“The trade agreement will deliver major gains to the New Zealand sheep and beef sector, despite the United State’s withdrawal last year,” said Sam McIvor B+LNZ chief executive. “Japan is New Zealand’s fifth largest market for red meat and co-products, with exports of more than $302 million exports last year. Japan is the market in which the sheep and beef sector faces its single highest tariff burden. “Last year the sector faced tariffs of $73 million on its $302 million exports, an average tariff of 24 per cent — and money that would have trickled down to all New Zealand households.“ Mr McIvor said the TPP11 had become even more important in recent weeks. “On August 1, Japan increased its tariffs on frozen beef from 38.5 per cent to 50 per cent under a WTO safeguard, which will apply until March next year. “Australia, one of our largest competitors in the market is not affected by the safeguard because it has an existing bilateral trade agreement with Japan. Australian frozen beef only faces a tariff of 27.2 per cent, giving it a massive 22.8 per cent advantage. This is already having a major impact on our exports, which were worth $79 million last year.” MIA Ceo Tim Ritchie said Australia is responsible for some 50 per cent of Japan’s beef imports which have contributed to the trigger of the safeguard on frozen beef. “There is a distinct possibility that a similar WTO safeguard may be triggered on chilled beef exports into Japan in the next few months which would further disadvantage the sector. “Japan is New Zealand’s largest chilled beef market worth $63 million

last year. Japan also concluded FTA negotiations with the European Union earlier this year, and agreed to give the EU similar outcomes on beef as in TPP. The Government’s negotiating mandate for TPP11 will level the playing field and will ensure our exporters remain competitive in overseas markets. “TPP would also deliver important gains in other markets such as Mexico and Canada where our sheep and beef exports face tariffs ranging from 10 to 60 per cent,” said Mr Ritchie. Both Mr McIvor and Mr Ritchie say: “Given the absolute importance of this initiative for our sector, we trust the leadership New Zealand has taken continues post the election.”

Commit to clean rivers Farmers are encouraged to make a stand and be committed to help make New Zealand’s rivers healthy again for our children, grandchildren and future generations. “This is a clear message from New Zealand’s farming leaders that we want our rivers to be in a better state than they are now, and agriculture needs to help get them there,” says DairyNZ chair Michael Spaans. “I have joined my fellow leaders to stand up and say that I want my grandchildren, and one day my greatgrandchildren to be able to swim in the same rivers that I did growing up. “I don’t know one farmer who doesn’t care deeply about their land, and who doesn’t want to leave it in a better state than they came to it.” The pledge comes from the Farming Leaders Group, an informal group of New Zealand pastoral farming leaders established in May this year to work on issues of importance to the sector. “Dairy has been on this journey for many years and I’m proud of what our farmers have achieved so far. More work is required and we need to keep going forward,” says DairyNZ chief executive, Dr Tim Mackle. “At the launch of the third year of results of the Sustainable Dairy

Water Accord in May, the dairy sector celebrated that 97 per cent of dairy waterways are excluded from dairy cattle. Dairy waterways are planted with millions of native trees to create strong riparian margins to ‘sop up’ nutrients. “As of June last year, almost 27,000km of dairy waterways had been fenced, and more than 99.4 per cent of 44,386 regular stock crossing points on dairy farms now have bridges or culverts. “Our farmers have personally invested over $1 billion to protect their waterways by planting and fencing their riparian margins. “DairyNZ has spent more than $18.5 million on research and development and a further $10.6 million on environmental work last year. “Even with this investment and a strong commitment to nutrient and effluent management, we are still not where we need to be. “Today is about saying we are all committed to playing our part to help create a better New Zealand for everyone.”

ryan’s grandfather Bill had originally acquired the farm as a ballot block and called it Nirvana. Graham changed the stud prefix to Shalom in 1984 and in 1999 Bryan purchased the herd and has continued to add to the strong genetic pool. He and his wife Nicki later renamed the property Seven Hills. “We are the third generation on the family farm and my office was my bedroom as a child,” said Bryan. “My mother said I was never happy unless I had a stick in my hand and taking over from my father was always the plan. Our son is into big machinery and roads so we are not sure what will

happen with succession of the property in the future. “My dad and his brother were in partnership and then the property was divided and now I farm next door to my cousin Geoffrey as separate identities.” Seven Hills is 1,400ha in total with 1,100ha effective pasture and 300ha of manuka and this area has bee hives in place. “I wanted to have a new start and decided the name had been changed once and could be again. All the name changes coincidently happened to be in 27 year intervals. The name Nirvana came from the community woolshed where my grandfather

Timber exports worth more than meat again – after 136 years. Back in our colonial times, native timber exports were important. But, in the 1880s, with fewer trees and more farmland, meat exports went ahead.

originally took the ballot block. “I was away overseas for a time and when I returned I purchased the block. It happened to be originally called Seven Hills so I decided to return it to its original name. “The original woolshed is still here and it still has my aunt’s name stencilled on the door. The shearers over the years wrote their names on the building so I guess as a little girl she decided to as well. There are 60-70 years worth of names written on the walls. It is quite nostalgic.” “The challenge and knowledge obtained from combining these herds along with our original Waigroup herd has proven to be exciting and stimulating. Now we are moving into the phase of combining carcase genetics with those strong female lines.” Bryan and Nicki also run 4,000 romney ewes and breed their own rams with a focus on worm resistance and tolerance as well as facial eczema resistance. “My question to any beef farmer would be — did the last bull you buy have the carcass genetics to produce steers that will grade into the ‘premium brand’ programmes? “Currently the premium for a 300kg carcass weight steer to grade into the programmes is a $150 premium. “If you are not looking at accomplishing that you would have to ask questions because it is actually the only new money that comes into our farming system. “The only money that comes into our farms is from consumers, so we need to produce a product that they will

At this stage and in the foreseeable short term future, supply and demand increase in tandem. “Through the GFC the demand for premium branded beef products went up and so did the price, whereas commodity beef went down, so if you are going to get into beef you may as well invest in

They were brilliant to learn from and certainly helped us get to where we are today. “To make our cheese we had to convert a building to food grade standard and source the equipment on a limited budget.” In November 2015 the Goodmans registered ‘The Drunken

Nanny’ brand. “The name came about when I was at lunch with a friend at her vineyard and it was a drought. She suggested we give the goats their pressed grape skins for feed. All I could visualise was drunken goats, and that is where the name was established.” Yes they did give the goats grape skins, but no said Amanda, they did not get drunk. “We launched our brand at the Martinborough wine merchants and the community were very supportive. From there the business was born which was really exciting. “We predominantly make fresh goat cheese, and this season we are launching lemony lush. This is made with local lemon olive oil. We have frisky feta, black tie, and our limited release specialty cheeses such as cheeky camembert, and savvy washed rind. “Goat cheese is good for those who cannot tolerate cow’s milk due to lactose intolerance, and it is lower in fat. “To have awesome cheese starts with what the goats have been fed. It is reflected in the milk and that is the foundation of our business.” The couple use Agrisea concentrates on the grazing and feed production paddocks on the farm. “We ensure the goats are relaxed and have wholesome, natural, fresh food available at all times. We are amazed at how the Agrisea products

have enhanced our soil health and grass productivity. The worm activity is exciting to see. “Milking is carried out every morning, and the milk goes direct to the cheese room through cooling plates and is kept at the correct temperature. “Milking once a day works in with the sheep and beef side of the farm as well as the children. Once milked they head back out to graze and at night they get their baleage and are put to bed in the shed. “Goats are very susceptible to different diseases and parasites are a major problem. Every day we check they are ok. “If you miss one day, they can go down very quickly with illness. When they are pregnant and milking they need to have supplementary feed. It is not advisable to graze them with sheep because of the parasite cross contamination but they can co-graze with cattle as both animals enjoy eating different things. “We have had to work extra hard and do extra research being the only people in the Wairarapa with dairy goats. “We had two of the worst droughts recently and with the supplementary feed the herd coped well. They don’t love wet weather, and their feet don’t like being in the mud, so having the shed is crucial for them. “It has been said that often great grape growing regions are good for

producing great goat cheese. “We have worked with local wineries and are using local olive oil with our delicacies to combine local products together. The couple entered the 2016 NZ Cheese Awards and received three silver and a bronze award. At the 2017 cheese awards they also gained three silvers and a bronze. “We are very proud of

our accomplishments and were thrilled recently when Simon Gault selected our products for the menu at his new restaurant — Giraffe,” says Amanda. “At no point do we want to sacrifice quality for the way we farm our animals — they are our first priority. We do things in a sustainable manner for the animals, the environment, and for us.”

years. As a company and an industry, we are making some real advances and it is very exciting to be a part of that. “I am a third generation poultry farmer and as a little girl who absolutely adored her old man, I spent as much time out on the farm as I could with him. Apart from some time spent travelling I have pretty much always been involved in the industry in one way or another.” Nina says the stock team often talk about the hens that follow them around the house when they are doing their checks. order and it is very interesting watching them interact. “The hens all have their own personalities and there are always one or two characters that no matter how many times you put them back over the fence with their flock, the next day they are out again.” Inside the houses the hens always have access to fresh feed and water. “We work with nutritionists to provide a balanced diet to meet the hens’ nutritional requirements. Our feed is made here in the South Island by our sister company, MainFeeds.” These mixes are a blend of locally grown wheat and barley, plant proteins

The ideal weather for a hen out on the range is an overcast misty day. A lot of people presume that the hens would prefer a clear sunny day but they are always fearful of attack from above so feel a lot more comfortable under clouds. The social birds interact with each other and all have their own unique personalities so the hens arrive at our laying farms in the best condition.” The hens are set up for laying and prepared for their new environment at the laying farm. “When consumers buy Woodland eggs they can be 100 per cent sure they are authentic free range. Every egg will be stamped and have the Woodland tree symbol and a code — this can be used on Woodland’s website to show where each egg was laid,” says Michael Guthrie, managing director of Mainland Poultry Limited. “As New Zealand’s leading producer of free range eggs, we were naturally very concerned about recent allegations

that a small number of cage eggs may have been marketed as being free range. “This compelled us to fast-track our plans to guarantee the provenance of our eggs by providing complete traceability from the farm to the consumer’s kitchen. “At all the farms, the eggs are collected daily to ensure freshness. We stamp each egg at the barn where we collect them, so there can be no question that it is, in fact, a genuine Woodland free range egg.” The technology was developed in the Netherlands by Nuovo. It uses safe food grade ink, so the egg is completely unaffected by the stamping process.

Maurik Wouters, owner of Nuovo says egg stamping for traceability is already regulation in the EU as part of the European standard and has been in effect since 2012. Woodland is the first brand to implement this in New Zealand and they now operate to the world standard for traceability. “It is a matter of principle for us to give our customers 100 per cent confidence that our eggs are genuinely free range,” Michael says. “The demand for free range eggs is growing strongly, and as the recent outcry has shown, consumers want to be assured that they get the genuine product.”

Technology cares for the land Pay attention!

by Paul Campbell

Technology in the 21st century would no doubt baffle the farmers who broke in the Wairarapa farms of last century but today it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry.

around road works

The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs have advanced out of sight combining real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone . GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. production. But it is not only ground or aerial spreading that has taken a huge leap forward. All other aspects of farming have benefited, with field-placed sensors in stock paddocks, croplands and orchards sending real time data to phones, i-pads and computers. Farmers are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields. The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to the large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques. Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected.

Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting natural resources for future use. Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient. The accuracy of GPS creates farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations and distances between points of interest. GPS allows farmers to accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or just monitor conditions.

Sheltering your block Planning of the layout of your garden and giving your property a personal touch is all part of the excitement when you purchase a lifestyle block or small property. It is advisable to take time to plan the best locations for your plantings and ensure what you choose is well suited to the land and climate you live in. There are trees, shrubs and plants available to suit every situation. It is selecting the incorrect plants that is one of the biggest reasons for failure. Talk to your local gardening store or landscaper for ideas, look through magazines and ask others living in the area what they find grows best. Depending on rainfall and your soil type, the suggested time for planting is around May through to September. If starting from scratch ensure you allow enough space for lawns, large trees and perhaps a pond if you enjoy water lilies. Shelter is an important consideration. Having a good windbreak will give protection for yourself and your animals. Trees can be grown in a single row, clusters or multiple rows. They can include evergreen, deciduous, mixed species or single such as Poplars, Alders and Pine. Often planting large trees provides good amounts of shade.

Plan the areas that are best to place shelter and shade for your animals. If there is wetland, native riparian plantings can also attract native birds. Shelter belts offer many beneficial attributes to any rural property. They screen livestock from cold, wet and windy weather. In summer they provide shade for stock of all types, reducing heat stress. They also reduce moisture loss in grass and crops from drying winds. Plantings are also useful for hill stabilisation and preventing slips. Planting rows or clusters of trees is ideal for creating privacy or blocking out unwanted views such as buildings, neighbouring houses or roads. Ensure your fencing is in place before introducing animals to your block. Horses and cattle have long reaches, so it is best to fence 1.5m to 2m from your new plantings. Goats and sheep are good at reaching underneath a fence as well to get to the seedlings and vegetables which may be in their reach. A common mistake made in rural landscaping includes fencing driveways

Septic camouflage is key

Country living invariably means a septic tank for waste disposal and while the connotation maybe less than salubrious, there’s no reason for it. Landscaping near and around septic systems is the best camouflage, as well as an enhancement. Earthworks are designed to maximise the absorption capacity of existing soil, and location, size, shape, construction procedures and maintenance all affect how well the completed septic system will function. Plants play a huge role and as a result careful selection will ‘beautify’ a mundane function while adding to its

efficiency. Plants enhance the system by removing moisture and nutrients from the soil and providing cover to prevent erosion. Careful planning helps to provide a landscape with lower maintenance costs, greater environmental benefits, and much higher aesthetic value. The earlier in the process that you become

the system into the overall landscape is still the way to go. A permanent vegetation cover is required to minimise topsoil loss. Establish a cover as soon as possible to limit erosion. Always wear gloves when working over septic systems to minimise your contact with soil. Use plants that do not like water or wet soils near the septic system. This will prevent their root systems from interfering with the septic system. The larger the plant, the more extensive (not necessarily deeper) the root system. WE STOCK A WIDE RANGE OF

involved in expressing your preferences, the more options you will have. For instance, before the house is designed or built, potential septic locations, along with soil borings and percolation tests can give some control over the placement and final outcome. If a property is large enough the septic system can possibly be extended out of mind, with a drip field heavily disguised with trees and shrubs. Bear in mind the tree root profiles to avoid invasion of the field in years to come. On a smaller property blending

HOME & LANDSCAPING WITH SEPTIC FOCUS

The security of your septic

Whether you are building your dream home on your newly purchased lifestyle block or moving into an older existing build, many homes in rural areas are not able to connect to a town sewage system. These properties have their own on-site disposal systems and the most common form is a septic tank. Installing a new septic and wastewater system on your rural land can be a daunting experience. Check the local authority compliance issues that need to be met and if there are any restrictions of the land to take into account. There is a large range of systems available and it is good to ask others in the area of their recommendations, or sit with suppliers and review the options for your needs. Check that the company you choose obtain council approval and can help with every aspect of your project, such as guidance in the earliest planning and development stages with a free site visit, through to design and installation to final completion and after sales support. Does the system work with low noise and odour, and will it cope with shortterm changes to water volumes. Wastewater, from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom, discharges into a septic tank buried on the property. Modern septic systems generally have pumps with pressurised disposal and multiple chambers and filters. If you have an

older septic tank it is important to never enter the septic tank yourself, and never leave the lid open as it will contain toxic gases that could kill you if you breathe them in. A poorly maintained septic tank will become a serious health hazard and spread disease, and can contaminate water sources. Tanks need regular maintenance, and it is best to seek professional help to do this. Keep a maintenance record and a map of its exact location. Your local council may be able to provide you with some of these details if you do not have them. Newer systems often include a

maintenance contract in their price and it is worth considering buying a maintenance contract for older systems. Tanks generally need pumping by a professional every three to five years to remove sludge and sediment and it is important to inspect tanks regularly. Ultimately, a septic system is one of the most important parts of your household needs and ensuring you have a reliable system will give you and your family peace of mind with no unnecessary disruptions to your daily life.

Green feed on demand “The capability of producing in excess of 100 tonnes of fresh green feed a year from an area less than the size of a 20’ shipping container is a game changer when it comes to intensification of livestock feed production.” David Petterson of Fodder NZ, says: “Whether you are feeding calves, cattle, sheep, deer, goats, pigs , horses or any number of exotic species, the ability to provide fresh nutritious green feed each and every day is a massive leap forward in captive cropping.” The Fodder NZ system centres on the sprouting of barley under computerised climatically controlled growing conditions. While the systems are built around a modular framework, Fodder NZ can adapt the layout to meet the production requirements of the end user, working with farmers to optimise space and production.

With a fodder shed, droughts or floods no longer define the limitations of the farm management plan. With a Fodder NZ growing facility these events are met with a fresh, sustainable daily available feed supply. The growing shed in particular presents the opportunity to grow the feed platform without increasing the physical size of the farm. While the transportable growing rooms offered by Fodder NZ can produce green feed ranging from 44 tonnes to 182 tonnes a year, Petterson says the transportable rooms were just the beginning of the production potential of Fodder NZ’s growing facilities.

Sprouted fodder at 5 days

Large scale production gains are made in the one tonne-a-day-plus growing sheds. One of the real benefits of the Fodder NZ system is that existing farm sheds can be retro fitted to grow fodder, eliminating the need to buy or build a

purpose-built shed. While configurations of sheds can vary, as a guide, a shed 11m x 7m could produce around 360 tonnes of green feed a year. For further information visit the company’s website www.fodder.nz or call David Petterson on 0800 16 32 64.

Therapy for osteoarthritis Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints. They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin. The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes. These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain. Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss. Thirdly high levels of CS appear

to be anabolic — it appears to be able to generate new cartilage. The mechanisms here seems to be that CS stimulates chondrocyte cells to increase production of collagen and other compounds needed to make new cartilage. By way of example I have been helping someone with OA in her knees, back and hands. She had been using a joint supplement heavily weighted towards glucosamine rather than chondroitin. We added a supplement with high levels of CS with noticeable improvements on this combination with less pain and more mobility. I am sure the extra curcumin and Omega 3 all helped with these improvements. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Golden Years The retiring years Retirement age should be a time that we can finally have the time and freedom to do the things we have always wanted to do such as travel, go to cooking classes or take up new hobbies. For some, life after we stop working can also mean having to live on less income than before, but going into retirement doesn’t mean we have to stop earning extra income if necessary. From the age of 65 most New Zealand residents receive NZ Super every fortnight and income can also come from savings, paid work or business activity. Depending on our personal situation we might also qualify for extra help from the government for health, medical and housing costs or other assistance — for example, if we face an emergency situation, or if we need help with essential costs. To discuss any financial issues you or someone you know may be having, contact the local Senior Services centre, usually located at Work and

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

Income or visit the Ministry of Social Development website. A Community Services Card can help with the cost of healthcare. If we qualify, we’ll pay less on some health services and prescriptions. There are also ways to actually save money in retirement including using the SuperGold Card. This is a discounts and concessions card available free to all New Zealanders who are aged 65 years or over, and using it regularly can help save money on day-to-day expenses such as petrol at certain gas stations. For more information contact the SuperGold Card Centre on 0800 254 565. Later in retirement, we may have to rethink where we want to live. One option is to move to a retirement village — of course there are other choices. We

MIND YOuR sPEED AROuND sCHOOL BusEs

could choose to stay in the home we are in or downsize to a smaller home and move closer to necessary facilities. Moving into a retirement village is different. The financial arrangements are more complex and villages vary in their accommodation and facilities, services, support and care, legal and financial structures, philosophy and management. A decision to move into a village is important as it has long-term

personal and financial consequences. If considering residential care, the first stage is to have a needs assessment that will indicate whether you may be eligible for a Residential Care Subsidy. If you qualify, the subsidy and most of your NZ Super will be used to pay for care, leaving just a small amount of personal money to spend. For more information on retirement options contact Senior Services on 0800 552 002.

A Blue Do for cancer care It’s Blue September again and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

This year it is all about having a ‘Blue Do’ so get organised with some mates, colleagues and family, and arrange an event to spread the message and raise some funds to support the foundation. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do on the website. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue barbecue or a blueberry bake off? Or organise a Blue Friday like many workplaces organise. It really gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food, and focusses on awareness of prostate cancer. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his dad was diagnosed

with the disease, and how hard it was to talk about it and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them the outcome was good. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, catching the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Safe and simple liquid storage Farmers, is your dairy farm effluent under control or is it controlling you? Sleep well at night knowing that Flexi Tanks NZ now offer an affordable, simple and safe, solution to your liquid storage needs.

There has been a lot of talk about our bladder tanks and we find many farmers are all abuzz and waiting to see just what the neighbour down the road is installing as they have heard it’s ‘one of those Flexi Tank/bladder thingeys’. So what are they all about? Flexi Tanks are an enclosed, self-supporting, strong bladder that can store from 20m3 litres up to 2,000m3 litres of dairy effluent or water. They are simple to install. Just roll out the bladder on a 100mm flat bed of sand, attach to your current effluent or water system and your storage solution problem is solved with no need for expensive engineering consent work. Flexi Tanks NZ Ltd are the NZ distributors of the Flexible Tank. They are made by French Company LaBaronne, who are the inventors of this type of storage, and have been manufacturing flexible tanks since 1959. Flexi Tanks NZ are based in the Waikato and work closely with industry professionals and farmers directly to provide storage

solutions that are simple to install and require no maintenance. The advantages include: • Easy installation — farmers can install themselves in a morning • No smell or crusting as tanks are totally enclosed • Safe — the tank is enclosed so you, your family or farm workers can’t fall in. • No security fencing required — just use a stock fence around the tank • 10-year manufacturer’s warranty with life expectancy at least 20 years • Ticks all the boxes to satisfy resource requirements • Depreciable asset • Top overflow vents can also be used to harness BIO Gas • Endorsed by councils and dairy professionals Stress less and call us now as the future of dairy effluent and water storage is here. Failure to consider the big picture I see some limitations in our farming research where so called advances in one area are creating problems in another area. Most vets have vast knowledge of animal disease, diagnosis and treatment but have not been trained in soil science. This is not a criticism but an observation. Recently I spent time in Denmark with a senior vet and nutritionist focussed on finding the reason for animal diseases, particularly in Europe. This is part of a treatment plan for farmers who can lose cows very quickly from clostridia and similar diseases like botulism. Dr Erri’s research has led him to the soil for answers. Unbalanced soil nutrients lead to unbalanced feed which is leading to the inability of cows to naturally fight diseases without the aid of vaccines and medicines to keep them healthy. A so-called advance in nutrition, a trend beginning in New Zealand, is the use of increasing rumen bypass feeds to produce milk. In Europe this trend is well developed and although this practice produces milk, Dr Erri commented that it is at the expense of animal health. Cows are barely completing two lactations under this system. He said that nutritionists are treating a cow like a machine and by bypassing the rumen are not respecting the full nutrition that the bugs in the rumen need to complete their job to maintain a healthy cow and her immune system. The conditions in a cow’s rumen also dictate the bugs which carry on out into effluent ponds which farmers are then encouraged to apply to the soil as fertiliser. Good effluent containing healthy biology can then contribute to a healthy soil. Another so called advancement in science is the heavy use of chlorine in our cowsheds. This chlorine is doing massive damage to our effluent ponds. The chlorine being used all produces residuals which upon entering the pond

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys?

wipe out the beneficial biology. The next step is the sterilisation of our effluent and eventually sterilisation of our soil. Furthermore a soil with compromised beneficial bacteria will create an abundance of pathogenic bacteria which

will eventually get to the feed which has grown in that soil. If only cows could talk, I’m sure they would have something to say about it. Amazing what you see when you look at the big picture.

Oi!

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

Beef continues to grow During the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 2.8 per cent — to 3.6 million head — while the decline in the sheep flock slowed sharply as sheep numbers recovered in key regions after drought and other challenges. The annual stock number survey conducted by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Economic Service highlights the continued growth in beef production, as farmers move towards livestock that are less labour-intensive and currently more profitable. “The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a five per cent lift in weaner cattle numbers, reflecting the high cost of buying older cattle as replacements and good grass availability. Meanwhile, the size of New Zealand’s beef breeding cow herd did not change,” says B+LNZ Economic Service chief economist Andrew Burtt. “The number of breeding ewes fell in most regions of New Zealand — and by 1.9 per cent overall.

The exception was in Marlborough-Canterbury, where there was a small increase (+0.3%) following the prolonged drought. “Ewe numbers decreased 2.6 per cent to 8.7 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 1.1 per cent to 9.1 million. The decrease in the North Island reflects residual effects of last year’s facial eczema outbreak — nationwide there has been more emphasis on retaining ewe hoggets, which indicates some rebuilding of the flock is occurring.” Consequently, the national hogget flock is up on last year with numbers increasing 1.7 per cent to 8.7 million, largely due to replacement ewe hoggets being retained on the East Coast to build up flocks, and an increase

in Marlborough-Canterbury to take advantage of the improvement in feed supplies after a number of difficult years caused by drought and natural disasters. Mr Burtt says ewes were in good condition at mating, and going into winter, due to feed availability. “Pregnancy scanning of ewes reveals good pregnancy rates in the North Island, but the later season as a result of climatic differences means it’s difficult

to generalise about the South Island.” Despite the small decrease in the number of breeding ewes, the lamb crop is expected to be up 1.1 per cent — to 23.5 million — 0.3 million more than last season. “This is the result of several factors, including continued improvements in productivity by farmers leading to better ewe lambing percentages, good feed supplies, and a lift in the number of ewe hoggets mated.”

RURAL WHEELS

Practicality and purpose by Andy Bryenton

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how.

When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink

cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The easiest fold-flat seating system we have ever seen drops the back row for even more space — literally whitewaretransporting volumes of it. And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first

Wairarapa

two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3 litre V6, and a torquey 2.2 litre diesel. That means that the Santa Fe doesn’t just deliver the whole clan to school, work, holidays and sports events. It also delivers smiles for the driver as well — and that’s well worth a look. The addition of a little spice into the SUV mix, with crisp handling to match a suite of practical details, is enough to make this seven-seater stand out from the crowd.

RURAL WHEELS

Return of the originator by Andy Bryenton

The 1970s was a dire time for the auto industry — while the United States plunged from musclecar excess into oil crisis panic, the great automakers of the continent struggled with budget cuts and technical issues. Even the sports cars and supercars of the late 70s failed to measure up to the style and sophistication of older models. But change was coming. In 1976, Volkswagen — largely famous for their long-lasting Beetle at this point — took their small Golf hatchback and equipped it with a fuel injected 1.6-litre engine. The result was a small car that blew the doors off several of its more ‘sporting’ competitors, founding a dynasty of nimble, smile-inducing Golf GTI models down the years. And, of course, a host of imitators. By the mid-1980s nearly every major automaker had a hot hatch in the running, but the benchmark always wore a VW badge. Safety and practicality intruded into the world of the GTI slowly, making later editions bulkier and slower for a time. But all that is over, and the latest Golf GTI is a back-to-the-roots driving machine. Let’s begin with a top speed pushing 249km/h, with a feisty 229 horsepower under the hood. Add in decades of development in crafting a responsive chassis and suspension setup, as well as what is perhaps one of the two best front-wheeldrive designs ever to hit the tarmac

(Honda build the other one), and you’ve got a recipe for excitement. Tempered, of course, with a suite of electronic safety measures which ensure thrills without spills. Then again, for some the bold styling and unabashed firepower of the Golf GTI may not be enough. If you’re the type who drizzles Tabasco sauce on raw chilli peppers in search of more kick, the even more powerful Golf R is a halo option, with more than 300 horses under the bonnet and

boasting the title of ‘fastest Golf ever’. Either car is sure to serve up plenty of fun, cleaving to the original formula — a car which is mild mannered on city streets, light on fuel, easy to park — and which can blow traditional sports cars into the weeds on twisty, engaging roads. And while station wagon and electric-powered versions of this iconic hatchback also exist, it’s the GTI badge that continues to push the limits of small-car performance, even after forty years.
