Region will feature diverse mix of music at Yum! Center

Artists from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, not to mention age brackets, invade the region next week. Country Music Hall of Famer George Strait has sold nearly 69 million records during a career spanning 30 years. His 33 different Jason Thomas, Editor platinum or multi-platinum albums rank third in all genres, only behind a dude called Elvis and the The Beatles. Arcade Fire is just beginning to blaze its own trail, but its start is red-hot. The indie group won the album of the year Grammy in 2010 for its “The Suburbs” effort, which debuted at No. 1. Its latest album, “Reflektor,” also debuted at No. 1. I’m sensing a trend here. Texas' Strait is bidding fans farewell on his “The

Homebase: “Kentuckianaâ€?; 60 percent of HBB currently reside in Southern Indiana. Back story: HBB was formed in 2009 by members from two different bands that were calling it quits. The name “Horizontal Boogie Bandâ€? actually comes from the name of a now defunct live music nightclub in Rochester, N.Y. called the “Horizontal Boogie Bar.â€? We want to be known for great live shows, our overthe-top production and packing dance floors and the name needed to reflect that. Describe your sound: Each member of HBB has completely different musical tastes as well as a different musical background. Some of us were brought up on old school country, some on folk rock, progressive rock and heavy metal to name a few. We add a lot of elements such as harmonies and that is pretty good example of how we we’re able to draw on our influences. What do you make of the SoIn music scene? The music scene here has definitely changed through the years from what we’ve seen. There seems to be a little more diversity in what bands are doing now than what was going on 5-10 years ago when bands were all doing the same thing. The scene would certainly be a better scene if there were a few

I think each have their own advantages but the one’s that put an emphasis on live music are the one’s we like to play at. Some venues are totally different. That being said, we’ve played 4th Street Live! several times for some of their big events (Derby, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day) and it’s hard to top that. The same thing can be said for RiverStage as well. Any time we’re able to do what we do on a big stage in front of a large crowd is always memorable.

Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration. But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of his church’s belief. A big-little play about faith in America — and the trouble with changing your mind.

Kai is a 10-year-old boy sitting at his grandfather’s feet, listening to a story. Or else he’s a young television writer weathering the humiliations of the Hollywood rat race. Or else he’s a salty old man in a wheelchair, receiving an award for “not being dead yet.” Has Kai run afoul of some powerful magic, or is he just living an ordinary, tooquick human life? A time-bending, sad, funny adventure about how to survive growing up.

Directed by Anne Bogart; Music and Lyrics by Julia Wolfe Original Text by Kia Corthron, Will Power, Carl Hancock Rux and Regina Taylor Recorded Music performed by Bang on a Can All-Stars and Trio Mediaeval Performed and Created by SITI Company The legend of John Henry, deeply rooted in Appalachian folklore surrounding the construction of the American railroad, has existed in many variations and forms, from illustration to tall tale, political polemic to popular song. With music from Bang on a Can’s Julia Wolfe, and incorporating text from four remarkable playwrights, Anne Bogart and SITI Company explore the human impulse to tell stories through the rich tales surrounding this American folk hero.

Created for the Acting Apprentice Company, this playful experiment pays homage to the groundbreaking work of Festivals past, while celebrating singular voices blazing new trails of their own.
