Circus is coming to town

u by Ann van Engelen

Working with Circus Kumarani and Circability in Auckland, Lisa Lu and the team will be at the Celtic Barn and Coronation Hall in Waipū teaching youth circus tricks. “We are bringing the Youth Circus Festival to Waipū on May 13, 14 and 15. It is a free event for youth between 12 and 24 years old,” says Lisa. “I will be working with Mark from Circability. Circus Kumarani is based in Dargaville, and Thomas Hinz established both circuses. Thomas now focusses on Circability in Auckland, and I am the Northland coordinator for Kumarani. “I was born in Germany and studied social work. I came to do an internship at Kumarani and stayed. I have found I can cross over social work with circus work and love it. “Circus training helps you cope with things in life, and both organisations also teach people with special needs to encourage and lift them up. “It is a bit like when life is wobbling — you can liken it to balancing on a wire. You have to be able to put up with the wobble until it settles. “From using spinning plates, juggling, hula hooping and acrobats, circus skills help people gain confidence. “I have been involved in circus since I was 10 years old, and I am now 31. When other children played soccer and whatever, I chose circus, and my hobby turned into a profession.”

p Juggling and managing the tightrope, along with acrobats, are all part of the circus fun

p From 12 years old, children can be a part of the Circus Kumarani and Circability events

For the Waipū event, people need to register at circability.org/youth-circusfestival. Families can register as well if a parent needs to come along. “Those who attend get to connect with the wider community of youth with the same interests as they discover new skills. “It is a festival, and eventually, we want youth to run it. We have a group called circus.us. It is youth representatives from different organisations and they give us input into what we could be doing. “There will be two shows on the Friday at 7pm, and they will be really exciting as the instructors will show off their skills. The shows are open to the public, and we ask for a koha. On the Saturday, youth from Auckland and Northland

already practising circus will show off their skills at 7pm. The festival will be at the Coronation Hall and Celtic Barn in Waipū. “A big part of the event is researching what is happening at present with pathways for Youth in New Zealand within the circus. We want to define the pathways so people have the information they need if they want to live for the circus as an art sector. “I haven’t regretted joining at all, it is a great challenge, and there are so many possibilities. You can perform, teach, clowning or acrobats and help produce shows. The opportunities are endless, and there is something for everyone.” ¢

Unity at Easter hunt u by Ann van Engelen

The first Northern Helping Hands Easter Egg Hunt saw friends and families enjoy a sunny day whilst hunting for Easter treasure at the Wellsford War Memorial Park. “After a weather worrying start to the week, Wellsford turned on a super sunny day for the first Easter Egg Hunt Event,” says organiser Libby Clews. “An estimated 1,200 people came through on the day, with all children getting an array of eggs in different sizes. “The big surprise was the Easter Bunny arriving at 10.30am and giving out crème eggs. The Easter Bunny was swamped by enthusiastic children for the full hour.

“The egg cashiers handed out 4,500 eggs from the hunt, and we distributed the remainder across the volunteers and children. “The library was busy reading stories, making bubbles, and the badge maker was really popular. Almost every child had fire service and police stickers on them as well. “It was a great way for the emergency services to connect with residents. The major spot prize of

There were many freebies and prizes given out with McDonald’s vouchers, toothbrushes, socks, sunglasses and more. “Harrison Photography took photos, and the bouncy castles were a fabulous hit thanks to Full Noise Bouncy Castles. Mr Whippy made more than 300 ice creams, and our Henna artist always had at least 20 people queued for art.

The volunteers were all reliable, proactive and personable, and they made the event a success. “We couldn’t have done it without our amazing sponsors who paid for the eggs, subsidised food and coffee, bought supplies, loaned us gear, and so much more.

“It made me happy to see so many locals from Wellsford and neighbouring communities join together. There were many hugs, smiles and a lot of laughs. “Even after the event finished, children were still getting ice creams and playing at the park. I really hope this increases the patronage of such a great facility.” Attendee Lisa Weber said: “Everyone’s been through a lot these past few years, so this event brought us all together and was just what the community needed.

“I am grateful my children have an organisation like Nor thern Helping Hands in their community so they can experience awesome activities and events that add to their childhood.” Attendee Ashleigh Tipene said: “The event brought us together as a community.” One long-standing Wellsford resident was noted as saying that he had not seen so many people at War Memorial Park in a decade. ¢

Through students’ eyes u by Ann van Engelen

Rodney College students in Year 11 visited the Poor Knights Islands recently as part of their research studies. “We had been researching on the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve and local surrounds for a unit on sustainability,” says student William Clapham. “By 8am, we had left school and headed to Dive Tūtūkākā, with anticipation building. We completed the paperwork and motored off for the 45-minute boat ride to the islands. “The autumn air was crisp — the water was clear, smooth and a stunning deep blue. Spotting the Poor Knights in the distance, we could see the morning sun glinting off the bright white cliffs. “Starting with a tour of the reserve, we cruised to the Pinnacles and Sugarloaf islands where sheer cliffs plunge from high above, to deep below the rich waters. Among the plentiful wildlife we were privileged to see was one of New Zealand’s big oceanic gannet colonies, along with our first glimpse of the sleek New Zealand fur seals, torpedoing through the water and basking in the sun. “Motoring to the actual Poor Knights 10 minutes away, the crew’s

commentary told of the amazing environment. “The islands were forged from a 25km wide volcanic caldera and are now the guardians of spectacular archways, caves and rock formations formed during the area’s violent geological past. “With this fiery era now long forgotten, the islands are home to the largest pōhutukawa forest in the world and much unique wildlife. “Thousands of tuatara are scattered among the islands, while giant wētā and giant centipedes inhabit the leafy forest floors. “Below water is another, even more, complex ecosystem. At this time of year it is beautifully warm, with crystal clear visibility of up to 50m. “The array of fish species was too vast to describe but included scores of colourful trevally, snapper, scorpionfish, kingfish, blue maomao and rays. “I spent hours marvelling at the sheer diversity and abundance. We reboarded the boat and completed our

tour around the islands. We learned about the hapū of Ngātiwai that used to inhabit the islands many years ago and their application of kaitiakitanga stewardship. “Before crossing back to the mainland, we were privileged to go inside the biggest sea cave in the world — Rikoriko Cave, where live concerts have been played by famous New Zealand artists. “On the way back, we were surrounded by masses of dolphins. It was spectacular as they frolicked around us in their watery element.

“I felt a surge of happiness that numbers of these stunning creatures still exist and are not just something we read about in science textbooks. “We waved goodbye to them and headed home. It was one of the best days I have ever had. The natural beauty and awesomeness of the Poor Knights has left me enthralled. “The trip has really made me want to look after our little island nation and its remarkable natural beauty and ruggedness all the more.” ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Works of grace u by Liz Clark

Anyone would think being so far south of the equator nothing remotely tropical-looking would grow in New Zealand — enter the nīkau. It’s referred to as the world’s most southerly palm ranging from the Kermadec Islands, to the New Zealand mainland and down to Chatham and Pitt Islands. Māori utilised nīkau for many uses. The bases of the inner leaves and the young flower clusters were eaten raw or cooked. Food was wrapped in the leaves for cooking, and the old fibrous leaves were used for kete, floor mats and waterproof thatch for buildings. When the Europeans arrived in the early 19th century, nīkau fronds were used to provide temporary shelter until more permanent structures could be built.

With its upright fronds emerging from a bulbous crown shaft and ringed trunk, the three subspecies of Rhopalostylis will make a statement in the garden either displayed in pots or set as a centrepiece in a courtyard or more extensive setting. The mainland nīkau is slow growing, reaching up to a height of 15 metres or more. The Kermadec and Chatham variants are faster growing than their mainland cousin. They are now proving more popular with landscape designers for integrating into urban gardens. All three types still require good conditions for optimum growth.

When planting in pots, use a good quality potting mix and keep out of strong winds and frost-prone areas. Young palms are vulnerable to frost burn and can easily be damaged. Keep your plants regularly watered during the summer months and out of direct sunlight. Nīkau palms in general are best kept in partial shade to prevent the fronds from being burned by the midday sun. When planting in the garden, ensure the plants used have well-established firm fronds formed. Ideally, they should be around 30cm or more in length. Choose a site where larger trees can protect them from the elements. Apply

regular dressings of blood and bone to encourage moderate growth. The Kermadec nīkau has broader leaves and a more open crown than the Chathams and mainland varieties. It is less frost tolerant than the Chatham subspecies. The Chathams is the fastest growing of the three palm types and the most tolerant of coastal and lowtemperature situations. The mainland species is better suited for container growing or regeneration projects on farms and lifestyle blocks. All three varieties are available at garden centres or search online for more information. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE

Know your housing needs u by Amy Fifita

Should you build or renovate? Many housing situations will bring up this question across many situations. You could be welcoming a new life into this world or letting an older family member stay with you and need to upsize. You might need to downsize because your children have grown and left home. You could be entering the housing market. So, what is there to consider? If you want to build, you can choose the aesthetics and practicality of your house suited to you. It is your house on your terms; however, it comes with a cost. A plus is that a new build may help create lower maintenance costs depending on your designs. There is less risk in building a new home. You can have a team of experienced professionals to guide you through the building process — an advantage new builds bring. However, the sacrifice for this requires time designing your dream house, waiting for building consent and the building itself. Human error may occur and need to be fixed — resulting in more time spent. Your needs might change over time also. In newer subdivisions, you will not always know who your neighbours will

be and where they might build. Imagine designing an outside area with a large deck overlooking the ocean, only to have a new neighbour intrude your view with a tall two-storey house. What would that do to the resale value too? Renovating, on the other hand, may be easier for people who want the bones of a project already there. Homeowners who have entered the market may buy a house at a decreased price in need of work. The general layout is already in place, so that may restrict what you can do. Load-bearing walls can be removed at a higher cost than non-load-bearing walls and the price increases according to the levels of your house. Working around these walls may be a better option for people with their wallets in mind. You have the option to do the work yourself and potentially source cheaper materials from your local market. Some renovations have been known to cost more than a new build. That with higher expected maintenance costs for existing houses are factors to consider. Another thing to consider is whether your renovations add to the resale value

p If you are deciding whether you want to build or renovate there are factors to consider before you commit to your choice

or add to your taste and at what cost? Putting more capital into the project than what the returns will be may be viewed as an ill investment. It might be best to look at your options and your situations. What

are your needs? What are factors to consider that will affect the house in the future? Is this your last house or a step in the journey? Then make the decision that best fits you. ¢

Working with make-up is like any art, but the canvas happens to be the face and is living of Dramatic Art drama school, where people like Russell Crowe went. “NIDA is the best drama school in the Southern Hemisphere, and through theatre, I began my career with make-up, which worked hand in hand. “In 1991, I worked at the Clinique counter at Grace Brothers, which is now Myer, and I was poached to work on the MAC cosmetics counter. “I spent five years working for MAC and became a special events artist for the company, and fell into the world of fashion. I worked for Australian Fashion Week and designed

“As a performer, I worked in London’s West End performing in Les Miserables on Broadway, Australia, and Dubai in 2005. I played three leads in the West End, including Marius and Javier in Les Miserables. “I hadn’t done make-up for a while as I had taken a break, and when I hit New York, I dived back into make-up artistry. “I got a position with the Polish brand Inglot Cosmetics and worked on their counter as a survival job in Times Square. “I love their make-up and became the creative director looking after five countries. Mr Inglot was extremely

I did shoots with artists such as Avril Lavigne, Hilary Barry, Tina Arena and Christina Aguilera. Pharrell Williams and I would create the look for new artists at the event. “Pharrell is an American rapper, record producer, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Avril has her own clothing

I don’t want people to cover themselves up, but it was great to give them the skills to cover things like birthmarks when they want line, Abbey Dawn, and I did the make-up for her at a fashion show. “When I was in New York, I helped create a lot of products. For example, when the Cavalia horse circus was travelling around, they showed me what make-up look they wanted. “I would go to our colour wall and blend the colours to get what they needed, and add waterproofing if necessary. Our laboratory would then create the product. “A lot of the products I made for Inglot are still around. I had a lot of fun working for the company — it was very fulfilling. “Make-up is my creative expression. It is transformative and you can transform yourself into whoever you want to be. That was the initial appeal to me. For me now it is the expression of oneself. “I enjoy working with clients because everyone has something beautiful about them. We can focus on one thing or many things. “Applied correctly, make-up distracts from something, and you can train the eye to focus on whatever you want it to. “Working with make-up is like any art, but the canvas happens to be the face and is living. “I remember showing a girl who was born with a port-wine stain on

her face how to cover it as she was very conscious. “I don’t want people to cover themselves up, but it was great to give them the skills to cover things like birthmarks when they want. “I grew up with very bad pimply skin myself, so I am able to sympathise with others. To give people the tools to cover over skin issues if they want is a privilege to me. “Make-up is for everyone. If you liked art class at school, then you will love the creativity of make-up. “I have all of my favourite products in my kit. It contains a little bit of everything that has worked for me over the years. “I use whatever I want, and that is very liberating. I am not restricted to one specific brand. I know what works the best for me, and that can change as well because new products are constantly becoming available. “I enjoy going to Sephora in Auckland and experimenting with new makeup products. I recently went to see what Rhiannon has brought out, and I purchased four coloured liquid eyeliners. “They are yellow, pink, blue and green and really outrageous but very cool. I used them for a music video shot at Piha. I paint with them and do intricate

graphic designs when they are wet. I also blend colours together. “You can apply foundation with your fingers, a brush or make-up sponge. They are all as important as each other.” “I tell people for an everyday look to mix in a little moisturiser and foundation for a sheer coverage. Don’t bother powdering because you want a natural dewy glow. “Use a little mascara and a bronzer for eyes, cheeks and lips for a monochromatic touch of colour. “Ultimately, it is about creative expression. As teenagers, we are finding out who we are. We want to scream as loud as we can, to show people who we are, and we can do that with make-up. “I tell people, whatever colour you are into, dive into it. You don’t need to be risque or overly sexualised. It is not about that — it is about creative expression. “As a teenager, I used a concealer to cover my acne. Now concealers come with acne treatment in them, such as peroxide or salicylic acid, which increases your cellular turnover. “Salicylic acid is found in willow bark and is exfoliating, which helps the pimples heal while covered. “I am very grateful for the opportunities that came my way, as I work freelance.

“I am about to work with Tina Arena in Australia again this June when I will be performing at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. I will then be in Sydney to direct the Australian Premier of Jekyll and Hyde the musical. “I was in Manilla working on the musical Matilda when Covid hit. It was the first city in the world to lock down, and we had two days to clear out. “I flew from Manila to Abu Dhabi, on to New York, then to New Jersey, Vancouver and on to Auckland. It was far from direct and took three days getting me here just before New Zealand locked down to international travellers. “I went into isolation for two weeks and was out for two days when the whole country went into lockdown. “When theatres closed, I was able to adapt and teach makeup online from here in Waipū. I also built a tiny house during that time which I love. “I am looking forward to meeting more amazing people who want to experiment with make-up as well. People can find me at Haydentee.Makeup on Facebook or Instagram. “I have a wonderful career, and am very grateful for the experiences I have had but am very excited to be home living a relaxed lifestyle with my whānau.” ¢

The Waipū Golf Club was established 88 years ago, and as the sport makes a resurgence around the country, the club is continuing to improve its course. “We are in the midst of establishing The Friends of Waipū Golf Club Inc,” says club media manager Doug Gordon. “We need to raise significant monies to irrigate the fairways and make continued course improvements. The club is steeped in a long history that

consisted of three different sites before permanently residing at its current location. “Our forefathers could only dream of what was to become of this historic club in the 21st century. “The club started its humble beginnings with a conversation during a tennis match at the Waipū Caledonian park. This was formalised by Duncan McKay, who decided it was time Waipū had a golf club. “The first site officially opened on April 28 1934, at AW McKay’s farm. It was a short nine-hole course, which lasted one year. “It then moved to Rod McAulay’s farm north of the Waipū river. This course was split by the then State Highway One — although traffic was scarce, it didn’t matter. “Club patron Dick Pivac remembers seeing Don and Miri McKay looking for a lost ball in the bushes on the side of the road while travelling home on the school bus. Such was the nature of the times. “The club moved to Murdoch Mclean’s farm on the Brynderwyns in 1954. In 1959 the first letter was sent to the Crown for a proposal to lease unused

dune land on the coast between Waipū and Ruakākā. “This took several years and was finally agreed upon due to the persistence of local MP Don McKay and, apparently, a gifted bottle of whiskey. “The club committee enlisted the services of course designer HG Babbage.

He created an 18-hole layout very similar to the course we play today. “At first, they could only manage nine holes to be sculpted. On June 6 1966, the course opened at the current location, and they completed all 18 holes in 1978. “The club purchased the land outright in 1983. This came about due to the extensive pipeline being laid between

Auckland and the Marsden Point Refinery, of which the golf club was in its path. “As part of the negotiation, a price was agreed upon with a discount for the proposed pipelines use of the land. Since then, the club has been a freehold owner of its grounds. Alex Glasgow was enlisted to redesign the course layout in 1997, and this is the layout we play today.” The course is currently listed in the top 50 courses in New Zealand. “We hope to make it a top ten course within the next two years” says club manager Peter Spiers. “The current irrigation upgrade project will see state-of-the-art watering on all 18 fairways of the course. “This year will be the 88th anniversary, which consists of an anniversary tournament along with Scottish dancers, bagpipes and a local entertainer to keep the festivities going after the match. “This will be held on Saturday, April 30, in tradition with our very first opening day tournament in 1934, on April 28. “The event is showcased by cart maker EZGO, offering two $400 cash prizes for closest to the pin. Everyone is welcome to join in on the festive day.” ¢
