She began working with Plunket families in 2019 and adores it there. “I enjoy supporting the community. I hear from people about what is important and of interest to them. I love living outside of the city. I like the quietness of it, but it means there are fewer people, so there is more reason for parents to come to our local groups.” Ema facilitates playgroups at Wellsford Plunket, 90 Rodney Street on Tuesdays between 10am–11.30am and Fridays from 9.30am–11.30am. Plunket is every Monday 9.30am– 12.30pm. The Dargaville Plunket coffee group is every second Wednesday from 10am–11.30am. For information on these groups, visit facebook.com/ PlunketKaipara. “For me, a highlight is seeing the difference that connections make between children and parents. I enjoy the wide variety of people who attend and have the opportunity to be in a family-friendly space. I love working with families.” Ema says that a helpful tool for parents is the 24/7 PlunketLine — 0800 933 922. Anyone can call it for support and advice on any parent-related topic and speak directly with a Plunket nurse. ¢

A golden opportunity u by Ann van Engelen

Waipu-based artist illustrator Evan Heasman is still excited to have been involved with a project for singer Ed Sheeran for his album, which was released at the end of last year. “Ed wanted to put out an album of his own with no music videos,” says Evan. “The album was a creative mission of 14 songs with creative people from 14 different countries making a video for each song.” A friend tagged Evan in the call-out post, prompting him to consider applying. “I thought I’d never get the opportunity as I only do illustrations. I thought about my friend Chris, who I’ve worked with on a few things, and he loves to animate my work, so I tagged him. “Chris thought we should go for it, so I applied, and to my surprise, Ed chose us. We were given a song called Punchline and had to come up with

the concept for the music video to accompany it. “We had to create it in a very short time, which was interesting, as my work is made up of lots of tiny parts and then Chris has to animate it. I was the director and illustrator, and Chris was the producer and animator. “It was an amazing experience and so much fun. I got to do everything that I love to do. We spent many days and nights working with the tight deadline. “I thought there would be a lot of toing and froing with Ed’s team, but it went perfectly, and we didn’t have to change a thing. It still feels like a blur. Punchline is a bit of a sad song about the loss of

a relationship, but it worked in well with animation. It was more than a privilege to work for Ed. “We were told he personally selected us through what we put forward, and he loved what everyone from each country had done. People can see our video on YouTube titled Ed Sheeran — Punchline (a fan-created music video). “Now I’m working on my own picture book with very few words, which I have had an idea brewing for some time. At

the end of each year and the beginning of the next, I always have time on my hands, so it’s nice to focus on an idea for myself. “I have no idea of what will become of it — so I will see what happens with it later. “I’m enjoying creating with the freedom of doing it for myself while putting my creative mind to use. I love what I do. You just have to keep following your passion.” ¢

Adding community variety u by Ann van Engelen

The newly formed Mangawhai Lions Club secretary, Mandy Hebben, felt the call to the area after spending a year as a weekender with a cabin at Riverside Holiday Park. “The lure of Mangawhai, compared to the hustle and bustle of Auckland was too strong, and we moved here permanently four years ago,” says Mandy. “I’m very excited to be a part of the newly formed Lions Club as I know the benefits to local communities and the fantastic social and family outlet.” Mandy has been a Lions member for nearly 10 years. “My father had been in Thames Lions when I was a child, and I saw first-hand many of the wonderful things they did. “I first joined to meet new friends and connect with other locals. I was in a senior management role involving travel, and it was a great way to give back to the community. “Prior to moving to Mangawhai, I was the Lions Clubs NZ business manager and looked after the membership needs for New Zealand and the South Pacific

clubs, head office logistics, accounts and marketing. “It’s a club that the whole family has been involved in. My partner, children and parents have all assisted with various community projects and enjoyed working together. “Lions give a sense of community pride as you make new connections. An example of this was a fellow Waipu Lion, who is also the chair of the Promote Waipu Association, who learned of my marketing background.” Mandy was quickly drafted on to the Promote Waipu team and now helps look after marketing. “It’s an opportunity that would never have come about otherwise. We’re currently planning the 2025 Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival and are delighted to be bringing this iconic event back to Mangawhai after a few years’ hiatus.

Correction Last week, page 13 of The Weekend Lifestyler named Robert Guy as the only All Black from Waipu to date. It should have named Richie Guy (positioned in the centre of the middle row) as the only All Black from Waipu. We apologise for this error.

p Mandy Hebben appreciates the many initiatives the Lions Club is involved in

“We’re also planning a stopover event for the Rowing For Life Team, which is rowing from Stewart Island to Bluff, then Bluff to Cape Reinga. “They’re raising funds for the Lions Clubs Cancer Trust Skin Cancer Screening vehicle, Child Cancer, Starship and Surf Life Saving. They’ll be in Mangawhai in mid-June. “We’re also meeting with MAZ and other groups to see how we can collaborate on community needs. It’s a common misconception that you need

heaps of time to join Lions and attend every meeting. You don’t. You attend when you can, and whatever projects interest you. “Some people love planning — others love ‘doing’. It’s whatever floats your boat. There’s something for you and best of all, you meet new friends and have fun. “Our next social get-together is on February 20. For more information, call Mandy on 021 419 224 or email mangawhailions@gmail.com.” ¢

u by Ann van Engelen

Five years ago, vice president of Promote Waipu, Gill Webb, left her busy business life in the city to begin her life as the landowner of a four-hectare block above Waipu Cove. “I was CEO of one of New Zealand’s largest rehabilitation companies, and it was a fun transition,” said Gill. “Having grown up in rural south Auckland I always favoured the country over the city life. The move to Waipu Cove allowed me to pursue my passion for conservation, gardening and small communities. “The journey has led to the discovery of a vibrant and connected community of Waipu.”

Evening, which will be run on Saturday, March 16, at Waipu Primary School, from 4.00pm to 8.30pm. “The night is in collaboration with the Whangārei District Council, which is a first for Bream Bay. “It is a family evening out and will commence with local entertainers and performers at 4.30pm. Food trucks will also be available or people can bring their own picnic. We are showing the movie Brave. It is outdoors and will commence

All said and done, we love it here in Waipu and would love others to join us Gill is currently the vice president of Promote Waipu, a predominantly volunteer organisation. “Promote Waipu connects the community and businesses in the area and runs events to attract people to the small town and surrounds. “The Promote Waipu committee consists of 10 local people with a wide range of skills from marketing, retailing, accounting, project management and governance. Many have or are running their own local businesses. “The focus presently on the event front is the upcoming Outdoor Movie

at 6pm on a huge LED screen. There will be prizes for the best-dressed families in theme with the movie. “Like all WDC events, the event is alcohol and vape-free, and if you’re bringing your four-legged family member — dogs need to be on a leash at all times. “Other events to look forward to include the Easter Street Markets, with more than 200 stalls and attracted in excess of 5,000 people last year. “The Waipu Winter Festival is scheduled across July with indoor ice skating, a barn dance and Matariki celebrations.

p As vice president of Promote Waipu, Gill Webb is passionate about seeing the town flourish

“To discover what’s happening from Promote Waipu, watch for our posts on community Facebook pages or visit promotewaipu.co.nz. The website also acknowledges local businesses that support our activities. “To join the committee or support our activities, find the membership forms on our website. Community members and

families can join for $30 a year, with bonus offers from business members. “Businesses can join us for $60 a year and be part of our promotion to the local community and wider community. “All said and done, we love it here in Waipu and would love others to join us and discover the joy in such a close and active community.” ¢

Tropical morning kickstarter u by Liz Clark

Many know the routine, waking in the morning and needing that cup of coffee to start the brain up for another day of work. It used to be the only way to get your coffee was to go to the supermarket or local cafe to get your favourite blend to last another week. In recent years, coffee plants have been imported into New Zealand for use as either house plants or out in a well-sheltered subtropical garden to add to the botanical collection. Coffee plants are easy to grow but require some specific considerations when maintaining optimum growing conditions and producing fruit at around three to four years from planting. This particular species grows in warm, humid tropical forests, so the conditions for your coffee tree need to be similar. Choose a site well sheltered from strong winds and frosts, preferably

beneath other trees where sunlight can filter through during the daytime. Before planting, ensure there is a deep layer of rich soil. The best option is to build a raised planting bed with compost mixed with peat-based potting mix or good-quality screened topsoil to give your plant a head start. Coffee plants also like the soil to be moist but not saturated. The soil pH should be 6–6.5, which is slightly acidic. Regular feeding with a weak solution of liquid fertiliser will keep the plant growing, then cut back in winter. It’s important to note coffee trees can grow quite large, so pruning them back to about 1.8m high will keep them manageable for harvesting the berries.

The plants need at least 50 per cent humidity to produce flowers, which are self-pollinating. Coffee berries are edible. An alternative red coffee can be made from dried skins, which might be worth looking into. Roasting green coffee beans is a messy business if done wrong. Research indicates that the best method is using the oven or buying a benchtop coffee roasting machine. Roasting the beans in a pan causes a lot of smoke, resulting in uneven roasting. There are several websites online advising on roasting techniques. Talk to your local nursery about availability and care tips, or look online for more information. ¢

p Patricia says she enjoys sharing her love for water species with students and the community

A desire for future generations u by Amy Fifita

Waipu local Patricia Clark has always had a passion for the water and the environment, and shares it with communities across Northland. “I grew up in the South Hokianga. I was born in Rawene, and I grew up on a dairy farm in Ōtaua. My parents still live there, and I have whakapapa connections to Kaikohe. I spent all of my childhood and schooling years there,” said Patricia. “I never got bored on the farm because there were always opportunities to do something. “There were rivers on there, and we would often play in them, and I enjoyed riding horses. It was a very cool upbringing, and I loved it. Through my upbringing and always spending time outdoors and in the rivers where I grew up, I developed a passion for water and the environment.

“At school, I had a passionate teacher called Mr A, and he’d teach us the Education for Sustainability curriculum. We used to go out on our school farm at Northland College to plant trees or other outdoor activities. He inspired me to study environmental science after I left school.” Patricia also studied for a bachelor of earth science at the University of Auckland. She completed her master’s degree in environmental science mainly focussing on freshwater ecology. With her qualifications, she moved to Mangawhai to work for the Te Uri O Hau Settlement Trust environmental team and began working part-time at the Mountains To Sea Conservation Trust’s

Whitebait Connection. She is now the national coordinator. “I enjoy working in the community and with students. I love taking them out into the field and showing them what creatures live in their local freshwater environments. It is inspiring to see, and I love teaching them about the importance of freshwater biodiversity and some of the challenges the environment faces.” Patricia also participates in half marathons and completed her first full marathon in 2023. She shares her passion for ecology with hiking and gardening, too. “I adore being outside. My aspiration through my work is for future generations to have the opportunity to experience

their environments and experience the same things. I want them to be inspired to take action and improve our environment. “Growing up, I used to do a lot of eeling. I never knew that there was a longfinned and short-finned eel — I thought they were the same. I enjoyed catching the biggest ones and eating them. “Now, I know that the long-finned eel is a threatened species, and it can take up to 100-plus years before they migrate and spawn near Tonga. I enjoy sharing that with students to create awareness about the long-finned eel. Eels are my favourite freshwater fish, and I want them to still be around for the future.” ¢

Prolan rust protects 52-metre sprayer

Customer Greg Lovett is stoked with the protection provided by a coating of New Zealand-made Prolan Extreme corrosion protection on his Agrifac Endurance 52-metre sprayer. Based in the South Island, Greg has an extensive horticultural operation growing all types of vegetables, onions, carrots, beetroot, oats, wheat and barley. As part of his operation, a large agricultural sprayer is used to apply liquid urea, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Greg made an enquiry to Prolan NZ asking if Prolan Extreme corrosion protection could be used to protect his agricultural gear. This environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin has International NSF food-grade approvals, so it fits perfectly with his horticultural operation. In July 2023, Chris, the maintenance manager at Lovett Farm, applied a coating of Prolan to the sprayer to coincide with the busy production period. The whole boom of the sprayer was washed down before the application and allowed to dry off. The product was applied using an airless/painttype sprayer available from retail stores such as Super Cheap or Repco. One litre of Prolan covers 8–10 square metres. Chris says: “An application of ‘Prolan’ is an easy process with minimal preparation required on the surface to be coated. The clean-up of the spray gear was easy, too,

with a quick clean of the sprayer with a hot water flush.” In January 2024, Chris did a quality check on all the gear in the business’s downtime. As part of this, the sprayer boom was checked for cracks and general maintenance was carried out. The Prolan coating was removed to see if there were any problems. Chris says: “To remove the Prolan Extreme, a hot wash high-pressure washer was applied to the boom. It took about three hours at temperatures above 100C to remove the Prolan coating — the whole process was easy.” The results speak for themselves, say Chris and Greg, “Unbelievable the boom returned to its original tiptop condition with no corrosion or parts replacement required. The Prolan remained on the surface; although it became dusty, the protection was there. Chris would recommend a coating to any machinery, even his father’s hedge shelter trimmer blades, for easy maintenance and protection.” Going forward, the team at Lovett Farms will be following a process of applying a Prolan coating to machinery and equipment

in the business downtime and then removing and recoating once a year. That ensures any problems are detected early, prevents parts replacement and the assets retain a very

A wellbeing trilogy u by Ann van Engelen

Charlotte Keirle became involved in yoga to gain more flexibility for her snowboarding sessions and now teaches others and promotes her breast care oil to help people feel if they have unexpected changes. “I grew up in England, and have been in New Zealand for 11 years,” says Charlotte. “I arrived in 2013 to coach and teach snowboarding. I was meant to return to Canada to teach and coach, but they didn’t get snow that winter, so a bunch of us couldn’t get our Canadian work visas.” Charlotte decided to stay and build a life in New Zealand.

entries. A company called Nitro gave me boards and things. “I would do tricks on rails and jumps. I enjoyed pushing myself to see what I could do on a snowboard. It was a lot of fun.” Charlotte says she loves the adrenalin of rushing down a mountain. “A mountain is like a blank canvas, and you can express your creativity as you can go most ways down the

Charlotte researched yoga as a way to add more flexibility to her life. “I had played a lot of sports and never did enough stretching, and felt yoga would help me gain flexibility. I found a yoga podcast, and it was amazing. “For about a year, I followed it daily, morning and evening, and found I became a lot more flexible and could do more on my board. After starting going

Flavio and I love living in the area. The people are really friendly, and it’s a great place to bring up children “My partner, Flavio, is from Mexico. He and a few friends came with work visas and ended up staying, too. “We met and were living in Auckland with our daughter, Xena, and decided to come up this way for a better lifestyle for her. I love surfing and skateboarding, and we have great waves here, and the skate park is fantastic, too. “When I was in Canada, I had a couple of sponsors and a snowboarding shop that would pay for my competition

mountain and jump off the cliff, a rock or a cornice. “Any way down is a great physical and mental challenge. For me, that was like a moving meditation. I felt when I was on the board, my mind was calm and still, even though my body was moving. “The sport is like a natural drug. I never took drugs because I never felt I needed to. I believe no drugs would compare to that natural adrenaline and feeling.”

to classes and coaching snowboarding, I decided to become a yoga teacher as well, so I could do that when I’m not coaching snowboarding. “I found a teacher at Satyananda Yoga in Australia, and that worked well for me. I also went to Ashram’s yoga intensive study for two weeks and then did selfstudy. I did 1,400 hours over two and a half years.” Charlotte became a qualified instructor in 2018.

A mountain is like a blank canvas, and you can express your creativity as you can go most ways down the mountain and jump off the cliff, a rock or a cornice “Study was a good way of emerging into it. As part of the study, you had to do your own practice each day, and I loved how I felt afterwards. “Previously, I would go into a class stressed and anxious with different moods and emotions. With these classes, I felt more balanced and peaceful than I had ever felt in my life. “I think it was the mix with the meditation, which was normally an hour and a half class. It wasn’t too difficult either. It was more about closing your eyes and noticing how you personally feel. “It was the internal focus on how the practitioner feels rather than external appearances.” With an interest in natural health, Charlotte also created a breast oil with essential oils to help people understand how their breasts feel. “I was interested in natural health and studied aromatherapies. I did a diploma in Advanced Aromatherapy in 2012, with the idea that I would use it one day, but didn’t do much with it at the time.

“With that, I had been using essential oils and noticed how amazing they were. “A few years ago, a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I realised there wasn’t much around to prevent it. My friend was only 30 and very healthy. She often competed in triathlons. “I realised this happens to lots of people, and wondered how we could know ourselves if something feels different, rather than discovering a change at stage four with a doctor. “I thought about the importance of knowing how our breasts feel all the time and came up with the idea of making a breast care oil. “The idea is to put the oil on your breasts after a shower or bath daily or weekly so that you learn how they feel day to day. That way, if there is a change, you should be able to feel it. “It is about taking our power into our own hands rather than being uncomfortable about feeling our breasts. My friend’s diagnosis made me check myself, and I found lumps. My doctor did a scan and found little cysts. Thankfully,

they weren’t serious. After the diagnosis, I spoke to an acupuncturist friend, who said if I massaged the area, it would help break the cysts down and help them to disappear. “I have been using the oil ever since. A few years later, when I was pregnant, I used it on my tummy and never got stretch marks. Then, I had a caesarean, and it helped with the scar tissue. “The oil was good when my nipples were sore from Xena breastfeeding, too, because the things the hospital gave me didn’t work. My oil helped to relieve the pain within an hour. “When I made the oil, I wanted it to be organic and have the best oils in it, so it has frankincense, which is good for healing the skin and scar tissue. Research has shown it can stop skin cancer and help with soreness as well. “I use rose oil because it’s good for the heart and grief. They say we have a lot of grief and emotions in the heart area, and our breasts are where our heart is. Our emotions can also be helped by massaging the oil in the area.

“There’s chamomile, which is soothing and helps with stress. It’s very calming and is lovely on the skin, along with vanilla, which helps create emotional balance as well. “The oil has skin tissue benefits and it’s great at nighttime with sleep, stress and overwhelm. My website is foynz. com. FOY stands for fountain of youth. “I came up with the name when I was studying essential oils and aromatherapy. My yoga classes and meditations are on the same website. I will be at the Earthbeat Festival, on the autumn equinox, which is March 21 to 24, with my oil. “I hold my yoga sessions at the Mangawhai Library Hall on Mondays from 10am to 11am and Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm. It’s only $10 per person because I want my sessions to be accessible to everyone. “With things being so expensive now, I’d rather have more people in a class, so they can get the benefits for themselves. “Flavio and I love living in the area. The people are really friendly, and it’s a great place to bring up children.” ¢

Providing active opportunities u by Amy Fifita

The Kaiwaka Sports Association invites people to the Top of the Rock fundraiser event on Sunday, March 17 at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex. “I come from a community-minded family,” said secretary Lindell Ferguson. “I grew up in Mangawhai in the 1980s when it was a small farming locality with a four-classroom school. Back then, if you wanted to do anything, you pulled a team of people together and made it happen. “I’ve lived in Kaiwaka for 28 years but have lived and worked close by in neighbouring communities my whole life. I’m a mother of three active young adults, Hamish, Brenda

past. She says the administrative work is enjoyable. “Growing up, people gave me the opportunity to play sports and engage in the Girl Guides and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I’m now unable to play sports myself, so volunteering is a way for me to give back. I’ve learned new skills, particularly with funding applications and liquor licensing requirements. “It’s a pleasure to see people using the new outdoor sporting equipment I’ve introduced to the complex through

and Gareth. They’ve enjoyed many sporting and recreational activities in the area. “The people in Kaiwaka are like a big extended family. I believe in the adage that it takes a village to raise a child. The skills I don’t have can be provided by another, and we should all work together to keep that old-fashioned community spirit alive.” Lindell recently started the new role as the KSA secretary, although she has been involved in the event in the

There’s outdoor social volleyball equipment to come in the near future.” Top of the Rock began in 2000 and is returning this year following cancellations due to Covid and the weather. “The volunteer team is made up of the KSA committee and people who help on the day or with event organising. “People can run or walk five kilometres or 10km, and there is also a free children’s bike ride (under 11 years old). This year, participants can camp at the sports complex free of charge.” Visit the Kaiwaka Top of the Rock 2024 Facebook page or email ksa.pres23@ gmail.com for more information. ¢
