“Athletes from Wellsford to the Far North took part in multiple events with ribbons handed out to the winners,” says running coach Yvette Ferreira Botha. “More than 50 youngsters from throughout Northland took part. There were some impressive performances from all age groups — along with the Masters. “ We saw many standout performances. Among them was nineyear-old Blake Dickens, who threw the biggest discus of any age group on the day at 20.94m. “Blake also excelled in other disciplines with first placings in 100m,

“The rivalry between Mala SulvakoThomas, Addison Waihi and Grace Dumbleton on the track provided plenty of entertainment. “Grace took out the 100m and 200m with Mala second and Addison third. Grace also won the shot put, with Addison just behind and Mala in third place. Addison won the long jump, Georgia Pearks finished second, and Mala came third. In contrast to our athletes of the future, the Masters were well involved with Colin MacLeod winning the mile in a time of 8.14 seconds, ahead of Rob Griffen coming in second, and Tony Langton third.”

We are looking forward to working with the junior athletes next season

200m, shot put and a second in the high jump.” Leigha and Spencer Dinsdale from the Wellsford Athletics Club also put in a number of good performances. “Leigha finished with four second placings in shot put, discus, 800m and the mile. Spencer won the eight years’ long jump with a 3.1-metre leap, while also recording wins in shot put and high jump. “Te Konehu Puriri, age seven, showed plenty of promise with wins in shot put, discus, long jump, 60m, 100m and 200m sprints. “Leo Fenney, age 11, left it all on the track by recording the best long jump of any age group the day with 4.37m. Leo also accomplished the fastest 800m and the Mile, along with placing first in 100m and 200m.

Sein vander Veeken placed fourth, with Liz Griffin in fifth place and Oringa Barach rounding out the field with an impressive performance. “The efforts of all volunteers and coaches helped make the day a great success,” says parent volunteer Steve Macmillan. “We had a fantastic day with the athletes putting in a phenomenal amount of effort. “We are looking forward to working with the junior athletes next season and encourage children and their families who may be interested in athletics to come along and join us. “Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.” A full list of results and more action shots from the day can be seen on the Junior Athletics Whangārei Facebook page. ¢

Students grow giants

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

April 1 2022

u by Ann van Engelen

Kaiwaka School students presented their pumpkins of all shapes and sizes at the school’s annual giant pumpkin growing competition recently. “Every November, our students are given giant pumpkin seeds to plant and care for at home with their whānau,” says deputy principal Michelle Dempsey. “For the past few years, Amy Griffiths has organised the event for our tamariki. It is a good learning lesson for them and a way for families to work together at home and share what they have grown and created. “If we go back to the time the idea began, our area was more rural, and gardening was a big thing with lots of people having vegetable gardens. “The giant pumpkins became an offshoot of that and gave families the chance to learn together at home. The giant pumpkins aren’t grown for food but are more for aesthetics. “The children still absolutely love taking their seeds home and growing them over the summer with their family. “The whole caring and nurturing of something personally, watching it grow and taking care of it during their summer break excites them. “From seeing the first shoots to getting flowers and then the bud of the pumpkin thrills them. They love watching it grow, and some children measure their plant every day and keep records of its progress. “This year, we didn’t have such big growth, but in previous years, people have had to bring their harvest in on trailers or utes, and they have been up to at least 50kg. “In March, students bring in their biggest giant pumpkins to

see who has been able to grow the biggest and heaviest one. “Over the years, we have added in the best decorated pumpkin section. After the judging and weighing, the students’ most favourite thing is rolling their pumpkins down the hill at the Kaiwaka Sports Association to see whose giant rolls the longest distance. “Some explode on the way down or crash into each other and split open, and we have pumpkin pulp everywhere. Amy then collects the seeds from the largest pumpkins and drys them to give out for the next event. “Without the support from our parents and community, events like these would not happen. Teachers get involved too and have a great amount of fun growing. “Each year, we have a guest judge, and this year, it was Wendy Howard, the local Justice of the Peace and Kaiwaka librarian. She was very impressed with the creativity the students came up with and thought they all did well.” ¢

Seniors teach technology u by Ann van Engelen

SeniorNet Mangawhai is encouraging senior community members to join their fortnightly gatherings if they would like lessons or support to work with computers and other devices. “Our Mangawhai learning centre began 12 years ago with the help of the Warkworth centre,” says facilitator Val Cleaver. “We run help clinics every two weeks where people can turn up and join us. They don’t have to be members to come along. Clinics cost $10 for members and $15 for non-members. “At our last gathering, we showed people how to do online shopping, so they know what to do and how to be safe online.

make a photo album, learn about Google photos or how to do emails, and they can book a tutor for an hour. “For a non-member, it is $25, and for a member, it is $15, and they have the tutor’s sole attention for that period of time. “The Mangawhai Bowling Club has kindly allowed us to use their facility free of charge as sponsorship. We are very grateful for this as it helps us keep our equipment up to date and the club is a great facility.

I love teaching and helping others understand how to use the Internet

“Anyone who attends can share a technical problem they may have, and we sit together and try to sort an answer. “We had one gentleman who had never done online shopping as he didn’t feel safe, so we showed him how it works. “Some people have problems with how to work their cellphones, laptops or devices, and we all get together and work out a solution for the problem in easy to understand ways. “The other thing we do is offer one on one tuition. Someone may want to

“We run our fortnightly sessions regardless of how many people turn up. Last week, we went along to the Civilian Maimed Association and chatted to other seniors, so they knew what we do. “It was great to encourage the CMA members and let them know that we are here to help with devices. More families are buying older people devices now, and family members can’t always help their family members to learn as it can be difficult. “With us, it is seniors helping seniors, and we generally teach them at the level

they are at. I love teaching and helping others understand how to use the Internet and devices. “SeniorNet Centres are in towns right across New Zealand. The Mangawhai centre meets every fortnight. Our next meeting is at the Mangawhai Bowling

Club, 219 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads, on Wednesday, April 6, starting at 10.30am — it runs for two hours. “We have tea and coffee and a chit chat as well. It is a great place to meet together, learn about technology and make new friends.” ¢

Jean Kent was runner-up in the Croquet New Zealand Women’s Open, and it is her passion to coach and promote the game. “My husband, Gary and I lived at Whangamatā. We had a cafe-restaurant there, and the local radio station asked my husband if he would come and play a twilight game. One of their people was unable to attend. “My husband’s comment was ‘croquet? I’m going to play that when I get old’. He did go, and I went along to watch, and a second person didn’t show up. We both ended up playing, and we were hooked.” They joined a club when they retired in Kerikeri, and following her husband getting ill — they relocated to Waipū in 2012. “Unfortunately, Gary died 18 months later — it was tough. I nearly did not go back to croquet. Someone said to me that they had a tournament and needed

an extra person. They had lied, and that got me into it again. “I became a coach for Northland and work in the clubs. It’s rewarding. It has given me something to work on, it helped me and has given me a passion, and that is why I qualified as a coach, so that I could give back. “I believe that coaching is about facilitating players to reach their potential first, listening to their goals and then providing the knowledge, skills and encouragement for them to reach those goals.” Jean believes croquet is an undervalued sport that allows men and women to be put on an equal playing field. In her coaching career, she has seen secondary students who have done well in croquet internationally.

DESIGN DELIVER INSTALL

“I would encourage everyone to ‘give it a go,’ whatever age. There are seven clubs throughout Northland, and I would be happy to pass on any enquiries to the club in your area. The majority of new players get hooked and wish they had started playing sooner. “Croquet clubs, including my own club at Waipū, are very welcoming and provide an environment where all members are encouraged to make friendships, participate in management and have fun, keeping people connected and involved in their community both

mentally and physically. What I get most excited about is when women who haven’t played sports come and discover that they can be good at it. The game is physical and mental and is a Green Prescription game. “A doctor or nurse can prescribe you to the Green Prescription that is run by the Ministry of Health. It enables patients to be physically active to improve their health.” Jean welcomes anybody interested in trying croquet to call her on 027 688 5985. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

That dash of botanical spice u by Liz Clark

With winter just around the corner, finding shrubs to colour up the garden during the colder months seems impossible. Look no further than the beauty of the South African native leucadendron to give a bit of heat back into the winter garden. The genus has more than 80 species ranging from small shrubs of less than a metre to trees growing more than 16 metres high. A member of the protea family, these beautiful shrubs come in bright reds, yellows, greens and shades of white. Leucadendrons grow highly coloured leaves, known as bracts, with the flower at the top. They are highly valued as cut flowers by the floral industry and provide indoor colour in the home setting. They’re one way to keep colour around when nothing else is available. As with proteas, leucadendrons require an acidic free-draining soil

medium — they detest fertiliser. A light dressing of blood and bone each year will keep the plants vigorous and healthy. Avoid feeding high-potash fertiliser at all costs, or it will be the death of the plant. Planting time is during autumn and winter. It will allow the young plants to establish their root systems — ensure they are staked to prevent wind damage. Leucadendrons thrive in warm, sunny spots in the garden; plant where they will receive adequate sunlight avoiding shaded, damp areas. The plants should be spaced, so they receive good air circulation to prevent any problems with fungal diseases on the leaves. Regular watering at the base is important to keep your leucadendrons thriving. Apply a layer of mulch during the summer months

to conserve soil moisture — allow drying out between waterings. Deadhead pruning should be done regularly to prevent the plants from becoming too spindly. Regular cutting for floral arrangements will encourage further bracts to form. More than one plant will be needed if being used for cut flowers. Taking a look at available cultivars, one of the most spectacular is Safari Sunset. Developed in New Zealand in 1964, it has bright fire-red bracts — a must for any garden. Other available varieties include Inca Gold, Blush of Dawn, Bridal Bouquet, Clone 91, Cream Delight, Golden Tulip, Julie and Loving Memory. Visit your local garden centre or look online for more information and options. ¢

Artists join forces

u by Ann van Engelen

Artists Marion Stutz and Mel Juer are currently presenting their Two Views exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery until Tuesday, April 5. The exhibition is described as an expressive and expansive exhibition of acrylic and oil painting, drawing and ink work. The two artists share a love of drawing, nature and noticing the harmony of things around them. “For the opening, Marion and Mel were at the gallery, working together on the same piece of still life illustrating a true, real-life action play of Two Views,” says Belinda Vernon, chair of Mangawhai Artists. “Marion and Mel first met in drawing and painting classes at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. Their friendship, bound by enthusiasm for art, shares a passion for colour and expressive work. They also have a common interest in the beauty around us. “Throughout the exhibition, visitors will find either one of the working artists creating new work and providing the opportunity to engage and inspire. Both artists have been actively drawing and painting all their lives.”

Mel and Marion have lived in many countries, as well as New Zealand, fuelling their expressive journey with visits to galleries all over the world. “We both work in a loose, expressive style, with a wide and unencumbered colour palette that reflects our joyous and optimistic view of life,” says Marion. Mel says that art plays an important role in the lives of both ladies. “We are also bound by our combined passion to keep developing as artists and grow in our skill and creative capacity through a r t i s t i c ex p re s s i o n ,” she says. “The exhibition promises to delight, inspire and move the viewer. There will be fantastic sunsets, glorious landscapes, still life and brilliant light set against deep, raw colours of the earth.” Two Views is open daily from 10am to 3pm until midday, Wednesday, April 6, at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai. ¢

PLAN TO BE WARM AND COSY

11

Daylight savings checklist u by Andy Bryenton

The end of daylight savings is a great reminder that the seasons are changing, and as they do, it’s time to take care of those chores that are best sorted before winter comes calling. Around the house, it’s time to set the clocks back an hour on Sunday, April 3. Moreover, it’s also a timely reminder to check your smoke alarms, as winter is the season for fires, hot home-cooked meals. It’s, statistically, a time for accidents that could lead to house fires if those batteries are not in good order. It’s also a good idea to check the weathertightness of your windows and doors about now, as cold gusts and draughts begin creeping in during the evenings. Rattly window panes may leak or let out precious heat during winter, and doors and frames that don’t quite seal are an invitation to cold and dampness. Your local glazier can help make things right and ready. By now, those with wood fires will likely have a well-seasoned pile of firewood stacked away, but ordering soon is a must to avoid a rush if you rely on a supplier. There’s other work for your chainsaw, too. Branches that look like they may come down in a storm, whole trees with dead or unstable aspects,

and foliage that could strike buildings or power lines should be lopped off, chipped and otherwise removed about this time of year before winter storms. It’s time to bring out the winter blankets that can be made fresh and fluffy again by your local dry cleaner. Some households will also be making the switch from regular to thermal curtains that may also need some care and attention before they are hung up for the winter. The final thing to check around daylight savings time is your car or motorcycle; dark mornings, long nights and slippery wet roads mean that a good checkup of suspension, lighting and tyres is a must for safe motoring. With all of the boxes checked off and your winter wardrobe brought to the fore, it’s time to enjoy the good things about being warm and cosy for the colder months. Hot chocolate in front of the fire, warming winter roast dinners, homemade soup, crisp, starry nights and long evenings with good company. ¢

April 1 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

p Glenn has been involved with rescuing and caring for dogs since he was a child and also worked alongside the SPCA in Auckland

Creative and practical u by Ann van Engelen

Glenn and Kellie Border came up with their Pawderlands Doggy Daycare idea as a way to reinvent themselves during the recent music industry downturn. “Being loving dog owners ourselves, we saw the need for a safe, affordable and conveniently located doggy daycare facility,” says Glenn. “We are giving dogs, and their owners in the Waipū Cove to Ruakākā area much needed dog daycare services. “My background is in entertainment lighting for shows. I began working with bands in New Zealand and Australia back in the 70s and 80s. I have been shut down for two years due to the Covid

time ago — it is a great alternate income stream and fulfils a community need.” Glenn has worked alongside musicians such as Toto, The Exponents, Dave Dobbyn, Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo. “I went to England and worked alongside Sir Paul McCartney for four years doing his world tours, and I have also worked with lots of Kiwi artists. “Enter tainment lighting and production management is my thing, like

and the lights come on, and it all works, it is amazing. “Car launches and fashion shows are also events I help produce. Seeing people enjoy themselves makes all the hard work that much more enjoyable. “I get a huge amount of satisfaction from my career and still deal with a few private clients for events. There is a lot of travel with a bunch of different people and artists that you connect with. It is a really cool job, and the industry has

The dogs can choose a couch indoors to make themselves comfortable when they want to rest situation and was looking at all sorts of different things to start a business to reinvent myself. “My wife Kellie came up with the dog daycare idea as I needed something to focus on and turn into success until the music industry can revive. She knew it would be something I would absolutely love because of how much I love dogs. “I ran with it, and it came together quite easily. I should have done it a long

the Rhythm and Vines festival, which I managed for 13 years. “The Waipū Art N Tartan is one of my favourite local events along with the Rock N Rod car show, but they were cancelled this year due to restrictions.” Glenn also ran the lighting at the Powerstation nightclub in Auckland and is the lighting director and production manager for The Pink Floyd Experience. “I design light shows from scratch, and when the start button is pushed,

an exciting atmosphere. Having a dog daycare is a great alternative that fits well with me. “There is definitely a need for this facility in the Waipū/Ruakākā community. I want to create a strong brand that I can leave in the capable hands of trained staff when the entertainment industry returns. “Pawderlands is based at 4 Mountfield Road, Waipū. It is created around a large shed that is fully insulated and freshly

p The Pink Floyd Experience, the Art N Tartan fashion show and the Rock N Rod Carshow in Waipū are three of the projects Glenn is involved in through his lighting business

p Glenn has set up Pawderlands as a facility for owners of dogs of all sizes and ages to be able to leave their dog for the day, knowing it will have a stimulating and fun time

We are really excited. It is a change of pace from the music and event industry for now, but I have always been a dog person. Growing up on a farm, I have rescued many dogs in my life painted. We provide full-time observation of all dogs in our care and know-how important and loved they are. Security is paramount, and we have gone to great lengths to make our site escape-proof. “The dogs can choose a couch indoors to make themselves comfortable when they want to rest.” Glenn has created a metal driveway with parking spaces and signs at the end of the road pointing people in the right direction to the facility. “There is also a pick up and drop off service available from the Waipū Cove to Ruakākā area by arrangement. “The property has an indoor puppy land and a separate outdoor area for the smaller dogs. Each dog will be in the right area, so both dog and owner are happy. They will be constantly supervised, and if I see a little dog that likes playing with the big dogs, I will facilitate that. “Of course, the smaller and more delicate breeds have their own separate play and relax areas away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger robust dogs. “I have made a bunch of interactive platforms, tyres, swings, ramps and paddling pools for the animals to enjoy.

“Generally, dogs play together in groups with interactive toys like a sandpit, platforms and tyres on ropes. “I find with my dogs that if they have a piece of rope or a tyre, they run around with it together and wear themselves out. “The whole Pawderland facility is about giving dogs a treat. It is like dogs socialising together and running around with new and old friends at the beach. “Pawderlands is well-drained, and dogs of all ages have fun. If an older dog wants to lay on a couch for the day and relax, that is fine too. “The more information that we are given from an owner, the better it is because then we know exactly what their pet likes and doesn’t like, or any quirks it might have. “We are only a maximum five-minute drive to two veterinarians if, for any reason, one of the dogs needs attention. “We are really excited. It is a change of pace from the music and event industry for now, but I have always been a dog person. Growing up on a farm, I have rescued many dogs in my life. “I was connected to the SPCA in Auckland and have constantly had

K9s on my property. They connect with me, and I with them, so it seems to be a logical step forward by taking on the project. “I enjoy the unconditional love that dogs show you. They are very loyal and enjoy cuddles and being with their people. They love you no matter what. “Every day when you walk in from work, they show affection and loyalty and I believe it is important to give them the same in return. “When you take a dog to the beach, it is very rare to see aggression with others as it is neutral ground, but still approach the owner first if you don’t know them. “They generally crouch down and look at each other, asking if their friend wants to play. If they are a bit scared, they run away or lay down and show their tummy to submit to the other dogs. “It is all about being in a neutral place that no one has any ownership of. It is when you bring a dog into another dog’s environment that they naturally protect their owners and their property. “It is important to know that when you are out and about and approach a

dog you don’t know, always be cautious and talk to the owner first before interacting in case there are issues. Also, don’t let your dog wander from you for safety reasons. “Teaching children not to run up to dogs is also important because if they get a fright or are not as social as others, the child could get bitten if the animal tries to defend itself. “We officially opened on Monday, March 28, and it was a fantastic day. Bookings and lots of information are available at Pawderlands.com or on the Pawderlands Doggy Day Care Facebook page. “You can also book in for a dog wash and have a coffee while I wash the dog at the bathing station. “We are here for the community to look after their dogs on a daily basis. I know what it is like to want a place where I could drop my dogs off so they can have a good day out. “Kelly and I decided it is about time there was a place like Pawderlands in the Waipū/Ruakākā area, and we are so glad we pursued the idea.” ¢

Treasure at the Dargaville Museum

“The gumdigger shanty covered with gum sacks in the George and John Sutich Gumdiggers Hall brings back early childhood memories for me in the Houhora area,” says museum volunteer Nick Puharich. “In Waihopo, our shanty had a corrugated iron fireplace for cooking food in a camp oven and also to keep the shanty warm. “My dear mother told the story of being married in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland, in 1928 and travelling to the Far North by boat from Onehunga to the Awanui River. “Then they travelled on to the gumfields in Waihopo by horse and dray for their honeymoon! “On arrival at the gum camp, which included a number of shanties, Dad tells his bride: ‘We have arrived’, and points to his shanty. “Mum looks at the shanty and casually asks: ‘But Marino, where is the house?’ “It was a good question as she had lived in a two-storied stone house in Dalmatia. She was totally shocked and could not believe the shanty was to be her new home. “When Marino again pointed to the shanty, her quick reply was: ‘But Marino, where is the real house?’ When she realised the shanty was to be her new home, she cried, thinking she had made a big mistake! “Still, she coped and survived and made the best of a different time and place.” ¢
