, seas, forests, mountains and rivers,” he says.

“There is a real conviction among Māori farmers that they have an intergenerational responsibility for the future of their land and that this will not be reduced by the ups and downs of the current economic climate.”

Kingi Smiler, chair of WMI, said after winning the competition he was both elated and relieved, adding it was a tough competition being up against Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board.

“I take a lot of pride in winning and it is a reward for all the WMI whānau, as they have a very dedicated team who do a lot of work around strategy, planning and

execution, and it is this teamwork that makes these things happen,” he said.

“Personally, I like a challenge, and meeting that challenge requires
