The growing problem of

peanut

allergies Parents tend to be quite familiar with food allergies. In an effort to protect youngsters, schools have begun to crack down more regularly on foods that tend to cause allergic reactions, often placing restrictions on what children can bring in for lunches or snacks.

Parents and children who grew up around peanut and tree nut allergies are quite familiar with what triggers allergic reactions associated with such foods, and the potential side effects of consuming these foods. But those who are less experienced with food allergies may not know what to expect.

According to the Mayo Clinic, being allergic to nuts us one of the more common food allergies, especially among children. Many people who are allergic to peanuts are also allergic to other tree nuts, including walnuts, almonds and pecans.

As with any allergen, reactions vary from person to person. Some may experience mild symptoms, such as light rashes or swelling, while others may have severe reactions, including anaphylactic shock, which is characterized by shortness of breath, a severe drop in blood pressure, constriction of airways, and potential heart failure. According to Spire Health Partners, more than 3 million people in the United States have a nut allergy, and one-third of them will suffer from a severe symptom if they ingest nuts.

your body mistakenly identifies peanut proteins as something that can be harmful. Just as your body might fight a cold, it releases chemicals from the immune system to fight off the peanut invader. The number of kids with peanut allergies has been increasing over the last 10-15 years, doubling in the last halfdecade alone. It isn't known why some people are prone to nut allergies while others are not. However, Michael C. Young, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a practicing pediatrician at Children's Hospital, has a few ideas. Nursing mothers and very young children are eating more peanuts, particularly in the form of peanut butter, than ever before, something that Young feels could be causing a higher incidence rate of peanut allergies. Young also theorizes that better hygiene may play a role, suggesting that because children have fewer infections (due to improved hygiene and routine immunizations), their immune systems are more likely to target other things, such as

foods and environmental factors, resulting in allergies.

Although peanut allergies are prevalent and can be dangerous, there is no reason to act rashly. Young notes that approximately 20 percent of children will outgrow their peanut allergies by the age of 6, and he advises that it is worth having a child retested as they get older to gauge if there have been any changes in the status of the peanut allergy.

While being diligent in reading food labels and asking what ingredients are in prepared foods at restaurants is key for people with peanut allergies, so is avoiding potential skin contact. This means thoroughly washing areas where peanuts or peanut butter may have been and ensuring other children wash up after lunch.

Peanut allergies are foremost on the minds of parents and educators.

Understanding what is involved in a peanut allergy can help everyone make informed decisions about protecting youngsters. (MS)

Peanut allergy facts • Direct contact is the most common cause of a reaction. This results from eating peanuts or foods that contain peanuts. Crosscontamination,which occurs when peanuts unintentionally come into contact with other foods, is another common cause.

• Some people can have a reaction by touching peanuts with their skin.

A rash may occur, but a very dangerous reaction will not result unless the peanuts enter the mouth or come into contact with the nose or eyes.

• An allergic reaction can occur from inhalation of peanut dust, such as peanut flour or ground shells during processing. Aerosol cooking sprays that contain peanut oil also can produce a reaction. It is important to note that the smell of peanuts will not induce an allergic reaction.

• Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York found that peanut proteins can be detected in some people's saliva after eating peanuts. A kiss could transfer some of the peanut allergens to another person.

• Sometimes an allergy is not really an allergy, but rather an intolerance to a certain food. A food intolerance does not involve the immune system.

A person with a food intolerance can eat small amounts of the food with only mild symptoms, such as indigestion, rather than a severe reaction with a true allergy.

Blood Donation Basics The flow of healthy, oxygenated blood through the body is essential for life. It is also required in large supply when people undergo surgeries and other therapies.

With the demand for blood so high, reserves are in short supply. Adding to the shortage is lower turnout among donors, and the public has been urged to donate blood to increase units available.

Blood shortages abound

The Red Cross and America's Blood Centers, which collectively represent all of the blood banks in the United States, continued to report shortages throughout 2012. According to Red Cross President Dr. Bernadine Healy, there is a critical shortage of blood, and the shortage in 2012 was one of the worst her organization had seen. As such, the shortage has forced the cancellation of many elective surgeries across the United States. ABC notes there also are severe shortages throughout the Northeast.

Increased demand, meaning chemotherapy treatments, organ transplants, heart surgeries and elective options, have left blood banks depleted. Plus, the demand for blood exceeds the rate of blood donations. The Red Cross has stated it typically needs 80,000 units of blood available daily, but now has roughly 35,000 units.

How do I donate blood?

Many people want to donate blood but are either off-put by the idea of needles and drawing of blood or are unaware of the process. Becoming informed can shed light on what is done and make the entire process much less intimidating.

Blood drives occur at various locations. You also may be able to donate blood directly at a Red Cross center or hospital. Simply log on to www. redcrossblood.org and enter your zip code or address to find out where and when a blood drive will be held.

Just about anyone age 17 to 75 can donate blood.

Provided they are at least 110 pounds and do not

have any acute symptoms of the flu, colds or infections or have had close contact with someone with hepatitis in the last year. Those who have hepatitis, a heart condition that is more serious than a murmur or HIV/AIDS or have engaged in any activities that may have put them at risk for HIV/AIDS, will not be able to donate.

At the donation you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and be given a screening interview to qualify as a donor. You also will need to provide documentation that proves your age, so bring along identification. If you pass the screening, your vital signs will be checked and you will be prepared for the blood draw.

As with a routine blood test, the injection site will be sterilized and then a needle will be inserted to draw the blood. The volume of blood collected for a donation will be larger than for a blood test. One pint, or 450 milliliters of blood, will be taken. This is only between 8 to 10 percent of all the blood in your body.

What are other things I should know?

You can prepare for donating blood by adhering to a healthy, low-fat diet and getting a good night's sleep the day before. Avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco prior to the donation. Make sure you do not skip any meals.

Bring along a list of the medications you take to share with the volunteers at the blood drive. Certain medications will exclude you from donating.

It is possible for a healthy person to give whole

blood every 56 days. Donations of platelets or other components of blood may be able to occur more frequently. Individuals who have the universal blood type (Type O-) may want to sign up as frequent donors because their blood can be used for anyone.

Donating a pint of blood can help several different people. With extreme shortages in the blood supply in effect, now could be the ideal time to make a blood donation. (MS)

Blood needs More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day.

A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.

The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.

A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

Dr. Vasu Kakarlapudi, an otolaryngologist in New Albany, uses an innovative new technology called balloon sinus dilation, a minimally invasive office procedure that can permanently relieve the miserable symptoms of sinusitis in a matter of minutes.

“The principle is the same as angioplasty for the heart,” said Dr. Kakarlapudi. “We’re using a small catheter and an inflatable balloon to widen the sinus opening in the same way a cardiologist will use a balloon to open a blocked artery.”

The procedure is done using a local anesthetic in the doctor’s office. The physician gently places the device in the patient’s blocked sinus drainage pathway, guided by a tiny camera that sends a live picture to a monitor, and inflates the balloon to expand the drainage pathway and relieve the blockage.

“It’s very minimally invasive — there are no incisions, no scraping with tools, no cutting or removal of tissues as we did in the past, and no general anesthesia is necessary,” Kakarlapudi said. “We’re very gently addressing and expanding the problem areas while preserving the tissues, so there’s minimal trauma, and the patient walks out of the office and goes back to work the next day.”

One such patient is Duane Pierce, 46, a retired Army chief warrant officer now working at Fort Knox as a civilian. After 15 years of suffering with sinus infections five or six times a year, Pierce

"Exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression..."

Regular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power.

According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of "Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter," exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That's because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well.

As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits one might reap from regular exercise.

Improved mood

Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don't just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise,

antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill.

Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active.

Blumenthal's study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.

Antidote to anxiety

Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body's nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body's heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur.

Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Prevent the Flu From Flooring You This Season

hen the colder weather begins to rear its ugly head, so, typically, do the common ailments associated with the dropping temperatures. For many, the notion of winter as the holiday season has been replaced and instead become the cold and flu season.

And that’s not just perception, it’s reality. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized from flu complications each year. Of those, 10 percent are children younger than 5.

 Avoid those who currently have the flu. The flu is easily spread from one person to another, and the viral germs cane be air borne. Whenever you’re exposed to a person with the flu, be sure to wash your hands frequently and do your best to minimize your exposure to them.  Parents, teach your kids. For parents, the chances of catching the flu are often heightened because it’s hard to know who your children are coming into contact with at school every day. Because schools have so many children, it’s almost impossible for children to avoid being exposed to the flu virus at one point or another. To decrease the likelihood of getting the flu through your children or their classmates, teach the kids the same flu prevention tips as well. Tell them to be sure to wash their hands regularly, and avoid share food or beverages with their friends as well.  Eat healthy and get your sleep.

A poor diet and a lack of sleep, whether together or simply on their own, can weaken the immune system. A weaker immune system makes us more susceptible to the flu, as well as other ailments. Be sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet, and make sure you make time to get the proper amount of rest.

“The procedure was no more uncomfortable than having a tooth filled,” said Pierce. “And I felt the results immediately — instead of feeling like I was breathing through a straw, I could take a full deep breath right away. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).
