The joyful donut Kelly and Regan Bradburn spent nine years in Australia, enjoying the outdoors lifestyle as they pursued their careers. Upon returning to New Zealand, they settled in One Tree Point to build their family life. Originally a qualified veterinary nurse, Kelly decided to change careers once they started their family and found a special joy in making donuts. She loves nothing more than seeing and hearing how people have come to love her creations through her business Donut Joy, which she began three months ago.

p Toa Henderson, Tama Nahona, Destiny Paikea, Jayden Mainland and Dane Phillips all placed at the recent Rotorua Agrodome Shears competition

Toa has been honing his skills since returning to the competitive circuit when he returned from Australia in 2017. “My grandfather and father were shearers, and I went into it straight into it as a career from school because I really enjoy everything about it,” says Toa. “Being the youngest, I was the keenest to follow in dad’s footsteps and am the only one left doing it. “I Lived in Australia helping my dad with his business and returned to New Zealand nearly five years ago because I felt it was time to come home to my mum’s family here. “I like to encourage people wanting to get into shearing to go for it. We don’t have as many shearers in the country now due to the reduction in

Destiny was runner-up in the senior woolhandling final. ”I competed in 11 open finals last season, from Kaikohe to Gore and realised there wasn’t going to be a lot of opportunities this summer. “We had 36 of the season’s 59 scheduled competitions cancelled, and more may follow, due to Covid restrictions. Rotorua was a close one for us to travel to, and it was well worth the effort of getting there as it was a close competition. “Competing is a great way to learn from watching the older competitors work as well.” Toa was formerly a top lower-grades shearer and has now won eight open finals since his return from Australia.

Toa took out the open shearing final and Tama, the senior title. “Dane took fourth place in the open final, and Jayden came runnerup to Tama in a close senior final.

“Digger Balme from King Country and myself each shore the 20-sheep final in 17min 29sec.” Toa had the better-quality points, including conceding just 16 penalty marks on the shearing board. He took the win by 4.55 points from Te Kuiti shearer Jack Fagan and Digger. “Tama shore the 12-sheep senior final in 14 minutes, beating Jayden by three seconds and just 0.317 points. p Dawn and Nigel say they appreciate the views from the hilltops they cycle to from Ruakākā

Cycling with company u by Ann van Engelen

Exploring the Ruakākā to the Mangawhai area by bicycle has become a regular event for a group of keen cyclists. “We get together with a group of up to 20 people in Mangawhai to ride and thought since we live in Ruakākā, we could start a group here,” says coorganiser Dawn Murphy. “My husband Nigel and I often ride with our friend Liz Davies. It is nice to get off the main highways and explore the local areas. “Liz is an exceptional rider and did the tour of Aotearoa, which is around 3,000km. I used to be a road cyclist but am uncomfortable riding on the busy main roads now. It is a real shame there

isn’t a cycle path around One Tree Point as it is a 20km ride. “Anyone is welcome to join us, but they need to be reasonably fit as we cycle around places like the Waipū Caves Loop, which is 26km. We don’t encourage children as they won’t be able to keep up with us, and we climb 500 metres in two hours.” Dawn says electric bikes are OK, but you still need the fitness to use the gears and be comfortable long distance. “Off the beaten track is completely different to road cycling and we may

only see five cars in the two hours. It is great being able to get together with like-minded people and exercise out in the fresh air. “The best bikes for these rides are with wider, more knobbly tyres versus thin, smooth road tyres. Riding with a group is much nicer than riding alone. We see some fantastic views at times with the sea in the distance. “At times, we ride over to Mangawhai, and another route we take is Finlayson Brook Road, and we go along the gorge and past the falls. We see

Absence payments and customer satisfaction u by Corinne Smith, Managing Director and Accountant

I want to discuss two topics of relevance as we head into another Covid-challenging time. The first is the short-term absence payment that employers and employees can access and then a few words on happy customers and tips to retain those even through the coming Covid storm.

Honouring lives well-lived For a truly personal experience talk to the experts.

Covid-19 Short-Term Absence Payment The Short-Term Absence Payment is for businesses (including self-employed) to help pay for workers who can’t work from home or attend work while they wait for the results of a Covid-19 test. To be eligible, workers need to be unable to work from home and need to miss work while waiting for their test results. There’s a one-off payment of $359 for each eligible worker. Employers or the self-employed can apply for any worker once in any 30-day period unless a health official or doctor tells the worker to get another test.

To apply, businesses must not be getting any of the following payments at the same time for the same worker to cover any situation that is also covered by Short-Term Absence Payment: • any other Covid-19 Wage Subsidy, or • Leave Support Scheme payments You cannot get more than one Covid-19 payment for the same employee at the same time. Find out more about the Short-Term Absence Payment on the Work and Income website workandincome.govt.nz/ covid-19/short-term-absence-payment. Happy customers, happy bottom line ‘Loyalty is when people are willing to turn down a better product or price to continue doing business with you’ — Simon Sinek. If customers are unhappy, they’ll leave you for one of your competitors. If they’ve had a poor experience or been treated badly, some will go as far as making a scene on social media or leaving a bad business review to warn others. Customer satisfaction is important to any business, but the earlier you are in the growth of your business, the more critical it is to ensure that your early customers are highly satisfied. When

you sign up your first customer, that person represents 100 per cent of your customer base, so their opinion of your business, along with the next handful of customers, matters greatly. Think about your early customers and who these people are. If they’re still known to you, you should be proud that they had faith and were one of your earliest customers who backed you. Here’s a few ideas: • Everyone likes to be told they are valued. Start by saying thanks to your loyal customers and be genuine about it • Could you do something to recognise their loyalty? With a gift, discount or a special offer just for them • If they’re still using your product or services, ask them to be a referral customer, review your Facebook or Google business listing, or be featured in a published customer case study. Send a link to your Facebook or Google business listing so that it’s easy for them to add their review For more information or to contact us visit altitudeadvisors.nz. ¢

Art for Art’s sake is the debut exhibition for watercolour artist Femke Koome opening at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery this Friday, February 11. No green-eyed monsters these u by Liz Clark

When mentioning the term hedging, it’s not uncommon to envisage those towering walls of green needing an army of gardeners to keep them in shape. However, in more contemporary times, hedging plants span a much broader range than the traditional classic English country garden species I grew up with during the 1970s. Then, the huge box hedge my parents had growing was the bane of my father’s life. He was forever keeping it clipped and trimmed so the neighbours wouldn’t complain. All that aside, hedging plants now come in all shapes, colours and sizes, including New Zealand natives. They can be used in versatile ways for privacy, windbreaks, garden rooms or an eye-catching effect in small and large gardens. The main points to consider are location, prevailing winds, soil conditions and proximity to neighbouring properties.

Starting with border hedging, New Zealand natives are taking the lead in many new subdivisions and rural developments. Eugenia Ventenati (Lily Pilly) is a fast-growing colourful shrub growing four metres in height and three metres in width. Tolerant of most climatic conditions and soil types, as long as drainage is provided, this variety is ideal for coastal situations. Care is required when the plants are young, including regular watering during the summer months. Once established, regular trims two to three times a year will keep them in good shape. Pittosporum is another wellestablished species used for screening in new garden sites. Its cultivars come in various heights and colouration, and

these should be taken into account when planting in an urban setting. They require full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. Others to consider are corokia, pōhutukawa, akeake and mānuka. Exotic species also used as an alternative to natives include feijoas, olives, camellias, conifers, citrus and many more. If height isn’t a requirement, there are numerous low-growing species to use as alternatives including natives for street frontages, designer gardens, pool and entertainment areas. A great one to try out is using dwarf Buxus as an outer border surrounding a row of hydrangeas. Check out Buxus Green Gem or

Buxus microphylla Koreana for the borders and Bridal Veil hydrangeas for a standout statement. If you’re after attracting the bees, use lavender varieties such as Hidcote, Blue Mountain, Munstead Dwarf and Major. Other species suitable for low-growing hedges are corokia, hebe, purple fringe flower, horopito, rosemary and many more. Talk to your local garden centre about your requirements for your site or look online for further information. ¢

Linda Reilly turned her passion for candles into a hobby to pass the hours away after having shoulder surgery. “My husband Anthony, myself and our daughter Katelyn moved to Kaipara a year ago from Kaukapakapa,” says Linda. “We moved here for a better lifestyle. We have an orchard, sheep, chickens, cattle, guinea fowl and dogs. The guinea fowl are great as they forage and eat unwanted bugs.” The Reillys immigrated from Ireland in 2005. “Anthony’s sister had moved to New Zealand and kept asking us to come. It was a big decision to make as Katelyn was only four, and I come from a large family. “At the time, Ireland wasn’t doing well financially. It had gone from the Celtic Tiger to an era of financial fear — people couldn’t pay their mortgages and were struggling. “We decided to come and start a new life and haven’t regretted it one bit. “Last October, I had surgery and was off work. I have always had a passion for candles, so I explored making my own to keep myself occupied. “I did an online course in Introduction to Essential Oils and watched lots of YouTube videos. My second name is Rose, so I called my brand LRose Candles. “Katelyn helped design my labels, Instagram and Facebook pages, and we decided to sell them at the Paparoa markets on Saturdays.

“There is something warming about candles. I find them very relaxing. They give rooms a special ambience — some fragrances bring back happy memories. “If you enjoy crafting, candle making is very therapeutic. It is a lovely hobby, even if it is for your own use. “We use recycled jars and soy wax, which is eco-friendly. The wax is melted at a certain temperature, and you keep the temperature in check as you add the fragrance. It is then left to cool before slowly pouring it into the vessels. “There are also different wick sizes. p Linda Reilly has spent many hours perfecting her craft of candle making If the wick is too small, it will burn too slow, and you won’t have a nice flame. “We like to remind people that wax has memory, “You can add seashells and crystals to make them meaning that if your candle doesn’t burn to the edges, special. Advanced Solar Hot Water systems are a NO BRAINER. New Zealand’s high scepticism towards solar energy GOVT does not promote solar energy as part of the future energy mix and there is still a lot of confusion and scepticism. There is a huge lack of correct education on solar energy. In the NZ hot water industry we still see on-going issues with bad plumbing practice, low performance and short lifespans. Many SHW systems in NZ are NOT state-of-the-art compared to the rest of the world. NZ is not keeping pace with the rest of the world.

Solar hot water systems are a NO brainer and save more money than solar power. Electrical hot water cylinders have huge standing losses which are directly reflected in high energy bills. More than 80% of buildings use electricity for hot water production in a very in-efficient way. The SHW state-of-the-art systems though can produce as much as 900 kWh/m2/year while a solar power system actually only produces 200-220 kWh/m2/year. A small SHW of less than 3 m2 can easily cover 70 % of the yearly hot water needs for a 4-persons family and saving electricity at a dollar for a dollar price.

Large SHW on Auckland apartments at Aroha Ave

Economic evaluation and life expectancy? If you install a state-of-the art SHW system, the energy provider has no financial control on your savings or feed-in tariff unlike Solar Power systems. The energy savings are always created at the highest electricity tariff. If you install a state-of-the-art SHW you can save easily 700-900/year at 30 ct./kWh ( incl. GST) in a normal household situation. Pay-back times are proven to be 7-9 years and the life expectancy is more than 30 years.

CONCLUSION The use of advanced SHW can contribute significantly to reduce the ecological footprint and energy bill of every New Zealander.

p Kelly Bradburn decided to make donuts her career to bring people joy after many years as a vet nurse

The joyful donut u by Ann van Engelen

Based in One Tree Point, Kelly Bradburn has become known as the donut lady after changing her career from veterinary nursing to allow for family time. “I am a veterinary nurse by trade, and my husband Regan is a marine cabinetry installer. He works on some very nice yachts in Whangārei,” says Kelly. “Regan has been in the business for a good 20 years. He has also done kitchen cabinetry and did a building apprenticeship too. “I was born in Hokianga, and my family moved to Whangārei during my

“I became a vet nurse as I have always loved animals. As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I decided to become a nurse because I wanted to care for the animals after they had their operations rather than make the big medical decisions. “I loved helping pets that came in sick get better or improve in health. There was so much joy seeing the owners

the cost of human health care, not animal healthcare. “If we didn’t have human healthcare subsidies, we would have a better understanding of animal care costs. “The equipment and drugs are expensive, so is the cost of getting a vet qualification. Vets need to know more than doctors as animals and birds can’t tell you what is going on.

For me, you can’t go past the classic jam and cream donut — it is always a favourite

last couple of years at primary school. Regan moved there when he was four years old with his family from Paeroa. “Regan and I relocated to Australia together when we were both 21 for a change of scenery. It was a great experience, and we made some amazing friends. We both learned to surf while we were there and camped all-yearround, enjoying the outdoor lifestyle Australia has to offer. Before we knew it, we had been on the Sunshine Coast for nine years.

relieved and happy that we were able to help their pet. “As staff, when an animal doesn’t make it, you feel it. It is awful for everyone concerned. You actually feel every loss, and you feel sad for the owners. At times, it is the right decision to put an animal out of pain. Other times, we do all we can to save them but are unsuccessful. “People often don’t understand the cost of vet bills. I tell them the reason is because the government subsidises

”A vet and his staff want nothing more than to ensure an animal gets the best of care to survive, and they always want a happy outcome.” Upon returning to New Zealand, Kelly took a career shift. “When we returned from Australia, we wanted to start our family and moved to Taranaki. New Plymouth was amazing. We loved the beaches, mountains and countryside but it was too cold for us — so we returned to Whangārei. We then came to One Tree Point and having had

p Kelly says she gets excited creating special donuts for occasions such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day

our children I needed a job that worked around our family life at home. “One day, I saw some donut pictures on social media and thought they looked really tasty. I started reading success stories, and because I love hosting parties and giving people good food, I decided to have a go. It just happened that my father-in-law loves donuts — so I experimented on him.” Kelly says it took a lot of trial and error, but for her, the process of making donuts is simple — it is the end result that excites her. “I finally began my business three months ago and love hearing how many people are enjoying my products. It brings me joy knowing people are filling their bellies with my creations. “My cooking is about what people love, and I get inspiration from places like social media, cookbooks and magazines. I love thinking about possible flavour combinations like coffee and chocolate or raspberry and white chocolate. “The technical term for them is doughnut rather than donut as it is a nut made from dough, but I don’t

have the hole in mine. I make brioche whole donuts, and they are full of the good stuff. “For me, you can’t go past the classic jam and cream donut — it is always a favourite. “My preparation starts with making the dough so they can rise in the fridge overnight. I then get up early and weigh each donut and hand roll each one before leaving them to rise.” The donuts are then cooked, cooled and filled. “I believe in using a lot of filling. I make a big cavity in the centre and fill it right up with the cream I am using. My absolute favourites are the Nutella and the jam and cream. Most are covered in a cinnamon-sugar mix or icing sugar. “Brioche is the type of dough I use. It has yeast in it and is left to rise overnight to give it extra flavour. It is also fried, not baked. Unfortunately, I am unable to make gluten-free at this stage. “It took a lot of trial and error to perfect my recipes. Some are from choosing bits and pieces from other recipes and adapting them to my liking.

“When experimenting, I had some not rising, and then I discovered that at times the weather can affect them too, especially if it is humid. “I had to also learn to cook donuts in oil, which is not easy if you haven’t done it before. There have definitely been a lot of failures, including flavour mixes. Some flavour combinations just didn’t work at all. “I love making special orders for various occasions. At present, I am considering my Easter range, and at Christmas, I had a Do It Yourself kit for families to have fun at home. “The kits came with marshmallows, buttercream, decorations and fillings in the sets. Children loved them. “I am making heart-shaped ones for Valentine’s Day, and they are really special. I am offering a special pack of four, including two mini donuts. I think it is lovely when people send them to their grandparents, parents or friends as a happy treat. “I am a one-man-band and cook in my council-registered kitchen. I do everything from design to creation and

delivery. At present, I deliver from One Tree Point and Ruakākā to Waipū. “I sell online through my Donut Joy Facebook or Instagram pages. I am always happy to send little personal notes when needed, whether it is a thank you or an I love and appreciate you message. “On days when I shouldn’t be in the kitchen, I find myself still getting my ingredients out to try new combinations. Hubby is my number one taste tester, and my neighbours are pretty good at it too. “My father-in-law is still a classic long donut from the bakery kind of guy. If I have leftover dough, I make him a special long donut with sugar and cream, but he does eat the others because he says he will never say no to a good donut. “There is no real way to keep a donut fresh — they are best eaten the day you purchase them. I get so much delight knowing that people enjoy my donuts. There is nothing nicer than seeing my creations make other people so happy.” ¢
