This months “Meet a bowler” is Jenny Roberts who plays for Lake Cathie situated 12 km south of Port Macquarie.

Jenny has four daughters and thirteen grandchildren. It sounds like Jenny has a very full and interesting life with lots of different hobbies and travels around the world in the mix. Thank you Jenny for sharing a little of your life with us.

In Around the Greens Condong has a story about their scheme to work with disabled bowlers. Through that great work they received a Certificate of Achievement in Sport and Leisure at the recent Tweed Community Awards.

Congratulations Condong.

The Howard shield, an annual tournament held between the Illawarra District and Newcastle District was hosted by Raymond Terrace. This result was put in by the Illawarra District Secretary Barbara Roser.

Also in Around the Greens is a poem written

by Valerie Ellis in 1992. This was read by her daughter Carol Groch at Warilla’s 50th Birthday celebrations and I thought it would be nice to share it with everyone.

There is still a backlog of Club Championships and Competitions, so don’t despair if you can’t see your results in print. Even though this is the last month to get your 2014 results in print the backlog will go over to the May/June magazine.

In the General News section, congratulations go to Gwen Carpenter a Foundation Member of Gladesville who was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours.

The Match Report gives a point by point on the new rules keeping a score card.

While the umpires report covers the requirements for the use of adhesive marking temporarily fixed to a bowl (i.e. bowls stickers) which have changed with the introduction of the Crystal Marks 3rd edition of the Laws of the sport of Bowls.

NSW WOMEN’S BOWLERS PAST PRESIDENT’S ASSOCIATION The current Secretary, Beryl Warwick, lives in Nowra, and due to her health is now unable to travel by train to Sydney to attend the Committee meetings. These meetings are held every two months at 10:00am on the 4th Friday at Women’s Bowls NSW head office.

A Secretary is urgently required to come on board to take Beryl’s place. Please consider this request – the position is very interesting.

Edna Arnold is still Publicity Officer for which the Association is grateful to Edna for carrying out these duties.

The Committee proposes to hold a Christmas luncheon on Wednesday November 25, 2015 at the Masonic Club, 169 Castlereagh Street, Sydney. We must guarantee 20 people, with a maximum of 40 to attend. NSW Test Series against QLD & VIC

REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES Administratively, the state is split up into clubs, districts and regions.

The numbers in each are – 487 clubs, 47 districts and 16 regions.

Regional representatives are appointed annually by the Board to assist with communication between the head office and districts. Prior to each WBNSW AGM in September, anyone interested in being a Regional Representative is invited to submit an Expression of Interest for consideration.

Responsibilities of the Regional Representative include liaising with and assisting the Districts within their region and reporting on District matters at the Regional Representatives’ meetings held at least twice a year at head office in Sydney.

Meetings should be held with District Representatives at least every 3 months, but this does not mean that Regional Representatives have an automatic right to attend District Meetings as this is dependent on invitations being issued by the Districts.

When it comes to Regional matches and play-offs the Regional Representative’s role is to assist the host District to co-ordinate those matches and should she be asked by the host District, present any prizes to be awarded. It is not the Regional Representative’s role to run these events but the District Match Committee’s.

The Ashes was held this year at Chermside in Brisbane with NSW fielding the same team of 12 players. We knew we were in for a battle against Queensland who came out fighting and played very strongly throughout. The expected fast greens were instead a lot slower, and tricky, gusty winds made things difficult. That being said, Queensland adapted well and handled the conditions more easily.

1st Test 17th February 2015 The first Test was a close run contest with two of the NSW teams starting slowly and the third playing very well. The Queenslanders fought hard and with some excellent play emerged the winners by just 6 shots over all. (56 - 62) 2nd 17th February 2015 In the second Test Queensland came out firing, scored with multiples, and NSW struggled to make any headway against them, going down 2 rinks to 1. (52 - 64) 3rd 18th February 2015 In the third Test which was a dead rubber, NSW were playing for pride and were determined to prevent Queensland from winning a clean sweep. This time it was we who came out fighting and all three teams put it up to Queensland with some really good teamwork and a greatly improved performance. Despite a close loss on 2 rinks a huge score by one team was enough to get us over the line. (64 - 52) Despite the loss to Queensland, we still have a team who has the potential to be a determined and formidable force in the next series against Victoria and later at the Sides Championships in April.

Both senior and under 25 years teams travelled to Wagga Wagga this year to meet the challenge from Victoria on greens that were a far cry from those in Queensland. This time they were very fast running and tested everyone’s skills to the limit especially in hot and windy conditions on the first day.

1st Test 4th March 2015: Play commenced at 1pm and wins on two rinks were enough to give NSW a flying start with all teams playing well despite the very hot conditions. The wind also made life difficult for everyone, but NSW handled it well to post a good winning margin. (69 - 43) 2nd Test 4th March 2015: A late afternoon start saw the games carry on into the night under lights. This brought some relief with a slightly cooler temperature.

NSW continued strongly with players for the most part performing very well and an even more convincing two rink win wrapped up the series, much to everyone’s delight. (71 - 40) 3rd Test 5th March 2015: Although this was a dead rubber, Victoria got off to a better start and by the 13th end we were trailing by 13 shots overall. Then it all became serious and NSW put their heads down, getting right back into the games with steady scoring on consecutive ends, and by the 18th end were only 3 shots adrift. A final hard push and 10 unanswered shots saw NSW edge over the line by 4 to make it a clean sweep. (63 - 59) With the Australian Sides Championships in Perth fast approaching this was a good opportunity for NSW to fine tune their game, and so it proved with an outstanding result.

UNDER 25 SERIES: This was a disappointing uphill battle for NSW with just three wins in the series, in pairs and triples. Despite good play from some, NSW continued to struggle throughout and Victoria, who adapted better to the conditions should be congratulated on some fine bowling.

Congratulations and thanks must go to the Wagga Rules Club for their excellent running of the event. We couldn’t have asked for more and both the ladies and men involved, and the Green Keepers, did a wonderful job.

Some minor positional changes to two teams paid dividends and outcomes improved considerably.

– Mary Engelbreit 86th State Carnival Our Carnival is the most anticipated event on our calendar and after a break of 2 years we’re delighted to be returning to the beautiful Port Macquarie-Hastings region at the end of May. This year 896 players and countless spectators will arrive hoping to play and watch the best bowls on the east coast. All the plans are now in place for a great week - hope to see you at the Port City Dinner, at each of the participating clubs over 3 days and then the finals at Port City on Thursday and Friday. Don’t forget the Member Forum also at Port City - 2pm ‘till 4pm Sunday 24 May. Safe travelling everyone!

Bowls NSW Presentation Dinner My thanks to the Bowls NSW Board for their kind invitations extended to our Association to attend the Annual Presentation Dinner celebrating excellence for the 2014 season, held at the Kirribilli Club, a great new venue with a wonderful view and interesting company. An exciting night for all the nominees and congratulations to those who won awards, each and everyone deserving their nomination. Amongst the many highlights, a couple deserving a mention the youngest ever Junior Bowler of the Year - 13 year old magician Jono Davis and Senior Bowler of the Year Crawford Linton. A great year for both winners!

I was also delighted to meet His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor of New South Wales and Mrs Hurley. As you know, Mrs. Hurley has agreed to be our Patron following the retirement of Dame Marie Bashir, and I look forward to an opportunity in the near future for Mrs Hurley to visit our offices.

New South Wales versus Queensland Always a hard fought battle when these two States get together for the annual Test, and this series played at Chermside Bowling Club February 17-18, was no exception. Queensland were desperate to win having lost to New South Wales the past four years and with the first two tests going Queensland’s way, the last test with a great deal of pride at stake was won by New South Wales. Congratulations to the Queenslanders, a marvellous effort and a deserving win. Read more in Bowls Matters.

Well done to the New South Wales Men’s side on retaining the trophy and our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Chermside Bowling Club for their impeccable hospitality, generosity and organisation for the series.

Sport NSW Awards The 2014 Sports Awards were held at the prestigious Curzon Hall on February 19, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the NSW Sports Awards. An inspiring night that recognised the NSW Athlete of the Year, coaches, administrators, volunteers, masters and young athletes and athletes and teams with a disability. Pam Hockings, WBNSW guests and myself were delighted to support our own Karen Murphy, a finalist in the NSW Athlete of the Year category.

Congratulations must go to the winner Stephanie Gilmore, winner of three major surfing titles during 2014. Our best wishes and gratitude to Karen, a great person and competitor who has given so much to the sport of bowls and without doubt will continue to do so well into the future.

Regional Representatives Meeting Almost a full complement of Regional Representatives were present at the meeting held in our offices on February 25, when we welcomed new Representative Margaret Garvan, a member of Ramsgate RSL Bowling Club. Welcome Margaret, as Regional Representative for Region 13. I’m sure you will enjoy your new role, and no doubt the many members in your region will welcome you and benefit greatly from your experience and knowledge in the sport of bowls.

Despite good bowling from some, the Under 25s unfortunately were not able to match the ability and determination of their Victorian opponents. Our Side Manager Joan presented the trophy to her Victorian counterpart reluctantly but with congratulations to each member on their decisive win, promising to win it back next time.

All of us enjoyed the hospitality, the well organised program and the generosity of all those involved in planning the two days spent at the Wagga Wagga Rules Club, our thanks to everyone! Congratulations to the Bowls New South Wales Open Side on winning their series, their Under 25s sadly met the same fate as our Under 25s, but also promising to reverse the result in 2016.

Topics discussed included the filling of management positions, differences between suspensions of members from either the Women’s Club or the registered club, the Dress Policy and many others, far too many to detail here. Your Regional Rep should bring you up to date with all the important issues at a meeting in your District soon.

Are you a victim or the cause?

Our office continues to receive calls from distressed members regarding unpleasant incidents that have arisen in their clubs, either against themselves or against other members. In most cases these issues have been identified as either bullying, harassment, victimisation, vilification or vexatious! VEXATIOUS - is where the person making the complaint has no other agenda than to create trouble for another member.

Further questions in this case to ask are: is it truthful or gossip? Is it something positive about the other person? What benefit might be gained by the person making the complaint? Once an issue begins, the damage has been done and can never be taken back.

New South Wales versus Victoria With only a two week break after the Queensland encounter, our Open Side, Under 25s, Coach Gary Willis, State Side Manager Joan Thomas and myself headed to Wagga Wagga Rules Club for the New South Wales v Victoria annual test. Arriving on Wednesday March 4, in time for a practice and then on to the first Test starting at 1pm in windy and hot conditions, NSW were off to a flying start with wins on two rinks, winning the first test. Well prepared for the second Test to be played under lights NSW continued with strong performances on each rink eventually putting the lid on the series. The third test, although a dead

As well as the issues referred to earlier, the Policy also includes information relating to Child Protection, Discrimination, Social Networking Sites, Complaints Procedures and many more important topics our members need to be aware of. THERE’S GOOD NEWS – AND BAD NEWS

The 2014 National Bowls Census has just been released and it has some very interesting figures for our sport.

There is both good and bad news – the good news is that the number of people regularly (more than 4 weeks’ attendance) picking up a bowl and enjoying the game has increased by 5.6% last year, the bad news is that those participating in formal competition have decreased by 9.2%.

This is reflected by the 4.0% drop across Australia in affiliated club membership.

The challenge for clubs and committees is how to cater for both forms of the game as it is now official that the greater proportion of people who bowl are more interested in the informal side of the sport. There is no question that we must maintain the formal competitive events, as these sustain the essence of the sport by providing the opportunity to strive for excellence, test our limits and provide a marker for improvement. It’s the part of the sport that develops the rules and gives us the framework that is essential to the game, but if we don’t provide events that cater for flexibility in playing times (evenings or weekends), shorter game formats and informal fun occasions, then we will miss out on a phenomenon that is being offered to us on a plate.

Informal bowls is developing a cachet for ‘cool’. It is not strenuous, anyone can do it,

the concept is simple (even if the execution is not) and the environment around informal bowls is casual and inviting that is appropriate for all ages. The challenge for our club committees is to actively embrace the informal bowlers by talking to them, finding out whether they need a hand, giving them a few tips on what to do and most importantly (but not aggressively) ensuring that information about the club’s bowling activities is easily to hand. Don’t just leave it to the club management on the basis that it is a ‘corporate’ event and doesn’t do anything for the bowls side of things. Of course it does, anything that is good for the registered club is good for the bowling club even if it takes some time to translate into membership. One thing is for certain, if there is hostility from the formal bowlers, there is no incentive to explore the game further at your club.

Rather it will generate complete alienation!

Is your committee up to this change in approach? We are several months away from AGMs and now is the time to think about who is on your committee and whether it would benefit from some new ideas. As we are in the throes of a state election, I have a confession to make – I am that dreaded person, a swinging voter. My thought is that whoever I vote

for must deserve my vote; I am not going to blindly follow some philosophy that is too simplified for words. More than that, I don’t vote for a party, I vote for a person because the variation within the party philosophies is very wide. It’s the same with committees – are they full of hot air or do they actually do something to make a difference? Is it lead by one loud voice or by a consensus after discussion? Is one person there because it’s considered ‘bad form’ to not vote for her? It’s amazing what happens when a vacancy occurs – perhaps not straight away but inevitably someone steps up to the plate.

The requirement for large numbers on committees is evaporating and this is partly due to technology (email and internet) and partly due to the easing of formalities in the sport. Combined committees are becoming the norm no matter what the size of the membership, and not all roles need to be filled. A specific skill set for the committee does need to be identified but almost more importantly, personalities that strive to be constructive and consultative are key to a committee that embraces change and new ideas. Give it some thought and act on your decision.

President Edna and Secretary Gladys were honoured to be invited as guests to the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day Leaders Lunch at Parliament House on Wednesday, February 25. The Honourable Jillian Skinner MD, Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research and also a member of the Rose family spoke regarding this cancer. It is the second most commonly diagnosed gynaecological cancer in Australia.

Each year a donation is made to the Garvan Institute which conducts research into this type of cancer.

We wish to thank the following clubs for donations recently received: Everglades, Manildra, Millthorpe, Blayney, Molong, Orange City, Newstead (Canobolas District Clubs) Harden District Bowling Club, Blacktown Workers, Coleambally (President Day Spider).

SCORE CARDS

With the recent new edition the Laws of the Sport, 3rd Edition, from World Bowls and the Domestic Rules from Bowls Australia we are focusing this month on a very important part of the game - The Score Card.

The biggest change to note from the previous 4 years is that now the second in a fours game is responsible for the score card.

Whoever has the responsibility for keeping the card in any form of the game must ensure the following duties are carried out.

1 Be responsible for the score card supplied by the Controlling Body while play is in progress.

2 Make sure the names of all players of both teams are correctly entered on the score card.

3 Record on the score card, all shots scored for and against both teams as each end is completed (no gaps in the columns.)

4 Compare and agree the score card with that of the opposing team as each end is completed.

5 At the end of the game, record on the score card the time that the game finished and then sign their own and the opposing score card.

These duties are outlined in Law 40.1.7 as duties of the skip, but Law 40.1.9 states that Member National Authorities (Bowls Australia), can transfer the skips duties in relation to the card and Domestic Rule (DR) 3.2 lists the persons responsible for the score card (and all its associated duties) :1 The Marker in a Singles game 2 The Skip of each team in a pairs game 3 The Skip of each team in a triples game 4 The Second of each team in a fours game. www.womensbowlsnsw.org

This is a non-negotiable area of the Laws as it uses the term SHALL which means MUST. If there is a legitimate reason that the designated person cannot keep the card, then advice should be sought from the Controlling Body.

A scoreboard cannot be used instead of a score card. (DR 3.1) Domestic Rule - DR 3.1.1 reads: The scoreboard may be updated at any time by any person, but MUST be updated at least every second end and the Skip is responsible for ensuring it is correct as per the scorecard except if the responsibility for the scorecard has been passed to the second in a Fours game - then the second is responsible for the accuracy of the scoreboard. This doesn’t mean only the second or skip can change the scoreboard, just that they are responsible for comparing the cards and boards in accordance with the format being played.

The WBNSW Conditions of Play for Association Events in Item # 7 states that the signing of the score card signifies agreement of the score and completion of the Match. Once the card is signed the scores shall not be altered.

If there is a mistake in scoring the following applies in accordance with the Conditions of Play for all our events:If during the course of the game, or at the conclusion - BEFORE the cards are signed, a mistake is discovered and the opponents cannot agree, then the Umpire shall be called and if no resolution is found, the end where the mistake occurred shall be declared a nil score end (tied end) and the cards adjusted accordingly.

No extra ends are required to be played, as a tied end means that neither team scores on that end and the scores are carried down, without change and then the regular scoring continues.

It is in the best interests of the players to come to an agreement regarding this error, and fair play, sportsmanship and common sense should come to the fore should this situation arise.

If a player has to leave the green during a game and cannot return, the Umpire or Controlling Body can approve the introduction of a substitute. The word “SUB” must be clearly printed on the cards, beside the name of the constituted player and the name of the substitute must be printed in the margin and signed by the Controlling Body immediately the substitute player joins the game. It is the responsibility of the Skip to have a substitute signed in before or during each match.

It was decided last year to create uniformity across all forms of the game, that for all events we direct that YOUR CLUB’s name and team are listed FIRST on your score cards. This means that the two cards in any team game should be a mirror image and care should be taken when transferring the scores from the reverse to the front of the Score cards at the completion of the game.

The Home team remains first on the Score Boards and Result sheets during Pennant games and we recommend that when allocating whose name goes first on the Score board during other games, it is the first side mentioned in the Draw. For social games, or where there is no official draw, then whoever wins the toss may be put first on the Score Board, but this is a matter for agreement between the keepers of the score cards.

WBNSW supplies all cards for Events that they are in attendance, i.e. WBNSW Indoor Singles, State Carnival, Champion of Champion Singles and Pairs, WBNSW Pennant Playoffs and State Championships.

For all State playoffs players are asked to bring a magnetic strip with their Club name for the Scoreboards to assist with officials and spectators monitoring the games in progress.

S G N I K R A M E AD[SHtiEckSerIs]VFor Bowls The requirements for the use of Adhesive Markings temporarily fixed to a bowl [i.e. Bowls Stickers] have changed with the introduction of the Crystal Mark 3rd Edition of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls.

52.1.8 The Controlling Body can supply adhesive [stick on] markings for players to temporarily fix to both sides of their bowls, or allow players to use their own markings. When these markings are used: •• 52.1.8.1 they are part of the bowl for all purposes under the Laws of the Sport of Bowls •• 52.1.8.2 there must be only one layer of markings fixed to either side of the bowl •• 52.1.8.3 they must not be put over the serial number and the World Bowls Stamp which are present on the bias side of the bowl; and •• 52.1.8.4 all bowls belonging to players within a team or side must have these markings on them and the markings must all be the same design and colour. However, players may use markings which are different in size from those used by other players in their team or side where this is necessary due to differences in the sizes of the manufacturers’ rings on the bowls.

•• 52.1.8.5 If opposing teams or sides have the same design or colour of markings and an alternative is not available, players in the team or side listed second in the draw must remove their markings.

In addition, the Bowls Australia Domestic Regulation 4.7.4 [in accordance with Law 52.1.8] allows that the Distinctive mark [i.e. engraved picture or emblem on each set of bowls] may be covered on the bias side.

GUIDELINES FOR COMPLIANCE: •• Players in a team or side may use markings that are different in size. The adhesive markings [stickers] must, however, be the same design and colour and where used must be adhered to both sides of the bowl •• On the bias side [the small ring] the sticker may be a small ring and/or the dot. The small ring and/or dot may cover the distinctive mark [engraving] but must not cover the World Bowls stamp or serial number •• It is acceptable for one or more members or a team/side to use a small ring and another use the dot [these are stickers of different size] •• The stickers used on the bias side of the bowls may be partially trimmed to ensure that the World Bowls Stamp and serial number remain visible •• It is acceptable for players to have the rings cut into sections, accommodating the large distinctive mark [engraving] now found on some models of bowls. Further, it is acceptable for only some members of the team/side to have the rings cut into sections •• It is not contrary to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls for the sticker used on the non-bias side [i.e. the large ring] to partly cover the distinctive mark [engraving] on the nonbias side; and •• The adhesive markings [stickers] must be applied to each set of your bowls in the same way [e.g. if the dot is used on the bias side, it must be used on each of your bowls used in that match].

4. Dianne [who was replaced in Team E] recovers from her illness better than expected. She has been asked to act as a substitute in another team in the same event. Can she do this?

5. Team F and G have a matched bye in the Club Championship Fours. One of Team G’s players Jan, has taken ill and will be unavailable for the event. What will Team G have to do?

8. The lead in Team A delivers the jack which passes the 2 metre mark.

Before it comes to rest Skip A picks it up assuming that it will not reach the ditch and places it on the 2 metre mark. Skip B objects. What should happen?

9. In a fours game thirds A and B have each played their first bowl when it is noticed second A has only played one bowl. Can second A play her second bowl?

10. During a triples match a severe gust of wind moves the jack. What should happen?

ANSWERS 1. Skip B is correct. If an end has started but all the required bowls have not been played, it must be declared dead. Law 32.2

Constituted players are ineligible to act as substitutes in any other team in the same competition. DR 2.3.5

8. The jack has been obstructed by a player of its own team therefore Team B’s lead must place the mat and redeliver the jack but must not play first. Law 38.1.1.1

Cohesion Team & Side

–noun {Koh-hee-zhuh n}

1. The act or state of uniting or sticking together as one.

Cohesion is required in a team or side to be united in their pursuit of their goals and objectives. This indicates that there would be at least two important dimensions in team cohesion i.e. task cohesion and social cohesion.

Task Cohesion reflects the way members of a team or club work together to achieve identifiable and specific goals for which the team was formed.

Social Cohesion reflects the degree of compatibility members of a team exhibit outside of training and competition.

The two types of cohesion can work independently. A team of recreational bowlers will try to win matches, but are more likely to focus on the social aspect of the game rather than the training and task oriented preparation to achieve their goal. On the other side the teams that are highly focused on their task goals have little or no interest in the social objective.

The best results for a team, side or club are obtained when social and task cohesion are developed equally.

The two major elements of cohesion are communication and interaction. These two increase as the side or club becomes more cohesive and side members talk more openly and exchange ideas as well as relevant information more candidly. As side/team cohesiveness increases so does the social approval and sticking to the side “norms”.

Always be aware to adopt strategies in order to reduce the possibility of new players being left out. Effective communication is essential between coach and bowlers, respect and trust form the foundation where all contributions are welcome and appreciated.

There is no room for sarcasm or ridicule of each other or of training methods.

Team/side goal setting lays the base for good cohesion. Goals should be discussed and set to focus on the process of success rather than the outcome. Winning should not be the stated goal, better to control the variables that will see them achieve the ultimate goal. Team goals must be evaluated often and provision must be made for this to happen in a well-balanced training programme. Pennant sides need total clarity in their goals they wish to achieve, a plan that unites them for a least one training session a week either at the home club or another venue is a must. Teams excelling in their designated roles should be recognised and verbally rewarded with praise. A coach’s goal is to have all teams fulfilling their goals and potential and it is important that all bowlers strive towards performance that brings praise and recognition. Players come and go from clubs and a conscious commitment is required from all members and existing personnel to ensure a smooth and amicable transition.

Every club has their nonconformist, the person that doesn’t conform to the accepted team or social standards of behaviour; the one who appears just in time for the cards to be called and leaves straight after the game; those that hold officials to ransom with threats to transfer or not be available if not selected to play in their preferred team, opposes training or takes no part at all. These people lack cohesion and will rarely achieve any advancement in their bowling careers. Take care of all your club bowlers; non selection in competitive or club games creates untold damage to club cohesion and unity. Investigate on a practical level the on green and off green strategies that can be carried out with any given team or side which will help promote cohesion and club unity within your club. International Bowls for the Disabled

WorldChampionships

14 participants plus Manager and Coach assembled at Sydney Airport for a “trip of a lifetime” to represent Australia in the DBA Nationals.

Gold and green tracksuits were proudly worn and excitement was in the air.

Carolyn Nelson (Engadine) and Lynn Smith (Roselands Flames) were the NSW Women representatives.

Practice was on the first day and then the competition commenced the next. After an impressive march-on with 11 countries represented, mixed pairs was played in the various classifications in a 4X4 format.

Carolyn Nelson (NSW) and Tony Bonnell (QLD) won gold in the B6. On Sunday the Singles competition commenced with 21 up format. Once again the Singles were in different classifications with some having two divisions necessitating semis and finals.

Carolyn gained a bronze in the B6 only losing one game. Congratulations!

The weather was perfect except for a cloudburst one morning where the volunteers swept the water off the green and play commenced at 10am. The bowling clubs were set in picturesque valleys with mountains surrounding them.

The volunteers were fantastic and the organisation by the Clubs and the DBA officials was excellent.

Overall Australia gained 4 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze and gained 5th place. There were no representatives in the Visually Impaired.

The Closing Ceremony with the national flags being raised and the anthems played for the gold winners was spectacular.

Coach, Jan Palazzi and Manager, Rosemary Packham kept everyone on their toes and led a happy, supportive team.

This was a “dream come true”, a wonderful experience with many friendships made and excellent bowls played.

Umpire Educators Course

In February twenty four Umpires from around the State were invited to attend a two day course held at Cabramatta Bowling Club.

The Umpires were there to train and be assessed to become Umpire Educators. This has been necessary because of the New Umpires system introduced by Bowls Australia this year. The whole way of becoming an umpire has changed, as has reaccreditation.

Therefore ladies have had to train in the New Way of Presenting.

Denise Huender, who has a Certificate 1V in Train the Trainer (a requirement by BA) was our main presenter and assessor, assisted by Kathy Chatillon and Lesley Swales.

The ladies were firstly put through the Markers Course and then covered the Measurers and Umpires Components over the 2 days.

They were assessed at each level and certainly worked very hard to achieve the required competency. It was also great that these ladies had the opportunity to meet their peers from around the State and their time, effort and enthusiasm was greatly appreciated.

Thanks go to Cabramatta Bowling Club who provided their facilities for the two days. They looked after everyone very well. Also thanks to Denise and Kathy who gave up their time at such short notice.

After this course there are now 25 trained Umpire Educators throughout the Regions in NSW. With more to be trained in the future.

Now ladies, please take advantage of this new system.

This is your opportunity to support the inaugural event and ensure its continuity. We are trying to make this as flexible as possible and encourage your participation.

Basic Conditions of Play: To be played twilight/evenings to allow members still in the workforce to compete.

Attire: Players can wear their Club Uniform or any other bowls attire that has the BA logo on all garments. Players in the team do not need to be dressed the same.

Format: 3 bowl pairs - 2 five end sets with a 1 end tie break if required. No dead ends - Jack respotted on the T. We anticipate that games will be held in sectional format and the number of teams in each section will depend on the entries received at each Venue. This will be for the venue co-ordinator to organise. Following sectional play the section winners will play in an open draw, knockout event to achieve the eventual wnner.

If more than one District in a Region have nominated to be a Host, then the District winners will play off to get a Regional winner. This will be played in the most efficient format dependent on the number of District winners entered. If only one Host club in a Region has nominated, then the winner after they complete the event and all other Regional winners across the State will proceed to the State Mixed Pairs playoffs to be held Saturday 31st and Sunday 1st November to again allow members still in the workforce to compete, at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club. The State playoffs will also be sectional play and the number of games played will depend on the number of Regional winners entered. Following the completion of sectional play the section winners will play knockout to achieve a State title winner.

All players are encouraged to look at the WBNSW Website where a list of the Host Clubs who have expressed interest in hosting this inaugural event and been successful are listed. It is up to players to show some initiative and contact the Host venue for event details in your area to ensure this event continues.

TONI ROSE ROBSON This is the story of a remarkable lady who joined Taren Point, in May 2013.

One Tuesday in May 2013 I was called to reception to meet a lady who wanted to join the club. This lady was Toni Rose Robson, who, as it turned out, is both profoundly deaf and without speech.

This aside, we managed to organise her application and her transfer from another club. I have to admit I had some reservations as to how Toni Rose would fit in, particularly as we are such a big club, 60 to 70 ladies in the club each Tuesday and Thursday.

I need not have worried, right from the start the ladies at Taren Point have been both welcoming and helpful to Toni Rose and she has fitted in magnificently. She joined in May and at the AGM at the end of July she took a position on the Social Committee and has taken up the task again for 14/15. Social at Taren Point involves a lot of work having so many members and hosting many District and State events but Toni Rose takes it all in her stride.

Toni Rose also participates in club activities, plays in the club championships, District Championships, Pennants and is a sought after player for Carnivals often playing third.

As well as all this she is an active participant in Deaf Bowls. She played in the Australian Deaf Games in Sydney 2003, Gold Coast 2008, Geelong 2012, the International Deaf Bowls in Perth in 2011, National Deaf Lawn Bowls in Adelaide 2006, Adelaide 2010 and Mareeba 2014. She also won the NSW Women’s Deaf Singles Championship in 2009 and 2014. A great effort.

As the Secretary of Taren Point I have been very proud of my members for the way they have embraced Toni Rose into the life of Taren Point, someone is always at the ready with pencil and paper to tell her what rink she is playing on and anything else she needs to know from the announcements each morning. But the thing that moved me to write this article occurred during the Club Consistency. I went out to the green to give a message to one of the ladies and there was Toni Rose marking a Consistency game and the players were happily playing. I was so proud of my members and of Toni Rose, it brought tears to my eyes. To me this was the ultimate measure of true sportsmanship, camaraderie and friendship that makes my club, Taren Point, such a great place to be.

OAM for GWEN CARPENTER of Gladesville Gladesville Women’s Bowling club members were thrilled when Gwen Carpenter, their member and Patron, was awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours List announced by the Governor General on Monday January 26, 2015. She is a Foundation Member of the club which was formed in 1961 and has continuously held office in almost every position for the last 54 years and is currently Treasurer. Gwen was made a Life Member of the club in 1983.

In addition to her long career at Gladesville, Gwen was also Secretary to Bennelong District Coaching Panel 1986; Secretary to Bennelong District 1987-1989; elected Vice President of the NSW Women’s Bowling Association 1999-2002; Coach to the Australian Blind Bowlers Association 19921997 and Carer and Support Person to their Commonwealth Games team in 1994. A War Widow for over 30 years, Gwen reared three daughters, has six granddaughters, four great granddaughters and three great grandsons. Although a busy mother, coach and committee member she still found time to enter and win the club’s major singles championship six times and every major club event over the years. She also enjoyed considerable success as a member of the club’s pennant teams.

In 2002 Gwen was honoured by the NSW Women’s Bowling Association and presented with a Merit Badge reflecting her many years of service to the Association.

In recognition of the ongoing local role and contribution she has made, a perpetual bowls event was established in the annual Bowls Calendar at Gladesville Women’s Bowling Club in 2011 called the Gwen Carpenter Shield.

The Gladesville Women’s Bowling Club operates under the umbrella of the Gladesville Bowling and Sports Club Ltd (Sporties). In addition to her roles within the Women’s Bowling Club, Gwen was elected to the Board of Directors of the GB&SC in 2001 and served in the capacity of Vice President (Director) until July 2012. During that time Gwen provided service to the club as Minute Secretary, Female Staff Liaison Officer, Assistant Treasurer and Meeting Organiser. Life Membership was bestowed on Gwen by the membership in 2013.

In 2015, Gwen Carpenter continues to work for the Club to fulfil her role as Committee Member and Patron, participating meaningfully in the day to day activities and assisting with the management of the organisation which she joined 53 years ago. She is universally held in high esteem by the membership as a mentor and friend.

Increasing

PARTICIPATION CLUB PARTICIPATION The concept of ensuring your club is inclusive and accessible is a complex topic. For a club to maintain its long term sustainability and grow its membership, it is very important for a club’s membership and activities to reflect the needs of its surrounding community.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) engaged research firm GfK Blue Moon to undertake comprehensive research, beyond the normal demographic variables to “to uncover, explore, establish and clearly articulate the different motivations, attitudes, needs and barriers that influence people’s decisions and behaviours in relation to sport and in particular, participation in club based sport.”

In May 2013, the ASC released its report titled “Market Segmentation for Sport Participation – Adults 14-65 years old”. The following information is from the learning of this report.

BENEFITS OF CLUB MEMBERSHIP Clubs offer significant positive benefits for individuals and their communities including:

STRATEGIES CLUBS CAN USE TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN MEMBERS Make it easy to get involved The report indicated that 20% of people who want to get involved in a club do not know how to do so.

Clubs therefore need to invite the community to join their club in as many places as possible.

Most importantly clubs should have a website.

This is how many people search for information.

The website must have an open invitation to come and become involved in the club. It should list a club person’s name and contact details.

Remember though, websites only capture those people who consciously seek the club information. There are many people who wish to become part of a club but are not actively seeking this information. The club could consider using the following form of invitations: •• Posters and flyers: Creating flyers with information about your membership (types, benefits and prices) and placing them all around the local community •• Letter box drops at the start of the season •• Using council communication to invite people to the club •• Social media invitations: Using tools like Facebook and Twitter to make the public aware of your membership opportunities •• Banners: The placement of banners and posters around your club advertising membership to people who may have only came into the club for one day to see what it’s like •• Newspaper Ads: A regular membership ad for your club in the local newspaper Club communication should promote inclusiveness and address perceptions that clubs are exclusive and membership is dependent on skill level.

Club communications should make it clear your club welcomes the diversity of their community, especially in terms of culture, age, gender and ethnicity.

Flexibility and enjoyment will drive participation Where possible, create a range of opportunities and options for people to participate at times which are convenient to potential new members.

This is particularly relevant where the club is creating activities which are focused more on participation, enjoyment and socialisation rather than competition and winning.

Create opportunities to invite potential members to try your activities and club facilities.

Running regular, free “come and try” opportunities to introduce your sport and club to potential members is a great way of breaking down barriers.

Try to create “come and try” events which have activities for all the family.

Strong social calendar Over half those surveyed indicated they joined their club for the social benefits.

For many the social benefits are the primary driver of their club membership so it is vital that the club has a vibrant social calendar which meets this very important need of its members.

Social events and activities also create an opportunity for members to bring potential members into the club in a fun setting and are a great way to overcome the perception of clubs being cliquey and exclusive.

Don’t fall into the trap of only creating social events as a way of making funds for your club.

At the AGM in October 2014, Beecroft awarded Life Membership to Carol Tindale. Carol is one of the long serving and hardest working members.

Jan Murray began bowling in 1974 at Grafton City. She was only twenty one at the time, being the youngest bowler affiliated with that Club. At the time there were not many bowlers of that age anywhere. Different matter now!

Outstanding service over many years was rewarded when Noela McCabe was honoured with Life Membership of Urunga Women’s Bowling at their quarterly meeting in December.

As well as the many numerous Club Championships she has won, she has brought glory to the Club with the winning of District and State events.

Carol has served a full 3 year term as President of the Women’s Club and later, when there was no nominee for the position, she undertook the Presidency again. Carol has had 5 terms as Chair of Match and has been on the Committee innumerable times, she has also been the Publicity Officer.

The money raised from the sale of her Pickles and the Christmas raffle of her Plum Pudding over the years has been much appreciated by the Club. Carol is always willing to provide prizes for any fund raising event and is currently the donor of the Ladies Major Singles Shield.

Through the many years Carol has been at the Club, she has always done her best to encourage and assist any new members. Her efforts for the Club behind the scenes are too numerous to mention and most members would have been unaware of her efforts.

Jan spent sixteen years at the Club playing lead all that time and still, to this day, can’t throw a good Kitty. Jan started with Red Rock-Corindi in 1990.

She blended in well with the Club as she spent most of her week-ends at Red Rock bowling in social games while still with Grafton. When Jan started playing at Red Rock full time, they realised she was no good with the Kitty and made her a second three weeks later. After three months Jan became a skip, a job she relished. Jan has served a full term as President, six years as Vice President, seventeen years as Selector and is in her tenth year as Secretary.

Since joining the Club in 1993 Noela has been a tireless and inconspicuous worker behind the scenes. She has served as chair of the Social Committee for the past 10 years and her fundraising, catering, organisational and master planning skills, especially for major functions, are legendary. Noela willingly and regularly forgoes her bowls and dedicates a great deal of her time to ensure the smooth running of the Club.

Congratulations Noela on a welldeserved honour.

She has also been on District Match Committee for six years and District Delegate for fifteen years. Jan is the only original Pennant Team member left in the Club winning the District Pennant in 1994, 2004,2005.

Jan only bowls socially now due to arthritis and other niggling complaints but is always present every bowls day, is the Pennant Manager and enjoys watching all the girls playing and having fun. To top off the year Jan was also awarded Life Membership to Club Ltd at their recent AGM.

BBWBC TO CENTRAL COAST HEALTH DISTRICT & CAMP BREAKAWAY

Charity cheque presentation Bateau Bay have been strong supporters of local charity and community groups over the years and on Thursday, November 27, 2014 they had special guests Jan Richens, Manager for Fundraising and Donations from Central Coast Health District and Sue Verhoek, General Manager Camp Breakaway joined them for lunch, where they were presented with $1,700 each, from the year’s fundraising.

A total of $3400 was raised over the year through raffles, special events and the ‘scottie tin’. Throughout the year any lady bowler who delivers a bowl on the wrong bias puts a gold coin donation in the ‘scottie tin’. Having a lot of new bowlers definitely helped the ‘scottie tin’, but even the most experienced player can make this simple mistake.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Just thought you may be interested in a photograph taken on Australia Day at the Barefoot Bowls Day conducted by Springwood Sports Club where our two year old granddaughter, Trinity Bunter, was given the opportunity to send a few jacks down. Her father, Greg, is a member of the Club and we, her grandparents, are former members of Springwood Sports Club and now members of Huskisson Bowling Club. One might say we are trying to ‘keep it in the family’.

President Sue Ryan and her committee were delighted to present the cheques.

Jan Richens explained the needed funds would be going towards care of inpatients and radiotherapy at Gosford Hospital and the day unit for chemotherapy and treatment, including the wig library at Wyong Hospital. Sue Verhoek from Camp Breakaway said that funding was particularly needed at that time of year and would go towards respite camps for the frail aged, intellectually delayed, dementia and young disabled clients and their families on the Central Coast. Both special guests Jan and Sue thanked and congratulated the committee and members of the Bateau Bay for their hard work and dedication to the community with their fundraising. It is highly appreciated.

WARILLA 50TH BIRTHDAY TWO GOLDEN DAYS IN A GOLDEN YEAR FOR WARILLA. Warilla Ladies celebrated their 50th Birthday over two fun packed days. On Monday February 9, Warilla President Carol Groch welcomed 110 guests to a Luncheon held in the Diamond Room. Mirrors in the centre of each table reflected the beautifully handmade white flowers surrounding gold painted leaves displayed in gold painted wine bottles.

Each guest received a welcome verse in a card made by Carol’s Mum, herself a past President from the South Coast, together with a Commemorative key-ring donated by Club Ltd. Distinguished guest State President Robyn Procter pinned Dorothy Barnes and Valerie Cartner with their Merit Badges and District President Thelma Lever presented District Minor Singles Wilma Orth and District and Zone Senior Fours Winners Julea Morgan, Trish Orgill, Marion Skinner and Lorraine Alaban with their Certificates. Other distinguished guests included Foundation Member May Orr, Patron and Life Member Helen Troy, Seven Past Presidents, Chairman Steve and General Manager Phil. Fifties music provided by a very talented duo appealed so much to the sexa,’ septua,’ octo’ and nonagenarians present, that the dance floor rocked well into the afternoon.

Tuesday February, 10 was a more genteel, bowls day, but a continuation of the celebrations, with Gold and white balloons and table decorations greeting the Lady Bowlers who all wore their 50th Birthday Shirt. Every member, received a shirt, donated by the very generous club.

Before bowls, 70 bowlers surrounded twentyfive Pennant Flags displayed on the green, these included twenty-four District Pennant Flags and One State Flag. It was special to hear everyone searching for and claiming the flag they had won many years ago.

Congratulations to President Carol and her ladies, thank you for two super days and Happy 50th Birthday, Warilla Women’s Bowling Club.

A dull cloudy day greeted the Clarence River lady bowlers who converged on Wooli Bowling Club on Thursday, November 13, for the District’s Annual Combined President’s Day.

COMMERCIAL CLUB ALBURY – CHARITY DAY Commercial Club Albury lady bowlers have supported the local Riding for the Disabled during the past 13 years through their Annual Charity Day. In combination with the support of the Mother Club $10,000.00 was raised in 2014; which when added to previous years totals amounts to in excess of $100,000.00.

So popular is this Charity fundraiser that many teams from the District, as well as from regional Victoria put the event on their bowls calendar from one year to the next. 26 teams competed last year –with the winning team comprising Commercial Club members Kath Baggeridge, Hazel Diffenthal, Hazel Sims and Faye McDonnell; Runners up were a team from the North Albury Club With support from the Commercial Club and its lady bowls members the main organisation each year has been undertaken by two very enthusiastic and hardworking individuals in Pat Smith and Fay White.

President of RDA Gwen Abikhair said on receiving the latest cheque ”Words cannot express how much the riders and members appreciate your wonderful help.”

Wooli’s President Colleen Brown handed the club and its facilities to District President Judy Abbott who invited all present to morning tea whilst she and her Committee escorted the New Presidents to the main table. Morning tea over, Chair of Match, Margaret Eggins read the cards and the players adjourned to the greens, where fortunately the weather stayed fine and a great morning’s play followed. After the bell, the players returned to the clubhouse, which looked beautiful. Each table was adorned with different coloured roses from Benning’s Rose Farm and each of the new President’s had special place cards and settings.

After a lovely Chinese luncheon District President Judy was introduced as the Toastmistress for the day and in turn introduced the new Presidents and their guests: Grafton’s President Dawn Lawson and her daughter Tracey, Yamba’s President Robyn McPherson and her brother David, Brooms Head President Lee Rae and her husband Bob. District President Judy then proposed a toast to the new Presidents with Grafton’s President Dawn responding by saying that she had a wonderful day and thanked Secretary Lorraine Demmery for all her hard work in making the place cards etc.

Patron Shirley Drum responded to the Visitors Toast regaling the ladies with a joke and challenging President Judy to follow suit.

Following the toasts and the cutting of the cake Secretary Lorraine presented each of the new Presidents with their cards and gifts. Each of the new President’s guests responded. Tracey Lawson said how proud she was to be there with her mother who came from a bowling family. Dawn’s mother having won many championship’s with the Woolgoolga Bowling Club.

President Robyn’s brother David responded by revealing some very amusing incidents in Robyn’s early years much to the delight of the ladies present and said how proud he too was of his sister.

President Lee’s husband Bob also said how proud he was of his wife and though only new to the district they had been made most welcome and he felt his wife would be a great President.

Raffle prizes and 100 club winners were duly drawn, winning and lucky teams presented.

District President Judy congratulated Wooli on holding the day at their club and for such a small club they had provided an excellent day. She also congratulated Secretary Lorraine for all her hard work in making this day a success and wished everyone a safe journey home.

District Treasurer Gwen Ryan congratulated President Judy on a great job as Toastmistress and thanked all who had attended saying that these days would not be such a success without all the clubs and their members.

LITHGOW WORKMEN’S VALLEY CHRISTMAS PARTY On a very overcast day, the Workies men and women bowlers dressed in their Christmas finery to celebrate and farewell a great year on the greens.

Everyone was happy to welcome Barbara Watters and Gail Coates who had been missing, due to medical reasons for some months.

The Workmen’s Club Tuscan room was transformed into a Christmas Winter Wonderland by Barbara Kapusta and her staunch social club members.

After lunch Santa arrived to give presents and to wish everyone season’s greetings.

Entertainment that was brought all the way from Las Vegas included “Chubby” Checker and his dancers, the Yellow Polka Dot Bikini ensemble and Ruth Harries singing and telling jokes in between costume changes.

OBERON RSL 50TH BIRTHDAY Oberon RSL celebrated their 50th birthday on February 18, 2015 and representatives from all Western District clubs attended.

A delightful morning tea was enjoyed before guests took to the green for a spider, then a game of triples bowls. After bowls all proceeded to the Club House for a very enjoyable lunch. Oberon President Pam Hanrahan, Western District President Ruth Harries and Oberon member Inge Braun, cut the birthday cake which was made and decorated by Secretary Dorothy Turner.

The guests included District President Ruth and her team and General Manager of Oberon RSL Club Ltd Mr Grade Wicker. All present received a special gift to mark the golden 50th year.

A big thank you to the small band of dedicated members, who made the day so happy and memorable for all.

FORSTER – 60TH BIRTHDAY

Forster ladies celebrated the Club’s 60th birthday on November 13 in style with a lovely lunch, bottles of wine and a beautiful cake.

In October 1954 fifteen ladies held their first meeting. At that time only wives of male members were allowed to join and they were not allowed to use the greens but had to bowl on the grass verge between the greens. A couple of years later, sisters of the male bowlers joined and the first game played by the women on a green was in April 1955. Forster was one of four clubs in the district at that time, now the district can boast fourteen clubs.

Rosehill PRESIDENT’S DAY 2014 Rosehill recently celebrated President’s Day for President Evelyn Redaelli and was honoured to welcome Macquarie District President Fay Langdon and District Secretary Fay Laney. Also a very warm welcome was given to CEO Ian Doherty, President John Sciberras and other members of the Board of Directors.

During morning tea, President Evelyn officially welcomed all her guests and visitors.

The function room looked and was a credit to the members of the Social Committee. Following morning tea a friendly game of bowls was the order of the day and it was wonderful to see Board members on the green enjoying themselves on President Evelyn’s Day. After lunch, District President Fay surprised two very delighted members, Eileen Richardson and Yvonne Gersbach by presenting them with Macquarie District Friendship Pins.

The District President, District Secretary and President Evelyn, cut the beautifully decorated cake which matched the theme of the room.

President Evelyn thanked everyone for attending and for all their efforts in making her day so special. A wonderful day was had by all.

Sylvania Shirley Power completed a pretty amazing feat by winning all Major Club Championships in 2014.

She was the Major Singles Champion and the skip for the Champion pairs, triples and fours.

Just to complete this top year, she was also the winner of the club mixed pairs.

Rowles Aspect South Coast School For Sufferers of Autism Principal February 2, saw Woonona hold their annual charity day, featuring a friendly bowls competition, raffles, Tombola, 200 Club, Lucky Dip’s, trade/ cake/ plant/ pickle tables – you name it, it was at there to buy and BUY THEY DID! There were 13 rinks of players – 26 teams of 4, local and visiting bowlers from North and South, who turn up every year, all eager to get out there and have a game of bowls. The different club colours on the green was an amazing sight.

Ladies played until the bell rang at 12.30 and returned to the clubhouse for their well earned drink and lunch, which was provided and served by the wonderful Truffles staff.

The Benefactors were: HEADWAY Illawarra who were represented by Robyn Russell , Coordinator and Tony, a wonderful young man with an acquired brain injury from a Jet Ski Accident.

Tony gave a speech that brought tears to many in the clubhouse as he was so sincere and determined to get his message across.

HEADWAY supports victims of head trauma, caused by accidents or sickness, who after months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation can slowly return to a life of some normality.

AUTISM SPECTRUM is the local Autism South Coast School at Corrimal. Their representative was Bruce Rowles, Principal. Bruce spoke

on the work of his dedicated teachers who enable some of these children to eventually attend a mainstream school.

Both organisations were presented with a cheque for $3,400, made possible by the voluntary work of the members of Woonona.

Both Ms Russell and Mr Rowles thanked everyone for their continued support and Mr Rowles added that donations from Woonona over the years now exceeded $20, 000.

How kind and generous all the lady bowlers, both home and visitors, are when it comes to donations. You are all to be congratulated.

In November of last year, Cardiff celebrated 60 years of the club . In 1952 the Men’s Bowling Club was formed.

They asked their ladies to form a Ladies Auxiliary to help with fund raising to build the clubhouse and greens. These 15 women worked tirelessly over the next two years running stalls, raffles and catered for the men’s working bees and functions.

In 1954, the Ladies Auxiliary was invited to form a Women’s Bowling Club. The official opening of the club was held on November 20, 1954. In these early years there was a waiting list for entry as a club member and nominations had to go to the Men’s Board first. Membership was open to the Ladies Auxiliary and the wives and daughters of Men’s Club members. In 1955 membership was opened to others. When joining the club you had to agree to play bowls at least once a month and also help with the catering and fund raising.

The cost of playing then was one shilling.

Afternoon tea was served at a cost of nine pence per person. Raffles were run on these days with prize donations from members, which could be a homemade cake or even a dozen eggs.

During early years, membership grew to around 150 and there were many bowling successes in pennants and district games.

At present there are 54 lady bowlers with enough nominations for 3 Pennant Teams this year.

Jenny Roberts PORT MACQUARIE

This months “Meet a bowler” is Jenny Roberts who plays at Lake Cathie which is 12km south of Port Macquarie. Jenny has four daughters and 13 grandchildren. Thank you Jenny for agreeing to be “Bowler of the month”.

How long have you been bowling?

What size and colour are your bowls?

I have been playing bowls for thirteen years.

My bowls are pretty old. They are burgundy in colour and are size 4 Greenmaster Premiers. I’ve had them for about seven years and I bought them second hand from a man at the club who said I should be playing with size 4 and as he was a very experienced and champion bowler I thought why not! I have since tried newer bowls and even bought a set, only to sell them the next day, but I keep coming back to my ‘diamond’ logoed Premiers.

Please tell us how you came to be interested in bowling and what keeps you going on playing?

I was riding my bike past the bowling club and saw the ladies playing bowls, it looked like fun. I had just moved up to Lake Cathie from the Oaks, near Picton and seeing as I was getting older (I had just turned 50) I thought I would have a go. Playing with and against other competitive people wanting to win spurs me on.

What is your bowling club?

I Play at Lake Cathie near Port Macquarie.

Can you tell us a bit about your club and district?

Lake Cathie is one of seven clubs in the Hastings Haven District, which is part of Region 2. When I joined it was one of the smaller clubs in the area but now it is one of the biggest. Our greens are grass as are the majority of clubs in the District. However, two of the clubs have synthetic greens.

Tell us something of your history with bowls, is this the only club to which you have belonged and a brief summary of the high points at this club or others to which you have belonged.

Yes Lake Cathie is the only club I have ever belonged to. I hadn’t been bowling long when I won my first major as a lead in the Major Triples. I was so excited. Since then I have won all the Major Club Championships, all of them more than once. I really enjoy playing singles and have been Club Champion seven times. The highest point of my bowling career so far has been winning the 2014 Australian Mixed Pairs in Melbourne with Greg Brims. I was also thrilled to have played in the Metro v Country in September last year and winning District and Regional pairs with Judith Blackler to make it to State at Tuncurry last year was wonderful.

Have you had any challenges in your bowling career?

Because I enjoy competition the biggest challenge has been learning to develop the mental strength, focus and concentration needed to win. It’s about learning to play one’s own game and not get sucked in to playing your opponent’s game.

What information would you give to a newer bowler to help them along?

I would tell them to enjoy themselves and not worry too much about being competitive at first. They’ll soon know whether or not they want to get more serious and compete – that just comes naturally. Also just let them know that they’ll get all sorts of well-meaning advice and not to take it all on board, just remember what their coach told them. The main thing is to relax and enjoy themselves.

What are some of the funny things that have happened since you started bowling?

What do you enjoy doing apart from bowls?

I’m not much of a TV or movie watcher, I’m a doer not a sitter, and don’t laugh – but to relax I do jigsaw puzzles! For the last six years I’ve been a volunteer at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. I love animals and one day I found a baby Koala on the ground outside my house. Unfortunately the little koala died but that made me think about doing something to help them. I love working there and have made some great friends. My other favourite activities are walking, fishing, hiking and cruising. I live near the lake and walk everyday with my little Chihuahua. I have a surf ski which I row around the lake and fish. With a friend I have had several trekking holidays: A week in Italy walking the Cinque Tere, a week in the Cotswolds in England, three day hiking in Turkey which included a fantastic trip in a Hot Air Balloon.

Closer to home I spent seven days climbing and walking around cradle mountain carrying a backpack weighing 18 kg, no mod cons on that trip. We had to carry all our food and water and pitch camp every night. None of the other trips were organised tours, my friend and I did it all ourselves using public transport. You could say that I have an adventurous soul. I love cruising as well and have been to Hawaii, the Islands, Papua New Guinea, around Australia twice and this year I’m cruising around the world in 104 days.

This is hard! One of the things that springs to mind is when I was quite new I wore a g-string under my shorts to social bowls, I soon found out that a G-String was not part of our uniform. Another time as part of a fours team at Manning Point, it was dark walking back to the chalet and one of the girls was lagging behind and when she walked in she had a black eye. Of course we wanted to know what had happened and she said that she was dancing with this guy his wife came up and hit her! You can imagine our reaction, but when she started to giggle we smelt a rat – she’d tripped in the dark and hit her face in the fall. We thought that the original version was better. Another time, first time I had played at another club in a triples match, there was a lady looking at every ones bowls, so I asked her if she had lost a bowl. I found out she was the umpire and was checking all of the players bowls.

What is it like to live where you live?

Can you give us an idea of where this is please, and if you could change your life what would you do and where would you live?

We used to come here regularly on holiday and got to know people so that when we did eventually retire and come to live here it was like coming home. It’s a very special place.

I remember a few years back after winning the major pairs with a dear friend who’d been bowling for over 20 years and never won a major, I went down to the lake for a walk and met a guy who was walking around Australia. He was a poet and I shared my win and a glass of wine with him. It was a very special end to a very special day and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

What makes you proud to be a bowler?

I’m proud to be able to give something back to the club that has given me so much.

I have been a coach for eight years and it makes me very proud to see the ladies that I have coached not only enjoying their bowls but also playing in Pennants for our club and having the confidence to compete in club championships. I’m currently Chairperson of Selection, but I think that my favourite job has been working on the Social Committee in the kitchen and dining area. I’ve found that to be a lot of fun and very satisfying.

Have you always been a good bowler?

Prior to bowls I played tennis for thirty years and played ‘A’ Grade tennis at White City, Sydney, so I think that before putting a bowl down I had good hand/eye coordination. I did find it fairly easy to pick up bowls, though I did have a lot of help and encouragement from a friend at the club. I still seek his help and advice before any big competition or tournament.

What is so special about playing bowls?

I think that it is the comradeship not only at the club, but at the other clubs when playing Pennant and District events. As Club Champion I have been fortunate to go down and play at Oak Flats numerous times and it’s just so special to meet the bowlers from other clubs. Attending the State Carnival and local carnivals it’s so good meeting the same people year after year. The comradeship that bowls gives you is probably only understood by other bowlers. It’s quite unique and very different from other sports.

Searching for a heart of gold in

Condong Condong Bowling Club, nestled in the beautiful Tweed Valley, certainly has a heart of gold.

Many moons ago Ron Pillon, Past Secretary of the club, after reading an article in a Bowls Magazine about disabled folk, applied for a NSW Government grant. His application was successful, and Ron set about organising with Club Coaches to work with a group of disabled bowlers. Four very special members of Condong, Wayne Chisholm, Mary Chisholm, Elayne Foster and Karen Cranwell, volunteered their time for a six week trial programme. Ten months later the programme is still going strong with a group of youngsters from Lifebridge Care thoroughly enjoying their activities at the Club. These young people, after a shaky start, are mastering the art of bowls and display great confidence in themselves.

Affectionately known as the “Ability Bowlers” around the club, they are now looking forward to meeting a challenge from other ‘ability’ groups in 2015 to prove their prowess on the greens.

At the recent 2014 Tweed Community Awards for Access and Inclusion presentations, the Club was delighted and honoured to receive a ‘Certificate of Achievement in Sports and Leisure’ in recognition of services rendered.

Congratulations to Condong and the dedicated coaches who give their time so unselfishly. Wayne, Mary, Elayne and Karen, your achievement with your group of Ability Bowlers has been wonderful. Condong Bowling Club you are simply the best!

SOUTH COAST UMPIRES MEETING The Umpires’ Discussion Group is held every second month and gives Umpires the opportunity to discuss the Laws of the Sport of Bowls and encourages those who wish to further their knowledge in this area to attend.

The South Coast Umpires Discussion Group held their December meeting and annual Christmas lunch at Mollymook Beach Bowling Club. They enjoyed a delicious morning tea prior to their holiday break.

Around the Greens State Coaches provide Support & Skill Building at Glenbrook In January 2015 Glenbrook Panthers Women’s Bowling Club hosted a coaching clinic for its lady bowlers to prepare them for this year’s pennants and competitions.

The Clinic was well attended and State Coaches Kathy Chatillon and Deby Brien provided insight into the roles each player plays, preparedness for bowls, game strategy and physical preparedness for a range of conditions, communications and psychological characteristics. This year some of the rules have changed and it was a good time to familiarise bowlers with those changes and answer questions.

Emphasis was placed upon team skills, good etiquette practice and time management.

Kathy outlined the criteria for a selection policy and the appeals committee, all useful for a large competitive club. The second part of the clinic focused on drills and placed players in challenging bowling positions.

Club coaches from Panthers also assisted on the day to help players; who are fortunate to have so many skilled coaches. After 2 hours, players had used many bowling skills to

meet the challenges and tested their skills in a variety of difficult bowling situations.

President Jackie Lewis thanked the visiting coaches and club coaches for volunteering to help on the day.

Judging from the many positive comments, the clinic was informative, useful and a great success. State bowling is fortunate to have such knowledgeable coaches who offer professional courses to club members. The State Coaches were friendly and took an individual interest in all who participated in the drills and made the whole event relevant to new and experienced bowlers, which is often difficult to do with a mixed audience.

They were flexible and managed to come back and finish the clinic on another day due to inclement weather.

On behalf of the Glenbrook lady bowlers we say, great work Kathy and Deby and many thanks for your help and support.

Glenbrook look forward to seeing you again in the future and recommend these clinics to other clubs.

2014 ABBT TROPHY PLAYED AT BATEAU BAY Bateau Bay Women’s Bowling Club hosted the annual challenge on Monday October 31, 2014.

The ABBT trophy is an interclub challenge between Avoca, Bateau Bay and Terrigal Women’s Bowling Clubs, which was first played in 2011. 96 players and 6 reserves played in the challenge on the day.

The format of the challenge is that each club selects 8 teams (32 players + 2 reserves). Players are to be graded according to current pennant season and no team is to exceed 10 points. Two games of 15 ends determine the winners based on points and margins.

The 2014 ABBT Trophy winners was Avoca Beach. The 2015 ABBT trophy will be hosted by Terrigal Bowling Club.

NEWPORT BEACH WOMEN’S BOWLING CLUB The Newport Beach Women’s Bowling Club held their annual Surfside Carnival on Friday, February 13 and 24 teams from 14 clubs within districts in Region 15 ‘rolled up’ to play.

The weather was fine and warm when play began in the morning and as the temperature rose in the early afternoon, the players were saved from the heat by the cooling sea breeze that came in. It was a most enjoyable day, with players catching up with old friends, making new friends, great games and plenty of laughter.

The team that won the carnival overall was from Mosman Bowling Club and the team members were presented with the Patron’s Trophy by Ann Wilson of Ann Wilson Funerals, the sponsor of the carnival. www.womensbowlsnsw.org

Around the Greens WARILLA At the 50th Birthday luncheon of Warilla WBC, President Carol Groch read the following poem written by her mother Valerie Ellis in 1992.

Valerie was President of Condobolin and wrote the poem for their 50th Birthday. Valerie was at Warilla’s celebration and is now 87 years old.

Up the workers HOWARD SHIELD

Illawarra vs. Newcastle held at Raymond Terrace On January 8 and 9, 2015 a team of players selected from all the clubs in Illawarra travelled to Raymond Terrace to play in the Howard Shield against the Newcastle District.

A team of 28 players participated in a game of fours playing 21 ends against a very strong Newcastle group. They played on an undercover synthetic green, a new experience to the Illawarra ladies.

Illawarra won three rinks Margo Brandes 27 to 12, Julea Morgan 20 to 14 and Sue Woods 23 to 15.

Skips Debbie Waldron, Julie Feltham, Pat Purdie and Leone Barnett kept their margins close so the score towards the end was very tight and the Selectors rechecked the score cards to confirm the final score, 144 to 141 – a three point margin to Illawarra.

Illawarra was ecstatic with the result and to be presented with the shield from the President from Newcastle Helen Abbott topped off a wonderful visit.

Over the 53 years this inter district competition has been held, Newcastle have won the shield 37 time to Illawarra 16. Well done ladies!

// District & Association News BEGA IMLAY DISTRICT - TURA BEACH TOPS TRIPLES COMP In January, the Bega Imlay District Women’s Bowling Association held its 2015 Triples Championship and for the first time, a Triples Plate competition. Having three out of four teams in the two finals, Tura Beach was assured of at least one win. They have come out on top with both titles.

In the Triples Championship, the Tura Beach team of Helen Elliott (lead), Kay Scrivener (second) and Carol Hayes (skip) won over Beryl Debney (lead), Edith Blacka (second) and Annabel Gammon (skip) from Tathra Beach.

The Final was a close game with both teams on 12 all after 16 ends.

in the Regional Play-offs.
