p Holidaymakers flocked to Mangawhai, as Northland experienced a massive summer surge in visitors due to restricted international travel and the region’s appealing weather and attractions
Even before holidaymakers arrived in massed numbers, Northland had performed well in the last quarter of 2020. It led ASB Bank’s economic ‘scoreboard’ for economic growth as the year came to a close. The region went from seventh to first in a three-month span. Part of this boom has been the necessity for Kiwis to holiday at home, even for short breaks. Mangawhai was well placed to make the most of this trend, with locals welcoming a record number of visitors. “It would have to be the busiest summer ever,” said Opportunity Factory manager Vicki Cagan. “There was perhaps an extra 25 per cent again above normal summer numbers. During peak season you could hardly move in the shop, even early in the morning. We’d try to restock and new items out would be gone when you turned around. It’s been wonderful for the community.” Fellow retailers Ocean Gypsy tell a similar tale. Owner Clare and store manager Rachel appreciate the usual summer surge. However, Rachel reiterates that this year has been exceptional, calling it the busiest she’s seen in 17 summers. “We’ve managed to handle the numbers, and we’ve kept that laid back, relaxed and positive vibe that makes Mangawhai special,” she says. All across town, it seems to have

been the same. Local butcher Dan Klink has been busy providing meals for the ‘army’ of barbecue enthusiasts camping in Mangawhai, while the team at Dizzy Lizzy’s has helped refresh and revive thousands of patrons across what they call ‘the biggest New Year’s — ever’. Opinion is divided on how Mangawhai may adapt to handle such large numbers if, as some in the street opine, this is not simply a case of Covid-year holiday choices, and is instead the new normal. It’s a 50/50 split when you ask locals about the efficacy of new parking and one-way rules in Wood Street. One man, when questioned, pointed to a large SUV parked on double yellow lines, noting that this was now a common occurrence. One business owner who asked not to be named said that supply trucks stopping to unload now blocked the entire street, but it was safer for pedestrians. Parking, boat ramps and toilet facilities were also mentioned as ‘pinch points’ during the unusually busy summer. The main sentiment expressed was that Mangawhai would thrive by welcoming visitors, so long as public amenities kept up with the obvious demand and the town’s character remained friendly and unhurried. ¢

Petition to save the sand

Posters have sprung up all across Mangawhai in support of an issue that has polarised opinions and instigated spirited debate among locals; the matter of sand mining off the Bream Bay coast. While proponents of the mining work cite the multimillion-dollar resource as necessary for local economic growth, and a vital part of the construction industry supply chain, those opposed, point to potentially catastrophic environmental ramifications. An online petition has been launched to deny resource consent to the company operating sand dredges off the coast. Calls for an end to the practice are getting more vociferous on social media and amongst the public. The community action group Stop Sand Mining calls this 1,500 tonne a week harvest a ‘global environmental crisis’. ‘This act destroys everything in its path, leaving a 16km length of dust fumes. Onshore it causes foreshore and dune erosion,’ they say in an online statement supporting their petition. ‘The single largest nearshore sand mining activity in the developed world is happening right on our doorsteps along the magical coasts of Mangawhai, Te
Arai, Forestry and Pakiri. Sand mined from these areas is irreplaceable and is leading to the destruction of entire ecosystems. There is no other developed country which allows nearshore sand mining of this nature.’ The petition’s primary aim is to have resource consent denied for sand mining operations that are already underway but require a renewal. Barge and suction hose dredges have long operated off the Pakiri and Mangawhai coastline as part of an established supply chain for construction quality sand. A resource, which is in short supply globally. Not all sand is created equal, and to keep building, say sand mining supporters, we need to harvest this resource. Opponents counter that there are other sources of sand available. Perhaps less economically appealing, but with less impact on the environment, including the habitat of the endangered fairy tern.

A feathered friend in the forest u by Liz Clark
The high-pitched call of the endemic, gregarious New Zealand fantail is an iconic sound associated with native bush and gardens throughout the country.
The North Island fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) is one of four recognised subspecies of its type. It is found throughout urban and rural areas in the Kaipara District. These small birds with their distinctive fanned tail and pied markings often come within a metre or two near people. The birds come in two colour forms — pied, and more rarely, black. The pied is the most common colour variant. Adult pied fantails have a greyish head, prominent white eyebrows, brown back and rump. The breast and
belly are cinnamon, with white and black bands across the upper breast, and a long black and white tail. Juvenile pied fantails have mainly brown tones across the head and body, and lack the adult white eyebrows and chest bands. Their colouring is more reddishbrown on the breast, eyebrows and the tips of the primary flight feathers. Fantails nest from August to March with a clutch of two to five eggs laid. The chicks are fed by both parents on a diet of insects and fledge after two weeks. ¢

Success and planning for 2021 u by Corinne Smith, Altitude Advisors Ltd, director and chartered accountant
Happy New Year to you all. We hope the holiday season has been good to everyone, whether you managed to take a break or worked through in our busy summer town while the holidaymakers were here. The new year is upon us. I thought it would be appropriate to talk about a few topics, namely success and planning for 2021 and tips to make sure you are ‘Covid lockdown ready’ if this does arrive upon us again. I am hoping as business owners, you are feeling energised and ready to take on the world after a great break. Your focus needs to be on planning, so you can turn your inspiration thoughts you had during the holiday period into reality. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help steer you into 2021. What does success mean to you? That may seem like an obvious question. However, if you ask five different small business owners to define success — you will get five different answers. People start their businesses for different reasons, and everyone has different motivations. To achieve success, the first thing you need to do is define it and understand how to measure it. Write your vision down or create a picture. When you plan for success, write it down or create a visual image of it. Then make sure you print it out, frame it or put it somewhere you won’t lose sight of it. It will ensure you stay focussed while you’re busy with the day-to-day running of your business.
Create your plan with answers to what, when and how — the three key aspects that define business success. Answer these three questions to create your own definition of success: What will you achieve? When will you achieve it by? How will you measure your success? Measure your success in the five key ways outlined below. 1. Number of customers 2. Average revenue per customer 3. Cost and profit trends, at a total level or by specific product or service 4. Customer satisfaction levels 5. Return on investment from your marketing Be ready for challenges like a Covid Lockdown I do ask myself on a regular basis ‘if this happened again, what did I learn from last time, and what do I still need to do to be able to keep my business going?’ There are many learnings especially those related to the digital side of your business, eg websites, online shops and ordering systems, contactless payment options, fibre internet installed where it is on offer, supply chains, employees’ needs, etc — to name only a few. Let us know if you need a hand with anything, and we wish you all every success this year. ¢

Surf lifesavers’ busy summer
5
u by Andy Bryenton
Mangawhai’s population has grown to record levels during the summer break, with a vast number of these holidaymakers taking to the beach for some cool relaxation. That’s meant an extra vigilant year for local surf lifesavers. Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service media liaison Tony Baker confirmed that it had been a bumper year for beachgoers. He says the season is far from over, with school holidays stretching through into early February. The surf rescue volunteers have been involved in some dramatic action this year. However, it’s the more commonplace business of vigilance and community education which provides heightened safety for the regular swimmer or surfer at the popular spot. Surf volunteers approached just last week reiterated that following some simple rules and respecting the power of the ocean is paramount. A recent after-hours rescue by a former lifeguard and member of MHVLS, Dylan Finlay, is an example of how the seemingly tranquil beach can become dangerous. It’s just one of the critical rescue scenarios, which have unfolded in Mangawhai this summer alone, with some involving the Northland Rescue Helicopter as well as surf lifesavers. “Dylan Finlay was surfing at Mangawhai Heads when he noticed a brother and sister in trouble in a strong rip at the south end of the beach,” said
p Mangawhai surf lifesavers have had a busy time of it this summer, and the season is far from over
Mr Baker. “By the time he managed to get to them, they were both tired and very stressed out. Finlay managed to rescue both children, one who was in a ‘near-drowning’ state, submerged under the water. “His quick thinking and brave response no doubt avoided a certain tragedy.”

Musings over Musa u by Liz Clark
Once the bane of many gardens, the banana palm is making a comeback with an ever-increasing range of fruiting and ornamentals available to subtropical plant enthusiasts. As the genus for the banana is known, Musa encompasses more than 70 varieties, including ornamental types grown for their leaf colour rather than fruit. Regardless, bananas have a few requirements to be grown successfully in the garden or a pot. For the garden, the soil is the first thing to address. Much of Kaipara’s soil is clay with a high pH, in some locations, of 8.5 or higher, causing difficult growing conditions. Ideally, a deep layer of organic matter and compost combined with animal manure and good drainage will provide an ideal growing environment for the plants. If putting an ornamental banana in a pot, ensure a combination of good-quality compost and potting mix is used. Apply a mulch, such as fine bark or similar material, to prevent moisture loss during summer for garden and container plants. Keep the plants well watered during the summer months, especially when newly planted. Bananas thrive in sunny, north-facing situations sheltered from the prevailing wind. Plant in spring and early summer after the danger of frost has passed. It will ensure that any plants put in for fruit production will establish quickly and withstand light frosts if the outer leaves are large enough
to protect the growing tip. Cut off any dead leaves and layer around the base or put into the compost. Mature fruiting banana clumps produce new plants from suckers. Retain three suckers for each clump and discard the rest or replant in a new location. Flowering occurs after a plant has produced 42 leaves, once the fruit set has occurred the flower’s bulbous end should be broken off. Varieties to look for are Misi Luki, Dwarf Cavendish, Goldfinger and Blue Java. Ornamental varieties are grown for the flowers and leaf colouring. These types make excellent texture plants and are especially popular for container growing. Musa velutina produces deep pink flowers and seed-filled inedible fruit of the same colour. Also consider Musa zebrina, which has red splashes of colour in the leaves, Musa coccinea and Bordelon. The plants can be used to create a spectacular backdrop in a sheltered garden or a courtyard situation. Protect from frost during winter. Many of these banana varieties can be found at your favourite nursery, subtropical plant specialist or search online for available cultivars.

New CEO for rescue helicopter
Northland Rescue Helicopter has announced Craig Gibbons, a helicopter pilot with vast experience in the air ambulance sector, as its new CEO. Mr Gibbons was most recently general manager — operations at CareFlight, an Australia-wide aeromedical charity. “The Northland Rescue Helicopter has an incredible reputation around the world, and I am looking forward to ensuring we continue to provide a world-class air ambulance service for the region,” he says. “CareFlight and Northland Rescue Helicopter have the same goals, with both organisations committed to saving lives and serving local communities by providing the highest standard of rapid response critical care. With 2020 being the Northland rescue chopper’s busiest year on record, it highlights the importance of having a dedicated Northland rescue chopper service. “It is also clear to me that Northlanders and local businesses are hugely loyal supporters of the service, which is highlighted every year by the generosity they show during the annual appeal. It is that sort of support that helps keep our choppers in the air.” Mr Gibbons takes over from Paul Ahlers who stepped into the CEO role
temporarily following the retirement of long-time CEO and chief pilot Peter Turnbull. Mr Ahlers remains on the NEST board of trustees. “It is great to have a person with Craig’s experience and passion on board,” says Mr Ahlers. “We are looking forward to working with him to ensure we continue to provide the best air ambulance service possible at a time when we are more in demand than ever.” 2020 was a busy year for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service, finishing the year with 1,115 call-outs making it the busiest year in its 32year history. Despite the Covid-19 lockdowns, there was an increased demand for the service, alongside assisting with the country’s Coronavirus pandemic response. “There were several notable rescues including transporting a police dog to the Veterinary Specialist Group Clinic in Auckland for treatment after it was shot during an incident near Dargaville,” says general manager Vanessa Furze. “As demand continues to grow over the summer period, we want to thank

Bri Woolnough moved to Mangawhai one year ago after many visits to the township and discovering the positive opportunities Kaipara has to offer as a photographer. “When I finished school I went into hospitality, instead of university. I became a manager at a bar and restaurant in Auckland by the time I was 20 years old,” says Bri. “My mum moved to Mangawhai nearly three years ago, and I was visiting weekly and having surf lessons. I am also a photographer and was doing work for my cousin at Bread Box. Mangawhai felt like home, so I moved up permanently. “As a child, I always took disposable film cameras when I was horse riding, and to events, I went to. My poppa is a hobby photographer, and I borrowed his camera to do photography at high school. He then helped me get my own and still lends me his equipment. “I also attend workshops to upskill. I have done things like photographed the wild horses running
beside our car at Waiouru. It was an incredible experience. “I also went to the South Island for a landscape photography workshop in winter 2018 and photographed the Milky Way and the Church of the Good Shepherd. The scenery is very different

compared to up north. Sometimes if you miss the shot, experiencing the moment is just as special. “I used to be scared of the ocean, but ever since I started surfing, I have a new appreciation for it. Surfing isn’t easy to learn, but if you stick at it, it is worth it. I am loving it, especially with
practise over the last few months. I learned on a foam board which helped a lot. You feel like you are on a giant paddleboard and standing up is reasonably easy. “Being out on the water is very relaxing, you are so present — it is an amazing feeling. I had always wanted to live by the beach, and living near the forestry at Te Arai means I capture scenery that most people don’t see. “I recently purchased an underwater housing for underwater photography. This has created more opportunities for lifestyle photography. I love going on camping or beach missions. My goal is to do a big road trip and have a blog. I like taking photos the moment things are happening rather than try and plan a shoot.” Bri specialises in lifestyle and adventure photography through her business BW Photography.

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER January 22 2021
Bri Woolnough has enjoyed photography since she was a child, and started by using disposable film cameras while out horse riding and now encourages other people to travel through sharing her photos at BW Photography
“
Looking back on photos tells a story of who and where you are
“Landscapes naturally get tied into my work as I capture people as they are. At present, I am still building my brand, which is starting to take off. I enjoy finding creative ways to share people’s everyday lives such as a shoot I did for Mangawhai Honey. It is crazy how much inspiration you can find in the surroundings people live and work in. “Using a film camera as well as digital is fun and interestingly takes some pressure off. Because every shot costs you money, you have to really think about the pictures you take. It is a fun way to get back into photography, and you can now get film developed at an affordable price. The film isn’t that expensive either. “Even though I studied at school, I am very much self-taught and learned to work with photoshop and photo manipulation. In the past, as I was
learning how to work a camera, I would shoot and hope I got good images. Even though I have a big fancy camera now, I am still learning every single day. “It is crazy how you change your photography and editing style. You seem to always be evolving. I look back at my work from the beginning of last year until now ,and my style is completely different. To me, photographing people in their natural environment is easy. I love the inbetween moments where someone is making coffee, or waxing their surfboard, going on a hike or standing on a mountain. Capturing moments and having memories to look back on is so important. “Looking back on photos tells a story of who and where you are, the people you are with, the things you do and why. There is so much more to it than the image itself, and it is
”
cool to be able to tell not just your story, but other peoples’ as well. I like photographing surfers with underwater photography and would one day like to get dolphins. “My most memorable moments include camping with 10 others next to Lake Pukaki overlooking Mt Cook last winter. It was an amazingly clear night with a full moon. “Another time I was out surfing at Te Arai last March and the surfer Kelly Slater was there. He paddled over to me and had a chat and asked how my surf was going. It was funny because whenever Kelly tried to catch a wave, no one went for it. “A lot of people say I am always out on an adventure. I say New Zealand has so many wonderful places to explore. Nothing stops you going in a car to find incredible spots to camp. For other people interested in photography
I suggest you just get out there and shoot as much as you can. Don’t try to be someone you are not. The best photos are the ones that you want to take and the ones you like taking. Don’t copy someone else’s style. If it’s not your style, it won’t work as well. Do what makes you happy and what you want to shoot. “At present, I clean part-time with my mum. I would love to be a full-time photographer eventually and travel the world, or around New Zealand in my Land Cruiser, surfing and take my photography and work from where I want. “Photography is my passion, and I am loving life. Last year was full of good opportunities, and I had an awesome time. It was definitely a year to grow and learn, and I am stoked with how everything is going toward a positive career.” ¢

The Joseph Taylor vision

u by Ann van Engelen
Angela Chamberlain moved from Auckland with her family to Mangawhai two years ago and took the opportunity to bring her vision of a stylish interior design store, Joseph Taylor Homewares to life. “We were making road trips to Mangawhai with my children, Seth and Jackson, to the skatepark and fell in love with the town and the area,” says Angela. “The idea of starting an interior design store had been brewing in my heart for a long time. I was in Bali and had an ‘aha’ moment and saw a gap in the market here. I star ted with a container of Indonesian-inspired items such as cushions, throws, day beds and artwork. “Joseph and Taylor are my boys’ middle names, that is how I came up with the store name and Joseph Taylor was born. We created a pop-up store with the vision to be long-term, and the concept took off. “I was then fortunate to get space in the Orang Otang Tree Trimmers building at 126 Mangawhai Heads Road. I also do my own art and branched out into European products like glassware as well. “My partner Wayne has been incredible in helping me start off
“
as there is a lot of groundwork in the background, such as unloading my containers. “He has brought the sawmill at Bagnell Road and started Aotea Mac, and makes beautiful macrocarpa tables and is enjoying that. “We are loving the community spirit, the people are real, and I feel very connected. I haven’t felt that since I lived in the South Island years ago. I love the landscape here and that it is a very progressive town and a positive area to start a business like mine. There is great shop local support that is very encouraging for a small business like mine. “Seth and Jackson love the skatepark and the beach. Mangawhai is a special place for us to make memories. It was important for us to have somewhere special to call home, and I am absolutely loving it here. “I want to thank the locals for their support and look forward to a positive future. We hope everyone has a happy and safe year.” ¢
