THE MASONIC VILLAGES TRUST
The organisation has grown year upon year, with new volunteers, vehicles and resources joining in to make this one of the Kaipara’s charitable success stories. Countless citizens have benefitted from their generosity, and there’s little doubt that their efforts have saved lives. Karl, a spokesman for the literally ‘volunteerdriven’ service, explains the humble beginnings of today’s organisation. “Linking Hands was set up in 2004 by Mavis McCombie and Jayne King. Eight years before, in 1996, Mavis served as a nurse at Dargaville hospital and saw a need for getting information on available services to people who were caring for a family member at home. She also saw a need to educate people in the home care situation, as patients were being sent home too early, still needing nursing care.” Mavis and Jayne shared a strong Christian faith. With this motivation as well as a desire to serve their community, they became determined to do something. It was the Kaipara
“
Community Trust that provided the first van, setting the ball rolling. “They began in their home town of Maungaturoto, but soon spread throughout the Kaipara region,” says Karl. “The focus began to shift to where the need was most apparent; transferring people unable to drive, to healthcare appointments.” Maureen Davis led Linking Hands Incorporated from 2008 onwards. She made an incalculably valuable contribution for several years until she stepped down from leadership and sadly passed away. Thanks to the legacy of these founders, Linking Hands is going strong today with eight cars and a varying pool of about twenty volunteer drivers. Karl says that the cost of responding to 202 pickups each month runs to more than $20,000 in fuel alone, not to mention thousands of volunteer hours. “We are still reliant on donations to keep the wheels turning,” he says. “So, if you feel ‘motor-vated’ to lubricate the gears of Linking Hands — donations are always gratefully received.” ¢

This week’s annual Kaipara Citizen’s Awards spelt good news for Mangawhai, with two locals taking home accolades for their civic spirit. Award winners Bert Sainsbury and Vanessa Fulton were honoured, as the official certificate reads: ‘In recognition of outstanding leadership, contribution and commitment to the wellbeing of the citizens of the Kaipara and to this place’. They shared the awards stage with west coast winner Brian Burnett, in a ceremony at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville on Tuesday. Mayor Jason Smith presided over the event alongside Kaipara District Council CEO Louise Miller. “Today is a very special day and a highlight of the year for your council, said Dr Smith. “It’s also a wonderful privilege for myself as mayor to be able to present these awards. Vanessa Fulton was nominated for her engagement with many sporting and educational enterprises in Mangawhai, including her tireless support for the sport of netball and the assistance she gives to students of Mangawhai Beach Primary School. Singled out for special praise was Vanessa’s long-term commitment to surf lifesaving, both as a member of
“
the Mangawhai Heads Surf Life Saving Club and as the leader of the local junior surf programme. Bert Sainsbury was applauded for three decades of selfless community work in and around Mangawhai. He was hailed as the driving force behind many of the big construction projects which have reshaped civic life in the town. Bert was involved in the construction of Mangawhai’s senior citizens’ hall, museum and historical village, as well as the Mangawhai Beach School Community Gymnasium. Locals confirm that there are many more community projects in the Mangawhai and Tomarata areas, which have benefitted from his determination and good attitude during the years. Both of these Mangawhai recipients, and Mr Burnett for Dargaville, were awarded commemorative plaques, bouquets and kauri seedlings. Mayor Smith explained that the kauri, Kaipara’s natural taonga, is a fitting metaphor for the strength and longevity of community spirit, which grows from small seeds to bring forth greatness. ¢

Think twice about turtles u by Liz Clark
Those cute tiny turtles you buy as pets seem harmless enough until they become adults and a threat to the environment if released.
p Northland Regional Council asks residents to contact them immediately if an unconfined redeared slider turtle is found
Red-eared slider turtles have been in Kaipara for some years; kept as pets after being bought from pet shops as tiny hatchlings. According to the Northland Regional Council, however, adult red-eared slider turtles are a genuine threat to Kaipara and Northland’s environment as a whole. The turtles are small as hatchlings; their shells being no more than four centimetres long. The adults, on the other hand, grow to a shell length of up to 30 centimetres and can weigh one kilogram. The shell is olive to brown with yellow spots, stripes and they have a distinctive red stripe

behind each eye. With a lifespan of 30 years, the red-eared slider is a long-term commitment for pet owners. The turtles are omnivorous eating a vast range of plants, frogs, crustaceans, insects, birds and small reptiles in the wild. The NRC has placed red-eared slider turtles on its list of freshwater pests. Adult turtles are a threat to other species and are noted as one of the most invasive introduced reptiles globally. Tax-deductible entertainment expenses u by Corinne Smith, Altitude Advisors Ltd, director and chartered accountant
I thought it would be topical this month to comment on what is tax-deductible for entertainment due to staff Christmas functions and celebrations happening this month. Here is a summary of what you can deduct and a few examples. If you want to know more detail on this, visit ird.govt.nz/income-tax/incometax-for-businesses-and-organisations/ types-of-business-expenses/ entertainment-expenses. 100% deductible Entertainment expenses will be 100% deductible and not liable for FBT if they’re completely business-related. This includes: • meals an employee buys while travelling on business • food and drink provided at a conference, education course or similar event that lasts at least four hours • light meals provided in a dining room for senior managers and consumed as part of their duties • entertainment that promotes your business • entertainment that is only a secondary part of either a function that is open to the public or any trade display • freebies promoting your business • entertainment provided to someone who’s going to review it for publication (such as giving a free meal to food critics) • entertainment provided at a discount, if your business regularly provides entertainment at market prices (for example, offering halfprice meals at your restaurant) • entertainment enjoyed outside of New Zealand 50% deductible Entertainment expenses will be 50% deductible and not liable for FBT if they are not entirely business-related. That
includes entertainment that is away from work or out of usual working hours, so it has a ‘significant private element’. The expense will be 50% deductible even if you think the private element was more or less than 50%. Examples of this include: • entertainment at sports or cultural events (for example, a corporate box) • business use of a holiday home • hiring a boat, and providing food and drink to people on it • food and drink you provide for social events or in an area set aside for senior employees • gifts of food and drink that benefit your business and are enjoyed privately by the person who receives them • ‘supporting expenses’ for other entertainment that’s 50% deductible, such as hire of wine glasses and wait staff for a party 100% deductible and liable for FBT Entertainment expenses will be 100% deductible and liable for FBT if they are received by employees because of the work they do. Examples of this include rewards for good performance, such as a restaurant gift voucher or weekend away. Lastly, during your summer break, you may be reflecting on what your plans are for next year. Jot things down, and be ready to create some budgets and do some planning around those ideas to get you started. Thoughts and dreams become a reality, so choose the good ones and take action. Our team would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season. ¢

Eco champions recognised u by Andy Bryenton
Last Tuesday saw the inaugural presentation of the Kaipara Environment Awards, a formal recognition of the work volunteers and organisations put in to assist in protecting and nurturing the natural world around us. Four winners were presented with certificates of appreciation at a ceremony presided over by the mayor and Kaipara District councillors. Mayor Jason Smith opened proceedings by praising the work of fellow council member, and passionate environmental advocate Victoria de la Varis-Woodcock, who he revealed was the driving force behind the inception of these awards. “There are so many people in our area doing wonderful things for the environment,” said Mayor Smith. “Their input and effort need to be recognised.” Councillor de la Varis-Woodcock agreed, calling the inaugural awards “the beginning of a new era for our council and for our rohe (region).” She noted that awards such as these exist in many nations and societies around the world, promoting and celebrating environmental custodianship. First awarded were Allister and Maree McCahon, who were recognised for environmental action in the community for their efforts in wetlands regeneration and mass riparian planting. The couple works with the Pouto Peninsula Dune Lake Catchment Group and have raised

consciousness about the input of farmers in riparian planting for water quality. They were allied with another group of award recipients, the students from Dargaville Intermediate School’s native plant nursery, who established their nursery in 2011, with many years of students helping raise indigenous flora from seed to seedling. Dargaville’s Maxine Stringer received
an environment award for her efforts in making Dargaville plastic bag free. The dedicated campaigner hand-sewed thousands of BYO bags for the Lead the Way campaign in the township, beginning in 2017. Today, single-use plastic bags are in noticeable and sharp decline. The final award went to the entire Te Roroa environmental organisation working hard to safeguard
the natural taonga of northern kauri forests, alongside a raft of other important environmental work. The Kaipara Environmental Awards is set to become an annual occurrence, with multiple categories honoured each year to recognise the input of outstanding citizens in the field of ecology and environmental preservation. ¢

Icing on the gardener’s cake u by Liz Clark
If there is a daisy that makes a bold statement, the head turner in the garden has to be the standout Australian-developed Federation daisy. Developed from the Marguerite daisy in New South Wales, Australia by the University of Sydney, the sun-loving Federation daisy has become an international best-seller for the floriculture industry. It’s a popular and soughtafter addition to lovers of both flowers and daisies. Its versatility, heat and mild frost tolerance as well the ability to bring dazzling colour makes it the perfect solution for any garden. The first consideration before planting is the soil. Good drainage is a must for the plants to thrive. Use plenty of compost, manure and other organic matter to provide the right environment for your plants to thrive. The secret of good growth is always in the soil. Once the plants are placed in their final positions, add a layer of good-quality mulch to retain moisture during prolonged summer dry periods. Plants that are moisture-stressed have yellowing of the leaves in the centre of the bush and can look unsightly. Liquid feeding ensures your daisies remain vigorous and blooming throughout the growing season. For container planting, choose a good-quality container mix and mulch the surface to prevent the soil surface from drying out too quickly on very hot days.
Watering should be done in the early morning or in the evening to prevent leaf burn. Place around your entrance area and paths to bring a welcoming splash of colour for friends and family. Pruning should be done lightly and only as necessary. Overall Federation daisies are an easy-care, no-fuss way to have colour without all the hard work of higher-maintenance plants. Mingle your daisies with roses, lavender, annuals, herbs and even as an added extra bit of colour for the edges of your vegetable garden. The only limit is the gardener’s imagination. Colour coordinate or grow just one favourite shade to create a carnival of living colours attracting bees and butterflies as well as other beneficial insects. Make a setting formal with containers or informal such as a rambling cottage garden style with winding paths and plantings. Cultivars are numerous. Some to look for and try for the garden and containers are Butterball, Double Act, Summersong Rose, Starlight Red, Carmine Supernova, Sugar Candy, Sugar Cheer, Sugar Lace, Sultans Pride and Summer Stars. Also try Sunrise Rose, Summer Angel, Sulemio, Sugar Crystals and Summersong Darkrose. All varieties can be found online or at your local nursery.

Giving is the best medicine u by Andy Bryenton
The staff at Dargaville’s hospital and medical centre have donated an ambulance-load of Christmas food, gifts and treats to the town’s food bank for the festive season, ensuring that families hard hit by Covid don’t miss out on a happy holiday. When Dargaville’s food bank made the call for assistance to the staff at the town’s hospital, it was an opportunity for the doctors, nurses, clinical staff and administrators to show that caring for the community goes beyond medical treatment. Jen Thomas, who helped organise the drive, picked a fresh way to ensure daily donations, and the boxes began to fill up as generous medics dug deep. “We organised the appeal as a reverse advent calendar,” says the Dargaville Hospital operations manager. Jen was beaming with pride for her team as the boxes were loaded up for transit. “Each day, everyone brought in something to add to the collection. They didn’t have to be asked twice. Even though we’ve worked through Covid, and been on the front lines, that made us more determined to give something to those less fortunate. This year has really made us all appreciate whanau and loved ones that bit more.” Food bank representatives John and Margaret were delighted by the bighearted gift from the hospital team, which came complete with teddy bears propped up in many of the boxes. When asked if the financial impact of the coronavirus lockdown had made
p Staff from the Dargaville Combined Churches Food Bank load up a mountain of holiday cheer, courtesy of the team at Dargaville Hospital
a dent in Dargaville, the food bank volunteers agreed that it had stretched finances, but it could never diminish their morale. “There are people out there who are struggling, and many of them are ashamed to admit it,” they said.
“There’s no need to be. People may be struggling with high rents and low incomes, but we are here to help. “This gift from the Dargaville hospital staff will go a long way to making sure local families have a merry Christmas.”
The parcels, which contain staple foods for the pantry as well as some Christmas treats and small gifts, will be delivered to needy families in both the town and country, carrying on a tradition of food bank generosity that lasts year-round. ¢

Greg and Cat spent a few years travelling and working in various employment situations before settling in Mangawhai and taking a new direction in life
Capturing wedding memories u by Ann van Engelen
Photographers Greg and Cat Campbell moved to their lifestyle block in Mangawhai eight years ago as a place to settle, call home and pursue their photography dream. “I started photography as a hobby after Cat and I finished studying at university. We became custodians of the university ski club at Mt Ruapehu and I got my first camera the day we moved there,” says Greg. “We lived there for a season and then moved to Calgary in Canada and lived the snowboarding lifestyle. We later moved to Tonga as some friends of Cat’s parents owned a fishing charter business on one of the small islands. It was an amazing experience with just a few families living on the island. All these places were great for honing my photography skills. “When we moved home to New Zealand I sold shade sails and we owned a small restaurant in Orewa. We then had a window glazing
business all the while I was doing hobby photography.” Cat was a science teacher and Greg then became a primary school teacher. “About 12 years ago some friends asked me to shoot their wedding. It was the typical ‘Oh Greg can you bring your camera?’ That was my first wedding
“
wanting photos with people in them. The first wedding experience motivated me to look at it more seriously and I then photographed weddings for a few other friends and never looked back. “Officially I only do weddings. It is quite an adrenaline rush as you need to be very well prepared and knowledgeable about photography and how weddings work, but also flexible. You go off for the day and your plans can change in an instant. You need to keep on your toes, it is quite a thrill. “You need to know the technical side of your camera very well because there is no time for trial and error. You deal with a vast variety of people and personalities, so communication and understanding is a huge part of the job. It has been a great

“
We have worked at a lot of venues now and try to find ways to make each wedding special lifestyle change. Every wedding season we work very hard on weekends and then do the editing during the week, but we get time off in winter. “For three years we did summer in New Zealand and then went chasing tornadoes in America. Chasing those big storms was my dream as a child and it was a great experience, but I was never able to take six weeks off over winter to get to the US. Tornado season begins in May so the New Zealand summer wedding season suits it perfectly and we have had some amazing adventures. “When people hire us for their wedding, we often hear that they are shy in front of the camera. We tell them not to think about having their photo taken, but to think of it as their special day being recorded. You don’t have to put on a show, just let us capture what
”
is happening and how happy they are. We gently guide the couple in finding a nice location and then give a little bit of guidance so the couple are feeling happy and more focussed on each other. We don’t want to add any extra stress so people can enjoy their day and get amazing photos as a bonus.” If unforeseen circumstances happen Greg and Cat work together with their clients to come up with a positive outcome. “We have worked at a lot of venues now and try to find ways to make each wedding special for each couple. We will sometimes knock on a farmer’s door to ask if we can use their land for a backdrop or search for that beach spot that no one’s ever been to. Some people are happy to have the ceremony and mingle with friends, have dinner and that is it. Others like to go
for a drive, or even take a helicopter off-site to find all kinds of places for their photos. “We always ask what type of look the clients want. Do you want a beachfront, vineyard, forest or maybe a rustic building? The venue doesn’t matter to us, we still aim to get beautiful photos even if it is a private residence. “This is my eighth season of weddings and Cat has been involved for five seasons. We decided she would come on board as she was looking for a change after nine years of teaching. When our house was getting built we really wanted to travel and went to Australia. “For a little while, I thought I could become a photographer there but was still getting a lot of enquiries in New Zealand. We made the decision to enjoy the holiday in Aussie then come
home and make a real go of wedding photography here in New Zealand. I didn’t go back to teaching upon our return. “That was the moment we wrote up the business plan, got serious about improving my website and learned a lot about design and SEO, and then took as many bookings as possible. For three years leading up to that, I had made a lot of excuses like ‘there are a lot of photographers already’ but we had to set our mind to just keep going. “We are really happy we made the move to Mangawhai. “The lifestyle is wonderful and is halfway between South Auckland and Kerikeri, which is in the middle of where I want to be for work. Kaipara is a great area for us and our little girl. When we are not working we have a beautiful place to live.” ¢

Connecting the kauri trail u by Andy Bryenton
The two halves of Kaiwaka have long been divided by the busy traffic of State Highway One. Soon they will be connected with overhead footbridges, thanks to a partnership between the council and central government. Funding was discussed and announced for a long-term goal of Kaiwaka locals this July, as Mayor Jason Smith, the KDC’s infrastructure leaders and then-current Minister for the Provincial Growth Fund Shane Jones fronted up to a crowd of supporters in Mangawhai. While Jones’ electoral fortunes faded, the newly dubbed Provincial Growth Unit has followed up on this promise, with new footbridges now in the design phase. “The council has been awarded $750,000 from the Provincial Development Unit to build bridges alongside SH1,” says the media spokesperson for the Kaipara District Council, in an invitation to the public to have their say on bridge placement. “In time the bridges will form part of the ancient kauri trail that will eventually go from the Hokianga, through Dargaville and Maungaturoto and extend out to Mangawhai.” From 4pm on Monday, December 14 locals can have their say about where the bridges will span SH1, as the KDC are on-site at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall for a drop-in liaison session. There are multiple options when it comes to how the structures will operate, how they will look and where they will be placed to optimise eastwest connectivity. Meanwhile, a smaller but equally important connection has been forged in Matakohe, as a large

together, a short walk or cycle away from where the planned ancient kauri trail passes by, on the axis of the new motorway bridges. This improvement to tourist access has been achieved in partnership
between the KDC and the Te Tai Tokerau redeployment package, an initiative launched to mitigate Covid-19 economic side-effects and get the region moving in the right direction. ¢

Named for a daughter

She was a lifeline for settlers, the scene of a tragic shooting, and named after one of the daughters of an entrepreneur. Back in 1875, the Minnie Casey was built on the North Shore, Auckland by Sims and Brown for Irishman Jeremiah Casey. On her first trial trip to Wairewa, a writer of the time noted: ‘The Minnie Casey is, without exception, the most successful boat yet built in Auckland, and reflecting the greatest credit on Messrs Sims and Brown, the builders. The passengers on board are all delighted with her.’ Powered by two 25hp engines, the vessel was used on the Auckland to Mahurangi run carrying passengers and goods. She was a fixture on the east coast until 1878 when Casey transferred her over to the Kaipara run in the west. She provided a vital service to the new settlements springing up around the inner harbour coastline. In the same year, William Colbeck’s Kaipara Steam Navigation Company started up in opposition. Colbeck offered a substantial sum to Casey to buy his
vessels, and the offer was accepted. By 1880, however, Colbeck’s company was running at a loss and measures were taken to sell off two uneconomic vessels, the Kina and Tongariro. In April 1883 the Minnie Casey collided with the brig Syren at Te Kopuru wharf. The subsequent enquiry resulted in the Syren being apportioned the blame for the incident. By the end of August 1883, the Kaipara Steamship Navigation Company board announced it was in trouble; debts were being called up, and desperate measures were taken. A decision was made to sell the company assets, including the vessels. In December of the same year, all vessels and assets were sold to the Northern River Steam Navigation Company. In December 1885 the Minnie Casey collided with the Tangihua off Beacon Point and sustained minor damage on the port bow. On July 30 1890, the vessel became a murder scene after

Constable Neil Mcleod was shot and killed by a gumdigger named Henry Funcke. Funcke had been removed from the steamer after causing trouble onboard. The captain had taken a rifle from the offender; however, Funcke had a concealed pistol, which was used to fire the fatal shots resulting in the first
death of a New Zealand policeman on active duty. Funcke was later found to be insane and was sent to an asylum. In 1899 the Minnie Casey was sold to Sandfords for use as one of the first fishing trawlers in the Hauraki Gulf. She remained in use until 1908 when she was laid up at Rakino Island and later sold then broken up in 1909. ¢
