finding Fest of Ale moving to New Albany Riverfront By CHRIS MORRIS chris.morris@newsandtribune.com
N
EW ALBANY — It started out with around 100 people in the parking lot of Keg Liquors in Clarksville 10 years ago. Now, not only does it draw more than 10 times that amount, but it has also gained a reputation as one of the best beer festivals around. “It started out as a celebration of craft beer, and it has just kind of blown up from there,” said Todd Antz, owner of Key Liquors, who has organized the event from day one. This year, Fest of Ale will continue its tradition at a new location. After spending the last seven years at St. Anthony’s in Clarksville, Fest of Ale is moving to the New Albany Riverfront this year. The event is planned for Saturday, June 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. “We were starting to get some complaints from the neighborhood, and this gives us an opportunity to grow,” Antz said. “St. Anthony’s has been great to us, we just felt like we had outgrown the space. We felt like the event was becoming a bit too taxing for their neighbors and parishioners, and that it was best for both parties if we moved on.” And the city of New Albany is happy Antz chose to move the annual festival, which celebrates and promotes craft beers and local wineries, to its riverfront. “It’s huge for New Albany,” said Courtney Lewis, director of outreach and engagement for the city. “We are excited to have the Fest of Ale. They have been great to work with. They are like a well-oiled machine. They are excited and we are excited to have them.” Antz said the city was quickly on board with his idea to move the event to the riverfront. “The city was very receptive. I approached the city and they had an answer of yes to me immediately,” he said. “We had some logistical headaches to get over like you do with any location, but they have been great to work with.” Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 the day of the festival and can be purchased at Keg Liquors, 617 E. Lewis & Clark Pkwy., in Clarksville or at 4304 Charlestown Road in New Albany, or online at www. kegliquors.com. Ticket sales are limited to 1,500, and there are still a few available. All proceeds are donated each year to the Crusade for Children. Last year Antz
donated $14,000 to the Crusade. “We have never made profit off this event,” he said. “Dad was a firefighter in Jeff and we always looked to help the Crusade. After we pay our bills the rest is donated to the Crusade.” There will be 100 different beers and 30 to 40 wines available for attendees to sample in a glass. The idea Antz said was to promote independent breweries throughout the area. He was one of the first to introduce different craft beers at his Clarksville store. “I would say the folks at New Albanian [Brewing Company] preceded me, but retail wise I would say I was one of the first,” he said. “When I first bought the business from my parents I noticed how difficult it was to buy good beer. Eleven years later you can find it anywhere.” Besides a large selection of beers and wines, there will also be five food vendors at Fest of Ale, they include Taco Steve, Gospel Bird, Feast BBQ, Shawn’s Southern BBQ and Eh Cumpari Pizza. “We have a great variety of food,” Antz said. There will also be music played throughout the day from local artists. But Antz said the music will not overpower the event. He said while he is glad there is now room to grow the festival, he doesn’t want it to get too big. “We purposely keep the number at 1,500. We want a smaller atmosphere,” Antz said. “We have a pretty dedicated crowd that comes each year. We have very few lines and it gives people time to talk to representatives of the different breweries. Some festivals I’ve been to look like a buffet line.” This year, there will be beers representing 25 different states and 15 to 20 countries. Antz said beer festivals are everywhere now that craft beers have become more popular. “They have grown tremendously. It used to be during the summer there would be one or two a month. Now you can find a beer festival every week. We have so many quality breweries attend ours.” Sponsors for this year’s event includes Family Allergy & Asthma, The Exchange Pub-Kitchen, Falls City Beer, Sun King Brewery and North Coast Brewing Company. NEW ALBANY — The city of New Albany is preparing for an explosion of sorts on Sunday, May 29. A Boomtown Ball & Festival type of blast. This will mark the fourth consecutive year for the festival in downtown New Albany. The city has again enlisted the support of Flea Off Market to assist with the booth component of the festival. Flea Off Market is a unique outdoor bazaar that will feature both regional and local vendors offering records, books, antiques, vintage items, fine arts and crafts, and more. New to this year’s event is Classical 90.5’s Instrument Drive to collect instruments for New Albany-Floyd County Public Schools. It will have a drop-off booth and activity booth open at the event from 4 to 8 p.m. Gates for this free, family-friendly event open at 1 p.m. The lineup for the outdoor stage begins at 1:30 p.m. While Harvest Homecoming still heads the list of city events held in the downtown streets each year, Boomtown is a little “unique.” “There are different kinds of booths and a different vibe that separates Boomtown from Harvest Homecoming,” said Courtney Lewis, director of outreach and engagement for the city. “It has really grown. It has a regional pull.” Music will be played throughout the festival on a stage located on Bank Street. “There is truly something for everyone,” Lewis said, of the variety of music. There will also be food and drink vendors at the festival. — Assistant editor Chris Morris
