p The Northpower Trust Board: Phil Heatley, Bill Rossiter, Sheena McKenzie, Erc Angelo, Irene Durham, Chris Biddles and Paul Yovich

The Northpower Electric Power Trust has announced an ownership review of Northpower Limited. The review is undertaken every five years. Consumers connected to Northpower’s electricity network in Kaipara and Whangārei areas can now make submissions on the ownership model of the company. “The trust will hold a series of public meetings across Kaipara and Whangārei throughout March to inform Northpower consumers of the review process,” says Northpower Electric Power Trust chair Erc Angelo. “The Northpower Electric Power Trust Deed requires that options for the future ownership of shares in Northpower be reviewed every five years. “The trustees of the Northpower Trust must carry out a consultation

Northpower Electric Power Trust, PO Box 1609 Whangārei 0140. Alternatively, people can call Brent Martin or Julie Noel at Plus Chartered Accountants on 09 438 3322 or email nept@plusca. co.nz to request an information pack. The Ownership Review document can be seen at northpower.com/about/ ownership. Submissions close at 4pm on April 28. People wanting to speak to their submission can do so at a public hearing at 11am on Thursday, May 26 at McKay Stadium, Sport Northland, 97 Western Hills Drive, Whangārei. A meeting of Northpower Electric Power Trust trustees and Northpower directors will be held on Thursday, June 9 at Plus CA Pavilion at 11am, where a decision on the ownership review will be made.

The last ownership review resulted in no change to the ownership structure process with Northpower consumers to determine if the current trust ownership structure is what consumers want, or if consumers would prefer a change.” Meetings for those with vaccination passes will be held as follows: Thursday, March 17, Dargaville Town Hall, 37 Hokianga Road at 11am, Monday, March 21, Mangawhai Domain Hall, 75 Moir Street, Mangawhai at 11am, and at Plus CA Pavilion, Cobham Oval, Okara Drive, Whangārei on Thursday, March 24 at 11am. A Zoom meeting will be held on Friday, March 25 at 11am for those who can’t attend the meetings or do not have vaccination passes. To request a Zoom link email nept@plusca.co.nz. Submissions can be made by emailing nept@plusca.co.nz, or by collecting a submission form and ownership review document from Plus Chartered Accountants at 134 Bank Street, Whangārei and returning it to this address. Submissions can also be posted in writing, no later than 4pm, April 28 2022, to: Submission to the Trustees,

This meeting is open to the public for observation only — vaccination passes are required for entry. Currently, the seven trustees Erc Angelo (chair), Sheena McKenzie (deputy chair), Chris Biddles, Irene Durham, Phil Heatley, Bill Rossiter and Paul Yovich, hold all of the shares in Northpower on behalf of the Trust’s beneficiaries — electricity consumers connected to the Northpower electricity network. In 1992, the government passed legislation that required Northpower to become a company. When the company was incorporated in 1993, the trust was formed to hold all the shares in Northpower on behalf of electricity consumers connected to the Northpower electricity network in Kaipara and Whangārei. It resulted in the ownership of the company remaining in the community. The trustees responsibilities are set out in the Trust Deed. The last ownership review in 2017 resulted in no change to the ownership structure with the ownership of the company remaining with the trust. ¢

College leaders announced

March 4 2022

u by Ann van Engelen

After a long wait, students and staff at Rodney College celebrated the selection of student leaders for 2022 last week. “Covid hindered a number of events for Rodney College in 2021 — including selecting our leaders for 2022,” says student leadership coordinator and head of department English Georgina Hackett. “Instead of deciding and having these positions announced at senior prize-giving last year, this group had to wait over five months from when they first submitted their application to be awarded their roles. “Before their positions were announced, their first unofficial engagement as leaders was coming in

Head Leaders are Monty Vemoa and Mikaila Isla. “Xavier Edmonds Cooper and Aidan Whittle were named Sports Leaders, and Samantha Hunia and Pania Ratu are the new Cultural Leaders. “Whānau Support Leaders are Nevada Pilkington-Sharp and Jaide Collinson, while Harris Norhan and Natalie Pearson became the Social Action Leaders. “Hanover House Leaders are Brendon Mason and Jamie Morrow. Miles House Leaders are Cayene Odi and Zeph Jones.

This is the first day of school for all of year nine and any new students

during their holiday to plan the year nine orientation day. “This is the first day of school for all of year nine and any new students to the college. Our year 13 students join them and help run the activities that the student leaders have planned. “It was such a fun day with the students getting to know each other, participating in team-building activities, and cooling off in the afternoon with a swim in the school pool. “It was amazing to see our new leaders step up to this challenge so easily and expertly. They worked together seamlessly and made sure that our new students felt welcome, comfortable and confident starting at Rodney College.”

“Charlie Balle and Sean Brennan are the Tyburnia House Leaders, and Izzy Treadwell and Eve Hampson were named Wattenbach House Leaders. “After only being announced last Wednesday, February 23, our Sports Leaders and House Leaders were thrust into the thick of things by needing to run the swimming sports on the Friday. “They did an amazing job MCing the event, making sure things ran smoothly, and overall creating a positive, albeit competitive, vibe. “The students looked amazing dressed in their house colours and had a fantastic afternoon competing in fun events such as the bottle bomb, tyre pull, house chain and relays.

p The Rodney College Student Leaders were announced last week after a long wait

“The student leaders will be kept very busy this term with lots of events on the calendar, such as Athletics Day in week six and the inter-whānau tube-a-side competition in week seven, where the winning whānau then have to take on the teachers, who are the reigning champions. “We also have a year nine Meet the Teacher evening for parents, and the leaders attend this, so they can answer any questions and manage the sausage sizzle. “All in all, it has been a fantastic start to the year for the leadership team, and we are looking forward to seeing what they will achieve in the rest of the year.” ¢

Ukulele fosters friendships u by Ann van Engelen

Creating a ukulele group at Lifepoint Church in One Tree Point was something Lisa Kenny started to bring people together. “A church in Whangarei had a ukulele group, and I thought it would be great if we had one too,” said Lisa. “We have been going about a year now and have had all sorts of people come along and join in. “The group is at the point now that playing the ukulele is a lot of fun, and we love it. We have also realised the group has become a group of companionship for people.” People with head injuries, epilepsy and mild strokes have been able to attend the weekly group. “Ukulele is an instrument that is good for hand-eye coordination and brain

function as you learn new songs and work out the chords. “We have people with a great range of skill levels, yet there are people who have never played before. We have named ourselves The Professionals, and our motto is if in doubt play C. “C is the first chord you learn to play as it is just one finger, so you can play C and not sound too bad with the others. “We have had a few people come along who are quite proficient with playing. “I was inspired to practise music when I joined the music team at church. If I wanted to get the song right for Sunday, I had to practise and practise.

“I like teaching people and enjoy that it is bigger than just ukulele. It is what I have learned over the past five to six years. “I enjoy seeing people get enjoyment from the group. It is a positive soul filler for them. “If someone comes along and they need someone to talk to, it is that as well, and we all enjoy singing. “Some people sit at the back of the stage on a Sunday during church and play to build their confidence. “At present, we have a lot of people over 60 attending, but we welcome people of all ages.

“We make sure ukulele is easy to learn for newcomers by playing songs with two chords in them. Often it is about stepping out and trying something and then walking in confidence with it. “The only thing I can tell people about strumming is practise, practise, practise, and it will come. “If people can get their own ukulele, that would be ideal, and we can guide them to where to get an instrument. “I love seeing people get enjoyment and making new friends, and it helps people to know that it is on every Wednesday at 12.30pm at LIfepoint Church, 300 One Tree Point Road.” ¢

March 4 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Defying winter bland u by Liz Clark

With more than 857 species of flowering plants in its genus, ericas bring a welcoming canvas of colour during winter and early spring. Erica comes from the Latin word meaning heath or broom. Approximately 650 species are endemic to South Africa, with the remainder native to other parts of Africa, Madagascar, the Mediterranean and Europe. To grow successfully, the plants require an acidic soil medium. A high alkaline environment will result in poor growth, root formation and eventually death. Alkaline soil can be amended with compost, other organic matter and fertiliser for acid-loving plants such as citrus. Drainage is always an important consideration — using raised planting areas will resolve that problem. Erica species are grown as landscape or garden plants for their spectacular

floral effect. They complement conifers planted as massed ground cover beneath. The shrubs can sometimes flower throughout the year. They can also be grown in tubs or window boxes, providing interest through autumn, winter and spring. The blooms are bell-shaped, with colours ranging in various shades of white, pink, lavender, orange and red. In areas prone to frosts, it’s advisable to use European species, especially in regions south of Auckland. After

flowering, light pruning should be done to encourage further blooms and a vigorous growth habit. Prolonged flowering can be achieved by hard pruning in early spring. With so many erica species available from garden centres, here are a few to consider taking a closer look at. Erica melanthera is a low-growing compact shrub ideal for borders, rockeries, containers and attracting beneficial insects. They also are perfect for cut flowers. It flowers from April until July.

Ruby Shepherd is the most popular cultivar with its prolific long-lasting small rose-pink blooms. For a larger-growing species, consider Erica mammosa Deep Pink as an option. This variety grows to a height of 1.8 metres. The plant is a long-lived, slow-growing shrub ideal for planting with proteas with its vibrantly coloured deep-pink tubular flowers. Always check the labels of plants, so the right one is selected for your site. Other cultivar choices to include are Isabel, Kramer’s Red, Myretoun Ruby, Spangles, Springwood White, Whitehall and Cherry Stevens. Look online for further options, or drop in at your local nursery for advice. ¢

Northland skateboarder Sam Johns was at Ruakākā and Waipū skateparks last weekend, encouraging skaters as part of his Northland tour. “Sam is a long-term skateboarder and lives and breathes the sport,” says Cheapskates Whangārei store manager Ricki Prime. “I have been in the industry for 15 years and have seen Sam on the scene the whole time. He ran regional competitions last November, and we were going to organise more competitions, but it is difficult at present. “He decided to tour and highlight the different skateparks that people may not know about.

We enjoy showing our people the parks that have exceptional skaters. “Skaters are humble people who go out and have fun, but we encourage park users to learn park etiquette. “Understanding park etiquette is important for age groups, including the very young. Just like surfers have etiquette on the ocean, skaters have

Skaters are humble people who go out and have fun “The interest in skateboarding has grown a lot in recent times, and I think it will peak soon like in the 80s. “Being local to the area, Sam loves meeting the new riders and working with the next generation to help them develop their skills. “Sam’s presence at the parks is less about competing and more about getting people joining in. “We have run competitions for a few years, and it is nice to watch people compete, but it is more fun when everyone can have a go. If you jump on the park and you are not in line or called that you are next, people don’t know that it is your turn. “We encourage parents to get involved with their children at skateparks, don’t just drop them off, help them to learn so they can be accountable. “A skatepark is like a work tool for skaters. At times, older skaters teach younger skaters and show them new skills. It is a community that works together. “Skateboarding is better than being on a screen all day. It teaches you to

be a part of something and how to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. “You have a connection with your board by yourself or with friends. For a young person, it is usually used as their first mode of transport. Learning tricks gives everyone energy as they have to work on it for a long time, and when they do their kickflip or other trick, they feel great. If people skate together, their tricks are similar, and

when they join other groups, they learn new things. “When I was young, I didn’t want to play rugby, but I loved skateboarding. I remember getting my first board and going to the park and thinking, I can do that, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought, so I spent hours practising.” Check out the Cheapskates Facebook or Instagram pages for Sam’s tours to Mangawhai, Dargaville and Ngunguru, Hikurangi, Maungaturoto and Kerikeri. ¢

Emotion of abstract u by Ann van Engelen

Kevin Willcocks has been painting since he was attending primary school and continues his passion from Barrier View Gallery in Mangawhai. “I had a mate in school whose mother was an artist, and she was teaching him how to do oil paintings,” says Kevin. “I gained an interest, and then my uncle bought me a set of watercolour paints. He sat me down and showed me how to use them, and my enjoyment in art took off from there.

“I have always done representational paintings of the coastal and seascape and have also completed many maritime paintings, as I was in the boat building industry for 23 years. “I work in oil, watercolour and acrylic these days, but I am mainly producing acrylic abstracts because I enjoy the effect I can get.

“I enjoy using a variety of textural things on my canvas and playing with colour. A lot of the earthy paintings have a minimal colour palette of two to three colours, or I often use black and white. “Maureen is crafty, and she has a lot of input into my work. I often call on her for advice when I get stuck for ideas. She is my best critic, and if I am having

I love to experiment with form, technique and medium, leading me down a path of exciting creativity “Later, I moved to oil painting and would paint after school for friends and family. I then started selling my work and doing commissions.” A boat builder and licensed builder by trade, Kevin grew up in the Mairangi Bay area and moved to Mangawhai in February 2016 with his wife, Maureen. “We both took a couple of years off work and lived in a caravan while we built our house.

“I still do traditional commissions when requested. There is a demand for large abstracts at present, especially in Mangawhai with a lot of new builds happening. “I love the freedom you have creating abstract work because it isn’t restrictive. I go into my studio and turn the music up loud. I can do what I like and throw the paint around the canvas and push it in all directions.

trouble, she will come to the gallery, and we discuss many options for what may happen next. “I add nature such as dolphins, birds or animals into 30–40 per cent of my abstract work and morph the abstract around it. That is how I progressed from doing a scene in my traditional style to abstract, and it worked well. “I will do more traditional scenes now if someone requests a commission, but

p Kevin and his wife Maureen often walk the beaches where he gets inspiration from nature for his art

p With an array of colours, Kevin adds a touch of nature such as sea life and birds into many of his abstract paintings

Nature gives me a lot of ideas with the things you see on the forest floor such as leaves, the life you get in rock pools and the different textures you get on the sand generally nowadays, I am focussing purely on abstract. I also surf and fish and go out on my kayak. I get a lot of inspiration while I am out on the water. “I used to do a lot of rock fishing when I was younger and love walking the beach, estuaries and walkways, too. “Nature gives me a lot of ideas with the things you see on the forest floor such as leaves, the life you get in rock pools and the different textures you get on the sand. “At present, I am working with a lot of earthy tones and am trying to reduce the amount of colour while relying on texture and technique. “I tell people if they are interested in art to follow their gut and feelings. If you feel like doing abstract work, it is simple, start putting paint on canvas and drift off into your own little world and play with the paint on the canvas and see what happens.

“If you want to paint representational scenes, it is always good to get your own photos and go from there. There is no harm if you want to change colours or the layout of things. You can change whatever you like and move things around, add things in and alter the colours — it is called artist’s licence. “Sales have been going well lately. I had a knee operation and wasn’t able to work for a couple of months, so during my recovery, I completed a lot of paintings. Even if I open the gallery for one day, I quite often sell something. “I have many memorable paintings I have done over the years. There are some fabulous paintings, including one large maritime piece done in watercolours. “There are so many pieces I have loved. You have to try not to get too attached to your work as you know they have to be sold, and you have to let them go. “Maureen and I love living in Mangawhai. It has its own little

microclimate. It is a great place for so many reasons, even though it is growing with the new builds and Mangawhai Central happening. “I have been coming here for years with my family. My grandfather had a bach here in the 1950s. We love everything about it, the beaches, the estuary, the bush in the background and the lack of traffic compared to Auckland. “From painting my first oil painting at the age of 10 and having exhibited and sold my works through a number of galleries, I am still fascinated with the New Zealand coastline and landscape. “It is ever-changing colours, and the moods continue to inspire me and provide motivation. With the ability to express myself freely, I love to experiment with form, technique and medium, leading me down a path of exciting creativity, notably with my recent delve into abstract works. “As I said, I work in oils, acrylics and watercolours with an increasing range

of structural, composite and organic materials, exploring the relationships between various colour harmonies and surface textures. “These provide a vast range of possibilities through material choice. My art presents balance and visual calm through to tumultuous painterly form. “The play of light gives the viewer the opportunity to engage visually, creating a sense of interest and pleasure. “My painting, titled Herons, was selected for the 2022 New Zealand Art Calendar, which I am very pleased with. People can see the world through my eyes on my website — kwart.co.nz. “To me, art is not just a passion but more of an obsession that spans over 50 years of my life. “I absolutely love being creative in all the various aspects of my art. Painting is a deep-seated part of me. No matter what I am doing and where I go, my art is always with me.” ¢

OPINION Dargaville Museum treasures What lies ahead Dargaville Museum Sunday volunteer Dooley Smith stepped back in time when he retired and decided to offer time at the museum to be reunited with a reminder of his teenage years.

“Our family moved to Dargaville in 1942 and I attended Dargaville Primary School and High School. There was no such thing as weekly pocket money back then and we found jobs after school. “At age 13 or 14, I was employed by the Wairoa Stores to deliver orders on their bike around Dargaville. “Imagine my surprise when, after retiring and volunteering at the museum, to be reunited with the very same bike in the Pioneer Hall. It hasn’t got the original basket, and I’m p Dooley Smith with the Wairoa Stores bike in the sure I’m not guilty of bending Dargaville Museum Pioneer Hall the handlebars.” The Wairoa Stores, more recently which is still in working order and has Allied Farmers Building, now ITM in an interesting story. What lies ahead, isn’t that the million dollar question? I hope that what lies ahead is no more need for masks. That is a personal opinion; I hate them with a fiery passion. Now there is an issue with which masks we can use. The cloth ones are no longer fit for purpose, so we have to wear what the government is recommending. They are more expensive and look horrid. If I have to wear a blasted mask, I would prefer to be comfortable in what I am wearing. I would suggest instead of focussing on what type of masks are being used, look at how they are being worn. Wearing a mask below your nose is about as useful as a condom with a hole in it. Increased inflation? Oh yippee skippy, the cost of living is on the rise! Groceries, fuel and everything that we all need go up in price, and what does some rocket scientist think would be a good idea? An increase to the minimum wage, allegedly to help with this. How does this self-proclaimed ‘genius’ think that this will help? Yes, it will put more money on your wage slip, but how does the business you work for cover this increase? By increasing the prices of the goods they sell. The only one that

benefits from a minimum wage increase is the government because they get more taxes from you and more GST from businesses, with increased prices at the till. I wish this was something that lay ahead. The removal of GST from all fruit, veggies, meat, eggs, bread, and dairy products, Kiwi made produce, hygiene products like sanitary items and oral health products and fuel. Increase GST on all cigarettes, alcohol and sugary soft drinks, as well as luxury items, especially imported ones. Do this, and you will get a lot more food in your trolley, and your wages will go further. Look at how the income tax rates work. Will that change ever lie ahead? New Zealand operates on a marginal tax system, so once you pass a certain income bracket, you then pay more on the next amount you earn. For instance, if you are earning $48,000 with a tax rate of 17.5% per annum and your earnings increase to $52,000 per annum, you will pay a different rate on the extra $4,000. It will be taxed at 30%, an increase of 12.5% on the 17.5% you are paying on the $48,000. A middle-income earner working a 40-hour week, on $23–$33 an hour, is taxed at 30%. Once you pass that $33 an hour, you are then on a 33% tax rate. The next increase is at $180,000-plus, which is $86.54 an hour, and that is taxed at 39%. So for a difference of $110,000 per annum the higher incomes are only paying 9% more taxes than a middleincome earner. That is a very simplistic take on our tax system, as I’m not an accountant. Still, I certainly think there are things to improve our system and make it fairer for the lower to middle-income earners. Let us take home more money, then there will be more money circulating, homelessness and child poverty won’t go away, but maybe this will help some. I wish this was what lay ahead. ¢
