NO ORDINARY BUNT CAKE Young entrepreneur finds herself on a sweet path

It was the sweetest butt you’ve ever seen. Wellrounded. Shiny. Delicious. The cake, of course. The butt cake. It was one of Morgan Coomer’s earliest creation as a ... wait for it ... budding baker. Every artist has a story. Coomer’s is one of pasJason Thomas, Editor sion and respect for lessons handed down from her great grandmother “Kaka,” as you’ll read about inside. Kaka knew her stuff. The self-taught baker and entrepreneur — YouTube videos served as Coomer’s classroom — churns out the desserts through her business, Sweets by Morgan, which she runs out of Ann’s By The River restaurant in Jeffersonville. The 25-year-old’s business is on the rise, which has inspired her to think big with opening her own store within the year. That’s awesome. That’s SoIn.

Coomer is not alone on Southern Indiana’s women entrepreneur landscape. Laura Buckingham opened Bread and Breakfast in New Albany late last year. Can you say bacon cinnamon rolls? Rachel Smallwood’s Orange Clover has become a Jeffersonville staple. Bet there are plenty more. Will you help us find them? Coomer is paying her dues. She was busy busing tables at Ann’s on Tuesday, in addition to crafting her desserts. She even took the time to retrieve a customer’s hat that was left behind in a booth. On the cap was a message: “CAUTION! Bald Head Area.” That made Coomer laugh. She has a sweet laugh. That’s what we’re all about in SoIn. We work hard. We pay our dues. We take time to laugh. And sometimes, we make cakes shaped like butts. — Jason Thomas is the editor of SoIn. He can be reached by phone at 812-206-2127 or email at jason. thomas@newsandtribune.com. EFFERSONVILLE — Baking 300 cupcakes, three wedding cakes or 2,300 cookies in one day may seem like an impossible feat to some, but for Morgan Coomer, it’s her life passion. “I don’t want to be like every other baker,” she said. “I want to do something a little different.” Owner of Sweets by Morgan, the 25-year-old can be found baking every day out of her family’s restaurant at Ann’s By The River in Jeffersonville. For the last four years, Coomer has been making everything from cakes to cinnamon rolls for her business, as well as creating made-to-order cakes for weddings, birthdays and more. In addition, Coomer also sells baked goods at the Swirlz yogurt and coffee shop in Jeffersonville. “Some days I work 14, 15, sometimes 16 hours a day, and I just keep going,” she said. “I need a clone.” Coomer said she decided to create Sweets by Morgan after more customers started purchasing cake orders. Since then, Coomer’s bakery business has grown in popularity, from baking 10 birthday cakes a week to sometimes several wedding cakes in a weekend. She’s also eyeing opening her own store in the near future. “It’s fun,” she said. “I love it.” other bakers. “I make everything from scratch,” she said. “That’s the whole point of having a bakery in my mind.”

THE BUTT OF ALL CAKES

STARTING FROM SCRATCH

From scrabble boards to kidneys, Coomer has baked specialty cake orders in all shapes and sizes. So far, Coomer has found children’s birthday cakes to be her favorite. “As silly as that seems, they’re just so much fun and they’re so different,” she said. One “different” cake order for a grandson’s 18th birthday also became Coomer’s most memorable one, she said. “[The grandmother] wanted a ‘butt cake’ for her grandson, so I made it,” Coomer said. “I think it was more for embarrassment then anything. I would definitely say that’s the strangest order I’ve ever gotten.” Above all else, she said she loves seeing customers’ reactions when they look at the final product. “It’s cool to see the expression on some of the kids’ faces when they have the cake they wanted,” she said, “or you make somebody’s idea in their head come true for their wedding.”

While Coomer has only been selling her sweets for the last RISING TO SUCCESS few years, her love of baking began at a young age with her A few months ago, Coomer’s business expanded when great grandmother “Kaka.” she started selling her baked goods at the new Swirlz. “My great grandma used to baby-sit me, and she always Owner Chris Hicks said when he first met Coomer, he loved to bake,” Coomer said. “So I helped her from the time I noticed her enthusiasm for baking straight away. could stand up.
