After 96years of livinglifetothe fullest,JeanCronk of North Vancouverpassed awaypeacefully onJanuary 1st at Lions GateHospital. Her checklist was complete, including hosting 10 peoplefor dinnerinDecember, where she hadso much fun, andcelebrating one last birthday on Christmas Day,surrounded by what meantthe mosttoher -family.

She is survived by herhusband, John; her children,Diane, James, andRob;and hergrandchildren, Connor,Dylan, Graydon, Justin, Griffin,Hudson, Kristy, and Aiden, all ofwhomwereable tospendvaluabletime with her over the holidays.

BornNina JeanWebbonDecember25th,1928, in Grandview,Manitoba,Jean wasthe beloveddaughter of Alfred andNina Webband the co-mischiefmaker alongside her sister,Lila(March 2024), andbrother,Jack (August 2013).Her father wasalawyer, soherearly lifeincluded private schooling andatouchof “small-town”privilege. She grew upin aloving home that often hosted gatherings filled withmusic, food, and friends.

Jeanwas agrade-Astudent and ahardworker. After graduating high school, she tookevening and weekendclassesto earn her Secretarial Certificatefrom Duffus BusinessCollege, which led to many fascinating roles. These included livingin Englandand working for areclusive diamond merchant thattook her to exotic destinations.Oneofherfavouritejobs wasasan Executive Secretaryatthe North VancouverSchool Board (1977-1994), whereshe wasalso the unofficial social directorandmet manywonderfulfriends. Retirementwas not in her vocabulary. AfterleavingtheNVSB,shesold Weekender clothing and oftenearned the Top Salesperson award.

On June25th, 1960,Jeanmet thelove of her life at, not surprisingly, aparty. Sevenyearsherjunior,Jeanwasdeeplydevoted toJohn(whomshe lovingly called her“toy boy”), and they enjoyed awonderful64years together (or, as she jokinglydescribedit, “heaven and hell”). They built alife rich with quality friends, wonderfulhobbies suchasskiing andboating, tripsto Mexico, andoutings to Theatre Under The Starswith the entire Cronkclan.Through it all, theirlife was filled withhumour.

Jeanwasinseparable from her dogs,Scooter and Buddy, bothof whom she outlived(to sayherlove for her dogs was equal tothat for her familymembers mightbean understatement). She particularly loved her 20years in Nanaimowith aspectacular oceanview butwas thrilledto returntoLowerLonsdale forher final twoyears.Sittingonher patio, wine glass inhand, watching the boatsinthe harbour, andknowingherkids were just minutesawaybroughther greatjoy.

Anyonewho metJean would not soonforgether. She willberememberedfor manythings:herloveofa good martini, her disappointment at not being the “last toleave” aparty, her Triple-A personalitythat ensuredeverything gotdone, her quick wit,and herunabashed pride in her children. She wasapainter, pianist, performer, and, above all,an incrediblytalented poet whocouldcomposeone in minutes upon request.

InMay 2010,while feeling“under the weather,”she wrote:

If Ishoulddiebefore IwakeNo wailing, nohowling, for heaven’ssake! I’llbe transcending mysoulsomewhere“upthere,” Trying to findacomfortablechair! Don’tgrievefor me, please;I’vehad sucha life, Loving, laughing, with afew tears of strife. 50 trampoline years together, Nothing agood marriagecannotweather. So have amartini for little ol’ me, Remember, what isto bewillbe!

Assomeonewholivedinthe moment, Jeanwould want everyonetocelebrate herlifeand not mournher passing.Restassured -shehad agreatride!

Aprivatecelebrationoflifewill beheld in North Vancouver in thecoming weeks.PleaseRSVP to james@cronkgroup.com.

In lieuof flowers, thefamily kindly requestsdonations to acharity of yourchoice.
