Maria Dunning was lucky enough to embark on one of Australia’s most spectacular rail journeys from Darwin to Adelaide on The Ghan. We often forget what wonderful travel experiences we have on our door step and this journey is one not to be missed! You’ll be captivated by the red earth, glimpses of unique wildlife and captivating outback splendour. Experience the open country at a relaxing pace, watching scenery roll by as you sip a beverage and chat to your fellow travellers in the lounge or in the comfort of your ensuite cabin. Our journey started in Darwin, a city with an East Timorese influence, relaxed atmosphere and fascinating multicultural
population. I was pleasantly surprised at the city’s beauty and uniqueness. A few hours north east is Kakadu National Park—a natural wonder defined by raw beauty and ancient history. We stayed at the Wildman Lodge, which offers a range of activities and exquisite food. I recommend you take a day tour on the Yellow Waters Lagoon to see crocodiles and birdlife. The bush tucker walk with Daryl, a local and staff member at the lodge, is also fascinating. The trip south to Katherine provides a wonderful opportunity to experience Katherine Gorge and its waterfalls, wildlife and rock art. Then, it’s on to Alice Springs where you may wish to visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kings Canyon, before catching the next departure to Adelaide. Don’t miss the amazing star gazing in Kings Canyon! In Adelaide, be sure to take the time to visit the Barossa Valley wine region, Kangaroo Island and Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement—Hahndorf.

Tr a v e l T i p s & Tr a p s When preparing for your trip, it’s important to review useful travel information and advice, and educate yourself on common tourist traps to help you have an enjoyable, hassle-free holiday. Susie Cliff shares her travel wisdom, ranging from the practical to the profound, revealing insights and ideas for mature travellers.
Booking a holiday Research your holiday with a budget in mind—either through a trusted travel agent or independently via the internet. National Seniors Travel has been established for over 16 years and takes pride in saving members money on their dream holidays. Without a travel agent you’re on your own. Not only can we assist you by saving you money, time and by making valuable travel recommendations, but we can also help if your booking arrangements don’t go to plan on your trip.
Booking conditions Make sure you are aware of the booking conditions before you pay a deposit. These are usually found on the back of the travel brochure. Read them carefully or ask your travel agent to explain them to you.
Travel documentation Passports: Fill out your name and address in pencil in the area of your passport that allows you to do so. Take a photo copy of the first page of your passport and take it with you. Store it in a safe place, away from the original, also leave a copy of it behind. Most countries will not let you enter the country unless you have at least 6 months validity. Visa: Always make enquiries into whether it is a requirement to obtain a visa to enter the country you are travelling to. Tickets and itinerary: Check over and read your itinerary and tickets carefully, and ask your travel agent for an explanation of anything you do not understand. Leave a copy of your documents behind with a relative or friend. Also ensure that the airline reference numbers and tour booking numbers are printed on your travel documents and that you can quote them if required.
Travel insurance You can’t afford a holiday if you can’t afford travel insurance. Travel insurance is a must when travelling in Australia or overseas. Also ensure that you have the right insurance for the destination you are travelling to. Have the number of the emergency contact for your insurance company with your other important documents in case an emergency arises.
Money and credit cards The best form of money when travelling is a Cash Passport or a Visa/MasterCard debit card. These are more economical than using your regular ATM cards and are also secure. Carry as little cash on you as possible at any given time. Allow a budget of around $100 per person, per day, for meals and incidentals. This amount can be less on tours and cruises—unless you intend to do shore excursions. Take copies of your credit card numbers, and take the phone numbers of your financial institutions with you so that you can contact your card issuers quickly in case there is a problem.
Packing prescription medicines When planning to travel overseas with PBS medicine, including over-the-counter or private prescription medications, it is important that you: • Discuss the medicine you will need to take with your doctor • C arry a letter from your doctor detailing what the medicine is, how much you will be taking, and stating that it is for your own personal use • L eave the medicine in its original packaging so it is clearly labelled with your own name and dosage instructions • I f you have to carry needles and syringes, check with the embassy of the country you are visiting to ensure this is acceptable. Inform your airline prior to travel and arrange a letter from your doctor detailing why you need to carry them.
Safety tips • Don’t travel around at night • Don’t wear expensive jewellery on display • Wear your valuables in a belt close to your skin • C onsider carrying a dummy wallet with a small amount of money in case your wallet is stolen • Carry the Australian Embassy details with you • R egister your trip details with Smart Traveller www.smartraveller.gov.au
Before you go... Cancel any newspaper delivery and have someone collect your mail. Ask someone to water your indoor plants. Defrost the fridge for long trips away. Unplug all major electrical items before you leave. Tell your bank and Centrelink if you are going overseas.
