THE W ILD SIDE! Life

in this area is colorful, beautiful, exotic. Luckily, you have New Times’’ 25th annual Best of SLO County readers poll to use as a field guide. Acting on tips from locals, we spent hours, days, weeks, and months observing business owners in their natural environment, spying on the feeding habits of various city residents, scouting watering holes, and cataloging the flora and fauna that populate this popular corner of the globe. Check out predators and prey, carnivores and herbivores in Dining Out [6],, discover nocturnal activities in After Hours [30], find a dazzling display in Arts Scene [44],, ponder the give and take of Burnin’ Money [52],, explore the territory in About Town [60], head deep into the bush in Get Out [70], and heighten your senses with help from Community Watch [76]. A top-notch crew of naturalists compiled this extensive and indispensable document, from field observers—also known as loyal New Times readers and voters—to the counters who tallied and tabulated the data to the design crew whose taxonomic structure framed the publication. As you venture into the geography at the heart of this issue, remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints—unless you’re buying something from a shop, in which case you should take whatever you’re interested in and leave money. Otherwise it’s shoplifting, a practice on which the society frowns. Happy hunting! —Ryan Miller editor

Don’t tell anyone, but you can spice up your meal here with some chilies. Just ask for them. Your order taker won’t even bat an eyelash. Guests at In-N-Out can also—I hear—get root beer floats. Many of this beloved fast-food chain’s off-menu items may be secret, but its popularity certainly isn’t. Everyone knows that animal-style burgers satisfy like nothing else in North County, making this establishment a favored stop in Atascadero for locals and travelers alike. Got kids in the car? That friendly server at the drive-thru window will give you some stickers to keep the little monkeys busy. And you thought you were cool because you knew about double-doubles. —Ryan Miller

We appreciate your business.

Thank you for voting us “Best Butcher.”

Rome’s symbol is a she-wolf, and when you dine at Gina’s, you’ll want to wolf down everything on the menu! “We offer simple, fresh Italian food, made from scratch, and not overly spicy,” said new owner Manuel Estrella (manager and chef for eight years). Gina’s has been serving supremo Italian food for more than 14 years, and Estrella created many of the dishes. “People come for my ravioli,” he beamed. Recently I slurped up both minestrone and potato pomodoro soups, il primi filled with succulent veggies, il secondo a creamy puree without cream! Meraviglioso! I was offered some butternut squash ravioli and eggplant Parmigiana. For research, I put the gift horses in my mouth, and both are to die for! BTW: Don’t mind the city’s construction—go right off Grand on Bridge Street for free parking. Once construction’s complete, Estrella’s adding an outdoor patio. Che bella! —Ariel Waterman

You otter check out their breakfast served with a whale of a cup of coffee! Their veggie frittata gets my seal of approval, and my pup of a grandson claps for the $5 breakfast special: two eggs, bacon or sausage, excellent potatoes, and toast or pancakes (his go-to). For lunch, go fish for tempura prawns or calamari, fish and chips, or creamy clam chowder. If you can inhale Mr. 35, then you’ve won two prizes: a happy tummy and bragging rights. And, oh yeah, a T-shirt. Three prizes! There really was an “Old Juan!” John Verdin opened his cantina 35 years ago, and the Verdin family continues to serve up great Mexican food, inspired by their patriarch’s principles of familia, comida, and servicio (family, food, and service). Fresh chips and terrific, chunky salsa (a family recipe) appeared on our table as if by magic, and my green chile verde was succulent and hearty, accompanied by creamy refries and nicely spiced rice. Nestled in downtown San Luis Obispo, the place is sleek and swanky, winner of last year’s city beautification award. If it’s the hip appearance that brings you in, it’s the food and service that makes you stay and will have you coming back time and again. Novo’s patio is ideal for impressing clients. In fact, Realtors typically bring their clients to lunch here because it’s a showcase for SLO. “Novo is a place people are proud of; it’s so integral to the community. We get a lot of younger people celebrating birthday parties who can’t afford to eat out regularly. It’s a place people want to go if someone else is paying because it’s too expensive for them normally.” —Kathy

When last night’s awesome rager becomes this morning’s killer hangover, Franks Famous Hot Dogs is always there to help ease the pain and erase the shame. With a menu boasting such tasteful remedies as breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, platters, biscuits and gravy, and breakfast burritos (which are now served until 2 p.m. to accommodate those late risers), Franks has the kind of therapeutic food and reasonable prices that make it the Best Hangover Food in SLO Town. “We’re killing it with the drunks,” exclaimed Frank’s manager Jimmy Graton. “It’s kind of like going to Mom’s house to get some comfort food.” Yes, like going to Mom’s house—minus the never-ending nagging about why your breath reeks of whiskey and worse. —Kai

Let’s do some word association. When I say locally caught, you say Giovanni’s? How about wild fish? The same. Fresh? Family owned? Delivery? Same, same, same. This beloved fish market offers the best of the ocean to people who pack up their crab legs, lobster tails, scallops, live prawns, and—yes!—fish of every stripe and scale to take home. Shoppers can also partake in the bounty right there, with a kitchen that offers clam chowder, lobster and fish tacos, halibut burritos, prawn quesadillas, grilled fish sandwiches, and more. The market will even send fresh seafood anywhere in the United States the next day, so you can make your Midwest relatives jealous you live so close to the salty source. —Ryan

Who gets credit for this one anyway? Are we honoring the friendly and efficient hostesses and staffers who find us the best seats, race our plates over to us, and never flinch when we start whining and demanding a bunch of stuff? Or are we recognizing the better judgment of the management team that actually hires them? Either way, Ciopinot takes the cake. However owner Leonard Cohen handles picking his crew, it can’t be easy—this is a college town where

Owners Henry and Julie Gonzalez have been taking it “from the ranch to the pan” for 19 years in a century-old butcher shop in the centennial Village of Arroyo Grande. They offer Hearst beef, Sterling beef and pork cut to order, Rocky chickens, plus succulent wild fish, scallops, lobster tails, and shrimp. “Our rib-eyes are to die for, and our free-range Rocky chickens are so moist and tender, having no shots or hormones,” Henry said proudly. He also makes more than 40 varieties of sausage (my English bulldog husband loves the bangers!) and carries venison and buffalo. “We’re like stepping back in time to how it used to be. We do customized orders for each individual,” he said. —Ariel

It sucks trying to write about your favorite bar in 100 words, but here goes: If attentive servers, stiff drinks, and that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from walking into a place where everybody knows your name makes for a good watering hole, then you’ll understand why readers voted the Sheep Best San Luis Obispo Bar. To say the staff is terrific is one hell of an understatement, and that’s why most of the same folks have worked the bar since I first stumbled in a few years back. Tucked inconspicuously around the corner from the hustle and bustle of Higuera Street, it’s a great place for people watching, catching up with your favorite bartender, or kicking back in the cool patio section. Dear Mary, I know we come from different worlds, you from tomatoes and SLO, me from human beings and Pismo, but I cannot deny this love affair. Is it because McCarthy’s starts tenderly serving you at 8 in the morning? Or is it all of those deliciously necessary ingredients and the delicate way the bartender shakes and stirs you into the frothy, hearty concoction that you are? You’re not as traditionally beautiful as, say, a Cosmo, but I love you just the same with lots of spice and lime juice. You do carry a bit of baggage in the way of olives, but I can look past that. There’s always the celery, which I enjoy very much, and of course, the vodka, the most perfect of boozes. Finally, Mary, you prevent a rank and predisposed hangover. I quaff you, and only you, at McCarthy’s, dear Mary. Your loyal drinker, Christy. —Christy

While Ireland has Guinness and Boston has Samuel Adams, San Luis Obispo County proudly boasts its own special regional beer: Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale. Led by brewmaster Matt Brynildson, the three-time World Beer Cup mid-sized brewery champion (2004, 2006, and 2010) has been serving up tasty pints of goodness for 15 years now and is making its way to liquor stores across the country. Despite the brewery’s rapid growth and expansion into other markets, Firestone Walker always makes the Central Coast its focal point. “With most of volume consumed within 100 miles of the brewery, it’s crucial to recognize ourselves as a regional brewery,” said Firestone marketing director Jamie Smith. —Kai

Vitamin D

Vitamin D Prevents Cancer

Sunlight is the best and only natural source of vitamin D. Unlike dietary or supplementary vitamin D, when you get your ‘D’ from sunshine your body takes what it needs, and de-metabolizes any extra. Too much ‘D’ from dietary supplements may cause the body to over-process calcium. On the other hand, sunlight-induced vitamin D doesn’t have that problem – it’s the way your body is intended to make it! Sunshinevitamin.org

SLO County native brings joy to countless Slohemians every morning. Maybe joy is a strong word, but whatever you call it, Eric brings it. Fueled by his passion for good java and the San Francisco Giants, his good-natured humor and quickness with the portafilter has helped fend off my persistent hangover on many a bleary-eyed morning. I asked him how he does it, and he just shrugged it off and said his terrific staff makes him look good.

Hundreds of studies now link vitamin D deficiency with significantly higher rates of many forms of cancer‚ as well as heart disease‚ osteoporosis‚ multiple sclerosis and many other conditions and diseases. Have your physician administer a calcidiol test (also know as a 25-hyrdoxyvitamin D test). More important than your daily intake of vitamin D are your actual vitamin D blood levels. Optimal vitamin D blood levels are 50 ng/mL (125 nmol/L) VitaminDsociety.org

B EST LOCAL ARTIST—VISUAL

| Jeff Claassen 785 M a r s h , sa n Lu i s O b i s p O

When Jeff Claassen puts on an art show, people line up outside his gallery to see the opening. Young people. In the rain. Who is this guy? He’s like the pied piper! Claassen opened his eponymous gallery in November 2004, after he tired of rejections from established galleries. Now he’s New Times readers’ favorite, for the second time running. “I was shocked,” Claassen said. This year, “it just happened without me doing anything.” The artist has always doodled and drawn, he says. Above all, he likes to make faces, usually dominated by huge eyes—sometimes vacant, other times cute and inquisitive, other times weary and sad, and often shrouded in luxurious lashes. He prefers to render them, he says, in “India ink, on any surface that it will stick to.” Asked why his work appeals to so many, the humble street artist balks. However, when pressed, he shrugs, “I think maybe it just stands out.” Ya think? —Anna Weltner

Save for some other time a mention of the 3D projector that allows audiences to see rocks flying at their faces. If you can, overlook the regular showings of classic and cult films. Now think on this: The Fremont opens its doors to causes, including a breast cancer-awareness fundraiser that drew costumed pirates and their friends for a viewing of The Princess Bride. San Luis Obispo’s weekly Farmers Market presents members of the community with a great opportunity to discover why we live in the “happiest place on Earth.” Cruise your bicycle downtown to Higuera Street, drop it off at the bike check in the care of the friendly hipsters, and start strolling in whatever direction your feet guide you. Stop by a local nonprofit’s booth for a chance to give back to your community or talk with a person staffing one of the various religious stands, and you just might find inner peace. Let the smell of tri-tip wafting through the air guide you to one of the many local merchants barbecuing furiously in the fading evening light, and grab yourself a hearty dinner. Not hungry? Grab some local organic produce for later. Want to hear live music? Check out the local bands playing at virtually every corner, or stick out your hand and someone will deliver you a flyer for an upcoming concert or local event. I love public art. It’s how I find my way around. “You know that café at Nipomo and Higuera?” people often ask me. “No,” I respond. “You know, near the bodacious bronze woman?” they press on. “Ah,” I brighten, “you must be referring to Garnet, by Kate Britton.” Fortunately, downtown’s practically crawling with such landmarks. Cross the bridge, and you’re greeted by Web of Life, by Sandra Kay Johnson. Jim Jacobson’s Sycamore and Budding Thistle, Fish Life, and Chumash Pictographs inhabit the creek. The Mission’s fountain boasts Qiqsmu’ (life), by Paul Zuma. On Monterey Street, the Government Center is adorned by Stylus, a steel sculpture by Jed Joyce and John T. Jones. It may be the cub wine shop in SLO, but it’s as respected as the oldest tiger in the den. Last January, the shop was purchased by Rick and Lisa Gomez, who always wanted to own a wine bar. They refreshed the place with Mediterranean colors, giving it an intimate ambiance. Now, regulars think of it as their version of Cheers! “Business is really picking up, and everyone is enjoying the new vibe here,” owner Rick explained. “We’re committed to excellence and want to offer the most friendly service around. And we want to thank everyone who voted for us, or who just stopped in to enjoy some great wine.” —Kathy

Musicians, DJs, radio hosts—what do these people have in common? They all work at our local Boo Boo Records and are dedicated to getting new music into the store and into the ears of the people dying to hear it. The shelves of Boo Boo’s are lined with the latest releases on vinyl, as well as CDs and DVDs—and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, just ask. If they don’t have it, they’ll place a special order just for you. Fanny Wrappers’ knowledgeable salespeople are all trained bra fitters and, according to Treves, make “the shopping experience less intimidating for even the most reserved person.” Or maybe it’s because the shop carries top brands Wacoal, Notori, and Hanky Panky, as well as beauty and lifestyle brands like Lelo, Earthly Pleasures, and Kama Sutra. “I think we were voted No. 1 because Fanny Wrappers has always had the belief not to take ourselves too seriously,” Treves said. —Anna

At the risk of explaining why I like Pokémon, let’s dive more into what rocks about GameStop. For one thing, the people there know what they’re talking about. It’s seriously nice to buy used games that work well for lower prices than brand new—though there is new stuff, too—and it’s nicer still to have good customer service from an employee who will chauffer you to that purchase. Healthy options and customer care make this the natural frontier for eating right. You’ll go ape for their array of seasonal, organic produce, and forage into their incredible deli, meat and fish department (free of nitrates, hormones, and antibiotics), sushi, and gelato. “We think of ourselves as a natural marketplace, with a variety of choices, and healthy, fresh quality,” explained Director of Marketing Ron Colone. “We care about our employees, customers, and community and try to inspire change and growth as part of our core values.” The store also carries gluten-, soy-, and peanut-free alternatives. “We own an organic farm in Buellton, and our commitment is to walk it like we talk it to benefit farmers, the community, and planet.” Colone’s favorite guilty pleasure is pizza, “but our pizzas are made with quality ingredients, so it’s not really an unhealthy choice!” —Ariel

Former American Dance instructors Leslie Baumberger, Stacey Estrada, and Rose Patti joined forces to form CORE Dance, with Zheila Pouraghabagher jumping on board in October. Inspired by the hit TV series So You Think You Can Dance, CORE exposes its dancers—and therefore, its growing audience—to as many choreographers and dance styles as is humanly possible. CORE, which stands for Creative Original Raw Energy, boasts more than 50 dancers, but frequently collaborates with Ballet Theatre SLO and the Civic Ballet. In the future, Baumberger believes, lots of other companies will work together this way. For CORE, it certainly has paid off. —Anna

Down the Aisle

144 W. B R A N C H ST., A R R OYO G R A N D E

Marriage is, as the story goes, one of the most exciting things in a young woman’s life. Everything is supposed to be perfect and beautiful. You can’t go wrong in Historic Arroyo Grande. Down the Aisle promises that the bride will feel special the moment she walks through the shop’s doors, but I think there’s more to it than that. The setting is gorgeous, and the very architecture is (hopefully) calming to someone suffering from emotional overload (or “wedding preparations,” as kids call them). I can’t say that “special” even begins to describe how brides feel when they do enter. Down the Aisle’s extensive selection of optimal choices ultimately lands in the decision-making hands of an understandably frazzled bride-to-be. Fortunately the staff knows how do deal with dress-hunters of all stripes. So congratulations to a Best Of winner and a lucky couple. Cheers! —Chris

Los Osos sewer

If all 267,000-or-so SLO County residents had to split the total cost of the Los Osos wastewater project, we’d each have to pony up about $708, which is almost enough money to buy three American Standard Champion Series toilets. Not to mention that you, me, and every other county taxpayer has already forked out a share of the $8 million spent from the county’s general fund just to jumpstart the decades-worn project design. If you factor in the county and Los Osos CSD meetings devoted to the effort, time devoted to public comments on it, staff costs, lobbying costs, and the litany of other sewer-related expenses, it’s no wonder this project has become a poster child for government waste. The Sierra Club 974 SA N TA R O SA , SA N LU I S O B I S P O

God, I love this area when it’s pretty, and these are the people we have to thank for that. The Santa Lucia chapter of the Sierra Club is made up of volunteers who help our mountains stay majestic and our rivers stay clean. More than just a group of kids who want a road named after them, the Sierra Club raises its glass to the health of our planet. If they can help pay for open land to ensure it never gets developed, they’ll try. If there’s a new method discovered for aiding in the fight against global warming, they’ll try. And that’s the point. They actually try. They’re not in it for the community service hours, and they don’t leave trash in the parking lot and say “the janitor will get it.” If we need any progress to be made, we need to try—even the odds are against us. If the effort

is futile, at least someone tried. And if you try, the effort isn’t futile, now is it? —Chris

Los Osos sewer

Calling the Los Osos sewer controversial is pretty much a nobrainer. For more than 30 years, the pariah of SLO County government has been tossed from agency to agency, official to official. It’s become a favorite joke among local politicos that the project will never be built. However, it seems Los Osos is as close as it’s ever been to laying pipe in the ground— well, not counting the pipe already laid from the last failed project. But with a $189 million price tag, decades of debt to be repaid, and many Los Osans worried they’ll have to abandon ship or go broke from monthly bills, the controversy train seems fully fueled to steam ahead. —Colin

B EST ANNOYING PUBLIC FIGURE

SA N LU I S O B I S P O M AYO R

San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx wasn’t too happy when she learned she’d won Best Annoying Public Figure. “Wow,” she deadpanned. “I can’t believe I beat out Sarah Palin.” Why Marx? She’s taken it on herself to streamline City Council meetings by making council members tap a button to electronically queue up to speak. She doesn’t hesitate to bring her fellow politicians in line, and though dedicated attendees hope she manages to shorten the meetings, sometimes it feels like she’s depriving her fellow politicians from bloviating. What’s bloviating, you ask? Watch any SLO meeting and you’ll still see a lot of it. —Robert

B EST USE OF TAXPAYER MONEY |education Education must really matter to our readers. They voted it Best Use of Taxpayer Money once again. Education in California has probably lost more funding than some countries spend in a year. Over the past three years, education in this state has lost $18 billion; with that much money you could buy more than 522.7 million one-year subscriptions to Highlights magazine. This year, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson declared a state of financial emergency in California schools, saying in a prepared statement, “The law won’t let me call out the National Guard.” San Luis Obispo County’s largest school districts have collectively lost more than 100 teachers and staff this year, and are facing more than $10.2 million in further budget cuts. Former state superintendent, our own homegrown Jack O’Connell, last year said, “Our public education system is in crisis.” And still it wins. —Colin

A lot of people like Katcho Achadjian. Even his opponents on the other side of the political divide think he’s OK. He’s come a long way: from gas station owner to SLO County supervisor to his present-day gig on the state Assembl, Achadjian is moving up in the world. And, if you take what he says below seriously, drop by his office in downtown SLO on Fridays. “I am extremely honored and humbled to receive this recognition from New Times readers,” he said. “As a county supervisor, and now as a state assemblyman, my No. 1 goal is to fairly represent the views of my constituents. My constituents should know that my door is always open and that I am always willing to listen to all points of view.” —Robert

Woods Humane Society takes on a burden most of us wouldn’t consider. It welcomes in the downtrodden, abused, and unwanted pets in our community, cleans them up, and finds them new homes. Woods relies almost entirely on volunteers and donations from the community to operate its facility off Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. The nonprofit offers low-cost spay and neuter services, and a trainer helps correct behavioral issues and make dogs more adoptable. To raise funds, Woods holds such events as the Wiggle Waggle Walk for Woods, which also promotes responsible pet ownership and raises awareness in the community. —Jack
