PRERNA

FROM THE PRINCIPAL It feels great to see the enthusiasm with which “National Service Scheme” has worked throughout the year. With the ingrained ideals to promote “Selfless Seva”, NSS has left no stone unturned to outshine in their mission and work for the upliftment of the society. Their hard work and courage to bring social and cultural transformation in our college students is reflected in their noble deeds, their awareness-spreading fests and their wing activities. As I go through this edition of Prerna and ponder over its sections, I realize how uniquely have the students interpreted different issues, giving a new meaning to inspiration-PRERNA. Their attempt to come up with different newsletters and an annual magazine keeps their selfless working spirit alive, voicing suggestions and solutions. The magazine is a balanced mix of both positive and negative sides of every theme they have worked on, offering it a unique tangent. Every article reflects a different thought process and proffers a new desire for hard work and self-confidence.

National Service Scheme has created its niche in consistency and determination of purpose. This appreciation steps in from the zeal and enthusiasm which the NSS volunteers have shown while organizing the primary college tasks and events, the admission procedure execution and the annual day celebration. Their selfless approach is not only a lesson for our students but also the entire society to step forward to initiate a change for the betterment of others. This team led under the able guidance of Dr. Nawang has worked diligently in inspiring our students and making them more socially oriented. Their efforts are sure to bear fruits of goodness for humanity in the days to come. I wish them all the best for their future endeavours! - PROF. SIMRIT KAUR

FROM THE PROGRAMME OFFICER I believe that education is not worthy enough if it is not able to bring an emotion for social welfare. In this today’s era of competitive and professional atmosphere, the purpose of the education is now more focused on individual success rather than on social welfare. The NSS is a platform where we try to develop this sense of welfare among the young minds through engaging themselves in social welfare activities. These involvements and community engagement programs help our youth to understand the various problems in the society and eventually this turns in to welfare policies as these young people are the future leaders / bureaucrats / managers and researchers etc. It’s my privilege to associate with the NSS unit of SRCC. Teaching and guiding the best minds of country is certainly a great feeling. I am proud enough to say that our volunteers are strictly following the NSS motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” and trying their best to bring positive changes around the society through different activities. The NSS unit of the college is most active student unit in and outside the campus; which starts from the first day of admissions and goes on till the last working day of the session. The credit for the success of unit also goes to its unique organizational structure having various wings. The way in which various activities are organized by any particular wing is really appreciable. Especially, every day involvement of volunteers in project “Sanskar” is something very commendable and I would like to mention that over the years there has been a significant development in the personality of kids from weaker section of the society just because of the thorough dedication of our volunteers. Therefore I can confidently say that contribution of our NSS volunteers is not only limited to some specific celebrations; rather it has now become their daily affair. I am sure that they all will continue to do the same throughout their lives. Apart from being the most active student group in the college, still there are some areas where we can do much more productive things. Although there is no doubt on the sincerity and dedication of volunteers but at the same time we are somewhere lacking in community engagement programs. I hope that in the times to come NSS unit of SRCC will reach more intensively among the people through some effective modes. I would also like to congratulate editorial team for bringing this new issue of “PRERNA”. At last my best wishes to all the volunteers for a great career ahead.

EDITOR’S NOTE Every journey is an amalgamation of thoughts, ideas, companionship and memories. The journey of being the Editor-in-Chief for National Service Scheme, Shri Ram College of Commerce was no different. Despite having worked in NSS for the last two years, I feel short of words to put down my experience with this family. The series of Pehal- ‘Safar’, ‘Maktub’ and ‘Seher’ were not mere newsletters but an entire journey of transforming thoughts to words and expressions to reality.

I was glad to have received the cooperation and unceasing support of the entire Team NSS Editorial, especially my co-editor Shiwani, in easing the vision with which I had taken up this responsibility. Team Editorial was in swing year round, making the release and execution of EPOCH-The Imprint possible. And now, as we come up with our last publication of the academic year 2017-18, I welcome all our readers to inspire and be inspired through PRERNA. NSS has given me a bunch of beautiful people to cherish memories with. From volunteers to team mates and now a family, this journey has transformed me immensely. My learning experience was never confined to Editorial but to the smiles of Sanskar Kids, to the ‘Gift Life’ Awareness, to the painted walls of the slum, to the boxes of collected books and medicines, to those donation and cleanliness drives, to SAMARPAN festivity and the memorable flash mob practices. Those meetings for fest discussion, event execution and birthday celebration will forever remain etched in my memory. It has been amazing to have had spent hours on seeking perfection before we could all relax and say, “It’s finally done!” As this baton of responsibility passes on, I thank the entire NSS team to have supported me throughout this delightful journey. A word of gratitude to our Principal Prof. Simrit Kaur and Programme Officer, Dr. Nawang, who have guided us throughout. Thanks to Harish Sir for helping us with the technicality of editorial publications. To the President, Adarsh and Vice-President, Anubhuti, thank you for providing us freedom and an excellent platform to showcase our thoughts and NSS Activities in an innovative style. To my juniors, I hope that you continue your endeavors in taking NSS to greater heights and spreading its vision of rendering Selfless Seva wherever you go. All the very best! - URJA RAHEJA

Being the NSS member gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment for the kind of work I did and the lessons I learned here, I would cherish each one of it throughout my lifetime. My journey in NSS is not confined only to the kind of work and experimentation in the editorial wing but the entire NSS unit. NSS truly is a selfless service unit which strives to serve the society in a possible manner NSS truly is a selfless service unit which strives to serve the society in a possible manner. This year NSS has calendered many proud moments and achievements naming few of them are the successful organization of Gift Life (two-day fest), Flashmob on various sensitive issues, Annual Fest- Samarpan etc. The Editorial wing has endeavored successful release of three newsletters this year (Safar, Maktub, and Sehar). Through our newsletter, we believe that we were able to communicate our message and vision to the different sections of society. We have also escalated our reach by the weekly Facebook post 'Epoch’. PRESIDENT’S NOTE Experience is the teaching of all things and every experience makes you grow. The past year has been a learning experience for me in so many unexpected ways. Most importantly, as the President you get to meet so many new people in such a short time. You get to know about so many lives and that grows within you and you realise no matter how much you do, its never going to be enough. However you can try and do as much as possible and I have made a similar attempt to do that. In the past year we have had blood donation camp, collection drive for the flood victims and celebrated teachers’ day for the first time in the college! This year we had a particular focus towards the health status in the society of the people. With respect with that we have had various workshops and sessions especially on cancer. The highlight of the first semester was the fest on ‘deceased organ donation’ to promote organ donation among youth. There were flash mob performances focusing on women empowerment where a rookie like me found an apt opportunity to shake a leg as well. Project Sanskar has been successfully running where we now plan to take a big step and expand our reach by recording videos of lessons in Hindi. Project Vishwas will soon see its formal registration. The team has worked tirelessly throughout the year and their contributions extend far beyond than what has been just mentioned. I would like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Nawang Gialchhen for being there with us at all times. I would like to thank our Principal Ma’am for her unending support and constant motivation. I thank our administration and the accounts department for being supportive to our cause. I cannot end this note without thinking of my team who put in their every effort to carry out each single task in the best manner possible. As this year is about to end I can only think about how much I am going to miss all of this and how this experience has made me a better person and more receptive of others. This edition of PRERNA not only amplifies the meaning of inspiration but give us a perfect overview to what is means to inspire and be inspired. I wish our readers a happy and enjoyable read and the following batch, luck for taking NSS SRCC to greater heights! -ADARSH KARIWAL

VICE-PRESIDENT’S NOTE Our annual magazine- Prerna is an amalgamation of not only our constant endeavours and efforts but also new ideas and a hope to witness a better society tomorrow. Every year this beautiful journey begins with a determined plan of action to contribute towards well being of people less privileged; and ends on a positive note to achieve greater heights sealed with a bundle of memories. NSS has become a part of my life so much so that it would be difficult to search for words to describe my experience. The smiles on those faces and blessings on those lips was the biggest motivation to continue the work we were doing. As Mahatma Gandhi rightly said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” It is definitely a two-way relationship. While helping others, you get to learn so much- about your own self, about the people around and most importantly, you learn those life skills that no textbook can ever teach you. You evolve as a better person learning to value people, respect their differences and align your personal goals with the common goals. And this definitely helps! We can’t survive for long without taking the society into consideration. After all, society is the biggest stakeholder in all our achievements as well as failures. Activities like self-defence workshops, visits to cancer institute, rehabilitation centres and conducting awareness sessions are a medium through which we wanted to highlight some grave issues, we as a community, need to deal on an immediate basis. Some things have been achieved but a lot needs to be done. Our women need to be stronger, our cities safer, our air cleaner, our development sustainable, our policies viable and our people educated and aware. Then only, our vision of ‘Incredible India’ could be a reality. All of us need to walk hand in hand to make our country a better place to live in. The journey has just begun, A lot more needs to be done The dream isn’t too far, Break the boundaries, break the bar. The leaves bloom, the flowers wither; Enough lived for self; Learn to live for others.

DISABILITY; NOT INABILITY “It’s not our disabilities; it’s our abilities that count!” - Chris Burke This famous quote by Chris burkes probably echoes the thought process of every person with a disability. Despite being vastly overlooked, the marginalization of the specially abled is one of the most important issues in the contemporary society. The specially abled are generally looked down upon, and more often than not, discriminated against. What people do not realize is that these people need the physical, emotional and financial support from the society, for their zeal to succeed in life is no less than ours. Recognizing that this was an issue that needed immediate attention, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) launched an initiative that sadly, didn’t get the appropriate amount of publicity it deserved. This was the “Accessible India Campaign”, launched in September 2015. The campaign is in line with the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and also comes under the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. The target was to make at least 50% of government buildings in state capitals as well as the national capital territory disabled friendly till May 2018 , and at least 25% of government run transportation vehicles disabled friendly till mid 2017. This was to be done through the building of ramps in public buildings, and adaptation of public toilets for wheelchair users. The scheme also proposed the use of Braille symbols and auditory signals in lifts and elevators, as well as easy to read and understand forms in Braille for the visually impaired. While much of the work under the scheme has been accomplished, there is still a long way to go before we can claim that the campaign has been capable of achieving what it set out to do. Nevertheless, it is a good start to make this world a better place to live in for the Divyangjan. - SHREYA SRIVASTAVA

BACK TO THE ROOTS The sub continent by all means is a land of diversity and a hub of cross cultures and beliefs. Ranging from cuisines to costumes; from festivals to language, it is truly a medley propagator and so are the health care opportunities that it safeguards profusely. This can be well established from the steps it has taken to preserve and propagate the indigenous systems of healthcare and work done towards its optimal development and proliferation. To administer the same it has a regulatory body established under The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India named as The Ministry of AYUSH. The term ‘AYUSH’ is an acronym deciphered below: A (Ayurveda): a system of natural healing with its origin in Vedic Indian culture that means ‘science of life’ Y (Yoga and Naturopathy): Yoga is a discipline for better physical, psychological and inner peace. Naturopathy is an alternative medicinal system that is based on prevention and cure of diseases by diet control, exercise and therapies U (Unani): a system of medicine that recognizes the seven interlinked components of body as elements, temperament, humors, organs, spirits, faculties and functions S (Siddha): originated in South India is a system similar to Ayurveda yet essentially different in the essence of age group recognition. It lays great emphasis on the psychological and physiological factors H (Homeopathy): a system governed on the Law of Similar that is taken as an advanced form of vaccination which administers similar disease like state in tiniest proportion for curing The role of administering these alternative systems is to maintain and exemplify it by offering professional education and opportunities for research in this field alongside building infrastructure for the same in the form of AYUSH treatment specific dispensaries, colleges, pharmacies and hospitals. The National AYUSH Mission recognizes the extremities in accessibility to good healthcare which is one of the essentials to human life. It aims to bridge the gap by offering better and cheaper access. It envisions to strengthen the quality standards and supply chain- warehousing, value addition, cultivation etc. of drugs and to revitalize the existing schemes. The true essence of AYUSH lies in the principle of ‘prevention is better than cure’ and focuses on overall betterment of lifestyle & healthy mind and not just treatment of disorders. It can be aptly put that it is a way of life rather than merely addressing it as healthcare systems.

DEEDS, NOT YEARS Everyone wants a long life ‘Enlarge my life with multitude of days; In health, in sickness thus the suppliant prays.’

But there is no virtue in a long life with an empty record as such. It has been rightly said by a poet “One crowded hour in a glorious life is worth an age without a name.” There is a legend that the mother of Achilles, the great hero of Homer's Iliad, once offered him a choice; whether he would prefer a long and inglorious life to a brief life of dazzling splendor. And most certainly he chose the latter. The hard conclusion we may derive from this is a short hotshot eventful life is far more desirable than to live unknown a long life of idleness and sloth . Life should be full of action. The shirker always asks - what shall I do? His mind refuses to work because his body wants ease. After all, adventures are to the adventurous. What does it matter if a man lives for 90 years and it’s all a pointless story of idleness and wasted opportunities. Christ died when he was hardly 30; Vivekananda died before he was 40; Napoleon did not live to be 50; Lenin died before he was 60 and yet, and yet (yes, double focus) they have left their impression on human history that no octogenarian can claim. We live in deeds, not years ; Not in thoughts, not breaths ; In feelings, not in figures on a dial ; We should count time by heart-throbs. He most lives ; Who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH Winston S. Churchill once said “Everyone is in favor of free speech. Hardly a day passes without it being extolled, but some person's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage.” Since ancient time, man has attached great importance to his fundamental rights. So, What is freedom of speech? According to the Oxford Dictionary, it is the power or right to express one's opinions without censorship, restraint, or legal penalty. Unhindered flow of words is an essence of free society and should be safeguarded. When this basic human right is threatened, people become very emotional and will do anything to protect it. This always leads to social unrest. Some people argue that freedom of speech should only be allowed to a certain extent. In my views, to consider any nation to be free, it's citizens must be able to say how they feel. To begin with, the government makes laws based on the constitution of a country. In a free society before laws are made, legislation are examined by those who are in agreement and those opposing. In this case everyone has a say, so it is very difficult for any leader to take advantage of the system. This gives the people a sense of safety. Take for instance the case of Kanhaiya Kumar vs. State of Delhi, a students of Jawaharlal Nehru University organized an event on the Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged in 2013. The event was a protest through poetry, art, and music against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru. Allegations were made that the students in the protest were heard shouting anti-Indian slogans. A case was filed against the students on charges of offence under Sections [124-A, 120-B, and 34]. The Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested after allegations of ‘antinational' SLOGANEERING. Police investigation reveal that Kumar’s exact role in the protest was not clear. In 2016, the courts were constantly tested on this topic. It was a year in which cases of sedition, defamation and censorship of films reached a recording number. The supreme court reciprocated by saying “Right to free speech is not absolute. It does not mean freedom to hurt another’s reputation which is protected under Article 21 of the constitution.” Often people question what is ethical or not. What is ethical to one person might be unethical to another, and vise versa. This same belief goes with speech and the way we communicate. There are many words and slang’s that have a different meaning according to the person. With all that said, I leave you with a question “Is freedom of speech a licence to abuse, or a great responsibility?”

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED Life is a journey from Birth to Death, which depends upon the choices that we make. Making choices creates dilemma. One of the hardest choices to make in life is to choose our career. Our career decides how we want to mold and live our life. Almost every one of us witnesses the phase where we are muddle headed about whether to make our passion, a profession or to keep both things segregated. People find it very difficult to choose something which seems different from the usual, and that is the reason why it is called ‘The Road Less Travelled’ in the first place. In a country like India, where social impression succeeds personal impression for most of us, people have become accustomed to follow a well defined or ‘safe’ path. With a mind-set like that, one can’t go too far. Taking calculated risks is what makes our lives interesting and worth living. There are many personalities who have followed their passion and end up setting an example for the world. Walt Disney is one such person, who thought something out of the box. Disney launched several unsuccessful animated characters before coming up with the all time hit ‘Mickey Mouse’ in 1928. Imagine if MS Dhoni would have continued with his regular studies ignoring his zest for cricket. He would be none other than a common person doing a 9 to 5 job, six days a week. Every person has some or the other strength. We just need to identify it correctly soon enough, and work upon it in order to master it. Following our passion is not easy, but if complimented with diligent work and positive attitude it will give us name, fame and above all, eternal joy and a feeling of contentment. - PARISHA RANA

YUVRAJ SINGH An inspiration to millions! Whenever I come across the word inspiration, the one man who sparks in my mind is YUVRAJ SINGH. He is not just a cricketer who won the world cup and crucial matches for India but also a fighter who battled against a dangerous six letter word ‘Cancer’. In general, the first thought that comes to a person who is attacked by cancer is whether he can survive it or not but Yuvi’s perception and thought was entirely different. "Initially when someone is diagnosed with cancer, their first thought is whether they are going to live or not .My first thought was whether I would get to play for India or not.” -Yuvraj Singh And his motive while treatment was also different, "I had three sessions of chemotherapy, so it was really tough, it was hard to go through it. But while I was going through my treatment, I was always motivated that I was going to come back and play for India. I think that's what kept me going and got me through. After Cancer he did not want to be just a fighter by playing cricket but he wanted to provide a similar quality of treatment that he received during his recovery, so he established one foundation named by "YOU WE CAN" which means you and we together can fight against Cancer. In order to provide regular funding to the foundation, Yuvraj Singh started a clothing brand by the name of ‘YOU WE CAN,’ which is now expanding to cover sports accessories too. His aggression on the field with bat and fighting spirit against adversities off the field inspires the Youth. "People will hate you, rate you, shake you and break you. But how strong you stand is what makes you."-Yuvraj Singh

WHERE IS THE SAFE HOME? It was not like every day. Today, it was a strange day for her, a day filled with lots of unfamiliarity. Like every day, today she did not wake up late, nonchalant and carefree. Today was the day which she also felt a little different about. Every usual day, she walks towards a thoughtless way but today something was pushing her which was an alien discovery to her. Dumbstruck she was, when she woke up early morning, helpless her wanted to fall asleep again but something was causing reluctance. She was not able to continue doing what she did every day. Isn’t something strange that happened to her this morning? Perhaps, a lot of you must be thinking who is she? Her introduction, do you really need one? Sadly, she is one amongst those 39,947 faces who have met a similar fate like them. She is a survivor of rape. She is 25 years old. Like every woman she also had woven dreams about her marriage never knowing how it would be shattered. In the quest of living and dreaming for her life suddenly all the beacon turned dim and left her in the mid of pitiful engulf. That morning was a real pain for her. She was finding hard to accept herself, and a silent conflict was ruling her mind leaving her hopeless every passing second. Have you ever wondered, how difficult her life is after that incident? All the promises lost its origin and in return the society, the own people started pointing at her for all the mistakes of which she never committed one. Did you ever realise why most of the rape victims end up committing suicide? The statistics are alarming. NCRB report shows that the overall rate of suicide deaths in 2010 was 11.4 per 100,000 population, and these figures have increased manifold since 2010 till date. The main cause of these suicides are social stigmas and lack of support which is the inherent need for the treatment of any survivor of sexual violence. No matter how ahead we reach in improving the literacy rate but the stark reality is as long as we are not able to improve the very mentality and outlook of people, every effort towards reaching educational goals stand futile. It is very threatening to come across sexual violence news every other day. It does create a very profound fear in the minds of every woman who is dreaming for her life in some way or the other. All I wonder is how far the development is and how far the safe home is?

My little heart is crying in pain

In a room full of friends, I sit alone. I am living in vain. I've cried a million tears And then a million more.

My heart is just so helpless. My soul is on the floor. I can't alter what has been done I will grieve evermore -ISHITA DHIMAN

You went away But I will always be your son.

Mom; it's not just a word We all have our life in her.

But the only one

A beautiful gift for us

Who loves us life long

To teach us lessons of life

We can't see her crying

And shower love..

Seeing her cry

Love you Maa!

THE KEY TO ODDS The opulence was flashy, though pure, As he defined the epitome of a righteous entrepreneur. The world envisaged powerful hardships to lure, Ineffably, his enigma devised solutions and cure, With strength and determination accompanied on side, He established himself encountering mighty tide, The sweet fragrance of love knocked the robust door, With pristine feelings, he blossomed his periphery and core, Self-contention dauntlessly gained ground, Cloaked in a veil of happiness which knew no bound.

Disguised as knaves, betrayal stepped in, Incurring irrecoverable losses, he battled the sin, With sarcastic scuttlebutt, his strength began to shed, “Justice is to our rescue”, the intellectual love said, Unwavering and relentlessly, they altered the stark, Welcoming joyous victory, thus waving the dark, Pioneering for spirituality, he aloof the path of greed, Realisation prompted, signifying the vitality of need, Unceasing time continued ticking the clock, Culminating life’s journey weakened the dock.

Death reminisced that it was time to leave, With last moments of joy, he intended to bereave, The alarm of death indicated the journey’s end, Fear pointed out the things, still left to mend. Unaccomplished ideas made him weak and coy, Pelted back by moments, he dreamt to enjoy, He begged for time as destiny plotted the game, Introduced surprising elements to tap and tame, Jealousy and greed aggravated his zest, Competition began testing his unquenchable quest.

We look at the rusted lock, The strong bolt The aging wood, The settled dust on the door. Maybe an axe would break it, But there's no one inside. It would just ruin the charm of the door. So, let's stand and watch outside

RUKSHMANI KUMARI Rukshmani Kumari is the founder of the NGO Star Foundation under which she has pledged to support economic & social upliftment of women and child education in Rural Rajasthan & later in other parts of India. She always made an effort to empower them in sustainable ways.

Question: Your are a Humanitarian. CEO of Star Foundation (which is working to empower and uplift the underprivileged children in Rural Rajasthan). Who/What inspired to take up this responsibility? Answer: My husband was in The Indian Army and he was the one who inspired me to work for the society. My husband’s death was a turning point in my life from where I realised that if he could give life for the country, I should also contribute my life for the country and its people. I think that rural people are the ones who need our help the most. The root to all the problems is the migration of people from rural to urban areas which can be eradicated by training the rural population. We initiated our work by starting Star Foundation which works towards enhancing the skills of the rural people.

Question: Recently in one of you tweets you wrote, "Leadership is not about your title, it’s about your behaviour.” Would you like to elaborate a bit on the same? Answer: According to me, the way you behave and show compassion is Leadership. If you want to be a leader, it’s your compassionate behaviour that makes a difference and not the title. You become a leader from the day you start living your life for the people.

Question: You’ve been known to promote Sports for women in your capacity as the President of Women Football Team in Rajasthan. How in your opinion Sports (which in India is a male dominated profession) is the perfect way/medium to Empower women?

Answer: It has been a challenge because in Rajasthan, football was not a well recognized sport. In my opinion, sports teaches us lessons which no management school can teach.

Question: You have been a prominent part of a lot of events and marathons and have selflessly devoted your time to focus on Upliftment of women, children, youth & senior citizens. How does it feel to be such an essential/integral part of all of this? Answer: I think calling it as ‘work’ isn’t justifiable as I don’t consider it as one. I rather consider it as my passion. It is my zeal to work for the people. I have started it and I would like to invite more and more people to join me. It would enable each of us to contribute less and make a larger impact, or a ‘difference’ in the world.

SWATI MALIWAL 9th January, a bright and memorable day witnessed the presence of many distinguished guests, including Ms. Swati Maliwal. 31 year old Swati Maliwal before becoming the chief of DCW was prominently known as a social activist involved in various RTI campaigns and also for organizing several campaigns on women issues. She was the youngest member of the core committee of India Against Corruption, out of which the political party AAP was born.

Question: You've extraordinarily rendered your service as the Chairperson of DCW for almost three years. In your experience so far, what has been some of the most challenging problems that the women of this generation have faced? What is your word to them? Answer: I believe that the safety of the women is the most important and realchallenging concern of all times. It is an accepted fact that brutal crimes against women have sky-rocketed in India and other parts of the world. Approximately, there are reports of 6 females being raped every day in the rape capital, out of which 50% are children. The facts are nothing but a call for a loudspeaker grabbing attention from the public and the government for improving the current scenario on the security and safety of women.

Question: Why did you change your entire line of career by giving up Economics Hons. at LSR to pursue Engineering in Information Technology? In addition, how would you enlighten the young minds of today over how to choose their career and the caution one needs to exercise while choosing it.

28

Answer: The reason why I changed my career by giving up Economics Hons. at LSR to pursue Engineering in Information Technology was that of my parents’ pressure, which was a good decision, as it helped me to realize my own potential and interests. I still thank my parents for helping me take this decision and always support me. Sometimes, parents know what is the best for their children. They may exert themselves or pressurize the kid sometimes, but it’s always in the best interest of the child, even if they may not realize it. If you’re doing something, do it with your 100%, give it you 100% because if you do so, the result would also be a 100%

Question: How has been your experience in the capacity as an Advisor to the Delhi CM for Public Grievances? Answer: Considering my long experience of almost ten or eleven years and my groundwork, I was called to be the Advisor to the Delhi CM for Public Grievances. During that period, I realized, more clearly, the importance of one signature in the lives of common people. I set up a Janata Samvad wherein people may come and relate their grievances in the hope of getting satisfactory and contented results. This body helped a lot many people and institutions get justice for their long-awaited problems. The basic grievances were of water and electricity, back in 2015, including roads, women safety, ration, sanitation etc. In a nutshell, the experience was very rich and learning. On the plus side, it helped many people to improve their lives in a significant way.

VASANTHI KUMAR Vasanthi Kumar is the founder of STRAW (Stray Relief and Welfare). As management graduates, Vasanthi has held senior positions in the corporate world. All that while, she has been associated with a number of charity organizations that extend help to destitute children, the old, the blind and the weary animals. However, when it came to setting up her own charity and when a choice had to be made, caring for those that were least cared for in this world, that is the voiceless animals, took precedence and STRAW was born.

Question: Was it difficult for you to take a complete 360’ turn from your career and become a social worker? And would you like to express your view on working women? Answer: As far as coming from corporate world to social work is concerned, it was a very personal decision, there was an internal calling that I need to do something other than the corporate work and at that time my only son was leaving for the hostel, so I had more time in my hand. The time was available and I decided to make a better use of it, for something that I really love and passionate about. That time I had a choice between child welfare and animal welfare and we felt that there were not many animal welfare organizations at that time, and the animal need more help than children cause there are many organizations working towards the welfare of children. That’s how we landed up being a part of animal welfare.

Question: How has been your experience so far as a social activist and what are the challenges faced by people working in your sector? In your opinion, are the associations of NGOs with the government fruitful? Answer: I think association of NGOs with the government could be very fruitful, cause if the government is promoting your cause (is in resonance with your idea), I think nothing like it but the idea is you should match up with what the government is promoting and what you are promoting, should not have conflict of interest. I think it’s a good idea to get associated with the government, it helps.

Question: How effectively do you think has the school curriculum achieved the purpose for which it was set or has it not?

7th Edition

PRERNA

Answer: As far as achieving the curriculum goals is concerned, it depends from school to school and the kind of teaching faculty that you get, sometimes you get very good, and now I am saying this from personal experience, when my son was growing up, he had a very good teacher who continued from grade 4th to grade 7th. He had the same lady teacher, who was very hardworking and had put in a lot of effort to lay the right foundation, so with that, I feel, with our inputs from home, the child becomes a better human being. The idea is to become a good human being and all the other things is set on that foundation.

Question: You have contributed various kind of content for school textbooks and manuals for the teachers, how important do you feel it is to inculcate the human values and what are your views about the same. Have we accomplished to inculcate the human values in our curriculum? Answer: When I use to study, I had a subject called the moral science, and even my son, who's a grown-up man now had it in their curriculum, but it was a subject in which marks didn't really matter, it became a side subject, which is NOT A GOOD IDEA because your foundation gets laid by the moral views that you learn. If that foundation is bad then one can always go into the wrong direction (Now, I am taking as a parent), suppose your foundation is something like where you are allowed to tell lies for example, which doesn’t matter or taking bribes, which has become common in this country, what does the child learn, learns the same thing. It is rightly said, if you want your child to walk on a particular path, start walking in that direction first, your child will automatically follow. So if you are on the wrong path then the child will get on the wrong path and once he gets on the wrong path, there is no turning back for the child. He continues to be on that path and carry on with the wrongdoing cause that’s what he has learned. It's very important to lay a very good foundation of moralistic value.

Question: Also we’d like to know of your experience in protecting animal and welfare schemes related to animals. Do you think this sector need reforms? Answer: I feel animals need a lot of protection. They don’t have a voice for themselves. We have to become their voice. And yes these sectors do need reforms. In my presentation I had shown a picture of a medical student from Chennai, he actually threw a puppy from the fourth floor of his house, videoed it and posted it on Facebook and he was a medical student, so you can imagine as a medical student if he is going to be one of those people who does these kind of

things, kills mercilessly, what kind of a doctor would he become. And for a person like this, he was arrested, as per our law, but there is as less as Rs.100 or Rs.50 as the fine, for doing what he did with an animal. Is this the appropriated amount, so Rs. 50 is what, he will pay Rs. 50 and will go on doing another such crime. As an animal welfare activist, I have been fighting for this, that they should raise the fines, cause they are of no use, these were the fines which were set in the 1960’s under the prevention of cruelty to animals act, and, till date, it continues to be the same. We have been fighting for that the regulatory body should increase the fees, and people should have a fear of law, which would refrain them from doing such malpractices.

Question: What are your views on reservation for women (in colleges and other institutes)? Do you think it is necessary or do you think women are strong enough to be their voice Answer: I think women are strong enough and they can achieve anything and they can strive and come up to the level of men. There is really no point in doing reservations. I feel if the women are good enough to occupy a particular position it should be on the bases of the skills that she possesses and merit to do that, and if she is not good enough and doing it out of the reservation, then there is no point.

PADMAN I have never seen an actor doing so many of hit films. One of the most recent movies on that hit list is Padman. Padman is based on the book "The Legends of Lakshmi Prasad" and is inspired by Arunachalam Muruganantham who is real Padman in Arunachal Pradesh. It is an inspiring movie that also supported the fact that government should provide the poor women with free pads as they don't have much money to buy them. Also, these women lack basic knowledge about hygiene and sanitation which in turn make it the government's onus to make them aware of their sanitation and basic hygiene level. After the release of PADMAN, even Maharashtra government has started giving each pad worth Rs.5. It helped women to ensure proper sanitation in some way or the other. This movie is based on the issue which is usually not raised in our society and it is important to note here that it is an issue which is in great need to be looked at and acted, overlooking is fatal to our society in the longer run. It is alarming to state that still many women in villages use clothes instead of proper pads which are very harmful to their menstrual cycle. The movie is all about menstrual hygiene, caring and empowering women. Akshay Kumar's solid acting make us stand and salute the realistic honest portrayal of real-life superhero. We feel the genuine heartfelt emotion, sadness, happiness, period problems, and female pain.

It's a sort of a documentary types film, professionally made in a commercial movie style which will keep the interest going throughout. PADMAN deserves to be seen and cherished. It's a movie which is meant to bring about a change and its support will definitely serve the purpose of the makers. We must watch it to see Mr. Arunachalam's efforts and remove the barrier of reluctance forever. -CHELSEA ARYA

SUPERWOMAN When somebody asks me about my biggest inspiration, the first name that pops in my mind is LILLY SINGH. She is a YouTuber by the name of IISuperwomanII and she has impacted my life the most. I literally see myself in her. She makes comedy and inspirational videos and is a role model for many youngsters around the world. I have learnt the values of dedication, persistence and hard work from her. As a child she was obsessed with The Rock, The Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls. She was extremely delighted when she received a ring with a ‘S’, which still rocks on her left hand. She grew fondness for the concept of being ‘Superwoman’. She always wanted to be a ‘larger than life’ person and would daydream about becoming a superstar rapper or an actress. But during her graduation years, she developed severe depression and her cheery attitude vanished. She had no motivation left to follow her dreams and this period of self-pity and unhappiness lasted about a whole year. She began to get her life together, often relapsing, until finally she discovered YOUTUBE. She saw it as a great platform to let out her thoughts and realised that there was nobody who looked like her on the internet at that time, giving her the perfect opportunity to make something out of it. She had a new determination of becoming someone’s reason to smile, of making someone’s day better through her videos. With these optimistic thoughts she began her YouTube channel. Her hard work paid off as she rose out of depression like a warrior and built her YouTube empire. She is a big star now but she never lets success get to her head and always gives back to the society by standing up for the issues she believes in, like empowering women through #GirlLove campaign, helping girls go to school in Kenya, etc. She is the ultimate BAWSE, who motivates me to keep going every single day. She is not only one of the highest paid YouTubers, but also a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN. She spreads the message of #OneLove and believes in the power of Digital Media to spread awareness and impact lives. She stays true to her humble beginnings and is always grateful for the different experiences of life. She went on a World tour called ‘A Trip to Unicorn Island’, a synonym for her happy place. Meeting her has been the highlight of my life till now. She focuses on the power of self-love-“Happiness is the only thing worth fighting for in life.” I wish to inspire others the way she has inspired me. We definitely need more role models like her for our generation. ‘One love superwoman, that is a wrap and zoop!’

A NEW CHAPTER I have heard numerous tales from the day I was born, tales of how many mornings my father has prayed for his daughter, tales of how the sunrise from east marks the beginning of the new morning, and how the moon rise in the grim light give us hope to wait for the next morning. Mornings always wrote a new chapter, a new tale to me. Beautiful tales of how a father left home every morning for making earnings for his beloved ones or how a bird set off from the nest for their hunt for food and shelter, the hunt, and struggle which starts in mornings and ends in the night was common amongst both. I cannot count tales of the nights' people would have cried holding their pillows tight, eyes so dull with no waters left inside and slept off with a hope of happy morning. they say things get right on mornings. There were few tales which I weaved too.... For how we would settle in that old home with no fights of past and future. My mornings which starts with your bright smile that could make any home light up which no darkness could ever dim. Tales with happy endings but how can one be happy if its the end. One fine day, we heard news about you. There were people gathered up in the same old home, some worried faces, some eyes dull and few facial expressions I could not read. I did imagine this all on so many nights just like a family film but my climax got wrong and I waited for morning, for things always get better in the morning. I got up with my dried face a little late the next mornings and there were you in the same old home as we dreamt of with all the people around us we hoped for. A final glow of peace on your face but no word came up from you. When my tale was finally a reality, you went in a dream. Many mornings turned into nights and many nights brought mornings but I was waiting for my morning when you won't feel like missing. It happened on the night when the little child was born on this earth, the same old home, the same people, tears in their eyes but this time, there were happy faces. and then I realised the true meaning of morning; a new beginning not when the sun rises but when you realize its time to start afresh. -JYOTI YADAV

A NOTE FROM TEACHERS SRCC has 40 societies, all of which have their own objectives but NSS stands differently. Unlike other societies, there are two differentiating factors for NSS. • NSS volunteers or NSS as a unit, work for the entire year. • NSS Volunteers work without any quid pro quo i.e. they work without any expectation. They work with a desire that they genuinely want to contribute something to the society. I have seen NSS volunteers working towards multiple causes over the year ranging from rural empowerment to environmental concern. NSS is a unit which is truly doing what its motto suggests i.e. service before self. -HARISH KUMAR

NSS is a very nice platform for the students who come from different strata of society. The initiatives of NSS like the blood donation camps and organ donation camps and awareness regarding the same are the need of the hour. But according to me some students which come from economically weaker sections should be given monetary incentives for the time they put in and they can work wholeheartedly without worrying about the opportunity cost of time they put in. -TARUN MANJHI

NSS is a great platform of central government where students work for development of underprivileged and I also think SRCC as part of NSS is also doing a great job not only for upliftment of poor but from every prospective like taking environment friendly measures helping the needy and making the unlearned people learn a few things and I think that's a very good thing. -DIPIKA BANSAL

NSS SRCC my best wishes are always with you I know you are doing a great job. I came to know about different initiatives taken by NSS which are helping in betterment for the society. Good luck for your future endeavours. -HARVINDER SINGH

FROM OUR STUDENTS I was a part of Project Vishwas in NSS, SRCC. It was great to be a part of the team and work so closely with the differently abled people and help them earn a living.NSS SRCC strives to achieve such social goals in a very different manner. Its activities in areas of women empowerment, education, safety, cleanliness are very well defined and implemented. They all bring about a positive change in the society and I wish them all the very best for all their future projects and activities. -HAVISHA GUPTA

I was a part of Sanskar wing of NSS, SRCC. It was an enriching experience as we understood the ground reality of India's education system. The interaction with students of different classes provided great insights. The zeal to learn was quite evident in the students despite their weak financial status. Being a part of such an initiative made me realize the importance of education. I recommend everyone to be a part of this initiative and help spread education. -PRANAV AGGARWAL

NSS SRCC surely makes me feel that there are a lot of people who want to do good for the underprivileged people. The year round projects like Samarpan aims to achieve education for all. It fills me with pride to see their achievements. They have an amazing work ethic. To see such dedication and the results that can be achieved with it is truly heart-warming. Their initiatives are truly one of a kind. -CHAHAT NANDA

One of the best things about Shri Ram College of Commerce is National Service Scheme, what I realized in the first year is that unlike any other society, they give a chance to every student to become a part of the family and grow. The members are unbounded and are free to contribute in their own capacities. Along with working in every aspect for the society, they also foster the development of the members and this is the best thing about NSS. For me, the best event organised by NSS would be the Kiddo Fest and I've only one word to describe it - PURE.

The best people with the greatest initiatives. Glad to be a part of it once. The inner satisfaction one gets is something so precious about this society. Calling it just a society doesn't look good. Every society runs effectively and smoothly only when a balance is maintained. However, when there exists inequalities and wide gaps amongst people over income, health, education etc., there creeps in a dire need to help the underprivileged and the needy. It was a 12-paged newsletter which touched upon different viewpoints and interpretation on the theme of ‘Destiny’. The students of the editorial wing infused their dimensional thoughts to inspire the readers through their content. This newsletter received wide recognition and appreciation from peers and teachers. The third newsletter, ‘SEHER’ was released on 23rd February, 2018. It was a 16paged newsletter which presented different inspiring and motivating write-ups of the NSS Volunteers. This newsletter was based on the theme- ‘The Dawn of Hope’ which in itself is a very powerful call. All the newsletters are released with a purpose of creating an impact and awareness on different subjects. Students did thorough research on the chosen theme to facilitate a better understanding among the readers. This helped them in not only broadening their own horizon of thought but also presenting authentic contents to the readers. The students of NSS are motivated to learn more and more. After the release of each newsletter, students collected the feedback of the NSS and the Non-NSS students as well as the college faculty to understand the scope of improvement and henceforth, implement them.

OUR READERS The newsletters by NSS, SRCC provide a wide overview of topics ranging from societal myths to new beginnings. Not just informative, they help in changing your outlook towards the various things in life. They serve the purpose of raising a question in the mind of the reader, and this is turn makes him see what is actually going on around him. -SONALI JAWA After reading this newsletter. I had closed my eyes for a second and asked myself what I have done till now. I heartfully thanks NSS SRCC for giving me a clear picture to me what I have to do in my life. "You should always give your best and never think about the end result“. This is the line what I have learned from this letter. -SURESH It is good for the NSS volunteers to be expressing themselves. This way they can show their talents in respective fields. Also newsletter tells others about initiatives of NSS. Articles and poems are well written. NSS should keep coming with the newsletter especially on recent topics this way it can increase general awareness as well. -RAHUL MAMAODIA The themes chosen for the three newsletters are simply exquisite in every sense of word. Also, the fact that each newsletter perfectly resonates with the chosen theme and lets the whole idea encapsulate the mind of the reader in the most beautiful way, makes it an exhilarating read. The freedom to express given to each writer coupled with short glimpses of NSS’s journey during the period has made it a wonderful compilation. Kudos to NSS Research and Editorial Team! We look forward to many more enriching pieces in the future. -MANNAT LUTHRA

responsibilities towards the society and the challenges that different sections of society face . Its truly a wonderful initiative taken on part of NSS as power of words is being used at its best to invoke a sense of responsibility. ' Words are pale shadows of forgetten bames . As names have power , words have power . Words can light fires in the minds of men. “Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts”- Patrick Rothfuss. -VAISHALI ARORA The journey, 'Safar' is indeed more important than the destination. Every piece of the collection perfectly motivates every bit of the soul to not fall a prey to destiny's game but let your hard work play the cards and be the king. I liked how real life inspirations and short stories had been included to give one the examples of the fruitful results hard work brings and the role your journey plays in your successful after-life. It is not about the end result you get but about the processes you go through that polish you and craft you all the way to the end. A good read, NSS' Pehal-Maktub. -SHALINI KAUR “Seher: a dawn of hope” a title which can easily arise an intent to read and a desire to feel the words, is an amazing initiative by NSS, SRCC to highlight the difference between optimism of hope and disgrace of despair. The charm to feel the beginning, the lust to exploit opportunities, the spirit to ideate the upcoming and aim to change the myths is something that cannot be explained but can create a shiver down the spine. The desire to hold sweat instead of tears and both being the ejection of water from a body is something that can touch anyone’s soul and makes Seher a must read. -SUMANYU MADAN

PEHAL has broadened our thought process and every time it comes with awakening themes. This time SEHAR is totally a new and motivational theme which means ' the dawn of hope'. This newsletter helps us to improve our vision toward life and motivates us to rekindle the hope that are lost. It makes us aware about the true picture of life and teach us a lot new and inspirational things about life. I hope that the newsletter of NSS will come with such new, inspirational and enthusiastic themes in future. -USHA

FROM OUR PAST VOLUNTEERS As a volunteer of NSS, I became more sensitive and empathetic. It made me feel the urge to help others and also understand that even our small efforts can create positive and ever-lasting changes for many. My 1st Year responsibility was to assist students who are not blessed with proper education through the Literacy classes. As an activity head, I was entrusted with the responsibility of organizing and coming up with better and innovative ideas to create a different learning experience for the kids. As the President, my responsibility enhanced. It included a more holistic approach towards different issues and to manage the day to day working and co-ordination with other counter parties associated. Being a part of NSS for 3 years has groomed me the most. It had helped me face the real world after college and understand my responsibilities as an individual. This experience has helped me give my best at Deloitte and prepare for my MBA exams. -ANKITA SANWARIA NSS PRESIDENT (2014-15)

As an NSS volunteer, I became more sensitive by seeing the difficulties faced by underprivileged people- students who do not have access to good quality education, poor orphans or cancer patients - with my own eyes. The activities organized during the year such as fest provided me with exposure to team work, event management, and groomed my personality. I was Project Sanskar Head during 2014-15 and organized literacy classes for underprivileged students residing in nearby areas. As President (2015-16), my responsibilities became more of liaising with various stakeholders like other NSS chapters, besides coordinating the activities of various internal projects. Completing my MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and having received a campus placement offer in Gurgaon, I would attribute much of my early success to my work in NSS. Be it IIM interview or my CV for placements, social contribution through NSS helped me tremendously in each phase. Moreover, being a fresher at B-school, my experience at NSS was my only significant interaction with world outside academic setup. It helped me shape my career decision and my approach towards life in general.

What I take back from NSS can’t be put into words. NSS has made me a responsible person towards the society. My journey from a volunteer to the Vice President of NSS has also enhanced my horizons on a wide variety of social issues. Heading the NSS Executive team has inspired me to strive for betterment with each passing day. Interacting with volunteers from diverse background not only enhanced my personality, but also infused into me the innovative ideas and zeal to make NSS SRCC better than ever. NSS has developed within me an understanding of the social responsibilities that I need to fulfil while working in the corporate world as an Audit and Assurance Assistant at Deloitte & Touche. These learnings helped me contribute to the CSR events in my organization. -INDULEKSHMI S NSS VICE PRESIDENT (2015-16)

My three years of association with NSS SRCC has not only been instrumental in shaping the outlook towards my social responsibilities but has also made me realie the potential change I could bring if I channelize my energies in the right direction. Interaction with such diverse group of people belonging to various strata of society has widened my perspectives and enhanced my ability to tackle intense situations as well. The lessons of leadership, team spirit and hard work that I learnt in those years will always guide me in all my future endeavors. -SHIVANGI SINHA PRESIDENT (2016-17)

I have always enjoyed the feeling that I acquired after doing a good deed or simply helping someone out. However, through volunteering in NSS I have learned that many organizations exist only with the help of volunteers from the community, I have seen the amount of joy that volunteering brings to those who you are helping out, I discovered a feeling of self-satisfaction that no other activity can bring, NSS formed a very big part of my college life. I was part of NSS for 3 years. I joined NSS in 2014 as a first year volunteer and went on to become the Vice President in my third year. One lesson that continues to impact my life is that far too often we take things for granted. I know that I have my fair share of times. Whether it be that I came from a stable home where I never had to wonder where my next meal was coming from, or that I had many things in life given to me.

After visiting orphanages, old age homes, hospitals, I have realized how lucky I am. Since realizing how much I have, I have become more conscientious of it.

-NIKITA AGGARWAL VICE PRESIDENT (2016-17)

The best thing about NSS is that you join as a volunteer in the first year and apply for a post in the second year. In my case, it was a little different as I became a part of NSS in my second year and applied for the post of editor-in chief in the third year. As a volunteer, I was very much committed to writing and could not explore other wings but I tried to bring my innovative ideas into my editorial works. We brought micro tales into the picture which we had not brought before. I was also lucky to contribute to the magazine. As an editor-in- chief, I was given a board of 30 editors. We came up with 3 monthly newsletter and one annual newsletter where we were able to show case the editorial talent of every volunteer. We decided on the design and the theme for the magazine together consulting everyone. Themes were decided on the basis of the volunteers’ creativity level. The editorial works were made into curated content by me and the design the whole magazine work was done by us all together. I was also a cabinet member and irrespective of the wings, we shared responsibilities when it came to the fest. I was selected by the in-shot media labs where I was working for a certain period but I was more interested in doing an MBA so I took the CAT exam and currently I am appearing for the interviews of B- Schools. However, NSS always remains a part of this journey. Being a part of NSS has impacted me in a major way and even in the interviews I appear in, I talk about NSS a great deal. It has helped me so much in figuring out myself. It has thrown challenges at me and showed me how to overcome them. It has also showed me how to handle and motivate my juniors as to how to be a better version of themselves. Though at first, I was sceptical about applying for the post, I’m immensely thankful now for the experience I’ve learned from it. I also cherish the bond I’ve created with my juniors since as much as I’ve taught them, I’ve learnt from them as well.

THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE 16 year old Mita was going through one of the hardest phases of her short life. Until a few days ago everything was perfect in her little world. But alas! One moment yesterday changed everything. Mita was rushing home from her coaching classes when the incident happened. A deadly collision with a speeding car transformed her entire life. Mita, who always dreamt of becoming a professional footballer, could not even stand on her own feet. “She’s lucky that she escaped with her life intact”, the doctor told her parents. But Mita didn’t think so. One day Mita was lying in her room, mulling over the drastic and unfair turn her life had taken. That is when her father approached her. That afternoon, he told her something that changed her entire outlook towards life. He told her a story. The story of the hockey legend Sandeep Singh Bhinder. The legend made his international debut in 2004 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur. He rapidly rose against the ranks, and became widely known for his drag flick. But his glory had a rather short life. On 22 August 2006, Singh was seriously injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot in the Shatabadi train, while on his way to join the national team. He had to leave for the world cup in Germany two days later. He was almost paralyzed and sustained himself on a wheelchair for two years of his life. But he did not let the wheelchair deter his hopes. Every day, he used to try and walk, using his hockey stick as a medium. He stumbled and struggled with immense pain, but never once did he think of giving up. He only had one thing on his mind-to get back on the field. In the end, his hard work, determination and perseverance won. But, the determined Sandeep not only recovered but also established himself back into the national team. In 2009, Sandeep became the captain of the Indian national team. Under his captaincy, the Indian team won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2009. India won that title after 13 long years. Sandeep was also the top goal scorer of the tournament.

62

Mita was dumbfounded. Here was a person whose story was not much different than hers, but he didn’t let the misfortunes he faced in life determine his fate. She, on the other hand, had almost given up and lost all her hope. But she was a changed woman. No longer would she cry over split milk, she told herself.

Mita tackled her injury with a new enthusiasm. She went through multiple surgeries, and post that, long and painful sessions of physiotherapy. But never once did she lose hope. In the end, she was rewarded for her determination. One day, Mita was standing in the field, watching the sunset after a rigourous training session with her team. She was mulling over how far she had come, and thinking over how far she had to go. With a jolt, she realized that a quote she read once in her English book truly reflected her journey- “The power of perseverance is miraculous!

SHACKLES AND STARDUST Walking along the sidewalk, he could feel his misery creep in. “You make your parents proud, I wish I could have a son like you”. The praises of his well wishers knew no bounds. Of course, he has been an obedient student scoring high in his academics which eventually led to his honourable work which paid him enough to buy an Audi and not worry about it. But he couldn’t explain to his proud parents that he hated his job. All the suits, coffees, pitching, manipulating and deadlines made him feel less humane everyday. He finally snapped today when he was invited to a party celebrating the winning of the case against the cleaning of the lake. Apparently building a new headquarter was more important than cleaning the lake which has been causing health issues for 3 years. Unable to walk any further, he sat down on the sidewalk without worrying about wrinkling his suit. Holding his head with his hands, he pondered upon how he should break the news to his wonderful parents. “What do you want to do then?” they’d ask for which he had no answer. All his life he did what he was supposed to do not what he wanted to do. Hearing a pitiful whinnying, he looked around to see a puppy writhing in pain due to hunger. Not being able to bear it, he rushed to the nearby shop to get a packet of biscuit and a water bottle. His heart filled with happiness as he saw the life returning back to the puppy as it ate. Finally he had found his calling. Maybe suits and ties isn’t life. Maybe helping others was what made him actually happy. -AADHIRA

SOCIAL HEALTH The 2 years with NSS has been a beautiful journey. It has provided me a platform to contribute my bit to the society. NSS stands testimony to the fact that any change can happen if you believe in it. The entire NSS team has constantly inspired me to be a better version of myself. It has taught me to be more confident, responsible and believe in team spirit. NSS has continuously provided me opportunities to learn and grow. The satisfaction that working with NSS provides can’t be expressed in words. I have been very fortunate to be a part of this amazing team. It has been an exceptional experience which has given me beautiful memories to take ahead with me.

PROJECT SANSKAR My experience in NSS was completely different. It has evolved for the better in the last two years. NSS has transformed me from a useless hard stone to a beautiful sculpture. "None of Us are as Smart as All of Us.“ This quote best suits my NSS team. The co-ordination we had amongst all of us throughout the year was outstanding. I specially thank Adarsh & Anubhuti for their great support in my ups and downs. Thank you all and thank you Team NSS.

Being a part of National Service Scheme family has been a very different experience for me. Working of NSS is very different from other societies in college. It's a platform where you can selflessly help others with the motive of getting peace of mind. NSS provides me an opportunity to think big, improves my personality and the way of thinking. We can engage in any task or event irrespective of the wings in which we are, which helps in developing our way of looking towards the society. Working with enthusiastic colleagues, seniors and juniors, these two years, firstly as a volunteer and then as a cabinet member has been the most memorable part of my life. At last I want to say that small changes in our mindset can indeed make a big difference in our lives.

Helping people in need was always in my blood. My father has been of the ideology that we should use atleast some part of our earnings to help the poor. Being a volunteer to a new project in first year, NSS gave me the opportunity to grow by sharing ideas with seniors. That eagerness to work for the project and take project to greater heights has always pushed me to give my 100%. Leading the project helped me to take up responsibilities and realize how to effectively manage things. Working for SAMARPAN has been a wonderful experience. NSS gave me a lot of friends, the whole cabinet has always worked like a family, the family I can never forget. I thank NSS family for bringing out a better person in me.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

AASHI

Whenever someone asks me, “Where do you come from?”, I like to say that I am a global citizen and not because I have lived in different places but because so many people around the globe have touched my heart through service. Hope is a human’s biggest asset and that kindness is its most effective medium to spread this and that’s exactly what my experience has been like. There have been usual challenges but accompanying that there have been knowledgeable sessions, laughter full of flash mob practices, change-making meetings and a pure intention to help empower people especially women. And for that I would like to whole heartedly thank my juniors and everyone else who continues to be a part of this journey.

I have never felt that I am restricted to my wing only because there is no such word 'my', there is only 'us'. When I joined NSS in the first year , I didn't know, I will get too attached with NSS. Bond we all share and friends I made here are awesome. Smiles and learning are born here, Where all are willing to wipe out your tears. SOCIAL SUPPORT My journey in NSS has been one of a kind. My purpose of joining NSS at the first place was to do my bit with this amazing bunch of the sweetest and kindest people I have ever seen. I started off as a member of social support where I had the privilege to meet cancer patients, Autistic children, old people and may others. The positivity that NSS as a society has is unmatched. From teaching students for the entire year to gifting teachers on teacher day, NSS has come a long way in spreading smiles to the Community in its own way. I consider myself lucky to be a part of this wonderful family and thank my cabinet and seniors for giving me the opportunity to do my bit in making this world a better place to live in.

SAKSHI

PROJECT VISHWAS I believe that service to others is something that you can't take away from yourself. It helped me understand the value of sacrifice and the happiness one gets from doing whatever is in our power to see others happy. Working as the head of Project Vishwas turned out to be one of the best experiences in my college life. However challenging the work was, the only thing that kept me going is the thought that whatever I am doing is putting up a smile on a differently abled's face. Bonding with other activity heads and leading the team with Jitesh alongside, helped me understand the value of friendship. I am convinced that these days will be memorable whenever I take long stroll through this nostalgic lane.

During my childhood days, service was merely a word to me. To my little brains, service meant helping people and getting nothing in return. But when I grew up, noticing people doing service by simple and small acts, I knew it definitely gave them something in return. When I joined NSS, I finally understood what service meant. It means helping out people from all strata with the best you can. Satisfaction and immense happiness is the reward for service in addition to gaining experiences. In Project Sanskar, students learning different things, achieving good grades, participating in activities and ultimately learning to become a good human being; when you become the reason behind their smile, it’s the best feeling ever. Not every person who does social service becomes a great social activist but may turn a normal human being into a great one by his help.
