James Corbett: Timeless Art “I’d like to think that years into the future, my sculptures will be seen as not only desirable art work, but also as an intriguing time capsule from the age of the motor car.”

I

n the late 1960’s, Australian, James Corbett was a small boy. His young class mates would always say that he would be an artist when he grew up. “I could and always did draw”. By the time he was in high school that was forgotten, “back then in our part of the world, art wasn’t even offered as a subject… a career in art . . . well that was just ridiculous. I was a bit keen to be an architect but really didn’t get any support or encouragement to do that. I was encouraged to join the public (civil) service, and that’s what I did. I hated it every day for the two years that I was there.” Thirty years later after firstly being a signwriter and then the owner of an auto recycling business, James became an artist. “I was surrounded by all these parts every day. I could see shapes in them. I had given this guy some parts for his rally car, and he had won a trophy made from gears welded together. It was just an abstract thing, but he left it on the counter as a sort of a thank you. One day I looked at it and thought, “I can do better than that, and so I made my first sculpture from car parts. Just to prove it to myself. That really was a life changing moment for me. I really enjoyed the process, and the chance to be creative again. I did another one and then another, and after making maybe half a dozen, each so much better than the last, I could see that I had found a talent that I hadn’t known that I possessed. The auto recycling business was ordinary and money was tight, but I knew I had found something, and I made a decision to see how far I could take it. I had always told my young sons to make the most of any talent they had been given, I had no choice but to live the advice, I went at it 100%”. “That initial period was pretty tough. Learning how gallery people work and think, making

His subjects vary from life size people and animals to his trade mark Speed Demons, “I think my favourite subjects are dogs and the monster pre WW1 race cars. The dogs because of their sheer variety, and I love the way that they speak with their eyes and ears. If I can get that right, they can be so alive. Those cars because of the lunacy, passion and naivety. Speed and glory was the goal. Stopping, turning, or survival was incidental.

sculptures, and running the recycling business. Luckily my wife, Jodie has always been the No. 1 fan of my work. The sensational thing was that when I was able to get my work in front of people, they loved it, and they bought it”. Within a year of making the decision to pursue his art, the auto recycling business was gone, and James was indeed a full time artist. He has had regular solo exhibitions in Sydney, the Cotswolds in England and in Palm Desert California. He has done commissions for people as far afield as Russia, India, England, Singapore, Europe, U.A.E. and the U.S.A. His work has been featured on television commercials in Asia and Africa. Not bad for an untrained artist, living on a large island at the bottom of the world, a long way from anywhere. People are enthralled by his ability to put personality and life into inanimate things. “This is what makes them art”, says James. “My works are like a solved puzzle.” His subjects vary from life size people and animals to his trade mark Speed Demons, “I think my favourite subjects are dogs and the monster pre WW1 race cars. James is well versed in the field of speed, having raced some form of bike or car for a large part of his adult life, endure bikes, baja racers, vintage sprint cars, and now at 51Formula Fords. “I’ve always really enjoyed racing, and I have quite a passion for beautiful mechanical things, I find the thought process behind them intriguing”. “When I work, I don’t bend parts, sometimes I cut them, but I always try and work within the rule that each individual part remains recognisable. The balance between chrome parts, mechanical bits, and some of the lovely old patinated or brass parts is really important. That balance helps to portray the subject’s character in the completed piece. I’d like to think that years into the future, my sculptures will be seen as not only desirable art work, but also as an intriguing time capsule from the age of the motor car”. “I get emails from people all around the world, liking what I do. It is very flattering and pleasing to know that I can give people some enjoyment just by looking at what I have done. I have been astounded to be written by university students on the other side of the world that they are critiquing my works in

INNOVATION

elBulli 2005 - 2011 “We need a new model for expressing culinary creativity. The elBulli Foundation is one form. But the Foundation is done not for us - but for the next generation. We won’t know the next elBulli for fifteen years.” - Ferran Adrià > El Bulli was undoubtedly the most controversial and experimental restaurant in the world that received up to 1,000,000 reservation requests a year, where only 8,000 fortunate guests would secure a table. > Ferran Adrià – the chef who earned elBulli it’s worldwide fame is one of the most famous people in Spain and has been acclaimed to be the best chef in the world. > After closing his restaurant to the public in 2011 to begin its converstion to the elBulli foundation, a think tank for creativity across the arts, Ferran and his team have dedicated themselves to pouring through the extensive elBulli archives to document and analyze their creative output. The result is elBulli 2005-2011 - the first and only complete record of elBulli’s final and most innovative years. Phaidon, $625, www.phaidon.com/elbulli

elBulli Foundation > elBulli 1846 - the number signifies both the birth year of the seminal French chef Auguste Escoffier and the total number of original recipes generated at elBulli in the Adrià years, elBulli DNA, and Bullipedia. > elBulli DNA will be 30 or 40 creative people, not just chefs but people in other disciplines, sharing the creative process. Everything will be broadcast online in real time, and everyone will work on joint projects using new technologies. elBulli 1846 will be an exhibition devoted to the history of cooking, the culinary genome, and the creative genome. > And Adria is creating Bullipedia, which he described as “an Internet tool at a professional level” featuring the “taxonomy of the discipline, botany and the species,” something he said no one had ever attempted before. Bullipedia is slated to go online this fall. •
