A miniature passion Coming from a family involved with racehorses, Leanne Stringer loved the animals from a young age. When she purchased her son Hayden a miniature horse for his 12th birthday, she didn’t realise a lifelong passion would begin for the small animals. Leanne says she loves watching her herd and seeing the individual personalities of each horse as they race around the paddocks together having fun. She delights in ensuring the horses in her care have the best life possible.

Pet Refuge, the brainchild of Julie Chapman, founder and CEO of children’s charity KidsCan opened in August. The organisation has partnered with Women’s Refuge, Shine, and Shakti to assist pets via referrals. “Due to practicalities, women escaping family violence are usually unable to take their pets with them to safe houses,” says Julie. “We transport small animals from around New Zealand to the shelter and have a national network of safe farms to care for larger farm animals.” Police are expecting a steep increase in family violence as Christmas pressures combined with the stresses of Covid-19 hit home. “Animals provide solace for people living in abusive relationships but are

situations, knowing that their beloved furry family members are going to be just as protected and kept safe as she will be,” says Larah. “It can very often be the difference between a woman staying in a violent situation or her leaving.” The refuge relies on donations and has launched its Christmas appeal aiming to raise $200,000 to continue running. “The money helps buy blankets, toys and exercise equipment, medication, transport, and pays for vets, expert animal carers, caseworkers and support staff,” says Julie. “Since the refuge was set up, 54 animals have been helped, and 22 have been reunited with their owners. The shelter has provided over 2,217 safe bed nights.

Animals come from all over the country to the shelter also often a barrier to leaving because victims can’t take pets to refuges. Pet Refuge was set up to remove that barrier. “Animals come from all over the country to the shelter, at an undisclosed location on the outskirts of Auckland. Last year, police responded to 16,833 family violence incidents nationwide in December and 16,905 in January. They are expecting another busy season due to the impact of Covid.” Crisis social worker Larah Bottomley says without Pet Refuge, some women would never escape their dangerous environments. She recently had Pet Refuge help a client relocate her two beloved horses. “Pet Refuge means that the women I work with are able to feel a lot more comfortable with leaving violent

“There are so many barriers to victims escaping dangerous and sometimes lifethreatening situations. It is great to be able to take one of those barriers away in New Zealand.” Police National Prevention Manager Harm Reduction, Inspector Natasha Allan says the discreet service helps victims of family harm make decisions about their wellbeing and safety, reassured that their pets would be safe. “It is a vital support to those who may need to find safety for themselves and their whānau this Christmas.” To donate or get help — go to petrefuge.org.nz or call 0800 Pet Refuge Women’s Refuge is 0800 Refuge, and men who feel they may harm a loved one or need help can call 0800 Hey Bro. Mangawhai Army and St John Cadets have joined forces giving a chance for members to learn a variety of crossover skills. “I began cadets five years ago and am involved with both groups,” says Northland St John Divisional Youth manager and Army Cadet commander Anastasia Tinsel. “I am the unit commander, and Rachael Elliot is the captain. We also have Peter Logue, who had three children come through cadets. He has always helped us with anything we need along the way.” St John Cadets cater for 6–18 years old while the Army Cadets age group is 13–18 years old.

We also plan to have workshops such as operating drones. “This summer, we will be organising beach clean-up days to get the community work going again. “Local Ian McDougall has also helped us immensely over the years and recently donated his home-built trailer sailer to our unit, and Josie Gritten gave us a Hobie Cat. “We are in the process of reigniting the navy cadets, and as the boats need work, our plan is for the cadets to

We love what we do and have so much fun with the youth St John Cadets meet from 5–7pm, while the Army Cadets meet from 6–8pm on a Thursday night at the Mangawhai Army Unit on Settlement Road next to the RSA in Hakaru. From 6–7pm, both groups merge. “Merging means members can attend both units at the same time. The 13–18-year-olds cover both curriculums and learn a wider skill set even though they are independent identities. For example, Army Cadets can attend a first aid course and St John can join an army survival camp. “We are aiming to hold more camps to help develop social skills, communication, bushcraft, first aid and

learn to repair and rebuild them. Water safety, using a boat, learning to sail and emergency plans will also be on the agenda. “I am a family support worker for Heart Kids and have been working with youth for 23 years. Through cadets, I see young people who have difficult situations in life enjoy time out. “We see them build confidence and gain social skills as they let go of some of the hardships they have. They realise there are people along the way that will help them. One moment can change their lives forever. Even a little positive comment can redirect them.

“Cadets help people from all walks of life to gain the courage to make the right choice for them, even if they know it will be hard work. Last year, my daughter Samantha received our first St John Grand Prior award, which was extra special. “We love what we do and have so much fun with the youth. They joke around and have good innocent fun. We

see them have light bulb moments that inspire me to carry on doing what we do. “We are always looking for volunteers, especially for the army unit, as we only have myself, and Rachael Elliot. We would love to hear from anyone with skill knowledge they would like to share. “People can contact us through the Mangawhai Cadet Unit Facebook page for more information.” ¢ As seen on Grand Designs 2019

Nail technician Katie Green opened Little Canvas Boutique at One Tree Point when she and her partner Chase became the new owners of Marsden Motors. “I have always enjoyed experimenting with nail art for my friends and family,” says Katie. “I come from a real estate background, and we have a four-year-old daughter. When we moved here from Puhoi, I decided to open a nail boutique at home, so I could be with her. “I called my business Little Canvas Boutique because to me, nails are little blank canvases that you get to create something cool on.” Katie completed her gel nail beautician training through Surmanti, a professional nail industry trainer. “I focus totally on nails and making them look pretty. I teach people nail care at the same time as it is important people know about the health of their nail plates. “I don’t cut the cuticle, as they are your nail protection against bacteria. You push the cuticle back and oil them for hydration. That keeps them healthy and promotes growth and strength within the nail plate. I also offer treatment for damaged, weak and cracked nails that help to strengthen and repair them. “I love meeting new people and being creative. I get to know their stories and fashion style. Some people want nude

nails, while others want bright and funky. I have glitter, stickers and do freehand design. “I have some really nice Christmas designs to make people feel happy, which is important after the challenging year we have had.” Katie has a swatch book for clients to pop out and choose nail colours from against their skin tone. “Choosing colours is often the hardest part of an appointment. I use the Gel Bottle range, which is high-quality and can only be sourced through being a trained technician. “I also have protocols in place for the elderly, and I stock a range of non-gel polishes for people who prefer them and those under the age of 16. I think it is unnecessary to expose younger skin to the UV light for drying. “I also ensure to the best of my ability that everything is sanitised to the highest standards. My tools are disinfected with a hospital grade sanitiser between each use and placed in a disinfectant bath overnight. “The creativity is the thing that really attracted me to nail art. People can see what I do on my Little Canvas Boutique Facebook page. I am available for

A touch of Monet u by Liz Clark

In the warmth of summertime, water lilies bloom with the glorious colours that were captured in a series of impressionist paintings by French artist Claude Monet. While not everyone can have a vast lake such as that in the gardens of Giverny, water lilies in a half wine barrel in a courtyard setting or an entranceway provide added appeal. No garden setting can be complete without a body of water and the blooms of a water lily rising above the surface to give the finishing touch. Water lilies have approximately 70 described species distributed across temperate, subtropical and tropical climates globally. The plants have been cultivated for centuries, with many varieties developed by horticulturalists readily available to home gardeners.

Being sun lovers, they need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for robust growth. The circular leaves reappear on the water surface each spring and last well into autumn before dying off during the winter dormancy period. Water lilies are hardy, growing easily in the base of muddy ponds or silt-filled pots without any problems. Care is minimal, especially in more naturalised settings such as artificial ponds and lakes on rural properties. The plants self-propagate from rhizomes growing in the pond bottom. However, they can also spread and become somewhat of an issue if other water

plant species are present. For most gardeners, water lilies are grown in a more controlled environment, such as a small fishpond or a water-filled bowl or pot. Most water lilies can be obtained from a local garden centre or specialist nursery. More often than not, they come as bare-rooted rhizomes in plastic bags. Extra care needs to be taken with young lily plants as they need to be planted at a shallower depth than more mature plants. Ideally, the pot should be at least 10–15cm below the water level then gradually lowered each season to a depth of 60cm.

The soil medium for water lilies should be a silty clay-type with well-rotted cow, horse or sheep manure added in. Slowrelease fertiliser tablets are also useful for plant growth during the growing season. Avoid using potting mix. Many nurseries can provide specialised plastic lily pots, or alternatively, a terracotta pot with its drainage hole covered with fine mesh can be used. Flower colours range from pure white to cream, pinks, reds, purples and deep blue shades. The choice is down to what suits individual tastes. For more information, visit your local nursery or search online for more options. ¢

Mangawhai Historic Village movie theatre is set to run a series of movies for the summer period, including James and Isey on December 18. “The movie theatre is the old Anglican church building that began its life in 1886 as the Beach School,” says Mangawhai Historic Village trustee John Phillis. “The school used it until the 1950s when it was donated to the Anglican Church. The old building was deconsecrated and donated to Mangawhai Historic Village in 2017. The trust decided to use it as a movie theatre

showing is full, we will host a 4pm time slot. Movies will be on every Saturday through summer except Christmas and New Years day with a special screening of Till the lights go out by SIX60 on Wednesday, December 29.” Coincidentally, Matiu Walters, the lead singer of SIX60, is Isey’s great-grandson, and he sings to her in her movie at her 100th birthday party. “I call Matiu ‘Mr Kool’,” says Isey.

“Our movie is about love and respect and people being able to join together as they should be able to. I am grateful that it is showing in a beautiful old church that is not that much older than me. It is like two old ladies being reunited. “At this stage, I am unsure if I will be at the screening, but Jamie will be there

to represent both of us. Being 102 years old, I need to keep myself safe. I truly hope everyone enjoys the show as much as I enjoyed making it.” Check out mangawhaimovies.com to book to see James and Isey or the Facebook page for further information and upcoming films. ¢

Pasta salad u by Deb Wright

This salad is always a hit and so simple. INGREDIENTS 400g of tricolour pasta — if you don’t have that, any pasta will do Bacon — as much or as little as you like. I usually use about six rashers of streaky bacon 1 onion ¼ cup light olive oil ½ cup dark soya sauce 1½ cups of salted cashews (optional but nice) METHOD Cook pasta and drain then place in a bowl. Dice onion. Cut up bacon and fry with onions until cooked, add with juices from frying pan to pasta. The dressing Mix together oil and soya. Add three-quarters of the dressing to the salad and stir together. Just before serving, add the rest of the dressing and cashews. You can eat it warm or cold. It’s a great salad to make with leftover ham rather than bacon. ¢

p Miniature horses have individual personalities, and Leanne says they can be very similar to school children

A miniature passion u by Ann van Engelen

Kaiwaka resident Leanne Stringer fell in love with horses as a child and now spends her days caring for her herd of miniature horses near the Kaipara Harbour. “My mum grew up in Beach Haven and used to ride racehorses,” says Leanne. “When I was born, I came out champing at the bit to have a horse and got my first pony when I was eight years old. I was involved with everything horsey, including eventing and showjumping. “When my son Hayden was four, I came off my horse and broke my back.

our part to play, and my friend Peter became our farrier to take care of our horses’ feet. “With miniatures, you have to keep an eye on their grass intake due to the sugar content, especially after rain. “We now have a few from older people who had some on their lifestyle blocks but found they are more difficult to

competing, so now I get my horse fix this way since I can’t ride anymore. “We take ours to the beach, and they have a lot of fun. They also come inside the house and visit us. Hayden also competes. They do cart and harness, jumping and trail, which is like agility with dogs where they complete an obstacle course.”

Each horse has individual grass tolerance, so you need to be careful as they get older as they can gain weight

That stopped me riding for a few years, and I wasn’t meant to ride again. Hayden kept riding ponies, and we bred and showed Arab horses as well. “He wanted to continue being involved with horses, but after a few falls, he didn’t want to ride the big ones. We got him his first miniature pony for his 12th birthday, and we were hooked. “He started showing along with my niece who lived with us, and one day we visited a big breeding farm, and we came home with even more. We all had

look after than a bigger horse. We have brought them to our property to enjoy their days. “They are also really good therapy for a lot of different reasons and situations. At times, I have had troubled teens come to visit, and they sit in the paddock, and the minis stand around and nuzzle them and have chats. “I never thought I would ever be a miniature horse person as I viewed them as pets. There is so much you can do with them, such as showing and

The horses walk over bridges and through water and other mentally challenging things at the competitions. “They are just like having a big horse, but they are small. People think because they are little they don’t need as much care, but in my opinion, you need to be more careful. “With minis, you need good fences to keep them in their paddock and a facility that if their weight increases, you can lock them up to manage their food intake. You also need a good farrier to

When you are having a bad day, there is nothing like walking out into the paddock and having a bunch of little faces come running out to greet you with unconditional love keep on top of their feet and ensure they see an equine dentist every year to keep their teeth in check. “They need a vitamin and mineral mix and access to a good mineral block in their paddock. Spending time grooming them is also a big part of it, and that is really therapeutic for the human as well. “When you are having a bad day, there is nothing like walking out into the paddock and having a bunch of little faces come running out to greet you with unconditional love.” Leanne feeds her horses hay and other supplements, and she restricts their grass intake at times, which is a dietary need. “Our dentist comes once a year to check their teeth as they can get impacted and sharp. If this happens, they can fill their cheeks with grass to stop the teeth from rubbing, and they get mouth ulcers. “Each horse has individual grass tolerance, so you need to be careful as they get older as they can gain weight.

“Years ago, some studs brought in American Shetlands and put them with traditional miniatures. This made them a lot more leggy and refined, which is a good thing. “When you see a mini, you should be looking at the confirmation of a large horse in a miniature scale. They mostly have lovely personalities, and people have them as therapy animals and take them to rest homes and schools to visit. “The ones that are stroppy or illtempered have usually been spoiled with too many tidbits and treats. Then they come to expect it, and if you don’t have one, they get grumpy, so they need discipline. “I give my little herd a 20kg sack of carrots. I throw them out to everyone instead of personally handing them to each horse as they can also get jealous of each other. “One of mine absolutely adores children. My friend’s children would come visit, and she would get grumpy at the other horse for coming near her children. They are so entertaining, and

we love watching them run around in their pack. “In a group, you see a lot of natural behaviours that people with one or two horses don’t get to see. They have real family dynamics, and you see who is friends with who just like humans. “It is like a school yard with your popular group and quiet ones. They have their routines and sit in the sun and have a little walk together or go running around the paddock racing each other. “In the evenings, they get together and run around and play before the sun goes down. “We also have a donkey called Brian, who lives with my mum’s miniature called Rosie. We rescued Brain from a macadamia orchard. When we went to load him onto a float he would sit down like a dog and refuse to move. “Due to his floating issue, he became a permanent resident. Mum got Rosie from down country, and she decided that Brian was her husband, and they hang together every day. If you can’t find them together, there is something wrong.

“People think horses need to be stabled, but they don’t all the time. We don’t breed them, and my show horses are either ones I brought or rescued. “For Hayden and my niece, competing and showing built their confidence, and they have made some really great friends. We compete nationally, and at times, we travel to other parts of the country to help at shows. “The miniature horses are very intelligent. They do things like walk up to an electric fence and listen to it with their ear to see if it is turned on or not. Ours often do this before going for a swim in the lake that is sectioned off by an electric fence. “They are so cheeky and clever — they give us hours of entertainment. We often take them to Uretiti Beach for a swim and meet up with friends. They play together and race on the beach. One taught himself to surf the waves. “We love our miniature ponies and their individuality. We enjoy their different quirks and having them as a part of our family.” ¢

From waste to treasure u by Ann van Engelen

The Rusty Station in Wellsford is an arm of Mahurangi Wastebusters, a community-owned business diverting waste from the landfill, supplying low-cost items for people to access while providing employment opportunities. “We operate the Snells Beach and Wellsford community recycling centres,” says co-founder and director Matthew Luxon.

“Wastebusters is a community enterprise with charitable status that focusses on reducing the impact of waste on our environment. After two years, we thought it was time to do more in Wellsford, and one initiative is holding a weekly garage sale in the township, and we opened last week. “It also gives us an opportunity to employ staff and give people workplace experience. We called it

Rusty Station as the recycling centre is on Rustybrook Road, but the store is on Station Road. “Everything in the store is saved from going to the tip. The two recycling sites have been owned and operated by the council for years, and Wastebusters divert as much waste as possible for good use. “As there are no private shareholders looking for a dividend, we can do more

a deceased estate, and we were able to return it to the owners through the police. “We are grateful to the Wellsford Community for the support they showed us last week. Everyone had a great day, and people purchased things including classic bric-a-brac, clothing, garden tools, books, games, building and construction material. “We have a great team, and it is great to see someone’s waste become

Some people even have a load on a trailer and include the trailer if it failed its last warrant of fitness as they want their waste to go to a better place.” The recycling centres can handle most waste, including soft plastic silage wrap, polystyrene, green waste and household products.

“Recycle and reuse is important for our community. Our main goal is to be well priced to get the products out the door. We are part of the countrywide zero waste network with members trying to get zero waste as the norm across New Zealand. People can make us a decent offer as well. “Our staff are very careful. Recently, they found an envelope full of cash that was accidentally thrown out from

another person’s treasure. We are also pleased to be here working alongside the amazing Jerusha Tucker and Keep Wellsford Beautiful. We support each other toward the same goal in what we are trying to do. “The Rusty Station garage sale is held from 9am–3pm every Wednesday at 47 Station Road, Wellsford. People can follow us on the mahurangiwastebusters.nz Facebook page.” ¢
