rails’ goal to be

DESTINATION RESTAURANT Clarksville location opened last month By CHRIS MORRIS chris.morris@newsandtribune.com LARKSVILLE — David Lawrence didn’t want to open just another chain restaurant. He wanted something special, a place where people felt at home. He hopes Rails Craft Brew & Eatery is just that place. “We want to be a destination restaurant,” Lawrence said. “What sets Rails apart … I think it’s our wide selection of craft beer, good food at a fair price, our friendly staff and family atmosphere.” Lawrence recently opened his second location at 318 W. Lewis and Clark Parkway, in Clarksville. The building used to be the former home to Sam’s at the Montrose until late last month. Lawrence and his crew quickly signed a lease on the building and went to work They ripped out the old bar, put in new windows to “brighten the place up” and completed other improvements. In just four weeks, Rails opened for business. “We had to flip it quickly … we had four weeks. We put in a lot of long days,” Lawrence said. “The bar is all new. We tried to open it up with a little more light. A new beer cooler large enough for at least 20 kegs had to be installed. “This is an extraordinary building

and we think it’s a good location. We know we are on the other end of restaurant row, but we feel like if you take care of your customers they will take care of you.” The second phase of the renovation includes redoing the outdoor patio complete with a bar. Once Lawrence receives a variance Aug. 24, he will

begin having music outside on the weekend. He said it will be more like dinner music, nothing too loud. Rails has a wide selection of steaks, seafood, chicken, burgers and a variety of appetizers to please almost anyone. The selection of craft beer is even more impressive — 20 on draft and 30 bottles to choose from. Many of the beers change with the season. “We have a lot of Indiana beers and some national crafts,” Lawrence said. “We always keep changing the draft selections. A lot of it is based on what is available.”

RAILS: Owner 'pleasantly surprised' with response CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 He said he is also open for requests if someone has a suggestion. Rails has been open for about a month and Lawrence said he has been pleased with the response. In fact, he said he has been “pleasantly surprised.” While Sam’s at the Montrose was only open five days a week, he said he wants people to know his restaurant is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. through the week, and 11 a.m. to midnight on both Friday and Saturday. “Through the week we have been busy enough, we haven’t been rushed which is good because we are still training people. But on the weekend we have been very busy,” he said. Lawrence, who lives in Louisville, first opened a Rails in downtown Seymour after a real estate agent told him about the need for a good place to eat in the downtown area. The same agent notified him about the Clarksville location. He said they are both in old, historic buildings which is what he likes. The Seymour restaurant’s building was constructed in 1852. “The response up there [Seymour] has been great. People didn’t want just another chain,” he said. “There are a lot of chains along the highway so we wanted to create a niche.” Lawrence said he employs 95 people — 50 at the Clarksville location. He said all but two of Sam’s former employees were retained. Rails also has room for meetings, gatherings and parties, and soon there will be even more

While Rails is new, Lawrence has been in the restaurant business since he was 14 years old. He said in the 1980s he was involved with the seven Bonanza restaurants in the Louisville area. When they were all purchased by Ponderosa, his group got into Papa John’s Pizza.

Waitress Kim Hilligoss helps customers at Rails Craft Brew & Eatery in Clarksville. The new restaurant features a room for meetings and parties, and is looking to renovate more space upstairs.

He said he will be a familiar face at the Clarksville location of Rails. “I like to talk to people and get to know them,” he said. “I think it’s good that they get to talk to the owner. We are really happy to be here in Clarksville and look forward to serving the community.”
