The District of North Vancouver is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to affordable housing – or more precisely, putting its land where its mouth is.

District council voted in favour of a motion from Coun.

Jim Hanson Monday night asking staff to draw up a list of district-owned land that may be suitable non-market housing and to identify possible partnerships with private, non-profit and senior government sources to build non-market housing on the land.

“In short, I’m seeking to tease out of this council majority support for us to stand up, offer ourselves to be counted and indicate that we are prepared to do what it takes to be part of the solution to an emerging crisis of housing affordability in North Vancouver district for working families, seniors and others who are being pushed out by the market,” Hanson said.

Hanson’s motion was inspired by the plight of Mountain Court residents. The 75 families in the aged but affordable Lynn Valley complex will be evicted to make way for

It’s likely back to the drawing board for the North Vancouver School District to consider what to cut from its Argyle secondary replacement project.

A decision to scale down the project is the most likely scenario after the school district recently failed to win municipal approval of a plan to rezone and sell a parcel of land next to Braemar elementary. That has left the school district

about $2.3 million short of the money needed for its preferred rebuild project.

Schools superintendent John Lewis told trustees at their recent regular meeting the school district has still raised enough money through land sales – approximately $13.8 million – to replace the school rather than doing just a seismic upgrade.

But the cut to the budget means the school district likely won’t have the cash to pay for all the extras officials had hoped to include

– including classroom space for about 100 more students, a community fitness facility and change rooms that could be accessed from the field, plus room for a 250-seat performing arts area.

That “may not be as large in scope as intended,” said Lewis. “Some of those may not be possible.”

The cut to the budget will likely mean the building will have to be reduced by about 10,000 square feet, said Lewis – from an originally envisaged 130,000 square feet to about 120,000 square feet.

Argyle is currently built to an official capacity of 1,200 students, but the

school district had hoped to build a replacement school with a capacity of 1,300 students. “If we build it at 1,200 there are going to be some space pressures,” said Lewis – meaning the school district may have to pay for portables or an addition later on.

But Lewis said no decisions can be made on the design for a new school until the province signs off on a project agreement for Argyle that will specify how much money the school district is allowed to spend on the project.

“We are patiently waiting,” said Lewis. “No design work has been done.”

regularly recalculated, Lewis told trustees.

In the fall, a basic replacement of the school was pegged at $45.7 million while the district’s preferred option had a price tag of more than $51 million.

This fall, parents whose kids are in the Argyle catchment area started an online petition to try to get the District of North Vancouver to approve the Braemar land deal. But parents whose children attend Braemar and others in the neighbourhood were equally opposed to the development plan.

District councillors said if parents want to blame someone for the Argyle project being scaled down they

should look to the province, which has refused to fund the cost of full school replacement projects.

Ministry of Education spokeswoman Kaitlyn Rosenburg said in a statement this week that “the replacement of Argyle Secondary is one of the highest priority high school projects current being considered” by the ministry.

Rosenburg said the province is still in the process of doing “a final detailed review” of a report submitted on the project by the North Vancouver School District. “We are optimistic we will be able to move forward with this project soon,” she stated.

Family friend Jeanette Sha, who came to the bail hearing at the court on Tuesday, said Christine Lefkove struggled as a single mother to help her son, who spent many of his teen years under government care.

The family “fell through the cracks” in the social services system, said Sha. Lefkove had gone to live with his father in the United States at one point, said Sha, but later returned and was placed in government care again.

Lefkove had been living in a group home but had recently “aged out” of the social services system after he turned 19 last month.

Outside of court, Hollis Lucky, Lefkove’s defence lawyer, described the circumstances of the case as “unique and tragic.”

Christine Lefkove had suffered some serious health problems in recent years, which had resulted in hospitalization at times, had struggled with alcohol abuse and was physically frail, said friends.

“The whole thing is just so sad,” she said.

A publication ban

imposed by the judge prevents publication of any details heard at the bail hearing or reasons for the judge’s decision.

North Vancouver RCMP were called to 102 - 312 East First St. in North Vancouver just after 6 p.m. Jan. 25 after a local resident called 9-1-1 to report hearing a dispute and possible assault taking place in a nearby apartment.

Police arrived and forced their way into the apartment

where they found Christine Lefkove. She was rushed to hospital and put on life support, but died of her injuries in hospital about 24 hours later.

When police arrived at Christine Lefkove’s apartment, they spotted a man escaping over the apartment balcony.

The man – who police identified as Alex Lefkove – was arrested following a short foot chase.

Outside the court, Sha said she wasn’t sure if she should come to the bail hearing but wanted to be there to show support for her friend. “I miss her,” she said.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

Alex Lefkove has not yet entered a plea.

Lefkove’s next court date is set for Feb. 10 when he is expected to appear by video.

Police from Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Squamish worked together on numerous cases involving reports of stolen boats, break-ins to vessels moored at local marinas and to cabins on Boyer, Passage and Bowen islands, said Vancouver Police Department marine unit spokeswoman Const. Janet Stringer.

Incidents included 21 cases of boats reported stolen and recovered, 29 break-ins to vessels and 13 break-ins to island cabins, she said.

Investigation showed suspects had been stealing dinghies from local docks and marinas and using those to target other vessels, including anchored vessels, said Stringer.

Stolen boats were also used to get to the islands in Howe Sound and break in to cabins on remote properties there.

But, while the motion found unanimous support when it came time for votes, it also triggered a debate happening in councils around the Lower Mainland. Housing is a federal and provincial responsibility and municipalities have limited means to raise money to provide the services expected of them, Coun. Robin Hicks said.

Before going ahead with any projects on district land, Hicks said he’d want to see a full accounting of what the foregone revenue from the land would be as well as clear and identifiable support from the public.

“I’m not saying we shouldn’t do it but I’m saying we should go into it with our eyes open,” Hicks said.

Coun. Roger Bassam put it even more starkly.

“We simply, as a municipality, cannot afford to address the housing continuum and all the needs that exist in our community. We don’t have the resources. It will require senior governments, both the federal and provincial, to step in and fulfil their mandates around housing. To be clear, the municipal government is not responsible for providing housing,” he said.

And Bassam added, the district should only be developing lands in accordance with its official community plan, which emphasizes that density should be concentrated in the four town centres: Lynn Valley, Lions Gate, Lynn Creek and Maplewood.

“The district owns a lot of land but we don’t own a lot of land in our town centres,” he said.

The motion comes on the eve of an event aimed at urging the North Shore municipalities to make concrete commitments for action on the housing crisis.

Metro Vancouver Alliance, a non-partisan group that represents people with myriad

religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, is hosting an affordable housing assembly on Monday at St. Catherine’s Anglican Church in Edgemont Village at 1 p.m.

A strong impetus for the public meeting, according to MVA’s lead organizer Deborah Littman, was West Vancouver’s willingness to look at some solutions involving non-market affordable housing using land owned by the district. West Vancouver recently purchased a piece of land adjacent to the West Vancouver Community Centre from Vancouver Coastal Health. While no decisions have been made, stressed acting mayor Craig Cameron, West Vancouver council is eyeing at least part of it for affordable housing. “…Because it’s a good place for housing. It’s so central, so close to transit, close to services, shops and we have demonstrable need,” Cameron said. “We need more housing for elderly people. We need more housing for families who have limited incomes and we need housing for disabled people.”

The City of North Vancouver has been building up its supply of below-market housing in exchange for extra density in new condominium projects. That’s something West Vancouver is also looking into, Cameron said.

On Monday, the Globe and Mail reported the City of Vancouver was putting up 20 properties worth $250 million in hopes the new federal government would invest in affordable housing.

Children are encouraged to attend the affordable housing event on Family Day, which will feature three speakers – a student, a senior and a single mother – who will give personal testimony of how the North Shore’s affordable housing crisis has impacted them.

Stolen items valued at $200K From page 4 In some cases, the thieves spent time eating and drinking on the boats and in the cottages they were stealing from.

Some of the stolen items recovered included marine clothing, navigational and safety gear, tools, electronics, liquor and food.

Stringer said the value of the stolen items is estimated at $200,000, including one dinghy worth about $50,000.

Investigation led police officers to execute a search warrant at the West Hotel at 488 Carrall St. in Vancouver on Dec. 1, where a number of stolen items were discovered.

Many items have already been identified and returned, but police are still hoping to locate owners for some of the recovered property.

Police said waiting vehicles or taxis were apparently used to get stolen items from the water back to a room at the singleroom-occupancy hotel. In some cases, items were moved on foot.

Stringer said it appeared to investigators that at least one of the thieves likely had a background in boating.

Charged in the case are 35-year-old Jeremy Edward Donald Walker and 39-year-old Liam Eric Fell.

Walker faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a firearm obtained by crime and other gun offences.

Fell faces charges of break-and-enter, possession of property obtained by crime and obstructing a peace officer.

Police are warning boaters to secure their vessels and be aware of suspicious activity such as smaller vessels hovering near a larger boat while property is being transferred, and people moving items to the shoreline.

I

t used to be a popular PR stunt among politicians to attempt living a week on a “welfare diet,” which was usually just a few dollars a day, to highlight the inadequacy of social assistance.

Today we’d propose a new challenge for our council members, MLAs and MPs: Let’s see a middle-class house hunt.

The average household income in the City of North Vancouver, for example, is $44,306. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. recommends that no one spend more than one-third of their income on shelter, which almost half of the city’s renters are doing. Our politicians can join in the lineups of people filling out applications for basement studios or Diefenbaker-era apartments. Or they can join the quarter of our residents who are paying more than 50 per cent of their income to have something nicer.

Lots of luck if you’ve got kids! A little

skin in the game might give them invaluable perspective.

To their credit, our municipalities on the North Shore are actively working towards adding more affordable housing to the local supply but we’re talking about a few units here, a dozen units there – a drop in the bucket compared to the societal problem we now find ourselves in.

This is a crisis that demands federal and provincial intervention. But we’ve yet to see any of our councils show much interest in the role foreign capital is playing in local housing costs, perhaps because the boom in land values has rewarded some with more equity than they ever dreamed of. But is it having a knock-on effect in the rest of the market? After years of denying there was a link let alone a problem, the province admitted this week that they’ve quietly begun their own study.

It’s about time.

Jilted museum lovers get the cold shoulder

O

ne of my very favourite places on earth is the Museum of London. I’m still relishing my visit to the 2014 exhibit Sherlock Holmes: The Man who Never Lived and Will Never Die, which featured everything from a Turner landscape of Reichenbach Falls, the location of the epic battle between Holmes and Professor Moriarty, the Napoleon of Crime, to the blue coat and scarf worn by Benedict Cumberbatch (the latest Holmes incarnation) in The Reichenbach Fall, the literal cliff-hanger ending season 2.

The Museum of London is always pulling off tricks like this: applying imagination to the study and celebration of its own backyard. Of course, it’s one of Western civilizations most significant backyards, but wouldn’t it be nice if we would study and celebrate our own backyard with the same panache?

Council was concerned that the donation target had not been reached, and that ongoing costs and upkeep would eventually sink the museum.

Cue the outrage. One source close to the story wonders if council has a secret option for the Pipe Shop it’s not sharing with anyone just yet, because the decision makes no sense. “We’d already raised 80 per cent of the target. With approval, it would have been a slam dunk.”

The deadly consultant’s report, which studied the now-defunct Storyeum and the Museum of Vancouver, concluded that “It is very difficult to get a historic museum profitable within Vancouver.”

Nancy Kirkpatrick, the museum’s director retorts that the North Vancouver Museum and Archives “is a bimunicipal agency that is not intended mandated or designed to

Oh. John Gilmore, president of the Friends Society of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives, came back to council with a letter dated Feb. 1 stating what is becoming increasingly obvious: “It would be a shame to kill this project based on a flawed report.”

If jilted museum lovers are hoping to go to the District of North Vancouver to find a friendlier jurisdiction, they’re destined to be disappointed.

The city and district have a partnership where the city is responsible for the museum and the district for the North Vancouver archives. But district Coun. Roger Bassam is not concerned that the city killed the project without

consulting the district, and in fact says the district “respects the process of decision-making at the city”, which may be newsworthy in itself, considering the squabbling that often goes on between the two.

But Bassam says he and his colleagues are more interested in the idea of a “distributed museum,” in which displays are installed in libraries like Parkgate or Capilano and community centres. “That way, our heritage will get tens of thousands of visits. People are already coming here already.

We don’t have to force them to go to a museum.”

Bassam hopes that when the new Delbrook rec centre opens a year from now, there will be a display celebrating North Vancouver’s historic athletic highlights. Did you know, for example, that North Vancouver’s Bill Parnell held the British Empire Games record for the mile, four minutes and 11 seconds, before Bannister and Landy broke four minutes four years later?

Either did I. Bassam hopes the Delbrook gym will be named after Parnell, and so do I as I

plod along on my 10-minute mile. “We don’t do a very good job of celebrating our heroes,” he says.

Well, exactly. And I know just the thing…a museum!

There’s a passage in Gilmore’s letter I find quite insightful: “No place really becomes a community,” he writes, “until it is wrapped in human memory, family stories, tribal traditions and civic memories.” Connections and commitment to each other are made stronger when a space is provided to create new stories and experiences.

Gilmore is hoping for a third-party, independent review, agreed upon by both the city and the museum, to review the consultant’s report.

Hopefully, we haven’t heard the end of the museum of North Vancouver.

Shipyards an inspired setting for museum

Dear Editor: The North Vancouver Museum at the Pipe Shop in the Shipyards created a vision of a new vibrant, innovative museum.

Conceived as a transparent museum – open to the plaza, connected to the routes through the Shipyards, and with flexible programming space – it could have been the community heart on the waterfront, supporting a variety of programs for citizens and visitors alike.

This was also a unique opportunity to feature the heritage building as an important, living, refurbished artifact that could be enjoyed by all. What better venue for the museum than a cherished heritage building that tells many stories and celebrates the Shipyards – home to the shipbuilding industry on the North Shore for over a century.

As Martin Luther King

said, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” The NVMA has spent many years developing a vision for their new location that weaves the history of North Vancouver with the threads of our lives today.

The museum’s goal was to honour its traditional foundations, while using the collection as a catalyst for creating dialogue, generating meaning and connecting the community. No longer passive places, museums today are becoming places of community engagement.

In our digital society, public places to gather and learn are increasingly important.

This heritage building on the Shipyard Plaza is ideal.

Our firm, Urban Arts Architecture, worked with the museum to develop their program and feasibility study for relocating the museum in the Pipe Shop.

We were inspired by the passion and commitment of the

museum board, director and staff in creating the vision for the museum. These dedicated individuals have spent years working on this project and have raised 89 per cent of their contribution through a concerted fundraising campaign that is ongoing. This highly successful campaign clearly demonstrates the citizens’ interest in a revitalized museum.

This was an incredible opportunity to retain an important building for public use shared and open to all.

Locating an important civic institution in the Shipyards, will create vitality, programming, and partnerships at the centre of North Vancouver’s public realm on the waterfront.

We trust that council will review their decision.

Pipe Shop event space holds youth appeal Dear Editor: Born and raised on the North Shore and having been a younger resident of Lower Lonsdale for the past 10 years, it’s been incredible watching and experiencing the rapid evolution of this neighbourhood first-hand.

Don’t get me wrong; I believe there is a need for the North Vancouver museum and its vast history; I just don’t think it should be located in the Pipe Shop.

Most of the feedback on social media and articles I’ve read arguing for a museum appears to have come from an older

generation, so as such, as a member of the younger generation, I’d like to argue why the Pipe Shop should remain a multi-use facility.

Although sometimes empty during slow seasons, I’ve seen and attended many different events taking place there: summer night market, winter market, Halloween parties, random Wednesday night parties and weddings alike.

I think having a unique space that the public can take advantage of in different ways helps keep the area fresh and vibrant.

It’s one of the most incredible spots around and having a multi-use building

success or financial failures of other museums that may have garnered more interest and support, or the reverse of that?

I believe most taxpayers would like a museum to preserve the past, but they also have the concerns that they alone will be held responsible for all operating costs because the admission ticket sales is not sufficient

that preserves the history of the Shipyards at the bottom of the mountains, on the ocean, with a breathtaking view of the city is like none other.

I feel our younger generation wants to see the space used by different groups to celebrate and continue to bring the community together as happens with the various markets throughout the year.

When people and groups get creative with a blank canvas such as the Pipe Shop, the opportunities are endless. The bottom line doesn’t hurt the city either.

INQUIRING REPORTER: Do you miss the penny?

Three years ago this week our pockets became lighter as the Royal Canadian Mint stopped producing the penny. While it now costs an extra four cents to obtain good fortune from a wishing pond, all in all it seems most people don’t miss the penny. First minted in 1858 and primarily made of copper, it costs more to make it than it’s worth. Phasing out the penny has also forced us to do some extra math, rounding purchases to the nearest five cents. We asked people on the street: Do you miss the penny?

Assistant chief Dave Burgess said the call came in around 3 a.m. from the owner of a home on the 900-block of Forest Hill Drive.

“The smoke alarm

activated. He closed the door, phoned 9-1-1 and was directed to leave the building, which he did. Shortly thereafter we arrived,” Burgess said.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from outside and quickly put out the flames.

The home’s structure remains sound, Burgess said, though it did sustain heavy smoke damage.

Fire investigators remained on the scene Thursday, looking to determine how it started.

Youth aid Syrian refugee families

The group of North Shore united churches organizing a drive to assemble welcome kits for Syrian refugees has added some urgently needed items to its donation list: baby diapers and formula.

Operation Fresh Start has been collecting cleaning and hygiene products for the new immigrants. In December, North Shore youth gathered and sorted items to create 49 individual care packages to Syrian refugee families.

Mary-Sue Atkinson of St. David’s United Church in West Vancouver, one of the organizers of the program, said she recently learned

that in addition to the other items they’ve been collecting from local residents there was also an urgent need for diapers and baby formula.

Atkinson said that she’s heard that the Syrian families who’ve already arrived in B.C. have been grateful for the care boxes, which included hand-written welcome letters from youth volunteers. The group partnered with Mosaic, a non-profit organization that helps immigrants and refugees settle, to distribute the packages. The recent influx of government-sponsored refugees has caused organizers to shift their focus, however. Youth continue to

The week of Feb. 15 is going to be a doozy for CubanCanadian artist Alex Cuba.

Not only will he attend the 58th Annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., having received his second Grammy nomination (this time around in the category of Best Latin Pop Album for his 2015 record Healer), two days later the Smithers-based singer-songwriter will head to his native Cuba to serve as host of a documentary project exploring emerging music in the country.

All this excitement is set to fall smack dab in the middle of his

mainly Western Canadian tour, launched last month and bringing Cuba to West Vancouver’s Kay Meek Centre Saturday night for a sold-out performance. The artist is scheduled to remain on the road through March (with dates also in Ontario and Quebec) and on April 3 he’ll head to Calgary for the Juno Awards as Healer has also been nominated for World Music Album of the Year.

Cuba is no stranger to award nods, for example, he recently received a Latin Grammy (bringing his career total to four), for Best Singer-Songwriter Album, and also has two Junos to his name; however, being honoured is always exciting and something he’s grateful for.

“Each album that I manage to put out is to me a new chapter and if that new chapter gets recognized again, that’s cool,” he says, reached Monday from the road.

His current tour, bringing him close to home, has been longawaited and he’s pleased with the response from fans.

“It’s been going amazing. We’ve been having an amazing tour

so far. Beautiful,” he says.

Joining him on the road are fellow Smithers residents, drummer Jake Jenne and bassist Ian Olmstead, in addition to Cuban-Canadian percussionist Jose Sanchez.

For his latest recording project, Cuba chose to stay in North America, working in Victoria and New York, rather than travel to Cuba as he had for previous releases.

“It’s a more soulful album,” he says of Healer, focused on songwriting and sounds. While maybe overall, “it’s slightly different,” than his previous efforts, he still thinks it, “continues on what we’ve been building on.”

Healer features duets with five singer-songwriters, including Canada’s Ron Sexsmith, David Myles, Alejandra Ribera and Kuba Oms as well Anya Marina, from New York.

Two brothers, two farms, and a shared road linking both. But the brothers haven’t shared a word in 40 years.

It’s an intriguing premise, brought forth by writerdirector Grumur Hakonarson, especially given the isolated Icelandic valley in which the bachelor brothers reside.

When the men must communicate, they use a sheepdog to pass notes from one to the other. Did they row over a woman? Economics? Or was it one of the yearly town competitions for Best Ram that started the feud?

In Eurydice, American playwright Sarah Ruhl refreshes an ancient Greek myth with a modern setting and a change of perspective.

The original tale of Orpheus and Eurydice follows legendary musician and poet Orpheus in his quest to retrieve his beloved wife from the underworld, but Ruhl’s 2003 work imagines the tragic love story from the point of view of the lesser-known mythological figure, Eurydice, and brings the characters into the 20th century.

“This is a contemporary retelling of the Orpheus myth,” says North Vancouver resident Daniel Curalli, a second year BFA student who is playing Orpheus in UBC Theatre’s production of

Eurydice. “This one is modernized, set in an ambiguous period between the 1920s and 1950s, and the cool thing about this story is that it takes the myth and kind of flips it on its head.”

Directed by second-year MFA directing candidate Keltie Forsyth, the play follows its titular character (played by Curalli’s fellow BFA student Kelsey Ranshaw) who has died and

entered the underworld.

“We all know what happens to Orpheus, but what happens to Eurydice, who’s his wife, while she’s waiting?”

In keeping with its

origins, the play maintains the existence of an underworld that humans can enter freely, but the costumes, sets and use of language suggest modern times. Ruhl also made several changes to the original storyline, including the introduction of a new character, Eurydice’s father.

Ruhl actually wrote Eurydice in honour of her own dad, who died of cancer in 1994 when she was 20 years old.

In her play, Eurydice meets her long-deceased father in the underworld and, as she has lost her memory, he tries to teach her about her past.

“He tells Eurydice a lot of stories that we know (Ruhl’s) father told her, and these are stories that she would have heard from her father and that she’s put into the script as kind of a memorial of him,” Curalli explains.

At the crux of the story is Eurydice’s struggle to choose whether to return to the land of the living or remain in the underworld.

“She has to make the decision at the end about whether she wants to stay with the father or whether she wants to go back with her husband and that leads to the climactic moment in

Have harmonica, will travel — that is essentially North Vancouver musician Keith Bennett’s mantra.

Ever since his father’s prized Hohner harmonica was handed down to Bennett as a teen, he hasn’t put down the diminutive instrument with the distinctive sound.

“I grew up in Deep Cove and in those days they didn’t have a lot of buses so I would hitchhike to school and play harmonica waiting for cars,” Guitarist David Sinclair and harmonica man Keith Bennett join forces for a concert at recalls Bennett.

A routine closet purge led to an innovative business idea for friends Ellie Robinson and Tracey Gauvin.

The creative pair, who met as students in the costuming for stage and screen program at Capilano University, cleared out a bunch of T-shirts that hadn’t been worn in ages – but they didn’t want to throw them in the trash. Both handy with a sewing machine, they decided to turn their discarded tops into something new.

“It was just a way to use old T-shirts that we loved – maybe they were too small, maybe they had a hole in them, and we just didn’t want to get rid of them – and so we decided to reinvent them into pillows or scarves or headbands and things like that,” says Robinson, a North Vancouver resident.

In December 2009, Robinson and Gauvin launched Tee Cycle Depot, an online Etsy shop where they sold their handmade creations. Gently used T-shirts with a logo, an ironic saying, or band tour dates all had excellent upcyling potential, but the crafters soon expanded their materials to include salvaged fabric scraps and

When Robinson and

Gauvin started working full-time, they had to put their Etsy shop on hiatus.

Now that they are both comfortable in their careers, they’re hoping to relaunch Tee Cycle Depot with a renewed energy in the late

spring or early summer. To help her prepare for the re-opening, Robinson is enrolled in Etsy Resolution, a free online mentorship program designed to inspire entrepreneurs. It kicked off Jan. 25 and goes for

four weeks. The program launched in Australia last year and is now running for the first time in Canada as well as France, Germany, Japan, Australia and the U.K. Registered participants can get advice, lessons and tips

on opening their own Etsy shop.

So it really just takes them through the process and it’s also led by mentors who are actual Etsy sellers,” explains Erin Green, managing director of Etsy Canada.

The Canadian mentors include lingerie designer Mary Young, stationery designer Erin Leroux, skirt and bag designer Mo Handahu, and vintage store owner Amy Honey.

“We chose people who have seen successes on Etsy, but are also willing to share the trials and tribulations and the challenges that bubble up for new makers,” says Green.

In addition to receiving course material and homework assignments, a dedicated Facebook group connects the participants and allows them to share their progress, ask questions and get feedback.

“The community is really running this program, all

Robinson has especially liked the sense of community she feels as a member of the Etsy Resolution Facebook group.

They say timing is everything, and 2016 is looking good for Brandon Wolfe Scott so far.

The local musician is beaming as he’s couched with an afternoon Americano at an off-Main coffee shop, and for good reason: two years after tracking The Postcard Writer, a collection of tear-in-yourbeer-style country tunes, his first-ever solo record is finally about to hit stores.

He also hits the road this month, but here’s the thing: the tour’s not in support of his solo set, but rather with his well-travelled, full-time indie rock project, Yukon Blonde.

Judging by the genuine smile stretching across the bespectacled songwriter’s lightly bearded face, he’s taking the scheduling snafu in stride.

In a weird way, it’s kind of a nice outlet to do something, but I don’t

know how much time I’m going to have to focus on it.

I’m glad it’s getting out there, which is nice.”

While eager to link up with his backup players at some point, the relaxed approach

makes sense. He admits, for instance, that some of these songs have been rattling around in his repertoire for the better part of a decade.

of Dusty Summers, an alter ego that initially had him handling cattle rustlin’ C&W with a humorously booming baritone.

“In between tours I would be writing these funny little

country songs for my friends, just for them to hear,” he explains. “I think it was a nice way of putting on a mask.

I don’t feel self-conscious showing songs to people that way, where I put on a real low voice. I showed a couple friends, and they were just like, ‘Dude, you should just do these songs.’”

Though Scott cites influences like Sons of the Pioneers and Glen Campbell, whom he’d listen to as a youth with his mouth harp-playing grandfather, he knew he’d have to tone down his jokey impression of the genre if he were to play from the heart. Notching his vocals up an octave into his natural range helped too.

“I had some pretty hokey lyrics going on,” Scott confesses, listing off titles to early tunes including country Christmas strummer, “Snow on My Stetson.”

“One was called ‘Rope and Ride.’ It’s about this guy who really wants this woman to keep up with his manliness, that kind of weird redneck mentality. I just changed them into polite love songs.”

Title tune examines life on the road From page 27 led Scott to booking a winter vacation at Zeus member Jason Haberman’s home studio in the Roncesvalle neighbourhood of Toronto, where they cleaned up the tunes that would become The Postcard Writer. Though lacking his regular bandmates, Scott was assisted by pedal steel player Matt Kelly (City & Colour), vocalist Carleigh Aikins (Bahamas) and more.

“I wanted to get away from everything,” Scott says of the EP’s musical direction. “I didn’t want loud, trashy rock and roll . . . I wanted it to be chill.”

Fittingly, The Postcard Writer is a pleasantly airy collection.

Intricate, back porch-approved acoustic guitars are plucked tenderly on tracks like the independence-seeking “Anymore,” and the wistful “Heartless.” “Sleepin’ By Your Side” is the record’s most overt nod to old time country, a slippery pedal steel supporting Scott’s melancholy, motel-locked narrative about longing for home.

The title track likewise examines life on the road, with Scott softly singing about how he’ll be dropping a thoughtful message in the mail for his lover. While the idea may seem antiquated to anyone firing off messages 24/7 on their smartphone, Scott explains that it’s one of the record’s most autobiographical tracks.

“That’s a total obsession I have. Every new place I go, I have to get a postcard for my girlfriend. We have hundreds on our wall. Getting something tangible in the mail is sort of a lost thing, these days. I always find it extra fun to do.”

With Yukon Blonde’s Canadian tour kicking off in just a couple of weeks, it seems like Scott’s girlfriend will be tacking up a few more romantic messages quite soon.

“They’re all people that I know and people that I like and people that we thought would sound great on the songs that we had. That’s basically what made us choose them, according to the songs. It was important to have them . . . (sing) something that they feel comfortable,” he says.

Cuba met Ribera through the project. “It was a quick connection and a fast connection. She loved the song from the beginning,” he says.

When working on the album Cuba came to realize the impact and role music continues to play in his life. “It’s been my medicine, my everything. I realized the healing powers of music,” he says, and sought to honour that through the project.

“Healer is what I call the very spirit of music,” Cuba posted online in November 2014 with a YouTube video teasing Healer’s then-pending release. “Where healers are conduits of energy that help people find solutions to problems and create a space for transformation, music also creates that space and is a doorway to other ways of seeing and feeling. I am inspired by the mystery and spirituality of these times, where it seems more necessary than ever to be a ‘Healer.’ I want to inspire all people with healing powers to believe in it and to do it, create the space in our minds to believe that we have the power of healing ourselves from whatever brings us down as human race,” he wrote.

While his latest album only came out last year, Cuba has already penned a number of new songs and is ready to head back into the studio. “The best 12, we make the album, that’s how I do it, as we go,” he says.

He’s also looking forward to the upcoming documentary project, The Cuban Bus, an initiative of Toronto’s Those Canadians Media Group. “It’s exciting because it’s going to be 10 days of discovering new music, meeting people, jamming with them,” he says.

Cuba is set to criss-cross the country with filmmakers in a bus that has been refurbished into a mobile recording studio in search of the next generation of Cuban musicians. Plans include releasing a documentary, a digital download music album, as well as online and mobile short clips in Spanish, French and English, according to the company on Vimeo. “Cuba has a long history of creativity and brilliant musicianship. And now, as the political tides change, a generation of young artists are eager to play their music and sing their songs for the outside world,” they write.

Cuba makes it home every few years. “Life is busy for me now.

It’s hard to go often. The cool thing about this is that I’m going to go to places I’ve never been to before. . . . It’s kind of exciting to see these places, towns I’ve never been to in the country that I was born,” he says.

Retelling the Orpheus and Eurydice myth from a different perspective adds a new dimension to the story and portrays Eurydice as far more complex than simply a captive in need of rescue.

“In the original myth, when you read it, Eurydice almost comes across as an object,” Curalli says. “In this one, we really get to see the human side of her and we really identify with her as being a person who’s making her own decisions and also has an incredible sense of agency.”

In preparing to take on the role of Orpheus, Curalli tapped into the music prodigy side of his character. Orpheus hears music constantly, Curalli explains, to the point that it pulls him away from the people around him, including his wife.

“In his relationship with Eurydice, it’s not that he does not love Eurydice, it’s that he hears music in his head that describes her so beautifully and so perfectly, but he can’t put it into words and it draws him away from her,” he says. “Finding that dimension to the character is interesting.”

Over the course of play, Orpheus learns to better express himself through words and develops from a boyish character into a mature grown up who loves selflessly.

“At the end, we get to a point where everyone realizes that to love is to want the best for the other person, and I think that that’s the beauty of the play and the beauty of the journey that Orpheus takes.”

the mid-19th century in Germany, which is home to the annual World Harmonica Festival. The event attracts thousands of harmonica players from around the world, including Bennett who has placed in the Top 10.

Closer to home Bennett has lent his harmonica talents to film and TV soundtracks including McGyver, Neon Rider, The Black Stallion and Sesame Street.

Canucks fans, meanwhile, may have caught Bennett, a.k.a.

“Harmonica Man” belting out the blues during home games for nearly a decade in the ’90s.

“I was usually at the top of the stairs in the lower section,” says Bennett, who would don a hat and play the part of a Blues Brother. “I would play for exactly one minute, it was during the commercial break.”

Bennett’s harmonica stylings were also featured in a soundtrack for the Calgary Stampede. It was through that opportunity that Bennett was asked to perform with Roger Hodgson of the rock band Supertramp on the harmonica-heavy tracks “Take the Long Way Home” and “School.”

On Saturday Bennett will join forces with Sinclair for an entertaining show at North Vancouver’s Presentation House Theatre, performing a repertoire that is a rootsy blend of jazz, blues, folk and pop.

“It’s an athletic event for me when I do a show with him,” says Bennett explaining how there is lot of breathing on his part. “It’s the only instrument that you are literally drawing air into your body, which is interesting. It’s a two-hour show, that’s a lot of harmonica.”

Juno-nominated singer-songwriter and guitarist Sinclair has played in bands with k.d. lang and Sarah McLachlan and recorded with Michael Bublé and Bryan Adams to name but four Canadian music greats Sinclair has collaborated with. When Bennett and Sinclair sync up in concert, anything goes.

“We do wacky stuff, a U2 version of “Only to Be with You” done in a Hungarian polka, Beethoven’s Fifth (symphony), some crazy blues stuff,” says Bennett.

When he’s not performing or recording, Bennett teaches a “Harmonica in a Day” seminar.

“They totally get how to play the blues and a chance to jam with everybody else,” explains Bennett of the great fun his students have.

Design

To answer the growing demand from luxury car owners looking for a crossover SUV, the first-generation Acura RDX was introduced in 2007.

The original was followed by a significantly improved second generation in 2013.

Still sharing some platform with the Honda CR-V, the 2016 facelift shows only

subtle tweaks. The change mostly brings the RDX in line with Acura’s modern design language.

New jewel eye LED headlights sit either side of a revised three-dimensional grille. Further livening up the package are new LED taillights, which reflect Acura’s current signature look.

Likewise, the interior receives a few revisions to make the RDX feel like the rest

of the Acura family. The highcontrast silver and black trim is classy and understated, and many premium features are standard.

The RDX is available in three trim levels. After the base, Tech is the next step up, with Elite topping the range.

In an official statement this week, Toyota indicated that their youth-oriented subbrand would be “transitioning back to Toyota.” In other words, they’ll be chiselling off the badges down at the dock: the experiment is officially over.

evolutionary changes continues under the hood of the RDX as well. While the 3.5-litre V-6 is new, horsepower is only up six, and torque is up one foot-pound.

However, while these increases are only incremental, Acura claims the power is delivered more efficiently thanks to a better torque spread. The max 279 h.p. arrives at 6,200 r.p.m. and the RDX hits its peak 252 foot-pounds of torque at 4,900 r.p.m.

Despite not being a member of Honda’s praised Earth Dreams family, the V-6 in the RDX is smooth and refined.

It also has a luxurious muted note, and new engine mounts further reduce noise, vibration and harshness.

While all these changes are nice, it never feels sporty, especially compared to its V-6 powered rivals which offer more muscle and performance.

To be fair, the RDX is only available as a V-6, whereas it is a rather costly option with its competitors. Compared to four-cylinder models, the RDX easily has them beat.

To make driving the RDX even smoother, the six-speed

automatic prioritizes comfort over speed. A manual mode uses steering wheel paddle shifters if you prefer to be more in change.

In Canada, the RDX is only available in all-wheel drive with Intelligent Control.

The system has been tuned for more rear torque bias to enhance dynamic stability and all-weather performance.

While the RDX is nimble around town, where it truly shines is on the highway. Not only is it quiet, but advanced driver-assist technologies like adaptive cruise control, collision warning and mitigation, lane-keeping assist and departure warning, and blind-spot warning offer peace of mind.

I only wished that the steering provided more road feel and heavier character – the overall feel is so light and numb that it doesn’t translate what’s happening underneath the car. In this regard, the German competitors (especially the Audi Q5) do a much better job.

Environment

There’s a lot to like about the cabin of the RDX. Material quality is excellent, and while plastics are everywhere obviously, they are soft to the touch and fit is typical Honda.

Problem No. 1: youth don’t have money

good, but that wasn’t the problem.

Take the iM hatchback, the most recent Scion product I drove. After having a chance to punt the little car around Calgary, I found it full of features to recommend. It was reasonably stylish. It had good storage. You could get it with a manual option if you wanted.

And, best of all, it was actually a Toyota product.

That means decent reliability, good resale, and a relatively hassle-free dealership experience. Maybe the suspension was a tad on the harsh side, but the iM made for a strong contender. My only real issue with the car was the Scion badge up front.

And now, praise be, you’ll be able to get an iM without the Scion badging. If you’re lucky, they’ll even bring it back as the Matrix again.

For people who loved the Corolla but wanted hatchback flexibility, this is excellent news. Because of Scion’s single-model pricing program, the iM’s sport-tuned suspension was a little too firm for mature buyers, many of whom liked the Matrix for its practical side. At the product launch, I wondered aloud if

the iM wouldn’t do well as a softened Toyota product, but the parent company didn’t want the overlap.

But now the iM will be back as a Toyota, and maybe they’ll find room to offer it with hubcaps and soft suspension for baby boomers and big wheels and big stereo for the younger crowd. More choice is never a bad thing.

The idea behind Scion wasn’t a bad one. Toyota is not known as an exciting brand, offering instead reliability and resale. Thus, the brand found itself skewing older in buyer age, and wondered what they might do to capture the youth market. If Lexus was the luxury competitor, then surely a brand focused on youth would do just as well.

Initially, Scion did pretty well. The homely little xB did well in the United States, being cheap, fun-to-drive, and practical. Scion’s financing was pretty straightforward, with good deals for students. And yet, as time dragged on, sales flagged, then stalled.

Among other things, the problem was one of perception. The mythical youth buyer is largely a figment of some marketer’s imagination: you know who doesn’t have any money? Young people.

They’re too busy trying to

break into the housing market, or spending it on having an actual lifestyle to be worried about lifestyle brands.

If there’s a presumption to luxury, then the luxury brands are leasing for relatively affordable rates. If there’s a desire for stability, then namebrand safety is looked for.

So, if you’re in your 20s and looking for your first new car, what do you do? You talk to your parents, and maybe they help you out with the down payment. Tell them you’re buying a Scion and Dad scratches his head. Tell them you think a four-cylinder Toyota would do the trick and Mom nods approvingly. Then they buy you a 15-year-old Corolla instead.

The thing is, regardless of age, consumers all want the same things from their automobile at a base level.

They want to not lose money on it. They want it to get them where they’re going. They don’t want to have to worry too much about maintenance and breakdowns. These are all Toyota strengths, whether in fact, or just in consumer perception. Toyota has worked hard to trumpet its reputation for reliability, so why is it wasting its time trying to create a whole new brand to support.

While the RDX works well generally, its rivals are sportier. The RDX lacks performance characteristics.

The bottom line

If you want a comfortable, smooth-as-a-silk crossover SUV, give the 2016 Acura RDX a chance.

Competitors Lexus RX

In the luxury crossover segment, the Lexus RX is the benchmark in terms of reliability, versatility and comfort.

On top of this, the RX stands

out for its intelligent use of space and cargo capacity. The RX is all new this year.

The base model RX 350 starts at $53,950, while the fuel-efficient RX 450h can be had for $68,550.

BMW X3

The X3 stands out for its dynamic driving nature and feels more like a sport sedan than an SUV. BMW offers several engine options, including a fuel-efficient diesel.
