NO PEAS, NO PEA WEEVIL

Please do not grow pea plants, sow pea seeds or use pea straw. A Controlled Area Notice is still in place for the Wairarapa region. The number of pea weevil has decreased in the Wairarapa but they haven’t been eradicated completely. The pea weevil only feeds on peas so if we remove their food, they’ll die out.

Living and working in a regional electorate like the Wairarapa means driving is a necessity. As a farming community, we really feel the pinch at the pump.

Make no mistake; the government collects huge amounts of tax on petrol. Every time you put $1 of fuel into your vehicle, 53 cents of that is going straight from your wallet into the government’s back pocket. Since the election, petrol prices have increased by 42 cents a litre on average. With this month’s 3.5 cent hike, plus the GST on the fuel price increase, the government is netting $220 million a year at current prices. To add to the insult for regional areas, the government has cut $5 billion from the regional roads budget, shifting that money to fund a tram set for Auckland instead. I am appalled that the government thinks the answer is another inquiry. Can you believe that there are currently 176 government reviews, working groups and inquiries being undertaken at the cost of $175m to date? I understand the need for information, but let’s face it, when it comes to petrol prices, the government can provide immediate relief and take action now. On average, local households in the Wairarapa are now paying at least $200 a year more in petrol taxes than this time last year. This increase is pushing up the cost of living and putting an extra financial pressure and stress on our households and businesses. The government promised no new taxes when it came into power. I don’t know how they can continue to explain this promise away. There are two more excise taxes planned over the next two years. These

tax increases are planned for 2019 and 2020, and regional fuel taxes will be available everywhere by 2021. While the government can’t control global prices for fuel, it can control its taxes. National has pledged to abolish regional fuel taxes and is opposing the new fuel taxes being put in place. It is particularly important for the farming community. One of the biggest costs on-farm is fuel for farm equipment and the transportation of goods. National has called on the government to axe its fuel taxes. Sign our petition to keep the pressure to relieve the heavy financial burden hard-working Kiwis are facing at the petrol pump at national. org.nz/axe_the_tax. 2

Investment in region’s railways The announcement of government funding to improve the region’s rail network infrastructure has been welcomed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and is expected to help expand the Wairarapa economy. Transport minister Phil Twyford announced that the New Zealand Transport Agency would be investing $193 million in funding to improve the infrastructure and capacity on the region’s rail lines. The funding includes $96 million in track renewals, largely on the Wairarapa Line. A further $97 million will be spent improving the infrastructure and capacity on the Hutt and Kapiti lines, which will allow more trains to be run more frequently, including $42 million to double track the lines between Upper Hutt and Trentham. “This is a game changer for public transport in the region and a real opportunity for us to bring our rail-lines and the quality of our service up to international standards,” says GWRC chair, Chris Laidlaw. “This is an upgrade that has been desperately needed for some time and council has been waiting for news on this funding for a number of years. This investment is a real boost for the region.” While the investment will bring improvements to infrastructure on all rail lines across the region, the Wairarapa would see the biggest benefits from the funding. “This funding boost is

also a key element in expanding the Wairarapa economy. The work being done means more freight will be able to be transported along the line, which will have long-term benefits for the Wairarapa,” says Mr Laidlaw. As well as the $97 million Crown investment on improving the capacity of the rail network, GWRC will spend an

additional $3 million on station asset improvements as part of the double tracking work between Trentham and Upper Hutt. “This investment will enable the Wellington region to have a world-class rail service that keeps our people connected with the places they want to go,” says Mr Laidlaw.

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

f o n r o r i a ss r a i t p y A by Ann van Engelen

Helen McKenzie and Warwick Potts live on 140 acres of rolling country that is home to a variety of heritage breed stock including Ryeland and Shropshire sheep, Clydesdale horses and Red Poll cattle.

“M

y grandfather and great uncle had Clydesdales, and that started me off — Clydesdales were the foundation of arable farming in New Zealand as there were no tractors in the late 1800s,” says Helen. “They aren’t heavy on soil like tractors and are good in vineyards for working amongst the rows. A Manawatu man, Dennis Hocking, used them in his forestry block. If you are only feeding a few bales of hay, they are ideal.” Helen got into rare breed animals talking to a man on a train heading to work in the early 1980s. “We wanted sheep, and he put me onto Bobbie

O’Hara. She had been trying to set up a conservation society for rare breeds in New Zealand and hadn’t had much joy. From this began the NZ Rare Breeds Conservation Society. “There are amazing New Zealandevolved sheep such as Hokonui, Stewart Island, Raglan and Campbell Island. When we sell breeding stock — we ask the buyer to call us if they decide not to keep them rather than have them put in the freezer because once they are gone, they are gone. “We started with Shropshires, which are a blackface Down breed and later acquired Ryelands, a whiteface Down breed. Both are considered as terminal

sire breeds although originally dualpurpose. The Ryeland is quiet, easy keeping, maternal and generally easy lambing. They have white wool and are fantastic for small landholders. “We used to pick the biggest, nicest replacement rams but omitted to select

for twins, now we include twinning in our selection criteria. Our sheep don't get pampered.” Ryeland were originally bred by monks at Leominster, grazing the rye lands in Herefordshire in the 1500s. “If feed is low ours may get a bit of baleage.

I believe if you have stud stock too well fed, they do not shift so well to other country.” Helen says Ryeland wool is good for spinning. “Another British heritage breed is the Lincoln. They were the foundation of the whiteface sheep in New Zealand because they coped with living in burnt cutover forest. They were succeeded by the popular Romney as time went on. In the 1970s they got down to around 1,400 stud ewes and had a resurgence in the 1980s. “Basically, farmers wanted the first or second cross rams to increase the wool weights of the whiteface flock ewes — because wool is paid on weight and Lincoln wool is heavier. Once the market was met, that was it, and last year there were only five flocks left and about 240 registered ewes — that is an example of how things can fluctuate. “With Drysdales, New Zealand invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into developing them for carpet wool. Now there isn’t one registered flock because most people aren’t buying wool carpets. The Rare Breeds Conservation Society is having trouble finding any to conserve the breeds’ genetics for the future. “With rare breeds, we don't have the money to import animals readily although now there is the opportunity to source semen and embryos from Britain. “When we first got Shropshires there were only 39 registered ewes in the stud book. Another flock of 40–60 were re-registered, and it has taken 30 years to re — establish the national

flock to around 350 registered ewes. The Shropshires colour-mark crossbred progeny and are prime early, with lamb carcase weights generally between 16– 18kg. “For small block holders, rare breeds are a great choice. Coloured sheep include Pitt Island Merino and the Arapawa. Hokonui, Raglan, New Zealand Marsh, Gotland and Finnsheep are also low numbers.” Warwick and Helen got into breeding Red Poll cattle after considering straight Galloways. “The Red Poll won over the Galloways as they were originally dual-purpose — meat and milk. They are naturally polled,

generally docile, and their red coats have great eye appeal. “Keeping rare animals is important to keep a broad genetic base as a resource for future use. New Zealand is geographically isolated and comparatively disease free. We may get isolated again due to disease outbreaks in countries we import genetics from. Recent problems include tick-borne Theileria orientalis and Mycoplasma bovis. “Countries could be closed off to us for the import of new genetics. I believe we should have a national embryo and semen bank to conserve our breeds for the future.”

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

A heritage adventure by Ann van Engelen

Penelope and Bill de Boer are enthusiasts of the Old English goat, known as the ‘Rawhiti’, which have been around since the Kauri milling days and were used to stop blackberry from invading the bush.

“T

hese goats are a small breed that a man named David Tuart saved from extinction many years ago. At one stage the goats were called ‘Tuart’ goats,” says Penelope. “We knew nothing about anything when we moved from town and had one cow on our six acres, but I found her too big to milk and thought goats would be a good choice for our land. “Bill was happy to milk the cow, and I found a breeding trio of Rawhiti goats for sale and these are a smaller feral type breed. All goats need to forage and have tree matter and roughage, grass

is not their first choice — but they are in the bush they may get shot because people mistake them for wild goats, so we bring them food daily. “Rawhiti are great mums, and their babies are born the size of a cat and grow to just above knee height. The gum diggers brought them out for meat and milk although they don’t have a lot of meat on them. Their milk is very special like sheep milk and makes infinitely better cheese than normal goat milk due to higher milk fat solids.” The animals are not quick growers, and Penelope appreciates that they

are a novelty for people and good for biodiversity. “We are careful not to put goats where the sheep have been because they pick up parasites, so they go on the land first, which is good, because they also eat longer grass. “They love tree lucerne and poplar. We planted them specifically as a feed option and cut them down at two and a half metres high. They strip the leaves and then the bark which means it dries better for firewood.” Penelope and Bill also provide hay and a few grains, however, grains can cause bloat if the animals are greedy. “We are self-sufficient and call our property a model farm. It is run like a large property raising our own meat and poultry, milk, vegetables and fruit. We have eight wire fencing, and internally we have a four wire electric fence to control grazing.” Rawhiti come in a variety of colours, and the couple have pure black and brown. “Some have a white splash on the side, and the black don't look so feral but brown get mistaken for wild goats. Health issues can be a problem so you need to ensure you can give them different food choices, we also include rose prunings and pine tree branches. All goats need company of other goats and the Rawhiti seem extra sensitive and get upset if a kid dies or something goes wrong. Penelope says they have a lifespan similar to sheep.

Rawhiti goats are smaller in size and come in a variety of colours and at times can be mistaken as wild goats

“We also have East Friesian sheep — the milk is brilliant. There are not many Rawhiti goats in the country, and it is important to save the breeds because they are under threat — we need to protect rare breeds because once they are gone, they are gone. “We partially hand-rear some kids and leave them with their mothers if they need help with nutrients. “The goats need sufficient shelter due to their size, and we have houses in the paddocks. If it spits with rain, they run for cover as if they are made of sugar and will melt. Don't tie any goat up to the roadside — there is a code of animal welfare ethics and tying them on the roadside is not pleasant. They

can’t get away from dogs, people or traffic that go past. We drench and do foot care ourselves now and get the vet to help when necessary but ordinary illnesses you can learn to deal with. “We do farm tours and show people where eggs come from, and Bill will squeeze a teat of the cow and show them where milk comes from. Some people are fascinated by vegetables in their natural state and have never seen broccoli growing. “More and more New Zealanders don't know where their food comes from so we are doing our best to educate people family by family. They get to touch the goats, sheep, calves and donkeys too — we absolutely love it.”

Stem cells and repair When people hear the term stem cells, they tend to think of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and heart disease along with a medical procedure that consists of harvesting these stem cells from the fat or bone marrow and then injecting these cells into a damaged part of the body.

What is less acknowledged is that your stem cells make up your body’s repair system and there every day your stem cells are hard at work repairing every tissue and gland in your body. If these stem cells are great at doing such a job why do we get ill? It’s because as we age when we have stress, both physical and mental, the bone marrow where the stem cells live, becomes more ‘sticky’. Therefore we don’t release as many stem cells as we need for the body to stay healthy — it is called the disease and the ageing process. Stem cells are our body’s repair system and the more we have in circulation, the more repair our bodies can do. The more repair we do, the healthier we become. If you are not releasing

enough stem cells on a daily basis, then you have cells in your body that are dying off without being replaced, and this ultimately leads to poorer health. Now imagine being able to support these stem cells on a daily basis. You can start to have your body repair itself like it did when you were in your twenties. You can feel and look younger, feel more vibrant, have a sharper mind and sleep better at a deeper level. When these stem cells turn into the glands that make and secrete hormones, your body will ultimately become more balanced and hormonal problems such as menopause and menstrual disorders can be eased. See our advertisement in this edition of Wairarapa Farming Lifestyles — The Acupuncture Clinic.

AG CONTRACTORS Getting the contract tender right The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how farmers can implement safeguards in the often complex process of tendering for work required in order to reap the best rewards. “Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,” the ministry advises. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning ‘Request for information’, a quote, a proposal or tender. “An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straightforward. However, applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across

AG CONTRACTS EST. 1984

is a waste of time and energy. Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise.” Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. “You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what

not to do, the next time you apply. You will need to think about the dayto-day and long-term effects on your business. Before applying, ask yourself — do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract,

The risk of spreading M bovis bacteria between farms on machinery is low, however it is good biosecurity practice to have a ‘clean on, clean off’ policy for both machinery and people, which will protect your farm business from weeds, pests, and diseases. Insist all machinery coming onto your property is thoroughly clean, and expect it to be cleaned before it leaves your property. Disinfectant should be used ‘after’ cleaning vehicles, equipment and boots/gear that have been in contact with stock or effluent — disinfectant does not work through dirt. Remember the rule for machinery, vehicles and equipment, whether your own, visitors or contractors — separate, clean and disinfect. Ask if it needs to come on-farm — ‘if not, keep it off’ and limit visitors to your property. Do not allow any used equipment onto your farm that has not been cleaned and then disinfected — this includes boots, overalls and protective clothing. Provide a rubbish bin for dirty gloves, disposable overalls and other rubbish and have a place, with a scrubbing brush for visitors to wash their equipment,

with a separate area and soap to wash hands. Keep stock trucks away from animal areas and have loading facilities close to the tanker track. Check with the trucking company that their vehicles are cleaned and disinfected after each client’s stock is moved. The tanker track must be kept clean with a ‘no go’ zone for stock to this area. Disinfect to destroy or inactivate the ‘bugs’ — apply the disinfectant and leave it to soak, so it works. Change disinfectant regularly — any common agricultural disinfectants are effective against Mycoplasma bovis bacteria. Use the product according to the label

directions or alternatively, you can use 0.2 per cent Citric acid — one teaspoon in one-litre of water. When disinfecting the farm dairy, you are required to use approved maintenance compounds. DairyNZ has developed many resources, including the Biosecurity WOF. Check out dairynz.co.nz/mbovis for everything you need to know about M bovis and biosecurity. If you are affected by M bovis, need support with form filling, getting access to feed, forming management plans, or you just need someone to talk to or get advice from, phone 0800 4324 7969 or email info@ dairynz.co.nz to arrange a visit from a member of the support team.

Kickstart to healing Some people who contact me have straightforward problems. I was speaking with someone recently who has moderate osteoarthritis (OA) in her knees. We put her on a programme that included some dietary recommendation, some helpful tips and two supplements. I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Others have complex problems. A woman in her 60s contacted me early this year and had problems with OA in her hands, knees, hip and back with sciatica down one leg. She had restricted mobility and also was very tired. I created a comprehensive support programme for her to reduce inflammation throughout her body, to improve circulation and improve energy. It included an intensive supplement programme for the first three months. This programme included high doses of omega-3 fish oil to supplement her high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet. I then added my joint support programme. It is a little different than many as it is high in chondroitin sulphate (CS). Studies confirm the benefits of high doses of CS. I started her on 1,600mg of CS, with 1,600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of a high potency, rapid absorption curcumin (from turmeric) complex. We then added a potent multi-

antioxidant complex that included acai berry extract, grape seed extract (OPC), resveratrol and others. Magnesium can be particularly effective to help relax tissue around arthritic joints especially in the complex tissue around hips and backs. Within two months she noticed her thumbs were less painful and her mobility had improved. As a bonus, the antioxidant complex had stimulated her energy processes and was feeling much better in herself. After five months she was now able to cycle again. Her thumb joints were almost pain-free. Now she describes herself as largely pain-free, has much more energy and feels confident about the future. The body is simply miraculous. All I did was to give her body what it needed and then the time to heal. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. The mystery of PTO pumps Power take-off pumps have been around for nearly as long as tractors. Early ones used belt drive systems to increase the impeller speed from the tractor output of 540rpms. Most pumps function best between 1,600rpm and 3,600rpm depending on design, so these variances often necessitated large differences in pulley size with accompanying problems in getting the power to the pump shaft. Also, the pump turned wrong way necessitating the pump being reversed, so that the suction end was away from the water source! Fortunately, several companies designed purpose-built units with integrated water-cooled gearbox such as the Ferrari F83 pictured. Customising of these Ferrari gearboxes can be done simply — allowing various input/ impeller ratios. Ferrari also builds specific PTO pumps for effluent to take the much harsher environment of pumping dirty, abrasive liquids and include a macerator as standard, and a chopper if required. Bigger is not always more beautiful. A large pump always uses more power than a correctly-specified pump. We often see medium pressure pumps being driven beyond their service speed in an attempt to produce the high pressure required. Irri-Max Ltd use specific graphs and tables to calculate which pump is correct for the job. Suction almost always needs to be larger than the inlet flange of the pump. Think about your kids’ eyes and cheeks as they suck on a thick shake with a small straw. Yep, the pump is similar. At worst, a situation called cavitation occurs, which is expensive in repairs. Tractor check — does it have the power to run the pump as required? Have the radiator, fan belt, fuel filters, etc been serviced recently? Have you got an engine control panel on it?

Brilliant for peace of mind and reliability. Easy MOP panels also include a digital timer, electric throttle and GSM (extra) to monitor by phone. Use a basic tractor for power, as it is generally more durable than electric and doesn’t mind being wet while portable, higher pressure is available on single impeller with no winter line charges for power. Against this, it does tie up the tractor, which should have a protection panel and also doesn’t suit a stop-start operation while needing the driveshaft correctly guarded and maintained.

BEST BUY!

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula with more chondroitin and over double the Curcumin is based on the latest research into joint-support compounds. The normal dose is 2 daily but I recommend a double dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd

Woolshed solution a Clean Sweep Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the manure build-up from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

Mark was giving a friend a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed using a big sucker machine, the day was terrible and wet, and it didn’t work — you spent all your time unblocking it. Mark thought there must be something easier and quicker to use for the job, but there wasn’t. He asked himself a few questions and came up with a hydraulic driven rotary hoe system that can grind off the hardest

of deposits. It is driven in up the pile line where it digs and once full is hauled out. Every time we trialled it we saw 10 things wrong but one thing that worked so we kept pushing ahead. The Clean Sweep machine was developed. It is versatile and can work on wet ground whereas a sucking machine clogs. Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons. By

using the Clean Sweep machine, you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20–30 metres. They assess every job prior for quoting. Clean Sweep Woolsheds is making the job simple for farmers, and they don’t have to handle it themselves also the end product is the great fertiliser that the client keeps. Some people give it to the local school or club to sell, or

they can spread it onto their paddocks. It is important to have a clean shed — it creates a healthy space on many levels. The sheep have good airflow if penned overnight; it also decreases wool staining and most of all it reduces the ammonia smell, which the shearers will appreciate. Clean Sweep Woolsheds also clean the count out pens. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well.

In one of the closest of many contests between the short and tall of Hawke’s Bay’s giants in global shearing, Mr Kirkpatrick won the race over 20 fullwooled crossbreds by 11 seconds and ultimately the contest by just 0.3 points. “It was the first time Mr Kirkpatrick had beaten Mr Smith in a single-breed final New Zealand in more than 20 months. He kept in front most of the way on what were good shearing sheep, although his 18min 38sec for the 20 was the slowest time for first-off-theboard in the Hawke’s Bay final since 2014 and more than a minute-and-a-half slower than last year’s quickest time,” said Shearing Sports NZ spokesman, Doug Laing. “While Mr Smith had the better shearing quality point on the shearing board, Mr Kirkpatrick scored best in the judging pens. The pair were comfortably clear of Manawatu shearer Murray Henderson, and fourth was Masterton shearer, Paerata Abraham. Poverty Bay winner and Pongaroa farmer David Buick was top qualifier from 23 in the heats but was eliminated in the semi-finals. “Competition organisers expressed a feeling of privilege to have new Master Woolhandler Pagan Karauria up for the day from Alexandra.

Meet the royal family by Andy Bryenton

Back in 1982, farming was a simpler trade in many ways. Nevertheless, the same challenges were on the mind of rural workers. The trusty two-wheeled farm bike had definitely replaced the horse, but when it came to lugging tools and equipment to far-flung quarters of the farm, something new was needed. Enter Whanganui Suzuki importer, Rod Coleman, who told the top engineers back at Suzuki headquarters exactly what farmers were asking for. What came back was a machine with four wheels rather than two, building on Suzuki’s already proven track record with off-road bikes and with small off-road cars. It was christened the LT125, and it started a revolution. Today, after 35 years, Suzuki still manufacture some of the hardiest quads in the business, with the hardearned name ‘king quad’ blazoned on the side. From the bulletproof and largely original layout of the LT-F300F through to the top-of-the-tree LT-A750XP, all share a common heritage and have been developed over those three decades using the same process which gave rise to the ‘granddaddy’, the original LT125. Suzuki listens to their customers, and make improvements to suit. That’s why, while the LT-A750XP — with its big bore, single overhead cam 722cc engine and power steering — seems a far cry from the simple original, it’s still designed primarily for farm work. It’s been designed to be easy to maintain, with a single cylinder liquid

cooled engine placed low in the frame for stability. Designed with plenty of low-down torque, and despite adopting the latest CVT transmission, it still offers high and low ratios and engine braking for safety and security when the going gets rough. Electronic fuel injection has increased

both power and fuel economy, while power steering has made it easier to handle and more comfortable to command during those long days of work. Underneath it all — and underpinning the entire Suzuki quad family — is the sense that these machines were not

made for racing, recreation or style. From day one, all the way back in the 1980s, these quads have been tuned up for the Kiwi farm. It’s a singular purpose — but then again, farming here is like nowhere else on earth, and it pays to have the right tool for the job.

ADVERTORIAL

Karts made for family fun Go Karts Direct is an exclusive importer and distributor of Go Karts for the New Zealand market. Having established a reputation for quality Drift Go Karts, the Drifta brand has been developed to include 10 different models including single-seater and double-seater karts. New to the market are our Electric ATVs designed for younger children, and our Scrambler ATV 125cc. We also cater for the two-tosix-year age group with our robust Pedal Ranger karts and Junior Ride-on toys. Fun for all ages, our single-seater Drifta karts are ideal for lifestyle blocks, farms, orchards, paddocks, fields and reserves. They are safe and easy to operate, having a low centre of gravity — their design enables them to drift rather than roll. They are a great way to learn driving skills, gain confidence and have lots of fun! The team at Go Karts Direct pride themselves on offering friendly and professional service, with full backup support and technical advice. Our full range of spare parts is also ideal for building your own kart or other DIY projects. The Go Karts come pre-assembled in a box, and we can freight to you anywhere in New Zealand. We offer
