Paul McRae, aka George, discovered the craft of woodcarving when he was going through a time of depression in life. He says it is thanks to the team at the Te Hana gallery for the input they had in his life at the time that he managed to find a new lease on life. After taking up the challenge to establish the OWL Community Arts Hub last year, Paul now enjoys meeting locals and visitors to the town as he manages the facility and ensures local artists get the opportunity to have their artwork on display. continued on page 12 …

“I was at a fete early this year, and one of the busiest sites was the bouncy castle area,” says qualified firefighter and pump operator Jason Tanner. “I have a couple of children myself and thought it would be a cool thing for us to do as a brigade. Anything with children and bouncy castles is fun. “I approached our brigade members and then found an awesome fire truck bouncy castle. As we are a volunteer station, we rely on the community and organisations such as Lions Club, so this helps us create extra revenue.

It is really cool, and it gives people an opportunity to speak to us. “For more than 20 years, we have held meat raffles at the Ruakākā and Uretiti campgrounds during summer and end with a water fight with the children. We will continue to do that. “Our year has been very busy, and we are looking at a record year for call-outs. We are preparing for a busy summer with scrub fires and hot weather. “The brigade is a tight-knit community, and it has been a testing year with the different things happening. We rally

I have been a fireman for five years now and love it “In week four, it is already well-booked in advance for a $180 donation to the station.” The brigade members deliver, set up and then pack down the castle, which is loaned for four hours. “For logistics we service the Ruakākā, One Tree Point and Waipū area to keep the castle local. We are all volunteers and don’t get paid. As we are on-call for emergencies, parents, caregivers and organisers are responsible for the castle once we set it up. “Anyone can book it through our RVFB Bouncy Castle Facebook page. We love seeing the children have fun on a fire truck that they can jump all over.

around each other when things are tough and get on with it. “We are always encouraging new members to join us, especially those who can help during the day as we all work and are often outside the local area. “I have been a fireman for five years now and love it. It is a big call for a family having a family member drop whatever we are doing to respond to a call-out, but the brigade is our second home. “We are here to help everyone. At times, we know the people, and we stand back and allow others to tend them if need be. Anyone interested in joining can get in touch on our Ruakākā Fire Station Facebook page.” ¢

Mangawhai Helping Hands is presenting A Christmas Trail for children this December. “Mangawhai Helping Hands charity is a Facebook group with more than 3,200 members,” says organiser Libby Clews. “We cover Warkworth, Wellsford, Mangawhai, Te Ārai, Te Hana, Waipū, Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto. Our core function is to support people who need help to get by in life. “We do things like gift food parcels and meals, run the Mangawhai free library book train and fix washing machines, clothing, chests of drawers and laptops that are given to people in need. “If there are projects that need doing, we help do them if possible. In the past, we have hosted a large community Christmas party. However, because of Covid, we have had to adjust, and this year, we have created A Christmas Trail for families.” The Christmas Trails will be held in Wellsford, Mangawhai, and hopefully, Maungaturoto. “We have created a map for families to follow. They complete small tasks at each location on their way to the box of treasure. Halfway through, they can stop for a free ice cream before carrying on to the final destination where a named gift awaits each child in the treasure chest. “The 12-step trail will be set up for weather conditions, and we hope to have

a socially-distanced Santa photo area, which will be fun. “It has been a really tough year for everyone, including children. We are excited to be able to provide an activity to help people get out of the house and support parents and caregivers that are struggling. “We have local businesses donating money for the gifts to help children that may not necessarily get a gift at Christmas. We hope the event is light relief for the parents and caregivers too. “As admins of the Facebook page, we have all had children home, and we have had struggles as well, so we understand what the community has been going through. We believe all families need a bit of fun, no matter who you are, especially at Christmas. “We would love more of the Wellsford community to join our Mangawhai’s Helping Hands Facebook group. We are here to help people in all the little towns from Mangawhai to Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka, and Wellsford and through to Warkworth.” To assist with monetary sponsorship to purchase small gifts for each child and ice cream vouchers, or to register for the Christmas Trail go to the Mangawhai’s Helping Hands Facebook page. ¢

Electric vehicle charger installed A new fast electric vehicle charger has been installed at Waipū and is the latest addition to Northland’s network. The charger plugs a gap in a key location for motorists travelling both north and south. Supporters and EV users have welcomed the new station, especially given the high ownership of EVs in the wider area. The $68,000 project was jointly funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority and EV charging network Charge.net, and is supported by the Northland Regional and Whangārei District Councils and Northpower. “The NRC is keen to support improvements to the region’s electric vehicle charging stations as a practical part of its commitment to climate action,” says chair of the regional council’s Climate Change Working Party, Councillor Amy Macdonald. “Council envisages a region that’s resilient in a changing climate and transitions proactively and equitably to a thriving net-zero emissions society before 2050. Encouraging the use of electric vehicles is one of the ways we can help achieve this.” The Whangārei District Council provided two parking spaces, the Licence to Occupy, painted the parking spots and signage, while Northpower worked closely with NRC to find an innovative engineering solution to help deliver this project on budget. p Sam says he enjoys the views and the atmosphere of the Mangawhai Tavern when he sings at his allocated Sunday Sessions

Summer with Sam

p Sam Taylor has been performing for many years in Mangawhai and is looking forward to entertaining again this summer

u by Ann van Engelen

Well-known Pahi resident Sam Taylor will be singing at some Sunday Sessions at the Mangawhai Tavern this summer. “Sam has been a part of our Sundays at the tavern for more than three years. He fits in with the vibe we like on a Sunday,” says tavern manager Conagh Sullivan. “We host various singers and groups at different times. The sessions are designed to be nice background music that fits with the views we have here. “Sam is a really nice guy and a bit of a favourite with our customers. He sits in the corner with his guitar, his sound system and his soft voice. “The company, music, views, drinks and sun all fit together. We will also feature some new talent as well.” Originating from Horeke in Hokianga, Sam covers music styles such as The

Beatles, Elvis, Crowded House, The Eagles and Steely Dan. “When I was young, I joined the navy and travelled around the country,” says Sam. “I lived and farmed in Taranaki after the navy and was always interested in singing and playing guitar. The timing wasn’t right to join a band, as milking cut into training time, so I decided to go solo. “I settled in Pahi on the Kaipara in 2011. I fell in love with the area many years ago as I have attended the Pahi Regatta for some 25 years. “I joined bands as a ring in, but I generally sing alone. I have many styles and cover many tastes, and I am happy

with what I have achieved in my life. I enjoy country, swing pop, 70s and 80s rock and modern rock such as AC/DC. “My influence also includes The Rolling Stones and singers like Kenny Rogers and Willy Nelson. “I enjoy the atmosphere of the Mangawhai Tavern as it is in your face and raw. Even if just one person stops and takes notice of my music, I try to engage with them and make it a personal experience. “My good fortune is to be able to play what I sing, whether the songs are close

to the original or the version of the song that inspires me. Taking requests and making people happy. That is what I like the most about my singing, along with the comaraderie of musicians you meet along the way as well. “I am looking forward to a great summer and spending time with my Mangawhai Tavern family when my Sundays to entertain come around. I also hope to have events at the various RSAs across Kaipara in the near future and bring smiles to peoples faces.” ¢

November 19 2021 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Planting by the sea u by Liz Clark

Living on the coast has challenges for anyone planning to garden on sandy soil. Combined with salt-laden air, choosing plants to handle harsh conditions can be difficult for first-timers. There’s also the wind to factor in and the lack of moisture-holding capacity that comes with sandy soil. Plants miss out when water channels through the large spaces between the sand particles out of reach of the roots. Before rushing off to the nursery to buy all those plants on the wish list, put compost at the top of that list. Compost, combined with other organic matter, has excellent moisture retention and will save a lot of disappointment long-term if it’s used to establish plants. Add in other materials such as seaweed, old hay, sheep pellets, well-aged stable manure, newspaper and paper shopping bags. It’s best to use a layering method starting with manure, then newspaper, compost mix and mulch on the top. Since sand has excellent drainage properties, any issues with poor drainage are eliminated. The garden beds should be topped up each autumn with additional layers. Alternatively, the compost and organic material can be dug into the sand and forked in. The other factor to consider is the strong winds that blow in from the open ocean, if it’s an exposed coastal site. Further inland will be less exposed; however, establishing shelter

trees or shrubs should be priority. Consider coastal natives such as pohutukawa, flax, cabbage trees, kowhai, corokia, coprosma, toitoi and pseudopanax. All of these should be planted in autumn with some temporary screening such as windbreak cloth for protection. Planting in autumn will give the plants time during the winter to get their roots established. The positive is, many of these species are now available in a multitude of colours — so green isn’t the only colour. Mass planting bronze flax, for example, can create a spectacular effect. These can grow up to a height of 1.8m and span to a maximum width of 1.4m. Exotics, too, can also withstand difficult coastal conditions. However, in Northland, many of the varieties usually used such as buddleia, bottlebrush and others, are now considered a threat to native plant species in the region. To check for alternatives, Northland Regional Council has a useful online information pack, Plant Me Instead!, to guide decisions for plant selection. p Artefacts from the sailing ship Daring make up the core of a new exhibition, while festive events raise funds and support the local creative community

Museum’s festive spirits u by Andy Bryenton

A seasonal market and pop-up Christmas shop featuring only locally handmade items are the curtain-raiser to a special December exhibition at the Mangawhai Museum. While the museum’s annual gala dinner and fundraiser has been cancelled due to Covid restrictions, it’s still a full social calendar for the home of Mangawhai history. As the volunteer elves put the finishing touches to market day and locally-sourced gift ideas, work is underway to reveal the long-buried treasures of the sailing ship Daring. “Our volunteers have been very busy ahead of the Christmas shop opening on November 13,” says museum manager Emma McDermott. “Everything is locally made, which means that picking up a gift here is a

great way to support local. Our Christmas cakes are famous and often sell out, and we also have decorations, cushions, bags and many more gift ideas.” In addition, the museum’s December 5 Christmas market day is shaping up to be its biggest ever, with more stalls, more entertainment and visits from the Christmas Fairy and Saint Nick himself. “It’s very much a tradition, as new volunteers and helpers come on board with fresh ideas all the time. This will be our sixth year, and as we are a non-profit, we appreciate the help in fundraising,” says Emma.

“We have had some great community support from people like Stylish Homes, our major sponsor this year.” The festive season culminates with the opening of a special exhibition for Mangawhai. This year the sailing ship Daring returned home after more than a century buried under the sands of Auckland’s west coast. Now, a selection of artefacts, preserved along with the wreck, has been made ready for public display. They provide a candid portrait of the life of a sailor and coastal trader in colonial times and will form the

nucleus of an exhibition opening on December 10. The final plan is for the entire, wellpreserved ship to be displayed in its own environmentally controlled space, along with the artefacts found within. While this requires a specialist build to come to fruition, the exhibition opening this December gives an indication of the scope of the project. For Emma and the museum team, a festive season with a successful market day and pop-up craft shop brings this vision another step closer to reality. ¢

The lucky reader who takes home this seasonal windfall will be published in the December 10 edition of The Weekend Lifestyler. However, there will be plenty of other winners, too. Vietnamese Salad

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER November 19 2021

11

u by Jessica Keesing

Now, I’m not sure if you can truly call this a Vietnamese salad or not, but it’s definitely inspired by Vietnamese food. I’m a massive lover of the flavour sensations that Vietnamese food has, so I’ve tried my hand at making something. It is a pretty simple dish, just requires a wee bit of cutting. If you aren’t pro cabbage, using a crispy lettuce like a Cos works wonderfully as well. What I do recommend is texture, texture, texture don’t skimp on the lovely crunchy things that go into this dish or the dressing. The dressing is equal portions of each item, however, for this, I’ve just made it a certain measurement. INGREDIENTS ¼ red cabbage finely chopped 1 bag mung bean sprouts ½ cucumber thinly sliced ½ red onion thinly sliced 1 packet of vermicelli noodles (recommend the Waiwai noodles) 500g chicken thighs 1 cup cashews ½ cup fresh coriander, mint and basil leaves finely chopped (I tend to use a fair bit more) 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tbsp maple syrup Dressing ¹⁄³ cup fish sauce ¹⁄³ cup olive oil ¹⁄³ cup lemon juice 1 tbsp maple syrup 1 finely chopped chilli

METHOD In a frying pan, heat a touch of oil, and either add diced or whole chicken breasts to the pan, then add in fish sauce and maple syrup and fry until meat is cooked, with a touch of crispness. Finely slice cabbage, onion and cucumber and set aside. Combine all dressing ingredients into a jar and set aside until ready to serve. While the chicken is cooking, I like to pick all the herb leaves. I don’t cut them until I’m ready to serve so as not to leave them bruised. When the chicken is almost done, pour boiling water over noodles and let soak until soft, drain and set aside to start assembling.

p As the manager of the OWL Art Space, George has pieces such as his manaia representing guardianship on display for people to appreciate

Carvings by George u by Ann van Engelen

Paul McRae has spent 10 years honing his skills as a woodcarver using the name George while creating significant pieces of art. “George was my great-grandfather, and the first carving I did was from a post he had put in the ground,” says Paul. “I was born and bred in Wellsford, and did my big OE, but came home because I like our town. I use the name George as it is easier for me to talk about George than it is to talk about myself. “He is a very big link to me and still has a connection. He was an interesting

and they would show me how to carve. I took up his offer and never looked back. I used to take a few pieces in and muck around as I was intimidated by the quality of workmanship I saw there. “One day, Kerry directed me to some old kauri slabs with a chainsaw and piece of chalk. He showed me how to draw some Māori hooks and chop them

from private sources and went on my own adventure. “At the end of last year, I was asked by the Wellsford Committee to help set up the OWL Community Arts Hub. OWL is an acronym for Old Wellsford Library. “I didn’t have enough of my own work to fill the space, so I asked local artists to join me, and hey presto, we now have more than one.

When people come into our gallery for the first time, they let out an involuntary wow old character in his time, and I always liked that expression: ‘By George, that’s good’. “A few years ago, I had a life crisis and went through a really bad depression and couldn’t face working. One day, I walked into Kerry Strongman’s gallery in Te Hana and started talking with the guys. “Kerry recognised I was at a bit of a loss and offered me to hang with them,

up. To my surprise, my first sold before it was finished. “The guys were an amazing team to learn from. The camaraderie made it a dream job, and we met people, not just from New Zealand, but all over the world, who were fascinated by what we were doing. “Kerry and I loved each other like brothers, but we fought like brothers too. I began buying pieces of kauri

“Although Kerry died a few years ago, the team are still all connected and have pieces here in the OWL. When people come in, they recognise the style of work from our days at Te Hana. “I still have his picture in my workshop just to remind me where it all began. I often glance at his photo while I am working and ask him what he thinks. He still smiles back, so I think he approves of my work.

p Once the plan is made and the design is cut out of the wood, George spends many hours completing each project

p George worked on his Guardians of Perspective pieces using the Haast’s eagle head and the hook to portray seeing things from a higher perspective and abundance

Some pieces of wood will tell you straight away what they want to be, other bits are like looking at blank paper, and you scratch your head at what to do “Before lockdown, people passing through were saying they never expected to see this in Wellsford. We have some very talented people in our community, and I am really proud of what we have put together. “When people come into our gallery for the first time, they let out an involuntary wow. I know we got something right and are succeeding in our mission to put art back into the heart of our community. “Ten per cent of our overall sales goes back into a community fund — so it is a win-win. “The whole creative process is my free therapy session. Once I have my headphones on, the grinder in my hands and a slab on the table, nothing else exists in my mind, and it all starts flowing. “The magic happens, and the wood rewards you with amazing grain patterns that make it look like you planned it that way all along. Of course, there is the other end of the scale, where you suddenly realise you overcooked one and now have an expensive pile of sawdust.”

George’s latest editions are his hook and eagle carvings. “I call them The Guardians of Perspective and have used the Haast’s eagle head because it was the world’s largest eagle, and it was right here in New Zealand. It represents seeing things from a higher perspective. “The hook is about abundance, and the whole piece comes from the saying: ‘Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, show a man how to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime’. “I made them both in lockdown because that is what happens when you lock up artists. They are cut from the same slab of a 45,000-year-old kauri, and they are very impressive, standing seven feet tall. “My manaia has the head of a bird, body of a man and tail of a fish. It is kaitiaki, the guardian over the air, land and water. “My designs basically drop out of the air. I study the grains of wood I am using to see what I can fit on to utilise

as much as I can. Sometimes, I have whimsical ideas and other times, I get more traditional. It all depends on what I am looking at at the time. “It has taken me 10 years to get to the stage I am at. Having the correct tools helps. Carving is one of those things that when you love what you do — you keep on doing it. “I come up with an idea and doodle on a notepad or take a photo and then redo it to how I want it to look. Some pieces of wood will tell you straight away what they want to be, other bits are like looking at blank paper, and you scratch your head at what to do. “None of my wood is perfect as I use a holistic approach. I design not to waste the timber, which isn’t always that easy. I draw the design and stand back and study it to check proportions and that it flows properly. “Sometimes they put up a fight, and other times you can create without looking. I like things to look alive and have movement and natural shapes.

Once it is cut out with the chainsaw and grinder, I sand it for hours and hours. “I love that carvings are tactile, and you can touch them. Completing my projects with oil is the reward. All the hard work starts coming to life before your eyes. Having people appreciate my work is all part of it. “Carving is my happy place. I go to my workshop, put my headphones on and jump into a bit of creativity. “Even people with no money who come in and fall in love with my pieces. It touches me when my work touches someone else. Money is nice, but it’s not everything. Having an appreciation of beauty is the best thing. “We really want the gallery to be successful and the OWL is trying to stay open seven days until after Christmas. People can check out our Facebook page for opening hours. We want people to not leave town until they have seen the OWL.” ¢

Rescue chopper move likely Northland’s Rescue Helicopters could move to Whangārei Airport with Northland Emergency Services Trust meeting with the Whangārei District Council last week seeking approval to lease land and buildings at the airport. NEST has been working with the WDC for approval to relocate its base to Whangārei Airport. The WDC voted to approve the proposal in principle. Both parties will enter into a memorandum of understanding to be finalised during the coming weeks. The service has been looking to relocate its base for many years, and under the proposed arrangement, the move to the airport could be completed by the end of 2022. All costs associated with the move will be covered by NEST. “In looking at alternative options, NEST has considered a range of factors, including Civil Aviation compliance and general proximity to Northland DHB’s Whangārei Hospital,” says Northland Emergency Services Trust chairman Paul Ahlers. “We have looked at a number of different sites that have had to be ruled out for one reason or another. The location that meets the highest attributes in this regard is the Whangārei Airport at Onerahi. “The airport would seem like the most natural fit for an

aviation-based activity such as ours. It allows us to meet full compliance with Civil Aviation regulations in almost all weather conditions, which is a priority for a rescue service.” The rescue chopper has been based at Kensington Park in Whangārei for the past 33 years. The service shares the ambulance station premises with the Order of St John and runs its aircraft and engineering operations from this central city location. “Demand for Northland’s rescue helicopters continues to grow, with the service now operating three Sikorsky S-76 helicopters and performing well over 1,200 flights per year. “The rescue chopper service has outgrown the Kensington facility and has been considering alternative base locations in and around Whangārei city for some time now. “The existing Kensington Park ground lease with Whangārei District Council will expire in mid-2023, and NEST is looking to have relocated its base before that date.” ¢
