television? You can’t fake that Chicago accent. Maloof began developing the images, scanning them, and putting them on a blog, vivianmaier.blogspot.com. He still updates the blog regularly. When the blog didn’t receive as much attention as he had hoped, Maloof posted some of Maier’s work to the Flickr group Hardcore Street Photography (HCSP), asking “What do I do with this stuff (other than giving it to you)?”

“Is this type of work worthy of exhibitions, a book?” he wrote. “Or do bodies of work like this come up often? Any direction would be great.” The Internet took over from there. Fast forward to the present. Within the art world, Vivian Maier has become a posthumous celebrity. With Charlie Siskel, Maloof co-directed and produced a documentary, Finding Vivian Maier, which by the time you read this will have DOUBLE EXPOSURE continued page 42

premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Maloof also acted as the film’s director of photography. Between the Flickr post and the documentary, much has been uncovered about Maier’s life. She was described by the Baylaenders, a family on Chicago’s North Shore for whom she worked, as a private person, great with their children, and something of a packrat. (“We were not allowed into her room,” recalled Maren Baylaender on Chicago Tonight, “it was stacked up to the ceiling with papers. And boxes and boxes in our storage area downstairs in the basement.”) The first exhibition of Maier’s work, also titled “Finding Vivian Maier,” was held in Oslo. The second was in Denmark. The first American exhibition was held at the Chicago Cultural Center in January of 2011. In the summer of 2011, Wilco band member Pat Sansone curated an exhibition of 40 Maier photographs for the Massachusetts MOCA, to coincide with the Wilco Solid Sound Festival. The exhibition was only meant to hang for three days, but it proved so popular that the museum kept it up all summer. This January, the same 40 photographs will be on view at the Cal Poly University Art Gallery. Jan. 9-Feb. 14: Mark it in your collective calendar, San Luis Obispo County. I hope you realize how lucky you are. Most, if not all, of the 40 images Sansone selected depict the street life of Chicago, Wilco’s stomping grounds. It’s a curious thing to curate the work of a deceased, formerly unknown artist. No one knows what Maier herself would have selected for exhibition; Maloof has estimated that around one third of the negatives he purchased were still on the rolls. Maier hardly developed any of her body of work, and the prints she did develop are generally not of a high quality, materialswise. Many have speculated about her influences—Arbus and Cartier-Bresson ranking high on the list of likelies—but is it possible that we are merely looking at her work through the lens of what we’ve

already seen, selecting photographs that recall the masters we already know so well; identifying a photo as “strong” when what we mean is “familiar?” Would Maier herself have made other curatorial choices, perhaps showing us an alternate artistic view? Would she have chosen to display those images we now pass over as minor works, and thus made a statement: I think this is beautiful; this, above the others? We don’t know what she would have shown us. But we keep guessing, and we keep investigating into her life. She was born Feb. 1, 1926. Her mother was French, her father Austro-Hungarian. Maier began taking photos while living in the Alpine French village of Saint-Bonnet-enChampsaur. By 1930, her father appears to have left the family. Instead, census records list the head of the household as the portrait photographer Jeanne Bertrand. Maier moved to New York City in 1951, re-teaching herself English by going to the theater, according to Maloof. She moved to Chicago in 1956, and worked as a nanny there for the bulk of 40 years. The early ’50s appear to have been a very important developmental period in her work. In 1951, the year Maier arrived in New York City, the MOMA held an exhibition of cutting-edge French street photography. The first to point this out was Pamela Bannos, a photographer and teacher at Northwestern University, who shared the information with Chicago Tonight. Bannos also discovered, curiously, a photograph of Salvador Dali, taken by Maier and dated Jan. 24, 1952. Dali is standing in front of the MOMA. Within a year, Maier had upgraded to a professional camera. She walked the streets with an egalitarian eye for the human condition, capturing the young and old, the wealthy and the poor, with sympathy and humor. DOUBLE EXPOSURE continued page 46

While Maier created work in public that she showed to no one, our next subject creates work in private that he shows to the world. He is David Sedaris. What don’t we know about David Sedaris? He’s from Raleigh. His boyfriend’s name is Hugh. He owes his fame to a stint as a SantaLand elf at Macy’s. That, and his dry wit and eye for the comically grotesque, exemplified most acutely by “SantaLand Diaries,” his account of the experience. And, of course, his soft, North Carolina-tinged reading voice. When Sedaris read from “SantaLand Diaries” on NPR in 1992, his career officially took off. Get a load of this: “There was a line for Santa and a line for the women’s rest room, and one woman, after asking me a dozen questions already, asked, ‘Which is the line for the women’s bathroom?’ I shouted that I thought it was

the line with all the women in it. “She said, ‘I’m going to have you fired.’ “I had two people say that to me today, ‘I’m going to have you fired.’ Go ahead, be my guest. I’m wearing a green velvet costume; it doesn’t get any worse than this. Who do these people think they are? “‘I’m going to have you fired!’ and I wanted to lean over and say, ‘I’m going to have you killed.’” Yes. Since the success of “SantaLand,” Sedaris has published eight books of stories and essays and contributed more than 40 essays to The New Yorker. His most recent book is Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, another collection of humorous essays mixed with short stories. In support of this latest effort, Sedaris is touring again. He’ll appear in San Luis Obispo for an evening reading and book signing on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the PAC’s

Christopher Cohan Center. But there’s more Sedaris to be had this season. Santaland Diaries, Joe Mantello’s stage adaptation of the classic short story, will be produced at the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre. Managing Artistic Director Kevin Harris stars in the one-man show, which runs from Nov. 29-Dec. 21. The two events feel like bookends, neatly encapsulating all that has happened between 1992 and 2013. On the one hand is the current Sedaris: famous, middleaged, middlebrow, non-smoking, no longer working odd jobs, mixing speed with conceptual art, or rounding out the evening with five beers, two scotches, and a joint. On the other is Sedaris then: unknown and relatively poor, a state of being that seems to have necessarily involved shady apartment buildings, shadier neighbors, and reliance on sporadic, comedically demeaning employment. Couple this with

an absurd and then-untapped family history, which would be gradually, wickedly revealed in collections like Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and you’ve got a darkly comic elixir. How does Let’s Explore Diabetes, the most recent installment, compare to Sedaris’ earlier work? To begin with, the writer has settled down, resigned the last of his wicked ways, and begun making significantly better choices. Stories now center on more mundane events: a stolen passport puts the brakes on a planned book tour; a colonoscopy proves surprisingly pleasant (same goes for a trip to the dentist); a book signing in a Costco goes pitifully. These lows are no match for those chronicled in, say, “Twelve Moments in the Life of an Artist:” at least Sedaris is a successful DOUBLE EXPOSURE continued page 47

author, able to go on book tours, albeit ones that include Costco, instead of doing performance art on drugs, or cleaning homes in Manhattan for wealthy customers, one of whom just so happens to have confused his number with that of an erotic cleaning service, leading to a cringeworthy comedy of errors. His observations still crackle, of course: describing a salesperson, phoning from some faraway call center, Sedaris writes, “The man spoke with an accent, and though I couldn’t actually place it, I knew he was poor. His voice had snakes in it. And dysentery, and mangoes.” He still attracts bizarre situations, as in a London taxidermy shop in “Understanding Understanding Owls,” where the clerk reveals such coveted treasures as the skulls of murdered pygmies and a sailor’s remarkably preserved forearm. A heady tale of two trains—and two missed chances at love!—from Sedaris’ single days looks even wilder in contrast to more current travel accounts. Last, like an old sage, he shows the kids how it’s done, letting us in on his daily process of diary entries and compulsive notes on overheard conversations, dubious bits of information, and unusually attired young people. Like Maier, the unsuspecting world is his raw material.

III. We know precious little about Maier. In fact, this mystery is part of her allure. On the other hand, private details are the currency of Sedaris’ work, so much so that upon the publication of his most recent book, the humorist has been criticized as having exhausted his best and most absurd tales. What links the two, if anything, is their compulsive documentation. They’ve combed through the urban landscape and recorded what they find funny, gross, wonderful, and bizarre. They made observation an art form. For Maier, it seems, the process was enough; the peripatetic capturing of life as it passed by. The results appear to have been inconsequential, and she saw the vast majority of her images only once—through the viewfinder of her Rolleiflex camera. Sedaris’ work is, of course, is made for sharing, which he’ll do at the PAC in November. Without Maloof, however, the world of Maier might forever have been lost. ∆

abstractions “Multifaceted and Polyamorous” is the title of artist Julia Hickey’s upcoming exhibit, a series of abstract geometric paintings, which will be on view Oct. 4-27 at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. A crime reporter by day and artist by night, Hickey rarely plans an artwork in advance, instead aiming to “obliterate organized forms by spraying, masking, and scraping,” the artist explains in press materials. “Have you ladies been drinking?” The Wrestling Bacchantes was created by Italian artist Petrilla for the 1904 World’s Fair and brought to Atascadero in 1916 by city founder E.G. Lewis—who must have had one heck of a hunch to import priestesses of Bacchus to future wine country. After sitting outside for years of drunken revelry and exposure to the elements, the statue has now been restored to its former glory. The Bacchantes will be unveiled in Atascadero’s Sunken Gardens on Sept. 22 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; the day will include art displays and wine tasting (tickets may be purchased for $12 in advance and $15 the day of the event). 1010 Broad St., San Luis Obispo.
