SUMMER DAYS W e l c o m e t o V a n c o u V e r Lu x u r y L i V i n g ’ s “Take It Outside,” issue where we are celebrating the fact that we all made it unscathed through that long, rainy spring weather. The upside to all that pesky precipitation? Vancouver is looking pretty lush and lovely and we know you’re all ready to get out there and enjoy it! We are so excited to have CTV’s Tamara Taggart gracing our cover and giving you a little tour inside her beautiful home. Aside from her exquisite taste, the first thing you’ll learn about the 6 o’clock news anchor is that family comes first. With three kids, two cats and a giant dog, her house is the type of home where one is made to feel welcome the minute they step through the door. We also have Terry David Mulligan dishing on one of my favourite restaurants in the city, Giardino (it has seriously got the best patio in town), by the affable Umberto Menghi, plus TDM’s must-have, warm-weather vinos. Claire Newell shares her summer “glamping” tips, Bianca Solterbeck spills on Love It Or List It’s Jillian Harris’ favourite room, and style maven Lisa Tant profiles the Canadian fashion designers to watch. You’ll meet our influencer, Lotte Davis, the force behind AG Hair Group, whose passion lies in empowering girls through education in sub-Saharan Africa. We’ll

INFLUENCER: LOTTE DAVIS AG HAIR’S FOUNDER EMPOWERS WOMEN THROUGH GOOD HAIR—AND EDUCATION.

W

HEN LOTTE DAVIS

founded AG Hair along with her husband, John, in a North Vancouver basement back

in 1989, the goal was to give women confidence and empowerment—in a bottle. Nineteen years and two beautiful children later, the compassionate redhead is still committed to helping women reach their potential, only now it’s by providing women in sub-Saharan Africa with access to schooling. Having grown up in South Africa during the

apartheid era and witnessing the mistreatment and submission of women firsthand, Lotte was inspired in 2008 to found One Girl Can, a charity that raises funds to provide formal education to some of the 70 per cent of the women in the area who go without it, to help them escape the cycle of poverty. Fast-forward to 2017 and Lotte’s work has paid off. Through the organization, she has raised more than $3.4 million for the cause, has built five schools in sub-Saharan Africa and has 196 girls on full scholarships in university and secondary school, many of them on the path to becoming science and math professionals. The support in Vancouver has been overwhelming. Case in point: a silent auction on April 13 raised a record-breaking $306,000, 100 per cent of which will go towards building science labs at a girls’ school in Kenya, and will fund 36 new university scholarships for girls. While Lotte spends a large portion of her time travelling in Africa to raise awareness of her charity and to meet the women and girls whose lives the organization has impacted, she is also still focusing on developing her hair care business, whose

20

SAYS LOTTE, “ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN AFRICA WILL CHANGE ONLY WHEN GIRLS BECOME DOCTORS, SOFTWARE PROGRAMMERS AND CIVIL ENGINEERS. BY PROVIDING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES TO THE SCHOOLS, WE GIVE GIRLS A CHANCE TO MOVE A NATION FORWARD AND BEGIN DISMANTLING POVERTY.”

In July AG will release its Natural line formulated with over 98 per cent plant-based ingredients, including apple cider vinegar. And, of course, a portion of the proceeds from every bottle sold will support building schools in Africa. Because that’s how Lotte rolls. Learn more at onegirlcan.com, aghair.com —Lise Boullard

THE HEART HOUSE

CREATING A HAPPY HOME FOR HER FAMILY—AND THEIR MANY PETS—IS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE FOR CTV’S TAMARA TAGGART. WORDS | FIONA FORBES, @fionaforbes PHOTOS | JANIS NICOLAY, @pineconecamp

T

he first thing you notice when you step across the threshold of Tamara Taggart’s house is that it’s truly a home. Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street in

Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, this 2005built, heritage-style house feels welcoming the moment you step inside. On the morning of our cover shoot, we are greeted by the confident news anchor, who is returning from taking her giant (and somewhat clumsy) airedale, George, for his morning walk around the block. With her perfect bone structure, blonde locks and deep-set brown eyes, she looks as beautiful without a stitch of makeup as she does every evening reporting alongside fellow CTV anchor Mike Killeen. Like many families, the kitchen is where the parents, kids (and pets) spend most of their time hanging out, cooking, doing art, reading, writing and, of course, eating. Tamara remodelled the space a year and a half ago, repurposing the cupboards by adding cabinet pulls from Restoration Hardware and a new island, which was custom-designed from The Cross Decor & Design. The fireplace was taken out and replaced with a big, comfy couch and armchair with a meticulously organized Stor-X Media wall housing books, chachkas and the TV, which is out of sight when not in use. Tamara and Dave had “real” Stormtroopers show up on his birthday party—and it did not disappoint. Turns out, the guys behind the Stormtrooper’s costumes were huge 54-40 fans who took off their helmets and snuck a few beers in the garage with Dave during the celebration. Great memories for Beckett and his pals (and for Dave!). As we begin wrapping up the shoot, the spring afternoon sun is high in the sky, streaming through Tamara’s oversized living room windows. We hear a car pull up out front and see that Beckett is arriving home from school. He trots up the stairs, wearing a cooler-than-cool old school Joy Division concert tee (likely a gift from Dad) and says a sweet hello. The din of the organized chaos is starting up again as we bid our farewells.

THE FIVE HOTTEST LANDSCAPING TRENDS, ACCORDING TO PAUL SANGHA

1

There is a movement towards limiting materials and plant varieties, whether they’re ornamental or native. The key is to contrast textures and seasonal plants so that they have greater year-round interest.

2

LOSING THE LAWN

As water restrictions increase in frequency, there has been a trend towards replacing lawns with shade and moss gardens. Personally, these are the most beautiful gardens I have seen for their textures and subtle colours.

3

LIGHT IT UP!

Light is the paintbrush on a dark canvas, able to create shadows, textures, and patterns, particularly on shorter winter days. And LED is a major movement in all lighting, allowing the ability to illuminate where it was once almost impossible. THE EDIBLE GARDEN

MULLY’S CHOICE: THREE PATIO WINES WHAT TO SIP THIS SUMMER.

I

’ve alWays had a problem with the term “patio wine.” I think it sells really good wines very short. I won’t make a federal case out of this but most of the winemakers I talk to agree with my opinion.

Having said that, let’s recommend some patio wines. Domaine Lafage Miraflors Rosé 2015: raspberry

medium body, juicy and a beautiful drink. A plus is that the bottle is handsome with a glass stopper. A blend of Grenache Gris and Mourvèdre. Ninety points in The Wine Advocate! That’s some patio wine. $29 at Broadway Wine Shop.

T A E M WE

AGAIN

® CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF 21 DAYS AGED FOR A MINIMUM OF INCREDIBLY JUICY & TENDER SIMPLY THE BEST

I could also recommend a dozen Sauvignon Blancs. Lots to choose from but I have to start somewhere so why not Naramata Bench’s Lake Breeze? Named Canada’s Best Small Winery and Best Winery in B.C. by the National Wine Awards of Canada in 2016. The 2014 Semillon was awarded the top scoring Platinum medal by the organization as well. Leading the charge is their 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (800 cases produced at $22 each). A midpoint between green and tropical/ herbs and lemon-lime. Clean through and through. Very popular. When they sell out, a fine second choice is their Pinot Blanc (2,000 cases/$19). At Everything Wine in North Vancouver, shop.lakebreeze.ca/store My third recommendation comes from Bob and Senka Tennant’s Terravista Vineyards on the Naramata Bench. Their Viognier is wicked good. But it’s the Fandango and Figaro that make the cut. Fandango is a blend of Albarino/Verdejo (550 cases/$25). Figaro is Roussanne/Viognier (400 cases/$25). Bob claims it’s a winter white. You decide. Here’s the deal: if you’re not sure of the Spanish whites, don’t worry. Trust the winemakers. Both wines are

Bene. FYI, when both wines sell out—halfway through summer—switch to Terravista’s Viognier. It’s only $19. At Swirl Wines Store in Yaletown, Village VQA Wines in Kitsilano, terravistavineyards.com.

SETTLE IN |

WHEN “GLAMPING” officially entered the

cultural lexicon around 2007, high maintenance holidayers around the world rejoiced! Finally, the hospitality world was offering up getaways with access to nature, fresh air and the soothing sound of rain on your tent without all that schlepping. By definition, glamping is camping that offers resort-style services (and marriage-saving amenities). Rockwater Secret Cove Resort, open year-round on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast, has taken this concept and given it a sexy, West Coast spin. Nestled into stunning Secret Cove, Rockwater feels like three resorts in one. You have The Lodge, with its traditional 16-room motel-style layout, newly renovated dining lounge, and ocean view pool and patio. Then there are The Cabins. These rustic, throwback cottages were originally designed for salty dogs (or the occasional folk goddess). Yes, the one and only Joni Mitchell

stayed in cabin 11 for months while her Sunshine Coast home was under renovation. But it is what’s behind door number three, or rather along a 1,500-foot cliffside boardwalk, that will prompt you to pack away that mildew-scented sleeping bag for good. The Rainforest Suites are the work of Vancouver-based designer Lucille Fares, who designed the 16-by-24 foot safaristyle, luxury tents to enhance—not compete with—the natural environment. The tents are accessed by a 1,500-foot elevated cedar walkway that looks a lot like the upscale version of an

Ewok village. It’s unclear whether a fictitious mammaloid would actually appreciate a Jacuzzi tub, fireplace or heated floors, but I know I sure do. The six-minute trek from the parking lot to my cliffside oasis leads me through towering Douglas fir and abundant rust-coloured arbutus. A bald eagle offers up a shrill welcome and my nostrils sting (in a good way) from the fresh smells of the sea. I can feel the city stress leave my body with every step. In my hand is a key to suite 63, which is one of 13 tents with unobstructed ocean views and private balconies. Five of the suites are perched up high in the forest canopy and the other eight rooms dangle over the water’s edge. I’m thrilled to see that my tent is close to the ocean, but elevated enough to provide pretty views of Thormanby Island. The interior of my Rainforest Suite is chic and understated, wonderful ocean-view hydrotherapy tub for two. If you’re like me and dream of spending 24/7 in a bath robe, you’re in luck. Rockwater offers a full room service menu from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and I’m happy to report that the breakfast I ordered arrived in less than 15 minutes, and piping hot. Dominating the open concept room is, of course, the pillow top king bed where you should be spending the majority of your time. This is an adults-only area of the resort after all! That being said, canvas walls are thin, and in the warmer months you will probably want to open the zippered windows or balcony doors.

Don’t miss out on the tender fried chicken with housemade biscuits and collard greens. The dinner menu wowed me with smoked Castelvetrano olives, port poached pear salad with Danish blue cheese and the winter squash risotto with pine nuts and brown butter. The wine list is small, but features some great Okanagan standouts like Blue Mountain’s Pinot Noir, and the beer list has a few great micro-brews.

FRIDAY Boaters check in at the customs dock, locate their slips amongst the 375 on offer, thank the helpful dockhands (smartly dressed in polo shirts), and hightail it to the Madrona Bar & Grill for happy hour. The Madrona is known for barbecued ribs and interesting cocktails (Pig War Martini anyone?). Summer evenings, Roche Harbor staff participate in a traditional Retiring the Colours ceremony before sunset.
