KidsBiz Theatre kids get their cue at musical camp

It’s a tale as old as time, and this summer kids are going to revisit the popular story of Beauty and Beast as part of the Summer Youth Conservatory at Kay Meek Centre.

For the past five years, the musical theatre camp has hosted kids ages eight to 18, in a unique program that focuses on one production each term for each of the two age groups.

This summer, kids in the eight- to 12-year-old range will be mounting a production of Peter Pan, while the older kids, ages 13 to 18, will be working on a production of Beauty and The Beast.

“It’s pretty intense,” explains program director Kimberly Markarian.

In a professional setting, productions can be mounted in three weeks, but actors will arrive to rehearsals already knowing the music. In this program, the kids learn everything from scratch.

Markarian notes that they prefer to call the program a conservatory and not a camp because it’s more about learning.

Participants do not have to audition to get in, and every child gets a part in the production. In addition, they all get a moment

in the spotlight. Markarian explains that whether it’s as part of a small line, or a duo or solo, each kid gets a moment to shine, so it’s not just a handful of leads backed by a chorus.

The origins of the camp reach back to a West Vancouver school district camp that was only two weeks long. Markarian was involved in that program for eight years until the Kay Meek Centre got involved and use of the centre’s theatre meant they could mount a full production with sets and costumes.

The current program is six weeks long, culminating in two performances of each musical. Participants work with industry professionals, and Markarian says it’s geared toward kids who are keen and interested in theatre.

“We will take them wherever they’re at and help them develop but they have to have a real love for it,” she says.

Lots of group work, especially for the younger kids, results in plenty of strong bonds among the kids and many of them return to the program year after year.

Those interested in signing up don’t have to have any theatre experience, and Markarian says even shy kids can give it a try, as long as they’re willing to work and participate.

When asked what type of kid this program is suited for she says: “Somebody that has a passion for performing and a wild imagination, willing to explore.”

Wrestler weighs in on sport

Joseph Huh has a simple answer when asked what he wants people to know about wrestling: “I’d say that it’s the greatest sport in the world.”

The Grade 12 Sentinel secondary student has been wrestling since Grade 8. He was introduced to the sport by his school’s rugby coach who suggested he try wrestling during the off-season.

Huh says he decided to give it a try and fell in love with the sport.

He continued wrestling and by the end of Grade 9 realized he wanted more training on top of his school team, so he starting working out with the Capilano Wrestling Club. Last year, his wrestling coach moved to Elite Olympic Martial Arts in North Vancouver and co-founded a wrestling program there.

Huh followed his coach and is now an instructor at the dojo, teaching wrestlers ages four and up. His first adult student was a 24-year-old, 235-pound body builder.

“That was an experience,”

Wrestlers compete in weight classes, and Huh explains that winning is not

necessarily based on bulk and who is the biggest on the mat.

“It’s a game of strategy,” he says. “Whoever comes in with the superior strategy usually wins.”

And he should know.

“More than anything wrestling’s a mental game. If you can beat your opponent mentally and break them mentally then you’ve pretty much won,” explains Huh. “It’s really just one person’s will against another’s.”

Wrestlers sometimes focus on one of three main forms: throwing, leg shots, or defensive moves. Huh says he employs all three methods in competition and that gives him an edge. When pressed to reveal his favourite move, however, Huh admits he likes throwing because “it’s flashy and you get a lot of wows and cheers.”

He’s quick to add, though, that the audience reaction is not all about getting the glory, it is a mental boost during a match when the audience is cheering.

In September, Huh plans on attending UBC for English and writing and hopes to help develop the wrestling program there.

He enjoys teaching others about the sport and says anyone who is interested should give it a try. Traditionally a male sport, many girls and women are also involved in wrestling and Huh says more female wrestlers went to the nationals this year than male wrestlers from the North Shore.

Although matches are fast and demand focus, wrestling is a safe sport, notes Huh, because moves are controlled and good technique is emphasized. But he admits that learning the sport takes time. Every new move requires practice to perfect, and it is physically demanding.

“You have to activate all these little muscles that you never knew you had,” explains Huh. Young kids who are just starting out focus on building fundamentals, and when teaching Huh uses games to explain central ideas and the theories of wrestling. Other exercises help develop motor skills and get kids moving and more aware of their bodies.

Huh calls wrestling a niche sport, but says it has a unique appeal.

“It’s special because you compete solo, you’re out there alone, but you train as a team and you’re very much a team and you’re always working co-dependently, so that aspect is very cool.”
