BEST VEGETARIAN FARE

Big Sky Cafe

1121 Broad St., SLO At many restaurants, vegetarian food is more of an afterthought. To make a vegetarian dish sparkle, it’s about making flavor profiles accessible with vegetables. Big Sky does just that with every option, every time. Ask anyone who’s tried the beet Reuben with housecured sauerkraut and Jarlsberg cheese. Or the authentic Mexican pozole, which was the only thing I ordered the first times I went to Big Sky. Seriously. Then I moved on to the Big Sky noodle bowl: It’s got marinated mushrooms that I dream about. “It’s good food that just happens to be vegetarian,” said Greg Holt, executive chef and owner. —Erica Runner-up: Natural Cafe DINING OUT continued page 20

BEST JAPANESE FOOD

Goshi Japanese Restaurant

570 Higuera St., suite 155, SLO Whenever and wherever I find sushi, I always order albacore tataki, and I’m always disappointed because it’s never as good as Goshi’s. Maybe it’s because Goshi is so selective about their fish, maybe it’s because their tataki sauce is something unknown to others, or maybe it’s because their sushi chefs are culinary geniuses dedicated to their craft—whatever the reason, I’ve never found another Japanese restaurant to compare. If sushi isn’t your cup of hot sake, they also have delicious grilled teriyaki and tempura dishes, and their Dynamite—baked baby shrimp, crab meat, bay scallops, and clams in a creamy mayonnaise sauce—is dynamite! —Glen Starkey Runner-up: Yanagi Sushi & Grill

BEST KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT

Sylvester’s Burgers

Los Osos, Atascadero, Oceano What kid doesn’t love hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, grilled cheese, and chicken strips? Sylvester’s has them all served with a big helping of fun! The friendly staff makes every experience memorable with funny hats and birthday pics they post on Sylvester’s Facebook page. The food is yummy. The prices are great, especially if you’re feeding a youth sports team or a herd of birthday revelers. The Babywood Burger is huge and comes with a generous side of fries and small drink with free refills. And everyone gets a free burger on their birthday—AWESOME! —Ariel Runner-up: Gino’s Pizza

BEST CHEAP EATS

Urbane Café

925 Higuera St., SLO Urbane Café’s owner Tom Holt never wants to be out of range for people. “He always wants to make sure that things are affordable,” said Christi Christian, director of marketing. “He wants to be someplace that people can go two to three times a week.” And did you know they don’t use any bread that’s more than 40

minutes old? “We’re constantly baking it right there before their eyes,” she added. Fresh-baked focaccia, fresh-picked produce, and meal prices that hover around $10. That’s a deal worth voting for. Look for a remodel of the downtown spot sometime this fall. —Camillia Runner-up: Firestone Grill

BEST MEAL TO TREAT YOURSELF

Ember

1200 E. Grand Ave., suite 101, Arroyo Grande Ember in Arroyo Grande’s wood-fired Italian-inspired menu items earned the restaurant readers’ vote for best meal to treat yourself. Chef and owner Brian Collins said Ember boasts a monthly changing menu of wood-fire-grilled items using ingredients from local farms, and he recommends that hungry customers looking to treat themselves choose from that selection of dishes. “We have a warm, rustic atmosphere,” Collins said. “The kitchen and the open fires are right up front and on display, so it’s part of the show.” Ember also features a local wine list, perfect for pairing. —Brenna Runner-up: Novo Restaurant & Lounge

BEST FISH MARKET

Giovanni’s Fish Market & Galley 1001 Front St., Morro Bay The hot item at Giovanni’s this year has been the Dungeness crab. “We’ve had a really good season here this year, so we’ve been sourcing from our local boats,” executive assistant Casey Peterson said. “We didn’t have a season last year.” That’s because of a toxic algae bloom in the Pacific that shut down crabbing season in 2016. The seasons always change, but Giovanni’s motto has always been that you can expect the best from their dockside spot. “So we always try to have the best fish in the area … I think that’s why we’re still around and have been so successful for over 30 years,” Peterson said. —Camillia Runner-up: Olde Port Fisheries

BEST BUTCHER

Arroyo Grande Meat Company

120 E. Branch St., Arroyo Grande Owners Henry and Julie Gonzalez have been providing superior, fine meats for 25 years in a century-old butcher shop in the Village of Arroyo Grande. “We’re like stepping back in time to how it used to be,” Henry said. They offer Oregon Painted Hills grass-fed beef, pork cut to order, venison, elk, and buffalo. “Our

free-range Rocky chickens are so moist and tender, having no shots or hormones,” he said. Henry makes about 40 varieties of sausages like Swedish potato, tangy Afrikaner boerewors, and English bangers. “This is an incredible honor and we’re really grateful people support us,” said Gonzalez. “They’re the reason we’re in business.” —Ariel Runner-up: J & R Meats

BEST FOOD TRUCK

The Grilled Cheese Incident

Facebook When you saunter up to the window of this food truck, there’s no religion and no politics, and you certainly can’t judge another person’s grilled cheese. Chef Mike McGourty spent his younger years grilling up cheese and bread after Grateful Dead concerts for gas money to get to the next show. He also spent 10 years at the Cracked Crab in Pismo before his wife, Annie Lynch, convinced him to quit his chef’s job and start the food truck. “She was right as always,” he said. The win is bittersweet for McGourty, who lost his wife about four months ago, but he said he’s happy to be back on the road and watching people smile as they stuff their faces with cheese-filled pleasure. —Camillia Runner-up: Gusto on the Go

BEST DISTILLERY

Re:Find Distillery

2725 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles While craft spirits are the latest alcoholic darling to spring up in Paso Robles, which now boasts a whole distillery trail, Re:Find Distillery was one of the region’s hard-alcohol trailblazers. “We put a lot of energy into educating consumers about craft spirits,” owner Monica Villicana said. The distillery creates gin, vodka, seasonal sips like limoncello, and even a rye whiskey. Re:Find is also bringing the good stuff to downtown Paso Robles by turning the old Fox Theatre into a tasting room and distillery while keeping that iconic movie house look. —Ryah Runner-up: SLO Brew

BEST PLACE TO DANCE

The Graduate

990 Industrial Way, SLO Are you even surprised? The Graduate has dominated this category for years, and it absolutely deserves it. Though it’s known for having the largest dance floor on the Central Coast, what really makes its reputation are those theme nights. Country Night and Latin Night happen weekly and are the most popular, but The Grad also draws huge crowds with its occasional EDM events. To General Manager Rich Simoneau, their success is pretty straightforward: “We’ve got a large, open dance floor. We’re always playing

what the people want to hear … . We’re obviously doing what the people want.” —Katrina Runner-up: Mother’s Tavern

BEST CLUB TO CATCH A BAND

100 Madonna Road, SLO It seems like you can’t walk two steps in SLO County without stumbling into an awesome taproom or craft brewery. The SLO Craft Beer Festival is a great showcase for all those special suds, and this year’s fest took place at the Alex Madonna Expo Center from Feb. 24 through 25. The fest not only rolled out a plethora of tasty craft beers for attendees to try, but also provided food pairings and educational seminars. It was hosted by Pouring for Good, an organization with the goal to “preserve the history and culture of craft beverages through public awareness and education.” Cheers! —Chris Runner-up: AG Strawberry Festival

Atascadero Local photographer and activist Brittany App is all about using her art to tell a story and spread awareness. “I want people to feel like we’re all able to make a positive difference in the world,” App said. While her images run the gamut from landscape photography to weddings, App’s current pet project is a documentary about the recent California drought, Where There Once Was Water. According to App, it “explores our current relationship with water through the complex web of water relationships in California, and explores ideas for moving collectively toward an equitable water future for all.” The film is slated for release in 2018. —Ryah Runner-up: Cameron Ingalls

Shell Beach For the past 20 years or so, artist Lena Rushing has made her mark in SLO with contemporary, women-centric, and narrative paintings. Her art even adorns the covers of a few local authors’ books. “I think it’s different,” Rushing said. “I’m unworthy, but I’m super grateful.” Up next for Rushing is a collaborative group show with artists from around the country celebrating women’s rights. Look for it at Studios on the Park in Paso in October. —Ryah Runner-up: Sara Lane

1130 Pine St., Paso Robles Years ago, Paso Robles didn’t even have a movie theater, but today it boasts that plus one of the bigger art galleries around. Studios on the Park is a stalwart of the growing city’s downtown area. “I think we care about everyone who walks through our doors and we do our best to be their art studio,” said Sasha Irving, director for the gallery. In addition to art from near and far, the studio hosts artist’s talks, free art education for kids, and even cookie decorating classes. —Ryah Runner-up: San Luis Obispo Museum of Art

791 Dolliver St., Pismo Beach Ink Dynasty owner Keith Duggan believes in the right to bare arms! A tattoo artist since 2000, he said, “I’ve drawn my whole life, got tattoos as a teenager, then realized I could make a profession of it,” Duggan said. “I like realism and Japanese style artwork with dragons, horses, and other figures from Japanese mythology.” He tattoos by appointment only, with quite a wait list. He creates tattoos small and large, and like a Giotto fresco, he inks them in sections. He does cover-ups or recommends laser removal if a cover-up won’t get the job done. Either way, he wants the end product to be “top notch.” —Ariel Runner-up: Danny Derrick at SLO Tattoo Company

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE

Vina Robles

3700 Mills Rd., Paso Robles There’s nothing quite like fine wine, good music, and scenic vineyards, and Vina Robles has all three. Plus, there isn’t really a bad seat in the entire amphitheater. Paul Leatherman, general manager for the venue, said, “the rolling hills of oaks combined with the outdoor setting” make it an ideal spot to take in a concert. Bryan Adams, Slayer, Idina Menzel, and more will grace its stage this summer. —Ryah Runner-up: Fremont Theater

BEST COMMUNITY EVENT

Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market

Higuera Street, SLO Each Thursday evening locals sell everything from soup to nuts on Higuera Street. Farmers’ Market Manager Ariana Burton said there’s usually more than 100 local vendors and there’s always entertainment by local performers. The market is a wonderful venue for community organizations like Cal Poly’s open house, local high school students sharing their experiments, and STEAM Alley (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), an interactive learning experience of experiments, technology, and art for kids of all ages. Cal Poly brings an entire biology class every third Thursday. Then there’s the food! “We usually have eight barbecue areas,” Burton said. “I’ve met so many people and made so many friends. It’s really great!” —Ariel Runner-up: Concerts in the Plaza

Best Weekend Getaway in SLO County

ANOTHER YEAR,

ANOTHER AWARD,

HO HUM???.....NOT!!!! I tried to think of something humorous to say in my ad, but the best I could come up with is this headline. I am humbled and gratified that once again I am considered by you, the voters of the New Times Best Of Readers Poll, to be one of the top lawyers in SLO County. After a year of personal and professional challenges, I’ve got my legal mojo back, and I remain dedicated to serving my clients to the best of my ability. Since I don’t solicit any of you in an attempt to receive your vote, being honored again this year, makes this particularly special. The fact that you bestowed this award on me freely, and not as a reaction to an effort in self-marketing for recognition, is something I will always cherish. As I said last year when I was voted best lawyer in the Reader’s Poll, I have difficulty believing that I am worthy of this accolade, but your faith in me renews my hope that one day I might achieve that goal. I thank you again with all my heart!! I thank the same folks I did last year, but also have to give quick thanks to Scott Strahl, who is learning how to cope with being my new assistant. He’s an excellent gatekeeper, who cuts through the legal jargon and explains what’s what in a way that lets a client know his or her situation. Finally, again I thank Louie Ortega, our Central Coast musical treasure, and my band mates in the “Solo Band”. Playing with them keeps my spirit young. We’re in Ramona Park on July 2nd for Grover’s Summer Concert series. Come see why this band is so special!!

Spay Or Neuter Your Pets! Spaying or neutering your pet is often referred to as having them "fixed" There are many benefits to having your dog or cat "fixed." They include: • Decreasing the chances of your pet roaming the neighborhood • In males, there is no chance for testicular cancer • In females, there is no chance for ovarian cancer • Other reproductive related cancers (such as mammary cancer) are greatly reduced • Spayed and neutered animals live longer, healthier lives

Old wives tales exist about pets gaining weight after being fixed, or them not being as affectionate. Neither of these beliefs are true. Pets do not gain weight because they are fixed. Pets gain weight because of diet and lack of exercise. Pets that are spayed or neutered are just as affectionate after being fixed, as they were before. Remember, it is a small one time cost that provides many benefits and can help avoid many expensive health issues.

The nonprofit has ample land off Buckley Road to work with, and they use it wisely by providing first-class facilities and amenities, a variety of services including pet training, and an expert staff. “We socialize our dogs every day based on size and temperament,” manager Alex Davis said. “Our staff goes above and beyond.” Another cool fact: Thousand Hills offers great work experience to Cal Poly students pursuing careers with animals. —Peter Runner-up: Stenner Creek Animal Hospital

And that’s what she loves to hear about kids who have gone through her day care. “I’ve had over 170 babies because that’s what these children are to me,” Reed said. “With this job you’re inviting them into your life for life, so that’s why we say they’re a rugrat for life.” She said her child care service is different from the rest because she does it from a home setting with a large number of teachers who help each child grow and learn. —Karen Runner-up: Cal Poly ASI Children’s Center

After LA billionaires Lynda and Stewart Resnick bought out Justin Vineyards and Winery, they were caught clear-cutting oak trees west of Paso Robles to make room for a vineyard expansion, leaving hundreds of acres of quintessential North County hillsides barren. Aerial photos of the scene shot by concerned neighbors went viral and sparked outrage across the county and

He accuses his SLO County Board of Supervisor colleagues of being un-collegial when more often than not he’s the one who appears rude. OK, fine, but let me say this: The man’s a bulldog for his constituents. He’s a fighter for the people. He doesn’t go along to get along. He kicks ass and takes names. for maintaining more than 500 miles of major and minor paved roads. And that’s not counting city roads. In November, a countywide sales tax initiative, also called Measure J, failed to pass. In April, California lawmakers passed a transportation bill that, among other measures, increased the state’s gas tax. The legislation is expected to generate $52.4 billion for road repairs in the state over the next 10 years. —Chris Runner-up: Education

THE BEST Readers voted SLOstringer as the Best Social Media Presence for the second year in row. But the win is bittersweet, as Matthew Frank (the SLOStringer) passed away in a car accident earlier this year.

BEST ELECTED OFFICIAL

SLO Mayor Heidi Harmon

SLO This year, SLO’s favorite politician is also one of its newest. Mayor Heidi Harmon was elected in November, when she defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Jan Marx by just 47 votes. “It is such an honor being SLO’s mayor and I am so excited about what is still to come,” Harmon told New Times. “I know it is true that a mayor is only as good as her council members, staff, and especially her community members.” Harmon has set some ambitious goals in the wake of her election win, including pushing SLO become a “champion” in combating climate change by becoming a “zero emissions” city. —Chris Runner-up: Aaron Gomez

BEST SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

Matthew Frank, aka SLOstringer

SLO County This year SLO County mourned the loss of Matthew Frank, also known as SLOstringer. Working anonymously as SLOstringer, Frank cultivated a massive following on social media as he covered breaking news on the Central Coast, posting photos and videos to his social media pages. Working independently, Frank’s goal was not only to show residents in the county what was happening in their community, but also to highlight the work of local law enforcement and other first responders. “My son lived his life doing what he absolutely loved,” Steven, Frank’s father, said. Sadly, Frank died in a vehicle accident in the early morning hours of March 21. In the wake of his death, Frank’s family saw an outpouring of support from SLOstringer’s followers. Steven estimated that at least 700 people attended his son’s memorial services, which included representatives from the numerous fire and police agencies that worked with SLOstringer. “It’s just statement to the fact the everybody in fire and law enforcement in this county appreciated Matthew for showing the job they do every day,” he said. This is the second year in a row that SLOstringer won in this category. —Chris Runner-up: Dave Hovde, KSBY

BEST NONPROFIT

Woods Humane Society

875 Oklahoma Ave., SLO SLO County’s most beloved place to adopt a furry friend had a recordbreaking 2016: 1,758 total adoptions. That’s five cats or dogs adopted per day. It’s the most animals Woods Humane Society has ever found homes for in one year. The nonprofit also completed 3,700 spay/neuter operations, expanded its cattery, raised more than $1 million, and completed a merger with North County Humane Society (with plans to open a low-cost spay/neuter clinic there). “We’re so grateful for the community’s support,” Executive Director Jill Tucker said. “It takes the entire community to make us run.” —Peter Runner-up: Big Brothers Big Sisters

BEST FRIEND TO THE ENVIRONMENT

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County 1137 Pacific St., suite A, SLO One of the perks about living in SLO County is all the natural scenery, and The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County aims to keep it that way. The nonprofit organization has helped to conserve more than 15,000 acres of county land. “Through it all, we provide opportunities that bond people to the

heritage, wonder, and bounty of our vital lands,” the organization’s website proclaims. The conservancy is behind the Pismo Preserve and the restoration of the Octagon Barn. This is the second year in a row the conservancy has won this category, so I’m sure all the trees in SLO County would hug them right back if they could. —Chris Runner-up: Santa Lucia Chapter of the Sierra Club

BEST LOCAL VETERANS SUPPORT ORGANIZATION

Elks Lodge No. 322

222 Elks Lane, SLO “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” Established in 1868, the BPOE is known for its charitable outreach. SLO’s Lodge No. 322 supports local veterans organizations. “We donate socks, toiletries, and gloves for homeless veterans,” said Veterans Chair Donna Donovan. The lodge also provides funding for veterans attending Cuesta College and Cal Poly to help defray the costs of parking permits, and it provided computers and printers for their veterans’ centers. “We also help the Fresno V.A. Hospital rehabilitation unit,” Donovan said. “We also donate to Ride-On van for rides for veterans, and members volunteer to knit afghans and caps for veterans.” —Ariel Runner-up: SLO County Veteran Services

BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING SLO

Affordable housing and lack of jobs

A clear indicator for why New Times readers chose affordable housing (and lack of jobs) as SLO County’s biggest problem is the Housing Authority of SLO’s (HASLO) answering machine. “All housing waiting lists are closed,” a robotic voice says. “The Section 8 housing choice voucher program waiting list is also closed.” Yep, if you’re in need of an affordable rental in SLO right now, you can’t even get on a waiting list. “It’s a huge problem,” said Scott Smith, HASLO’s executive director. “The good news is a lot of organizations have identified it as a problem. Hopefully, working together we can create some solutions.” Δ —Peter Runner-up: Homelessness
