p Sarah Bray (left) and Stephanie Gibson, from Sustainable Kaipara, discussed their project with MP Matt King

“I am actually in Mangawhai a lot more than people think,” he told The Weekend Lifestyler. “In this case, it’s a timely visit too, because I had my first meeting of the day with Sarah Bray and Stephanie Gibson, from Sustainable Kaipara, particularly in the wake of the recent decision by Auckland Council to go against the proposed landfill in the Dome Valley. “The last thing we need in a picturesque valley on the virtual shores of the Kaipara Harbour, with the threat of accidental pollution. That’s simply crazy.” Mr King said meeting with Sustainable Kaipara reinforced his view that effective waste material and rubbish control was “the way of the future that we all need to embrace.” Sarah Bray was also upbeat after her meeting. “We were able to go over the background of Sustainable Kaipara and our vision for the future, and we learned of his concern about waste control from his viewpoint as a farmer,” she said. Sustainable Kaipara

recently received funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund through the Ministry for the Environment, and also from Kaipara District Council, to progress smart recycling and waste minimisation programmes with businesses and the community. The MP was in a relaxed mood, with the first meeting of the day at Brewed As Collective — Coffee Shop at Mangawhai Heads, followed by lunch and a community chat at Bennetts. After that, it was a meeting with Ian Margan from the new ratepayers’ group, Mangawhai Matters to discuss the Mangawhai Central development. However, when The Weekend Lifestyler sought advice on the development from Viranda Partners, comment was withheld because of what was referred to as ‘planning changes.’ Also scheduled for a meeting, as this edition went to print, was a discussion of the Mangawhai wharf restoration project as well as with the NZ Fairy Tern Charitable Trust at the Mangawhai Tavern. ¢

Water provides land use options u by Andy Bryenton

The future of farming in the Kaipara will come with diversity and picking the right crops. That’s the message from the Kaipara KickStart programme’s Kaipara Kai initiative, and now, too, from infrastructure providers the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust. While reticulation and irrigation from a series of large-scale dams will provide options to change land use patterns for all farmers, Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust deputy chair Dover Samuels is especially urging Maori landowners in the Mid North and Kaipara districts to discover the benefits of land-use change. Different ownership models mean that Maori land is often administered differently from other rural resources, and decisions can take time and involve additional negotiation. The trust has applied for resource consent to build a 750,000 cubic metre reservoir near Kaikohe. It is well advanced to submit applications for two others, one each in the Mid North and Kaipara. A Kaipara dam site was blessed in late August and will be positioned on the Pouto Peninsula. The reservoirs would deliver water under pressure to landowners within reach of the schemes, as well as be available to bolster municipal supply

for community use. All this means that the viability of more profitable crops would come online for all farmers who were willing to embrace change. Construction of the first reservoir near Kaikohe is expected to provide up to 70 jobs; one could reasonably expect that to be replicated at the Kaipara location, too. “Conver ting land from pastoral farming to horticultural use requires investment, vision and leadership. Once it’s done though, and with a reliable source of water at the farm gate, the returns can be substantially higher per hectare,” Mr Samuels said. Avocado was an example of a profitable crop particularly suited the Northland climate. New Zealand Avocado, which represents avocado growers, has an industry strategy to quadruple sales to $280 million and triple productivity by 2023. It had evaluated the international market and was very positive about the potential for growth. ¢

4 October 2 2020 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Conducting creativity u by Andy Bryenton

Local artist Gayle Forster has been creating visions from mixed media since 1979, so finding inspiration in nature for her works is by no means uncommon.

p Gayle Forster’s work took a turn towards new materials and forms with the advent of Covid lockdown, incorporating copper wire to bring forth flocks of characterful shorebirds

What is striking about the latest visions shared by Gayle is their juxtaposition of the natural world and materials which are sourced from the basics of human industry. An example is the scene of shorebirds feeding, playing, defending and coexisting on the estuary shoreline, currently displayed in the Kaipara District Council’s offices at the Hub, Mangawhai. It’s a characterful piece which shows the energy and life of the region’s birds, and it’s fashioned entirely from copper wire. “During our recent lockdown, it was a pleasure and indeed very soul-restoring to walk at low tide and witness these birds daily going about their business,” says Gayle. “Life simply went on. Their presence was also a reminder of our desire to connect with and protect our environment.” Copper wire, found materials and recycled media all came to the fore in Gayle’s creative process during the lockdown, in what she says is a departure from her usual style. Copper wire is a common theme, incorporated

not just into her shorebirds but also into a wall hanging which incorporates bark cloth and relief prints, works crafted with wire, recycled packaging and woodcut techniques. The ductile curves of the wire lent a new aspect to Gayle’s vision. “These quirky birds were made from manipulating several gauges of recycled copper wire. During this process, a natural momentum occurred that enabled the birds to take on unique characters that are funny, humorous and thoughtful.” Gayle’s themes have always been about changes to the land, the water and the issues that arise from these conflicts. Mangawhai Spit was given Wildlife Refuge status in 1982 to preserve a natural habitat for shorebirds that had suffered from urban encroachment and destructive recreational activities. It is also the home of the endangered Fairy Tern, Tara iti. Gayle believes we must maintain the feeding grounds for these protected birds so the refuge remains intact. ¢

Market inspiration grows u by Andy Bryenton

The popularity of artisanal market days showcasing organic produce, crafts, cuisine and local creativity is on the rise, with new market day dates confirmed for the towns of Wellsford and Te Hana. Maja Moors, speaking for the Wellsford market, and Linda Clapham, for the Te Hana market, say that their plan for alternating Friday night events through spring and summer is designed to do more than boost local commerce and entrepreneurial spirit. “Our plan is to bring the community of Te Hana and Wellsford together through feast and fun. We would like you to be part of our project, so please contact us!” said the organisers. They have secured venues at the Wellsford

Community Centre and Te Hana’s Te Ao Marama Marae, the State Highway One Maori cultural centre, respectively. A free shuttle service has been arranged to run between Wellsford and Te Hana during market opening hours. These are planned to be from 4.30pm until 8pm, Fridays, beginning with an inaugural gala on October 16. The following week the market moves to Wellsford. It will continue to alternate week in, week out, throughout the summer, with a break for Christmas.

Children get creative

Hands on experience in arts and crafts is on offer in Mangawhai Artists Inc school holiday workshops for primary school pupils from October 5–9. “These will be held in the new art workspace behind the gallery at 45 Moir Street, next to the library. If your child enjoys creative activities and exploration, then these activities and workshops are highly recommended,” says committee member Christine Basham. “These will be the first groups to use the new workspace, and the committee is thrilled to see all their hard work come to fruition alongside the overwhelming public support now in action. The programme starts with tie-dyeing led by Karen Williamson on October 5

from 9.30am–12.30pm and is suitable for children aged eight years old and over. Each child can bring three items of clothing and will be able to create patterns and then tie-dye them. The cost is $30. In the afternoon Raewyn Vague is offering introductive quilling for eightto ten-year-olds. Also called paper filigree, this workshop involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create decorative designs. The cost is $35 and includes all materials. She is also offering an afternoon class on October 6 for children aged 10 and older.

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 2 2020

p Hollyhocks, like other plants, can be prone to a range of insect pests including aphids, spider mites and scale insects

Beatrix would be delighted u by Liz Clark

If anyone has read the tales of Peter Rabbit, the illustrations of its author depict the classic English country garden with tall hollyhocks throughout. These days hollyhocks are a favourite for both the classic and contemporary garden setting. Tallgrowing, these delightful flowers now come in a spectacular range of colours, providing a backdrop for the spring and summer flowering plants. Hollyhocks originated from Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean sea regions and include more than 1,500 species within its genera. Sow seeds in trays of good-quality seed raising mix to a depth of 6cm. Seedlings will emerge between 14 and 17 days. Choose a well-drained, sunny spot to plant once your seedlings are large enough to transplant. While hollyhocks need half a day of sunlight, ensure your plants are protected from the intense afternoon sun. Add in plenty of organic matter and space the plants 30–40cm apart. Hollyhocks tolerate a range of soil conditions from pH six to eight. If growing in containers, ensure drainage is adequate and an appropriate soil medium is used. Staking should be done while the plants are still young to prevent damage to the roots. Protect from slugs and snails with an appropriate bait, use a non-toxic type if you’re concerned about pets and small children. Mulch well during the

summer months and water at the base to prevent any fungal disease. Insect pests can be alleviated by companion planting or spraying with insecticide. Growing between 1.2m and 2.4m in height hollyhocks come in a range of colours, the main ones being blue, purple, pink, white and yellow. Colour coordinated with other flowering plants; hollyhocks make for a spectacular display and a grand statement. Start off with the rare Jet Black to create an eye-catching addition to your garden backdrop. The dried flowers of this cultivar can be used for potpourri; the plants mature after 90 days from transplant and grow to a height of 1.2m to 1.8m. If you’re looking for a smaller variety, New Zealand seed suppliers are offering the mixed-range Queens Dwarf Doubles. The blooms appear as tight, double clusters of fluffy flowers coming in shades of purple, rose red, lilac rose, salmon, yellow and white. Ideal for containers and large pots on the deck or near the entranceway. Maturity from transplant is 90 days and grows to a height of 50cm. Other varieties to watch out for are The Bridesmaids, Ebony Towers, Dwarf Majorette Mix, Chaters Double Mixed, Happy Lights and Pink Powderpuff. ¢

p Mangawhai resident Claudia Moir came up with her boutique travel package idea to showcase Mangawhai to people across the country

p Claudia encourages people to make special memories and broaden their life experiences by travelling locally and beyond

Adventures for all u by Ann van Engelen

Claudia Moir moved to Mangawhai 18 years ago, after immigrating from Vienna, Austria and believes there is no better place she would rather be. “I had come to New Zealand in my 20s and travelled the country and met my ex-husband. We later moved to Mangawhai. While our marriage did not work out, I wanted my two boys Ben and Elias to grow up here,” says Claudia. “They are now in their 20s. Ben went on to do his masters in osteopathy in Auckland and is currently working for Mangawhai Osteopathy. Elias is the keyboardist in the local band Sojourn. “I then met my husband, Grant, and we had two more children together, Alicia and Toby. Alicia is a keen surfer and skateboarder, and Toby plays golf. I love it here as there is so much to offer. Coming from Austria, we don’t have beaches or the sea and moving from Vienna to Mangawhai was beautiful. “I have worked in the travel industry since I was young. I did real estate and

customer service roles when I had the children but always came back to the travel industry. I decided to establish a travel broker business eight years ago because I love helping people to book holidays all over the world.

I believe that life is all about experiences and special memories

“When Covid hit, and our borders closed, I decided to reinvent my business since we can’t travel abroad. I came up with the idea to handcraft itineraries for people to discover

Mangawhai and started Mangawhai Adventures. Now, I help fellow Kiwis experience what our little slice of paradise has to offer. “I believe that life is all about experiences and special memories created by special people and the places we visit. Mangawhai has several stunning surf beaches within close proximity, SUP and kayaking. The Mangawhai Adventure Zone is a state of the art skatepark and outdoor recreational facility. These are places we can be proud of. I love that we have some of the top golf courses in the country, and we also have very nice wineries. “I love creating amazing travel packages, which become lifelong memories as people experience the best our region has to offer. We carefully select the activities

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 2 2020

p Originally from Austria, Claudia loves living in Kaipara and enjoys being able to catch fresh fish and loves the fact she can walk the beach and enjoy all nature has to offer

It is exciting getting to know more local businesses and accommodation providers. I enjoy putting packages together to offer something that you can’t just book online. and accommodation to suit our guests’ preferences. “At present, I am in Wanaka for a holiday with my daughter because I believe it is important to do something special with each child. I thought she might like to try skiing and I encourage people to create special memories instead of collecting things. Life is about places we visit and people we meet along the way — that is why I do what I do. “With the times we are in now, life is about helping people get over this whole Covid thing. To me, it is a project to do something different to make life work. I don’t believe we have to stop travelling. Kaipara has so much to offer. It’s not just about me. “It is about giving back to the wider community through the travel packages I create. I have a food and wine

package and use a local taxi service to take people along. I include local cafes and restaurants, markets and activities. It all helps spread the fun around and it is a sustainable angle. We have to all make the most of the situation we are in. “In Austria, we used to ski and travel a lot with my family growing up. I have vivid memories of family trips, but I have never looked back since my move to Mangawhai, it is such a beautiful place. I love fresh fish and seafood — we don’t have that in Austria. We went fishing the other day, and catching a snapper and having it fresh is a very special thing. “Grant’s family is one of the original settlers. Captain Moir arrived on a ship and settled here about four or five generations ago. It is special being connected to the community

in that way. Once I had lived here for 10 years, I started to feel like a local. Eighteen years later, I know a lot of people and have loved building my client base through my NZ Travel Brokers’ business. “We are still working through refunds and credits for people who had travel cancelled. There is still an opportunity to travel later, and I am still here for my clients. I am sure one day the world will open again, and people will start travelling, but for now, we do what we can do. “It is exciting getting to know more local businesses and accommodation providers. I enjoy putting packages together to offer something that you can’t just book online. It is the local knowledge that makes it different. I like helping people with different interests, from family trips to food

and wine, pamper packages, golf or fishing charters. It is nice to know that I can help everyone get a little slice of the pie. “Ultimately being in a community where people can help people get ahead is a positive thing. I think the whole pandemic has brought the best and worst out of people. We are positive people and believe in making the best out of what life throws at you. “The variety of things we have here in Kaipara, the estuary, walking tracks, bush, nature and surf. There is something for everyone. Life is about change, and there are more families moving in now, and everything is growing. You can’t stop progress, it is what it is, and the world always changes. There are so many amazing resources here. I believe there is no better place to live.” ¢
