p Gay Benn’s Frida Kahlo dolls are handmade using upcycled clothing and jewellery that she found at op shops

Honouring an artist In our first Weekend Lifestyler last year, we told the story of Kaiwaka resident Jeanette Suckling’s mother, Gay Benn, creating her dolls inspired by Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter. Gay’s love for art, drawing and creativity meant each doll models fashion inspired by what Frida wore, made with upcycled material from items Gay sourced at op shops, including lace.

The faces are hand-painted, and the jewellery style Frida loved was made by pulling old jewellery and things apart to make the tiny necklaces. Each doll has some sort of prop, whether it be a little basket, watermelons or paint pallets with a paintbrush in the doll’s hand. She made Frida’s pet spider monkeys, parrots, baskets of fruit and small cigars as well. ¢

p Lucy Smith delights in sourcing a variety of beautiful fabrics for herself and other people

A haberdashery treasure chest Lucy Smith shared how when she moved back to the Waipū area with her family in late 2022, she brought her grandmother Joan’s love of fabric with her. With the decision to make her own clothing, Lucy wanted to use highquality, fun fabrics to suit her personality and began her online store Joan’s Fine Fabric.

“I chose linen from Europe because they have a strong history of weaving linen there,” said Lucy. “I grew up in a sewing family, and my mum made all our clothes when I was a child, but I didn’t begin sewing until I inherited my nana Joan’s sewing machine a few years ago. When I received it, I decided that I wouldn’t buy clothes but make my own.” ¢

Marko and Vesna Tanaskovic moved to Mangawhai from Serbia in August 2022 with an opportunity to be involved in the bee industry and to give their daughter Lena the chance to live in a war-free country. With a career in playing and teaching cello, Vesna decided to use her talent to help other people learn about the instrument that is close to her heart.

Growing up in Waipū, professional firefighter Laura Andrews explained how she was accepted to ski 920km from the Ronne Ice Shelf to the South Pole, celebrating 150 years since the birth of legendary polar explorer Roald Amundsen. “The expeditions follow historical journeys to share the legacy and continue it on for the next generation to gain inspiration and an interest in

p Neville at the Hakaru Anzac service paying his respects to those who lost their lives in war

p Billie Hopkins says the camaraderie of the emergency services is an important factor in being a team member

Memories of service

For team and community

Hakaru Returned Services Association member Neville Andrew told us of his many memories of his days in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as one of thousands taking time to commemorate Anzac Day in 2023. As a young boy, Neville Andrew would observe the Mustang fighters fly over his house in Dargaville and decided he wanted to join the air force and serve his country. Neville joined the air force

Ruakākā resident Billie Hopkins told us how she followed in her mother’s footsteps and joined the local fire brigade in 2015 as a result of observing her mum enjoy her involvement in the service. “We lived in Ahipara, and mum joined because she always heard the sirens going off and realised becoming a firefighter was a way she could give back to the community and never looked back,” said Billie.

in 1959, retiring as a warrant officer in 1987 and later moving to Mangawhai. Upon retiring, Neville took a great interest in ensuring history is kept alive and spent many hours posting photos of interest on the Hakaru RSA Facebook page. Through his interest, he also encourages past and present service people to join the RSA, where they can get support and enjoy the camaraderie of other members. ¢

“I then moved back to Takahiwai to look after my nana. Mum followed and transferred to the Ruakākā brigade, and I decided to do it, too, and help our community.” Billie is a mother of three children and says she commits to the emergency services to support her community. Her decision to join the fire service was not made lightly, and she encourages others to consider becoming an integral part of the emergency services. ¢

Lemon trees can be grown in large pots in a courtyard or on a sunny deck if space is an issue. They can be planted in autumn until late spring, just before the summer heat. Choose a variety to suit your taste and requirements for culinary or making lemonade and other delights to enjoy.

Rosa gallica, or the French rose, has a history going back thousands of years, cultivated by the ancient Greeks and Romans and later in mediaeval Europe. Until the 19th century, this rose was considered the most important cultivar from the Rosa genus. The gallica is a parent species of several

p Pauline Wilson says volunteering at Hospice is one way that she can help the community

The joy of volunteering

Memories of a lifeguard

December saw a lot of community excitement with the opening of the new North Haven Hospice store in Mangawhai, across from Carters at 41c Moir Street, Mangawhai. Pauline Wilson told us her story of why she chose to volunteer to help the organisation. “I love Hospice because the organisation is such a great communityfocussed initiative, helping people who

p Tom Long and his partner Barbara Hilden enjoyed time together, appreciating all New Zealand has to offer

p Peter Panyoczki has had an interest in art since he was a young boy

An experience appreciated

The brilliance of art

2023 saw the Mangawhai community farewell Mangawhai Museum manager Thomas Long as he returned to Canada with his partner Barbara Hilden. Tom told us they fell in love with New Zealand as tourists in 2019. Two years later, with a passion for history, the pair found themselves managing the Mangawhai Museum and The Kauri Museum in Matakohe, respectively. They say New Zealand, both museums and the volunteers they worked alongside, will always be in their hearts.

Highly regarded mixed media artist who works in a variety of forms and mediums, such as sculpture, paint, installation photography and digital technology, internationally renowned Peter Panyoczki and his wife Tatjana call Kaiwaka home. Peter escaped from Budapest to Switzerland with his family as a child after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He took up an interest in art and became wellknown worldwide for his sophisticated art using real objects as he created

“Barbara’s mum became unwell in Canada, and we always said family comes first, so we made the heartbreaking decision to resign our positions and return home,” said Tom. “It broke our hearts, but family has to come first. It’s hard to put into words our appreciation of the volunteers here. Their passion and dedication mean a lot, and it shows the community spirit in New Zealand helps our museums thrive with happiness and smiles.” ¢

laconic metaphoric statements of the philosophical order. “As a child, I had a passion for drawing, which led me to read books,” he said. “I had a great album of Leonardo da Vinci’s artworks, and I would redraw the pictures. In my youth, I became seriously interested in literature and then in linguistics and art theory. I decided to study these subjects at the University of Zürich but never stopped drawing.” ¢

p Phil and Rowena Paikea are firm believers that men with personal issues can turn their lives around with the right help and support

p John has enjoyed making wooden shields, feathers, fish and other items over the years

Positive family choices

A heart for art

Based in Ruakākā, Safe Man Safe Family facilitator Phil Paikea told us that after years in gangs and living a negative life, he made the decision to turn his life around for good and protect his family. Phil says he’s proud to see other men work on their life trauma and create a

more positive life for themselves and their families. “Our saying is, ‘If the man is safe, our family is safe’,” says Phil. “If our family is safe, our community is safe. If our community is safe, our society is safe, and if our society is safe, our nation is safe.” ¢

John Ecuyer shared his artistic journey with us and how he had enjoyed working on a variety of projects over the years, particularly his recent pounamu beads and wooden shields, which he began creating when he had ill health. “One of the best moves I made was joining the Mangawhai Artists group,” said John. “I think we’re the privileged generation that had the opportunity to turn skills into art. I visited

Akaroa, and a guy in a tiny shop was turning wood, and tourists off the boats were buying stuff left, right and centre. I thought, ‘Gosh, there’s an opportunity’, and came home and set myself up to do woodturning. I made bowls and hollow forms following the American trend. “I did more carving and painting and over time made big shields. The shields gave me the scope to use metals, paints, carving and staining.” ¢

p Mark and Pav Stacey love having their alpaca at their farmstay property based in the hills at Waipū

p Keeley Dunn says she is honoured to be welcomed by her husband Matiu’s family at Oruawharo Marae

Companions at farmstay

A hands-on healing choice

Pav Stacey told us how she has loved animals her whole life and fell in love with alpacas after seeing them at the Fieldays a few years after moving to New Zealand from England. She also fell in love with the native bush and country lifestyle. Along with her husband Mark, Pav now owns Kandiah Alpacas and Farmstay in the hills near Waipū, where people can visit their farm and meet the curious, intelligent animals.

Keeley Dunn shared her Trails End rongoā journey and how helping people with their health issues is an important part of her life calling. “I am Māori but was brought up in Pākehā ways,” says Keeley. “I found my whakapapa five years ago and have since transitioned myself from 33 years of Native American Indian to Māori beliefs. I’ve always been very spiritual and practised as a shaman for many years. When I was

“Alpaca originate in South America, mainly Peru,” says Pav. “They are gentle, intelligent and easy to handle, each with its own personality. In June 2003, Mark suggested I join the Alpaca Association, thinking I’d get them out of my system, but I didn’t. By January 2004, I bought my first pregnant female, paying for it to be looked after.” ¢

three years old, I had a knowing, and at 18, I had spiritual reading done, and that led me to research American Indian ways with meditation and systems. I found an Indian prayer book, and that is what started my journey off as a shaman healer. “Native plant-based remedies are an integral part of rongoā treatment, and I had to learn the correct method of harvesting and making them, too.” ¢

p Dee Jones is delighted The Aspie Book is a tool that many people will be able to use

p Jeanette Vickers enjoys spending time taking photos of colourful subjects

World first for author

Inspired by colour

In 2023, well-known counsellor Dee Jones launched her much-requested book called The Aspie Book, written to help neurodivergent and neurotypical people better understand themselves and each other. “Professor Tony Attwood wrote the foreword. He is one of the top three Aspie specialists in the world, and I am honoured that he read the whole book and wrote the foreword,” said Dee.

Artist, Jeanette Vickers can often be found with her camera in hand, photographing things of colour, creating images of beauty whilst exploring nature at its best. Growing up in a small town, Jeanette says she has always had a love for nature. Through years of capturing images with her camera, she explained how she now enjoys exploring the colours of nature, whether reflections in water

“My mum said when I was three, she often found me talking to people who were struggling. When I was five, someone explained what a counsellor was, and I knew then that that was what I wanted to do with my life. I was one of the lucky people knowing what I wanted to do. People absolutely fascinate me. Some kids want to know how a hair dryer works and take it apart to see. I wanted to find out how people work.” ¢

I love my photography and intend to stick to it.” ¢

p Andy Bruce loves the creativity he is able to achieve behind the lens of his camera

Girl on the move Master of the lens Local small flock shearer Shanelle Kemp told her story of growing up in Kaipara, spending many hours in the shearing shed with her father, Martyn. Now the fifth generation of her family to follow a career in shearing, she loves helping people with small flocks to maintain their fleece and other animal care needs. Shanelle and her partner Danny love the outdoors and creating a positive

lifestyle with their sons Austin and Riley. “I’ve always been around sheep and have 40 of my own,” said Shanelle. “My dad Martyn would take me on jobs from eight months old. When I was 15 years old, I crutched 900 sheep. That was my prime years of fitness — you don’t feel the pain at that age. Now I shear a comfortable 230 in an eight-hour day.” ¢

When Andy Bruce moved to Mangawhai, he said he had no idea that photography would become his passion. As the owner of Elevated Media, he loves being involved in the local community, helping people with their business video concepts, and spending his time capturing moments in nature. Photographing local wildlife and people involved in their everyday activities, such as surfing, is where Andy can be found most days.

“When my family and I moved to Mangawhai from the North Shore in Auckland, it didn’t take long for us to realise that living here was one of the best decisions we’ve made,” says Andy. “My love for photography has come through since I started my business, Elevated Media, six years ago. I generally work with clients based on their goals to increase sales revenue or to help answer questions their customers may have.” ¢

We heard how Morgan ChandlerBruce’s love of horses began at a young age with her mum working in the horse racing industry. As Morgan got older, her love turned into a passion to help save the wild Kaimanawa horses. Morgan told us that she has found every horse she has met has taught her something in life, and she appreciates every opportunity she has had.

“Each year, the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society and the Department of Conservation muster and rehome wild horses to help keep the numbers down on the ranges. The horses are delivered to their new owners or to a trainer to get them used to being handled. There are approximately 20 Kaimanawas up here in Northland that I know of, and that is a beautiful thing.” ¢
