Rock around the Xmas ToyFest eases holiday burden on families through shows

EFFERSONVILLE — This Saturday, more than 15 bands will take to the stage to help raise money for toys for children at the fourth annual ToyFest.

Doors open at the FFC on Middle Road in Jeffersonville at 4 p.m. and folks can check out the wide range of music — everything from acoustic to pop-punk to post-hardcore, and lots in between — for $7 or an unopened toy of equal value. Bands are also selling advance tickets for $5.

The event, with proceeds going to Toys for Tots, was started by Richie Ray, owner at Rockstop Studios in Clarksville, former co-owner at New Albany Production House, in 2012.

Ray started learning the value of giving back early, going with his father to auctions in West Virginia at just 7 years old, buying toys to give to local missions.

Now, he has the opportunity to carry on the tradition in his

own style.

“I had been wanting to do something like this for years,” Ray said. “And I know a lot of bands that will donate time and put in the effort to make it happen.”

Helping children also hits close to home for Ray: Growing up in rural West Virginia, he saw his own family and others around him struggling to make ends meet. Sometimes that meant few or no presents under the tree.

“A lot of people around me struggled really badly with having money for Christmas or in general just paying their bills,” he said, adding that children might not understand.

“It’s not because they don’t love you, it’s because they cant afford to do it.”

He hopes ToyFest event can shoulder some of the Christmas burden and brighten children’s holidays.

The event is also multi-sided. While Ray said he wants to break last year’s record for donations, he also wants some of these local bands to gain more exposure, and help cultivate

growth in the current local music scene.

“I hope everybody has a great time, I hope everybody finds their new favorite band,” he said. “There are no national bends without local bands. Everybody’s got to start somewhere.”

Ray opened Rockstop in April, soon after the former New Albany Production House shuttered in spring. He’s doing a lot of the same stuff he was able to do at the previous spot — music and video production, graphic design, T-shirt and merchandising — but he’s still searching for a permanent spot to have the live music that the New Albany Production House could have.

Until he finds it, he’s been booking shows at various places across Southern Indiana and Louisville — Spinelli’s Pizza downtown, and the FFC in Jeffersonville, for example.

There’s not space at the new studio to house the shows, and Ray said the venue at the previous studio worked so well because the business itself was self-sustaining.

“It’s difficult to run a venue by itself if you don’t serve alcohol,” Ray said, adding that alcohol sales are not really on his radar

Forecastle festival lineup announced LOUISVILLE — Embarking on its 15th year, Forecastle will return in 2017 led by celebrated dance rock legends LCD Soundsystem, alt-rock royalty Weezer, and the infectious grooves of electro-pop duo Odesza, the festival announced in a news release. The three-day music celebration will take place July 14–16, at Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville.

Additional acts include Cage the Elephant, PJ Harvey, Run the Jewels, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, GRiZ, X Ambassadors, Vince Staples, NEEDTOBREATHE, Teddy Abrams & Friends, Conor Oberst and many more. A full list of confirmed artists from the initial lineup can be found here.

Beatlemania gets local boost LOUISVILLE — StarVista LIVE, a leader in live entertainment, announces it has acquired a financial and operational stake in Abbey Road on the River, a five day music festival that draws over 20,000 fans annually and is dedicated to the music and influence of The Beatles. For the first time, the event will be held in May at Big Four Station park in Jeffersonville.

The new partnership will heighten the current festival’s artistic and experiential components and develop companion events in new markets throughout the country, as well as build new programs. StarVista LIVE, associated with the Time Life brand, creates unique entertainment experiences that bring fans together to relive their favorite moments and create new memories.

Southern Indiana-based musician Jacob Resch is one of the artists playing Saturday. He’s looking forward both to helping the kids and playing music.

“It’s a good cause and there are a ton of good bands,” he said. “It’s always fun to get out there and play ... just a really good time, a lot of good music and a lot of good people.

“People should expect a good selection of music.

There are a lot of musicians I’ve known for quite a long time [who will be playing] and they’re all a little different but it will flow uniquely.”

Resch has been close to Ray since he met him nearly four years ago, when he was learning more about how to get some of his stuff recorded. He’s been playing music since he was 8 years old and started writing his own music and recording when he was 17.

Now, the 21-year-old has more than 15 recorded songs under his belt, several videos and said he has grown creatively over the past few years. He said he owes this, in part, to the local scene.

“I think there’s a lot of talent in this area and a lot of people doing unique things,” he said, adding that support from the community is what makes it possible.

“There’s a lot of talent but it’s a matter of getting the local community to come out and support it.”

Ray said he’s ready to keep doing what he has been — with his own studio and in the music community — to grow professionally and help grow the scene itself.

“The music scene is like its own close community,” he said. “It’s important to have a tight music scene because then everybody will actively work to help everybody else.”

As for the toy drive, he’s not stopping that anytime soon, either.

“Honestly, I plan to do it until I’m not able to do it anymore,” he said.
