Honouring a life well lived. At Morris & Morris our focus has always been at providing a funeral that honours the life of the loved one that has passed away. It is important to us that we keep providing our community with the ability to say goodbye in a manner that is representative of the loved one that has passed away.

As qualified Funeral Directors we know that not having a proper goodbye can have severe implications for the family members who are left behind. Giving family members the opportunity to honour the life that was lived, not only encourages but delivers on healthy grieving.

“John and I were childhood sweethearts and caught up again years later in Auckland,” says Michele. “I had five children, and then worked in corporate and was looking to get out of the city. My dream was a house on the hill, looking out to sea where I could rescue animals. John sent me toward Waipū, and I found the perfect property. “We moved here and would take in elderly dogs that people couldn’t look after anymore. I came up with Wandering Angels as I have a daughter who loves angels, and most of the dogs I get have been found wandering. “I worked closely with another large animal rescue and started rescuing and fostering mostly older or big dogs that

in the cow pats, smell the flowers and enjoy life until they go over the rainbow bridge. They just want cuddles, food and a warm place to be loved. “I can’t believe how much I have accomplished in two years. My friends help me foster, and people have started to help me with the costs of food, registrations, microchipping, vet bills and other costs. “Rescuing animals is expensive, and I am really appreciative of people who can help me with blankets, towels, kitty litter, food and other expenses as we have no financial backing. People can contact us through the Wandering Angels Animal Sanctuary Facebook page if they would like to support us.

I have people in Auckland, Northland and the South Island who foster animals until we can find them safe, forever homes needed saving. I love giving animals security and love. “My daughters are very supportive and got my website up and the Wandering Angels Facebook page organised. I rescue what animals I can. If I can’t take an animal, I try to help find them somewhere else to go.” Michele has a specific dog area, and the cats and kittens have an indoor setting. “I have a piglet called Caramel, a lamb, chickens, calves and cats. I seem to get animals no one else wants, like the three-legged ones. Sometimes they are here for a few months, sometimes longer. Some come and run the paddocks, roll

“It all helps. One friend even buys a bag of chicken feed every week. I have people in Auckland, Northland and the South Island who foster animals until we can find them safe, forever homes. “I put pets needing a home up on our Facebook page, and it works well. I have several dogs waiting for their new homes and have met some really fantastic people adopting pets. “The reality of being a rescuer is it costs until you find the animal a home. We have some that will never leave because they have been through enough in life, so those wandering angels stay with us because they deserve a happy ending.” ¢

Pooling community produce

u by Ann van Engelen

The Mangawhai Growers Market is a result of local growers joining together to deliver their produce to customers during the recent lockdowns. “The idea came about because we had businesses doing deliveries and crossing over each other,” says organiser Trudy Barnett. “We had people like our egg lady at Happy Chicks free-range eggs and an avocado grower doing their contactless deliveries at the same time. It seemed really mad, and I thought, surely we could organise ourselves to pool our resources for delivery.” Trudy has worked in technology for some 40 years and knew the organising part wouldn’t be too difficult.

leaves off her tree and takes the time to tie them with a lovely string. “There may be granny with a 50-yearold plum tree in fruit once a year. We would be happy to take those for her and offer them for sale to the neighbourhood. “Even if we have 10 people growing limes, we accept them because it means if someone can’t provide one week or goes away, others are there to step in. We simply agree on a price point. “Orders are taken online at mangawhaigrowers.nz. Customers order by shopping via a collection such as

Our aim is to promote local growers to feed local people “We decided the way to differentiate ourselves as a collective was to have only local growers supplying. “We needed to have a direct relationship between the grower and the customer. Our aim is to promote local growers to feed local people, and we are selling at the lowest price we can sell at. “The collective doesn’t clip the ticket on any supplier, and I donate my services. Everything is presented well and fresh. One lady provides dried bay

citrus or cold-pressed oils, or you can search the products you require, such as avocado. “If you are a cafe or want to buy in bulk, we also have packs available such as 100 export quality avocados. We have a delivery fee of $5 to keep the prices low, or people can collect from us. “The initiative is going really well, and the orders are doubling weekly. We have access to products like honey, eggs, bananas, gourmet mushrooms, nuts,

herbs, fresh vegetables and anything else people grow. People are welcome to join us. “We also have a lady who makes fantastic croissants from scratch right here in Mangawhai. It is a lot of fun, and it is nice to keep the community in fresh food, knowing the prominence of it. A lot is spray-free, and we have soil, permaculture, subtropical and

hydroponic and aquaponic operations. It is really interesting what people are doing. “We are very passionate about what we do — we grow quality food for people who want to eat quality food. It all started by wanting to ensure our communities could access what they need, especially when you can’t get to the shops due to lockdowns.” ¢

The growers’ challenge u by Ann van Engelen

Spring is here, and National Gardening Week will be running from October 18–25 with this year’s theme across the country being Grow to Give.

p People are encouraged to be involved in National Gardening Week and grow vegetables to share with others in their community

“While some Kiwis are enjoying home-grown vegetables, many are going without altogether,” says Yates spokesperson Fiona Arthur. “This National Gardening Week, people are being encouraged to growan-extra-row to share with neighbours, community pantries, food banks and other local food donation agencies. “Popping a few extra seeds in the dirt does not require much effort but could mean so much for another family in need. “To help get your extra row underway, Yates is lending a helping hand. Water regularly and feed with a liquid fertiliser for thriving plants. “It is also a great way to get the children involved and take pride in sharing what they have grown with others. “For larger areas, if there’s a lawn that can be utilised, turn it into a foodproducing paradise. “Northland has a broad range of soil types, mainly sand in coastal areas and

Either soil type can be coaxed into producing an abundance of vegetable crops. “Add in compost, sheep pellets, old hay and blood and bone to build up the organic matter in the soil before planting out seedlings and seeds following the grower instructions on the seed packet. The pumpkin’s broad leaves will also cool the soil, preventing moisture loss.” If you do not know who to share your produce with once you have grown your veggies, please visit the Yates website to find a list of the organisations in your area that would welcome your donation of fresh home-grown produce. “National Gardening Week aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communities and

closer connections with nature,” Ms Arthur said. “Whether it is a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening.” Integrity Community Media has a Yates gardening hamper for children to give away valued at $200. The pack includes a variety of veggie seeds, both new and some old favourites and other gardening products. To be in to win, tell us who you will be sharing your produce with and why at comp@integrity.nz. The competition closes at midday, Friday, October 15. ¢

Dreams come true u by Ann van Engelen

Winning the Marquee Hire Whangārei’s Win a Wedding competition was a pleasant surprise for Terry Gillard and Kelly Jacobsen of Waipū. Sponsored by various businesses, including local marriage celebrant Sue Bellamy, the prize package is worth $25,000. “I saw the competition and wasn’t sure whether to enter or not. I did but didn’t tell Terry,” says Kelly. “I waited a whole month in silence and was surprised to win. There were a lot of entries from across Northland, and we were very grateful to be chosen. “My nana and poppa used to bring my dad to Waipū Cove camping as a child so my whole life I would come up from Auckland with my family. My mum and I eventually moved north, and Terry and I met a few months later. “We moved to Auckland together and returned about five years ago. He got a job working at ITM, and I was working as a call centre team leader from home. Together we have five sons, and it has been a lot of fun. “Four years ago, Terry’s friend Hamish Bye known as ‘Hamo’ or ‘Dembones’ suggested they open a gym to help youth but tragically, before opening, Hamish died. “With the blessing of Hamish’s family, Terry named the gym Dembones Fitness after Hamish when it opened. “We are Boxfit focussed and add different classes in. At present, Terry is training some guys to do The Big Fight event on October 30 at the Celtic Barn in Waipū, the night after our wedding.

“When I entered the competition, I just ticked the box that we are free for October 29, so we are going to have a big weekend, lockdown permitting. “Terry also runs Youth Fit Academy, and my hobby is a nail technician, and I work at Marsden Childcare as the cook. I love that our youngest Carter can come with me. Baking is my forte, and we have a lot of fun there.” Kelly says they are very excited for the upcoming wedding day. “It is exciting to have Marquee Hire and the sponsors set up at Davies Bay for us. We are very grateful because we had decided on a small wedding as we couldn’t afford a large one. “We had never met Sue, but as soon as we did, she got the fact that we are a blended family and understood how much it means to us to all become one. “We have been together for 10 years and are excited for the future. The boys are all involved, and we are really excited and nervous. I am not a showy person, but we are planning a beautiful day as it is such a generous competition to win.” Marriage Celebrant Sue Bellamy says the competition was tough. “Kelly wrote a really lovely story. They are a fabulous couple, and this is their dream wedding opportunity,” says Sue. “It is lovely that they are local, and I get to marry them. It has been great getting to know them and their family, and it will be a very exciting day.” ¢

Covid-19 business support update u by Corinne Smith

It’s important to keep current with what’s available for businesses at this present time, including changes to resurgence support, wage subsidy payments and working from home (WFH) costs and reimbursements. Let us know if you need help with any of these support applications and providing any accounting records. Resurgence support — The resurgence support payment (RSP) is available to help businesses directly affected when there is a move to alert level two or above for a week or more, especially relevant to sectors like hospitality and events, which face particular disruption as alert levels change. Businesses can apply to receive the lesser of:

• $1,500 plus $400 for each full-time equivalent (FTE) employee, up to a maximum of 50 FTEs, or • Four times (4x) the actual revenue drop experienced by the applicant The maximum payment is $21,500. Eligible businesses must have experienced at least a 30% drop in revenue or capital-raising ability for a seven-day period after the increased alert level. Where a business is one of a group of commonly owned businesses, that drop also needs to be present Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors corinne@altitudeadvisors.nz 021 252 7680

across the commonly owned group as a whole. Currently, businesses can apply three times for each fortnight in level four and three lockdowns. Wage subsidy August 2021 — Eligible employers and self-employed anywhere in the country may apply for the WSS if they expect a loss of 40% of revenue because of the alert level increase announced on August 17. The WSS rates have increased. Businesses will be eligible for $600 a week for each full-time equivalent employee and $359 a week, each part-time employee, paid as a two-week lump sum. Depreciation — For assets purchased on or after March 17 2021, the threshold permanently increases from $500 to $1,000. Leave support — The Leave Support Scheme (LSS) is available for employers, including the self-employed, to help pay employees who need to self-isolate and can’t work from home. It provides a two-week lump sum payment of either $585 a week for full-time workers or $350 a week for part-time workers. A short-term absence payment was added to cover eligible workers (including selfemployed) needing to stay at home

while awaiting Covid-19 test results. It provides a one-off (once for every 30 days) $350 payment. Loan products — The Small Business Cashflow Loan Scheme grants eligible businesses an interest-free loan (up to a capped maximum) if they repay it within two years. The scheme has been extended, broadening eligibility and extending its availability to 31 December 2023. Loss carry-back — A temporary tax loss carry-back scheme, limited to a three-year window, means losses in the 2020 or 2021 income years can be used to offset profits made the year immediately before. Provisional tax — If your business is affected by Covid-19 and you need to re-estimate your provisional tax as your income falls short of the estimate and provisional tax has been overpaid, it may be possible to arrange early refunds. Tax debt — If you are unable to pay tax by the due date, Inland Revenue has discretion to write-off penalties and interest. Contact them to indicate when tax can be paid or request instalment arrangements. You may be eligible for a UOMI write-off. ¢

The Kaipara art community celebrated local artists at the Kaipara Art Awards last Friday night. “The awards are a direct collaboration between Dargaville Artists Association and Mangawhai Artists Incorporated,” says chair John Pickworth. “Our vision of premiere events on the art calendar is now a reality to showcase our best artists and their endeavours. This is a celebration of artistic endeavour, excellence and bravery. “The subjects have inspired a diverse, uniquely kiwi engagement, with an extraordinary variety of media and artistic processes.” Artist-photographer Kenneth E Adams was this year’s judge. Graduating from the Elam School of Fine Arts with honours in painting, he was encouraged to study the work of the old masters by his professors, Garth Tapper and Colin McCahon. “Mr Adams assessed more than 40 works,” says Mr Pickworth. “Deb Hunter-Whitlock took first place for The French Art Shop Award in the 2D artworks section for her Sandspit Sanctuary painting. “Zivana Pauling’s horse head won The French Art Shop Award in 2D art using other media.

“Aaron McConchie’s Whose Tern Is It took first place for The Westmoreland Homes 3D artwork. The Gordon Harris Art and Graphics Store Judges Award, through the eyes of local artists, was taken home by Geoff Ruthe. “Trista Ecuyer won the Creative Northland Emerging Artist Award for her macro-photograph titled The Pollinator.” Trista says: “When I found out I was awarded the Emerging Artist Award, I felt very encouraged that I was heading in the right direction. ”I mainly photograph flowers and really enjoy the editing process. I have been selling in our gallery at home but plan to sell in other outlets. I am working towards having an exhibition with my father, who will make wood pieces in response to my photographic images. “I have really appreciated the support and advice from Lee-Ann at Tawa Imaging.” The exhibition is presently on display at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville. It will move to the Mangawhai Artists Gallery on November 4. Entry to the exhibition is free. ¢

An artistic fascination u by Ann van Engelen

Growing up in Sydney, Australia, Marion Stutz travelled internationally before making her way to the coast of New Zealand with her husband Peter, whom she met in London. “I was a shy child and always considered myself to be very fortunate to have had a wonderful family life,“ says Marion. “My father had a passion for music and art. My mother came from an artistic family, with her mother being an opera singer and painter. In my early teens,

when I was 24 years old. I then went to the Maldives for three months en route to London, where I worked as a cook for a large law firm. “On an early European holiday, I met my husband Peter, who was from Taranaki, and we worked and lived in London for two years before moving

I would spend hours filling books with pastel drawings and poetry. “It was something I loved, along with writing and reading. My parents kept the books, and I still have them. For my 16th birthday, my dad gave me a beautiful introduction to art book. It is one of my most important treasured possessions I own today. I worked in the hotel industry in Sydney until leaving for Sri Lanka

Before returning to work in the hotel industry, I helped set up a fashion jewellery business and was involved with designing, which was a wonderful creative outlet for me. “I have been so fortunate over the years to work in many varied and interesting roles including art gallery assistant, Helensville A&P Show

The community galleries have some incredible work on display. We are all artists doing different things, and having started art later in life — I am forever grateful for the support I receive

confidence in myself and forward with all that was within me. “After Dio, I focussed on my art and attended acrylic painting courses. One course was with Ingrid Boot, a wonderful artist in Orewa who sells her works worldwide. She confirmed that I was OK with art. “Later, I did ceramics and printmaking, including an eight-week oil painting class with Wendy Leech at the Mangawhai Artists Studio. I had always worked with acrylic, but the oils turned my head, and now I work mainly with oil. “Once again, it reinforced that I should be doing something creative, and I had many ideas of what I wanted to do.” Marion focusses on still life, landscapes and portraiture. “All of these subjects tie together with how I play with form and my use of colour. I love finding surprising things and will often put a surprise in my works.

Most of my landscape paintings start in a realistic formation. I then add odd colours while I break up and change the backgrounds. “I constantly learn, practise and try things to see how different combinations of colour work. I like experimenting, such as using oil paint versus acrylic on certain things. “I love experimenting with processes and doing things in different ways. I get great joy from painting daily and like to run with a thought even though some ideas don’t work. “I have been asked to do commissions for people, which I still find terrifying, as I definitely have my own abstract interpretation of things. You always hope your art resonates with people. “Being part of a community art space is important, especially for people starting on their creative journey. The

people who run art spaces are very supportive and encouraging. “The community galleries have some incredible work on display. We are all artists doing different things, and having started art later in life — I am forever grateful for the support I receive. “I have also enjoyed being a part of the Creative Matters podcasts with my artist friend Mandy Jakich. Mandy set up the award-winning Creative Matters six years ago, providing creative, educational opportunities to enrich the lives of children, educators, artists and community. “This year, she started her podcasts with New Zealand artists, with whom she has conversations about their creative journey, process and art practice. I am currently working on an upcoming joint exhibition with Mel Juer at Mangawhai Artists, running from March 24 to April 6, 2022.

“I love the incredible freedom I have through art and how much joy and satisfaction I get when people react with my work. Thanks to Peter’s support, I can invest my mind, body and soul into it. “If I was working full-time, I wouldn’t have the headspace or time to do it. Our children Emma and Alex, and our friends have been incredibly supportive too. “I love clay and the feeling, textures, colours and fluidity of paint. I am inspired by everything. The land, ocean, sky, the clouds, people, interiors and textures. I enjoy everything about fabrics and colours and hope to inspire others to follow their bliss. “I tell people don’t be scared but enjoy the ride. It is incredible to express yourself creatively. If it is in you, it is important to get it out. It is a gift, and if it brings you and others joy, it has to be a good thing.” ¢

In the early days of European architecture in New Zealand, a clear line was drawn between the indoors and the outdoors, representing a psychological barrier brought across from Mother England. Things were different there. With harsher winters in the countryside and overcrowding in the cities, homes developed for the British way of life tended to be insular, clearly demarcating the indoors and outdoors. Access to the home proper, where the family lived and socialised, was often by way of entry halls and visitors’ parlours that were far

The first hint of change came about, both in New Zealand and across the Tasman, with the addition of extensive porches to villa and bungalow-style homes built in the old-world style. Conceding that the balmy summers of the Antipodes called for a place neither out in the sun or behind closed doors, these gracious old homes

more about keeping up appearances than letting down your hair. So steeped in the northern building tradition were those early designers that they often covered up fine local woods like kauri and totara, lamenting a lack of oak panelling. More than one house was installed according to British plans, with all the windows and living areas facing south, as the draughtsperson who sketched it out was working from the opposite hemisphere.

paved the way for a reclamation of the outdoors as an intrinsic living and entertaining space. Some say the next big change came after the second world war when returning soldiers demanded affordable housing for their new families during the baby boom — influences from the places they’d seen overseas crept in. The outdoor living of Italy and North Africa made a mark on what came to be called the Pacific or New Zealand Vernacular

style. Cheaper, better quality glass was another product of wartime industry advances. Large areas that linked the outdoors with the inside became a feature for young homeowners, taking advantage of prices as low as $50,000 for an Auckland quarter acre with a new home on-site. Cinnamon Rolls

13

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 8 2021

u by Jessica Keesing

Looking for soft, cinnamon delightfulness, with some sweetness to boot, well look no more. It’s a bit of a labour of love, but they’re delightful, best shared with many others as it’s a fairly large recipe. INGREDIENTS Cinnamon roll dough 4½–5 cups flour ¹⁄³ cup white sugar 4½ tsp yeast 1 tsp salt 1½ cups water 85g unsalted butter 1 large egg Filling 55g butter (room temperature) ½ cup light brown sugar, packed 1 tbsp cinnamon Icing 2 cups icing sugar 1–2 tsp vanilla extract ¹⁄³ cup milk

METHOD In a large mixing bowl, combine two cups of flour, sugar, yeast and salt. In a heat safe bowl, combine the water and butter, cut into tablespoon size pieces. Heat in the microwave for 30–45 seconds, until warm to the touch. Once warm, pour water and butter combo into dry ingredients along with the egg. Mix with a wooden spoon. Add in two more cups of flour and mix. It should turn pretty thick and sticky at this point. Add in another ½ cup of flour and mix again. It should now turn shaggy and become difficult to stir. Once it reaches that point, set the spoon to the side and use your hands to mix and knead the dough.

It will be sticky, so add in another halfcup of flour and continue kneading until it turns into a smooth mass that’s soft and tacky. With a clean finger, press into the dough and if your finger is sticky, add another ¼ cup of flour. If not, then shape and cut into a ball and rest uncovered for 10 minutes. When the 10 minutes is up, the dough should have puffed up, but not quite doubled in size. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and pat into a rough rectangle, then roll out until it’s about one to two centimetres thick. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Spread on room temperature butter, then sprinkle over with sugar and cinnamon mixture and pat on to butter.

Leave a border all around the outside of the dough. Working from the edge closest to you, start rolling until you have a long sausage. Using a serrated knife, cut into 2.5cm rolls. Pop into a greased baking dish, and cover to rise for an hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C and bake for 25–30 minutes or until the tops are a light golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before icing. Combine all the icing ingredients together in a bowl and pour over buns. Serve warm and enjoy!

Supporting the rescue service u by Ann van Engelen

With the Northland Rescue Helicopter flying our skies for 33 years, the month of October sees the annual fundraising appeal get underway to support the service. Northland’s three rescue choppers flew 332 missions in the three months until August 30, compared to 248 for the same period last year and 920 call-outs for the year to the end of August. “If that trend continues, the service will surpass yet another record for annual flights after totalling more than 1,115 in 2020, compared to 953 in 2019,” said Northland Emergency Services Trust chair Paul Ahlers. “We really need the ongoing support from the Northland community and visitors to the region. I must pay

particular tribute to our founding sponsors Top Energy and Northpower, who have been with us since day one. “They have contributed millions of dollars since 1988 to help keep people safe. That sponsorship means we can better ensure people in Northland are given the best chance of survival and wellbeing in the golden hour after an accident or medical event. “Not only that, but Northpower and Top Energy manage our annual fundraising appeal and contribute $250,000 towards the appeal every year. They contribute lots more in the background without wanting recognition.” Top Energy and Northpower chief executives, Russell Shaw and Andrew McLeod, respectively, say the Northland Rescue Helicopters are essential for a region like Northland with so many remote pockets of land and the diversity of the landscape. “We all know someone who has been helped by the service, and that is why we continue to support it and encourage people to donate to the annual fundraising appeal,” the pair say. Ryan Hall says he is forever grateful after his son Kayden, a student at Bream Bay College, needed the chopper service recently. “On April 22, I received a phone call from my daughter Sophie saying that a ute carrying Kayden hit a truck headon,” says Ryan. “The driver of the ute passed away at the scene. Passersby

removed Kayden from the ute and laid him on the side of the road where Sophie comforted him.” Kayden had suffered a broken right femur. “I turned up minutes after the accident, and it was my worst nightmare. It was really bad. The Northland Rescue Helicopter guys and medics were incredible. After they stabilised Kayden, we were flown to Starship in Auckland. “The flight was scary due to the fear of what Kayden’s internal injuries could be, and his leg looked awful. The crew were incredible, to say the least. They ensured at all times, Kayden and I were able to see each other and kept us up to date

with what was happening. They chatted with Kayden and had a real personal care touch. Words will never show our true gratitude.” Kayden and Ryan have since met their pilots and medics so they could say thanks. “Kayden had a pin removed in late September, leaving him with just a couple of tiny scars. He has made great progress with his rehab and wants to be back free diving over summer and playing rugby next season. “I am very grateful how well we were cared for and the ultimate outcome for Kayden.” To support the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service go to nest.org.nz. ¢
