A range of exhibitors showcasing products, technology and services are also in attendance. Such shows have a rich history, deep rooted in our early New Zealand traditions once being the highlight of the community’s annual calendar. The Waikato’s A&P Show dates back to 1892. The usual livestock, farrier, equestrian, dog trials and calf club competitions are on offer, but don’t forget to check out the sheep shearing demos and the sheep racing — where seven highly trained sheep are mounted by jockeys in a race to the finish line. It is sure to be very entertaining. New events are also scheduled for this year — an axemen competition has attracted the very best of New Zealand and Australian choppers. Programme event take place. This new activity will provide Hamilton based Primary and Intermediate Schools the opportunity to interact with the rural community with the focus being education. The Lumber Jack Show will be on show all weekend. Patrons will see world number one pole climber, Canadian Stirling Hart and his rival eight times world champion, Brian Bartow, go head to head in the climbing competition. Axe throwing, log rolling and chainsaw duelling are also part of the show and in spite of the seriousness the act is interspersed with much hilarity. The thrills and spills of three-a-side polo will debut at the show on Sunday. Teams will compete for the Paul Clarkin Memorial Trophy. Simon Keyte, one of the world’s top five percent of players is organising the two teams made up of NZ and Australia’s top players so the event

promises to offer some top class polo.

For the first time in 10 years a Highland Dancing competition will be held. Dancers nationwide have expressed an interest in the event which will be held on the Saturday. Apart from the Highland flings and reels and Irish jigs, dancers will perform the sword dance, and the Sailors’ hornpipe dances. Two national judges, both from the south island will officiate over the competitions which will feature a range of dancers from as young as seven through to adults. A new food show — Feast Waikato will showcase Waikato food and beverages building on the theme of fresh food gourmet cooking and farmers’ markets. Entertainment includes celebrity chef demonstrations. The last time a Royal New Zealand

Show was hosted in the North Island was back in 2005 and this too was at Claudelands. A `Royal Show’ is the premier flagship event of the Royal Agricultural Society and attracts fierce competition as entrants seek the prestigious supreme ribbon for the animal of their breed. RAS president Bruce Orr said he was delighted to make the announcement after the green light was given to Waikato — its sure to be a bumper event. Gates open from 9am — 4pm daily. Family passes cost $25, otherwise adults are $12, children 5–14 $5, under 5 free. Put a ring around the dates and head on down for the action.

Cutting edge sports test traditional rivals

Auckland’s Central Business District is not where you would normally expect to see wood chopping, sheep shearing and dog trialing, but come mid-October head in and around Queens Wharf and be amazed. by Annette Lambly-Robinson

he Auckland events come hot on the heels of the same events staged in Wellington at Frank Kitt’s Park and Waitangi Park at Te Papa on October 1 and 2. Both events are organised by Cutting Edge Sport, a company formed to showcase these three iconic and traditional New Zealand Sports during the Rugby World Cup Tournament as part of the Real NZ Festival. The Cutting Edge Rural Sports 2011 experience brings the country to the city. Competitions include Trans-Tasman events — wood chopping and sheep dog trialing competitions along with speed shearing competitions in which New Zealand’s top eight shearers will sweat it out for the fastest time. Organiser (and a Dairy Flat sheep farmer himself) Steve Hollander said, “While the events will be staged as a public attraction they will still be highly competitive.’’ The traditional nature of these rural sports have a long history in this country and are strong in the hearts and minds of many New Zealanders. They are not however always able to be readily enjoyed by city dwellers or visitors to the country.

On October 17 at Queens Wharf, New Zealand’s top eight shearers will battle it out for supremacy. Champion shearers are recognised as world-class athletes. The physically demanding farming task of shearing sheep has become an elite competitive sport where shearers remove the fleece from the sheep at breathtaking speed. New Zealand is home to two shearing superstars — 2010 World Champion Cam Ferguson and David Fagan — a shearing legend who has won the world championships and New Zealand championships a record number of times. The two day Trans-Tasman test match dog trial series will take place — for the first time ever right in the heart the of a major New Zealand city — Auckland Domain on October 19 and 20.

Sheep dog trials are a test of the bond between the farmer and their ‘best friend’ — the working dog. The pair’s stockhandling skills are put to the test in a series of challenges which usually involve maneuvering a flock of wily sheep around a course and into a pen. Who will out-smart who in the quickest time? Forestry was one of this country’s first industries and our first export product. Being an axeman was once a livelihood but nowadays it is a much contested and skilled sport. Mr Hollander said the new Trans Tasman Wood Chopping ANZAXE series launched at Queens Wharf on October 19–22 will become an annual fixture between the two countries. Two thirds of the top 20 axemen in the world hail from Australia or New Zealand. Kiwis Jason Wynyard (this year’s world champion) and David Bolstad who between them have won the World Championships for the past 15 years will lead the New Zealand team It will be a close competition against recent runners up in the world championship Australians, Brad Delosa and Laurence O’ Toole and their respective team.

ir William was presented with the award at the launch of the 2012 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards competitions on September 27 at Gordonton. It is only the second time this award has been presented — retired Massey University professor Colin Holmes was the inaugural recipient in 2009. At 69, Sir William is considered one of New Zealand’s most astute businessmen. He chairs the Gallagher group — a family owned, Hamilton based exporter of animal management, fencing and security systems. He is a natural leader, whose communication skills and business influence is nationally and internationally recognised. company and succeeded with it internationally. His company’s contribution to New Zealand farming systems has been huge.” “He has created a work environment that encourages personal empowerment and independent thinking. A true entrepreneur, he has a sense of urgency and controlled risk taking, which is supported and managed by the positive team he works with,” Mrs Kuriger said. In presenting the award she said Sir William was a man who placed a strong emphasis on ethics and integrity in both his professional and personal dealings. “He is viewed by the trustees as an outstanding New Zealander and a fine example to current and prospective business people.” Married to Judi, the Gallaghers live in Hamilton. They have three adult children and are proud grandparents. Sir William was knighted in this year’s New Year’s honours for services to business. It is the third honour to be bestowed — he received an MBE in 1987 and was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998. He was also awarded the Queen’s Commemorative Medal for Services to New Zealand in 1990. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Waikato and in 1996 he was the winner of the prestigious Excellence in Communication Leadership award, the first time since its beginning in 1961 that the award had gone outside North America. Sir William has a strong and active commitment to the

environment he lives and works in. He is a major sponsor of the Rescue Helicopter, Waikato Stadium, Mounted Police, Gallagher Family Hospice, Gallagher Hockey Centre and the establishment of the Performing Arts centre at Waikato. Bill Junior — (now Sir William) joined the Gallagher Group’s shop floor fresh out of university in 1962 and he along with his brother John (who left the company in 1997 but is still a shareholding director) have grown the company to what it is today — a multinational, multifaceted $100 million export company employing 1,000 people globally. From fences they have expanded into access control, security fencing and injection-moulded plastics. Their technology is in 130 countries, keeping prisoners locked up in the United States and elephants corralled in Africa. There is even Gallagher security fencing around Buckingham Palace. The world leading company has factories the world over and 70 percent of their products are exported.

the history behind the Gallagher Group

Back in the 1930s it’s doubtful Waikato farmer Bill Gallagher knew what ‘wiring’ his car to stop the family horse Joe from using is as a scratching post would lead to — he was really just looking for a solution to breaking Joe’s annoying habit. For Bill Gallagher Senior setting up an electric circuit to his car was a farmer’s approach to solving the problem. Bill was a bit of an inventor — he built homemade tractors — he fitted his first old car with iron-shod cleated wheels that pulled a roller to flatten scrub that was then burnt — a practical solution to help work his undeveloped farm. After reading the Americans were using electrified wire to hold stock in, in 1937 Bill Gallagher made his first electric fence. He originally used mains power to power the fence, but this was deemed illegal by the authorities and was disconnected. Undaunted Bill turned to batteries and Ford coils and continued developing and experimenting on his own

farm until he had a pretty good product, albeit one that was only effective in small areas, it was very competitive on the market of the day. In 1938 he formed the Gallagher Company which grew into a ‘10 man business’.

A classic from Ford Ballistic performance and high levels of refinement. That was the opinion of motoring writers when the iconic Ford Falcon XR6 hit the market. The Aussie brainchild is lauded for driving pleasure, engineering excellence and attention to detail — according to one reviewer when it came out in 2009, ‘it feels as though the entire vehicle — including the engine — has spent the last four years training in Germany’. The XR6 Turbo rides smoothly over rough roads because of its Germansourced shock absorbers and it’s quiet at cruising speeds. ‘Together with a new steering system the big Ford drives more like a European import than a locally made automobile’. The car features one-touch indicators and cruise control but the power centre is what has impressed owners the most. The six-cylinder 4.0 engine is happy to do its suburban cruising to shops and school and sports days — but get it on the open roads and its performance is something else.

At low speeds it’s quiet and refined and then look out when the turbo kicks in on the open road. Watch the speed limit. The six-speed automatic transmission also has a Teutonic influence as it comes from ZF, a German gearbox company. Across the spectrum of car reviewers in 2009, is the recurring view that this vehicle is great to drive, with precise steering, smooth suspension, great braking power and acceleration. For the technically minded, the turbo straight six engine, delivers 533Nm of torque from 2,000rpm through to 4,750rpm and will lift it from nought to 100km/h in about 5.6 seconds. ‘It’s a very refined engine, easily one of the smoothest turbocharged engines on the market and is almost on even footing with BMW’s twin turbo inline 6-cylinder engine,’ said one test driver quoted by Ford. The 4.0-litre power plant features four valves per cylinder with a Garrett turbocharger developed specifically

for the engine, which brings in boost pressure from 6 psi to 10 psi with a large intercooler. David Mitchell, the powertrain development manager at Ford Australia says the engine also includes a new air induction system for better flow, a higher compression ratio of 8.8:1 and

an improved variable camshaft system which increases fuel efficiency at lower revs. Ford claims average consumption of 11.7 litres per 100km. The Falcon XR6 Turbo is 4.97 metres from front to back and 1.868 metres wide.

Yamaha has opened the design doors on next years’ contribution to its extensive ATV lineup

The company has introduced the 2012 YFZ450, following the YFZ450R, the YFZ450X, the Raptor 250, and the Raptor 125. This revamped YFZ450 retains the same excellent chassis design and motor features that made the original YFZ such a great performing machine. Yamaha couldn’t ignore the fact that these days it’s becoming more difficult to afford the purchase of a new, brand-name performance ATV. In response, the company found a way to keep prices down and the new YFZ450 is to sell at less than the 2004 YFZ cost at its debut seven years ago. Yamaha replaced the previous model piggyback front shocks with a pair of high quality, non-reservoir shocks designed to excel at handling a wide variety of riding situations. For the rear suspension, a highly tuned Showa piggyback shock returns on this newest model, with the only difference being found in the adjustability features. And — good news — the 2012 YFZ450 suspension components are compatible with all previous model YFZs, which means all sorts of suspension swapping is possible between this new machine and any of the previous year 450s. The used parts market is abundant and affordable, and there is always someone selling off their used stuff to make way for newer components. The YFZ450 retains the same powerplant as earlier models, but with a redesigned cam for 2012.

Yamaha also made a few important changes in the power department. While the engine compression ratio remains at 11.4:1, Yamaha made a few adjustments to the camshaft profile, allowing the new YFZ the ability to produce even more power on the bottom-end and throughout the mid-range, while sacrificing very little from the top-end. This new cam grind gives the motor a stronger feel from the very start, but also improves its overall powerband comfort and rideability. So Yamaha seems to be moving with the economic times and keeping the purchaser in mind by improving performance, without delving into the bank balances too much — a pragmatic approach which will surely appeal to its customers.

Young Farmers to grow mo’s for Movember The challenge is out there for New Zealand’s Young Farmers to prove they can multi task: cultivate something on their top lips while at the same time think about their health. Movember is back, and while lots of Young Farmers have energetically supported this campaign, this year New Zealand Young Farmers is calling for a concerted effort — and that’s where the inaugural NZYF Inter-region Face Fleece Challenge for Movember comes into it. In 2011 the NZYF Regions will battle it out to see who can produce the biggest ‘face fleece,’ the dirtiest slugs and the

bushiest mo’s in Movember. Clubs will register to be a part of the Challenge and at the end of the month each club will have a shave off and — wait for it — combine their face fleece yield with the rest of their region’s in the hopes of gaining bragging rights as the hairiest region for 2011. Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen Winter is a great time for bulk milk chilling systems, chilling water temperatures are low and milk volumes are small. It won’t be that way for long, summer will arrive and temperatures will rise, not the least of which will be the milk going into the Vat. I looked up the NZFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority) NZCP1: Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies. On page 38, 7.14 Milk Cooling it states: Milk must be cooled to 18 Deg C or less at the completion of the first milking into the bulk milk tank, and should not exceed 13 Deg C at the completion of subsequent milkings and milk must be cooled to and maintained at 7 Deg C or below within 3 hours of the completion of milking and kept at 7 Deg C or below until it is collected or the next Milking. This is a tough call for a lot of Dairies with Primary chilling water for some over 23 Deg C during summer and very ordinary chillers. It is a reality however that the Dairy Companies are toughening up around the Code of practice and quickly. The solutions are not cheap and cheerful, they have to be designed to suit the Dairy and the load to get the milk into the vat and maintained properly and be cost effective. No8 wire or “she’ll be right” isn’t going to measure up. Fishing Hunting Paradise shelduck numbers continue to decline Cull may be stopped if paradise duck numbers continue to decline. According to Fish and Game the special season hunting on paradise shelduck could be cancelled next year if flock sizes continue to decline. Fish and Game (Auckland/Waikato) have been monitoring paradise shelduck numbers in the King Country since 1983, by conducting annual aerial moult counts. The last four years have revealed a large reduction in the total count and 2011 recorded a new low. This has been coupled with a substantial reduction in harvest rate during the special King Country paradise shelduck season held for the last 24 years on the last weekend in March. Due to the reduction in moult counts Fish and Game have had to implement more restrictive conditions for the special season, but despite this, numbers continue to decline. Fish and Game chief executive, Doug Emmett, said the organisation was trying

to strike a balance between the farming sector and hunter interests. “It is acknowledged that large flocks of paradise shelduck can do damage to pasture and crops and Fish and Game have a number of mechanisms to deal with such situations,’’ he said. “If the trend continues to decline there is a strong possibility that the special season will be cancelled next year to let the population recover.’’ Paradise shelduck are likely to concentrate on high quality pasture and properties such as those that have been converted from sheep and beef to dairy, tend to experience the greatest problems, especially where there is new grass. “As always, we urge any farmers who experience issues to contact us immediately so we can help to alleviate the situation without delay,’’ he said. Any farms with problems will continue to be managed by issuing permits to either disturb and/or cull. “It is imperative landowners go through the correct channels,’’ said Mr Emmett. “Fish and Game will prosecute anyone partaking in unauthorised culls.” This year farmers in the King Country, Waitomo, Otorohanga and Ruapehu district council areas who have large congregations of moulting birds during summer months are asked to contact Fish and Game on 07 849 1666 or email to admin@awfg.org.nz.

Michael Fresnel, Principal, NZ Accounting, believes technology is the problem – and that accounting software is for the most part not good value for money, is time consuming, and is often difficult to use.

Software companies and accountants make money selling software and upgrades – and farmers are the ones paying for those upgrades every year,” says Fresnel. That is why NZ Accounting doesn’t use specialised software and have settled for simple systems that work – which means costs are less for the firm and for the client, he says. “Our fees are less because we’ve gone back to our knitting – we simply focus on the bookkeeping process of accounting for farmers. We’re not high and mighty types – we keep it simple, we work hard, we get the basics right.” NZ Accounting do all of the data entry, GST and end of year tax filing for only $1500+GST per annum for farmers turning over less than $3 million – which means clients of the firm only spend a couple of hours each year working on the books.
