Günther Herbig divides his activities today between Europe, North America and the Far East in a career that has been equally distinguished on all three continents.

Herbig's musical training took place in Central Europe where he studied with Hermann Abendroth, Herbert von Karajan and Hermann Scherchen. In 1972 he was named General Music Director of the Dresden Philharmonic and held the same post with the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin from 1977 to 1983.

In Western Europe Herbig became Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in 1979 and was soon invited to conduct such major ensembles as the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic London, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, the Residentie Orkest in The Hague and the Israel Philharmonic. In 1984 Herbig moved to the United States and served for ten years as Music Director of the Detroit and later the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has since conducted the orchestras of New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles among numerous others. He has toured the US several times with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and in 1989 conducted the orchestra on a European tour. 1991 he led the Toronto Symphony to Europe after having toured with them extensively in the USA, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan.

Herbig has recorded more than 120 works, including cycles of Haydn and Brahms symphonies. His releases include

As Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, he recorded between 2001 and 2006 several symphonies of Bruckner and Shostakovich. He has been the Conductor Laureate of the Taiwan Philharmonic since 2010.

法蘭茲．舒伯特：第六號交響曲 法蘭茲•舒伯特（Franz Schubert, 1797-1828） 是奧地利作曲家，屬古典主義後期及浪漫主義早期 的音樂家，與貝多芬同為繼承古典主義又開創浪漫 主義的先驅。舒伯特出生於貧困的家庭，音樂啟蒙 於身為教師的父親，後師從著名的宮廷樂長薩里埃 耶（Antonio Salieri）。他從小接觸了莫札特、海頓 與貝多芬的創作，尤其崇拜貝多芬。 當時著名的作曲家多是優秀的演奏家且積極地 自我推銷；舒伯特雖然出生成長於維也納，一生短 短的31年中也寫作了大量的樂曲，然而，由於不 擅長演奏又生性害羞，偶而從演出及教學賺取微薄 的收入之外，多須仰賴委託創作與樂譜版權費，經 濟狀況極不穩定，經常需要朋友接濟。他在世時作 品並未受到應有的重視，一直到他過世後才漸漸得 到國際關注，可說是生命短又不得志。他創作了包 含《魔王》、《野玫瑰》、《鱒魚》等六百多首歌 曲，有「歌曲之王」之稱。他也寫了多部歌劇及多 首管絃樂、室內樂、獨奏作品。共十首的交響曲 中，最知名的就是《未完成交響曲》與《偉大交響 曲》。這十首在舒伯特過世之前都不曾被出版，也 不曾被演出。 舒伯特的第六號交響曲寫於1817至1818年間， 1828年首演於維也納，為了與同是C大調的《偉大 交響曲》區隔，此曲亦被稱為小C大調交響曲。在 此之前的五首交響曲屬於他早期的作品，寫於16 至19歲之間，可以看得出承襲自十八世紀古典主 義的傳統；第六號交響曲除了受到海頓、貝多芬的

影響，當時正風靡維也納樂壇的義大利作曲家羅西 尼，也是舒伯特仿效的對象，他甚至在寫作此曲期 間，另創作了兩首「義大利風格」的序曲。第六號 交響曲於舒伯特過世後的一個月後在維也納首演， 是他第一首被公開演出的交響曲。 第六號交響曲共有四個樂章：第一樂章開頭的 C大調「慢板」樂段中規整的和弦具莊嚴之感，與 貝多芬的音響處理相似，緊接著的「快板」樂段則 輕快又富流動性，承襲海頓風格；第二樂章為F 大 調的「行板」，旋律十分優雅抒情，保有莫札特式 的清晰與流暢之外，和聲進行的轉折更是有著許多 驚喜；第三樂章開頭為一詼諧曲，C大調，三拍子 的急板一樣帶著輕快的曲風，中段的「甚緩板」突 然轉到E大調，其中亦有多處和聲轉換的驚喜，持 續帶給煥然一新之感；第四樂章為二拍子「有節制 的快板」，曲風清新明快且充滿生氣，不時可以聽 到絃樂與木管之間的對話，更可以看到舒伯特極為 細膩的配器手法。

安東．布魯克納：第三號交響曲(1873；1889修改) 安東•布魯克納（ Anton Bruckner, 18241896）是奧地利作曲家，作品手法承襲自海頓、莫 札特、貝多芬及舒伯特的維也納古典樂派，風格則 深受後浪漫樂派作曲家華格納的影響，是十九世紀 末浪漫樂派作曲巨擎之一。著名作品除了彌撒曲、 經文歌等宗教創作之外，尚有十一首交響曲。 自小即習得小提琴、鋼琴與管風琴，13歲進入 聖弗洛里安（Sankt Florian）的奧古斯丁修道院擔 任合唱歌手。父親與祖父都是教師，他於1841年

結束培訓後，也先後在多處任教。教職的工作始終無 法完全滿足他，他對音樂的熱愛，促使他於1845-1855 年在聖弗洛里安教學期間，經常演奏管風琴及研究其 文獻，成為知名的管風琴家，其即興功力更是廣為人 知。他從管風琴上汲取的演奏經驗，更成為日後寫作 交響曲時，建構宏大音響的手法之一。這座位於聖弗 洛里安的管風琴對他影響極深，甚至有「布魯克納管 風琴」（Bruckner Organ）之稱，而他最後也被安葬於 此管風琴之下。 他於 1855 年獲聘位於林茨的教堂管風琴手，除 了演奏之外也指揮及創作，終於開始他全職音樂家的 生活，當時他已31歲。接著，他先後與西蒙．席希特 （Simon Sechter）、奧托．基茲勒（Otto Kitzler）等人 學習音樂理論與作曲，並潛心研究華格納作品。縱使 到了31歲才開始接受專業的作曲訓練，他的作品越趨 成熟，最後於1868年獲聘任教於維也納大學。 若與同時期的作曲家如華格納等相比，布魯克納 的作品有著同樣寬廣深厚的音響、戲劇張力等浪漫樂 派的特質，但他為人卻有著極為謙遜又帶自卑的個 性。這樣的性格或多或少影響到他的創作，不僅使得 研究他的作品有著相當的難度，也成為他人批判的焦 點之一。其中最受人批評的，是他經常接受他人的建 議，重複並大幅度地修改作品；更令人訝異的是，他 的學生與出版商也曾為了方便演奏或使聽眾更接受他 的作品，而擅自修改他的樂譜。不可否認地，這樣不 僅造成同一首作品存在多種不同的版本的問題，另一 方面也令人質疑修改部分的原創性。有趣的是，即使 一再更新版本，布魯克納還是確保在身後，能將原稿 遺贈給維也納國家圖書館，以保存原稿的完整性。 除了大量修改作品遭質疑，他的創作風格也不幸 地受到愛德華．漢斯力克（Eduard Hanslick）等「反華 格納派」批評。當時的浪漫樂派分成「保守」（布拉 姆斯派）及「激進」（華格納派）兩派人馬：前者擁 護「絕對音樂」的悠久傳統；後者支持「標題音樂」 的創新。被視為「華格納擁護者」的布魯克納，在 1868年第一號交響曲首演後即遭受批判，稍後便因心 理障礙而療養了數個月。接著，獻給華格納的第三號 交響曲，在第一版（1873年）中雖大量引用了華格納 的素材，但縱使首演時所使用的「1877年版」除留有 一處引用之外，已移除了其餘的華格納素材，作品依 舊遭受嚴重的批評。而當時不擅指揮的布魯克納被迫 上台首演自己的創作，更是雪上加霜， 失敗的首演使 得他漸流失支持者。一直到了第七交響曲（1884）首 演後，他才重獲樂壇重視。 布魯克納的第三號交響曲曾經過多次的修改與 出版，至少存在了 1873 、 1877 、 1889 等多個版本。 1980年在林茨舉行的「布魯克納研討會」（Bruckner Symposium）中，曾針對第三號交響曲1889年版最後 一個樂章的原創性提出多項質疑。在出版 1889 年版 的前幾年，布魯克納正忙著完成第八號交響曲並著手 寫作第九號交響曲，就先將修改第三號交響曲的工作 交由學生兼助理的法蘭茲．沙爾克（Franz Schalk）處

Program Notes Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 6

It seems that Schubert's Symphony No. 6 in C major was written between October 1817, the date at the head of the manuscript, and February 1818, the date at the end of finale. This is the period of the two overtures in the Italian style, and it is not surprising that there are traces of Rossini in the symphony as well, coupled with the profounder influence of Beethoven. While the third symphony had to wait 66 years for its first performance, the sixth was apparently played for the first time at Otto Hatwig's in the year of its composition and was given a public performance by the Vienna Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde on 14th December 1828, the so-called 'Little' C major Symphony taking the place of the 'Great' C major Symphony, which was apparently too difficult.

The work is scored for an orchestra of similar composition to that used for the first three symphonies and again starts with a slow introduction, after which the flutes first take charge of the principal subject of the Allegretto.

Flutes and clarinets introduce the second subject and the central development, with its interplay between the wind instruments, has a false return to the first subject, before the original key is restored in the recapitulation.

The strings introduce the F major Andante, joined by flute and clarinet. There is a middle section of greater drama, with something more of Beethoven about it, and this is used to modify the original melodic material when it returns in the final section of the movement.

The spirit of Beethoven is heard again in the Scherzo, with its continuing skilful use of wind instruments and subtle shifts of key. The Trio, marked più lento, is in E

major, but brings its own surprises of harmony and mood, before the return of the Scherzo. The strings introduce the principal subject of the last movement, a return to Rossini in a movement rich in invention, with contrasts of material and keys before the eventual return of the first subject. © 2015 Naxos Digital Services Ltd

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 3

The rather superficial question conductor Otto Dessoff directed at Bruckner, who had submitted the first movement of his Symphony No. 0 to him: 'But where is the main tune?', had wonderful consequences: our composer used the same beginning in the strings as background for one of his greatest main tunes, the famous start of the Third Symphony (the trumpet call which Wagner admired so much). This enormous work (Bruckner's largest) underwent several 'improvements' by well-meaning students and also by the insecure master himself (the 1877 and 1888/89 versions are commonly played today, especially the latter).

Only in 1977, 103 years after its creation, was the original published by Leopold Nowak. It was fortunate that this original was preserved in the dedication copy to Wagner 'To the unreachable world-famous noble Master of Poetry and Music'.

A noble horn melody follows the trumpet call of the beginning. Two rhythmic outcries downward in the whole orchestra are answered softly by the strings; then the beginning returns. Afterwards the second violins play a gentle second melody. The whole orchestra in tones now a loud four-note phrase, replied to gently by strings and woodwind. A quotation from the Miserere of his D minor Mass concludes the exposition. The music in the development gradually increases in intensity and leads to a triple-forte tutti statement of the trumpets beginning.

The listener is led to believe it is the beginning of the recapitulation but this is not the case and the development continues: the tempo eases and Bruckner introduces his beloved contrary motion of the second theme and gradually leads to the true recapitulation. Here the slower lyrical theme sounds in D major. The coda once again in D minor begins softly with a canon of the main tune played by trumpets and trombones. After a big increase the music suddenly stops. Then the soft and slower answer to the outcries of the beginning leads to a mighty conclusion.

A gentle solemn melody in the strings starts the second movement, rather unusually a semitone above the main key. The violins increase in intensity and lead to one

of Bruckner's favorite cadences. The four horns gently introduce a new melody in the violas, a little faster and in triple time. Bruckner told us that he thought of his late mother when composing this Andante. The music slows down (misterioso) in the strings. Now the first violins embroider the viola (mother) motif leading to the initial Adagio in four with sixteenths (semiquavers) in the violas.

Yet once more the Andante appears in the cellos in triple time. The horns play the slower second tune. Then the beginning is repeated with extremely difficult syncopations in the first violins. Unexpectedly the full orchestra plays (fortissimo) the already mentioned Lohengrin motive still against the syncopation. The movement ends gently with the first melody.

The Scherzo contrasts six legato eighth-notes (quavers) in the second violins with three short eighth-notes in the basses, and increases to the loud rhythmical main tune.

The first violins follow with a lovely gentle melody, and the Scherzo ends in the major. The beautiful Trio in the same tempo starts with a beguiling viola tune. There are, as so often in his early Trios, some delightful modulations.

Several years after the symphony's original composition Bruckner actually appointed his beloved pupil Franz Schalk to almost recompose the last movement. But in spite of its extraordinary length the original is excellent. Not only did Schalk shorten the piece considerably but he and perhaps also his master changed the irregular patterns into regular four-bar groups (to its disadvantage) In the second section the composer contrasted the dance rhythm in the strings with the more serious half-note (minim) melody in horn and woodwind - a magnificent inspiration Years later when on a walk with one of his students, they passed preparations for the funeral of a famous architect with a dance entertainment nearby, and Bruckner said 'that is how I composed this second section of the Finale'.

After this, the second tune of the first movement, the Adagio of the second movement and the Scherzo receive short mentions. Also a syncopation in the strings contrasts with woodwind and brass. Founded in 1986, the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), also known as Taiwan Philharmonic, became the resident orchestra of the National Concert Hall, and an artistic affiliate of the National Performing Arts Center in April 2014. The orchestra has benefited from the leadership of many music directors and principal conductors, including Gerard Akoka, Urs Schneider, Tsang-Houei Hsu, Da-Shen Chang, Jahja Ling, Wen-Pin Chien and Güther Herbig. Since August 2010, Maestro ShaoChia Lü has been Music Director of NSO and will lead the NSO continually to further enrich its performances and carry out its mission as the flagship of classical ensemble in Taiwan. The NSO works regularly with internationally acclaimed musicians, including Lorin Maazel, K. Penderecki, Rudolf Barshai, Kek-Tjiang Lim, G. Schwarz, Uri Mayer, Joseph Silverstein, Leonard Slatkin, Christopher Hogwood, Christopher Poppen and many others. Tour performances were also regularly offered throughout Taiwan and in overseas, in places such as Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing.
