LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

W

inter turns to spring, spring turns to summer and then summer turns to the Harvest Homecoming Festival!

BRADLEY H. NEEDHAM 2016-17 Harvest Homecoming President

I have been fortunate to enjoy all the festivals from the beginning. I have painted windows, marched in the parade as a Boy Scout, played in the NAHS marching band and I even saw Davy Jones of the Monkees (Twice). Now I have the greatest honor of being Harvest Homecoming President for this year. This year’s festival sports many new things... multiple new local shops and restaurants, a new Harvest Homecoming President (That’s Me!), and of course all the events, music and food booths that will fit in the festival area, an endorsement from the Indiana State Bicentennial committee. What we create is a city within the city and many

thanks to our mayor, city council, police, firefighters and merchants for allowing this festival to happen. This year I am pleased and allowed to choose the festival theme and logo/pin design. Also many thanks to Jeff Finn Designs for making the pin come to life. The theme is “Classical Harvest,” based roughly on looking back to our Indiana roots, but not discounting what we can and will do in our future. The main focus of our roots are farming and country living…..planting, growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables, tractor pulls, car shows and concerts. The pin design is based on sketches that depict farm living, our festival origin, “The Pumpkin Festival” and the Indiana State Bicentennial Endorsement all of which combine to make this our festival.

HARVEST HOMECOMING

PAGEANT representing the festival Ballew, Ryann win 2016 titles By CHRIS MORRIS chris.morris@newsandtribune.com

N

EW ALBANY — This was not the first time Ollie Ballew participated in the Miss Harvest Homecoming Scholarship Queen Pageant. But it seemed like it to the 23-year-old Christian Academy graduate. Ballew competed four years ago, had only three weeks to prepare and still finished first runner-up. She then took time off from beauty pageants to complete her nursing degree at Bellarmine University. So she decided to give the Harvest Homecoming pageant another try, and last month, captured the crown that eluded her four years ago. “This year, I was out of school, and had more than three weeks to get ready so I felt better and had more confidence,” she said. “Four years ago was the first time I had ever sang in front of a large crowd so I was nervous. So that experience helped.” Ballew also said her experience as a cardiac ICU nurse at Jewish Hospital and her volunteer work with Grace on Wings Charity Air Ambulance, which provides medical transportation for patients at no charge, has prepared her for whatever is thrown her way. “You meet a lot of people in ICU, and many are not very well,” she said. “I think dealing with individuals who sometimes have to say goodbye to loved ones, I have to be strong for them. I think being 23 and being able to relate to people and talk to people may have given me an edge.” Each contestant is judged on talent, swimsuit, evening gown, on-the-spot question and interview. Ballew is a vocalist and sang, “I Was Here,” at the pageant. She said she lost 10 pounds getting ready for the competition, but is pretty sure she will put those pounds back on during booth days. “I am looking forward to what they call feed the queen. The queen gets to go around to booths and eat free.” But on a more serious note, she hopes she can inspire other young women to reach outside of their comfort zone to try something new. “I hope to inspire more girls to compete for Miss Harvest Homecoming. I only had three competitors, and they were all wonderful young ladies, but I would like to see a lot more girls give this opportunity a try, because win or lose, you walk away a better person. This pageant is top-notch.” The pageant is an official Miss America preliminary pageant. By winning the title, Ballew will compete in the Miss Indiana | SEE QUEENS ON PAGE 11

pageant next summer. She said she is looking forward to representing the festival. “I want to be the best Ollie I can be,” she said. “I am really excited about the festival.”

OUTSTANDING TEEN While Ollie Ballew returned to competition for the first time in four years, Meadow Ryann, 17, has been competing in pageants across the state. This was her fourth year to compete at the state level, and third year in the Miss Harvest Homecoming Outstanding Teen competition. For the past two years, she placed second runner-up at the Harvest Homecoming Pageant, before winning the title this year. She has not only competed at the state level, but enjoyed plenty of success. She finished third runner-up in the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen competition. She was recently crowned Miss Northwest Territory’s Outstanding Teen to go along with her Harvest Homecoming crown. Two years ago she won the Quality of Life Scholarship at the state competition and received the Hoosier Leadership Memorial Scholarship. She was also the preliminary talent and fitness award winner at the state pageant. Ryann, who is home-schooled, expects to grad-

uate next spring as a junior. She is already taking classes at Ivy Tech. A vocalist who also plays guitar, she is no stranger to the stage. But, she said, despite her many accomplishments, she is “thrilled” to be Harvest Homecoming’s Outstanding Teen. “I am very excited about it,” she said. She said the Harvest pageant is also one of the best in the state. “So many things set us apart. We have so many resources,” she said. “It prepares me to reach my ultimate goal, to be Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen. I have competed in a lot of local pageants but the directors’ involvement here is the best I have ever seen. Cara [Brown, pageant coordinator] is amazing. Cara is so involved and she requires so much from her title holders.” During their reign, both Ballew and Ryann will have to volunteer at two charity events each month. She also hopes she can inspire and motivate others. “One of the things I look forward to is Kids’ Day in the Tent,” she said. “With or without the crown, I want to portray myself as wholesome because I am. There are so many negative influences out there. Just be yourself. That’s not just for young girls, but everyone in between.”

Do not bring pets, skateboards or bicycles into the downtown Booth area, Ride or Riverfront areas. Service animals are allowed. Be extra cautious when crossing the railroad

What is the difference between a “Sponsored By” event and a “Hosted By” event? A “Sponsored By” event is organized and run by Harvest Homecoming.
