Teens talk about their team hockey experience Madison Mould is 13 years old and has been playing hockey since she was eight.

Madison: To be a good hockey player you need to be strong physically and mentally, you need to have a good work ethic and work well with others.

Julia: I think you need to be a good skater and need to always work hard at practices so you can become better.

You also need to be mentally and physically ready for every practice and game.

The North Vancouver teen plays left defence on the West Coast Express Elite team. The team has three practices and a gym session with a trainer every week. Teammate Julia Lee,12, also from North Vancouver, started playing hockey when she was four years old. She is a forward on the team. We asked Madison and Julia some questions about playing their favourite sport.

NSN: What’s your favourite hockey memory?

Madison: Spending 12 days in Quebec this year participating in the Quebec international hockey tournament.

Julia: My favourite hockey memory would be my first travel tournament in Victoria.

It was a great experience and a lot of fun.

North Shore News: What was the hardest part of learning to play hockey?

Madison Mould: Probably learning how to take a proper slap shot that was accurate and hard.

Julia Lee: I would have to say learning how to skate and how to stick-handle and shoot with accuracy.

NSN: What was the easiest part of learning to play hockey?

Madison: Learning how to be a good teammate.

Julia: The easiest part for me was skating as I already knew

Augustin Wright pauses when asked what he likes about playing music.

It’s a difficult question to answer, he admits. After some thought, though, one word emerges: emotion. He likes the emotion music can portray.

“It’s like another language almost,” he says.

Augustin has been playing piano since he was five years old and cello since he was six.

Now 13 (he will be 14 at the end of April), he is an accomplished performer in both and has won multiple scholarships and

competitions. Most recently, his solo performance won silver at the International Passion for Music competition, and a gold for his performance with his chamber music trio. The prize was a trip to Carnegie Hall in New York to perform at a special concert on April 17. Augustin says he was pleased with the results and is looking forward to his next competition in May. Top prize for that one is a chance to play a concerto at the Orpheum Theatre.

“I really want to win that one,” says Augustin.

and now practices about one to four hours a day depending on his schedule.

Over the March Break, he was preparing for the May competition and was in the studio rehearsing for up to 10 hours a day.

Augustin says he doesn’t get nervous before a performance.

“I don’t take matters too seriously,” he notes.

Have a quick chat with him about music, though, and you’ll soon realize he certainly takes his music seriously.

Augustin has a passion for music and for performing. He talks about the history of classical music and makes specific distinctions between the instruments used in the 1700s versus the 1800s.

The romance era of classical music started around the year 1800, he explains, and that’s his favourite type of music from that era, with composers such as Mendelssohn, Chopin and Liszt among his top picks.

When he’s not studying the classics, Augustin listens to a wide range of music, including pop and even EDM. Anything on his playlist is fair game.

“I think it’s particularly bad to listen to only one type of music,” he explains. “Then you get all your knowledge about music from just one type of music.”

Learning to play two different instruments can be a challenge, but Augustin says he is glad he learned both piano and cello because it has given him more opportunities to play.

Most orchestras don’t have a piano, but most do have a cello.

Although he enjoys both, he does have a favourite: “I think piano is more fun to play because piano really clicks with me and I learn pieces really fast, well pretty fast.”

But there are pros and cons for each instrument.

Augustin wants to be an orthodontist when he grows up, and he wants to attend a combined Julliard-Columbia post-secondary program in which he could earn a science degree and a master’s degree in music.

Although it has taken a lot of hard work to get to where he is today with his music, Augustin thinks anyone can learn to play an instrument.

“Anybody can try anything. You always start by trying.”

There is more freedom for placement of fingers on a cello, which allows for semitones. Playing runs (fast notes up and down) is not too hard on a piano but is on a cello because there’s more movement involved.

And playing the cello is more tiring because it involves a lot more shoulder movement and using two arms in different ways as opposed to two arms in the same way with the piano.

There’s a lot more co-ordination that has to happen with playing a cello.

But cello music is easier to learn because there is only

Sunny Kim Taekwondo

A family-run martial arts school that’s been providing lessons on the North Shore since 1997 It’s all about family at North Vancouver’s Sunny Kim Taekwondo.

Grandmaster Jong Seol Sunny Kim (8th degree black belt) started the North Shore marital arts school in 1997.

He was later joined by his son, Master DaeYoung Danny Kim (5th degree black belt), who now manages the family-run dojang (school) and is the main instructor.

Master Danny’s mother, Ruby, handles the school’s administration and younger sister Julie is also a black belt (4th degree).

“We are one of the few schools in B.C. that is run by all members of the family,” says Master Danny. “It’s a closeknit community, a very friendly environment for families to come to learn.”

The school just moved into a brand new facility on Pemberton Avenue and 16th Street and offers traditional and sport taekwondo programs for kids and adults, as well as martial arts related fitness programs such as Taekwon Dance, Basic Weaponry, and Performance Martial Arts.

Master Danny says taekwondo classes are beneficial for kids for a variety of reasons.

“We like to focus on the traditional side with our younger age groups (4-6 and 7-9) which has not only the physical aspect of it but is also about building character, having discipline, building respect for one another, being a great friend in and outside of class, and being a responsible student, not only in taekwondo but also at school and in other institutions or academies.”

For older kids and their parents, the sport side of taekwondo combines a great cardio workout with the techniques and strategies of sparring.

“The sparring part is called Olympic-style sparring; it’s part of the Summer Olympics,” says Master Danny.

KidsBiz Animals are a favourite subject for drawing

The first animal drawing Owen Fitzpatrick remembers doing is a Mandarin duck.

This type of duck has a red bill, reddish face, purple breast, and two orange “sails” on its back.

“My first Mandarin duck was pretty good, it wasn’t too

good, it was pretty good,” says Owen, noting that was two years ago and he’s a much better artist now.

Another one of his earlier drawings, done at about the same time, was a bird of paradise. Birds of paradise are known for their colourful and elaborate feathers. Animals, and especially birds, are one of Owen’s favourite subjects to draw. He also enjoys drawing

mythological creatures. The nine-year-old particularly likes to work on fine detail and adding colour.

“I like drawing with pencils and coloured pencils. I really like making details, but I also like pastels,” he explains. “I don’t really like painting, you can’t do details.”

Participating in an art workshop or taking a class can be fun because you can do new projects you hadn’t thought of and work with materials you might not have, notes Owen. The March Break program he went to was called Birds of a Feather with instructor Jeri Engen. “Jeri’s a really good teacher because she does interesting projects that usually turn out good,” says Owen.

Other projects he really liked doing with the community arts council include drawing a parrot on black paper and drawing on some sort of gelatin material. One weekend course he took featured a trip to Maplewood Farm to draw the animals there. That was a bit more work than drawing an animal from a picture on an iPad, notes Owen. “They were walking around and it was harder to draw them.”

Once he starts a project, Owen really likes to finish it and he keeps pretty much everything he makes. His drawing notebook is threequarters full. “I literally keep everything I do. If I start

Learning to draw has been easy for Owen, and he continues to learn new techniques.

“Sometimes I just doodle stuff,” he says.

Sometimes he even doodles on his work at school, he admits with a laugh.
