“In the time of social media, and the wide dissemination of material that can often be from dubious and doubtful sources to the broadcast of often irrelevant material that is the way of the so-called mainstream media, our focus is firmly on the currents that drive local communities. Local news from politics, sports, entertainment, culture and myriad other facets of life that impact residents’ everyday lives,” says Integrity Community Media and Weekend Lifestyler publisher Allan Mortensen. “Through our pages, local business has a clear and important voice to connect with community members, and this, in turn, provides an economic stimulus that flows on to benefit the local area.”

Editor Deb Wright adds: “We consider all our readers to be a very important part of our team, who we are very proud to keep informed. 2023 has had its moments, that’s for sure, the Brynderwyns closed, floods and an economy that is far from healthy, but through all of this, we all keep boxing on and rising to the challenges, and in our pages, we like to highlight those accomplishments and thank you all for your wonderful stories. “As always, I would also like to thank our amazing writers, our fabulous sales team, our awesome administration staff and our very loyal readers. “Have an enjoyable festive season, and we will see you all again in 2024.” ¢

Winners for Christmas The Weekend Lifestyler’s big Christmas giveaway was won by a patron of a very appropriately named business for 2023. Barry Read entered the draw by shopping with Woody’s Winners in Wellsford, and thanks to the luck of the draw, he’s now got a big $500 holiday bonus to spend there. Thanks to all who participated in our Shop and Win promotion, helping support local businesses during the Christmas season.

p Pauline Wilson says volunteering at Hospice is one way that she can help the community

The joy of volunteering u by Ann van Engelen

Pauline Wilson is one community member who volunteers at the newly opened North Haven Hospice shop located at 41c Moir Street, Mangawhai. “My husband Brian and I moved here 12 years ago from Whangaparaoa for a quieter lifestyle,” says Pauline. “It’s a great area to live in. It’s friendly and easy to get about. You don’t have to go too far to do your shopping. Therefore, you can stay local and, of course, we have a great beach.” Pauline says she had time on her hands and decided to volunteer at the Hospice shop when she saw the team renovating the interior recently. “I have finished working and needed something to do because I like to get out and about and meet people. I saw the guys building the inside of the shop here

recently and popped my head in and asked if they were looking for volunteers, and the rest is history. “For me, it was a new opportunity to help other people. I love Hospice because the organisation is such a great community-focussed initiative, helping people who are coming to the end of their life. They look after you and your family very well. “We have known people who have used the services, and their families are very grateful for the help they provide. Being in the shop is lovely, and every penny made stays in the local community.

“People can bring their items in to us for donation and we share products between our other North Haven Hospice stores as well. That includes Whangārei, Waipu and our store. People who want to donate a house lot of furniture can call 09 438 1050. “I’d love to see other people join our team — it’s a great cause. They can come into the store and talk to us. Volunteering is so much fun. Everyone is helpful, we have a lot of laughs, and we’re always

busy. There was always room for another op shop here — there’s so much good to go around. “The management is great to work with, and if you don’t know something, you just ask. They have so much experience and know exactly what’s going on. “We are opposite Carters in Moir Street, Mangawhai. To me, time volunteering at the Hospice shop is definitely time well spent.” ¢

East Coast Now

An east coast playground u by Paul Campbell

Summertime is playground time for the eastern region when the burgeoning community of Mangawhai welcomes a huge influx of visitors, many making family connections to residents who have chosen to make the fast-growing seaside enclave their own. A focus in the town is the Mangawhai Central project, which was expected at its inception to almost double the population of the seaside village and boost the arrival of a New World supermarket and Bunnings Warehouse. Although development has somewhat slowed along with a general countrywide economic trend, Mangawhai is a popular

On the far side of the harbour is a large sand dune area home to many native birds, including the endangered fairy terns, and locals will be quick to advise visitors of this and precautions to take. The surf beach is complemented by Te Ārai, Langs Beach and Waipu Cove for surfing and swimming, beachcombing and simply making the most of the summer.

The Marsden Cove Marina Market is another summer attraction and thriving town with natural attractions of sea and coastline and Mangawhai Heads with its tranquil lagoon-style harbour and surf beach. The latter is well-patrolled by the active local surf club. That is backed up by boutique shops and services, galleries and cafes. Galleries, of course, are an operative indication that the town is home to a thriving arts community, with a number of arts-inspired activities on offer over summer in particular.

The town is an ideal base for activities, and the museum is a great place to get a look at its rich past as a pioneer highway into the wider Kaipara district. For the more energetic, perhaps take the Mangawhai Cliff Walk, a two to threehour jaunt, or shorter if you choose. Staying in town, the Mangawhai Village Market is a chance to sample some local flavours, maybe gourmet cheeses or rich chocolates. The east coast waters have a reputation as a fishing paradise, and

East Coast Now Games, a major town festival scheduled in the New Year. For a day out in the fresh air, try the Waipu Golf Club while the family might enjoy the village, which is renowned for its market, usually every second Sunday of the month with arts and crafts, food producers, cafes and live music. Markets are a growing feature of east coast society, with thriving gatherings at Waipu, Marsden Cove, Mangawhai and Bream Bay with temptations galore for serious market shoppers.

The east coast waters have a reputation as a fishing paradise The Ruakākā town centre is the heart of Bream Bay, where you’ll find everything you need, including cafes and restaurants, supermarket and retail stores, the community library, sports ground and other professional services. The beach is well-patrolled in summer. For holidaymakers and Kaipara residents alike, Marsden Cove is an attractive base with its 230-berth marina with all tide and weather access to and from the ocean via a deep water harbour, along with a marine service precinct, public boat ramps and fuel berths. beaches and easy access to local fishing spots. It remains for us at the Weekend Lifestyler to wish our visitors a safe and happy holiday in the peak season as locals and tourists flock in large numbers to different holiday destinations. Make sure to plan your itinerary and get the bookings done well in time to avoid the last-minute rush, and that old admonition applies — remember to carry sunscreen, sunglasses and a proper hat to counter the harsh rays of the sun. ¢ THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS

6 December 22 2023 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

What shall it be? u by Liz Clark

With Christmas just around the corner, making a wish list of everything you would love to have under the tree has to include something for the garden. Still, you could give yourself a few treats from the ‘I have to need it’ list, which is a little naughty — why not? So, let’s take a look at a few ‘needs’ for the garden. Roses You can never have enough roses. Their gorgeous, fragrant blooms are always a joy to have in a vase during the growing season, and no rose is ever the same. Ranging from old heritage varieties to more modern-day cultivars — there is always the perfect colour, shape and size to choose from.

If you’ve got a small garden, patio roses might be the one for you. These are perfect mini versions of their larger cousins. Easy to grow in a pot, they take up minimal space. Some cultivated varieties include Cinderella, Enchantment, Little Nugget, Little Pearl, Moon River, Rexy’s Baby and Scentasia. Flowers Lots of them — the more, the better, plus they’re addictive. For the summer garden, annuals are perfect because they can be replaced with another species once they’ve died back. Many last well

into winter, too. Annuals are easy to grow from seed. Perhaps someone who knows their beloved gardening addict well might put together a basket full of wonderful annual seed packets such as snapdragons, sunflowers, aquilegia, swan plants, asters, Bellis habanera, sweet peas, calendulas, hollyhocks and so many more. Add some flower scissors and a pair of secateurs to finish the gift. Yes, please. A me shed Now, that would be the ultimate. A private little haven where one can

relax with a gardening catalogue or magazine with a glass of wine and while away the warm summer afternoons making plans. All kinds of designs, shapes and sizes are available in kitset form that can be put together. Something for the future perhaps? Dreams are free. Still, you never know — you might just have to ‘need it’, too. Happy Christmas to all our readers. See you in January. ¢

Guardian angels in the surf

u by Liz Clark

As summer arrives and the Christmas season gets into full swing, surf lifesaving clubs on the east coast will be on watch to keep swimmers safe. The first lifesaving club in Northland began at Waipu Cove in November 1928. The Waipu Surf Club was formed when the concern over drownings forged the foundations for future clubs in the region, including Mangawhai. With the improvement in roads and the first world war a not-so-distant memory, holidaymakers were making full use of the white sandy beaches on the east coast. The Auckland Star noted at the time of the club’s formation that it had a strong membership, including people from Whangārei. It also stated: ‘Beach patrols will be arranged whenever numbers of people visit the cove, and life-saving demonstrations will be held shortly. Already a life-saving reel and a length of line have been secured.’ When New Year arrived in 1929, the new club members saved the lives of two swimmers who got out of their depth. ‘The Waipu Cove Surf Club, the first of its kind in the North, is functioning very satisfactorily during the holidays. The club effected rescues of two swimmers who got out of their depth. The members held a work-out before an interested gallery. While the camping crowds were at the cove, the club daily patrolled the beach in uniform.’

worked together to get the 16-yearold girl back to safety, which saved her life. In January 1963, the dramatic rescue of 10 people, including children, resulted in club members going out into dangerous surf and helping the stricken swimmers back to safety. By then, the club had been renamed Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club. A report at the time stated: ‘Resuscitation was not necessary in any case, although several swimmers, some of them children, were near exhaustion.’ ¢

At some point, the club went into a brief recess, then was reformed in 1936. With the advent of the second world war, the lifesavers again were absent from the beaches. Reconvened post-war in 1945, the Waipu members rescued a four-year-old girl found floating facedown

in the Waipu River and successfully resuscitated her. The club wasn’t limited to all-male members either. In 1950, club member Mrs W Beeston swam out into the surf to rescue a teenage girl caught in a strong current. Beeston and her husband

Great value, holiday fun for the whole family. Deep in the heart of an ancient forest that’s gone, the Kauri Museum celebrates one of the world’s greatest trees and honours our relationship with it. Dig deeper at the Kauri Museum

Come rain or come shine, the Kauri Museum is a ‘must-do’ attraction in Northland without crossing the Brynderwyns. With proven popularity, the museum is a well-established destination. Developed for more than 60 years, it’s won many awards and hosted nearly two million people in the small village of Matakohe on the north shore of the Kaipara Harbour. Astonishing to most first-time visitors is that the Kauri Museum has never had operating grants from councils or the government. It is a visitor industry success story as well as being a museum. Following significant new developments and refreshment of its 4,500m² exhibition halls in the last three years, this summer, the Kauri Museum is celebrating with a 10% discount on entry for visitors who mention the advertisement found in this newspaper. As an ideal day trip destination just 40 minutes drive to the west of Mangawhai or Waipu, holiday visitors to Matakohe can enjoy the Kauri Museum in the morning, grab lunch and a coffee at the vibrant Gumdiggers Cafe, walk among giants at the Kauri

Bushmen’s Scenic Reserve nearby and then be back to swim in the Pacific in the afternoon. The Kauri Museum Shop has items that are fun, fine, quirky and of quality that won’t be found in other places, perfect for a classic Kiwi summer. Old-fashioned games, quality wooden toys, colouring pencils and books are made for holiday activities. Bright bucket hats in several colours and sizes for everyone in the family make a classic addition to group photos of a memorable holiday season. For campers, there are bold enamel or stainless-steel mugs with carabiner handles to clip onto a backpack. There are more than memories to be found at the Kauri Museum. Dig deeper here. ¢

The fresh bouquet u by Ann van Engelen

Kerry Marinkovich enjoys making her organic bouquets and floral arrangements from her home-grown flowers in Mangawhai. “My husband Gareth and I own Seven Circles Farm in Tara Road and attend the Mangawhai Community Market at the school with our flowers and produce,” says Kerry. “We love being at the markets — it’s not just about selling. It’s a great chance to connect, share tips and chat. We love gardening and meeting like-minded people who really appreciate the flowers that we bring along. “We are doing vegetables and eggs as well. My focus is more on the flowers, while Gareth focusses on

the vegetables and chickens. This is our second property. The first one we completely developed from a bare block with gardens and fruit trees. “We always wanted to live sustainably, be self-sufficient and make a living off the land, but that property wasn’t big enough.” Kerry and Gareth have been in Mangawhai coming up for three years. “We have a lot to learn being a young business, but we are learning as we grow. Our sons enjoy being involved with what we are doing, too. I always thought I’d be more interested in growing vegetables, but I discovered I love growing flowers more. “There’s nothing like going outside and seeing the flowers in bloom. I have now put in a garden specifically for cut flowers because I didn’t like picking them. My favourites include dahlias, which are a hot topic in the flower world at present, but there are so many amazing flowers. I also like proteas, chrysanthemums and gladioli. “This year, I’ve been experimenting with plants I have not grown before. I think they’re outrageous and beautiful. To me, gardening is like a big science experience. Sometimes, what I grow works, and sometimes they don’t, but I’m finding some beautiful blooms.

p Kerry Marinkovich says she is enjoying getting to know customers at the Mangawhai Community Market, where she sells fresh flowers and vegetables

“I love subtropical plants like heliconias, which I hope to grow more of as we have such a good climate for subtropical plants. I think my garden has all sorts going on, and I’m not limiting myself. “One of the big things is finding interesting foliage to grow, too, like pittosporum and native plants because I need them for my bouquets rather

Mangawhai

A new song u by Ann van Engelen

Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Surf Lifesaving Club member Tony Baker and his band Sojourn recently released their latest song titled Where We Go, a socially conscious commentary on the current economic climate. “The band formed in 2018, and is a blend of cruisy psych-surf-rock and reggae, characterised by catchy lyrical hooks,” says Tony. “Our music brought us together, we have fun and look after each other. I’m the band manager and the guys are like my little brothers. It’s also nice sitting with older musicians from the 60s–80s in the area. It’s all part of the bigger cycle of life. “When we put on a show we have fun. We didn’t know what to expect when we started but we’ve grown and have a good fan base now. The band has evolved with our music and we consistently play to crowds of up to 500 people. “Music is a never ending cycle of hustle, like any creative pursuits, you never reach the peak of the mountain. We all have full-time jobs and constantly invest back into our band. “We’ve played at some pretty big shows, and love it. We’ve made friends with artists we play alongside and are looking forward to touring this summer. “I love our time together. We’re constantly learning and co-existing together in an amazing space. At times playing is like an out of body experience. It’s a great feeling when we go to shows,

sing our songs and see concertgoers jump up and dance when they recognise a tune. “We stick to our own genre and try to write cool, meaningful, amazing songs. I believe that if we enjoy them, our followers will too. We want to do good things for the band, and music, so people who hear us know that we love what we do. “People in towns across New Zealand now know us from our music. We’re looking forward to playing close to home at the Mangawhai Tavern on January 20. This time we have 500 tickets available and we’re really excited. “It’s so cool having a dance hall full of people that we know and meeting others who have been following our progress. Mangawhai

All about the pie u by Ann van Engelen

Sam and Amy Frater from Cowshed Pies say returning to Mangawhai after living in Melbourne, Australia, was an extremely positive move for their family.

p Amy and Sam love the family lifestyle they have created to have time with their children Arlo and Elton in Mangawhai

p Using his chef skills, Sam is passionate about making the Cowshed Pies a delight to people who purchase them

“I grew up here in Mangawhai and went travelling,” says Amy. “Sam and I lived in Melbourne and had our two children, Arlo and Elton, and then Covid hit. We loved doing things in the city, but due to Covid restrictions, we weren’t allowed to. We then decided a more rural, small-town lifestyle would be better suited for raising children, and the idea to come back felt right.” Sam and Amy had been returning to Mangawhai every summer prior to Covid to run a pop-up cafe called The Cowshed.

and Sam, being a chef, has created a few others. The secret is top-quality ingredients, and there’s no jelly or fillers. We didn’t realise that they would be as popular as they are. “We have flavours such as beef brisket and jalapeno, creamy chicken, lamb and mint and our vegetarian Mexican bean, which is gaining popularity. “We have our Cowshed Pie caravan in front of the Mangawhai Village Hall from Wednesday to Sunday, but come New Year, we’re going to do seven days a week for the summer and see how we go. We also go to the community market at Mangawhai Beach School on

“When we came home, the idea was to run the restaurant, and our pies were our side hustle. We did markets and had a wholesaler, but the pies took off, and we had to re-evaluate as we were spread too thin for the kids as the move was a lifestyle choice for them. We realised we couldn’t keep the restaurant and excel with the pies, so we chose pies for our family time. We are currently creating a new commercial kitchen on our property. “Some of the recipes we inherited from my mum. She has amazing flavours

Saturdays. Sam loves doing the pies. He’s a pie-making machine and is super efficient. He finds he still gets that chef creativity by bringing out the specials — we have special shelves just for his cookbooks. He always has his book to write notes in and gain inspiration for new flavours. “We love it here, and Sam’s looking forward to getting the surfboard out once we have the new kitchen installed. He loves mowing the lawn and having a lifestyle that frees up time for our family. We’ve been back for two years now, and it certainly, was the right decision for us.” ¢

A glow worm experience

Visitors to the Milky Way Glow Worm Cave guided walk, located at the 320-acre Waipu Caves Farm Park, 567 Waipu Caves Road, find themselves in awe of the natural experience when they spend time at the family-owned property. Ian and Cindy Fox opened the park earlier this year with their daughter Jade. “The Milky Way Glow Worm Cave was a secret until we opened,” says Ian. “Waipu Caves Farm Park is a destination like no other. We are one of the few guided cave tours where you may take photos. With lights off, you see New Zealand’s world-famous glow worms and learn about their life cycle. You’re taught cave conservation, its geology and ecology and the cave environment. “Walk through beautiful native bush with naturally sculpted limestone rocks. The tour gives people an amazing experience of safely entering the underworld rich in pristine cave formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones. “There are many walking tracks called the Jurassic Walks, which lead people through karst limestone rocks in the native bush or along the river. Goats, lambs, calves and pigs that have been hand-reared that you can pet. “There’s a diverse range of activities and environments to explore, with more than half the property covered in native bush, plus farm roads to bike on. You can explore and swim in the beautiful rocky-bottomed stream, and there are natural limestone cliffs for abseiling and rock climbing. “We also have a campground for tents and motorhomes of all sizes and a special

and Instruction in abseiling, rock climbing, bushcraft and caving, I also have 16 years in environmental work, including reforestation, landscaping and environmental consultation and have been involved in Cave Search and Rescue for the last five. “Cindy worked in education for over 18 years as a paediatric occupational therapist. She’s currently working with children who have experienced trauma and need support for their healing. This is done within nature and includes the farm animals on the land.” The Milky Way Glow Worm Cave and Waipu Caves Farm Park is situated at 567 Waipu Caves Road, Waipu. ¢

Make it your dream home

A festive touch u by Ann van Engelen

Choosing art for your home is as important as choosing the home itself. The Mangawhai Artists Gallery community is celebrating the festive season with an assortment of artworks at its annual Christmas exhibition, giving locals and visitors to the area the chance to enjoy what is on offer. The exhibition, consisting of ceramics, paintings and everything in between, is a team effort and runs until Wednesday, January 3, at 45 Moir Street, in Mangawhai Village, opposite Bennetts Cafe. “More than 40 members have contributed, which is a record,” says exhibition coordinator Chris Den Hartogh. “The range of work is extraordinary. Not only do members contribute work to be shown, but they also hang it. One of our members, Elena Nikolaeva, curates the show to ensure it presents as a cohesive exhibition and has, once again, created magic out of mayhem.” It is a ‘cash and carry’ event, meaning art can be taken home upon purchase. Works sold will be replaced

with new ones. The gallery also has Kaiwaka resident and international artist Peter Panyoczki returning in early January 2024, presenting his exhibition Immersion. “Existence is enigmatic,” says Peter. “The events around us are inexplicable. There are obstacles in our way. More than ever, it seems to me that we actually want to avoid them. It affects our concept of life, which is always shaken by external things. “Fundamental doubts arise, including our future, the future of humanity — politics is out of control, the basis of life is at risk. Artistic activity is another means of reflection. Every work is a snapshot, the encrustation of feelings, mental images and reflections. “Art wants to get behind the covering of the opaque, to make the hidden visible, to show the pain, or to make it bearable. Will art make it? What do I do as an artist? I want to dive into finding visual metaphors for these

numerous levels that we encounter. Immersion will be my theme. I exhibit work that is aesthetically and technically diverse, that perhaps contradicts, is non-representational and figurative, just as our path is not straight. “I also deviate, sense new possibilities that I merely hint at. I would like to invite the viewer to immerse into their own thoughts p Barry Clark was on hand showing off some of the fine works of art on display Photo: Joel Cayford and, if there is the need, for dialogue. Make it your dream home

Avoiding the new build blues u by Liz Clark

The architectural plans are done, a builder is engaged, and then the bank hits with a bombshell that the mortgage will be available only as progress payments — or your builder goes under. It’s something always to be prepared for when obtaining a mortgage for a new build from the ground up. Your bank must be reassured that its investment in a new home is secure. While it sounds tedious and frustrating, the process can be easier if you are clear about your plans with your mortgage adviser from the start. It’s also important to note that in recent times, the news media has been full of the disastrous collapse of building companies nationwide and clients being left high and dry with either incomplete builds or none at all. Many have been stuck with large mortgages and still have to pay them regardless. That’s something everyone wants to avoid when proceeding with new construction. Choosing a builder can be made easier by asking for local recommendations, especially if you are new in the community you’ve chosen to live in. All builders are required to be licensed building practitioners under rules introduced several years ago. They cannot proceed with construction unless they have that licence.

Never take your potential contractor’s word for it. Always check on the Licensed Building Practitioners website at ketelbp.mbie.govt.nz/advanced-buildingpractitioner-search. The same applies to any subcontractors your builder may engage for work such as plumbing and electrical, which requires certification by a registered electrician. Your builder and their subcontractors should all have public liability insurance — your bank will require verification of this and a copy of the building contract, especially if it is a fixed-price one. At each stage of the building process, your bank will only release funds once each part of the project has been certified as completed by a registered valuer. Your budget should include this to cover all the inspections the valuer will make at each completed stage of the project. They will then furnish your mortgage lender with a report confirming completion. If your builder asks for more funds for your build, then you should ask why. Fixed-price contracts are legally binding on the builder and client — any extra costs should be questioned.

Once the house is complete and the council inspector has done the final certification, if there are concerns, engage an independent building inspector to ensure your new home meets the required specifications. There is usually a grace period of two weeks for due diligence on your new home after moving in before the final settlement is made with your construction professional. ¢

Make it your dream home

Living the lifestyle dream u by Liz Clark

When you tire of commuting in the gridlocked traffic of large cities like Auckland, the yearning to move to somewhere more tranquil, like a lifestyle block, can be powerful. Well, it’s a great idea — if you can make it happen. There are a few things to consider before making the decision. First of all, how much land do you really want? For many, a large lifestyle section can meet all the criteria without the hassle of maintaining a far larger property, especially for those in more senior years who might be semi-retired. That’s something to consider. Lifestyle properties are not cheap, either. Starting from scratch on a bare block of land is backbreaking work, and nothing comes easily — that’s the truth of the matter. Several factors come into play when building a home in a rural area. First, finding a building contractor, within your chosen area should be a priority. A locally-based contractor or reputable home construction company should be your first port of call. Check reviews and also ask local people for recommendations. Alternatively, a relocated home or cabin can both be viable options. Try

p Lifestyle blocks are a great choice for enjoying space, fresh air and the company of favourite animals

to use companies that know the area well enough and are familiar with local council building requirements. The other thing to consider is power supply, likewise, for subcontractors, such as plumbers, electricians and

others involved in home construction. Don’t expect power to be available onsite unless it’s an already formed and consented lifestyle subdivision. Get a quote from your local power authority, such as Northpower. Expect costs for

power supply installation to be anywhere from $10,000 to more than $50,000, which can be off-putting. The alternative is to go off-grid and use solar power. Even that comes with significant costs to be taken into consideration. Still, the exercise is worth it. On an existing property, check the boundary fences to ensure they are robust and secure. Have a fencing contractor come in and repair or replace fence lines where needed or put in new fencing on a bare block. Hold off getting animals until all the fences are done, and the stock water supply is in place. If you plan to get cattle register your property with NAIT before proceeding. Consider your stocking levels, too. If you have, for instance, a couple of acres, you wouldn’t be putting your horses on it or several cattle, for example. Whatever you decide, a lifestyle block is just that — lifestyle and a great one, too. ¢

Make it your dream home

Bringing the outside in u by Ann van Engelen

When it comes to creating your dream home environment, following your heart and drawing on furniture design and artworks you like is as important as the house plans you choose. If you have a barn-style house, rustic furniture may be what you would enjoy as it often enhances the aesthetics of such dwellings. Keeping things simple or going for the more traditional look can be achieved by browsing magazines or the Internet for ideas, visiting your local furniture stores or getting pointers from friends. Bringing the outside into your home can be as simple as visiting art galleries or finding landscape photographers in your area and purchasing pieces that bring what you love into your spaces. A dining room may have a painting of a garden, and a lounge might look good with an ocean scene or photograph of orcas or dolphins jumping out of the ocean. When it comes to bedrooms, keeping things calm rather than busy helps to create a relaxed atmosphere. When it comes to children’s bedrooms, framing their own art for the walls is often encouraging, or letting them choose a piece of art they like can help start them on their way to appreciating such luxuries, no matter how big or small. Make it your dream home

Small is the new big u by Ann van Engelen

With tiny homes coming into their own and being the choice of people wanting a small-scale dream home, even the smallest of homes have become havens for those who make the choice. Environmental consciousness, selfsufficiency, and the desire for a life of adventure are just some of the reasons people are choosing to go small. The philosophy and motivation behind the tiny house movement often revolve around the desire of people to live modestly while conserving resources. A tiny or small home has become the dream of many people. With a bit

Landshare has also become a popular solution for siting. However, it may mean you need to be fully off-grid and selfcontained, as some properties don’t have water, power or septic access. Ensure your space is not in a flood zone, be mindful of trees above that can come down in storms or high winds and consider anchoring your build so it can’t move.

A tiny or small home has become the dream of many people of thought and planning, you will be surprised how much storage space you can achieve. In many cases, it is out with the old and in with the new as people declutter their lives for a fresh start. It is important to check insurance options early in the piece as, at times, there are certain criteria that need to be met by insurance companies.

Staff at local nurseries can help give ideas of the best plants to use for creating your dream space. Vegetables, shrubs, flowers and trees all help create an atmosphere outside your house. Knowing how to companion-plant vegetables and flowers makes for a happy garden and saves on food bills. There’s nothing like fresh food from your own garden.

The opportunity to decorate your small space is as big as a larger size house. Colour schemes, furnishings and floor coverings can add to the personality of what you want to achieve. When it comes to your tiny home, whether a new build, a pre-loved cabin or a rustic farm shed that you are

Make it your dream home

Bringing your home to reality u by Liz Clark

These days, design for new homes spans a range of budgets, from a small cabin in the bush to an expansive mansion on a coastal clifftop overlooking the ocean. Still, it’s finding the right home design to fit in with your budget and your lifestyle to bring it all together and make a dream become a reality. It can happen. It’s always good to visit various show homes in your chosen area to get an idea of what you would like. Many wellestablished construction companies offer house and land packages, where the design can be varied to suit your needs. Always go with a company with a longstanding history of providing quality homes rather than a more recent one. Well-established home builders, can provide full contractual support and have their own building teams and subcontractors to keep the build process hassle-free. Working with a home consultant on the layout of your future home is the first step. With the advancement of technology in computer-aided design, a three-dimensional plan can be envisioned on the screen. The floor plan

can be altered to fit your needs without leaving your chair. A good consultant will be able to help you with the right interior colour design, lighting, kitchen layout and style, plus all the finer details, such as how it will look on completion. Some companies can even help with finance via a mortgage broker to get the best financial package to cover the land purchase and build. Before signing any contract relating to a land and house package deal, have your legal adviser look it over before paying any initial deposit and committing. Alternatively, if you’ve already purchased a section or larger site, engaging an architect provides more scope and a unique home to reflect your needs and taste. Talk to your architect about your aspirations and, of course, what your budget is. Draw a rough sketch of what you think you might like your floor plan to look like. Will it be a double-storey home or

Make it your dream home

Mastering bedroom décor u by Liz Clark

Creating the ultimate master bedroom can seem daunting; still, even the smallest of bedrooms can be made into an elegant statement. Bedroom furniture is the main feature of any sleeping space. Mismatched or cluttered furniture can make a room look untidy and unwelcoming. Keep it simple. Choose furniture that complements rather than detracts from your bed base and headboard. The latter are also important. If your bed is older, use a

fitted sheet with a valance to hide any unsightly tears or fading on the base or a larger-sized duvet that will cover both sides and the end of the bed. Old, tired bedroom furniture can be given new life by repainting, stripping back to the base timber or even decoupaging to make a unique statement. The same can be applied to the headboard, which can be used as a centrepiece for a new look design. Alternatively, the headboard could be covered with upholstery material available from retailers. Contemporary design has trended towards a minimalistic style — still, make your room yours. Wall colour is also crucial. It can make a difference between a welcoming, intimate private space or an absolute decorating disaster. We all love a splash of colour but how far do you go? Using white or cream can make a small room look much bigger and airier compared to dark shades, making it look smaller. Use a colour wheel to help coordinate

p The main bedroom is a space where you can make it more personal to suit your taste

your paint or wallpaper tones. Green, for instance, can give the room a restful feel, whereas darker shades can make it feel more cosy. The look and feel of a room is up to individual aesthetics rather than necessarily following what is trending in the home decorating magazines. If unsure about taking it too far with the colour ideas on your walls, keep the tones neutral, then complement with colour using throws, frames, pillows and cushions to create a bright room without

the colour screaming off the walls, so to speak. Curtains, too, can be matched to create your preferred look. Lighting is another consideration. Take time to decide what kind of lights you would like to have. For high ceilings, using a pendant light is ideal. There are many options to choose from, or even engage a lighting designer to help make the room more special. Tall lamp stands for each side of the bed, or bedside lamps are also another choice. ¢

One Tree Point & Ruakaka

A fresh start u by Ann van Engelen

Adam Pritchard and Joanna Kurzepa moved to Waipu from the United Kingdom on December 4 with their daughter Mia-Honey for a new start in life. “Joanna is an anaesthetic technician working at Whangārei Hospital,” says Adam. “I’m an electrician by trade but will be looking after Mia until school starts again. We thought with Mia being six years old, you don’t get this opportunity very often. “I’ve worked on the tools for many years, working my way up to maintenance management at companies such as John Lewis, the Cable Car that goes across the Thames and the Tower of London. When you put new equipment into old buildings, you need to have perfect calculations for where things have to go. “We were originally considering moving to Canada, but Joanna’s job does not exist there, and she didn’t want to return to nursing. She found that some of her colleagues had worked here and we saw some jobs. She was accepted for Whangārei, and the rest is history — our discussion lasted all of one minute.” Adam and Joanna had guidance from groups such as Brits in New Zealand. “People told us about the different areas and the Waipu community fit with what we are hoping to achieve. When we arrived, another English couple, Adam and Lucy Newton, invited us

p Adam and Joanna appreciate the friendship they have built with locals Adam and Lucy Newton, as well as meeting other community members

to a BBQ, and we really appreciated their friendship. “They’ve been here for three years and have been integral in getting us to where we are with advice. We were introduced to possums and a multitude of mozzies, which was interesting. “So far, we have joined Little Nippers on Sundays at Waipu Cove and visited the Waipu Caves, which we will return to better equipped. It was amazing seeing the glow worms and things. Waipu Beach is wonderful as well.

p Adam Pritchard and his partner Joanna Kurzepa are living in the Waipu area with their daughter Mia-Honey

“Living here is not as constricted as England. There is a lot more space and fewer people. “In England, you have to drive quite aggressively to get anywhere with so many cars vying for the road — it’s nowhere near as bad here. “We left in six-degree temperatures and landed in Singapore at 30 degrees. It was 19 here and still exceedingly warmer, but I cheekily told my dad it was freezing, knowing they had just had snow. We’re looking forward to enjoying an active lifestyle

and meeting more people through our interests. “The people we have met have been so welcoming, and getting Mia settled is exciting, too. We are excited to rekick our life back into a positive energy and re-energise our lifestyle. We look forward to Christmas day at the beach and are very grateful to be here. “We’re still pinching ourselves and driving around, amazed at what we find. “Mia says she loves being able to go barefoot and liked all the activities and games at Little Nippers.” ¢

Health & Education

Taking care of ourselves u by Ann van Engelen

With the year nearly over and as we head into 2024, now is a good time to re-evaluate our mental, physical, and emotional health.

p Consider prioritising your health, and that of your friends and family as we go into the New Year

p Spending time at the beach, or having a picnic with your loved ones is one way to start creating a healthy lifestyle

The Bream Bay and Mangawhai area has a wide variety of traditional medical clinics, holistic healing centres and exercise-related opportunities. Most people understand the importance of regular exercise, eating healthy, having regular meals and staying hydrated. If you are unsure of how to do this, a visit to your health clinic will see staff setting you on the right path for a more positive future. Making sleep a priority is also a must to help combat fatigue, depression and other negative aspects of sleep-deprived living. Consider turning off all electronic devices at least one hour before sleep, at a minimum. Studies show that two or more hours of screen time in the evening can seriously disrupt the melatonin surge needed to fall asleep. Try reading a

ecstatic dance, where you can learn to relax your body and make new friends along the way. For our front-line workers, including teachers, doctors, nurses and emergency service crew, connecting with the team at Heart Place Hospital in Mangawhai offers innovative and powerful healing modalities that help carers who need support. Heart Place has a network of likeminded providers that make a difference in the lives of essential workers on the front lines of healthcare and education. As we say goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024, take the time to set goals and priorities and practice gratitude for all you have. Spend time at the beach, go for picnics or bush walks or visit the elderly you know who may appreciate contact. Focus on the positive things in

book, taking a bath or doing some other relaxing activity. Taking care of our mental health is also vital. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act and helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. If you find yourself or a loved one struggling, seek help from trained professionals, whether through your family doctor, local counselling centre or calling one of the mental health hotlines. Jas Singh and the team at Two Birds Cafe, based in the Ruakākā Town Centre, say they have appreciated serving their customers this year and look forward to continuing to meet new people in 2024. “We’re loving it here,” says Jas. “Ruakākā is a developing area, and we’re seeing new people come in all the time. We enjoy learning customers’ names and remembering how they like their coffee and other things. It’s an honour to see the positive reviews we receive. “All of our food is made on-site, we use Atomic coffee, and have lots of varieties of milk on hand.” Jas says the team at Two Birds Cafe recently introduced its new menu. “We have steak, fish and scallops including a kids’ menu. We also cater for dairy-free, vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan meals. “It’s been a very busy, positive year. It’s not like we are just selling coffee — we really are selling everything. We’ve assisted with a variety of functions and have been making birthday cakes for our clients, which is very special. “It’s nice to see how much more health-conscious people are with their food choices as well. With summer here, many people are loving iced drinks and salads rather than big meals.

“It’s great being a part of the local community. It certainly is a family cafe, and we have our regular customers and we know their daily order. Hospitality comes with a lot of pressure, and each good response that we get encourages us to do better. “My team appreciates how kind people have been. We’ve seen people helping each other and us as well. I’m glad I made the move and took the risk to come here. “Having seen the effect of the recession on our community, we have tried our best to keep our prices the same to help. Even our coffee has remained the same price. “We all appreciate our clientele and aim to serve everyone with good quality and affordable prices. It’s not just about the food we serve. It’s about creating an environment that people can come to with their friends and family.” Jas says other retailers and businesses in the area are very encouraging as well. “We are all small businesses, and if something happens to one of us, we all

The annual Toi Māori Festival hosted by Ōtamatea High School recently saw kura come together to celebrate Māori culture and tikanga through kapa haka. “The festival is a kapa haka focussed event with schools in the Kaipara area invited, including Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Rodney College, Paparoa and the Ngāti Whātua group Te Uri o Manumanu,” says Ōtamatea kapa haka tutor Wiremu Ngatipa. “It’s an opportunity for tamariki to stand on stage for their kapa haka, gain experience through their respective schools and showcase their skills and talents. “Many of the youth have worked on their performances over the course of the year. Ōtamatea High School decided to set the bar high for themselves and gave themselves two weeks to learn a new bracket, and they did extremely well. p The Ōtamatea Toi Māori Festival is an annual opportunity for students to show their kapa haka skills and “I love being a kapa haka gain competition experience tutor — it’s an awesome community event. Summer Motoring

A summer of classic car action u by Andy Bryenton

For those who love classic cars and motorcycles, the summer is a time to cruise, appreciate, enjoy and talk to like-minded people at a huge list of shows. There’s something special about a modern classic car, bike and hotrod show, with a convivial atmosphere, great food and timeless music setting the backdrop for a collection of machines right out of the pages of a collector’s guide. With more and more people getting into the hobby of restoring, customising and collecting cars, several of these festivals have become far more open in their interpretation of a classic.

motoring out onto the beachfront for a long weekend. On the weekend of February 4, all eyes will be on Waipu as the town’s Caledonian Park fills up with custom machines and immaculate restorations for the BBS Timbers Waipu Car and Bike Show. This one is always a favourite, thanks to the legendary hospitality of Waipu and the town’s distinctive Celtic attitude, always ready for a good party.

The traditional rounding out of the season is the big Easter Sunday spectacular hosted in Mangawhai A new crop of younger automobile fans have grown up with the European and Japanese sports cars of the 1980s and 1990s as their own particular classics. There’s a growing acceptance of these marques alongside muscle cars and hotrods from the US. The season begins with Kumeu, on January 19, 20 and 21, a threeday festival that’s the biggest in the country. Following close behind is the January 26, 27 and 28 Orewa Rodders Beach Festival, which brings classic

On March 8, 9 and 10, it’s time to head north to the Bay of Islands for the huge Cruz’n the Bayz event, once again gathering classic and custom cars and bikes in an idyllic seaside setting, and promises great opportunities for a summer cruise. After that, mark your calendar for Hotrods and Harleys, the classic and custom festival in Dargaville, which sets up on the big field days site just after the huge farming event on March 16. Expect to see some wild bikes and

Summer Motoring

Summer under canvas u by Andy Bryenton

The first-ever car was a convertible, as Mr Benz based it on a horse-drawn carriage, but with summer here, is it time for you to copy his example and go ‘topless’? From the top-rated convertible ever, Jaguar’s E-Type, to the acclaimed best of the 1990s revival in ragtop popularity, the BMW Z3 2.7, there are canvas-lidded sports cars for all walks of life. The biggest convertible ever may be that ultimate expression of driving extravagance, the Cadillac Eldorado, specifically the 1959 model with its massive fins and long, chrome-trimmed styling. Each of the doors on this monster is the same length and weight as a small motorcycle. It was a firm favourite of

When it comes to price, it’s hard to beat the $19 million Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider, a sleek, black convertible roadster from 1939. The Spider combines classic styling with rarity and racing pedigree. Powered by the same eight-cylinder engine which brought Alfa victory in the Mille

The Spider combines classic styling with rarity and racing pedigree celebrities of the time, most notably the ‘king of rock ‘n’ roll, Elvis Presley. The fastest topless sports car in the world is almost certainly the Bugatti W16 Mistral, a $5 million monster with 1,600 horsepower, 10 radiators, tyres worth more than a second-hand Corolla (each), and a top speed of 420km/h. With the top down, one would assume that this kind of velocity would be enough to leave you bald as a bowling ball by the time you reached your destination, but clever deflectors mean that you can rack

First responders appeal u by Ann van Engelen

With the holiday season upon us, Northland’s first responders and road safety advocates encourage greater road safety as the region heads toward the highest road toll for a calendar year in decades. Northland Rescue Helicopters, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, New Zealand Police, Hato Hone St John, Northland Road Safety Trust and the Northland Transportation Alliance say the region’s road toll is ‘horrendously high’ and driver behaviour needs to dramatically change. To date, this year, 33 people have lost their lives in crashes, while in 2022, 38 people died on Northland roads. Northland Rescue Helicopter paramedic Paul Davis and pilot Steve Couchman are again pleading with motorists to rethink their behaviour to reduce unnecessary harm and deaths. “We’re all part of the community, we all have family, and we all care for people, so being confronted with the aftermath of needless road crashes is not something we want to see,” the pair say. Northland road policing manager, Inspector Anne-Marie Fitchett, says knocking on a family’s door to tell them their loved ones are dead is something no one ever wants to do.

“To have to tell them that the death is due to a road crash that did not need to happen is even worse. Choosing not to wear seatbelts, drinking or using drugs before driving, speeding and being distracted by phones are our primary killers. It doesn’t have to be this way. “I want people to call out their friends and family who are repeatedly showing poor driver behaviour, stand up to them and tell them it’s not OK. Police can enforce the law, but it’s communities who will resolve poor driving behaviour and ultimately save lives.” Fire and Emergency New Zealand Te Tai Tokerau district manager Wipari Henwood, says that they’re often first on the scene of motor vehicle accidents. “While our crews do their best to perform CPR, stabilise patients, and make the crash area as safe as possible, it’s still challenging. No one wants to be involved in a crash or respond to one, but we always do our best to look after people when it happens.

“Unfortunately, our people take that trauma home to their families or keep it within themselves and have to deal with it, regardless of the support they receive.” Ben Lockie, Hato Hone St John district operations manager — Te Tai Tokerau, says their staff deal with extremely traumatic road crash injuries. “We encourage motorists to step up by taking responsibility for the safety of themselves and their passengers. I also

have a request for New Zealanders who love getting out on the water and hitting the beaches and lakes over the summer. This makes it one of the busiest times of the year with water-related call-outs. “If you’re in a boat, wear a correctly fitted lifejacket and tell someone the general direction you’re travelling. It’s also important to swim between the flags and try to remain near a lifeguard and keep a close watch on young children in and around water.” ¢
