Blast from the past The long, hot, summer days are slowly coming to an end, and the fall season is approaching. We, as residents of Southern Indiana, recognize this as a sign that the Harvest Homecoming Festival is just around the corner.

Each year the Harvest Homecoming President is honored with choosing a theme for the festival. There have been many great themes over the past 47 years. This year’s theme is meant to take us back to our teen years. If you can remember cruising Spring Street through Frisch’s or White Castle, the Ranch House or Steak ‘n Shake in Clarksville, this year’s theme is for you.

I am proud to announce the theme for the 2015 Harvest Homecoming Festival, “HotRod Harvest.�

In choosing the theme for our festival this year my goal is to re-live a time in our past that was fun and care free.

No cell phones, Facebook, or Twitter.

Just our cars, friends, and a place to hang out.

So as you attend the Harvest Homecoming Festival this year, take a moment to think back and remember how things use to be.

Ohio River Greenway 5k Run/Walk 8:45 a.m. Mayor’s Address. 9 a.m. 5K Greenway Race. Location: New Albany Riverfront and Amphitheater The Friends of the Ohio River Greenway are partnering with the Floyd County Physical Activity Coalition to host the Greenway 5k & Floyd County Family Fitness Day. Registration is $25. The event will begin at the New Albany Amphitheater and take place on the Ohio River Greenway.

Culbertson Mansion Coffin Race & Zombie Fest Registration Time: 3 p.m. Driver’s Meeting: 3:30 p.m. Start Time: 4 p.m. Location: Culbertson Mansion, 914 East Main St. Kickoff the haunt season at the Culbertson Mansion Coffin Race & Zombie Fest. Join the ghosts and ghouls of the Culbertson Mansion State Historical Site and race your coffin down Main Street. The first team to get their “William” back to the mansion wins. After the race, be sure to visit the Zombie Fest on the grounds of the Culbertson Mansion. Local artisans and vendors will be on hand selling food and merchandise.

Sunday, Sept. 27 Pumpkin Decorating Contest Sunday, Sept. 26. Drop-off: 1-2:30 p.m. // Judging: 3 p.m. Location: 4-H Fairgrounds Rear Barn, Green Valley Road.

Group or individually prepared pumpkins may be

painted or decorated with any material. Craft entries may be ceramic, fiber, or maché. No previous year craft entries accepted. There will be two Grand Champion Awards (one from the ‘Individual’ category and one from the ‘Group’ category) for the entry most closely related to this year’s theme, “HotRod Harvest.” All entrants receive participation ribbons.

Event is free.

Pedaling Bicycle Tour Location: Forest Discovery Center in Starlight (near Huber’s Farm and Winery).. Time: Packet pickup and late registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and mass start begins at 9:30 a.m. Cycling helmets are mandatory for all participants and cyclists under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Routes, SAG stops, and lunch will remain open until 4 p.m. Entry Fee: The pre-registration fee is $25 per adult, and $15 for children 12 and under. The deadline for pre-registration is Sept. 18. Any entry postmarked after this deadline will be considered a late entry. Fees after this date are $35 for adults, and $17 for children 12 and under.

Harvest Homecoming Idol Open Auditions

2 p.m. New Albany Production House, 1736 East Main St., New Albany. Auditions are free. Top 12 finalists will pay a $15 entry fee. No age restriction. Anyone, any age can audition. Judges will select the top 12 candidates who will perform live at the festival on Friday, Oct. 9. From there, the judges will narrow the finalists down to the top 5. Those 5 finalists will battle it out on the stage on Saturday, Oct. 10, for the title of Harvest Homecoming Idol 2015. Rain location will be New Albany Production House. Monday, Sept. 28 Who Wants to Be a College Student?

College tuition can be awarded by answering a series of questions in a game based on the “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” game show. Biers on Parade 1 - 6 p.m. Local beer, fine food and melodies at the Farmers Market (City Square), at the corner of Market and Bank streets in downtown New Albany.

The New Albany Restaurant & Bar Association (NARBA) is partnering with New Albany’s Farmers Market to stage Biers on Parade, a family- friendly food and drink showcase at the newly remodeled Farmers Market pavilion at the corner of Market and Bank streets.

4th Annual “No-Tap” Bowling Tournament

Purdue Pumpkin Chunking Competition

Registration Time: 6 p.m. Start Time: 7 p.m. $20 entry fee per person (must be 16 years of age or older to participate). Shoe rental not included. There will be money pin shots included and various side pots available at an additional cost. Prize payouts are based upon total number of entries.

Time: 4 p.m. Location: Purdue College of Technology, Charlestown Road. Can you hit the Great Pumpkin from up to 125 yards away (Youth division: 75 yards) using a gravity powered trebuchet (trebyoo-shet) firing 5- to 16-pound pumpkins? There are 24 total teams (12 youth teams plus 12 adult teams) competing. Each team gets three attempts using supplied pumpkins. All machines must use gravity (falling weights) as their only source of power, pass the usual safety and functionality checks, and be ready for competition at 4 p.m. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. Youth teams will receive up to $400 worth of fabrication material FREE! Plus, FREE pumpkin painting for the kids!

The ride will begin at 11:30 a.m. and go through scenic Southern Indiana with stops in Corydon, where you will have lunch on your own, then on to various other locations, ending at Zesto on Charlestown Road.

I

t's one thing to fight for a cause from a distance, but quite another to actually be a victim of what you are speaking out against.

Laura Merida was a victim, on more than one occasion to cyberbullying. But instead of letting it get the best of her, and dictate how she would live her life, she decided to stand up and do something about it.

She decided to speak out to all who would listen about the bad that can come from the Internet and social media. She decided to use it as her platform at last month's Miss Harvest Homecoming Scholarship Pageant.

"I really want to try and make the world a better place. I want kids to know there are laws to protect them against cyberbullying. I was cyberbullied so it's personal. I would like to team up with schools and talk to students what cyberbullying means. I want to teach parents to be aware of their child's social media sites."

Merida, 21, will now have a larger audience to spread her message to after winning the 2015 Miss Harvest Homecoming pageant. The Ball State student, who is a singer, was crowned last month at Floyd Central High School.

"She is fantastic," said Remy Branstetter, chair person of the Miss Harvest Homecoming Pageant. "I am very excited to have her as Miss Harvest Homecoming. She will be a wonderful queen. She is a wonderful advocate for her platform because she has survived cyberbullying. She is living her platform."

Merida is a relatively newcomer to the area.

Her family moved to Georgetown three years ago.

She is a graduate of Brownstown High School.

But, she said, she sees Floyd County as her "home."

MISS HARVEST CONTINUED "I am so looking forward to meeting people during the festival and excited to be part of this community," she said.

But she is no newcomer to scholarship pageants. She has won Miss Vincennes University and Miss Heart of Indiana and will now go back to the Miss Indiana Pageant next year after winning Miss Harvest Homecoming.

"I knew of the [Harvest Homecoming] pageant and it finally worked out this year where I was able to compete," she said. "I was just ecstatic to be part of it, let alone win. I thought so highly about the girls I was competing with that when I heard my name called I was just overwhelmed with excitement."

Merida said competing in Miss America sanctioned pageants and earning scholarship money has helped pay for her college. She also said compet-

ing in pageants allowed her to pursue her love which is singing.

Merida has performed at Six Flags Great America in Chicago.

"One reason I started pageants was so I could keep performing," she said.

Last year's Miss Harvest Homecoming Morgan Jackson, won the Miss Indiana crown and will compete in the Miss America Pageant Saturday in Atlantic City.

Branstetter said Miss Harvest Homecoming makes about 25 appearances during the festival, but also becomes a part of something special.

"She becomes part of the festival family. We are a tight-knit family," she said.

And Merida is counting down the days until the Oct. 3 parade, the first official festival event.

"I can't wait for the first week of October," she said.

Where can I get a Harvest Homecoming Pin?

Pins to be on sale Sept. 1 and will be available at financial institutions, Kroger, participating merchants, the Harvest Homecoming Office and various Harvest Homecoming events.

They may also be purchased during the festival at the Information and Souvenir Booths.

How do I register for the prizes?

Why should I buy a Harvest Homecoming Pin? Harvest Homecoming Pins cost only $5, which is a great deal.

You get a valuable coupon in every envelope redeemable at local establishments, and an entry form to be eligible to register for one of many great prizes to be given away on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Simply fill out the coupon in the pin envelope and drop it off at the Harvest Homecoming Office or at the Information or Souvenir Booths during Booth Days. Coupons must be turned in by 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12 to be eligible for the Pin Prize drawing.

When is the Harvest Homecoming Office open and where is it located?

The office, located at 431 Pearl Street (on the corner of Pearl and Elm streets), will be open from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning the day after Labor

Day. For information you can call the office at (812) 944-8572, or stop by and pick up an application for one of the various events being held during the festival.

How do I apply for a booth at the Harvest Homecoming?

To request booth space for the 2016 festival go to the “Applications” page on this site to download applications. Submit your application between January and May of 2016.

If new application does not appear, use the previous years.

How can I ensure my safety during the festival?

Designate a meeting place should you become separated from your party. (The festival does not make announcements for lost or separated parties.) Do not bring pets, skateboards or bicycles into the downtown Booth area, Ride or Riverfront areas. Service animals are allowed. Be extra cautious when crossing the railroad tracks leading to the riverfront.

What is the difference between a “Sponsored By” event and a “Hosted By” event?

A “Sponsored By” event is organized and run by Harvest Homecoming. Proceeds (if any) go back to Harvest Homecoming to help fund future festivals. A “Hosted By” event is organized and run by the organization listed by the event information. Proceeds (if any) go to that organization. A fee is charged for the event to be listed in the Harvest Homecoming brochure and on the website.
