The Shredder

Sign of the times

D

riving north through Atascadero yesterday, I suddenly felt like getting stoned and checking out the Charles Paddock Zoo. That’s because advertising works! On the east side of Highway 101, there’s a big billboard that says Diamond Cannabis with a stony green crystalized pot leaf, and on the far right is a city of Atascadero-sponsored ad for the zoo. It was awesome to get high and check out the white-eared titi monkey and the kinkajou. The Malayan tiger and blood python were too scary, yo. Warning: If you’re really high, steer clear of the axolotl! It’s haunted my dreams. After the dope wore off, I thought, is it just me, or does it seem weird to find a city that’s done everything in its legal power to limit access to medical marijuana associating itself with a mobile weed delivery service? I guess since the city has a deal with the outside advertising company that owns billboards to take 20 percent of each sign for city promotion, they’re willing to be strange bed fellows. It’s a sign of the times. And speaking of signs, someone apparently ran over 3rd District county supervisor candidate and SLO Vice Mayor Dan Carpenter’s sign on Highway 227 … twice! Carpenter claims the sign, secured by wooden posts, was knocked down one night, reset the next day, and knocked down again that night. He claims there were tire tracks and

reactionary? Is Hill? Hmm? Meanwhile, up in Santa Margarita, some jackhole has been stealing yard signs promoting 5th District supervisor candidate Eric Michielssen, who has not given his permission to do so. I guess Debbie Arnold supporters—or only one of them—think the only way to defeat Michielssen is through theft and vandalism. Come on, people! This race is getting dirtier than a gravel quarry! Is it a sign of the Apocalypse that Donald Trump has sealed the Republican nomination or merely a sign that America, or at least the part supporting Trump, is dumber than a sack of combed-over hair? It only took this week’s pro-Trump commentator Gary Wechter until the end of his second paragraph to prove that last week’s commentator Zaf Iqbal was right to call Trump supporters ignorant and racist. “And, by the way, what kind of a name is ‘Zaf Iqbal’?” Wechter asks. “Is Mr. Iqbal a U.S. citizen? Is he eligible to vote?” OK, my editor took that part out, but that’s how Wechter submitted it. Later in his essay Wechter complains that “race relations are at an all-time low” in the U.S. Hmm. Maybe that’s because the Trump-voting segment of our population too quickly judges a person based on an unfamiliar name (or appearance or whatever), accusing said person of being

Is it a sign of the Apocalypse that Donald Trump has sealed the Republican nomination or merely a sign that America, or at least the part supporting Trump, is dumber than a sack of combed-over hair? broken plastic from damaged headlight covers, maybe. That’s good police work, Danny Boy! Book ’em! Detective Carpenter initially deduced it was a dirty trick by his opponent 3rd District Supervisor Adam Hill or one of his evil minions and not, for instance, some drunk idiot or someone who swerved off the road to avoid a jackalope two nights in a row. It could happen! It’s jackalope season! “This particular incumbent, it’s not uncommon for him to go to any length to make sure no one defeats him,” Carpenter told New Times. “This is indicative of his type of politicking. He’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’m not surprised.” To which Hill retorted, “I think Dan cares more about his signs than I do about mine. Dan is up against his own anger control problems. He’s just an angry guy. I’m the latest person he hates. I’m OK with it. It gives his city manager and City Council a break.” Did you hear that, Carpenter supporters? Sounds like Hill just gave you carte blanche to drive your monster trucks over Hill-for-supervisor signs. Woo hoo! Eat dirt, Hill! Oh, and Carpenter later recanted his assertion that Hill might have something to do with the sign damage because, you know, he’s not really a detective. Is he really an angry

an illegal immigrant. What do you think, Herr Wechter? Hopefully, I’ll get some angry letters from Trump supporters. I’ll carefully correct all the misspellings and grammar problems in bright red ink and mail them back with little frowny faces. Then they’ll call me a grammar Nazi and I’ll tell them they’re supporting an actual Nazi. There’ll be hell toupee! What can I say? I love feedback, which was why I was extra excited to see 24th District Congressional candidate John Uebersax write to tell me, “Hey and fuck you for not telling people I’m an anti-war candidate. What do I need to do, send you a candy-gram?” You know, now that I think about it, Mr. Uebersax seems to have just the right temperament to represent me in Congress. I’m also anti-war, prone to profanity, and have zero chance of being elected to public office. To be fair, he said he was just joking about the “fuck you” part. Seriously? If you don’t want me to use it, don’t write it in the fist place. I can see my yard sign now: “Vote for Shredder for whatever!” ∆ The Shredder is unfit to hold public office but will shred dirty pols’ secret docs. SLO COUNTY 2016

BEST NORTH COUNTY RESTaURaNT (San Miguel,

Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, Santa Margarita)

The Range

22317 El Camino Real, Santa Margarita The Range is the kind of place that even the most in-the-know foodie may not know. That is until the word-of-mouth reputation comes around. Owners Jeff and Lindsay Jackson consider this haven to be “honky-tonk French fusion”—it’s got a heavy hand of both country traditions and the culinary gourmet. Come for the great steaks, the Southern fried chicken, or the local organic “fresh kill.” If you’re headed in, remember: no credit cards, no reservations, and Google Maps will get you lost. All you need to know is it’s next to the gas station and across the street from the liquor store and post office. —Jono Kinkade

Robin’s

4095 Burton Drive, Cambria The salmon bisque is always good at Robin’s in Cambria. It’s beloved, according to Molly Kiely, the restaurant’s marketing manager, and much like Robin’s philosophy—sourcing high quality ingredients to create wholesome comfort food that keeps guests returning for warm hospitality and deliciousness— that creamy little number has never changed. Consistency coupled with a menu that fluctuates with the seasons are the fundamentals that make Robin’s customers happy. But there’s also an airy garden patio and that happy hour menu. For instance: nibble on steamed mussels in coconut milk for $5. Sounds like a good reason to play hooky. —Camillia Lanham

Best Coffee Roaster is an important and competitive category for SLO’s caffeine enthusiasts and bean connoisseurs (count me in), and Coastal Peaks Coffee produces some great coffee, owner Michael Knight told us. “We do all roast levels, and we’re a little bit different than everyone else.” Coastal Peaks combines coffee beans from all corners of the world into more than 35 unique blends for the community to enjoy. My Love Letter to the

readers (at least those of you who voted for me):

WHAT???!!!? WHO ME????

Jere N. Sullivan Jr. Best Lawyer

That was my initial reaction to learning that I had been voted the Best Lawyer in SLO County. I’m not even sure I’m the best lawyer in my office complex area! I first heard that I had won one of the poll categories by phone message on April 1, so you know what I thought might be going on. I didn’t get to meet with the New Times Staff until the following week, so I’m thinking, did I win best pony tailed lawyer (since I’m the last one here), or best lawyer who plays music on the side (beating out Jeff Minnery of Truth About Seafood)? So, since I did nothing to self promote my way into this, I was totally stunned to find out I have been honored by you, dear readers, as being the best lawyer in SLO. Wow!!!! I am humbled, and honored by this true honor. I’m in the later stage of my career, which spans almost 40 years, and, in a way, this feels much like an Oscar Lifetime Achievement award. So, like all the other gushing recipients, it’s time for the Thank Yous. To my colleagues in the Criminal Defense Bar, you all care about fairness and justice for our clients, and this honors all of us. To my opposing lawyers, good and bad, you all taught me something, and I have had wonderful relationships from those experiences. To my clients, for having the confidence in me to handle their cases and hopefully do them right. To my assistant, Kathy, who does her best to keep me grounded, despite all of the obstacles I place in her way which makes that an unenviable task. To those who put up with me before her: most notably Becky, April, and Carly. A special thanks to Sandi, for having the will to get us out of Bakersfield in 1986, and giving me the courage to take the risk of abandoning a good law practice there to be able to live, work and play in America’s Best City (that’s stolen from my good friend and Giant’s broadcaster, Mike Krukow). To my children, Jesse and Liz, who make me proud to be their Dad. To the Central Coast’s Treasure and once again voted Best Local Entertainer, Louie Ortega, for allowing me to be a part of the best music experience I’ve ever had (what we call the Solo Band; come see us on June 5th at the Sea Venture, when we resume our musical brotherhood). To Lisa… for teaching me how to look at life with new eyes. Most of all, thank you New Times Poll Voters, for believing what I don’t: that I deserve this. It means more than I can express. 36 • New Times • May 12 - May 19, 2016 • www.newtimesslo.com

682 Higuera St., SLO Having toys to play with is really for everybody, but especially for the little ones. Tom’s Toys has provided them with fun for the last 50 years. With every toy comes joy and free gift-wrapping. It’s a real-life independent toy store, not like all that box store mumbo jumbo—and that’s something SLO County residents seem to appreciate. Get your train tooting or your scooter scooting, and head in for something furry, colorful, or made of real wood! It’ll add a little pep in your step that Toys“R”Us can only dream about. —Olivia

runner up: Whiz Kids

560 Avila Beach Drive, SLO It’s a great spot to buy the fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, and it’s so much more. You can pick your own fresh berries and fruit or harvest the perfect pumpkin. Owned by Bruce and Debbie Smith, the Avila Valley Barn is a family affair that’s is 30 years old. “Our team of bakers, orchard workers, animal caretakers, and employees are wonderful,” Debbie said. “Jake and Raven Smith maintain our orchards and Jesse Smith runs our deli and sweet shop!” Go for the healthy produce, but pick up a fresh baked pie for dessert. “Every person who walks in our door is a blessing!” she said. —Ariel

BEST SHOE STORE

Charles Shoes

867 Higuera St., SLO In February of this year, the current owners of Charles Shoes celebrated 50 years of ownership. Asked how things have been during that time, and how they’ve survived in an era where even strip malls struggle and commerce has moved to the internet, Jason Ashley, who manages his family’s business, said that it is all about the personal, custom service that helps people find the right fit. “So much has changed, the customers have appreciated the continued level of service that they don’t get anymore.” —Jono

BEST GROCERY STORE

BEST TIRE STORE

California Fresh Market

555 5 Cities Drive, Pismo Beach You know the jingle. “California Fresh is best. Your Five Cities grocery store.” It’s too damn catchy. But it’s also pretty damn accurate. “If you take the top 150 items in the store, 50 of them are items we make,” said one of the owners, Greg King. They prepare food like fresh sushi, potato salad, and sourdough—and none of it tastes like it’s from the grocery store. They even roast their own coffee, and if you ask King, that’s as close to heavenly as you can get. The trio of partners is taking their duo of stores to the next level and opening a new one in SLO. Get excited! —Camillia

In 1886, two prospectors started drilling for oil, but they found hot sulfur mineral water—the pair established a spa and mineral springs resort along what’s now Avila Beach Drive. In the 1930s, Hollywood celebrities would stop on their way out to Hearst Castle. It eventually became a destination to cure aches, pains, and arthritis. Now, it’s committed to continuing its legacy as a California mineral springs resort, and the locals like it that way. The resort’s won Best Massage in SLO County for 15 out of the last 16 years—of course, you get a mineral soak before that massage.

We turned 30 and won the award for Best Local News source all in the same year. It’s our first time for both! Happy Birthday to us! No, we didn’t rig it—or did we? In 1985, Steve Moss thought this town needed more out of its local news coverage. He spent the next 20 years building the New Times way—fearless, honest, fair, and just reporting. It’s a legacy that continues more than 10 years after his death with a community of readers that pushes us to constantly be better than we are, and always reminds us of where we came from. 52 • New Times • May 12 - May 19, 2016 • www.newtimesslo.com

They also move victims of domestic violence to shelters or new homes for free and organize supply drives for disaster victims. “We are grateful to be trusted as the No. 1 mover and will continue to work hard to improve our value to our community,” Aaron said. —Ariel

1141 Pacific St., SLO The New Times Best Of SLO County list is, allegedly, a reflection of the literate 805 community. If true, then, Dear Reader, I implore you to take a cab. The 2016 Best Lawyer in SLO County—allegedly—is the good-humored Jere N. Sullivan, who said DUI cases are his bread and butter. That, domestic violence cases, and enacting evictions. Sullivan has been a defense lawyer in the county for four decades, and he said winning is huge honor (allegedly). “This is like getting the Oscar for a lifetime achievement award,” Sullivan said. “I am looking at it as a reflection of those 40 years.” —Kylie

LOVR Bridge Widening

101 exit at Los Osos Valley Road, SLO After more than 18 months of construction, SLO city residents finally get to see some relief from the frustrating traffic at the Los Osos Valley Road interchange. The city’s largest capital improvement project cost an estimated $24.5 million for the construction alone and about $35.3 million total. As of late April, the project is essentially finished, according to Kyle Rowland, the project’s manager. While the construction may have been a headache for SLO drivers, Rowland said most people acknowledged the need for the project, and he thanked the public for their patience. “The cooperation from the public was amazing,” Rowland said. —Chris

SLO Stringer

Parts unknown, SLO County SLO County is a busy place, and when SLO residents want breaking news, they apparently want it as close to instantly as possible. Whether it’s a wildfire in the

rugged hills, a police chase, or yet another vehicle wreck snarling traffic along the 101, SLO Stringer is on the scene, posting the information, pics, and video to his— or her—popular Facebook and Twitter accounts. Who is SLO Stringer? No one is sure. The mystery man (or woman) behind the accounts didn’t return requests from New Times for comment. This writer pictures an intrepid citizen with a mask

BEST NONPROFIT

Woods Humane Society

875 Oklahoma Ave., SLO We can’t count how many times Woods Humane Society has taken the Best Nonprofit award in New Times’ history. It would take too much staff time. Safe to say, since 1955, Woods has worked heroically to find loving homes for dogs and cats, provide spay/neuter surgeries, and offer dog training classes, humane education for children, and pet visitation for seniors. “The support of our community makes it possible for Woods to touch the lives of thousands of animals each year,” Executive Director Jill Tucker said. Be on the lookout for an even larger Woods presence, as they plan to build a much-needed clinic in North County. —Peter

BEST FRIEND TO THE ENvIRONmENT

BEST ELECTED OFFICIaL

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County

Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian

The longtime local politician has done well for himself and his district, readers say. Known commonly as Katcho, he has a reputation of being well-liked both in district and in Sacramento. That friendliness extends beyond his politics and has allowed him to garner plenty of support during his political ascendancy, all while staying clear of any major scandals or controversies. Katcho will term out of the state Assembly this year, and he’s currently aiming to take Congresswoman Lois Capps’ open seat. It will be the toughest election he’s ever faced. —Jono

YOUR GUY

35th District state Assemblymember Katcho Achadjian is moving from state to national politics as New Times’ readers’ pick for Best Elected Official in SLO County. Will it help him in the race for the 24th District Congressional seat? I guess we’ll find out soon.

1137 Pacific St., suite A, SLO Conservation. Care. Connection. That’s the triple-C threat that the Land Conservancy of SLO County is aiming for with things like conserving and allowing access to the Pismo Preserve and restoring the Octagon Barn into a sort of community hub. With those projects, the conservancy went from quietly doing environmental work on small land parcels to being up front—alongside your commute—and taking on bigger pieces of land. “All of these projects have these multiple benefits to them, and people are really excited,” Executive Director Kaila Dettman said. “They all hit on those things, the whole package.” ◆ —Camillia
