Spelling The magazine should be looked over to ensure proper spelling, including any names, locations or quotes used. There should be a sense of professionalism, so that there is consistency in the magazine. The correct
6
spelling should be referenced from the Encarta Dictionary for North America. Verb Tense The type of verb tense to be used in the magazine should be present tense. When displaying general information, facts or news stories, the writing should be strong and to the point. The voice that should be throughout the text and headlines should be an active voice. x Active: headlines of upcoming events require an active voice to make the text sound as if it is soon to occur. Example: qThis celebrity will celebrate her engagement at a hot new clubr x Passive: headlines of past news require a passive voice to understand the occurrence that happened. Example: q7KLV FHOHEULW\ MXVW FHOHEUDWHG KHU HQJDJHPHQW DW a hot new clubr Naming Conventions People® Magazine is a trademark and should always be capitalized. Date When the date is written out under a headline, you should use numerals in order as: month/date/year. When the date is written out in text, the date should be written in words for the month and numerals for the date and year.

Lists  Lists  are  a  great  way  to  display  large  quantities  of  information  in  an  easy  to  read  format  and  the  simplest  manner.  Bullet  lists  use  a  shape  at  the  beginning  of  each  point,  but  offer  no  obvious  order,  but  should  at  least  be  listed  from  points  of  high  importance  to  points  of  low  importance.  Numbered  lists  follow  the  same  structure  but  go  in  numerical  order.   All  lists  both  bulleted  and  numbered  should  have  the  same  tense  and  grammar  for  all  points,  the  first  letter  must  be  capitalized  and  have  a  period  at  the  end  point.   Punctuation  Punctuation  is  important  to  writing,  and  can  determine  the  effectiveness  of  headlines  and  articles  within  the  magazine.  A  period  always  ends  a  sentence,  and  should  even  be  used  after  a  parenthesis,  in  text.  In  headlines  the  parenthesis  can  end  the  statement.   x Use  an  apostrophe  to  denote  possession  x Use  brackets  for  nicknames  or  acting  names  for  celebrities.   x Use  commas  to  separate  ideas  in  series,  but  not  before  the  final  and  x Use  commas  to  depict  a  pause  in  a  headline  Â
8
x Use quotations marks for quotations, followed with a comma at the end of the quote, inside the ending quotation x Use a dash to separate a clause x Use a period to end a sentence, except not in headlines x Use a period after an abbreviation Sentence Length When writing a headline, the text should be short, where as in an article the sentence length varies. Short headlines make for a straight forward message to come across to readers. By using long headlines, you may create confusing as well as layout errors, due to the space the headline takes up. x Long Headline (Incorrect): The Celebrity Babies and How Their Mommies Battle It Out! x Short Headline (Correct): Baby Battles! Sentences used in text, can vary. It is more effective to use short sentences to create clarity to the reader. Information Used Throughout this Document The navigation for this style guide includes the Table of Contents, with each chapter clearly labelled, and the sub-sections that follow it. The table of contents provides a visual hierarchy for each chapter and information block. References

Chapter 3: Design Conventions
11
Applies to Common Look Headers Within the Magazine The headers of each page, not including any advertisement pages, should have a thin black line across the top. On a left hand page, the left corner should have the line underneath the title of the article, or above the section name. On a right hand page, the right corner should have the line underneath the title of the article or above the section name. Colour: According to colour of pictures within the article, the colour of the Headline text can be determined. Majority of headlines are red, for the every issue sections. Within the Style Guide The headers on each page of the style guide include a blue, black, pink and yellow striped top border. These colors can be found in the design conventions, under the table of colors. Footers Within the Magazine Left hand page has in the bottom left corner the page number in bold, size 8 followed by the word PEOPLE in size 10. Right hand page has in the bottom right corner the page number in bold, size 8 followed by the word PEOPLE in size 10.
12
There should not be any page numbering or footers on advertisement pages. Within the Style Guide The footers on the style guide include the revision number and the date of last revision in the first section of the style guide (the document name, and table of contents page). The pages with contents have a blue triangle tab, with white page numbers (the colors are found in the color table under the design conventions chapter)

Page Elements Front Cover The front cover consists of three (sometimes four) photos, and headlines for each photo. The cover story is the largest photo and has a yellow headline. The cover story photo takes the entire page, and has the title of the magazine; People®, in the background. Along with a huge yellow headline to capture the readers, there is a brief
Figure 3.1
description of the story in black
underneath the headline, left aligned. There are also 2 recent stories, whose pictures are aligned on the right side, with deep sky blue borders around them. They each have their own headline of yellow, with a 4 to 6 word description below in Ivory white. Refer to figure 3.1.
16
Page with just photos Pages in the magazine that is just for photos may have the pictures flood off of the magazine page, but must be separated with a white thick border. Where there is a main photo, then a zoomed up section of that photo must be surrounded by a white border as well. Each photos headline or description is written in a contrasting color to the photo and placed in any one of the corners, as long as the text does not cover the primary subject.
Figure 3.2
x Example: Figure 3.2 uses white text in contrast to the black background. Add a sense of style with a pink bubble. Article Page Pictures are positioned in the text in order to create a functional layout. The three column text is standard and the images are formatted around, within the article. There is usually a page of the article, dedicated to pictures relating to the article (see above Page with just Photos section). Refer to Figure 3.3 Figure 3.3

Chapter 4: Numbering Conventions
27
General Numbers Text Within text, numbers from zero to ten should be written in words. All other numbers should be written in numerals. Whenever there are numbers with more than three place holders, there should be a comma between each set of three numbers. x Example: There were 1,200 people who attended the event. Ordinal numbers (numbers written in sequence) should be written in words, unless it is a direct written quote. x Example: The best dressed who came in first, second and third ZKHUHf Numbers written at the beginning of a sentence should be written in words. x Example: Two hundred children were able to come wiWK WKHLU PRPpV to this gala. Numbers written in a sequence should always be written the same, starting with how the first number was written. x Example: Found in her purses, was 3 lipsticks, 15 pieces of gum, and 2 pens. Numbers written from a quote should be consistent throughout the quote and direct from the source of the quote. Date
28
When  the  date  is  written  out  in  under  a  headline,  you  should  use  numerals  in  order  as:  month/date/year.  When  the  date  is  written  out  in  text,  the  date  should  be  written  in  words  for  the  month  and  numerals  for  the  date  and  year.   x Example:   NEW  WEDDING  PHOTOS      03/12/2010  x Example:  2Q 0DUFK $VKOH\ DQG -RUGDQpV ZHGGLQJ WRRN SODFH  Time  When  time  is  written  out,  you  should  use  numerals.  x Example:  -DGHpV EDE\ ZDV ERUQ DW  12:10  a.m.  this  past  Saturday  afternoon.   Money  Money  should  be  written  in  numerals.  The  dollar  sign  should  always  be  before  the  number.  If  there  is  a  large  number,  the  numeral  followed  by  the  written  word  of  the  place  holder  should  follow.   x Example:   This  house,  owned  by  Julia  Roberts  costs  $6.8  million  dollars.       Â

Chapter 5: Documentation Release and Control
30
Document Release and Control Document release is controlled by the main office in the Rockefeller Center, New York. The main office determines all revisions, recipients and control of each magazine. 7KH PDJD]LQHpV FRQWHQW DQG IRUPDW DUH WDNHQ XS E\ WKH PDLQ RIILFH 7KH\ make precise, correct decisions while always updating information before publishing the final magazine to be sent out to the public. Factors that publishers and editors take account of in the revisions include: x Scope of the audience x Privacy of information used x Context x Background information. Document control includes: x The use of version numbers on magazines x Maintaining a history of the development of versions x The use of numbered copies of magazines and the revisions x Maintaining a list of recipients for distributed copies The recipients include all small corporations who sell People® Magazine, as well as subscribers (whether personally or business) that buy it for their own use.
