To the members of the NSW Women’s Bowling Association Inc. The NSWWBA Board have much pleasure in presenting to you the 84th Annual Report and Financial Statement for the year ended 30th June 2013.

Current members for NSWWBA Inc at the close of the Financial Year 30th June 2013 are 22,861 members and 505 clubs. We have 16 Regions, 48 Districts and 505 Clubs therein, with 13 Isolated Clubs. NSWWBA Inc has one Honorary Club – Lord Howe Island.

State President — Patricia Reynolds (Resigned June 2013) It is with pleasure that I present the Annual Report of the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association Inc. (NSWWBA) for 2012-2013.

The year commenced with our new CEO, Nicky Bethwaite, familiarising herself with our organization. What became obvious very quickly was that her progressive ideas fitted very well into the Board’s plans for change. The Strategic Plan for 2013-16 was ready for implementation by the end of 2012.

The Board had changing fortunes during the year – our Finance Director Barbara Holden and Director Maryann Parcell resigned and Director Noelene Harvey passed away.

We have welcomed three new Directors in Pam Andrich, Sue O’Keefe and Denise Huender.

The Board now comprises Robyn Procter, Beryl Watson, Pam Andrich, Sue O’Keefe, Denise Huender, and Appointed Director Pam Hockings.

Under Governance Principles and “Best Business Practices” the Board has voted to comply with these practices and have the election of their President/Chair voted on by the Directors for each year. This will bring us into line with most businesses and is recommended by the Australian Sports Commission. Assessment and review of the Board and its Directors has taken place, as has assessment of the CEO and her duties.

The State Carnival went south this year to the Shoalhaven area, 224 teams took part with Bomaderry Bowling Club as host club and 9 neighbouring clubs offered their greens.

The weather for the whole five days was brilliant sunshine and all 896 players had a wonderful carnival. All of this came about with the co-operation of the Shoalhaven City Council and NSW Regional Representative Meg McClure. Thanks go also to South Coast District President Dorothy Sullivan and District Secretary Louise Tucker. The Opening Dinner was a huge success with everyone wearing a mask. The entertainment was superb and was a great forerunner of the happy days ahead. Special mention must be made of the State Match Committee who runs particularly smooth events, Chairman Pamela Hockings and committee ladies Robyn Lewis and Jennifer Palmer.

Sponsors are an integral part of any sporting organization and the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association is fortunate to have the generous sponsors who support our sport and our Association. (See page 10 for sponsors and partners).

Many visits have been made by myself and the Directors to special days at clubs and even the very small clubs have been visited. The warm reception at every club was greatly appreciated.

Our State squads both Over 60s, senior, U25s and U18s have acquitted themselves with great honour whenever they have been called upon to represent. World and State titles have been won, as well as other international success. A new State Side Manager, Daphne Shaw (a former International star) accompanied the sides and we thank her for her support.

Forums have been undertaken wherever State events have been held and quite a lot of open dialogue has taken place. Arising from this many options were put to the Association regarding the manner in which Pennants are played at present. These options are still under discussion and it is hoped that, while not everybody will not be satisfied, that most people will accept what may be put forward and give it a try.

Bowls Matters, the Association’s magazine, has had intense improvement over the last few issues, and from all accounts, it is very well received.

The Royal NSW Bowling Association and our Association have employed an outside specialist to look at the respective State boundaries and to report the findings to us. The first general report has been given and we are waiting on the next and more specific report.

The Board acknowledges the wonderful work done by Bowl for Others (BFO) the charity arm of the Association. In September each year they hold a Luncheon in the city at which many representatives from quite a number of charities come together and are presented with their cheques.

These representatives then give an overview of how the monies are applied and it is quite overwhelming to know to what extent your $1 for BFO helps.

The Association is in great need of your support. It is known that volunteers are hard to come by, but your Association cannot operate without people in various positions. There are a number of vacancies available, for instance, a Director, three Selectors, Umpire, Constitution Revision Board, Match, and Coaching.

To all the staff — Nicky, Renee, Selam, Janine, Alex and Kate — the Board acknowledges the dedication you have in your roles and the support you extend to the Board.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Districts/clubs/members for all the good wishes for my health in retirement. I wish the Association all the very best for the bright future that it has and know that the sport of lawn bowls in New South Wales is in very good hands.

CEO’s Report — Nicky Bethwaite Vision NSWWBA Inc. providing a sustainable future for women and girls in the sport of lawn bowls through a dynamic and progressive approach Having been involved in sport most of my life from both a competitive and an administrative perspective, what is most fascinating is that there are far more similarities between sports than there are differences. One of the pivotal influences is the leadership and therefore the culture that prevails from time to time and sports that have a strong plan and know where they’re headed are in good hands.

To this end, one of the more important initiatives undertaken at Board level this year has been to align the NSWWBA strategic outlook with Bowls Australia’s 6 point plan for 2013-2016. Although we have different priorities to the national association, it wasn’t difficult to adopt the six ‘pillars’ of Participation, High Performance, Events, Commercial Development, Leadership & Governance and Communications as being pivotal to the future of women’s bowls in NSW. Participation leads the way in recognition of the sliding membership that has taken place over recent years. Bowls is uniquely placed to take advantage of the ‘baby boomer’ bulge that is hitting its 60s now and for the next 10 years, however it needs to get its house in order first. It’s all very well to promise the benefits of fun, fitness and friendship by joining a bowling club, but if the environment at the club doesn’t deliver a welcoming atmosphere with flexibility to accommodate busy lifestyles, then we’ll find ourselves being bypassed for other activities that do offer these things.

NSW has the great good fortune to be the home state of the majority of the 2013 Bowls World Champions, a situation that is unique in the history of the sport. And what wonderful, humble, friendly people they are – enough to make any sport proud. How to capitalise on this and utilise these amazing role models is our very pleasant challenge.

Every sport lives and dies by the success of its events. NSWWBA has a history of conducting quality, sustainable competitions and the

Association’s flagship event, the State Carnival, lived up to its reputation, starting with a bang at the Masquerade Dinner at host club Bomaderry. The weather was perfect, the hosting clubs were super friendly and the competition was the best. It’s a unique event in that anyone can enter from right around the state and form a team with anyone else from any other club and can then potentially win through to the end. A true ‘open’ in name and in spirit.

Marketing is a combination of many aspects and draws together all the elements of the Strategic Plan. It is essentially an exercise that works within the framework of these pillars, leveraging the success of the individuals and events to obtain the maximum benefit to the sport, either by way of attracting new members or new ways of doing business. The image of the sport has been undergoing a slow transformation and much still needs to be done, but if we overpromise and under deliver we will lose more than we gain, so a carefully structured marketing plan aligning with the business plan is in the works.

The Australian Sports Commission, the peak sports body in Australia, has served notice on the elite sports that they fund. Bowls is in this group and the ASC’s expectations include updating all Constitutions to reflect proper electoral processes, transparency, member protection, ethics, adherence to the anti-doping rules and outlawing matchfixing. NSW WBA is in the happy position of having only a handful of clubs that have not accepted the new Constitution for their club and this will provide many benefits to the clubs for years to come.

The State Association itself has still had to iron out some creases over the past year, with the most recent being the adoption of a reduced quorum so as to enable it to fulfil its legal obligations in holding the AGM. Thank you to all of you who enabled this to occur.

Lastly, but probably most importantly, communication is an ever-changing tool. With the investment in the new Whole of Sport IT system, with a new website, we are aligning ourselves with all other mainstream sports by being able to deliver news and results in a fast and effective manner. Our magazine has gone from strength to strength and we have streamlined it into a quality read, with more changes in the pipeline. The advent of an e-newsletter every few weeks has also allowed the quantity of official emails from head office to be reduced for greater effectiveness. Splitting our communications into official Memos, an e-news for the reminders and less important notices and the magazine for an overall roundup of all that happens every two months has been an efficient process.

Associations do not run themselves and I am fortunate to have fantastic people with whom I work.

Janine Kerr, the Finance Manager, delivers accurate information and informed advice every week. As interest rates have declined this past 12 months, the Association’s investments have needed to be aggressively invested and monitored and our bottom line profit is due to the interest earned on these investments.

Selam Woldemichael has now been with the Association for over 7 years and there isn’t 8

much she hasn’t seen or heard. Selam is the keeper of the data and as such is our ‘engine room’ of information. The efficient manner in which she answers members queries and processes the annual returns is a tribute to sophisticated systems and IT knowledge. Our database is our intellectual property and by law is subject to privacy to protect the members. Selam’s grasp of query tools, graphs and statistics provides the Board with accurate information on which to base their decisions.

Renee Payne, the Operations Manager, works with the coaching and umpire committees and also for the match committee from time to time. We have had a busy 12 months with the Presentation & Accreditation modules that are an essential part of the coaching process. It is wonderful to see how many women are taking up the challenge to help their local bowling communities to provide this knowledge and Renee has been able to communicate the various requirements and answer all queries. Her organisation of the Masquerade Dinner was a real achievement!

Alex Ryan took on the role of Marketing Manager with great enthusiasm and had a direct influence on the production and presentation of the magazine. Working with Barbara Hazeltine and the Journal Committee, Alex gathered and organised the information of our most important communication tool. She also launched and wrote the e-news regularly, co-ordinating the information with the website and social media wherever necessary. Alex has now left us to pursue her career in other fields and we wish her all the best.

Kate Wingrove is the new resident bowler in the office, joining us in April, and gives us the perspective of club bowling. She has very quickly settled into the reception role and has become such a part of the team that it is hard to remember what it was like before!

I have been very fortunate to have spent my first year with NSWWBA in such a supportive environment and my thanks go to the staff and to the Board. I’m looking forward to 2013-14.

Match Committee Pamela Hockings (Chair), Robyn Lewis, Jennifer Palmer Another 12 months have come and gone and the State Match Committee is pleased with the success of the events held over the past year. Our Champion of Club Champions in Singles and Pairs started our year in 2012 with the winners of the pairs Kay Moran and Karen Murphy, and the Singles winner Karen going on to win the National Champion of Champions event in both disciplines, in Queanbeyan in the latter part of 2012.

All our winners and runners up are listed on pages 46 & 47 and we again congratulate the achievers and also their Clubs who should take great pride in their members’ efforts.

The Pennant Playoffs were once again a great success and fiercely contested in all grades. This still seems to be the pinnacle of achievement for the competitive bowler and we hope that the changes in the 2014 Pennant competition will satisfy those who seem to have become disgruntled with true competition amongst all members of the Association who choose to participate.

The State Championships were affected by a last minute BA selection of one of the participants and a reshuffle of the schedule was required. The Match Committee thanks all players for their understanding during a very difficult time, trying to accommodate all players within the framework of our Conditions of Play. The 16 Regional winners in five events battled it out over the eight days of the Championships, and the teams playing in the final of each event showcased wonderful sportsmanship and enjoyment of the game to a very appreciative and supporting crowd of spectators.

Our Representative teams in all categories enjoyed a tremendous 12 months and took on all comers in all games contested, and brought home all trophies and awards on offer.

Our hearty congratulations to all representatives for this wonderful achievement.

As Match Chairman I again thank my wonderful Committee members Robyn Lewis and Jenny Palmer for their continuing hard work in and out of the office to ensure all events run smoothly on the day. To Nicky, Renee, Alex, Selam and our newest office member Kate, thanks for your help and support to our Committee. Thanks to Janine for making sure we always have somewhere very comfortable to lay our weary heads, and also for ensuring that the financial side of the events is always well in hand.

Our thanks also to the Board members and other Committees for their assistance when necessary and particularly Audrey and Lesley, our Umpires, for their continuing good work.

Finally to all the officials and volunteers at our venue Clubs during the last 12 months who have given tirelessly of their time and enthusiasm, the local markers and umpires when required and the Greenkeepers who have prepared greens for us in some atrocious weather conditions in the past year, your efforts have all combined to contribute to the success of all our State events. Our sponsors are the backbone of our Association and “thank you” seems inadequate, but it comes from the heart.

Umpires Board Lesley Swales and Audrey Gray The past twelve months have been a busy time for the Umpires Board. Audrey and I have umpired many games at State Level, including State Pennant Finals, State Championships and the State Carnival. Our thanks to all the local umpires who helped with these events and others.

To the District Umpires Sub-committees we say thank you for all the time and effort you put into tutoring the new umpires and re-accreditations. We must also thank the Clubs and Greenkeepers who make their facilities available to the Sub-committees.

On behalf of Audrey and myself I would like to thank CEO Nicky and the administration staff, Renee, Selam, Kate, Janine and Alex (who was until recently a member of staff) for their assistance and co-operation during the past year.

Coaching Panel Kathy Chatillon and Elizabeth McFarland The NSWWBA Coaching Panel has had a very satisfying and proactive year in helping and educating our coaches throughout NSW. We welcomed Elizabeth McFarland, the newest member to the NSWWBA Coaching Panel. Elizabeth enjoyed her first year and I look forward to a successful 2014 working together.

NSWWBA have three Bowls Australia accredited Presenters & Assessors (P&A’s) – Kathy Chatillon, Denise Huender and Margaret Sheean. P&A’s provide the instruction and training for BA to conduct Club Coach & Introductory Coach courses, Selection & Competition Modules plus Reaccreditations for all coaches in NSW. Elizabeth McFarland is a BA Assessor and is currently in the process of completing her Presenters’ final assessment.

Coaching Clinics Over the past 12 months NSWWBA Coaching Panel has been able to reach over 350 bowlers (men and women) throughout NSW, presenting coaching clinics. Coaching Discussion Groups All coaching Discussion Groups strive to continue the ongoing education and updating of the coaching process so as to maintain their high standard of Coaching in their areas.

Congratulations to all Groups and members, who had the initiative to invite and work together with our male counterparts by forming academies and combined Zone committees for the expansion, progress and improvement of the communication for all coaches. It can only benefit our playing members.

I would like to thank Norma Barry who travels with me to assist with the coaching clinics in country areas. Norma is a valuable asset to the NSWWBA Coaching Panel – please accept my genuine appreciation and gratitude for your commitment to the state.

Also I thank the NSWWBA Board of Directors, CEO Nicky Bethwaite and Beryl Watson who holds the coaching portfolio as a director (after the demise of Noelene Harvey).

To the NSWWBA Staff members, firstly Renee who assists the coaching panel. Renee understands the all-inclusive format of coaching, and is a delight to work with, and along with the other staff – Selam, Janine, Kate and past staff member Alex, these ladies have always been only too happy to support the Panel. Our heartfelt appreciation for your ongoing assistance and we look forward to again having a good proactive year for coaching.

In conclusion, may I thank all club coaches who dedicate their time for the members in their club and ably assist us when we work together as Coaches.

Selection Committee 2012/13 has been a successful year for all NSW State Teams. As no selectors were appointed at the 2012 Annual Meeting, the Board decided to only make minor changes to the successful 2012 State Squad. Consequently no Trials took place in November 2012.

The Over 60s State Team was very successful winning the National Title held at Queanbeyan Bowling Club in October 2012. NSWWBA “Team of the Series” was presented to Judy Brady, Gayle Gannon, Sue Wood and Noreen Sneddon.

Constitution Revision Board Robyn Procter The past twelve months have been a continuation of the acceptance by our members of the "new" Constitutions – State, District and Club, although the emphasis during this time has been with the District and Club Constitutions and By-Laws.

Most Districts and Clubs readily accepted their respective Constitutions and many made changes to the By-Laws to suit their needs. All By-Laws required approval by the Association and to-date almost 500 Club By-Laws and 46 District By-Laws have been returned duly approved. It is disappointing that a very small number of Districts and Clubs have not complied given the extended closing date for submitting their By-Laws and will soon receive final notices to comply or face having their membership of NSWWBA not being renewed.

Due to some discrepancies in the Club Constitution, the Association undertook to review this document during March this year. The Constitution has been examined by our Solicitors and we are awaiting results of further legal opinion. In due course, the Association will advise all clubs of the outcome.

Member Protection problems persist and usually resolutions are found. In a few instances, members are involved in Registered Club matters and generally the Association is not in a position to assist, however we are willing to answer questions to ensure the correct process has been undertaken. The Member Protection Policy 2012 outlines our commitment to a person’s rights to be treated with respect and dignity and to be safe and protected from abuse. This policy informs everyone involved in our sport of her legal and ethical rights and responsibilities and the standards of behaviour required. It is available for download on our website and a copy should be made available to members on request.

My sincere thanks to CEO Nicky, Selam, Renee, Alex and Janine for their valuable support during the past twelve months — your dedication and enthusiasm is certainly appreciated. To Barbara Holden, our Finance Director, who retired due to ill health, thank you for your encouragement. Journal Committee Barbara Hazeltine (Editor), Wendy Steyer, Elizabeth Whelan, Jackie Lewis This past twelve months has seen a number of changes yet again for the journal including a new team member, Jackie Lewis, who is a welcome addition to the team.

Together Wendy, Liz, Jackie and I along with staff member Alex Ryan put together the bi-monthly editions of ‘Bowls Matters’.

To all our readers, thank you for your favourable comments about the journal and its new title ‘Bowls Matters’. As President Patricia Reynolds said, “It can be taken two ways depending where you put the emphasis.”

In order to get your journal to you we enlist the help of many people within the Head Office and community. Alex’s involvement in the creation and collation of the new look Journal has made a great impact, in conjunction with CEO Nicky Bethwaite, President Patricia Reynolds and NSWWBA Directors. It would be remiss if reference was not made to the Advertising Sales Managers/Graphic Designers Robert & Sue Ellis, who for 13 years have published, collated and distributed Bowls News and now, Bowls Matters, for you.

The journal would not be in print if it were not for the Publicity Officers within each club and various other members who send in articles and photos for the Magazine. The journal is still reliant on its readers and their input. We welcome Letters to the Editor and your contributions relating to the happenings in your club.

The NSWWBA Journal Committee encourages your feedback on your favourite part of the new magazine. For mine I am enamoured of the Contents page as it makes finding articles much quicker than before. Last year the introduction of the Bowls News/Bowls Matters as an electronic version on the NSWWBA website, has allowed for greater distribution.

Thank you to Rosemary O’Brien from Merrylands Club for sharing her ideas and thoughts with us. We welcome guest editorials from time to time, controversial or otherwise, as they make great reading. One of the items all editors look for is a touch of controversy every now and then. Rosemary has opened her life to you, both the good and maybe otherwise.

Rosemary, for your great contributions to the sport of bowls — thank you many times over.

Thoughts and items are always welcome and the committee looks forward to the next twelve months.

Barbara Hazeltine Chair - Journal Committee

Regional Representative Committee Denise Huender Regional Rep meetings have been held twice this year and it has given all reps the opportunity to work together sharing problems and successes they have encountered.

The first meeting this year was held in March and Regional Reps were asked to submit agenda items for the first meeting, enabling me to get an understanding of issues that were happening around the State, and the role the reps were fulfilling. Reps gave a brief NSWWBA Annual Report

report on what had been happening in their regions, identifying some problems which other reps had previously encountered and could offer advice.

One concern that the Reps brought up for discussion was Pennants, and Pam Hockings was able to join the meeting and offer the Match Committees insight into Pennants.

Nicky Bethwaite gave an overview of the Strategic Plan, outlining the main areas that were being addressed in this document. One item on the strategic plan was the need for communication at all levels and the process of dissemination of information to the members, and how the role of Regional Rep is of paramount importance where communication is concerned. Nicky explained the new IT system and the time line for its implementation.

It was felt that declining membership was an issue that affected all regions and although there can be no simple solution, discussion on different activities that regions/ clubs were using successfully were shared. Retention of members was discussed and the importance of involving new members in particular.

Of concern is the lack of regional reps in country areas. Although we have been able to gain two new regional reps in Regions 4 and 11, we are still short in some key country areas. Similarly, we are searching for two city representatives for Regions 15 and 16.

The second meeting this year was held in June. Robyn Proctor addressed the meeting on Member Protection policy and gave all the reps a guideline for the protocol of referral of these matters. NSWWBA has policies regarding discrimination and harassment on the website and this should be consulted when necessary.

Regional Reps were given an overview of the responses received regarding Pennants and were able to discuss implications of all the different suggestions. It was very helpful to get the input of the people representing most areas of the State in analysing the data and seeing the initial trends coming from the replies. Pam Hockings was able to explain the pros and cons of each of the suggestions and a lot of beneficial discussion occurred.

The two meetings held this year have provided an opportunity for Regional Reps and members of the board to understand what is happening at grass roots level of the sport, and to offer each other advice and support.

It has been my pleasure to work with this enthusiastic group and hope that we can persuade more people in the unrepresented regions to apply as RR's. The more we work together for the enjoyment of bowls for all members the stronger our clubs will become.

State Team Manager Daphne Shaw This has been a very successful year for the State side, winning the Prestigious Annual Australian Side’s Marj Morris Trophy back to back. They also won two Test Series against Queensland, a loss in the one game Test against WA, and then lost a nail-biting Test Series against Victoria by one shot in the deciding Test. We also recorded a good win against ACT. The U-25’s also had resounding wins, finishing with a successful series against Queensland in June.

The Australian Titles for Over 65’s featured another victory for NSW last October, which 18

was very satisfying and showed the dedication of our senior players, after finishing out of a place the previous year. I have enjoyed my time with all of the girls and I hope to be given the opportunity to spur them on to more victories next year.

Back problems kept me housebound for the last series against Queensland. Thank you Jan Agar and Patricia Reynolds for a job well done looking after the two teams. Bryce Stewart was a great help, coaching the teams until we gained the services of Gary Willis in April. Gary’s contribution has been superb, bringing us his vast experience and knowledge of the game. He has an affinity with all of the teams and he and I work well together.

Junior Bowls Committee Sharyn Renshaw (Coach), John Rodis, Neil Bayo, and Co-ordinator Chris Green The NSW Juniors have had an impressive year with outstanding results and representative performances. The NSW vs QLD test (2-4 July 2012) at Mackay BC was the first representative match for the year with a number of players making their debut at this event. The new look team made an impression, on and off the green, setting the stage for a successful year.

The NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Exchange series at Port Macquarie, was next for the NSW State Side. With a number of players having been selected for the CHS side, other members of the NSW Under 18 squad were given an opportunity to represent at State level.

The North Launceston Bowling Club hosted the 2012 Australian U18 Championships. NSW performed solidly in both the boys and girls events claiming 2nd in boys and girls and overall champion state results. NSW achieved 1 Gold Medal, 3 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals from the 8 disciplines. Following the event, NSW players featured prominently in the Australian U18 Squad selections. Selected players included: Natalie Noronha (Warilla), Samantha Noronha (Warilla), Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow), Ellen Ryan (Goulburn Railway), Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park), Billy Johnson (Belrose) and Dylan Skinner (Figtree RSL).

Natalie Noronha, Samantha Noronha, Ellen Ryan, Dylan Skinner and Billy Johnson were selected in the Australian U18 team to compete in the Trans Tasman.

The Annual City vs Country fixture was held at Cabramatta in November 2012 with the City side turning the tables on last year’s result defeating the Country side 3-0. Following the series the 2013 NSW State Squad was announced.

Taren Point BC hosted the first State Squad training camp in January 2013. Members received on green coaching plus information on goal setting, etiquette, measuring performance and healthy eating patterns. Directions for the upcoming year were established at this camp. The Squad returned to Taren Point over the Easter weekend for an intense training camp which included National squad drills, selection and competition based games, pre shot routine focus and mini tournaments. Off green activities are vital for the development and succuss of the squad. These activities included: ASADA Anti Doping session, stretching and fitness, nutritionist, sports psychologist and a motivational guest speaker session.

The final Interstate fixture of the year saw the NSW boys and girls at Taren Point in May to compete against an ACT development side consisting of U18 and U25 rep players. Both NSW sides performed extremely well and dominated the series to win 2-0 in both the boys and girls, winning a total of 15 of the 16 games contested.

The development of junior bowls at both participation and elite levels throughout NSW would not be possible without the continued support and contributions from all the event sponsors, hosts and squads sponsors. A very special thank you goes to all individuals and clubs who put in tireless hours into making NSW such a successful state in junior bowls.

Fours – The Newcastle (Zone 2) quartet of Jamie Dow (Redhead), Corey Reid (Swansea), Brandon Stacey (Swansea) and Jack Ryan (Swansea) won the 2012 NSW State Junior Fours Champions, winning a great final over the Illawarra (Zone 16) four of Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow), Sam Noronha (Warilla), Nat Noronha (Warilla) and Dylan Skinner (Figtree RSL), with a final score of 19-16.

2012 NSW Under 18 Girls Singles and Pairs (Sponsored by Zone 16) Singles – St Johns Park’s Jena Mileto became the 2012 NSW Junior Girls Singles Champion after defeating Molly Wilton (Mailtand City) 21-20.

Pairs – Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow) and Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park) won the 2012 NSW Junior Girls Pairs Champions after a flawless display of conversion and draw shots in their 21-2 victory over Jesscia Cousley (Wagga RSL) and Tracey-Lee Swift (Goulburn Railway) in the final.

2012 Junior Gold Nugget Invitation Singles NSW had numerous players invited to attend the Junior Gold Nugget with some outstanding performances from our Juniors. NSW Samantha Noronha was the winner of this prestigious event.

2013 South Pacific Junior Bowls Carnival The winner of the U16 singles event was Jay Breust defeating Jordan Taylor in the final. U18 singles, Greg Jeans defeated Dawn Hayman in the final to win that division. U18 pairs Sam Naronha and Billy Johnson took out the event defeating Jordan Taylor and Danyon Christie in the final.

2013 Australian Open Under 18 Singles NSW had a large contingent of players taking part in this event with great performances in the U18 singles event and the open level events. The U18 boys singles event was won by NSW Jono Davis with NSW Natalie Noronha taking second place in the girls.

When country bowlers are hospitalised in Sydney areas, we endeavour to visit them when possible, and also speak to them by telephone. The Air Ambulance Service transports these country bowlers.

Finance Portfolio Report Pam Andrich As I write this report I am nearing the end of my first year on the Board of NSWWBA with the honour of holding the Finance portfolio.

It gives me pleasure to report that the financial year ended with an overall net profit of $109,443. It has been a challenging year with the gradual decline in interest rates and a drop in membership, with the result of reduced income from affiliation fees.

A grant of $30,000 was received from NSW Communities together with sponsorships totalling $60,000. Sponsorships are an integral part of our income for events and require ongoing negotiating to secure these amounts.

It is worth noting the valuation of our property stands at $1.8ml.

As the financial road ahead is unpredictable, tight management of Association funds is essential to meet budget expectations, however we are ever mindful of the needs of the membership. Our greatest challenge of increasing membership numbers is at the forefront of our agenda and with ongoing diligence we are all working hard to achieve our goal.

I wish to commend our Finance Manager Janine Kerr for her excellence in keeping our books and her dedication to the loyalty of the Association. Janine’s support is always very much appreciated and the same applies to our other members of staff, Selam, Renee and Kate. Not forgetting Alex who spent most of this year with us as Marketing Manager before her resignation.

In closing I wish to thank Nicky Bethwaite our CEO and Stan Moriarty our Auditor for their help and support throughout the year.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2013 The financial statements cover the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association Inc. as an individual entity. New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association Inc. is an Association incorporated in New South Wales under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009.

The financial statements were authorised for issue on 26th August 2013 by members of the Board.

NOTE 1 — STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of Preparation The financial statements are general purpose financial statements that have been prepared in accordance with Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. The Association is a not-forprofit entity for financial reporting purposes under Australian Accounting Standards.

Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would result in financial statements containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions to which they apply. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are presented below and have been consistently applied unless otherwise stated.

The financial statements, except for the cash flow information, have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The amounts presented in the financial statements have been rounded to the nearest dollar.

Accounting Policies a.

Income Tax The income of the Association is exempt from income tax in terms of Section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

b.

Inventories Inventories consist of publications, badges and assorted mementos and are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on an average cost basis and include direct costs and appropriate overheads, if any.

c.

Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

Property Strata title land and buildings are shown at their fair value (being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm’s length transaction), based on periodic, but at least triennial, valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation for buildings.

Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation surplus in equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are recognised in profit or loss.

Any accumulated depreciation at the date of revaluation is eliminated against the gross carrying amount of the asset and the net amount is restated to the revalued amount of the asset.

Plant and equipment Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis and are therefore carried at cost less depreciation and impairment losses. In the event the carrying amount of plant and equipment is greater than the estimated recoverable amount, the carrying amount is written down immediately to the estimated recoverable amount. A formal assessment of recoverable amount is made when impairment indicators are present.

No impairment loss has been recorded in the current financial year.

Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fixed assets, including building, is depreciated on a straight line basis over the asset’s useful life commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are: Class of Fixed Asset Depreciation Rate Building 3% Office furniture and equipment 20% - 33% The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed and adjusted, if appropriate, at each reporting period.

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and losses are included in the statement of NSWWBA Annual Report

comprehensive income. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings. d.

Financial Instruments Initial Recognition and Measurement Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the Association becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the Association commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (ie. trade date accounting is adopted).

Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transactions costs where the instrument is not classified as ‘at fair value through profit or loss’, in which case transaction costs are expensed to profit or loss immediately.

Classification and Subsequent Measurement Financial instruments are subsequently measured at either fair value or cost. (i)

Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss Financial assets are classified at ‘fair value through profit or loss’ when they are held for trading for the purpose of short term profit taking. Such assets are subsequently measured at fair value with changes in fair value (ie. gains or losses) being recognised in profit or loss. The Association has not held any financial asset at fair value through profit or loss in the current or comparative year.

(ii) Held-to-maturity investments Held-to-maturity investments are non-derivative financial assets that have fixed maturities and fixed or determinable payments, and it is the Association’s intention to hold these investments to maturity. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method. (iii) Available-for-sale financial assets Available-for-sale financial assets are non-derivative financial assets that are either not capable of being classified into other categories of financial assets due to their nature, or are designated as such by management. They comprise investments in the equity of other entities where there is neither a fixed maturity nor fixed or determinable payments.

Financial Instruments (Cont’d) (iv) Financial Liabilities Non-derivative financial liabilities (excluding financial guarantees) are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

Impairment At the end of each reporting period, the Association assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial instrument has been impaired. In the case of available–for-sale financial instruments, a prolonged decline in the value of the instrument is considered to determine whether impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are immediately recognised in profit or loss. Also, any cumulative decline in fair value previously recognised in other comprehensive income is reclassified to profit or loss at this point.

Derecognition Financial assets are derecognised where the contractual rights to receipt of cash flows expires or the asset is transferred to another party, whereby the Association no longer has any significant continuing involvement in the risks and benefits associated with the asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related obligations are either discharged, cancelled or expire. The difference between the carrying value of the financial liability extinguished or transferred to another party and the fair value of consideration paid, including the transfer of non-cash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in profit or loss.

e.

Employee Benefits Provision is made for the Association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled. Employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made for those benefits. These cash flows are discounted using market yields on national government bonds with terms to maturity that match the expected timing of cash flows.

Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

g.

Revenue and Other Income Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and the cessation of all involvement in those goods.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which, for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Revenue from the provision of membership subscriptions is recognised on a receipts basis for the financial year to which it relates.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

h.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST receivable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the Statement of Financial Position.

Cash flows are presented in the Cash Flow Statement on a gross basis. The GST components of cash flows arising from investing or financing activities, which are recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO are presented as operating cash flows included in receipts from customers or payments to suppliers.

Comparative Figures When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year.

Accounts Payable and Other Payables Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the company during the reporting period which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

k.

Key Estimates Impairment The Association assesses impairment at the end of each reporting period by evaluation of conditions and events specific to the Association that may be indicative of impairment triggers. Recoverable amounts of relevant assets are reassessed using value-in-use calculations which incorporate various key assumptions.

Financial Risk Management Policies The Association’s finance director is responsible for, amongst other issues, monitoring and managing financial risk exposures of the Association. The finance director’s overall risk management strategy seeks to ensure the Association meets its financial targets, whilst minimising potential adverse effects of cash flow shortfalls. (a) Credit Risk: The maximum exposure to credit risk, excluding the value of any collateral or other security, at balance date to recognised financial assets is the carrying amount, net of any provisions for doubtful debts, as disclosed in the Statement of Financial Position and Notes to the Financial Statements.

The Association does not have any material credit risk exposure to any single debtor or group of debtors under financial instruments entered into by the Association. (b) Net Fair Values: Methods and assumptions used in determining net fair value.

The net fair values of assets and liabilities approximates their carrying value. No financial assets and financial liabilities are readily traded on organised markets in standardised form.

Financial assets where carrying amount exceeds net fair values have been written down to the net fair value.

The aggregate net fair values and carrying amounts of financial assets and liabilities are disclosed in the Statement of Financial Position and in these notes.

Solicitors — Kemp Strang / Lander & Rogers During the last twelve months, in the course of compiling the Constitutions and By-Laws of the Association, Districts and Clubs, we engaged the services of the Melbourne firm of sports lawyers, Lander & Rogers to ensure compliance with the State laws.

More recently we have employed the Sydney firm of Kemp Strang and the Association thanks these two firms for their assistance.

Auditors — Pringle Moriarty & Co Mr Stan Moriarty of Pringle Moriarty & Company continued to assist the Association in all aspects of financial matters, working closely with our accounts and Finance Director Pam Andrich and Finance Manager Janine Kerr, and his assistance has been greatly appreciated.
