As inflationcoolsand interestrates trend lower, many Canadiansstillfeel financially and emotionally strained due tothecumulativeimpact of inflationandhighborrowing costs. Foryoungergenerations, particularly thosebornafter 1990, thecurrent high cost of livingisunprecedented. Forolder Canadians whorecall the economic pressures of the70sand 80s, itis adistant memorythey hopedthey wouldneversee again.

While recentlower inflation andfalling interestrates arewelcome,Canadians aredemanding fromtheirpolitical leaders asense of realurgency inthe developmentofsolutions thatwill accelerate progress onaffordability and the economy.

It’snot enough to point tothe fact that Canada’seconomic conditions compare well with other countries andare set to improve. Our political leaders need tocommunicatetheir plans to address long-term affordabilityand economic sustainabilityclearly and forthrightly.

Structuralaffordability

This federalgovernment has been and will continue to worktoensure weare creating“structuralaffordability”–a modelof economic governance that aims to preventpeoplefromfalling below acertain economiclevel, and providesopportunitiesto improvetheir lotinlife.

Criticallyimportant measures inthis regard, such as theCanada Child Benefit,$10/daychildcare, dentalcare andpharmacare, plus significantand innovativeinvestments in affordable housing, arenow establishedandbeing implemented.

Evolvinggeopoliticsand theexistential threatofclimatechangearedriving allmajor economiestowards more proactiveindustrialpoliciesaimed at enhancingnational security andseizing

the economicopportunities of alowcarbon future.

Thisfederal governmentand I-in my role as Canada’sMinister of Energy andNatural Resources –are implementing ambitiousplansto grow aprosperous, low-carboneconomy, buildingon Canada’sexisting and potentialcomparative advantages in areas including critical minerals, hydrogen, biofuels, batteries, electric vehicles, carboncapture, renewables, nucleartechnology,AI, biotechnology, and more.

Governmentscaneither actas strategic catalysts for economicdevelopment orthey canrely ondiscredited and increasingly irrelevantsupply-side economics. We, andall ourG7allies, have chosen theproactivepath.

Stoking anger rather than solutions

In virtually all western democracies, the cost-of-livingcrisis hasgenerateda wave of concern, and often anger, that is challenging incumbent governments. Wesee thisinthe UK, in France, in Germany, inthe US and elsewhere.

And inthis context, wearewitnessing the emergence ofpoliticians who call themselves populists and whoseek to gain politicaladvantage by stoking anger -offering patslogans butlittlein the way of actualsolutions.

Longterm affordability anda sustainable and prosperouseconomy forthefuturearecritically important issues onthe mindsof most North Vancouverites. We shouldexpect all our majorpoliticalleaderstospeak clearly abouthow, ifelected, they intendto substantively addressthese matters.

Canadiansshould demandcandid, forthright conversations ontheseissues inthe coming months.
