Problems with Iron and Manganese?

At the Waikato Mayoral Forum, the mayors of Matamata-Piako, Waipa, South Waikato, Waitomo, ThamesCoromandel, Hauraki, Taupo and Otorohanga district councils, and chair of the regional council, Alan Livingston, supported a proposal to take a collaborative approach to manage water and stormwater assets. The aim is to develop a business case to establish a centre of excellence to support the councils in improving the management of water assets. This jointly funded project would build on the successes of RATA — the Road Asset Technical Accord, set up by 10 Waikato councils three years ago to achieve similar improvements in the roading sector. The new Water Asset Technical Accord — WATA would aim to establish best practice in water and waste water, and provide the councils with guidance on asset and environmental management, compliance frameworks and investment decision-making, with the aim of establishing activities. The group will be convened by Matamata-Piako District Council chief executive, Don McLeod. “We know the government are looking to introduce a much tougher regulatory environment in the water, waste water and storm water space. We want to demonstrate that the Waikato is ready to step up and work collaboratively to not just meet the requirements, but deliver best practice,” he said. “RATA has provided significant benefits to Waikato roading teams in improving strategic asset management processes and systems through collaboration, and a waters collaboration would do the same.” Regional council chairman, Alan Livingston, said while there was much

Don McLeod, Matamata-Piako District Council chief executive

work happening with water within the councils themselves, it was appropriate for the Waikato to demonstrate leadership in this space and understand the opportunities possible through effective collaboration in response to the government’s direction. “It makes sense for the Waikato to work together, as one voice and to share increased costs of compliance. Smaller councils will find the increased compliance costs the hardest, and they can’t afford the best experts or afford to make mistakes. “The financial benefits of collaboration have been proven with the work that has been done in the management of roading, and costs are being further minimised by using the established frameworks of RATA, which already has the knowledge and understanding of this kind of collaboration in the Waikato.”

Council proposal reviewed

The Waikato District Council has notified its final proposal for representation arrangements for the next local body elections, including the shape of the district’s voting wards and the number of councillors elected. As a result of public submissions received, the council has decided that it will not proceed with its initial proposal to shift Mercer from Awaroa ki Tuakau Ward into Whangamarino Ward, nor to move Rangiriri from Whangamarino Ward to Hukanui-Waerenga Ward. However, a small part of Awaroa ki Tuakau Ward’s northeastern rural community will still move into Whangamarino Ward, and a portion of Whangamarino’s southeastern rural community will move into the Hukanui-Waerenga Ward under the final proposal. As a result of submissions received, the council has decided against disestablishing the Onewhero-Tuakau Community Board and splitting it into two new bodies. Instead, the final proposal extends the size of the community board to take in areas surrounding Tuakau that were originally intended to be part of a separate Tuakau Community Board under the initial proposal. “We are required to review these arrangements at least once every six years to ensure that individuals and communities in our district are fairly represented on and by the council,” says Waikato District mayor, Allan Sanson. “Our initial proposal was designed to

offer fairer representation in our northern-most Awaroa ki Tuakau Ward where the district’s population has grown. However, we have listened to our people in Mercer, Rangiriri and elsewhere who did not want to see their current representation change before the 2019 elections, so we will just keep an eye on our population growth and review things again at an appropriate time.” The council’s final proposal continues to recommend retaining 13 councillors elected from 10 wards — plus the mayor elected at large. In 2017 the council made two other important decisions as a part of the representation review process — the decision to retain ‘first-past-thepost’ as the electoral system, and the decision not to introduce Maori wards in the district, but to explore ways by which Maori interests can be better represented through council processes. The final proposal is now

K

elvin, and his wife Cathy, recently added the 2018 Countdown Champion of Champions Cheese Award — Commercial at the recent New Zealand cheese awards to their collection. “We believe we produce the right cheese for competing and thought we could win the Champion Dutch Style Award, but it went to the aged cumin Gouda from Barrys Bay Traditional Cheese,” said Kelvin. “Each year we compete with our Gouda, Camembert and blue cheeses. It was a ‘nice surprise’ to win the overall category — we were quite shocked. “Master judge, Russell Smith, said our organic cumin seed Gouda was an absolutely superb cheese and that the flavour profile exhibited all the best characteristics of this traditional style,

the piquancy of the cumin blending beautifully with the slightly sweet yet savoury notes of the cheese.” Kelvin established their cheesemaking facilities 20 years ago on their 40ha farm, with a second-hand plant and machinery and later opened the cafe on-site. Kelvin is an engineering and dairy science graduate of Massey University and decided to try his hand at cheesemaking after working for local dairy companies and building dairy factories overseas. “While working in Australia commissioning milk pasteurisers I saw an Italian farmer stretching mozzarella from his own cow’s milk and decided that could be my dream job,” says Kelvin. “I had to start from scratch and purchased pieces of old machinery and

The Productivity Commission has recommended that up to 2.8 million hectares of trees are planted to achieve New Zealand’s carbon neutrality by 2050.

Whatever species are used, this would nearly triple our planted forest estate. It represents the biggest land use change since we first lost most of our indigenous forest cover. It would be the biggest project ever undertaken by a New Zealand government, certainly since the 1870s.

We’ve always grown trees for their timber. From now, trees are also to be grown in the global battle against climate change. The government, together with iwi, farmers and the public, will need to get this right for our very environmental and economic survival. The challenge is huge.

stored them at my brother-in-law’s hay barn. Then I completed a cheesemaking course at Massey University and got advice from the top four cheesemakers of the time. “I bought the farm in 1997 and milked 85 cows in the morning and put together the factory piece by piece during the day. It was really hard work, and we grew to milking 110 cows.” The farm became BioGro certificated organic three years later, and Kelvin started making a few basic cheeses using the milk his cows produced. “Camembert was the first cheese Kelvin made, but he threw it out because it wasn’t up to his standard — there were a few disasters along the way when he first started out,” says Cathy. “As cheese production increased he sold the herd of cows and started collecting organic milk from neighbouring farms to use. Consistency is very important to us and knowing our milk suppliers means we are aware of what the cows are eating, how they are cared for and how the product will work. “The milk goes into making the cheese, yoghurt and butter. The products are sold at our cafe and selected supermarkets, organic and speciality stores such as Farro Fresh.” The couple says winning the top award reflects on the quality of the raw milk product and exceptional staff. “We have also won awards for sheep milk cheese and have experimented with buffalo and goat milk. We believe in keeping things as simple and natural as possible, and we don’t use any artificial additives, antibiotics, growth hormones or chemical sprays in our products. “Our milk suppliers pride themselves in providing an organic product that

The cows are not fed grains, which makes all our products suitable for people on grain-free diets. “Our cheeses, yoghurts and other products are unhomogenised, glutenfree, have no GMO or artificial additives, and no antibiotics, growth hormones or chemical sprays. “We also have a small petting farm on-site, and people love to feed the animals that we have here, including our very friendly goats — Rocky and Tilly. We have alpacas, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, Cookie the spotty sheep, budgies, quails and canaries. “Having the animals makes a lovely atmosphere. We do cheese tastings and

talks by arrangement for groups and clubs of 20 people or more when Kelvin is available. He is our chief cheesemaker, and there is a viewing window so people can see the cheeses being made.” Kelvin says with cheesemaking people forget one important thing.

“The bacteria that goes into making cheese is not acknowledged often enough. It sounds silly but they work tirelessly — yet everyone forgets how vital these bugs are to making wonderful cheese and they deserve to be recognised as well.” FOREST HARVESTING & MARKETING SOLUTIONS • Forest and woodlot harvesting and marketing • Domestic and export log sales • Harvesting management • Forest management • Harvest planning and roading

Rivers are a roading network for fish, and along with freshwater crayfish and shrimps, some twenty-two types of native fish call streams and rivers home in the Waikato region.

by Ann van Engelen

“I

grew up hunting and fishing with my dad from a young age, and I was always interested in freshwater ecology and went to university to study this topic,” says Waikato Regional Council’s Bruno David. “I later studied the important role of wood and debris dams in streams and used radiotelemetry among a range of techniques to track native fish movements and behaviour. “The native fish populations have decreased dramatically, predominantly because of changes to their habitat and people are working to re-establish a healthy environment for their survival.” Fish move from the ocean to headwaters and as climate change occurs, a lot of actions are having an impact on them.

“We have been using a technique called otolith microchemistry to learn more about the life history of different fish species. Inside the head of fish are two crystalline structures called otoliths or ‘ear stones’. These structures are made of calcium carbonate and as the fish grows rings are laid down in much the same way as the trunk of a tree.” The rings can be counted under a microscope to work out how old a fish is, and it incorporates the water chemistry of the environment in which each fish has been living. This technique provides a fingerprint of where the fish has been. “Marine life on the west coast of the North Island has been found to originate from nursery areas predominantly in the Kaipara and Raglan harbours. Some whitebait in the Waikato harbour are

the giant kokopu, and instead of coming from the ocean they are using Waahi, Whangape and Waikare as a marine environment. Even though from the outside these lakes look degraded with poor water quality, they are still providing critical rearing habitat for some of our native fish. “Eels have an amazing life cycle — it can take 50 years before the female goes on a single journey returning to the tropics to breed and die. Eels like many other fish are under increasing pressure from habitat loss and have to compete for food with a range of invasive fish like Koi carp and catfish,” says Bruno. “Koi carp and catfish are invasive and have spread, and we are working together with farmers, forestry and others to rectify this and other river pollution issues.” The council have a demonstration project called CarpN Neutral and are taking invasive fish and producing recycled fertiliser to create a sustainable nutrient supplement for dune and other plant restoration initiatives. “The goal is to use the proceeds to try and maintain control on the fish at little to no cost to ratepayers and ensure outputs go back into restoration projects,” says Bruno. “Koi carp and catfish uproot water plants, lowering water quality and eating insects normally consumed by native fish. By fossicking through nutrient-rich sediments they incorporate excess nutrients lost from farms into their flesh so, removing them helps to remove some of the excess nutrients from our rivers.” Native fish are often secretive and can be hard to find. Adults tend to feed at night and hide during the day under the cover of logs, boulders, riverbanks and vegetation. “Species such as whitebait are

migratory, moving between fresh and sea water environments to complete their life cycles. Non-migratory species such as mudfish spend their entire life in freshwater.” Adult fish can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats — giant kokopu and inanga tend to be in lowland rivers, streams and wetlands, whereas koaro can ‘climb’ up waterfalls and live in high mountainous, bouldery streams. “Half of our fish species spend time at sea and are affected by dams and badly made or maintained culverts preventing them from migrating from the sea to freshwater habitats. “Their habitat is shrinking as wetlands are drained and streamside vegetation removed,” Bruno says. “Native fish that climb need wet surfaces to wriggle their way upstream. Ensuring migration routes are passable and planting alongside streams to

Install fish passes and remove structures that block their access and ensure the bottom of culverts is below the natural stream bed level. “Lowland areas are often valuable native fish breeding grounds, even fencing off whitebait spawning areas for a few months each year helps them. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

On the scent for a new lifestyle by Jill Dickie

The purchase of their 6.9ha lifestyle block in 2007 set Colin and Maureen Binns on a course of discovery and learning they didn’t anticipate, but they wouldn’t change it for anything!

I

n 2008 they opted to give up one of their stock grazing paddocks to grow truffles, in particular, Tuber melanosporum or Black Perigord. A steep learning curve followed until in 2015 they harvested their first crop, and each subsequent year have harvested more. In 2018, for the first time, they have had some for sale. “We are loving the journey, and we are always learning something new or different about the ‘black gold’,” said

Maureen. There is a mutually beneficial relationship between a host tree and the truffle, and in New Zealand host trees have included hazelnut and some species of oak and pine. Selecting the right truffle species best suited to your site will improve the chance of success, and the New Zealand Truffle Association has advice available for anyone considering embarking on a project. Once mature, truffles emit a strong chemical odour, and trained dogs are

Colin with their truffle dog, Jed

used to ‘sniff them out’. Maureen had not been around dogs in her past, so getting their springer spaniel was something very new and strange, but she now enjoys his presence.

“He is an awesome dog and loves life on the farm — and everyone who comes to visit here,” she said. There are various methods of processing truffles, and Colin and

Maureen harvest on smell. Colin cleans the dirt off them then they are air-dried. Each truffle is then wrapped in kitchen towel and put carefully into a glass jar with a lid on (to keep the smell contained). “We try to sell or use the truffle within a few days, but we can keep them refrigerated OK for two weeks,” said Maureen. For now, harvested quantities vary, so the Binns sell directly to a wholesaler. “We don’t think it’s a good way to make money, but it sure is challenging and interesting and frustrating and always guaranteed to keep you on your toes.” Since arriving at the property Colin and Maureen have hosted Wwoofers to help build and maintain the expansive grounds, and say they enjoy the interaction with young and older people from overseas — many of the earlier stayers have remained good friends that they like to visit when travelling themselves. As with most landowners, any travel is scheduled around work life, and for the Binns, it’s the truffle season and lambing time, and they rely on local farm sitters to care for the large animal family. They have cattle, sheep, chickens and ducks in residence, and the gardens are immense. There are two extensive orchard areas growing stone and pip fruits, citrus, nuts, and berries — providing an abundance of preserving options for Maureen. “We give away many jars of jams, jellies, sauces and chutneys to family and friends and donate to the local Rotary Club,” said Maureen. Colin enjoys a ‘hands-on’ approach and grows many and varied vegetables from seed in their vegetable gardens. The property also has a QEII covenant, which covers a Rewarewa forest and

HORTICULTURE Choosing your crop species

CITRUS TREES SPECIALISTS IN SUPERIOR FIELD GROWN TREES

Deciding which plant species and cultivar to plant is an important decision and plays an essential role in maximising the life of a pasture. The amount of feed available for dairy cows, in turn, affects the amount of profit from every hectare of pasture sown so is an integral element of farming life. The best results come from matching the cultivars you choose to the farm system, climate, soils and pests. There is a range of available options for pastures and each come with their strengths and weaknesses. Chicory is a popular staple plant that can be incorporated into a rotational grazing system through its active growing months. The plant is a shortlived leafy herb with high feed value. Maize crop is a vital crop for many New Zealand dairy farmers and represents a significant investment in time and resources. Fodder beet is another option and is a root crop with a high-yield potential. Kale has a deep root system and is normally used as a winter feed crop. Due to its deeper roots — it is very resilient through a drought so good for the drier parts of the country. Animals find plantain very palatable, which is a huge advantage. This crop establishes rapidly, is pest tolerant and

has a high mineral content to enhance milk production. Swedes are a great winter feed crop as they have a low tolerance to drought and perform best in cooler, moist environments. Their disadvantage is that they do not like waterlogging. Turnips

are a fast-maturing single-graze crop and are often used to bridge the summer feed gap and maintain milk production. Keeping these elements in mind, you will be sure to find a crop that will suit your situation and ensure the best return.

Growers are urged to be extra vigilant with the recent spate of fruit thefts happening around the country, particularly with avocado crops.

DAVID BEVEGE Owner Operator

NZ Avocado has received recent reports of avocado theft from orchards in Bay of Plenty and Northland and growers are encouraged to report thefts and any unusual activity in their area to the police as soon as possible — if you see something, say something. The police recommend all growers be extra vigilant and take steps to prevent theft, including increasing security around your orchard. If you witness any suspicious behaviour contact your neighbouring orchards to ensure they are also keeping a lookout. If a theft takes place, people are encouraged to report all instances and if you are a witness at the time of theft call the police emergency line on 111 immediately. Take as many details as you can of the thieves including their appearance and any vehicles and vehicle registration numbers; however, your safety should be your primary concern and do not put yourself in harm’s way. If you discover fruit has been stolen or have had fruit stolen recently and have not yet reported it, contact your local police station.

CONTRACTING

If you are approached by anyone trying to sell car boot loads or large amounts of avocados, take a description of the person and their vehicle registration and report this as well. To help protect your fruit and crops consider installing security cameras. If you are unable to do this, install signage as a deterrent that says the orchard is under surveillance. Installing a driveway alarm to alert you of people entering your property is

also an option and keep any gates to the orchard locked or install an electronic pin code gate. Regularly walk around your property and stay alert of anything unusual or potential risk areas that you may want to address and use your phone to take photos if you do see anything suspicious. Theft prevention signs can be ordered by emailing jo.nunn@nzavocado.co.nz — two signs per PPIN.

Wet weather can leave a short period of time to accomplish a host of tasks, and for many people, the focus is on producing a bountiful crop of maize or green pasture to ensure there is enough feed for their animals. Often hiring a local contractor is a good option as they know the processes and can get the job accomplished in a relatively short time frame, and have the relevant machinery. It will allow you to focus on other important tasks. If you are doing the work yourself, ensure that all your equipment is serviced and ready for productivity. Preparation for undersowing on cattle farms, or getting ready to cultivate maize and bringing in silage for the upcoming season all require reliable equipment to save precious time and inconvenience if equipment breaks down. Be aware that if the soil is damp or wet, the machinery used for aeration and harrowing, to turn the soil and prepare it for a fresh crop can cause compacting so it is best left until the ground dries out enough to take the weight of the equipment. Smaller mini spreaders have become popular as they are lighter on the ground and able to get to more inconvenient places.

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM Helicopter and fixed-wing aerial applicators are also often used to deliver fertiliser onto the necessary areas. Often contractors use the latest technology with GPS systems meaning less wastage of product being sown and environmentally friendly placement.

Remember, where possible, supporting friends and neighbours are often part of the farming lifestyle and getting together to accomplish certain tasks not only make specific jobs easier but also expands your knowledge base and sense of accomplishment.

Preparing seed beds

LOOK FOR ROOKS If you spot one on your property or in your neighbourhood, call 0800 BIOSEC (0800 246 732).

Rooks cause significant damage to crops and pasture. Waikato Regional Council is responsible for controlling them, but it’s a big help if we know of any new nesting sites. What to look for • Large black birds, in both urban and rural areas. • Nests at the tops of tall trees from now until December. Don’t scare or try to control rooks yourself as they’re likely to scatter and form new rookeries, making control more difficult.

Call 0800 246 732 waikatoregion.govt.nz/rook

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

When preparing to sow new seed, there are a number of key steps to consider including sowing date, seedbed quality, sowing depth and seed ground coverage. The sowing date affects pasture establishment, yield and persistence and this is particularly important in summer-dry areas, as sowing early allows individual plants more time to develop and reach more than 20 tillers in size, prior to a potentially dry summer. Later sowing in cooler autumn conditions means slower establishment due to the cooler temperatures, and greater potential to pug and damage new pastures in winter and spring. Sowing early in the dry autumns, after February 25, in dry conditions with treated seed is easier for contractors, means faster establishment and more yield, and sets up better pasture persistence. In a recent trial in Cambridge, seed with novel endophyte — NEA2, sown in late February remained in the ground for more than six weeks without rain. Treatments sowed before the rain maintained a high endophyte level and grew 2t DM/ha more than seed sown post-rain — 5.8t DM/ha versus 3.8t, from May to October. At the Forage Value Index value of 38c/kg DM for cool season pasture, that is $760/ha value added by sowing earlier. When preparing the soil, the goal is to produce a fine, firm, weed-free seedbed,

Shane Davis Bulk Spreading Ltd

ideal for plants to establish in. One factor often lacking is consolidation, which conserves moisture and makes it possible to achieve the right sowing depth. Research has shown sowing with a V-roller into a well-consolidated seedbed gave better white clover establishment than a poorly consolidated seedbed. When sowing ryegrass and white clover seed mixes, do so at a depth of 5–10mm to get the best establishment. White clover seed is small and sensitive to depth, and establishes much faster at this depth whilst ryegrass is less sensitive to sowing depth and still establishes well when sown at 20mm. At a depth of 50mm — neither species establishes well.

SERVICING CENTRAL WAIKATO SINCE 1990

• Fertiliser spreading specialist • Cartage & spreading with loader available • Prompt, efficient service

The exception to sowing shallow is in dry conditions when it is sometimes better to drill seed a little deeper into better soil moisture. In these conditions, white clover may struggle. A consolidated seedbed is critical to allow good depth control with a seed drill. In a soft seedbed, wheel tracks are pushed down, and coulter depths vary — leading to both uneven seed depth and establishment. There is no ‘correct’ ryegrass seed sowing rate for New Zealand farms. Both a standard and lower perennial ryegrass sowing rate can work well. More information can be found on the DairyNZ website under the feed/ pasture section.

Visa criteria for the dairy trainee and dairy manager categories have changed with entrants now eligible to enter as long as they hold a valid New Zealand work visa at the time of entry, at each stage of judging and have been employed full-time for two years on a New Zealand dairy farm when entries open. “This reflects the multicultural landscape of dairy employees,” says general manager of NZDIA, Chris Keeping. “We are excited by these changes and intrigued to see who will enter because of them. We have also removed the qualifications clause in the dairy trainee category — where a potential entrant could not have completed an NZQA level five or higher qualification in any field of study. “These changes acknowledge the awards programme as a learning

M Bovis farms share similar soils by David Law — Forward Farming

The strongest evidence yet that Mycoplasma bovis does not flourish in well-balanced soil conditions has been confirmed at the farms that first tested positive for the disease. Farms belonging to the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, which comprised 15,000 cows on a 4,133ha milking platform in South Canterbury, first tested positive for M bovis in July 2017, resulting in the culling of around 4,000 cows. The group was given the go-ahead to restock the affected farms after the compulsory stand-down period of 60 days but was warned by biological farming consultant David Law if the conditions in which the disease thrived were not rectified, it could reoccur. More than 100 soil tests were carried out across all van Leeuwen farms by Don Hart of Top Soils, and Law’s hypothesis was confirmed. “We found increasing evidence that the farms that had tested positive for M bovis all had the same characteristic — a low-pH soil, which is typically an imbalanced, minerally-depleted soil,” Law says. “In contrast, the soil tests taken on the farms clear of the disease showed a healthy pH of 6.3 — soil conditions M bovis doesn’t like. “This demonstrated a correlation between M bovis being present in imbalanced soils, and absent in healthy soils. The disease doesn’t live in the soil per se, but, as an anaerobic bacterium, it generally only thrives in low-pH farm conditions.” As a result, the van Leeuwens have implemented short-and-long-term plans

to rebalance the conditions on the affected farms to reduce the likelihood of M bovis returning. Law says his recommendations to Ministry for Primary Industries have not been actioned, leaving farmers in fear with no solution. Aad van Leeuwen agrees that MPI should have been more open-minded in their approach to finding a solution for farmers. Law says with the valuable information gathered from Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, those involved in the wider working team are better able to help farmers directly rather than going through the government.

“We welcome farmers to invite us to speak at discussion groups, where we can look at scenarios causing farmers anxiety, such as grazing young stock offfarm,” he says. “There are things farmers can do right now to greatly reduce the risk of M bovis flourishing on their farm; we are confident we can help.”

Positive beef growth Over the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 1.9 per cent, while the decline in the sheep flock was slowed by a lift in hoggets as farmers responded positively to strong prices and good grass growth leading into winter.

According to Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the annual stock number survey conducted by B+LNZ’s Economic Service also shows 3.7 million beef cattle — with beef production continuing to grow. The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a lift in weaner cattle in MarlboroughCanterbury, which was driven by younger cattle being retained by beef breeders. The research shows the impact of Mycoplasma bovis on sheep and beef farms has been mixed. B+LNZ Economic Service chief economist, Andrew Burtt, says the analysis reveals a younger ewe flock as farmers retain more hoggets for future production. The number of breeding ewes fell in all regions of New Zealand — and by 2.1 per cent overall. “The number of breeding ewes decreased 3.5 per cent to 8.3 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 0.8 per cent to 9.0 million. The decrease largely reflects farmers taking advantage of strong prices for mutton. There was also a preference — particularly in the older

farmer demographic — towards less labour intensive livestock options to sheep.” The national hogget flock is up on last year. “Hogget numbers increased 2.5 per cent to 9.1 million, largely from Marlborough-Canterbury where ewe hoggets were retained to replenish declining ewe flocks, and trade lamb purchases from Southland due to dry summer conditions. Mr Burtt says ewes were in good condition at mating and

going into winter due to feed availability. “However, early pregnancy scanning of ewes fell short of farmer expectations, which was high due to pasture levels during mating.” The lamb crop is expected to be down 3.8 per cent to 22.8 million. It follows a record lambing percentage the previous season and a smaller breeding ewe flock — but moderated by a lift in lambs from hoggets mated.

WHEELS

Not horsing around

As has been noted before in more than one farming-focussed journal, there are plenty of side-by-side (SSV) machines out there in the world today, which were primarily bred for recreation. As any farmer can tell you, the work you have to put in on the land is hardly recreational, though it does share with some pursuits — like hunting — the early starts, long hours and bountiful mud of the outdoors life. Considering that the most long-lasting two-wheelers and quad bikes on the rural scene were made specifically for farming, what does that mean for the newer concept of the SSV? Kawasaki would opine that it means there need to be different models in clearly differentiated categories. They would know — the same company which makes the practical Stockman off-road bike also makes the maniacal KX series of motocross freestylers and the tarmaccharring Ninja road bikes. That’s why the Kawasaki Mule Pro FX EPS looks like it’s built to work. Rather than considering horsepower and top speed, Kawasaki’s brains trust were looking at load capacity and torque, leaving recreational thrills for other departments of the company. The result is a machine as practical and unfaltering as a tank, with everything you might need for rural chores and nothing you don’t. Before even looking under the hood, check out the steel-based, utterly flat cargo bed. Square, close to one and a

half metres to the side, low and quick to load, and with plenty of tie-down options. It’s the biggest in its class and can lug 450 kilos with ease. Then there’s the seating arrangement — fit for three burly workers because as we know, some jobs require more than two pairs of hands. Someone at Kawasaki has been talking to farmers, and it shows in little details like these — and the fact that every Mule comes standard with doors, to keep the mud out. The EPS in the Mule Pro FX EPS’ title stands for electric power steering,

making it easier to handle on those long days of hard work. That’s no bad thing, as the off-road abilities of this 812cc, triple-cylindered machine make it easy to engage with the rough stuff. Terrain is comprehensively beaten into submission by a combination of long travel suspension and big 26 inch tyres — and the intuitive power steering

system means that it’s easier to point the Mule where it needs to be going at low speeds. With dual-mode differentials, true four-wheel-drive on demand and powerful disc brakes to add safety, the Mule Pro FX EPS doesn’t just go anywhere. It allows you to take more of your mates and your gear with you.

MERGE LIKE A ZIP DRIVE SAFELY

There are some things, which America does better — and big horsepower, internal combustion machines fall into that category for many of us. Classics like the Mustang, the Corvette, the Challenger — and of course, another ‘muscle’ machine from 1969 — the Grasshopper mower. The team at the Moundridge, Kansas headquarters of this global company have been working on the best designs to cover a lot of turf with smooth efficiency since the days when bell bottoms were a fashion choice. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of change over the decades, culminating in a range of lawn care machines — which are truly second to none when it comes to power and solid build quality. It matters here in New Zealand because of the hard work we expect out of a mower. It is doubly true of those of us who have a large, lifestyle block sized area to take care of. The obvious appeal of a big zero-turn machine is that it is easy to manoeuvre and that it covers a lot of ground in a single sweep. Grasshopper has added comfort to the recipe, with ergonomic seating and easy to use controls. Their mid-mount range provides an easy line of sight down to the cutting deck, so the operator knows exactly where they are going. Their even more powerful front mount machines place the blades to the fore — ideal for sneaking in under shelterbelts, bushes and low hanging trees. The options for customising a Grasshopper to your

lawn care needs don’t stop there, though. It’s possible to spec out one of these powerful mowers with a vacuum assisted catcher to tackle leaves as well as clippings. Rather than only offering petrol options, Grasshopper has stepped up to the plate with diesel models as well, especially handy for those who run a fleet of other machines (such as tractors

and utes) on diesel fuel. With a recent expansion to the range available in New Zealand, the Grasshopper company are living up to their catchphrase ‘it’s so much mower’. Imported here since 1987, there’s a solid dealer network to provide ongoing service and maintenance to keep the ‘muscle car of mowers’ running sweetly for years to come.

Railway crossing changes KiwiRail has a new policy coming down the track on private rail crossings, and farmers in Waikato and across the country will have more responsibility of maintenance and removing vegetation around crossings. There are approximately 1,300 private rail crossings along the rail network in New Zealand, and it’s estimated that as many as 700 of them are unauthorised or undocumented. “We need to know where people are crossing our tracks, and we need to ensure they are doing it safely,” says group general manager Investment, Planning and Risk, David Gordon. “That means we need to have a formal, legal record of all crossings, and we need to know that they are up to standard in areas such as the approach to the crossing, sight lines, signs and formation.” The aim is to inspect every crossing every two years. The original idea of charging farmers with crossings on their land a set annual fee was ditched after consultation. Instead, most farmers will be charged only the actual cost of the inspection, which is likely to be between $50 and $100. “We agree with KiwiRail that people’s safety is paramount and we appreciate

they have listened to our views on the issues before introducing the changes,” says Federated Farmers president, Katie Milne. Farmers will be responsible for the cost of any work needed to make sure the crossing is safe to use, such as removal of vegetation for adequate sight lines and maintenance of the road/ track surface. “It is good that KiwiRail will only charge actual costs and that KiwiRail is formalising farmer use of rail crossings, which provides farmers with some certainty that they can continue to use them, however, there is a concern that some informal rail crossings will be closed because the safety concerns are considered insurmountable. That’s going to be difficult for farmers if that was their only route for accessing parts of their farm, Federated Farmers will continue working with KiwiRail on these safety and access issues going forward.” says Katie.
