In late December and early January the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Communities Damien O’Connor classified the drought as a medium-scale adverse event across Taranaki, parts of Manawatu-Whanganui and Wellington, and the Grey and Buller districts of the South Island’s West Coast. Local authorities affected by the drought classification are: Stratford, New Plymouth, South Taranaki, Whanganui, Rangitikei, Manawatu, Palmerston North, Horowhenua, Kapiti Coast, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Grey and Buller. Mr Nash says the declaration of an adverse event allows government agencies to step up with additional support for farmers and growers in affected areas. “We know the rural community is having a tough time. Many farmers will have more urgent issues on their minds than tax compliance. Inland Revenue has confirmed there will be greater flexibility and assistance for those affected. I am pleased that IR is able

to respond in a more accommodating way. “I strongly encourage any farmers who are struggling to meet their tax obligations, because of the adverse conditions, to talk to their accountant and engage with Inland Revenue. We acknowledge the scale of the challenges faced by farmers in exceptionally dry conditions. “If any farmer has concerns, please talk to the experts who can help.” Inland Revenue will allow farmers in drought areas to make late income equalisation deposits for the 2016– 2017 income tax year. They will also be able to apply for early refunds. This allows farmers to smooth out fluctuations in their income from year to year. “Farmers can now better plan their financial response to the drought conditions. Tax rules are able to take account of extraordinary events like droughts, floods or earthquakes. It is important to acknowledge the reality of the situation that farmers face,” Mr Nash says.

Dairy Women’s Network CEO to step down

Dairy Women’s Network are looking to recruit a new chief executive in February 2018 as current CEO Zelda de Villiers will step down from her role in May 2018. Founded in 1998, the Dairy Women’s Network has doubled in size from 5000 to 10,000 members in the past five years, and has firmly established itself as an innovative and influential national organisation. “Zelda’s commercial and financial expertise has led the not-for-profit organisation into a strong position,” says chair of DWN Cathy Brown. “Under her direction, the organisation has solidified its systems, structures and reputation in the industry. We have also grown our membership significantly during her tenure. Zelda has recruited and developed a strong team of staff and volunteers who will continue to provide the high level of support our members have come to expect from us.” Ms Brown says it is a sensible time to reflect on the Network’s success so far and think about what is needed to take it into the future. “The CEO represents our organisation at the highest level, and we’re looking for someone who can help us take our next strategic step whilst ensuring we remain sustainable and continue to deliver for our members.” Zelda was appointed CEO in 2014 having spent more than 20 years in 13

various roles in the agricultural industry, including managing director of DeLaval NZ Ltd and several rural banking and finance roles in South Africa. She leaves the Network to focus on a new business venture in Northland. “My journey has been inspiring and humbling, and I have no doubt DWN will attract many worthy candidates for the chief executive role,” she says. “It has been an inspiring journey to lead an organisation that recognises and supports the contribution women make every day, not only to the businesses they work in, but also to rural communities throughout New Zealand.” Highlights during her leadership include cementing strategic partnerships with agribusinesses and national farming representative body DairyNZ, and overseeing the significant growth in membership. “ The 90 volunteer regional leaders have also helped increase professionalism and relevance in the industry. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing dairy farmers, volunteer groups and rural communities benefit from the various partnerships with industry and these have strengthened DWN’s core capabilities.” 2

With the aim to deliver the nutritious goodness of New Zealand sheep milk to consumers across the world, the Spring Sheep Milk Co. are combining their knowledge to create the best practices for farmers to deliver top quality products.

“O

ur goal is to build a sustainable, high-value primary industry that is innovative and collaborative through the PGP programme,” says CEO Nick Hammond. New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds. “Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.” The Spring Sheep farm has more than 2,000 sheep and utilises state-of-the-art 11

technology to ensure the milk is kept at the highest quality possible. “We use modern, world-class low agitation systems and protect milk quality every step of the way. The milk is held at less than two degrees Celsius,” says Nick. Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd. “People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of calcium

and protein, and it tastes delicious too. “Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. People in the Mediterranean and Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not surprised at its quality nutrition and digestibility benefits. Sheep milk does have advantages over traditional dairy operations, and research shows significant environmental benefits too. “In terms of genetics, the normal New Zealand sheep will produce 60-120 litres per year. We haven’t had access to the top dairy genetics, but MPI recently enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.” The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030. The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis. “New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat. We need systems to allow dairy sheep to thrive here. Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick. “The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That

scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the PGP programme, we are launching two smaller pilot sites in Cambridge. “A lot of farms are around 40 hectares but no longer viable, as cow dairy sites due to economic and environmental pressures. The environmental pressures for sheep milking are lower, and we are aiming to produce a model so farmers can change over by making a few slight changes for a small investment.

“We want to develop the skill sets of New Zealanders. We brought over John Ryrie, our farm manager, from the UK — he was born and raised in Scotland and has more than 20 years’ experience working on sheep dairy farms throughout Europe. Ultimately, we want New Zealanders to be successful at this.” The pilot farms will promote and

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia. The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia. “At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural 10

really appealed to us. We already recycle and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious. “Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.” The couple found the wax they originally

“We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.” The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk. “It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are shrink-wrap packaged and bagged,” he says. “Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with bees. There are lots of types of wax just as there is many types of honey.” Stacia says people trying to make wraps at home can be disappointed by the results because different waxes have different properties but they are all antiseptic and antibacterial. “Airtight seals can be created around containers with wax wraps, and they are great for workers making hay or silage or bringing in stock. Put in a chilly bin and you are good to go for the day. “Even the honey smell is welcomed by those who use them. The wraps help cheese stay fresh for longer and it helps hold extra large sandwiches together. “One couple wasn’t sure how it would work for them until they wrapped half an onion and forgot it was in the fridge for a few weeks. “It came out totally fine and now they have a set each.” All products are hand made — from

mixing the ingredients — to melting it down and creating the recipe — the mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand. “You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care. After use give it a wash with cool water and eco friendly detergent and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control. “You can easily make reusable bags for storing your snacks, herbs or

salad leaves in the fridge. One of my favourite uses is making a bag to place fresh flowers in as a gift. Add a little bit of water and paper and it won’t seep through the wax. “We sell online at our Lilybee store and enjoy connecting with customers and providing a quality natural product. “We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the rural community and nature. It is great to see New Zealand becoming more clean and green, and being able to use the wax from beehives adds to that.”

In his spare time he also enjoys getting out for some four wheel driving, riding his dirt bike, and spending time with his family. Robin ‘Cookie’ Cooksey grew up in the township of Dargaville and often holidayed at his cousin’s farm at Awakino Point where he learnt the basics of farming from a young age.

pon leaving school at 16 he joined the navy for five years before leaving to get married and moving on to a farming career. “The navy was a good experience and then I worked on dry stock farms for 15 years. They didn’t pay very well in those days and I had a growing family down in Pouto so we moved to Kaikohe to work on a Lands and Surveys block, and then to a Maori Trust farm,” says Robin. “At Lands and Survey I was on a horse all day especially during my lambing beat. It was great wandering around on horseback with a dog running beside

you. Mustering sheep and crutching only lasted a few days so we never had the opportunity to get fit like a shearer would. It was simple back then but the whole 15 years that I was shepherding we only got $20-25 per fat lamb, now they get $70-120.” Robin was into horses and played polo cross but it became expensive so he secured a job on a horse stud in Karaka and was there for nine years. “It was a sheep and beef farm with a thoroughbred horse stud. Before the horses would go to the races we rode them around the farm for six weeks for fitness. “I hadn’t ridden a racehorse before and I asked the owner what

the first horse I rode had achieved.” It was the Wrightsons’ three-year-old filly of the year which Robin says was a bit daunting. “I spent the rest of the day looking around the paddock for rabbit holes so I didn’t injure it. That horse won another cup and many more races — it was worth half a million dollars. The owner let me open it up across the paddock one day. You could feel the power and understand why it won so many races. “We spent most of our time getting the yearling horses ready. We would handle them as much as possible to get them used to people. They were probably more dangerous than the big horses because they are a bit wild until they calmed down. “At one stage I personally owned seven horses. If you get one, they mostly need grass and a bit of hay, and exercise is important. They only need oats if they do major work, teeth checks, and their hooves need shoeing every six weeks.” He eventually decided to try dairy farming and moved to the Waikato. “I started as a worker and the next season became a manager so I must have worked well. We used to feed maize silage but just a taste — we didn’t know the benefits of supplements back then. Things have changed quite a bit.” Robin worked on a hill country farm and he utilised one of the first feed pads. “They are a great invention as you don’t mess up the paddocks and save food wastage,” he says. “Later in life I decided to bring the caravan to Pahi Holiday Park and work in the area as my mum is still in Dargaville. Unfortunately

my wife died so I finished the season and started relief milking. “Relief milking is good because you milk the cows and go home. It gives you a bit of pocket money and stops you sitting around doing nothing. The sheds can be quite different with machinery, and each farmer has their own way of doing things. The biggest thing is learning where the paddocks are on each farm. It is important to be reliable and have an understanding of farm management and be useful to the farmers so they can rely on you when they need time out. 8

“When I am wondering around I kick the troughs and ensure no cows are in the drains or sick. You can train your eye and always check more than you need to. If you haven’t milked before, find someone to teach you — it is a good stepping stone into the industry. If you are good you can get plenty of work. “I have a launch now and go out on the harbour and fish when I want a feed or to relax. Even for full-time farmers, it is important to get off the farm and have a break. Fishing is just one way to do that.”

Identifying red clover pest

A red clover pest discovered and formally identified in Auckland in October 2016, has now been found right across the country. The red clover casebearer moth (Coleophora deauratella) discovery set off alarm bells and prompted a nationwide monitoring campaign. Special pheromone traps were distributed to red clover growers across the country over this summer’s clover growing and flowering period. “Traps were placed on farms from the lower North Island to the south of the South Island,” says FAR Seed Research manager Richard Chynoweth. “The results are not good news for red clover growers, with moths being found on farms, roadsides and other areas everywhere from Wairarapa to Southland. “As it was first identified in Auckland, we can assume they will be found

across the North Island as well. Given the numbers and spread of this pest, it seems likely that it has been here for quite a while. “My guess is at least a decade and could have been affecting red clover seed yields for several years.” Red clover casebearer is a small moth (about 8mm long) and is very similar to two other species of clover casebearer moth (Coleophora spp) that are already well established in white clover, however it’s principal host is red clover. Adult moths lay eggs on developing red clover flower heads and once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the florets to feed, destroying the growing seed. As the larvae grow, they adhere themselves to a chewed off floret, using

it like a cape or case for protection and camouflage. Feeding damage to seeds can severely impact on crop yields. “Not a lot is known about red clover casebearer in New Zealand,” says Mr Chynoweth. “We will continue to monitor its spread, but we need to understand its life cycle and exactly how that links with the red clover growth cycle. Once we have a clearer idea of that, we can start to consider control options, so that arable farmers can continue to grow this specialist crop. “We carried out initial laboratorybased insecticide trials and the

results indicate that some insecticides currently registered for use in clover crops are effective against red clover casebearer moth.” To check crops for the presence of red clover casebearer — inspect flowers looking for millimetre-sized holes chewed into the base of individual florets, or distinctive black droppings, also at the base of the florets. You may also see the casebearer moth larvae, which look like small red-brown cigars on the flowers. If evidence of casebearer is found, discuss management with your crop agrichemical advisor.

New measure for Kauri

The Kauri Dieback Governance Group have three measures planned to strengthen efforts to save kauri trees from dieback disease. It was agreed to put in place a Controlled Area Notice (CAN) for kauri dieback, a National Pest Management Plan, and a Strategic Science Advisory Group. “These new measures will give greater protection to kauri. They are targeted at getting people to do the right thing and will strengthen efforts to manage the spread of kauri dieback,” said governance group chair, MPI’s chief operations officer, Roger Smith. The first measure is to put in place a Controlled Area Notice (CAN) for kauri dieback under the Biosecurity Act 1993. “The CAN cannot ban people from going into a particular area, but it would put a legal requirement on them to follow the right hygiene standards when entering or leaving areas that have kauri. We aim to make these safeguards as easy as possible to follow,” says Mr Smith. Rolled out in stages, the aim is to have the CAN in place over the coming months. Work on preparing the CAN is under way and programme partners are deciding the details of how it will be implemented. This will include deciding the first location where the CAN will initially apply. “A staged approach will enable us to target higher priority areas first and

not reach beyond our capacity to deliver the work effectively. It also provides opportunities to learn and refine the controls as they are rolled-out to other places.” The second measure is that the CAN should ultimately be replaced by a National Pest Management Plan (NPMP) for kauri dieback. “A national plan is used for tackling major biosecurity threats and is the strongest form of regulation we can put in place. It will provide consistent regulations for dealing with kauri dieback that apply nationally, more robust programme governance and better access to funding. “The national plan would be a longerterm measure for managing kauri dieback and extensive consultation will be required to develop it.” The third measure is to set up a Strategic Science Advisory Group to ensure the fight against kauri dieback is supported by the necessary science and research. “This group will ensure the programme has ongoing access to some of the best minds and knowledge relating to kauri,” says Mr Smith. “Kauri dieback is a destructive disease and we take our responsibilities towards managing it very seriously. It

Usually some generosity is made towards the pump and equipment purchase but then the purse strings tighten and the minimum diameter pipe will be used, perhaps egged on by an unqualified salesman who has a special price on offer — just because someone told you it is appropriate “my relative uses it on his farm” etc doesn’t mean that it will do the job for you. It is almost impossible to have too large a pipeline diameter (within financial constraints), contrary to urban myth I often come up against. Another myth is the “you need to reduce the pipe size as you get further out to keep the liquid speed up”. Quite incorrect as a bit of experimenting or google of “pressure drop” will show. Any knowledgeable specialists should be able to calculate the size required from the flow required over the distance required and then apply acceptable pressure loss, to reach correct sized pipe. It isn’t rocket science. All reputable

pipe manufacturers will have friction loss tables which should be referred to. Ask to see the calculation, after all you are paying for their product! This is particularly so if working in PE or uPVC pipe. These products are extruded with a standard sized outside diameter and different wall thicknesses are used (giving different internal bore sizes) to give the various pressure ratings. As the walls thicken the flow speed and pressure loss will increase. So if say MDOD90 6.3bar pipe is considered

for flow of 30,000 l/hr, RX Plastics Technical Guide gives friction loss of 2.9 mH loss/ 100m. Let’s assume the job is 1,000m (29mH loss, 42 psi) rather high but for the sake of the example: If during the installation this were changed to MDOD90 9 bar due to short supply or whatever, the same manual tells us that MDOD90 9 bar at 30,000 l/H has 3.6 mH /100m or 52 psi loss over the distance. 7mH/ 10 psi could mean the performance is possibly going to be short of desired.
