“It is with some sadness I have cancelled Settlers Day, which was set for Saturday, October 3 this year, another casualty of Covid-19,” said museum general manager and curator, Dr Tracey Wedge. “Even at level one, the challenges of large crowds inside the building complex make the day untenable. There are plans though, to still recognise the day. We have extensive photo records and video material with which we are aiming to have a virtual ‘Settlers Day’ online to reflect on the years we have been able to celebrate with our community,” Dr We d g e said. Settlers Day has been notable for ‘live’ action with volunteers undertaking pioneer activities. She added that on a brighter note, the museum trust board has welcomed high profile businessman and current KiwiRail board chair, Brian Corban to its ranks, at a time when preparations are underway for major infrastructure projects. These will utilise a $3 million Provincial Growth Fund grant and includes creating a centre of excellence

to recognise the significance of the kauri to New Zealand. Mr Corbyn has been a Kaipara resident for 43 years with a home at Pahi. He adds an impressive CNZM, QSO, MA (Hons), LLB Dist FIOD FNZIM to his business card and is a professional company chairman and director, businessman and community leader. Minister accused of conservation clash

Opponents of the plan to create a mega-landfill in the Dome Valley to take Auckland rubbish say they are pleased that Green Party member and Minister of Conservation Eugenie Sage has granted $8.5 million dollars to safeguard kiwi. The funding will go towards a 54,000acre predator-free zone between the Kaipara Harbour and the Pacific coast to provide a ‘land bridge’ to safeguard kiwi and grow their numbers. But the Fight the Tip movement, supported by Ngati Whatua, have described as “hypocritical” that the minister originally opened the way towards the huge rubbish dump project by granting resource consent under the Overseas Investment Act for Chineseowned Waste Management Ltd in Auckland to buy up 1,020 hectares of land for the dump in Dome Valley. They say the dump is in a catchment area of the Hoteo River, and any breach of the tip could be disastrous by polluting Kaipara Harbour and its precious marine nurseries. Petitions to the government have been backed up by a protest hikoi to Auckland. Consent hearings for the tip will begin in November. Wellsford resident J Boyd has written to the Lifestyler, saying: “As someone who already runs a trapline in the area, how does having a megadump in the middle of the proposed kiwi corridor work? Perhaps you could ask Eugenie Sage as she ignored her own department’s advice and signed off on the deal allowing the proposed Dome

Valley dump to get off the ground.” Mr Boyd’s comment was referred to Minister Sage, who replies: “Neither I nor Associate Finance Minister David Clark gave Waste Management Ltd consent to build a landfill. The decision is made by Auckland Council under the Resource Management Act. The application has been publicly notified [for] submissions. “My and Minister Clark’s role was simply to consider the company’s application to buy land; The primary factor s relate to whether the application creates a substantial and identifiable benefit for New Zealand. If it does, then consent to the land purchase has to be granted. “Ministers concluded that the application met the tests in the Act because of the 50 to 100 jobs expected to be created during the twoyear construction period and the need for a landfill to the north of Auckland as Redvale reached capacity. “Issues around significant indigenous vegetation and habitat, land use and water quality and whether the 1,020ha area of the site can provide an adequate buffer around the landfill should [be heard at hearings]. “As part of that process [DOC] made a submission on the conservation

September 25 2020 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

A stinger of a tale u by Liz Clark

Some excitement occurred recently when a pod of orcas or killer whales were spotted by residents frolicking the Mangawhai Harbour.

p The New Zealand Coastal orca is the most common type seen around harbours and estuaries

There was a reason why the marine mammals were coming into the inner harbour. It wasn’t to play and frolic nor give boaties a friendly greeting. The reason was far more purposeful than that, and that was to hunt. Mangawhai in te reo Maori translates to ‘stream of the stingray’; for the orca the stingray and its relatives the skate and shark are prey. According to marine biologist, Dr Ingred Visser, orca will come into estuarine environments like Mangawhai to hunt for the various species of rays that sit under the mud. The orcas use their heads to dig into the mud, coming up for air often covered in it. Rays if disturbed, will attempt to move into shallower water to escape the large predators. However, the orcas have learned to flip the creatures upside down, rendering them immobilised before delivering the final blow. Visser notes hunting stingrays for orca isn’t without its risks. Some have ended up dying from allergic reactions to a stingray’s poisonous barb wedged in the throat. Others have been beached from coming in too far into the shallows pursuing rays and sometimes have needed human assistance to return to deeper water. Some of the cooperative hunting techniques used include one orca picking up a stingray by the tail,

while a second bites the head. Being sociable mammals, hunting behaviour and methods are passed on from one generation to the next through learning from older pod members. Marine scientists have identified more than 22 ecotypes of orca globally. Ecotype refers to a distinct population of a species. Ecotypes differ in body shape, size as well as behaviour, including social structure and hunting behaviour. The marine mammals being seen coming into harbours are New Zealand Coastal orca and are unique to our coastal waters. Long-term studies have identified three distinct subpopulations around New Zealand. They are also some of the few populations that enter harbours and estuarine areas to hunt. With less than 200 individuals, the coastal orcas are classified as nationally critical. Coastal orcas have been known to hunt seven species of shark, four species of rays, various fin-fish, birds and octopus. They average an intake of 50–130kg of food each day. The Orca Research Trust has recently published an online guide to individual orca identified by their scientists from various observational studies. The guide can be found on the trust’s website orcaresearch.org/index. php/2020-orca-id-guide. ¢

Dune protectors work with nature

Members of the Baylys Beach Society have taken up spades in association with the Northland Regional Council to protect their local sand dune biota from erosion.

of years to thrive in the salty, windy marine climate of our beaches. It’s well-known to surfers, beachcombers and anglers as the ‘kiwi tumbleweed’. That’s because the female seed heads of the plant detach from their stalks and blow along the shoreline, often gathering in eddies and clumps to lay down new seed. The hardy, tangled roots of the kowhangatara help bind sand dunes together, leading to less erosion and dune movement, both of which threaten to block beach access ways and paths, or contribute to more land being swallowed up by the sea. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, foredune plants such as this, and the common pingao grass with its golden leaves and rope-like tendrils, are easily crushed and disturbed by human and animal interaction. west coast of the Kaipara, it often comes down to community initiatives like this one to lead the way. While kowhangatara is hardy and resistant as an adult plant, it has a high mortality rate as a seedling, meaning that planting and care are essential. Cheryl and the other BBS volunteers invite those using the walkways and paths of Baylys Beach to ‘adopt a plant’, and give it a little fresh water

from their canteen or water bottle when they’re out enjoying the seaside. It will augment rain as we come into the hotter days of summer, and help the tough, dune-protecting plants to grow up healthy. It’s a more holistic, natural and less visually intrusive measure than deploying rocks, concrete and steel to help hold back the tide during storms. ¢

p Snapdragons are an ideal flowering plant for a bee-friendly garden

p Snapdragons with their brilliant colours and wonderful scent can’t be ignored for picking

Here there be dragons u by Liz Clark

Not the fire-breathing kind; however, the snapdragon can add a lot of fiery colour to your garden.

p Snapdragons should be clipped to encourage branching

Antirrhinum majus or snapdragon, as it is more commonly known, was named for its resemblance to the face of the mythological dragon that opens and closes its mouth when it’s squeezed. Associated with the country cottage garden, snapdragons are used as bedding plants. However, they can also be grown in decorative pots and containers, as well as for floral decoration in the home. Snapdragons come in dwarf, intermediate and tall-flowering forms ranging from 15cm to almost one metre in height. While the plant is available in most colours, blue is the exception. These plants can be used to coordinate with other flowering plants to enhance and bring colour brilliance to any garden setting. Seeds can be planted now, in time for earlier blooming. Planting can be ongoing from spring until autumn. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and sow following the seed supplier’s instructions. Snapdragons are frost hardy; early planting won’t harm their growth. Water young plants daily to keep the soil moisture constant. Once established, snapdragons need to be kept well-watered during the drier summer months. An application of mulch will help to retain soil moisture and prevent the roots from drying out.

Avoid overhead watering, always water at the base of the crown to prevent fungal diseases from occurring. To encourage branching, clip the top stem, and any long side shoots to promote better flowering and a more attractive form. Once the flowers have faded during summer, cut back onethird of the plant. It will encourage the plant to form new growth and produce a new flourish of blooms. Deadheading flowers will help to ensure continuous blooms. Looking at the many cultivars can be daunting. What to choose? Go with your favourite colours or even create a virtual living painting with different shades. For lovers of white shades take a look at Snowflake. A tall-growing plant with spectacular brilliant-white flowers growing to 90cm. A perfect candidate for the cutting garden if you’re doing floral bouquets. Next, check out Brazilian Carnival, a mixed-range of bicoloured snapdragons, available as seed, ranging from brilliant pinks and creams to deep chocolate and red shades. These make an excellent space filler in the garden or plant in containers and create your own Mardi Gras in living colour. One eyecatcher you shouldn’t do without, and that is Lucky Lips. A white bicolour with lipstick-pink accents; it’s one cultivar not to be missed. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER September 25 2020

New boost of life at 150 u by Andy Bryenton

This Sunday, Te Kopuru residents will gather for a free performance with a difference at the town’s Coronation Hall. In association with Community Think and the Kaipara District Council, this event will frame the history of Te Kopuru in a series of stories, then open up the floor to discussion of the future as the town nears 150 years old. Before there was Dargaville, there were Te Kopuru and Aratapu, founded as kauri milling and boatbuilding towns on the upper reaches of the Northern Wairoa River accessible to tall ships. In late 1870, exactly 150 years ago, one such ship delivered the tools and boilers for a steam-powered lumber mill to the riverside at Te Kopuru. By early 1871 that mill was up and running, and a town was born. Now, with 150th celebrations looming, Community Think’s Cissy Rock is enthusiastic about community-derived plans to revitalise the town, all part of the Tautoko Te Kopuru Community Plan. It’s been called ‘civic planning from the grass roots up, instead of the board room down’. “Our project is all about capturing all the ideas people have for Te Kopuru. Some have been around for a while, and some are brand new,” said Cissy. Some have been enacted already, such as improvements to the town’s park and domain with the addition of a street basketball half-court and children’s play equipment. Other Te Kopuru residents have pitched in with their own ideas about how to revitalise the town; there’s an active community

p Even the children of Te Kopuru School have been active in ongoing town beautification plans, submitting designs for new and improved park equipment

development group (the TKCDG) also working toward the 150th. Sunday’s presentation, all improv, will tell some of the early stories from 150 years ago, but link through to fresh ideas for things like community orchards, te reo classes, mural painting, street beautification, historic

plaques, and of course the best utilisation of a new multi-million dollar stopbank recently allocated by the Provincial Growth Fund. Local advocates of cycling ecotourism note that with a wharf at Pouto, a sealed road down the peninsula, a new stopbank and a wharf in Dargaville,

cyclists will be attracted to the old historic town. “We’re looking forward to a positive year for the sesquicentennial,” says TKCDG member Kurt Richards. “The development group and the town, in general, have a lot of great ideas to make this a special occasion.” ¢

p Kiri Taylor is passionate about creating good food and believes in using the freshest local ingredients she can source for every recipe

A food lover’s dream u by Ann van Engelen

Kiri Taylor is passionate about creating beautiful food and is on a new adventure on the family farm where she recently established her small home-based catering company. “I love experimenting with both new and old flavours to create beautiful food with simple, wholesome and local ingredients,” says Kiri. Kiri grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in California and now lives in Te Kopuru. “My mum was born in Wellington. One day my grandparents decided to go for a holiday to Disneyland in the US, they never returned to live here. During my childhood, we travelled back to New Zealand to visit family and some were dairy farmers. As I got older, I always joked I was going to marry a dairy farmer. I loved the lifestyle. “I lived half an hour south of the city of San Francisco. I decided to go to the University of Auckland to get in touch with my Kiwi roots. Before long, I knew this was home. I studied sociology, criminology and early childhood

education and met my husband Matthew at the university hostel we both lived in, he was studying business. “I didn’t even know Matthew was a dairy farmer when we started dating. He is Te Kopuru born, mostly Dargaville bred. When he finished his degree in 2014 we got married and decided to return to work on his family farm. “I was definitely a city girl and not used to farm life. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and it was a huge transition. When we moved here I was a relief teacher at Dargaville Kindergarten and loved it. “I have always been passionate about food. My mum calls me a modern-day pioneer woman. I can’t just

buy a loaf of bread at the supermarket. I have to go home and figure out how it is made. To me, it is like reading the book before seeing the movie. “I wanted to start my own food business but wasn’t sure how to execute the idea. A friend became a yoga instructor and asked me to cater for a retreat she held. It was like divine intervention and encompassed everything I wanted, so I began my adventure and called it Feed & Flour. “I can put nice cheese boards together and make dainty desserts. Catering gives me something that keeps my personality alive as I like to be busy. I have been doing small events for friends and family for just over two months now and can’t imagine doing

I have always been passionate about food

p Food is love to Kiri, and she attributes her positive attitude, creativity and passion for cooking and baking to her mother and grandmother

Te Kopuru is an awesome place and the locals have helped me learn a lot about the Maori culture

anything else. It has been so exciting collaborating with others to help their foodie ideas become a reality. One example includes a Mexican night for a friend’s birthday. We did a taco bar with pulled beef, handmade tortillas and an assortment of toppings. People really love my cakes too. “I create artisanal menus as well as canapés, grazing tables, platters and bagel or taco bars. Sustainability is important to me. I enjoy creating seasonally focussed food and try to use local Kaipara fruit and vegetables. “I classify myself as a dropoff caterer and work with people’s budgets. I am proud to have my home kitchen council registered. I am in the beginning stages of forming deeper relationships with the Te Kopuru community — including getting to know my local marae, Ripia. It is exciting to

have this budding connection at the foundation of my career change. “Tikanga Maori is very special to me and I believe it is very important to share our knowledge with our tamariki. A friend recently introduced me to the Maramataka, the Maori lunar calendar, and I am finding it fascinating how you can base the food you create off the calendar. “Te Kopuru is an awesome place and the locals have helped me learn a lot about the Maori culture. I appreciate forming these relationships through my new journey. “Good food makes people happy and brings people together. My love of food has given me opportunities I never realised I could have. “Not every recipe goes to plan and I love the mistakes as much as the success.

“The more you experiment the better you get. My family are the best taste testers and that is fun too. Matthew is my biggest fan and I’m so appreciative of the support he has given to help make this dream a reality. “Our two children, Quinn and Ezra, taste all my new recipes and they say if something doesn’t work for them. Ezra’s favourite thing is cake, any kind, and Quinn is a meat girl. She loves a good rolled roast — just like her dad. “In San Francisco food was so different. It was any cuisine, any time. I get excited about crisp fresh flavours and love bright and bold creations, they are my connection to my first home. “Fine-tuning recipes is a bit of an obsession and I love learning new things. One day, I would love to run a cafe with great food where people

know they are loved and appreciated. “My nana instilled in me the importance of gratitude. With it, the rest will come. “My mum is the most creative person I know and has always been amazing in the kitchen. “That helped my foundation with food. Passion was also a big thing with my mum. “I was often queried about what I was passionate about. I did not quite get why it was so important when I was younger, but I do now. “Food to me is my awhi, it is my gift that I want to share with the world. I appreciate every person I meet and it is humbling to cook for people that are interested in what I do. “I am grateful for all of the support I have received and I look forward to what is to come.” ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER September 25 2020

p The natural environment of the east coast provides great inspiration for many of the works in Spring has Sprung

The ‘Originals’ time to shine u by Andy Bryenton

This week sees the opening of Spring has Sprung, an eclectic showcase from a group of artists known as the Originals; a collaborative collection of some of the Mangawhai Artists’ 180 members. The Originals Art Group is led by Jean Foster and Linda Fountain and exists to provide a collaborative, friendly and nurturing environment for artists of all levels of skill and ability. Working together shares inspiration and provides feedback from artistic peers. Plus there’s the bonus of working in a large, bright and airy space rather than trying to repurpose part of one’s home into a studio. It will be the third large exhibition for the Mangawhai Artists since lockdown; an enormous achievement in such a short space of time. “They encourage absolute beginners through to very experienced artists,” says Mangawhai Artists spokesperson Christine Basham. “It’s a group for all ages, though one gentleman suggested they could do with a few more men to balance the numbers! “There is a small weekly fee to cover the hall costs and special

events, and the participants bring their own materials. “The atmosphere is congenial and fun, and the environment is friendly, supportive and nurturing. “There is plenty of advice and help available, but also there is space to work individually.” Spring has provided a perfect opportunity for members of the Originals Art Group to share a creative theme. Their works for the Spring has Sprung exhibition are subsequently full of vibrancy and life to reflect the spirit of the season. Equally lively is the enthusiasm shown by group members to open their collection to the public. A special opening night was held on September 24 at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery on Moir Street, followed by a run through until October 7, during which time the entire exhibition is free to view. ¢

p Having space to work collaboratively alongside other members of the ‘Originals’ provides the confidence to experiment artistically

p The new exhibition is bursting with colour, as befits the season of new life and growth; it’s open free to the public from today in Mangawhai

WOWZA - Vendor has dropped price!

Vendors have downsized and ready to move!

This home offers space galore with family living in mind. The large 230sqm 5 bedroom home is the house that keeps on giving. The kitchen is super generous in size and has an open floor plan with dining. Gas hot water and gas cooking, oven being electric. Tucked just around the corner is the living area, another fantastic space. All bedrooms are double sized with two of them having their own en suites, one with a spa bath, the main bathroom as well makes this family home so workable. The deck overlooks a nice big section of 1,114 sqm and the family pool, with a little pool shed for changing in. Underneath we have the very large garage with internal access to the home and boasts an awesome work bench for the men to have fun tinkering on their projects. With a little bit of work this home can be amazing! Located in the lovely Maungaturoto, within walking distance to shops and fantastic schools.

Imagine a beautiful rolling landscape with a close up view of the mountain to one side and river with green pastures on the other. Divided into 21 paddocks this small 26.4 ha farm has serviced the fattening of 75 - 90 odd heifers through the years. Fertiliser has been applied every year and the races and fences are in fantastic condition. Water source is an endless supply that is gravity fed to every trough. No supplement feeding has ever been needed, with hay being able to be produced from the farm itself. This is the perfect choice for a retired farmer, It is small enough for easy management but big enough to produce an income. The perfect balance. The family home has three well appointed bedrooms. Master bedroom boasts it’s own en suite and walk in robe. Kitchen is spacious with dining combined and the lounge can be separated off the dining as well by double doors. A conservatory room will suit to have a nice cuppa, enjoy the views and read a book.
