Beyond the breaking surf Surfing is a sport which has enjoyed pop culture status and worldwide popularity since the early days of the 1950s, when longboards and rock ‘n’ roll culture defined a new era. Today, the call of the surf is different for different people; for some, a form of meditation, for others, a way to get closer to nature, and for many, a way to build self confidence and skill. Aotearoa Surf School has come full circle when it comes to teaching people how to surf; from the physics of the sport to its culture and history, and back to what makes it important — people themselves. continued on page 12…

Urgent flight saves life once again Whangarei man Lars Christensen could not be more thankful. In a year of change, in the midst of a global pandemic, Lars is thanking his lucky stars for the care provided by the paramedics and pilots of the Northland Rescue Helicopter who for him, were an important part in saving his life just weeks ago. In early September, Lars ended up in hospital feeling breathless and with a tight chest. Following extensive testing, it was deemed he had asthma as the enzyme that is released into the body when a heart attack occurs was barely present in his blood results. Sent home with the instruction to medicate and rest, Lars thought it would be ok. The following weekend the chest pains returned. “I went to get out of bed and nearly passed out – the chest pains returned and I took the inhaler, and then some panadol to help manage the pain. I went back to bed but couldn’t get back to sleep,” says Lars.

building in his chest and the pressure on his chest increasing until he knew something was definitely not right. “I was crook all day. I said to my partner that I think I needed to go to hospital so she ran me up and once we were there, things moved fast. “The young doctor who saw me told me that the enzyme in my system was reading at 560. The week before it was 16. I should not have been alive still,” Lars says. “Within a short space of time, they told me I needed to prepare to be flown to Auckland Hospital for surgery.” This is where the urgency became more emotional – with Auckland still in the grips of a COVID-19 cluster breakout and still in a form of lockdown, Lars told his partner and family to stay put in Whangarei for their own protection.

The following morning, September 7 and Father’s Day, Lars celebrated with his family while still feeling unwell – with the pain

“The hospital staff had made a few phone calls and within no time I was being prepared to be flown to Auckland. I told my partner and my son not to come down with me – she really wanted to fly with me but it just wasn’t worth the risk.”

p All fun and games — last year’s Silver Fern Farms Whanau Day packed in dozens of great activities; this year promises to be even bigger

Starting as a simple concept; a company family day to thank workers at Dargaville’s Silver Fern Farms facility, the celebratory event has been expanded to embrace the whole town. The leading local employers feel that they are part of the community and that the community supports them in many different ways. So this yearly fun day is appropriate to share with all. A group of familyfocussed organisations, known as the Tamariki Collective, have thrown their support behind the whanau day in recent years to add to the celebration, which Silver Fern Farms began. This collective includes family advocacy groups, social workers, iwi-based organisations and Sport Northland to name but a few; a collection of experienced event organisers among them. This year, it means a packed schedule of events at Selwyn Park, directly following the Dargaville

Christmas Parade on December 5. Just up the road and around the corner volunteers will be setting up bouncy castles, mega slides, outdoor games and of course a massive free barbecue courtesy of the hosts, Silver Fern Farms. The town’s swimming pool will be free to enjoy. There will be action on the skatepark and new pump track too, with a brand new bike being given away by local trail riding adventurers Deadwood. There will also be plenty of opportunities to get active or just chill, with relaxation space for parents and under-fives, entertainment and fun challenges from Circus Kumarani, sports stars from Rugby For Life, free fresh fruit and water for hydration. The entire fun day is free of charge for the whole family, carrying on the tradition of Silver Fern Farms giving back to the community, which supports their local operations, as employees and neighbours. ¢

By-election leads to new roles u by Paul Campbell

A by-election process begins on Tuesday, November 24, when nominations open for a seat on the Northland Regional Council left vacant by former regional councillor John Bain. His old responsibilities have been reassigned in the interim. Mr Bain resigned after the council voted for a Maori Ward to be included in future local body elections. The by-election process begins with a nomination period from Tuesday, November 24 until Tuesday, December 22. It is open to anyone enrolled as a parliamentary elector anywhere in New Zealand, is a New Zealand citizen and nominated by two electors of the NRC’s Whangarei Urban constituency. It could be March next year before the eventual winner is sworn in. Meanwhile, NRC member Rick Stolwerk has been appointed interim chair of the Northland Regional Transport Committee. It was held by Mr Bain who also had a number of other governance roles. Council chair Penny Smart says a number of interim appointments had been made to cover the former councillor’s various portfolios and positions. “John brought considerable experience to the council table; both

as a local body representative of many years, but also as someone with a long history of strong public service generally. I’d especially like to acknowledge Cr Stolwerk, who has now assumed one of the most critical vacant roles as well as joining the Audit and Risk Subcommittee.” NRC’s deputy chair Justin Blaikie will become chair of the Regional Economic Development Service Delivery working party. Mrs Smart will be chair of the Kaihu River Working Group, and Cr Jack Craw becomes a full member of the Investment and Property subcommittee. “It will ensure the collective skill sets of the new council in place after the by-election are utilised as sensibly and efficiently as possible,” Ms Smart said. By-election nomination forms and details for would-be candidates, will be available from NRC offices and at nrc.govt.nz/by-election. ¢

November 20 2020 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Indulging in retro u by Ann van Engelen

Janelle Reynish’s infatuation with dressing in the 50s retro style began four years ago and became a way to bring her Lady Sugarbelle character to life.

p Janelle Reynish discovered the art of dressing in the 50s outfits four years ago and hasn’t looked back

p The Reynish family is often found at classic car shows where Gordon captures photographs of Janelle by the various vehicles

“I really enjoy dressing up in character and travelling to various car shows or special events with my photographer husband Gordon and our daughters Sofia and Izabella,” says Janelle. “When Gordon and I got married we had a 50s theme. I had a tea-length dress and the birdcage veil. I arrived in a classic car, the boys had leather jackets and the girls had the swing dresses with the petticoats. It was so much fun. “I have pin-up friends in Auckland, and we get together for shows or organise girls weekends. Our outfits include petticoats, head flowers, belts, shoes and bangles. It is fun going back to the era when life was more chilled compared to nowadays. It takes a bit of distraction from the reality of life in 2020. “I now have it down to two hours to get ready. We have found the older generation love seeing our age group keeping the look alive. They stop us in the street and say how it brings back happy memories for them. A dressmaker makes Sofia and Izabella’s outfits to complement mine. I love that it is teaching my daughters to dress

like ladies. I find the era addictive and love the fashion as it brings on another personality allowing me to step out of mum mode and be a playful 50s girl.“ That is especially so at classic car shows. “Being at car shows brings out the alter ego, and I get my inspiration from the colour schemes. You find yourself surrounded by beautiful vehicles and it is so much fun. At first, I didn’t know how it would be taken. My mum thought I was a bit crazy, but now if I am in my mum’s clothes, she looks at me sideways. In the street, people now recognise me from the Christmas Parade or other shows. I encourage other girls to join in, especially plus-size girls. It gives you a huge confidence boost, especially once you have your hair and makeup done. You can be Marilyn Munroe for a day if you like. “We live in an awesome community, and I enjoy that I make people smile, and they appreciate my character. I love giving them something nice for the day — it makes it all worth it. The classic car owners appreciate it as well, as the costumes add character and atmosphere to the events. Getting photos beside the cars is a bonus.” ¢

Kaipara Refuse Ltd RECYCLE RIGHT

09 439 2146 | KAIPARAREFUSE@XTRA.CO.NZ Your glass bottles and jars are 100% recyclable, right here in New Zealand with zero reliance on overseas markets. A glass bottle can be recycled time and time again. All collected bottles travel from the Kaipara to Visy Glass in Auckland where the glass is processed and made into new bottles.

The team at the Dargaville Transfer Station (Left to Right) Kim (manager), Lee‑Ann (the recycling lady) and Albert.

Currently 73% of all glass to market is being captured for recycling in New Zealand. All of your glass food jars, wine, spirit and beer bottles are accepted for recycling. However, not all types of glass can be recycled and items such as drinking glasses, window glass, light bulbs or ornamental glass needs to be disposed of correctly in general waste.

Ben who comes twice a week and clears the site of loose rubbish.

These items if placed in the recycling can result in loads of otherwise quality glass being rejected and sent to landfill. Every tonne of glass bottles recycled prevents the use of virgin materials and reduces carbon emissions. Thank you for recycling your bottles and jars. The transfer station, at the end of Awakino Rd in Dargaville, has been run by Kaipara Refuse for over 10 years now. All waste taken to the site is transported to a landfill by Northland Waste. Kaipara Refuse has always looked at trying to minimize the amount of waste taken to landfill. Currently there are options to sort scrap metal, recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and green waste. In the future we are hoping to be able to have a viable option for timber waste.

Janine Abernethy ‑ Director Janine is an owner/operator of a scrap metal recycling facility and a construction and residual waste bin operation in Northland. This facility supports the recycling of metals from Kaipara Refuse. She also has a background in teaching and health administration with experience on industry boards and health boards.

Accompanied by music teacher Adam Blake, four Otamatea High School students attended the Aotearoa Music Awards last Sunday at the Spark Arena in Auckland. “For Benito Beyer, Rose Batten, Sarah Campbell-Winter and Jaden Sheppard, this meant not just meeting New Zealand’s biggest musicians, but leading journalists and media personalities as well,” says Mr Blake. “It was a fantastic night to not just watch the show live but we also helped set up for the event, and became backstage ushers where we met some of New Zealand’s most influential musicians and media industry professionals. “The night was a great opportunity to see live music and the cross-section of professions and skill sets required to put on a show of this scale. It was hugely inspiring for us all. It was thanks to Deborah Pead, as well as Jack and Adam from Pead PR that we were given the experience. “I am a first-year teacher, and the chance to take the students to the awards was totally unexpected. It was a huge, star-studded night for our students. Deborah, the founder of Pead PR and friend of principal Rachel Clothier Simmonds, offered her extensive network to the school in support of extra-curricular and career development opportunities. The students all study arts or media

and we became backstage ushers and met the likes of Devil Skin, Anika Moa, Hollie Smith, Six60, L.A.B, Larry Morris and Kate Rodger. “The students all came away with their own memories. Jaden said the night was an awesome experience to get amongst the different industries we were individually interested in. He believes it really was a once in a lifetime opportunity. For Benito, it was a chance to begin sharing his own music, which he produces under the name Neto 03, as well as gather inspiration from leading musicians in NZ.

was amazing. She was impressed that they are all such down to earth people. Overall it was an amazing night for her. “Sarah said, being able to help out backstage and experience what

goes on behind the scenes at events like the Aotearoa Music Awards was an amazing opportunity to have been given. For her, it opened her eyes to the industries that are involved. It was an opportunity I never saw coming as a first-year teacher. “The generosity in setting us up, not only with tickets to watch the show but with work experience, networking and meet and greets, is something I know myself and the students will be grateful for and remember for a long time.” ¢

Oh, the sweet scent u by Liz Clark

The scent of lavender and the sight of its display of flowers harken back to memories of English and French gardens across the ages. Lavender is one of the easiest shrubs to grow in your garden. From pots to tubs and inground plantings this lovely perennial can bring much-needed colour to an otherwise dull garden or courtyard. Its bright flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. It is especially beneficial for planting around a small vineyard or on the edges of the vegetable garden. These plants are easy-care, resilient to a range of conditions. They can withstand prolonged dry periods, which makes them ideal for the Kaipara region. The two main types available are English and French lavender. While they may seem the same, the two varieties have different flower forms as well as preferred uses. English lavender, while high in oil, with a stronger scent, is mainly used in culinary dishes. French lavender, with its butterfly-like blooms, is mostly used for the making of essential oils used in holistic therapy, potpourri and scent. Either variety is still perfect for any garden, large or small. Both varieties need good drainage and plenty of organic matter to be put into the planting area before putting the plants in. Lavender can be grown

in clay, however, ensure the bed being prepared is raised above ground level and add in manure and compost to ensure good growth. That, in turn, will also ensure the roots of the plant aren’t prone to the dreaded ‘wet feet’ scenario associated with some of the Kaipara’s mixed clay soils. Yearly pruning should be done lightly, avoid wherever possible pruning older branches, as these take far longer to recover than younger shoots. Lavender can be trained into hedges with gradual and careful shaping to create a spectacular impact during flowering. Even without the flowers, the foliage is also highly attractive. Plants should be placed approximately a metre apart and kept well watered while young. Avoid overwatering, or your lavender will die from rot. Plant in containers around your garden or courtyard to give an added visual appeal. Once established, lavenders require very little care and will withstand the long hot summer months without the need to provide too much water. Lavender varieties to look for are Lavance, Hidcote, Boysenberry Ruffles, With Love, Marshwood and Pukehou.

Finding soldiers in the digital age

7

u by Liz Clark

With advancements in digital information technology, creating access for researchers, finding out about a relative that served in the first world war has been made easier. When searching for family members, who may have served in France, Gallipoli and other locations between 1914–1918, the question is often asked: ‘Where do I start?’ The answer is to begin with your relative’s name. The first website to visit is the Auckland Museum’s Online Cenotaph database aucklandmuseum. com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph. Type in your relative’s name. The search engine will bring up either one name, if it’s an uncommon one, or several if it’s a more commonly-used one such as Smith. Once you find the correct name, click on the link for it and it will redirect you to the page that will have detailed information for the person you’re enquiring about. From there, note down your soldier’s service number and keep a record of it. The page may also contain a photo of your relative, embarkation dates, the name of the vessel they left on and the location they were being sent to. After you’ve got the details of your relative, visit Archives New Zealand’s record database Archway at archway. archives.govt.nz. In the search box type in your relative’s serial number and click the search bar. The site will then redirect you to the name of your relative with a link below for the digitised service record. You may also find your relative’s digitised probate records. These can

p New Zealand soldiers on Armistice Day celebrating with Londoners marking the end of the first world war

provide further information regarding family members’ names, property and other information. The page will then redirect to a second page with the link for the digitised copies of your soldier’s service record. Click on to the link, which will then open up another page where you can download the records either as separate files or in PDF format. It should be noted that not all files will be complete or your relative may not have served overseas but remained in New Zealand instead.

Other factors to consider. If there is no record of them having served in the NZEF or other military sectors for New Zealand, then they may have joined the British Forces or even the Australian ones. To find out how to find information on a relative who served in the British

Forces, visit nationalarchives.gov. uk/help-with-your-research/researchguides/british-army-soldiers-of-the-firstworld-war. For Australian forces visit the National Australian Archives website at naa.gov.au/explore-collection/defenceand-war-service-records/army-worldwar-i-1914-18. ¢

Quilters’ exhibition closing

11

u by Ann van Engelen

The Otamatea Quilters’ Annual Exhibition held at the Kauri Museum has more than 100 quilts for sale at the show which closes on November 22. “The exhibition is hung in the Volunteers Hall and is on display throughout the Otamatea Boarding House at the Kauri Museum,” says convenor Lyn King. “Depending on the type of quilting you do, depends on how long it takes to create. Some are made by machine and others are entirely handmade, including the design and applique. Handmade takes up to 18 months to make, but it is the satisfaction of crafting it that is lovely. “I learned quilting at a night class at Ruawai College in 1988 and took it up full-time when I left work in 1996. My quick turnover ones are machinemade and can take up to six weeks, depending on the intricacy. “Each year, we pick a charity to support with our quilt sales. This year we are contributing to Plunket and have made a selection of community quilts for cots and strollers, which will be donated to families in need. “There are 57 quilts that will go to the Plunket Society, and the nurses distribute them to families who will

benefit from them. The others are for sale because we had enquiries for people to be able to purchase them. The funds for each quilt sale go toward the fabric for the next year’s community service. “The satisfaction of finishing a project is the biggest buzz in the world. When you do something for someone else, it makes you feel good too. You know that something you have made is going to make someone else’s life that little bit better. “There are childthemed fabrics, not over-elaborate and most are machine-made and will go through the wash. You have to think of your end recipient. Last year the children at Stand Children’s Services were able to choose their own quilt. It was a bonus for the staff to be able to give the children such a special item all of their own to keep.” Elinor Beazley’s quilt called 2019: A Great Year, is on display and this took 12 months for her to complete. “Elinor did one block a day for 12 months with machine applique and ink

pen colouring sticks. There is also a lot of detail in Betty Cairns’ Japanese Memories quilt. It is very big and has the big Japanese running stitch and machine stitch as well. “Our group has a challenge every year. Sometimes it will be a topic, a pattern or a word. It is their interpretation of the challenge. We have 16 members take up the challenge, and the variety and diversity of the result are just amazing. We have a lot of fun quilting. The quilters get wrapped up in their quilting and just go for it. Some of the designs are very awe-inspiring, they are a clever

bunch, and they enjoy the challenges I give them. “We encourage anyone interested in sewing, quilting and craft to come along before November 22 and enjoy our display of creativity. If you are interested in learning to quilt, enquiries can be made at the museum. To see the display, the $5 door vouchers are available from local sewing centres and at the museum, which is open seven days a week 9am to 5pm.” For more information go to kaurimuseum.com/whats-on-item/ otamatea-quilters-exhibition. ¢

12 November 20 2020 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Beyond the breaking surf u by Andy Bryenton

Since 2002 Aotearoa Surf School has been introducing people to the ocean. The mighty Pacific is a constant companion to those who live on the East Coast, near Mangawhai and Te Arai where surf school classes take place. As the owner Che has discovered, even locals can find out more about the ocean and themselves by learning something new. “People come to us looking for a change,” he says. “It could be a change of pace or a change of lifestyle. You can learn to surf as a young schoolkid or well into your 70s, and it’s transformative.” That’s a big term, and one which is not often used to describe a sport. The culture and philosophy of surfing, a passion that Che shares willingly with his students, is deeper than simply riding waves. There’s a connection to the ecology of the ocean and seashore, and a feeling of freedom, he explains, which add to what other surfers have called ‘the Zen-like calm between water and sky’. Poetry aside, there’s a very real educational content

to what Che and his hand-picked team of tutors are achieving out there on the east coast. Lessons take place morning and afternoon, with a range of learners at different levels of skill delving not just into the fitness and physicality of surfing but also into the worlds of marine ecology, sustainability and aquatic wildlife. Just as a mountaineer learns to respect the alpine environment and its creatures, so too does a surfer come to value the ocean and seashore. “It’s about doing what they want to do and having fun, but doing it in the right way, having awareness and respect for people and the environment, which leads to a better understanding and a better way of living,” says Che. The surf school has even worked closely with Sustainable Kaipara, taking the ecological aspect of the business

to a new level and being responsible citizens of both the Kaipara and the world. That ethos is flowing through to those who learn, which can only be a good thing. Those learners include children, of course. Aotearoa Surf School has provided surf class days for local primary schools in Dargaville and

People come to us looking for a change

Maungaturoto, as well as donating their time to an annual free ‘learn to surf’ day, the last of which attracted 140 youngsters. However, a big surprise and delight to Che and the team, is when those childrens’ parents get the chance to give surfing a try too.

13

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER November 20 2020

p Che and his team are passionate about the ocean and its ecology, as well as the sport of surfing

Every morning you should wake up, look out at the Poor Knights and the Hen and Chickens Islands, and think that you’re in a tropical paradise.

“On the last day of our kids’ surf camps, for example, we give the parents encouragement to get out on the water as well,” he says. “Some of them need a bit of confidence-building. Not only do we see families learning something together; many of those parents join up to our adult classes and keep coming back. We want to provide support for people to be empowered; to give them some freedom and confidence. It’s good for the soul!” Surfing can become a lifestyle easily. It’s one, which can take a person around the world, meeting like-minded travellers and making new friends. In the days before Covid, Che arranged winter surf tours to Bali so that Kiwi surfers could experience some tropical waves when the weather here was cold. He himself says he started out

surfing as a teen when he was able to afford his own vehicle and head south from Auckland to the Waikato coast. The passion became a career, but now after being involved with introducing folks to the surfing way of life for 18 years, Che says his focus has shifted. “While I’m still a devoted surfer, my passion now is people. Every day in this job, you’re seeing changed lives, and that’s incredible.” This passion for people, and the joy in unlocking their potential to new experiences, has seen Aotearoa Surf School pitch in with many local enterprises such as the Mangawhai Activity Zone, as well as the many programmes for schools and children mentioned above. It’s also driven Che to push through the uncertainty of Covid, and refocus and invest in local tourism at a time when international

visitors are unable to enjoy our beaches and hospitality. “We love to expand beyond our current boundaries,” he said, noting that the school has added four new staff despite Covid. “We’re here to provide new and exciting experiences, and in that spirit, we decided that we needed to be able to accommodate guests. Why should people from further afield miss out on the east coast experience?” Hence the construction of a designer eco-pod based retreat, with sweeping vistas over the ocean and islands. Che says that the aim is for people to be able to stay for longer periods, bring their families, and savour the surfing experience. “Every morning you should wake up, look out at the Poor Knights and the Hen and Chickens Islands, and think that you’re in a tropical paradise.”

During the summer, that’s absolutely true. The sandy beaches and bluegreen expanse of the Pacific Ocean are a huge drawcard, and a stunning backdrop to Mangawhai and Te Arai. It’s one of the reasons the area is a haven for outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts and the site of one of the world’s most exclusive golf courses. Che and his tutors have been helping people find a deeper appreciation for this beautiful place for 18 years, and at the same time helping build skills, confidence and self-empowerment for young and old. With the attitude of ‘nothing but excellence’, even a global pandemic hasn’t been able to slow them down, and the invitation stands. If you want to go past your own limitations and discover a new world just past the tide line, come and dive in. ¢
