Caregiver and Senior Expo returns to NorthVancouver

Contributing writer

The expo had to take a hiatus due to COVID-19, but caregivers certainly did not.

The fifth annual Caregiver and Senior Expo is returning to North Vancouver this year for the first live event since

2019, providing an opportunity for people to learn more about how to support friends and family who require a little assistance

The title of caregiver is so versatile that it cannot be narrowed down to any one role or one profession, said Vic Gailiunas, caregiver support co-ordinator with North Shore Community Resources.

The expo will host four guest speakers that will talk about some of the different aspects of being a caregiver

May is CAREGIVER
“A lot of times people don’t always recognize themselves as caregivers, but in fact, a lot of us are in those roles.”

“We could have probably had eight and still had room for other angles on it But I do think that the array of people we’ve got will do very well,”

Gailiunas said

Chantal Bourke, a registered clinical counsellor who operates a therapeutic private practice on the North Shore, will be one of the guest speakers. One of the subjects Bourke will speak on is the emotional toll that being a caregiver can take, and how to increase the effectiveness of how caregivers support their loved ones “There’s a very particular skill that we’ll be teaching called being your loved one’s ‘emotion coach’ and helping caregivers learn how to do that and feel more capable in their own capacity with their emotions in their emotional connection to their loved one,” Bourke said

Caring for loved ones in need can present a learning curve for family

members The expo will also feature several exhibitors covering a wide range of important topics that come up in every family

Some of the exhibitors will include organizations from the field of will and estate services, private care facilities, funeral services, and pharmacies

The other guest speakers featured at the expo will include Amelia Gilies of the Alzheimer Society of BC, Stephanie Chan from Home to Home, and Nikki Brown from Vancouver Coastal Health.

“So many beautiful things can happen when somebody works on themselves and their healing, and it heals families and makes everybody healthier,”

Bourke said

The North Shore’s Original Home Care Company

Shylo Home Healthcare is a North Shore success story

The founder, Betty Brown, a nurse from West Vancouver, recognised the need for inhome care back in the 1970s when there was no government home support program or private Home Care agencies, so she formed Shylo Nursing Services Her original group of about a dozen RNs started serving clients on The North Shore but quickly grew to serve clients all over the Lower Mainland

Margot Ware initially contacted Shylo to help support her mother who was battling terminal cancer, and later her ageing grandfather Margot was fortunate to grow up in a

multigenerational family in West Vancouver with her mother and grandmother being RNs and her grandfather a renown Canadian surgeon Dr W G. Cosbie MD, OBGYN, FRCPC, RCP, LLD who was integral in the formation of

the Canadian Cancer Society

Margot grew up seeing her grandparents age gracefully and pass peacefully in their own beds—this obviously had an effect on Margot’s vocational aspirations

Margot was pleased to join the company that had supported her family for many years and work her way from a Companion in 1985 to buying the company as a Geriatric Specialist RN in 1998 where she proudly continues offering quality care to the citizens in our community

and managed by a local RN and offers clients a complementary intake assessment with one of our Geriatric Nurse Specialists. Our RNs visit our clients regularly to assess their evolving healthcare needs and are available 24-7 for support by phone for both our clients and caregivers all a complementary part of Shylo’s service

It is our honour and privilege to be trusted to care for you and your loved ones

As we often say at Shylo,“If you ’ re going to be in the nursing care business, we believe you really should be a nurse ”

Shylo continues to be the only Home Care agency that is owned

WAVE 98.3 Celebrates Community at the Caregivers and Seniors Expo

Music is an innately personal and preferential medium, but what if there were a way you could indulge in your favourite old-school vintage vibes while still keeping an ear to the ground - or, in this case, the radio waves - for today’s recent hits?

No It’s not some far-fetched radio fever dream. It’s WAVE 98.3! Featuring a diverse mix of smooth tunes, funky instrumentals, classic Motown and R&B, as well as hits from some of today’s biggest artists, WAVE 98.3 plays music everyone can enjoy

It’s a supportive, authentic connection that you can trust – delivered by personalities

you can trust, such as veteran Vancouver broadcaster Tara Jean Stevens, who hosts the morning show

WAVE 98.3 is proud to support events and initiatives on the North Shore with a signal reaching from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove and across greater Vancouver

“Community is everything to us. ” says Geoff Poulton, VP of Operations for WAVE 98.3.

“We’re proud to serve the neighborhoods where we live, work, play - and listen! So much of the great music we play has

been missing from the airwaves for many years We’re thrilled to be bringing it back in our own unique way ”

The radio station also has big plans for its first annual “Smooth Sounds of Summer Concert” July 29th at The Shipyards Four local vocal and instrumental musicians will bring their music to the Shipyards Stage for an afternoon of smooth grooving! Looking for a positive way to start your day? We respectfully suggest WAVE 98.3 - on air at 98.3 FM and online on your favourite streaming app and at www.wave983.fm.

Why A Support Group?

- In the Words of North Shore Caregiver Group Members

Emotional and practical support is needed now more than ever with the unpredictability and isolation of the last three years of COVID-19.

Caregiver shave the added stress of looking after loved ones and often feel frustrated, depressed, and alone. NSCR’s Caregiver Support groups offer a community of like-minded, caring people who understand each other’s struggles and often can offer new ways of thinking about things; or a new resource; or simply someone who’ll listen. Some have been caregiving for years; some are brand new to it. NSCR surveyed their group members and received the following answers to the question:

What was the most beneficial thing about participating in the program?

➡ “Participating helped me feel less isolated with my challenges - and reinforced positive coping skills Found the program - and the workshops very helpful while going through a challenging time I wish my fellow participants well with their journeys ”

(Caregiver Support Group member)

➡ “Learning that I am not alone in the challenges I face as a caregiver, that there are others out there just like me, and that they are having a hard time too. So if I feel like I’m having a hard time, it’s not because I’m not a good caregiver, it’s just life, and it’s okay”

(Caregiver Support Group member)

➡ “Learning from others is the most beneficial. There are many takeaways each month which I apply

to my life I also believe I’m at a time of my own experience in caregiving where I can share and give back I find purpose in all of us assisting group members who are in urgent or significant need There is wisdom in the group. Thanks Vic for the generosity you bring ”

(Caregiver Support Group member)

➡ “Social and reassuring as meeting others in similar situations, experiencing friendly, thoughtful peer caregivers and facilitators conversation and

suggestions Met many outstanding caregivers

All facilitators have been excellent, supportive and perhaps more than other agencies, have time to listen etc. Much appreciate also the volunteer coach I met, very good person of high integrity and knowledgeable ”

(Caregiver Support Group member)

➡ “In my experience joining the Bereavement Group, I know it’s a safe and supportive group where people, who have gone through the painful experience of loss, can share their stories and experiences and hopefully provide each other new opportunities to rebuild their lives ”

(Bereavement Group member)

➡ “I think it was really easy for me to jump in and speak my mind.

It helped me discuss my issues and people listened ”

(Bereavement Group member)

➡ “Meeting & hearing from others who are caregivers Though the individual circumstances of each caregiver & caregiving situation is unique, we are common in that we are providing care & emotional support to our loved ones.

Listening to the difficulties and experiences of other caregivers gives me insight into my own caregiving journey, as well as making me aware that I’m “not alone” in the ‘difficult task’ of being a caregiver Also, my experience & support may be of benefit to others (so it’s both an opportunity to unburden ourselves of our difficulties, while benefiting from others. A good support group & venue for caregivers).”

(Bereavement Group member)

“Thank you so much for taking care of everyone that is on a difficult journey You always make us feel connected to each other’s lives. I personally feel part of a new caring family and with your amazing support and enthusiasm my healing process is working good ”

(Bereavement Group member)

➡ “Opportunities to meet with others and share information and ideas about senior and health/medical issues and challenges Great support from staff re: services and facility.”

(Men’s Group member)

Supporting the Difficult Caregiving Journey

A first memory that my husband, Peter, may be having difficulty was seeing him absorbed in financials for a new product for his business, and he was struggling with the numbers. This seemed strange since Peter was known for having strong financial skills

He had been an entrepreneur for 20 years at this time Fortunately, we were referred to the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at UBC The diagnosis in 2012 was FTD, Primary Progressive Aphasia, Semantic type, a dementia impacting loss of language, difficulty communicating and understanding, ability to make sound decisions, comprehension and often movement and behaviour.

Throughout this journey I have found tremendous value being with other caregivers facing similar issues.

I became aware of NSCR and their care support programs through the various correspondence I receive on dementia and was impressed by their overall vision and mission

I joined NSCR’s Caregiver Support Program for this reason and receive advice and understanding with respect and no judgement A takeaway from one meeting was the slogan “meet them where they are”, (now hanging in my kitchen) to remind me of Peter’s condition and where we are today. At our meetings I feel I can say anything, ask anything and will receive the wisdom I need to move forward through the difficult stages While I read articles and blogs on Peter’s dementia which are helpful technically, for myself it is the relationships with peers and care received at NSCR which are most meaningful
